Very unfortunate news, one of our foxes seems to have sadly contracted mange.
If you are unaware, mange is a skin disease caused by mites burrowing into the skin and laying eggs, and the life cycle repeating. It causes hair loss (which can be seen on the tail, face, and legs), extreme scabbing to the skin (which you can see on the face). In later stages it can cause complete hair loss, abnormal behavior such as lethargy and being active during times they normally wouldn't.
Mange can technically be treated, though it is difficult. The main way is through oral or injectable anti-parasitic drugs. The problem is catching the animal before the disease gets too far along.
It's also important to note:
humans and pets can contract certain types of mange, though it is easily treated with anti-parasitics since you have the subject of the disease with you.
Mange is very contagious, usually through direct contact, but also from something like an animal wandering into the affected animals den. The mites can live off the original host for up to a week, letting them find a new host.
If you suspect an animal has mange call your local wildlife center, or the equivalent to where you live. It's very important to stop the spread before it gets out of hand and affects other species.

whumpee finding an injured bunny outside one day when outside w caretaker. seeing that the bunny was attacked by some bigger animal, whumpee starts crying about how someone could ever hurt something so sweet and innocent. after begging caretaker to take the bunny home they house it back to health and continue to take care of it <3
content: injured animal, argument born of tension, past trauma, recovery
Whumpee held the small creature in their arms, tears falling onto its bloodied fur. The poor rabbit had been attacked, no doubt — one of its hind legs was almost completely torn off. "We have to save it," Whumpee sobbed. "Caretaker, we have to— we have to save it! We have to!"
"I understand," Caretaker said softly. "I understand. Come on, stand up. We have to bring it to a vet. We can't save it out here."
"Why would anything attack a little thing like this—"
"Whumpee, come on. We're losing time." Caretaker held out their arms. "Give it here, I'll hold it while you get yourself together."
"No! No, let me hold it! I don't wanna move it around so much, it's in pain!"
"Whumpee, come on."
Whumpee had to admit they were being ridiculous. The sight of an innocent little angel now sticky with blood had ignited something deep within them, dragged out memories they'd long buried and laid them out on the surface of their consciousness.
Eventually, they handed the animal to Caretaker. The rest of the day was a blur. They came to while washing the rabbit's blood off their hands later in the sink at home.
Celery, they'd named her; after her new favourite food.

One's Hometown, One's New Home
Chapter Three: Curious Encounter
Masterpost | First | Previous | Next | Ao3
@tss-anxceit-week
Summary: Janus’ hometown is a usually quiet place where everyone knows everyone. So when someone new moves in, they’re usually the hottest topic of local gossip. The newcomer then comes by the library Janus works at, he can’t help but chat with him a little. Doesn’t hurt that he’s good looking as well.
Content Warnings: Injured Animal, Wolf, Unsafe interactions with wild life
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Janus loved taking walks in the woods by himself. He enjoyed the quiet, of course he did, he was a librarian, but it was a different sort of quiet than at his work. The wind dancing through the leaves, birds singing, a brook babbling nearby. It contrasted heavily with the quiet humming of the air conditioning in the library as well as the whispers of visitors and the turning of pages. Still, Janus could appreciate both types of silence.
Thankfully for him, this Sunday was once again without a single cloud in the sky without being overwhelmingly hot. He let his mind wander as his feet carried him along a familiar path through the trees, towards a small lake he likes to visit every once in a while.
His thoughts drifted to Virgil. He hadn’t seen him since he stormed out of Dan’s shop. It wasn’t that strange he supposed. None of the books he borrowed after their first meeting were due, so there wasn’t an incentive for him to come by the library and while Janus did know where he lived, he hadn’t acquired that information through Virgil himself, so he didn’t want to drop by unannounced, especially after how their last meeting ended.
So, Janus left it up to fate to determine when they’ll cross paths again.
Or the dues of the library he supposed.
