I just had a dream that the Jon Snow spinoff show was just Jon encountering a bunch of different creatures Beyond the Wall like Steve Irwin. 🤣

Here’s the thing. I don’t like the Targaryens and I already knows their story ends with (almost) all of them dead. But if HBO wants to keep milking their cash cow, I’m fine with HotD being made, because at least it’s a new story with new characters. But I simply cannot with this Jon Snow spinoff bullshit. Maybe I’m suffering from franchise exhaustion, but the mere idea of it makes me irrationally angry. Considering how they already desecrated Jon to the point that the character was barely recognisable in later seasons and gave him an ending that made zero sense, this spinoff is almost guaranteed to only spread salt in those wounds. And that is to say nothing of the possible inclusion of Sansa, who the GoT writers never demonstrated any understanding of or interest in and dear god did it show. HBO can fuck around with the Targaryens all they want. But now they might be messing with Jon and Sansa, two characters I actually care about and who were already done dirty? No. Nope. Hate it.

Everything we know about the Jon Snow Show
Facts:
~ News about a Jon Snow spinoff was first broken by James Hibbered of The Hollywood Reporter, then subsequently confirmed by Emilia Clarke, and finally by George RR Martin himself.
~ The working title for the show is Snow (though this could definitely change, ex: GRRM wanted the ill fated show about the Long Night to be called The Long Night but the HBO official title was Blood Moon).
~ The writing / producing team for Snow is a crew put together by Kit Harington and the idea for the series was created by Kit.
~ Kit’s writing / producing crew visited GRRM in Santa Fe and are working with him / his writing and consulting team to “hammer out the show.”
~ Snow is not yet greenlit by HBO (that they’ve announced, at least), but is in the “script” stage of development, which includes an approved outline and treatment, notes, and multiple script drafts (though whether for a pilot or a whole season is unknown).
~ Lastly, goes without saying, HBO will be the network behind Snow.
Reasonable Assumptions:
~ Friend of Kit Harington and co-executive producer of the limited series Gunpowder, Daniel West, will likely be involved with the show.
~ Tandem news, Snow will likely be a limited series (West’s page on his agent’s website was briefly updated with an item for an unnamed limited series with HBO but it has since been deleted) (and not to toot my own horn but I had already long predicted that it would be a limited series so, yay me).
~ Brienne of Tarth actor Gwendoline Christie could be involved, as she has said she would love to play the character again and gave a “maybe” when asked point blank if she’d be involved in the Jon Snow spinoff.
~ Lastly, could be something but could be nothing, but House of the Dragon co-showrunner, Miguel Sapochnik recently left the series after only being involved for a single season. With Sapochnik also being a friend of Kit Harington and Kit being an admirer of his work, it’s entirely possible he’s been poached by Kit for Snow.
Unhinged Dot Connecting:
(The tinfoil hat is screwed on tight for this section and the shipper goggles are ON so take all these predictions with a grain of salt). Keep reading line included cuz this gets LONG.
~ We know Kit personally told Emilia about the Jon Snow spinoff. They’ve talked about this show together. Granted, it could have just been in the casual context, “Hey, I’m thinking about pitching a Jon Snow spinoff to GRRM, what do you think?” But arguably, it also could have been a lot more. For all we know / have been told, this is something Kit and Emilia have come up with together. Based on their individual thoughts of the final season and their desires for their characters’ endgames, it makes sense that they would ruminate on the S8 ending together and then come to the logical conclusion most of us had in response to watching that dumpster fire: it’s bullshit and it should be re-done.
That Emilia was THE former cast member to officially confirm that the spinoff was real after the THR leak feels significant. Also, George’s Not-A-Blog was posted the same day that Emilia’s BBC interview came out (Gwen Christie’s Newsweek article also came out this same day, but was more framed from the perspective of it already being confirmed and just asking Gwen if she’d be involved, whereas Emilia’s was asking if it was true or not). All 3 confirmations of the show from people being previously involved in GOT coming out on the same day and exactly one week after the Hibbered article. I mean, I know I’ve got my tinfoil hat screwed on tight here but it really feels as if this was all... planned.
~ Though she initially demurred in the BBC interview and said she was “done” playing Daenerys, Emilia has since backtracked. At the DIFLondon event, she was asked about playing Dany again in a sequel and allegedly said it would be “difficult” because she’s dead and “We don’t know where her body is.” She allegedly dropped the old “could come back as a white walker” chestnut. And she said she wants Dany to be with Jon, for them to work through their issues in family therapy (lol), and said that Dany is ultimately a hopeful character.
So all her talk about Dany being dead, to me, is very reminiscent of Kits “I’m dead” routine following the GOT Season 5 finale. She absolutely knows that characters can come back from the dead in the ASOIAF universe which is probably why, after saying it’d be difficult to play her again with Dany being dead, she added “we don’t know where her body is” as an additional obstacle to her coming back to the character.
But, of course, as we’ve all theorized about a thousand times, at the end of GOT, it very much seemed as if they were hinting at Drogon flying toward Volantis, where there’s a temple of the lord of light with red priests who could bring Dany back.
