blood on your lies
summary: four times Y/N got injured and the one time kaz did
Tumblr media
"How many fingers?"
"I didn't hit my eyes."
"How many, Y/N?"
Y/N sighed. She squinted slightly. "Four?"
Kaz narrowed his eyes. "Three."
Y/N pursed her lips but didn't move. Her vision kept swimming in and out of focus. Sometimes Kaz and his concern disguised as displeasure was clear and then a moment later, he was just a black blob.
"I'm -"
"If the next word out your mouth is 'fine', I will deduct your wages for this job and hit you with my cane," Kaz warned, raising his eyebrows an inch.
Y/N wanted to argue. She hated appearing weak in front of Kaz. He was the one person she constantly strived to impress and being injured, again, whilst on a job with him was not what she wanted.
She tried to stand up, putting her hands against the wall behind her, intent on using it to push her up.
"No."
A gloved hand pushed down on her shoulder, forcing her to sit back down on the cobble stones. Y/N relented, her head already swimming. She closed her eyes, swallowing back the bile and trying to breath through the nausea building in her throat.
"You can't go to sleep."
Y/N sighed. She opened her eyes, squinting slightly at the light glowing just behind Kaz.
Kaz's eyes narrowed a fraction and he readjusted his weight, moving to block the light with his body.
"I can't sit on the cobbles all night, Kaz," Y/N muttered, bringing a hand to her head and shielding her eyes.
"Jesper will be along soon," Kaz replied, glancing down at his shoes, inspecting them one at a time. "Then when we get back, you're going to rest -"
" - but Kaz -"
" - and not go on any jobs for a few days," Kaz finished, ignoring her. He raised his gaze from his shoes, focusing on her. "You are allowed to be injured. It doesn't make you any less of a Crow."
Y/N, surprised by Kaz's sudden honesty, nodded, silent. Her eyes began to burn and she harshly wiped them, breathing out shakily.
"Ah, Jesper!" Kaz said, turning to face up the street. "Y/N has a concussion."
Tumblr media
It was early afternoon which meant the Crow Club was almost silent. Kaz was sat downstairs on the main floor, his papers and books strewn across a booth table. He didn't need to write down the numbers, but he did, just in case anything happened.
It was only because Kaz was sat downstairs, and not in his office, that he heard the almighty bang, followed by a thud, that came from the basement.
He paused, pen hovering over the parchment. There was a groan of pain and whoever was downstairs muttered, "fucking cupboard".
"Y/N?" Kaz called, setting his pen down. "Did you get into a fight with a cupboard?"
Y/N emerged at the top of the stairs leading to the basement. "I walked into a cupboard," she corrected, her voice muffled as she pressed her hand to her her nostrils. Her fingers came away, tinged with red, and she swore.
"Sit down before you bleed on my floor," Kaz said, easing himself out of his seat. "Tilt your head forward, not backwards."
Y/N followed his advice, sitting down in a chair and tilting her head forward. She pinched her nose, just above her nostrils, and held her hand under her nose, catching the blood that dripped down.
A white handkerchief was thrusted into her vision. Y/N blindly took it, pressing it to her nose.
"Don't forget to breathe," Kaz said, his voice coming from somewhere in front of her.
Y/N raised her eyes and she could just see Kaz's shoes, standing in front of her. "I cannot believe I walked into a cupboard."
"You didn't see it coming?"
Y/N lifted her head, looking at Kaz. "Did you just make a joke?"
Kaz's shoulders moved in what looked like a shrug. "I'm actually hilarious, do you not know that, Y/N?"
Y/N huffed out a laugh, lowering her head one again. "My deepest apologies, sir."
Kaz's lips curled up into a smile.
Tumblr media
Kaz woke with a start, his mind racing. A quick look around told him that his was no longer inside the building they'd entered. Instead he were outside, lying on the street.
As Kaz sat up, he became aware of how damp the back of his jacket had become, the sensation sending shivers throughout his body as memories came flooding back.
The wet jacket clinging to his back as he stumbled ashore. How it dragged him down, taunting him to let go and sink back under. Jordie.
Jordie suddenly morphed into Y/N and Kaz sat up, looking around the street for any sign of her. He put a hand on the ground, bracing himself to stand up, when he felt a hand brush his. Or he brushed the hand, Kaz wasn't sure.
The contact sent him back to the cobbles but, as Kaz turned his head, he realised it was just Y/N.
She looked serenely peaceful, lying there on the ground, her arms outstretched slightly. Kaz watched her for a moment, waiting to see the comforting sight of her chest rising and falling. It took a moment for his eyes to focus but when they did, he could see her breathing.
Some part of him relaxed.
Kaz pushed himself up onto his knees and crawled to Y/N's side. Swallowing back the panic and the urge to run away, he leant over her, one hand braced on the cobbles on the other side of Y/N, whilst the over reached up.
His hand hovered over her face for a moment. It shook. Kaz breathed in deeply. He put his hand against her cheek, his thumb moving up and down for just a second.
Kaz bought his hand back and moved it down to her shoulder, shaking her as hard as he dared. "Y/N. Y/N, come on, wake up."
Y/N's head slowly moved to the side as Kaz shook her, the orange light from the street lamp above casting shadows across her face. Kaz shook her again, hard this time. He was feeling water rising around him.
"Y/N!" He yelled and, before he could even think, he slapped her.
Y/N inhaled sharply and groaned, sitting up as quickly as she could, hands blindly reaching out to grip whoever had slapped her. Kaz let her grip his hand, let her realise it was him, and then pushed her back.
