#Inej in a lehenga
taitropa · 6 months
Note
❛ the hardest part is who we are. ❜
The lehenga is the color of bubbling champagne adorned with gems that catch even the smallest light and cast fractals onto the nearest surface. Right now that would be the ceiling of the hotel room and the sparkling orbs thrown across the walls twist and glitter when Inej turns even only a little. The fabric is soft when she runs her hands across the full skirt, a far cry from the cheap imitation material she once wore to entice men who wanted her for only her skin, but she doesn’t feel any safer. Her choli bares more flesh than she is used to. The soft expanse of her midriff is on display from the wings of her ribcage all the way to the band at her hips and she fights not to curl into herself.
Kaz stands beside her with her dupatta in his hands. It perfectly matches the lehenga and she wonders how he managed to steal the whole set but then she probably shouldn’t wonder. This is Kaz after all. Inej fixes her gaze past the dupatta and on the skin of his bare fingers. If she looks at his face, she’s almost positive that she will tumble into the well of emotions that sits simmering within her. She agreed to this job without any fuss and she doesn’t even know why anymore.
Tumblr media
“We’re playing a part,” she reminds him because she is also reminding herself. Mostly she is reminding herself. And it’s his plan anyway just like it always is. Inej runs her hands more firmly back down the front of her skirt to reassure herself that her knives are tucked beneath...and also to avoid taking the dupatta yet. It feels even more like taking that plunge than meeting his penetrating gaze and she doesn’t think she can take that leap. For all her courage in past times of fear, she is embarrassed now to be so anxious. “This isn’t who I am.”
🔪 UNREAL UNEARTH.

the afterlife
chapter eight excerpt:
She's wearing her traditional clothing, tonight — not the dark purple silks of the Menagerie, but a simple chiffon lehenga in a decidedly gentler palette. Her skirts and blouse are a lavender hue, paired with a dawn pink dupatta pinned to the crown of her head. Colors of innocence, of a girlhood that had been ripped away from her. A direct contrast to, well... this. Kaz Brekker’s mouth on hers, pressing her up against an empty caravan wagon, making her moan. A marked contrast, indeed.
Summary: Kaz and Inej take back what was taken from them with a vengeance. OR: Love and sex in the time after. The journey to healing, it turns out, is well worth its rewards.
PWP Kanej. A series of sexy, mostly unrelated one shots.

KANEJ MODERN HEAD CANON (LITTLE THINGS EDITION):
-Kaz has a hidden hobby of buying extremely challenging jigsaw puzzles. For their second anniversary, Inej buys him a black mahogany dining table, with a secret. The center wood of the table lifts out to reveal a second layer for incomplete puzzle storage.
-Jesper also knows this secret, because he and Kaz have gotten drunk and attempted puzzles together. (Kaz looks forward to “puzzle night” with his best friend. He’ll never admit it.)
-Inej wore a beautiful lehenga for their wedding, made by her mother and grandmother, and afterwards she was always opening her closet to look at it with fondness. Kaz noticed and when they finally bought a townhome, he had the contractor build out a cabinet in their closet with glass doors, where her lehenga now hangs on display, and beside it, the tie he wore hangs on a hook, too. Inej smiles every morning and night when she sees it.
Bonus: Many years in the future, Kaz gives that tie to their son to wear for his own marriage.

Kaz and Inej desi headcanons:
Kaz making chai for Inej every morning and they have it with Parle-G
Inej putting gajra in her hair💐 and Kaz always buying it from street vendors because he knows how much she loves them (his instinct would be to steal, but he would picture the treasure of his heart scowling at that and just buy them)
Them going to melas and enjoying the rides , later they would have some softy
Inej swears in Hindi under her breath and Kaz learns that. Next time Jesper screws up Kaz is just cursing at him in Hindi- everyone is confused as to what he is saying but Inej looks at him with pure adoration and a bit of shock🤌🏻
Rainy days in Ketterdam would involve lot of chai and pakodas.
Inej gifts Kaz a black kurta, and Kaz just absolutely being able to pull that off.
Them having an intimate and small desi wedding where Inej wears a simple lehenga and Kaz wears a Kurta with the juti
Jesper decorating Kaz's cane with the flowers from Inej's gajras💐💕 and Kaz acting like he hates it but on the inside he is absolutely melting and freaking out 'like why didn't I think of that before?!'

