Off duty [in Aldbourne] the men spent time relaxing in camp or hoping for passes to London. One man who was especially adept at finagling passes was Joe Liebgott, a clever and highly talented soldier who doubled as the company’s barber. ‘You know, sir,’ Liebgott said as he trimmed Winters’ hair, ‘between all the drills and the men wanting haircuts, it really wears me down.’ ‘Joe, why is it this subject only comes up when you are halfway through my haircuts?’ Winters asked. ‘Ahh, Captain,’ Liebgott whined. ‘You make it sound like I’m deliberately maneuvering you. It’s just that when I have you in the chair is when I think of it.’ ‘Uh-huh,’ Winters said. ‘And if I want you to finish the job on me and make it look good, you need to be assured of a three-day pass.’ ‘It sure would help my mental well-being,’ Liebgott said. ‘Okay, Joe. If you don’t cut my ear off, you got your pass.’ Liebgott smiled. It worked every time.