"What the fuck, Brekker!" Y/N exclaimed, falling back onto her elbows. "What was that for!"
"We have no time to sleep," Kaz said, wincing slightly as he awkwardly clambered to his feet. He was trying not to show his earlier panic and opting for despair and irritation seemed best.
Y/N groaned again, lying back on the floor, closing her eyes. "I have no idea what happened."
"We triggered something in that room," Kaz replied, looking around for his cane. "Knocked us both out. Then we were dragged and dumped out here."
"How long for?"
"Half an hour," Kaz said, still looking. "Ish."
"Ish? Kaz Brekker just said ish, I must be dreaming," Y/N muttered.
Kaz picked his cane up off the floor - it'd been next to his foot the entire time - and turned back to Y/N. Silently, he held out a gloved hand to her.
Y/N, still disorientated and confused, reached up and grabbed his hand, letting him pull her to her feet, without even realising what had just happened.
"What now?"
"We break back in," Kaz said, already making his way down the street. "Come on!"
Tumblr media
The boats in the harbour bobbed about as a wave rolled in and sloshed up against the stone walls. They were mid mission - at the most important stage.
And Y/N couldn't breathe.
She'd been pushed down a staircase earlier on in the day, when the mission had just begun. Whilst Inej had taught her how to fall, it hadn't saved her ribs from hitting the edge of the stone steps.
Once the initial pain had faded, Y/N had managed to keep going. She rejoined the group, got assigned a new task by Kaz, and was on her way to do it when she'd breathed in just a little too much.
The pain had flared up until she couldn't stand. Y/N had perched herself on the harbour wall and had sat there since, trying to get control of her pain.
"I don't recall sending you here."
Y/N didn't even have the energy to acknowledge Kaz. She lifted her head, noted him standing in front of her, and dropped it again.
Pain was coursing through her body and Y/N could feel the tears burning her eyes. Tears of frustration and of pain.
"You okay?"
Y/N forced herself to straighten up, to look at Kaz. She breathed in, felt something twinge, and her shoulders shook as she felt the tears spill over.
"Try and breathe through it," Kaz said quietly, his cane hitting the floor once as he moved closer, leaning against the harbour wall beside Y/N. "I get its hard, but try."
Y/N tried to, forcing herself to breathe beyond the pain. Her nails dug into the harbour wall, the stones digging into her palm.
"When I first broke my leg, the pain nearly consumed me," Kaz said, his words almost lost to the wind. "It's hard, when it gets bad, to think beyond it."
"I." Y/N paused. "I tried to cope." She squeezed her eyes shut. "But it got too bad... and then I couldn't breathe."
Kaz's blazer sleeve brushed against her arm. "Nina is near by."
"No, she's busy."
Kaz dug his hand into his pocket, pulling out a small metal tin. He flipped the lid open and picked two white circular tablets out. "Here."
Y/N held her hand out and Kaz dropped them into her hand. "What's this?"
"Drugs," Kaz replied, smirking. "The good kind."
Y/N tried her best not to laugh, but her smile grew. "Thanks."
She put them in her mouth, grimacing slightly at the awful taste in her mouth as they began to dissolve. Kaz held out a flask and Y/N took it, swallowing the tablets with what she'd expected to be alcohol but was actually water.
"When it gets bad and I have to keep going," Kaz said quietly, taking the flask back, "I take those. It doesn't get rid of the pain but it helps."
Y/N turned her head, her eyes settling on his. "Thank you."
Kaz just nodded.
Tumblr media
Blood was spilling out onto her hands as she pressed the bandage to Kaz's shoulder, trying to staunch the blood. Kaz was sat on the stone tomb, his head lolling to the side, hitting Y/N's arm every so often.
"You still with me?" Y/N asked, pushing her hands harder against his shoulder, the blood dripping down her arms.
"Ahuh," Kaz muttered, his eyes still shut.
Y/N knew he was battling with himself and his mind and didn't take his grumpiness and silence personally.
Her hands were trembling as she pulled the bandage away from his shoulder for a moment, checking to see if the blood had stopped or not.
"How did you get shot?" Y/N asked softly, pressing the bandage back to his shoulder.
Kaz stilled. Y/N squeezed his shoulder, the blood still running, and he breathed in sharply, coming back.
"He was aiming for you," Kaz said quietly, his voice hoarse. "At your... head."
Y/N froze. She took her hands from Kaz's shoulder, happy that the bleeding had stopped. The cloth dropped to the tomb. Y/N stepped back, standing in front of Kaz, her knees brushing his.
"Is that why you pushed me?"
Kaz nodded stiffly. "Didn't expect to get shot, however."
"Don't think anyone does."
"Unless they see the gun pointed at them," Kaz quipped.
Y/N smiled. Her leg brushed against Kaz's and she was surprised when he didn't flinch. He raised his head, gazing up at her. Y/N, for once, didn't fight the urge. She reached out and gently combed her bloody fingers through his hair. Kaz leant forward, resting his head against her stomach.
"I can stop," Y/N said softly.
Kaz nodded against her. "I know."
She let her fingers run down to his neck, never straying further than where his collar sat.
"We're okay, Kaz," Y/N whispered, leaning her head down to rest on top of his. "We're okay."

"That's my wife."
pairing: kaz brekker x wife!reader
genre: fluff
el's thoughts: requested by @jahayla-parker i realized i had this written ages ago and never posted it so here you go hahaha
~*~
“Just a cup of water please.” Y/N sat at the bar in the Crow Club, observing all the people playing at the tables.