Diwali x the Crows
The Rangoli
Inej and Nina make the rangoli together at the Van-Eck mansion.
It is a crow surrounded by something that represents each member.
For Kaz, it's the crow cane.
For Inej, it's two knives.
For Jesper, it's his revolvers, or as he likes to adress them, his babies.
For Nina, it's a heart.
For Wylan, it's a bomb.
For Matthias, Nina convinces Inej on making his wolf, Tryss, to honor his memory, knowing the love he had for him. But doesn't tell her the reason why they're making a wolf, a little secret that stays just between the two of them.
Kaz doesn't admit it but finds it beautiful.
Jesper keeps on complaining as to why he wasn't invited to help as well.
Wylan fanboys all over it.
The Clothing
Inej is wearing a dark blue lehenga, the colour so dark, it matches the night sky.
The golden embroidery on the lehenga makes the illusion of her wearing the scenery of Ketterdam at night even more believable. She is also wearing a blue bindi.
Kaz denies the kurta Inej gives him to wear at first, but Inej forces him to wear it and when he does, he likes the feel of it.
He wears a black kurta with a black dhoti, but draws the line at no-hat and changing his shoes.
He won't admit it, but he likes having wiggle room for his legs.
Jesper gladly wears a dark green kurta with black slacks.
He keeps on bragging about how dashing he looks, checking himself out in the mirror every 5 minutes and flirting with himself.
Wylan is wearing a beige kurta with light brown slacks and likes it.
He asks Inej if he could keep it and where he could find more and she gladly tells him.
Nina is wearing a bright red saree with dark red embroidery.
Much like Jesper, she tends to flirt with herself every 5-10 minutes as well.
For Matthias, Nina likes to imagine him in a light blue kurta, right by her side.
He feels content and at peace to see them all happy as well from the beyond.
The Pooja/Arti
Inej, being the religious one, makes them all be a part of the Arti.
Jesper keeps losing his patience and taps his foot on the floor, being bored standing at one place with his hands in a praying position.
Wylan likes the Arti and decides mid-Arti that he's going to learn how to play it on the flute.
Inej is swaying side-to-side to the music, eyes closed, her mind getting lost in the prayer, her hands clapping along the music.
She is singing it as well, out of pitch but it doesn't matter to her one bit. She is in her religious, traditional mode.
Kaz thinks it unnecessary to do the Arti but does it anyway for Inej.
He cannot help but discreetly admire her unnatural beauty.
He also likes the music, but he only keeps his hands in praying position. He doesn't take much part in it.
Nina is fascinated by the traditions by now and is also swaying to the music.
She teases Kaz when a hint of a smile reaches his mouth and he glares at her.
She turns her attention back to the Arti after Inej scold them both for being childish and not paying attention.
The Parshad and Sweets
Nina loves the sweets and parshad as much as she does Waffles and everybody is shocked to hear her declare that statement.
Kaz doesn't make it look like he's one for sweet foods but is internally enjoying them to the fullest.
He is grateful that the bitter taste of black coffee, that he does not like one bit but has to drink to keep up his image and to stay awake, is gone and the sweet taste of the sweets and parshad is replacing it, being that he has a secret sweet tooth.
Inej eats some sweets and parshad as well, proud that her traditions are liked by them all.
She notices Kaz also liking the sweets and chuckles at him for being so secretive about it. She has to hold in a laugh when she catches him stealing the sweets.
Jesper is in love with the sweets and the parshad. He wants them to be his breakfast, lunch and dinner. He thanks Inej for introducing him to them.
The sweet taste reminds him of his mother kind, generous and sweet nature and that is why he loves them even more.
Wylan doesn't like sweet things as much but tends to take a liking towards the sweets.
Again, he asks Inej where he can buy them and when he gets the answer, he writes it down in his to-do list to go buy them.
The Firecrackers
Wylan is by far the most excited about this tradition and after eating the parshad and the sweets, he runs out to blow some bombs and make some explosions.
Jesper joins him with the same amount of excitement and his jaw drops when he learns that there's gun-firecrackers as well.
Nina is having fun along with Jesper and Wylan, occasionally sending worried glances over to Wylan because he keeps on experimenting each and every cracker.
She waves her hand at the smoke it produces and coughs once or twice but continues to enjoy.
Inej is simply enjoying seeing the others enjoy and is standing at the side, lighting diyas and placing them at the corner of the houses.
She finds Kaz sitting idly, twisting a phool jhaddi in his hand with his usual scowl displayed on his face and decides to go sit by him.
Kaz site idly on a bench, watching the others play with the crackers, occasionally twisting a phool jhaddi in his hand, trying to solve the puzzle of what the purpose of it is.
He finds Inej lighting up the diyas and he can't help but notice how the fire reflects perfectly on her skin and eyes.
It makes her skin glow and her eyes look like pools of honey. Inej comes and sits by him. She helps him with the phool jhaddi.
Bonus
Inej asks Kaz if he needs help with the phool jhaddi and he denies it, but Inej helps him anyway, knowing that his stubborn self would never admit he does.
She reached for the arm that held the phool jhaddi and paused an inch away from it hesitantly, knowing he didn't like being touched or such a close proximity.
Kaz meets her eyes and slowly moved his arm into her palm such that it looks like she is holding it.
Inej nods at the gesture and moves his hand forward towards a diya.
The phool jhaddi's tip lights up and it looks like fire crackers are going off on the stick.
Kaz mutters "incredible" under his breath but Inej notices.
She tells him to move his arm in whatever way he wants to make patterns with the phool jhaddi, and when he does, he looks genuinely impressed.