Now, do I think D&D purposefully set up Drogon’s location to hint at Dany coming back for potential future spinoffs? Not really. I mean, it’s entirely possible they thought they could come back to the franchise a few years later but it’s also possible HBO asked them to leave that all ambiguous for the purpose of potential spinoffs, with or without their involvement (like Showtime did with the original Dexter series - the writers were forbidden from killing off Dexter).
~ According to Maisie Williams, Kit was allegedly told back in Season 3 that he was going to be the one to kill the Night King.
This is such an odd rumor considering the character of the Night King doesn’t exist in the books and didn’t even appear in the show series until Season 4 (though Maisie could have gotten the seasons wrong). But, so far as canonical ASOIAF, Kit being told his could have been genuine. D&D learned from George the final fates of all the major characters around the time Season 3 was airing. So if George had told them Jon was involved / helped with stopping the White Walkers, they could have offhandedly passed that information on to Kit.
With House of the Dragon now shining a beacon on the Prince That Was Promised prophecy that D&D completely abandoned in Season 8, this could become a central plot point for Snow, especially if they’re going to rehash the White Walker plot with the old, “but they weren’t really defeated” trope.
At the end of GOT, Arya is headed west of Westeros and has Aegon’s prophecy-inscribed dagger with her, which could definitely prompt a return of Maisie Williams to the character in the spin-off.
Now, this absolutely does not mean that Dany can’t also be TPTWP. And according to the prophecy from the books about waking dragons from stone and Maester Aemon realizing it could be someone male or female, it actually makes more sense for it to be Dany. Going back to HOTD, with the Dance of Dragons ending with Rhaenyra being killed by her usurping male relative, it feels reasonable that they’d be setting up a Targaryen woman to be the savior of Westeros, not a man.
At the very least, if Emilia is indeed coming back as a resurrected Daenerys, we can safely say this would be Dany’s redemption. There is NO WAY Emilia would agree to come back to the character if Kit’s grand spinoff idea was to turn her into the Night Queen or another kind of “big bad” for the show. If Dany comes back, she will be redeemed, she will be a hero, and she and Jon will be given another shot at love (true, they could die again in the end, but they’d likely die together as heroes).
~ Speaking on House of the Dragon again, this is a show that they are rushing. There’s such a huge time skip in the middle of the show that they had to cast multiple actors to play the same characters to show them when they were young vs when they got older. And this isn’t an issue of waiting for actors to grow up so they can do sex scenes à la Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams. The younger versions of the characters cast were adult actors too. And there is certainly enough material on the Dance of Dragons to last a series at least as long as Game of Thrones. However, HOTD is being planned as only a three or four season show.
Now, why on earth would HBO (and GRRM for that matter, as he was always in favor of having more seasons of GOT to flesh out the story more) only order a show for three or four seasons, when there is certainly enough material to run for at least as long as GOT did?
Well, if they are going to tie in the Jon Snow spinoff show with HOTD (and especially if the spinoff contains a Daenerys resurrection / redemption), it makes a whole lot of sense that they’d want to premiere Snow as HOTD is ending. Season 1 is already half way finished airing, which means it’s only got two or three to go. If Snow rides on the coattails of HOTD and follows directly after its run, we could get the spinoff on screen by as early as 2024.
(As far as production and writing timelines for House of the Dragon, this could logistically make sense. Though Fire and Blood, the book on which HOTD is based, came out in 2018, and the series was ordered by HBO around October 2019, writing for the series only began around January 2020. George stated that Snow has been development almost as long as the possible shows for Ten Thousand Ships, 9 Voyages, and The Hedge Knight. And though those three potential spinoffs weren’t announced / leaked until early 2021, they’d have to have been in development / talks much earlier than that before news of their development finally got out).
Other silly tidbits:
~ When a fan explained to Kit the finer points of fandom shipping and that they believed Jon and Daenerys were “The Song of Ice and Fire,” he called it “brilliant” and said he “totally agreed.”
If HOTD was in the writing stage then and Snow was in very early development, Kit could definitely have been agreeing because he knew he was already creating a limited series spinoff based on that exact idea and had insights from GRRM about the true ending to ASOIAF.
~ When Kit was asked whether or not he’d become a father in Season 8 (before the table read when he found out Jon and Dany’s ultimate fates in the show series) he certainly seemed fond of the idea. And, as has been relentlessly pointed out, the GOT 7x07 commentary with David Benioff, Dan Weiss, Kit Harington, and Lena Heady (not to mention the numerous references to “children” throughout Season 7) definitely seemed to hint that this would be the case for Season 8, and realistically could have been a planned plot scrapped by D&D in favor of Mad Queen Dany. But if it’s part of Dany and Jon’s book fates and is a plot favored by Kit, we could finally get a Targling at the end of Snow if Dany is indeed resurrected.
But what do you guys think? I’ve already predicted that Kit’s growing out the beard in preparation for beginning filming Snow, though it hasn’t been announced that the show is going to series yet. I doubt they would officially announce it before filming begins because it is such big news and HBO wouldn’t want paps trying to get photos of the set and spoil parts of the plot. Though if we get short-haired Emilia soon or blonde Emilia, I think we’ll be able to say with confidence that it’s happening.