Jesper sitting with Wylan by his side, Nina and Matthias sat farther down at the bar talking with Inej. Her eyes scanned over the laughing faces until they met a familiar pair of dark brown eyes. She smirked into her glass as she saw Rotty come up to Kaz with a small piece of paper.
“What’s a pretty girl like you doing all by yourself?”
She wrinkled her nose at the strong scent of alcohol as she turned around to face a young man around her age. She tried her best to smile politely, “I’m just waiting for some friends.”
She wasn’t lying. Kaz told her to wait until one of the other crows were ready to walk back to the Slat.
“Well then, mind if I keep you company?”
Y/N racked her mind trying to think of some way to turn him down without making a scene. Footsteps and the clicking of a cane were heard behind her.
“I mind.” Kaz’s raspy voice spoke over her shoulder.
The young man stood up taller, “So what? You’re saying this girl is your girlfriend?”
By now, Jesper, Wylan, Nina, Matthias and Inej had slowly made their way over, standing behind Y/N. Kaz stepped forward and placed both hands on his cane, leaning ever-so-slightly towards the man.
“No. What I’m saying is that this girl is my wife.”
A small gasp was heard from both Nina and Inej. Y/N turned and looked at them shyly, “Surprise…?”
She turned back around to look at Kaz and the young man, only to see him making a beeline to the door. She looked up at Kaz as he stood right beside her, “Well, cat’s out of the bag now.”
He shrugged, “It’s about time they knew anyway.”
Jesper made silent hand gestures between the couple, “So you two have been married this whole time?!”
Y/N chuckled, “Not the whole time… Just about a year.”
He stood there, eyes flickering between the two as the rest of the crows tried to wrap their minds around the news.
“When were you gonna tell us?!”

• Kaz Brekker Being Jealous •
Tumblr media
It should come as no surprise that jealousy with Kaz is a common occurrence. The green eyed monster making it's presence known almost daily.
Even towards others who Kaz knows aren't a threat to your relationship.
It rears it's ugly head whenever he sees others touching you in ways that he cannot.
Such as when Nina kisses your cheeks in greeting or when she takes you on a day of shopping, her being able to see or touch your form as she forces you to try on fancy gowns.
And when Jesper casually drapes an arm around your shoulders or picks you up into a bone crushing hug, twirling you all around.
The envy is prominent then, when Kaz witnesses his own Crows giving you simple intimacies without a second thought. Ones he should effortlessly be giving you and more.
But with Nina and Jesper, Dirtyhands is never resentful towards them for long and can move on as soon as he sees you smile at him.
Or when you show how comfortable you are around him, like after a long day when he sees you relax on the settee in his office or when you carelessly throw your over-clothes around your quarters with him there.
When he sees you so content being in his company he can almost feel slightly grateful to the sharpshooter and heartrender for being there for you in ways he is unable (almost).
Now, let's say you're recieving unwanted attention from a mere Pigeon at the Crow Club? Or even another member of the Dregs? That's where the problem starts.
If anyone, anyone, lays a hand on you without your consent then that's where, as Mathias is apt to call him, the real Demjin shows himself.
See Kaz is very good at threatening people. And when it comes to protecting you, when it comes to the little green eyed monster inside his head, he even gets great satisfaction out of torture if necessary.
For instance, say some seedy bloke is staring at you too much for too long, well Kaz might just have to gouge out his eyes so he can never look again.
A hand finds it's way to grope your hips, ass or chest? Kaz deems it appropriate that the offender should just have said hand cut off.
There is a reason why you feel safe walking even the shadiest of alleys or going into the worst of pleasure houses on your own after all.
It being a well known fear told throughout the streets in hushed tones of just who is protecting you and what happens to any that disturb you.
Kaz would sooner lose the Crow Club itself than admit whenever he's jealous but you can always tell.
After all, despite his sharp expression, his eyes are a dead giveaway to how he's really feeling.
And though you cannot touch him as freely as most couples can with each other, you have your own ways of subtly reassuring him that he has nothing to worry about.
You are his and he is yours and no hug from a friend or grope from a creep will ever change that.
Your relationship isn't lacking, despite his fears. Despite the lack of physical intimacy.
Because in your heart you know how much the bastard of the barrel loves you.

'homesick, but not for home' - kaz brekker
Based on this request: "y/n finally gets to visit their home country after years away in ketterdam with the crows. a sweet little slice of life with kaz finally getting to be kaz rietveld"
masterlist
merry christmas everyone! my present to you is kaz
Tumblr media
Receiving a summons from Kaz Brekker usually means one of two things:  either you are about to be murdered, or he is going to ask you to do something before he murders you. Usually, that task involves the distribution of funds from your ledgers to his. However, as one of the bare few who has the privilege of making it to his inner circle, you would wager that there’s a third possible outcome from hearing from him:  he still wants you to do something, but you’ll be killing someone else.
Nonetheless, judging by the expression of the courier who tells you that Kaz is expecting you in his office, even being spared an imminent death doesn’t mean that this meeting will go pleasantly. Dirtyhands has a reputation around here, one just as dark and choking as those black gloves he so loves to wear. No one here knows Kaz as anything more than a shadow of a man, a killer, a convict. To learn that he wishes to speak to you is akin to hearing that Death itself is knocking on your door.
You, however, just smile and turn your feet towards the stairs leading to Kaz’s office instead. The Slat, home of the Dregs, is a rickety ramshackle of a building. Kaz has been doing his part to fix it up as he can, but the floorboards are still masterfully creaky and the oil lamps flicker ominously from their resting places beside each looming door. The stairwell is worst of all, a towering, beckoning talon that delivers you to your fate at the very top.