something about the way white people will look at anything desi and say that it gives off inej vibes doesn’t sit right with me. no not every single lehenga or shalwar kameez will be inej’s aesthetic, so stop acting like just because it’s desi it’s “inej vibes.”

Some Kanej Headcanons I have
(These all feature Inej as South Asian in our world)
- Kaz going with Inej to a mandir and standing behind her as she prays (even though hes very atheist and very cynical, he knows how much religion means to Inej and anything thats important to Inej is worth his time)
- Kaz and Inej sharing a warm steaming cup of chai on the streets of Ketterdam (after a long day of running operations in the Barrel)
- Inej thinks to herself that the hot earth coloured streams of chai resembles Kaz’s ‘strong tea’ eyes
- Kaz being absolutely mesmerised by Inej in a Mastani style lehenga for a special night at the Crow Club
- Jesper swears he sees Kaz’s eyes glazed over but drops it quickly when Kaz shoots a glare sharper than one of Inej's daggers
- Inej carefully painting a henna crow on Kaz's bicep next to his tattoos
- Kaz thinks that hes never been more at peace in his life when its just him and Inej, the leafy smell of the henna and her quick nimble hands moving over his arm
- Inej telling Kaz about how when people got married back home, they would hide their lovers initials in the henna
- Kaz would maybe never admit out loud that at that moment he could wished he could see the letters K R adorning Inej's smooth dark hands

people trying to make inej hindu for south asian rep is so funny to me like she’s south asian and fantasy!catholic, can you not be both? are we not allowed to exist? must one be hindu to be desi? indian* christians have rich and unique cultures unlike anything else even in other former colonies, why do you need to write about inej having a hindu wedding with ‘lehengas and kurtas’ like you’re literally erasing her culture and religion to insert yours/your image of south asians
*specifically indian bc i don’t know much about christians from other countries