As a Sanrion fan, I don't really know how to feel about this. On the one hand, I'm sorely disappointed that we won't get to see Sansa and Tyrion again. On the other hand, at least this means they can't make things worse for our beloved couple.

Jon Snow sequel has the potential to be awesome - or not
In some ways its not surprising at all that someone at HBO would have the idea of creating a spinoff series about Jon Snow. He and Daenerys Targaryen were the most popular characters on the original show, for the general audience. Many people were disappointed with Jon Snow's ending because he didn't become king of Westeros. His ending was open ended as well, with the audience left wondering whether his final scenes were supposed to mean that he was joining the Wildlings for good, or if he was still part of the Watch and just helping the Wildlings to relocate.
I think there is potential for the show to be good, but that depends on many variables, like who are the writers and the producers and whether other cast members from GOT would sign on again, like Sophie Turner and Kristopher Hivju, John Bradley, and Isaac Hempstead Wright. There could be many storylines revolving around Jon's relationship with Sansa and The North as the new political realities take hold in Westeros. Or perhaps the show will mostly be about the Wildlings recreating themselves after the destruction of the wall. Jon's Targaryen blood could surely be a factor as any children he might have would mean that the Targaryen bloodline would not become extinct.
On the other hand, the show has the potential to be horrible and reminiscent of the antics in Beyond the Wall, the episode from season 7, or some of the excesses of season 8. It seems surprising in a way that Kit Harington is signing on after the stresses he suffered in the past while portraying Jon. On the other hand, he strongly identified with the character and maybe is not ready to put him to rest after all (plus the $ is probably excellent).
I wonder if the planned plot lines have anything to do with GRRM at all, or are going to be wholly invented. Odd for him that Jon is still dead in the books but now is getting a post-books sequel on TV.