Sometimes, you swear Kaz put his office on the top floor just because it would give his victims more time to contemplate their quickly approaching demise when they had to climb all the way up. Other days, you just assume that he was sick of the noise and wanted to find a place where nobody would bother him unless absolutely necessary. Knowing Kaz, both rationales are probably sound.
You knock once on the door to his office and, upon hearing your name called to come in, twist the doorknob and let yourself inside. Gathered in a loose semicircle on the few available pieces of furniture as well as leaning against the wall are Inej, Jesper, Wylan, Matthias, and Nina. Kaz sits, as usual, ramrod straight in a chair behind his desk, and gestures for you to take the final open seat.
“Looks like everyone’s here,” you note. “Should I be worried about missing anything?”
“Not in the slightest,” Jesper chirps. “Only that Kaz has been saving that chair for you this whole time. He keeps glaring at us whenever we so much as look towards it.”
Jesper looks as if he’d like to gossip about this a little more, but Wylan digs a sharp elbow into his side, causing the other boy to complain heartily.
You just grin, sliding into your seat. “Good. I deserve luxury. I was never made to sit on the ground.”
Kaz coughs pointedly to disguise what you’re sure is a smile. “Now that we’re all in attendance, we can get started. I’ve heard news of a prospective business deal happening off the coast of the Southern Colonies. Expensive materials are being exchanged. Jewelry, artwork, the like. It’s all being conducted by Kerch merchers, but they took everything offshore to avoid the chance of getting caught. If we swoop in the night before and take all their bargaining tools, we’ll be richer and they’ll have to cave to our demands.”
“Of course, our demands,” Nina says, nodding. “What are we demanding, again?”
Inej smiles. “For them to stop breathing down our backs, for one thing. Also, they keep trying to cut into business. They needed this deal for an alliance between some of the wealthier merchers, but if each party thinks the other stole their riches before the swap, they’ll be so busy with infighting that they won’t bother us for some time.”
Kaz inclines his head gravely. “Precisely.”
Inej taps her fingers silently against her leg. “My question is when we’re going to stage the attack. We can attempt to hijack the ships before they leave the harbor, but I have no doubt that they’ll be crawling with stadwatch.”
“That’s why we’ll be sailing along with them,” Kaz clarifies. “The heist won’t happen until we’re on the shores of the Southern Colonies. That way, they’ll have let down their guard.”
Immediately, everyone reacts. Leaving the Barrel is an invitation for everything to go wrong. If rival gangs like the Dime Lions or the Razorgulls find out that Kaz’s inner circle isn’t in town, they’ll hasten to loot the place or kill your foot soldiers before anyone gets back.
“We have to leave the country?” Inej asks doubtfully. “That’s a tremendous risk.”
Kaz’s expression doesn’t shift a second, but you can still sense him tensing somehow, all too aware of the extra burden on his staff to maintain decorum and avoid attracting threats from his many enemies. “Think of it as a vacation. You’ll be able to get out of the city and go somewhere nice. Maybe even get some seaside air.”
Jesper snorts. “Kaz, your idea of a vacation is locking the door of your office and not running your numbers for five minutes. I didn’t think seaside air existed in your vocabulary except as a potential source of weakness.”
Kaz frowns. “Of course seaside air exists in my vocabulary. How else would I know to say it?”
Jesper rolls his eyes and looks as if he’d like to counter that with an equally terrible argument, but you cut him off. “I’d like to go,” you say suddenly.
All eyes turn to you. “Why?” Wylan asks.
A faint smile plays upon your lips. It’s easier to look at the ground than face all of their inquisitive stares, so you do just that. “I’m from the Southern Colonies. Used to be, at least. I’d always planned on going back at some point, but never got the chance until now.”
Truth be told, you were assuming that you would never get that chance. Your parents moved your whole family down to Ketterdam when you were about ten years old, drawn by the call of a quick profit. They were able to eke out a few tentative years, but the city swallowed them like it does everyone else. It’s just you now, you and the Crows and the dream that at one point, you might be able to revisit the place you once called home.
Even connecting ‘home’ and the Southern Colonies in the same sentence seems like something out of a dream. You’ve lived in Kerch for so long now that you can hardly imagine being anywhere else. The Crows are your family, the Barrel your home. It’s a strange life, certainly, but it’s yours.
Kaz’s face closes down. “I’ll go with you. Inej, you and the rest will maintain the Crow Club and its affiliates until we return. I don’t want to risk all of us on one endeavor.”
Matthias arches a brow. “You are willing to brave the risk of splitting up, though?”
Kaz turns a bemused expression his way. “Are you worried about me, drüskelle? And here I thought we’d never see eye to eye.”
Matthias snorts. “Don’t go that far, demjin.”
“I won’t if you won’t,” Kaz muses. “The plan is set, then. We’ll have three weeks to plan, and then Y/N and I will set off.”
He allows the rest of the Crows to leave, but gestures for you to stay. You pull your chair closer to his desk, sensing that the discussion will shift into more details of the mission at hand.
Once the last of your friends have gone, Kaz turns his gaze to you. His eyes seem to stare straight through your skull, and you get the strange feeling that he could read every thought created inside your mind if he just bothered to listen a little closer.
“You said you were born in the Southern Colonies. I need to be certain that there will be no distractions for a job like this. Can you swear to me that you’ll be focused?” He asks you.
