The scene that made me start shipping Sanrion in the first place?: This one
Tumblr media
So for personal context: s3 aired in 2013 and I had just turned 18 around that time. I wasn't really that into got before but it became a comfort show. And I remember thinking that, for some reason, this scene out of all things I'd seen was the height of romantic.
Because Tyrion was in a position of power, because by law they were married. and out of all the things he could have done. He could have walked out, he could have just said 'not until you're older and less terrified' or simply pretended the problem wasn't there. Out of all the things Tyrion Lannister could have done He gave the power to Sansa.
He said 'not until 'you want' me to' essentially saying 'in this marriage if you don't ever want to have sex, we don't have to, forget whatever "I" want, because unless you want to do it first, I'm not taking that power away from you'
And when you're at the age of 18 and you see Peter Dinklage deliver that line like with all the seriousness of a man aware of what he is doing. Then wow. It leaves an impression.
I don't know any other scene on tv where the matter of sexual consent was treated as directly as in this scenario.
The scene being that two characters got married, they were supposed to have sex, he told her her consent came first and she said no to sex and he accepted her decision
Because in other shows scenes like these are usually followed by something that invalidates the consent previously denied. Either the consent is taken by force or the plot turns into some romantic bs where she's persuaded into falling into bed (in both cases her no is invalidated)
But to me at 18, it was the height of romantic that Tyrion Lannister, the least romantic ish hero in all the series. Didn't even try to talk teenage Sansa into changing her mind. She said no, and he was fine with taking the no. Sure he got drunk afterwards (with a wedding like that who wouldn't) but he never blamed or judged Sansa for her No.
Leaving aside the whole plot with Shae and the death of the Starks. The scene is still excellent as a stand alone example of what a man accepting the denial of consent looks like
And that's the day I began shipping Sansa and Tyrion. Because a part of me wished that these two characters would have separate plotlines and grow into their own and years down the line, when they were free to make their own choices again, after things were less messy. Finally free from being forced to do what they didn't want to do for duty or for fear. They would choose each other.
Not because there wasn't anyone else available, or because of some grand prophecy of destiny. But rather because Sansa would know that Tyrion would still love her and respect her even if she said No. Heck he wouldn't even try to change her mind if she said no. And Tyrion would know that Sansa would also be the same with him. She would respect him and care for him even if he said no too.
Okay this post got too long but yeah for those wondering why I started shipping Sanrion, it was the consent thing that made me feel super fuzzy and shippy about them 💘💘

Was trying to get a proper picture of Sansa and Tyrion from the ai art generator and it kept giving me pics like these so I got really annoyed
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But I do think it opens up an interesting venue of conversation about ableism in shipping. Think about it If Tyrion hadn't been born with dwarfism, if he was just a normal wastrel second son, who was forcefully married to Sansa for his father's political motives. More people would be shipping Sanrion. If Tyrion as a abled bodied male, had shown Sansa the protection and respect he did in fact show her in GOT. People would be clamoring for them to make their marriage work. And it's sad that a lot of times, it really does seem like the reason people don't think Tyrion deserves a chance at love is exactly the same reason Tywin uses.
The guy deserves more respect than all the men in position of power that he's surounded by and he's treated like a glorified sidekick by most of the fandom. And I can't help but think that it's at least 50% influenced by ableism. But were not ready for that conversation yet
I agree with you 100%! I think it's very telling that even an AI image generator couldn't produce a picture of Tyrion as he really is. It says a lot about our society as a whole. It's both disheartening and disappointing.
If Tyrion didn't have dwarfism, I have no doubt that hordes of people would ship him with Sansa. He's one of the most beloved characters on the show, yet try to ship him with anyone--anyone at all--and people get all weird and squirmy about it. It is ableism at work, and it's a shame. As far as many in the fandom are concerned, Tyrion is allowed to be the cunning politician or the witty comic relief, but never the romantic lead.

one thing i've never seen anyone talk about in regards to sanrion is tyrions line "and so my watch begins" after sansa's rejection on their wedding night, because to me that had implied that he would remain faithful to her regardless of if their marriage was ever consumated
YES! It is so underrated, and not spoken about enough. Tyrion promises, regaurdless or not if they ever consumate their marriage he plans to honor his vows. And we see that he does (in the show)! And there are times I almost wish somehow, in a not weird or uncomfortable way it could have come up and Sansa find out about that. How Tyrion even respected both her wishes and the vows he made her when they were seperated for all that time.
Idk...maybe somehow in a verse where Sansa and Dany are less at one anothers throats. Maybe they even get along. Dany mentions she doesn't understand Tyrions reputation in Westeros at ALL because she has never even seen him really persue woman. Sansa nearly chokes, having assumed any fidelity he had to her would be out the window when she left the Red Wedding. It brings up, interesting questions that her curious mind can't let go of no matter what she does to try and not focus on it.
Did I add a WIP to my stupidly long list? *sigh*. Yes, yes I did.