Halloween; the one night you get to be someone else.
Since it's Halloween and I had prepared a Kanej fic about it days ago (but forgotten about it until an hour ago and then wrote in lightning speed) so here you go!! Happy Halloween <333
It was the time of the year when all of Kerch dressed up as whoever they wanted, pretended to be whoever they wanted. All of the world, really. It was the thirty-first day of the tenth month; Halloween. A holiday loved and enjoyed by all.
Who wouldn't when one was given the choice to be someone they admired for a day?
This year, Nina had pleaded Kaz to let them have a Halloween party. At first, he'd declined, but then Jesper joined her side and as did Inej, so he couldn't say no. And, though he would never admit it, he secretly wanted to throw a party as well; only among the Crows, of course.
Tonight was the night of the party. Inej wasn't sure it could be considered one though, since it was like their usual get together. Inej would come from the seas and Nina would come from Fjerda, along with her love Hanne -- no one could deny she had a thing for Fjerdans -- Kaz, Jesper and Wylan would be waiting for them at Fifth Harbour, Jesper and Wylan being all mushy and Kaz visibly regretting his existence.
days ago, Kaz had sent Inej a letter when she was at sea, freeing yet another group of innocents kidnapped by slavers.
"Dearest Inej,
Months ago, Nina had practically begged me for Halloween party and you had joined her pleading, due to which, I had no choice but to approve.
Now I am stuck in this puzzle of picking out what to wear to this supposed "party", my wardrobe consists only of hats, white and black shirts, black suits and ties. I need your help.
yours only,
Kaz."
What a dramatic man, Inej thought as she wrote a letter back.
"Dearest Kaz,
do not fret, meri jaan, I shall come to your rescue soon enough. With a surprise <3
yours treasure,
Inej."
Now she was standing in Kaz's office, holding a dark-blue lehenga and waistcoat and a dark-purple dupatta, the colours similar to the outfit Inej wore when in Ketterdam, and some knives and daggers. She herself was dressed in a black kurta with white embroidery on the cuffs and black pants, black shoes with thick heels this time, and a white dupatta hanging off her right shoulder and tied to the left side of her waist. Her outfit's colours were the same as any of Kaz's. Her hands were covered in black leather gloves similar to his and held a crow cane, also similar to his, but not the same obviously.
"Seriously?" he asked, understanding what Inej had meant by "surprise." His brows rose in what looked like disapproval, but was really amusement--Inej could tell by the way his eyes were lit with the same and how the ghost of a smile haunted the very lips that never stopped scowling.
"I know it's cheesy, but it's fun. Halloween is the one day we get to be someone else, be truly free and not have a tough exterior that is needed for survival. The one day we get to actually live, Kaz." Inej said, tilting her to slightly to the left. Kaz could see how much this meant to her and had already considered the thought in his mind countless times when Inje said her next words. "I'd like to be someone special to me, close to my heart. You, Kaz. You."
You, Kaz. You. It reminded him of the first time he'd let himself have thoughts of Inej that were of more than the friendship they'd achieved but something more. Something they'd achieved now.
Inej had shrugged nonchalantly. Shrugged as though the last two sentences didn't have Kaz's heart racing faster than Jesper could shoot at the target. Faster than Nina could some up with a sarcastic one-liner. Faster than Wylan could work his magic and make a bomb. Faster than Inej could blend into the shadows and disappear. Faster than he could steal a wallet. Faster than Matthias used to deem him a "demjin."
Those two sentences let his heart have a control over his words instead of his mind. And then. faster than the speed of light, he answered, Only for you, 'Nej. The smile that lit up Inej's face was as beautiful as the feeling one would get when rain would gently patter against the windows.
Or when kruge and Kaz's hands came in contact.
No.
No, the beauty of her smile could not be matched by anything but her and her soul, for she held the truest beauties of this world.
And if only four words from his mouth could bring that smile on her face and enhance her beauty even further, hen he would not refrain from saying those words again and again, and a million times again, even in the slightest.
And so, the two went to the get together, dressed in the traditional wear of where Inej came from, both representing the other's daily outfits, and announced their engagement to the Crows, which hadn;t seemed to be much of a surprise to them. Kaz had kept his gloves on and his crow-cane in hand, apologized to Inej for not being able to let the two go--she'd said she understood and didn't want him to feel uncomfortable, that there was no need for apologies--and though he'd gotten teased several times, it was all worth it.
He'd do it over and over again if it meant seeing that wonderful smile on Inej's face, getting kohl applied to his lower lids and learning more about Inej as she told him where she kept her knives and daggers and what the reason was behind the placement. If it meant seeing her happy, he'd do every ridiculous thing one could ever think of.
And who would've thought, it didn't feel so ridiculous by the end of it all. Kaz loved every moment, just as much as he did Inej and always would.

India being the best Dark Academia vibes out there:
we all are fans of Dark Academia, it is just too beautiful to ignore. But have you seen Dark Academia from my heritage? No? Well, it has been going on for centuries, and here are some pictures of our beautiful India embracing the Dark Academia aesthetic and bringing a new essence to it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I honestly feel ashamed I completely cut off my heritage and decided to embrace my American side instead of the one that runs through my veins. I am so sorry Gods, but I have learned from my mistakes and I AM learning, again, everything about the ancenstors whose blood runs through my veins, and I am proud to call myself an Indian, because, yes, we have flaws, MANY flaws, but we are still a developing country, and the new generation is, in fact, bringing a change in our country. And to any Indian, be it you have even just a little ounce of our heritage, do not be ashamed. Embrace it, because desi is beautiful, not just from the outside, but also from the inside. To any Indian reading this, reblog and spread the hashtag around. #Desi is Beautiful . And if you too suffer with Indian Racism (yes, it is very much a thing), know that I am here for you and so is everyone else. We are tough blooded, tough minded, stubborn but open to all other religions and countries, and it is time that it is known, that our country is not dirt and we don't live on farms or whatever you are said. Let it be known that we are just as beautiful as every other nationality, embrace this heritage, because it is an honor to be an Indian.
We have bollywood, we have samosas, we have awesome food, we have a whole another style of dance and music, and being Desi is one of the best things in the world.
[I have to do this . . . I really really want to see Inej in a lehenga. Be it art or the show, I want to see Inej in a lehenga or a saari with Indian style makeup done with some jhumkaas dangling from her earlobes and a large nose ring (as an honor to Devi Parvati), and a maang tikka]