“It won’t be an issue,” you assure him. “I’ll see the countryside and then move on. Honest.”
“Well, I should hope you won’t be completely honest,” Kaz murmurs, the corners of his lips pricking up into a slight shade of a smile. “We are still robbing people, of course.”
“Of course,” you laugh. His eyes jerk up when you do, his gaze hungry for the sight of it.
And– see, this is where you start to get into trouble. You are a criminal, a member of a gang. Every day is a fight. You know that survival is the thing that matters most in the Barrel, survival and how much money you can make off of delaying your last breath. You need to have single-minded focus totally centered around how you are going to make it through each day, but instead, your brain has started drifting to unreasonable topics like the precise shade of Kaz’s eyes or all the techniques he uses to hide his smiles.
It won’t serve you well, this feeling like a slow burn in your chest. Kaz would be the very first to tell you that weakness will only get you killed. People are a weakness. Is Kaz, though? Sometimes, in vague moments in between the times when reality comes firmly back to ground you, you can almost imagine that he might feel the same way. Would he really entertain this idea if he didn’t feel something for you? Would he leave the Barrel to go all the way to the Southern Colonies with you if he could easily send Jesper or someone else?
In the end, all you can ever do is push the thoughts from your mind. The scheming and planning period has got to be your least favorite part of a heist, but unfortunately, it’s also the segment that takes the longest. Every detail has to be perfect or all involved will be caught in the act.
Eventually, though, you find yourself shipping out on a fine sea morning, headed towards the country that hasn’t been yours since you were a child. You and Kaz are pretending to be business partners, which is true enough. His cabin is next to yours. You’re fairly sure he already knows the identity of every other traveler on the ship, just in case.
Standing on the deck and watching Ketterdam retreat into a nameless speck on the dark, vast ocean, you can’t help but wonder what the Southern Colonies will bring your way. Your heart is surprisingly light in your chest at the thought of it. You have dim recollections of the rolling hills and drifting tides, although even these memories have grown hazy with time. You can’t wait to see it again.
By contrast, Kaz, standing by your side, seems far less thrilled about the whole idea. His black gloves are clenched tightly around the railing, his grip hardening whenever the ship tilts too much. You glance around to make sure no other travelers are within earshot, then ask him with a questioning glance, “Why would you make this trip if you don’t like the ocean?”
Kaz shoots you a wary look. “I’m perfectly fine with it.”
You scoff. “Nonsense. You look as if you’d like nothing more than to drain the entire True Sea and simply walk to the Southern Colonies on foot. You could have sent Inej or Jesper in your place, you know. Why’d you want to go?”
“I have to make sure the job goes smoothly,” Kaz informs you. “Business is best handled by myself.”
You arch a brow. “Lovely. Good to know that you’ll never let something pesky like sea travel stand between you and your ambitions.”
Kaz snorts. “I should hope you’d already know that. And to answer your unspoken question, you’re here too because it’s foolish to take international jobs without someone at your back just in case of trouble. I trust you to not let homesickness for the Southern Colonies get in the way. I would advise you to stick to that.”
You smile. “Goodness, Kaz, you trust me? No wonder you didn’t want anyone else with us, if the rest knew you were shelling out compliments this easily they would have teased you for years.”
In the corners of your peripheral vision, you swear you can see a matching smile slide onto Kaz’s lips, but it’s gone the second you turn to look at him. “Precisely my thinking.”
The journey takes shorter than expected, or maybe that’s just your restless thinking. In no time at all, your ship is docking at a port of the Southern Colonies, and you’re turning in a slow circle on the coast, taking in every single sight you can.
“Careful,” Kaz tells you, “You don’t want to come across as too strong of a pigeon. We don’t want to attract any new friends who anticipate stealing something off of us.”
He’s smiling, though, and you swear there’s something a little lighter in his expression than you usually see. Maybe it really is the sea air getting to him, or maybe the fact that he’s out of Ketterdam’s grimy clutches lets Kaz relax even a fraction.
Regardless, you’re happy for it. “Ridiculous,” you say, laughing slightly. “Not all the world is like the Barrel, you know. We don’t do that sort of thing in the Southern Colonies.”
“We?” Kaz asks doubtfully. “Three steps you’ve taken off the ship and you’re already a proper citizen again, are you?”
You just grin. “What, are you jealous? Scared I’ll leave the Barrel?”
He doesn’t answer, but quickly changes the topic towards finding accommodations for the night and planning out an intelligence trip near the location where the jewels are being held. Even walking through the portside town and crossing the streets feels like magic, in a way. You lived not far from here, and everything from the curve of the avenues to the bright sun in the sky feels like coming home.
As it turns out, you and Kaz aren’t the only ones affected by the easy way of life in the Colonies. The two merchers you’ve been tracking are discussing business in broad daylight, obviously not anticipating anyone to have followed them. The job will be easy, and the few days you gave yourselves for extra planning are largely useless since no more details are relevant.
Instead, you take it upon yourself to explore the surrounding countryside. You tell Kaz that he doesn’t have to accompany you every time, of course, he can stay back in the portside town if he pleases, but he still goes with you. It’s funny, the more time you spend away from the city, the more you watch the burdens slowly lift from his shoulders, the light return to his eyes.
One time, while walking through a wooded path, Kaz tells you it’s because this reminds him of his home, as well. He grew up on a farm, once, under a different last name and in a different life. He’ll never have that time of his life back again, nor, you think privately, will you have yours, but it’s still lovely to wander around here and pretend that you could.