Whoops I meant to send this with the other ask but somehow it sent while I was typing and didn't even notice. Anyways now that the who Jon sequel news has calmed down, what are your thoughts on it? And theories? Things/ships you do or don't want to see? Will you be watching gonna wait for other people's reaction first?
To tell you the truth...I honestly don't give a fuck? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I was pretty disappointed by the last season of Game of Thrones, so it's pretty hard to get excited about any new GoT content from HBO tbh. I do appreciate that it was Kit's idea and he brought in his own writing team that GRRM seems to be happy with.
It turns out I do actually give some fucks, so here's a 'read more' cut.
I would like to see Jon actually working through and coming to terms with the fact that he's not Ned's son and that he's not a bastard. Both of those things are central to his identity and finding out neither of them are true would realistically fuck him up for a while. I would also like for him to deal with some guilt in relation to Da3nerys (why did he keep making excuses for her, why did it take so long for him to stop her?) I don't have enough faith in D&D as writers to believe they intended him to be anything but ✨blinded by love✨ but Jon coming to terms with being a male victim of abuse/coercion would be interesting. Maybe some flashbacks fleshing out that relationship and giving them some actual chemistry and then have Jon slowly realize that he is in way over his head and in a dangerous situation that he can't fight his way out of without endangering everyone he knows and loves.
I have read that Gwendoline Christie is open to reprising her role, so I would be happy to see Brienne of Tarth again. I want Tormund back too. I didn't actually ship Brienne and Tormund during the show's run, but I'd be interested to see what they do with that ship now that Jaime is dead. I'd love for Tormund to realize he was being creepy and set up Brienne and Tormund to be friends first. But I'm probably too far in the weeds since Brienne is part of the Kingsguard and unlikely to return North soon.
I kind of fucking hated Arya running off to be an explorer since her inability to shed her Stark identity and ties to the North was such a big part of her character, and I'd love for her to (gracefully) get over that and COME HOME. Nymeria too. FUCK IT. SPEND THE ENTIRE BUDGET ON DIREWOLF CGI, WE DESERVE IT. Also, if Arya somehow gets back with Gendry, that would be pretty neat. I like the idea of them actually getting to know each other again before immediately jumping into bed.
I would also, of course, love to see Jonsa be a thing, but I'm not sure how they would make it happen. It would have to be period drama Yearning™ with a capital Y. There needs to be long looks and a new Hand Flex to make gifs of alongside Mr. Darcy's hand flex and Kate and Anthony from Bridgerton reaching for each other.
As for stuff I don't want to see...I don't give a fuck about Tyrion Lannister or Bronn or really anyone south of the Neck except Brienne, and if I see them, I will roll my eyes so hard that they pop out of my sockets.
I think I'll watch it if I can make my sister watch it with me. If not, then I might just piece together the story through gifs on tumblr.

May be an unpopular opinion but does anyone else think that a Jon Snow spin-off series will be fucking ass… because I don’t know about the rest of you but when the books and the show spent too much time with Jon Snow and the wall I could feel my brain melting. The only saving grace of that plot line was the build up to the white walkers which ended up so disappointing to the point were I don’t actually care what happens in the final books if we ever get them. And Kit Harrington is a handsome guy but his performance was pretty flat beyond that
Personally I think if they’re to do a sequel they should skip 100+ years where everyone we know is dead and more war and conflict is breaking out in Westeros because let’s be real peace isn’t gonna last long and it will be cool to see some of the original characters offspring - like Sansa’s great grandson who’s the king of the north or Jon’s granddaughter who grew up beyond the wall coming to Westeros because… idk reasons
Or they could focus on Aegons conquest like we actually want
Genuinely curious about your opinions

Winter may be coming – but there's no forecast for Snow.
In November, Harington was a guest at London Comic Con Winter. According to one fan on Twitter -- jem met kit -- he talked a bit about the Jon Snow show. "Kit has said the snow show is on ice and he cant (sic) currently seeing it going anywhere and it’s not happening right now, but he’s open to it in the future but not right now," Jem wrote. "He says it was talked through but currently it’s not happening but maybe in the future," she added later. Now, it's true that this is an unconfirmed report; we don't have video from the event of Harington saying this, nor was it covered by a journalistic outlet on the scene. But Jem does have pictures of herself posing with Harington around the time of the con, so I see no reason we can't at least talk about it. Plus, I think the report has the ring of truth. I know a lot of fans are eager to see their favorite Game of Thrones characters onscreen again, but HBO has been very cautious about how often it visits the spinoff well. It even shot a pilot for a Game of Thrones prequel called Blood Moon that it ended up canceling because the decision-makers didn't think it was good enough. Game of Thrones was a big success and HBO wants to milk that, but they have high standards. They're not just going to make a spinoff because they can. [ ... ] So HBO wants to make sure that any Game of Thrones spinoff it puts out meets a high standard of quality, and it doesn't want to make too many lest it dilute the Game of Thrones brand like Marvel has done with its gaggle of superhero TV shows. In this context, it makes sense why HBO may want to stop with the two Game of Thrones spinoff shows it already has.
I still think the best sequel would be Arya's Voyages. 🙂