Of course, if Virgil wanted to avoid him, Janus wouldn’t stop him. He had every right to cut off contact if he made him uncomfortable, but for some reason, Janus didn’t think that was the crux of the problem.
Virgil’s eyes in that moment… Well, they hadn’t seemed like they were looking at him with discomfort, if he thought back to it.
No, he looked like he was afraid.
But afraid of what? Of Janus?
No, he didn’t think so. He had flirted with Virgil from the first moment they met, and he had responded positively, even if Janus was the most direct at the end of their last conversation.
Maybe Virgil really had just remembered something and needed to leave so suddenly because of it, just like he had said?
Again, Janus didn’t think that was the whole truth.
But he couldn’t figure out why he thought that.
Just intuition, he supposed.
Suddenly, a sound startled him out of his thoughts. He stopped and listened.
There! A huffing of some sort.
Janus tried to spy through the trees to see what was making the noise, but he couldn’t see anything.
A growl followed by a whine.
An injured animal? If so, it would be a big one to make such sounds.
The logical side of Janus’ brain told him to stay away, to leave, go back home and not get involved, but… There was a part of him that was convinced he should check it out.
It was the part that won.
Carefully, Janus left the path. He made sure to check his compass that he always carried with him when he entered the woods, just in case. Yes, he’s been running around these woods since he was a child, but that was exactly why he knew not to underestimate the dangers they could hold as well.
He moved slowly. Calculating every step, looking out for traps the local hunters and or rangers might have placed. Trying to stay quiet as much as possible.
The sounds got louder.
It was definitely an animal. And as Janus peered around a tree, he saw it.
A wolf.
It was alone, staring at the ground and switching between whines and growls. Janus followed its line of sight and spotted the problem: the wolf left back leg was stuck in a bear trap. There weren’t a lot of bears around these parts – or wolves for that matter – but the few that wandered around could be a potential danger, so the local rangers placed some traps strategically to ward them off.
Honestly, Janus didn’t think that the trap was as sharp as it could be. He hardly saw any blood clinging to the wolf’s fur but he’s sure the force of it engaging could have caused an injury.
He was unsure of what to do.
Unconsciously he shifted a bit, enough to make noise and get the wolf’s attention. It snapped its head in Janus’ direction and growls loudly.
With raised hands, Janus steps out from behind the tree. Why exactly he didn’t know himself, it just felt like the right thing to do.
“Hey there. I’m not here to hurt you.” He spoke calmly while taking careful steps towards the trapped wolf. It stared at him intently, watching every move he made and growled once he got too close. Janus stopped at the warning and looked over to the caught leg.
His first impression turned out to be true. The teeth of the trap had been dulled and didn’t pierce the animal’s flesh as much though there was definitely blood. He was sure however, that the animal could survive the injury if it was set free.
“You’re in a bad situation, aren’t you?” he continued talking soothingly, staying still for now. “I can help you if you let me.”
The wolf’s leg twitched. It looked between the trap and Janus, as if contemplating his words.
Which was definitely not what was actually happening, a wolf couldn’t understand him.
Still, despite being trapped, it hadn’t actually shown a lot of aggression towards Janus. Yes, it growled at him when he got to close but that was it. It wasn’t baring its teeth or trying to get away from him.
Janus watched it for a moment longer and to his surprise, the wolf laid down on the ground, stretching its caught leg away from its head. He took it as permission and slowly started moving again. Walking in a half circle to stay away from its head and in turn sharp teeth, Janus approached the trap.
He had learned to engage and open these traps as a child, as had everyone who grew up around these parts as a safety precaution. He knelt down by the wolf’s side, keeping an eye on its head the entire time and got to work.
It didn’t take long before he pulled the metal teeth apart and as soon as he did, the animal pulled away. It limped a few steps away before stopping and looking back at Janus, who had remained still by the trap.
They stared at each other for a long moment before the wolf left, dragging its foot behind it.
Janus waited until he was sure it was gone before standing up.
In all honesty, he should be dead. Approaching an injured, wild animal while it was trapped was a death wish.