The job goes off without a hitch. Soon enough, you find yourselves sitting pleased with jewels and artwork hidden away in your luggage, all items recovered without their owners batting so much as an eye. You’ll leave early in the morning before they can notice you. You feel a pang in your heart at the thought of leaving already, but you hadn’t realized you weren’t the only one thinking about it until Kaz visits your room at the inn late that final night.
You had known it was him at your door from the moment you heard his crisp knock against the wooden paneling. No one else moves or lives like Kaz, with so much precision. When you let him in, though, he looks more wild than you’ve ever seen him. His hair, for once, has lost its impeccable style and gone wild and unkempt. His shirt is wrinkled and rolled up to the elbows. It would still be a good look on him were it not for the fact that you’ve never seen him so little put together in the entire time you’ve known him.
Kaz doesn’t say a word until he is certain that the door is shut and bolted behind him. Then, all of a sudden, the words burst out of his throat, so beseeching that you have to wonder how in Ghezen’s name he managed to keep them from you for so long. “Don’t stay here,” he says. “Come back with me.”
You frown. “Who said I was staying? We’ve both got tickets on the ship departing next morning, Kaz.”
He waves a hand frustratedly to signal his disbelief in this statement. “Tickets don’t mean a thing. I need you to say it.”
“I did,” you frown. “Where else would I go?”
“Here,” Kaz says heatedly. “I’ve seen the way you look at the buildings, this place. You want to say here. Don’t you do it, Y/N.”
You shake your head softly. “I love it here, yes, but it’s not my home anymore than Ravka across the sea. I’m going back to the Barrel, Kaz.”
“With me,” he says uncertainly.
“With you,” you confirm. “Goodness, Kaz, did you really think I would stay? How could I do such a thing?”
“It’s very easy for people to leave,” he tells you. There’s a heaviness in his eyes that reminds you of brothers that have been buried, of farms that have long been sold to undeserving families that were not his.
“Not me,” you whisper. “Not if it was you I was leaving.”
His eyes, which have been sweeping your figure this entire time, looking for some twitch of a finger or jump of a pulse to betray you for lying, leap up to yours again. “Okay,” he says at last. “Okay.”
He leans back slightly, wavering on his heels. “I– I’ll go back to my room, then.”
Kaz doesn’t look as if he much savors the idea, and you decide to spare him from his thoughts, just in case. “You can stay here, you know.”
A soft breath is released. “That would– I could do that.”
He does. And, as your candles burn closer to the quick, as the night settles over this city, you cannot help but be glad for the time when you’ll find yourself in a different one. It has been nice to be here, but you would like to go home. And, most importantly of all, you are glad that Kaz will be there with you.

i’ll be the one if you want me to- kaz brekker x reader
“Is he still angry?” Jesper asked and you didn’t have to ask for clarification on who he was talking about, the events of last night still fresh in your mind.
“What do you think?”
Jesper didn’t say anything, taking another sip of the drink he was nursing.
“What is he so angry about anyways? I wasn’t aware that dancing with you was illegal.” Jesper complained and you swiped the drink away from him as soon as he put it down, taking a sip of it for yourself.
Your face scrunched, not expecting the alcohol to be that bitter, before sliding it back over to Jesper.
“I don’t understand how you can drink that shit this early.”
Jesper shrugged.
“It’s a learned skill. Useful for when you piss off Kaz Brekker.”
“I should just talk to him, he’s being ridiculous.”
“I should just apologize, I shouldn’t drag this out any longer than necessary.”
“You’re not the one dragging it out, Jes. Besides, you did nothing wrong. I’m allowed to dance with who I want without him getting all pissy about it.”
“Yeah, well… you know. He does have a soft spot for you.”
You scoffed, shaking your head.
“He does not.” You said and Jesper gave you a look before the door to outside opened.
He turned around and grinned.
“Nina! True or false, Kaz has a soft spot for our good friend here.”
Nina appeared on Jesper’s side, looking dubiously at the alcoholic beverage he was nursing.
“Saints, you’re starting early today. True, obviously, why?”
“He does not! If you had danced with Jesper last night, Kaz would not have given the both of you the silent treatment for the last twelve hours.”
“Well, that’s because he’s in love with you. He was jealous. I would be jealous if I saw Matthias dancing with another girl.”
You fell silent.
“You and Matthias are dating.”
“And you’re going to tell me you and Kaz aren’t? That all of those longing looks are completely platonic?”
“I’m going to talk to him.”
Nina paused.
“Are you sure you’re in the best space of mind to do so?”
You didn’t respond as you stood up from your chair, heading back to the Slat, determined.
Kaz doesn’t look up as you open the door to his office without knocking, nor as you close the door behind you.
“You don’t get to be jealous, Kaz.”
He stopped working on whatever it was that he was writing, setting the pen down.
“I’ve never been jealous of anything.”
“Then what was last night?”
He didn’t say anything, shifting his jaw.
“It was nothing. It was… misplaced anger.”
You took a deep breathe, shaking your head.
“Don’t lie to me.”
“What do you want me to say?”
“The truth. For once.”
He stayed quiet, unable to meet your eyes.
“Tell me that you want me. Tell me to stay. And I will, and I will never ask you to say so again.”
Finally, he looked up.
“Is it not obvious?”
“It’s really not.” You said, your voice nearly breaking.
“I-” He started, his voice catching in his throat and breaking, unable to continue.
He looked down, his eyes closed.
You felt yourself deflate, tears in your eyes.
“Tell me to stay, Kaz, and I will. But when I exit this door, I’m gone.”