I know nothing abt Sansa and Tyron but I'd LOVE to hear abt their dynamic and what they're from
Soooo Sansa and Tyrion!
Tumblr media
Now bear in mind that everything I say here is relevant specifically to Game of Thrones, not A Song of Ice And Fire. I did start reading the book series but never finished. Also I don't remember everything very clearly, so this is just the gist of it.
This is Sansa Stark: (One of the rare young female characters who deserves the title of babygirl, but I digress)
Tumblr media
Her life was going swimmingly. Her father ruled the north, she was young, naive and pretty. She had a big, loving family, and she was about to be betrothed to the the son of her dad's bff: a rich, handsome prince.
Unfortunately, the prince turned out to be a psychopath born out of incest. A lot of horrible shit happened. The king died and his 14 year-old son took the throne, her dad was executed for treason, her was family split asunder, and she was held captive as a hostage.
Now little King Joffrey belonged to a long line of rich, scheming shitheads known as the Lannisters. One of the slightly less shit of these was Tyrion:
Tumblr media
Now don't get me wrong. This guy is no angel. He has problems, and they started the day he was born. His father and his elder sister (the late king's wife) absolutely hated him, both because of his dwarfism and because his mother died birthing him. Tyrion grew up bitter and basically wasted his life away with wine and prostitutes. The couple of times he did actually fall in love ended in absolute disaster.
Now Tyrion's father basically wanted to play politics and solidify his claim on the north, as well as humliate his son and the poor terrified girl they were holding hostage, so he forced them to marry.
Sansa herself was still a teenager and deeply unhappy with her new husband, but Tyrion, despite his love of sex, refused to touch her or hurt her in any way. He was one of the few people in Sansa's own private hell who truly respected her, and had she not been so young and afraid, in time she may even have been able to open her heart to him in return. Nevertheless, for the short time they were together, they did develop quite a sweet friendship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Soon after their marriage, Sansa is rescused from her prison, and they go their separate ways. Sansa is dragged through various more fresh hells (including a MUCH less respectful marriage to an extremely unpleasant man), but only grows stronger and wiser through her torment. Meanwhile Tyrion gives his abusive family the middle finger, murders his father and goes on the run and ends up pledging alliegance to the queen of dragons instead.
A few years later, after a lot more shit has gone down, Sansa and Tyrion meet again, this time on the same side. Against all odds they both survived, and she sheer pride on Tyrion's face when he sees what Sansa has become just... argh! And Sansa never forgot the kindness of her first husband.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So when all is said and done and peace is finally restored, Sansa is Queen of the North, and Tyrion is Hand to the King (Sansa's younger brother). And I am among the group of people who just look at these two and are overwhelmed with feelings about the complicated mess of a relationship they have shared. I shift back and forth on whether I see them renewing their marriage out of a growth of genuine romantic love, or just simply bonding as besties who have been through hell and back. But either way - Sansa and Tyrion are in my mind the greatest power couple in all of Westeros.
Tumblr media
I actually wrote a short post-canon reconciliation fic for them back in 2017 after GOT finished airing. But as a disclaimer I haven't read it for years so it might be shit lmao.

On today’s Episode of 'The Real Sansa and Tyrion', we get a look at the aftermath of the Red Wedding, aka, the Hollywood red tie event in which Dreamboat CEO Robb Stark, eloped with soap opera star Roslyn Frey (now referred to as wife #3) and resigned from his position in Winterfell Industries.
With Chairman Catelyn Stark and househusband Ned joining Robb and Roslyn in their honeymoon Cruise. Plus the rest of her family MIA. All the responsibility for the family business has been dumped on Sansa’s front porch. And our favourite celebrity Trophy Wife is not happy! Tune in for our next episode as the woes and annoyances of being the #QueenofTheNorth and being the #QueenofTheNorthHusband continue in Winterfell
An: how do you like the trs&t version of the red wedding debacle?