And yet he wasn’t even so much as injured.
Peculiar indeed.
Came home to find an injured crow in the back yard. Poor thing had a broken wing. Pretty young bird, according to the wildlife vet I left it with. It ended up hopping under the one part of the fence that's open and my neighbors wouldn't answer their door (they were home), so I ended up hopping their fence and having their dog help me corral the bird. I feel sorry for having to traumatize it to collect the stupid thing, but the vet should be able to help it recover and they said it appears to be in good shape minus the wing, and they said they'll release it back into the area I'm in if it recovers so it can go back to its family.
my mom found the most sweet, perfect mourning dove dying on the side of the road so ofc she picked it up, brought it home, and dumped it in my lap to watch over while it died. hour of holding its head up and making sure it doesn't sporadically fly later, still alive and looking more alert. actually started pecking at my hand so maybe this angel baby will make it?? not getting my hopes up tho :( it's losing a lot of feathers, can't keep its head up, and was kind of convulsing at first. i don't think it's bird flu but im not 100% sure which is..................concerning
A digital painting done in de-saturated green and bright red. It has a hazy feeling to it. As the viewer gazes into the woods, a doe peers at them. Between the viewer and the woods in a double headed roe fawn, one head stares right at the viewer. The other head has a blood-slicked muzzle, and many teeth. Its eyes are blank. The fawn lays on the ground, its foreleg chewed to the bone and bleeding, contaminating the grass.
Day 17: Lost In The Woods. This one actually came to me in a dream. I couldn't rest until I'd gotten it down onto canvas.
As I was walking out of the woods today, back to the car I witnessed a northern flicker fly straight into a window and collapse. Picked it up and let it regain its bearings inside the warmth of my car. I was about to call the rehab center when it decided it wanted out and started to scramble around. I let it out and it flew off strong :]
She gets her own special post and picture
I was sitting on the edge of a canal today, when I saw her walk up and start to flap her wing and pick at it ... after a few minutes, it was clear that her right wing (as you can see) was broken / damaged.
She flapped it, but it would not twist back under as we normally would see... and so she picked at it a bunch of times, tried to move it, shift it, etc.
I watched her for ten minutes ... there were tons of people sitting on the grass, relaxing and such ...
I wondered if I should / could do anything for her ... I took a short video and also a couple of photos of her...
As I was looking to see if Amsterdam had any kind of animal services, some ignorant person walked through the area, without even paying attention to where they were going and scared her off into the water ... and she swam away fast and furious ...
I hope things work out well for her...😢
[Older pics] I encountered a rather severely injured butterfly (red-spotted purple butterfly?), little thing clearly wasn't having a great time, but I let it perch on my hummingbird feeder for a while to get a meal! Unsure what happened to it after that, however-
Probably a fruitless endeavor but I found a fatherless baby bird and am trying to save it. Any advice? The rescue center is already closed for the day
I got it to accept water and I'm waiting on my order of baby bird formula from Petco, but I have no idea what kind of bird and it has a broken leg
One of the most shocking things I learn about leporids is how really ressistent can to be.
Like, yes, predators can tear them easily, and some can die by a big hit. But their aren't exactly so weak.
Once i see a video of a levert being teared alive by some mongoosses and even when they removed part of their skin the leveret still alive and keep fighting. Was so hard but also wonderful to see.
Also, we have these rabbits and Jackrabbits who we're accidentaly shooted by arrows and you can see them don't giving a shit about that
Today I had the will to beat god by not smothering a baby rabbit with my love
Tumblr media
TW: Implied reference to animal injury (didn’t occur) and shock
My dad accidentally hit a baby rabbit though it received no notable injury. We waited a bit and got kitten formula just incase, but checked for nests and found a mama bunny nearby. Able to release it a bit sooner than we were expected and I’m happy it’s likely gonna be okay.
I just wanted to be hehe, because god I was so anxious the whole time and trying so hard not to hover, which I probably did but gave him space