This was what I was looking for that no one else was posting yesterday. Now we have context. And it’s the exact context that I knew it would be, that I said in my post yesterday that it would be. Kit isn’t saying that the ending between Jon and Daenerys was the right ending period, he’s saying their ending for everything that happened in the show before that moment felt right. For what Dany did, of course it makes sense that Jon would have to kill her.
Is that an opinion that I agree with? Of course not. I still hate Jon for killing Dany even after she burned King’s Landing. It was unnecessary to me. But that’s also a pointless line of thinking because that means accepting what Dany did in the first place, which I don’t. I don’t think that was her character at all. It was D&D fanfiction and that’s the end of it for me.
But I’m glad I watched this.
Some other notable Kit one-liners from this panel:
“What [Benioff and Weiss] did was right because they wrote it.” Boom. Right fucking there. Kit just comes out and says it, as he always does. He is not biting the hand that feeds, he’s saying everything he needs to say for HBO. But he’s also telling the audience what he needs us to know about the whole situation.
“If you could ever do this, it would be interesting to go back and do an alternative.” Now that’s an interesting thought. Jon fighting the Night King again? It’s more likely than you think.
When asked about whether Jon really loved Dany and if he could have gotten over the incest thing he goes into the “dominant women” bit as he does in the second panel, though that question is totally different from this one. “Don't know why I went into that.” Probably because it was pre-written and he’d gotten certain answers to certain questions mixed up. Notably not answering the part of the question of whether Jon could get over the incest angle of their relationship, either because he just forgot or he did so on purpose.
Nearly all of these questions are the same as those from the second panel, there are only a few variations and there are more questions in the second panel. But it all sounds just a little bit rehearsed. Especially in the second panel, Kit uses some buzz phrases that seem like they’re straight from Reddit, so probably pre-written for him by someone else.
As for what it means for Snow, I feel like he’s doing all this because it hasn’t been greenlit yet. He wants to get his show made and so he’s doing anything he can to placate the people at HBO. Which is probably why his answers in the second panel, though nearly the same, also feel more generic and tailored. I’m sure he said some things in this first panel he wasn’t supposed to and so he made sure not to repeat them in the second.
But that’s just my interpretation. I only write this for my own sense of posterity. Either I will regret giving him the benefit of the doubt when Snow gets made or I won’t, but that’s not for present me to stew about.

You mentioned you miss Kit but I thought he is always busy. He played Henry V on stage and his new movie opens at TIFF. He has so many projects in the works, someone should take notes. (Jon Snow spin-off is a mistake though.)
Oh yeah that was more me moaning about not having kept up with him than anything else. I know he did Henry V and I was in London while that was happening but of course--the Donmar, a very famous actor, couldn't get tickets for love nor money.
So the Jon Snow spinoff is definitely happening then? Are we all serious guys? Are we okay? Is Kit okay? Did he hit his head?

“but the whole point of the dance was that everyone was unlikable 🥺🥺 why won’t they show the derogatory way Rhaenyra was portrayed in fire and blood on the big screen, why isn’t she fat with no redeeming qualities so i can hate her 🥺🥺”
because those cgi dragons are EXPENSIVE. this is a million dollar production that employs thousands of people. HBO is a company.
unfortunately, the corporate heads at HBO aren’t renaissance era aristocratic patrons, funding art for the sake of art. they are businesspeople, they are expecting the millions of dollars they put into the show to come back to them and then some. general audiences like protagonists they can root for. you can criticize them for how they did it but acting scandalized they did it in the first place is, dare i say, stupid?
and weep and wail all you want, but Daenerys Targaryen keeps the lights on and the bills paid at HBO headquarters and they know it. There’s a reason the Targaryen spinoff got greenlit instead of the Jon Snow one. There’s a reason house of the dragon opens with “172 years before daenerys targaryen” and not “172 years before Jon Snow aka Aegon Targaryen” “172 years before Stannis Baratheon” “172 years before Tyrion Lannister”
and the absolute lack of critical thinking towards book rhaenyra truly astounds me. if you were paying attention, maester Gyldan is a sexist FREAK. He talks about how “nubile” six year old girls are. I’m not saying book rhaenyra was a saint and it was a smear campaign, but come on. you’re convinced she had zero redeeming qualities and spent all day either eating or having sex. everyone talked big talk about how they understand how George is ✨criticizing the patriarchy✨ and then proceeded to swallow rhaenyra’s portrayal hook line and sinker with zero critical thinking involved.
oh no, did HBO try to turn an unlikable figure into a likable one general audiences can root for after the reception to their last “women be crazy” episode crashed and burned? i’m shocked. shocked, i tell you.