It feels like an eternity that you wait, that you stand there in his office foolishly, asking for something he can never give you, because these are the simple facts of the situation: Kaz Brekker will never ask for you to stay.
He will never pull you closer or grab your wrist while you’re walking out.
He will never ask you to stay because there is vulnerability in asking, in wanting.
He will watch you dance with Jesper, will watch you talk with Inej and giggle with Nina, will watch you look at him with inexplicable fondness and do nothing at all about it.
You say nothing to him as you turn, speak nothing of the hope you still hold out for him.
The door shuts behind you and safely, behind the cover of wood and walls, his face contorts into anger and sadness and he hits his desk, slams his cane into a bookcase, does everything but rush out after you.
And you let him go.

Kaz crumpled yet another piece of paper and tossed it to the side, still unable to collect his thoughts.
The heist went sideways hours ago and he hadn’t been able to figure out why or how he should’ve been able to prevent it.
It had never taken him this long before, he was usually done within a few minutes and spent the rest of the night sulking.
Meaning it really shouldn’t take him long tonight since it was only a minor deviation and not much of a set back.
He should’ve been able to figure this out hours ago.
However, y/n had never not been in his office after a night like this.
Kaz sensed things were tense between them lately but since he didn’t know why he elected to let it blow over.
As he sat alone in his messy office tonight, he regretted that decision.
Clearly that was another plan he made that failed.
Begrudgingly he rose from his desk, bracing himself on his cane as he walked to the door.
If she wasn’t coming to him, he’d go to her.
Kaz lingered outside her door as his mind raced to find the best way to greet her.
She was already mad, but he didn’t know why and therefore which side of him would be most helpful here.
If he let Kaz Rietveld greet her and she’d been mad about one of his triggers or weaknesses that would make it worse.
Not that y/n ever got upset let alone mad over that, but Kaz anxiously awaited the day he felt was inevitable.
If he let Dirtyhands Brekker greet her and she was mad he’d been too distant or mundane it would surely piss her off more.
He sighed, annoyed at himself for even allowing himself to get so attached to her that he cared about these things.
Kaz tapped his cane against her door twice and awaited a response.
He heard some shuffling around before y/n opened the door for him.
Her hair was a bit disheveled from seemingly running her hands through it, but it was clear she’d tried to fix it before opening the door.
“Love,” he greeted briefly, the versions of himself compromising.
She smiled nervously at him which made him sigh.
“May I?” He asked, tipping the crow’s head end of his cane in the direction of her bedroom chambers.
A room in which she rarely ever was, having usually been sleeping in his room while he worked.
Kaz watched her throat tighten as she swallowed before nodding.
He took inventory of her room, the way he would any room he’d stepped into where he felt unsure of his surroundings.
He’d been in here before but tonight he was unsure where he stood with her and hoped the room would provide him some clues.
Y/n’s bedding was wrinkled and the poorly made bed was evidence she’d futilely tried tucking the sheets back into place before letting him in.
Kaz tightened his grip on the crow’s head, despising himself for whatever he did that prompted her to chose to sleep here instead.
Sure it was her room, but he couldn’t recall the last time she’d actually slept in it.
“Kaz…” she mumbled, standing a solid distance away, “you look like you have something on your mind”.
Kaz pressed his lips into a tight line as he turned to face her, but was unable to look into her eyes and ask his question, “are you mad at me?”.
Her silence caused him to turn his gaze upwards from the floor and to her face.
He watched the shocked look on her face turn to confusion before she shook her head, “No Kaz. I’m not mad at you”.
“Y/n, do not lie to me” he grumbled.
“I’m not” she sighed.
He stared at her and took a step closer to her, noticing how her body tensed when he did, “you’ve been distancing yourself from me. Yet, you claim you are not mad?”
Y/n quickly looked to the far wall as if one of her pinned up photos was suddenly more interesting than this conversation.
Yet, in a whispered voice she still spoke, “I’m not mad, Kaz”.
Kaz squinted, taking a step back to create more distance for her, “are you afraid of me then?”
She snapped her head towards him, a concoction of confusion, shock, anger, and guilt storming her face, “of course not!”
“Then tell me” he ordered, closing his eyes for half a second to compose himself, “if you’re not suddenly scared of me, tell me why you are distancing from me if you’re not mad”.
“I…I’m… not mad… I umm.. I’m..” she mumbled, biting her lip.
Kaz gave her a concerned look and took a cautious step towards her again, continuing when she didn’t look away.
“You’re not mad, but you are… what?” He asked calmly, a foot from her now.
“Frustrated” she whispered.
“What?” He repeated, not sure he heard her correctly.
“Frustrated!” She blurts loudly, looking away and pulling in her hair, “I’m frustrated, Kaz”.
“Frustrated is synonymous to mad, love” Kaz sighed harshly.
“Not that way” she said, shifting her gaze around rapidly.
“I don’t und-“ he stopped, realization hitting him.
He’d read the signs wrong.
Her hair wasn’t a mess due to running her hands through it out of anger.
His eyes shifted to her bed.
The bedsheets weren’t wrinkled and a mess because she’d been sleeping in them.
“Were you just touching yourself?” Kaz asked, the tension in the room thickening.
He noticed she refused to look at him, so he gently tapped her toe with the bottom of his cane.
She still didn’t look at him but nodded minimally.
Kaz felt his face heat up and an uncomfortable feeling form in his body at her confession.
Well, it wasn’t the feeling that was uncomfortable, it was the knowledge he couldn’t act on it.
The knowledge that he’d found himself needing sexual relief on numerous occasions with relation to her and not being able to act on it due to his touch aversion.
He hated that he put her in that same position and also that he couldn’t offer either of them the release they both needed and desired.
The biggest irritation he had with his aversion was that his body still held the capacity for desire and sexual attraction but he couldn’t act on it.
He hated that he wanted more than anything to be able to take her here and now but the thought also made him nauseous.
“Show me” Kaz said faintly, his brain body desperate for a compromise.
“What?” She squeaked, her eyes finally landing on his dark and fully dilated pupils.
“Show me what you like” he repeated, taking a slow step towards her bed.
“Kaz, what?” She asked breathlessly as her eyes widened.
He looked at the ground in guilt, “I cannot give you what you want”.
Y/n began to interrupt but he held his gloved hand up to signal her to stop.
“But, I’d like to see what it is you want” He said, his voice shaking.
He wasn’t sure he could handle this.
Sure she’d be touching herself, not him touching her.
But, he felt he might combust watching her get herself off by doing things to herself he could only dream of doing to her one day.
“Kaz. We don’t have to do this” She offered kindly, sensing his nervousness.
“I want to. I want to watch. Touch yourself for me. Be my hands” Kaz declared, his pants already feeling tighter as he admitted this desire.
Y/n took a shaky breath but nodded and made her way to the bed, unceremoniously crawling onto it.
She wasn’t opposed to it, but she knew intimacy was intense for Kaz and she didn’t want to push.
Y/n bit her lip as Kaz moved to stand beside her bed, as close as he’d allow himself to be.
“Kaz, I know this is really vulnerable for you, so we can take this as slow as you need and stop whenever. You’re in control here, okay?” She promised, staring into his eyes.
Kaz’s eyes softened for a moment -as he offered her a small smile and nodded-, before they shifted back to their dark state with a recently displayed lust tinting them.
He’d seen her naked before, having changed in front of him countless times at this stage in their relationship, but this was different; for both of them.
She felt her heart quicken, her hands trembling with nerves as she shyly started to lower her pants once again.
“Love, don’t be nervous, if you need, I’ll guide you through it. Just be my hands” Kaz heard himself state, surprising them both.
Y/n took a deep breath of air and nodded rapidly.
Kaz smirked, his eyes closing lustfully as he let them both catch their breath before beginning.
When he opened them, his pupils dilated again seeing she’d stripped out of her pants and panties, her lower half now fully exposed to him.
“Fuck” he breathed out, letting a rare curse slip.
She blushed but kept her eyes on his with a small smile on her lips.
“Shirt” he said, clarifying when his request was met with confusion, “your top too”.
Y/n smirked at him as she slowly removed her shirt to display her bare breasts before him, practically making him hard right away.
He swallowed thickly, adjusting his stance awkwardly, “you are perfect”.
Kaz learned long ago she loved him complimenting her and while he’d let that vulnerable side of him out more often since that discovery, this was new.
He’d reassured her how beautiful she was the first time he’d seen her naked body, needing to help her patch up a cut on her rib and thigh after a heist.
But this, this time, she was laying here before him, not because she was hurt or getting ready for bed.
Instead, she was all but presenting herself to him; a vulnerable and important moment for them both.
Kaz stared into her eyes, making sure she was comfortable with what they were about to do.
When he felt confident she was, he shut his eyes and softly said, “show me what you were doing”.
She nodded, looking down at her waist, her hand moving towards her center.
Y/n gazed off into space as she slowly ran her pointer finger down her pubic mound towards her lips.
Kaz eyes fixed on her finger, wanting so badly for it to be his own touching her that way.
He took a shaky breath at the thought of his son on her’s making her immediately stop and stare at him with concern.
He shook his head to calm her worries, “Don’t stop. Just, talk to me during it”.
She nodded, remembering how he’d cling to the sound of her voice when anxious.
“So,” she said with a breathy shyness, “ when I find myself needing a release, I start with this”.
Kaz focused on her voice and explanation while his eyes studied her demonstration and instructions with such intensity it was as if her pleasure were a heist he must successfully complete.
After a few minutes Kaz had become more comfortable and realized the bulge in his pants was already a step ahead of him.
He blindly reached for her desk chair, knowing he should sit.
But he couldn’t find it without looking away from her, and he wasn’t able to do that.
Kaz stared as her thighs clenched together, firmly trapping her hand between them.
"Spread your legs. I want to see how turned on I make you” he said, looking from her seized legs to her dazed eyes.
Her lips parted slightly as she complied, her hand now being the only thing blocking his view of her full anatomy.
“More” he said, his deep voice betraying his pleading, as did his gloved hand faintly placed on her closest knee.
“I love hearing you moan” Kaz blurted, pressing his hand firmly against his throbbing shaft through his pants.
She looks at him through hooded eyes, the fingers on her left hand still inserted into herself.
“Curl your finger” Kaz advised, an idea forming in his mind.
Y/n smirked lazily at his newly formed scheming face as she followed his suggestion.
“No, no, your ring finger” he corrected, his piercing eyes that were frozen on her swollen and flushed bare skin around her vulva, unsatisfied with the choice she made.
“Oh saints!” She cried out, her head slamming back into her bed aggressively.
Kaz felt his dick twitch as he proudly relished in her loud moans and watched her hips lift off the bedsheets.
“Mmm, that’s it, good girl” Kaz said, his voice dark.
Y/N’s eyes flitted closed as she twirled her hooked finger around inside of her walls, trying to not be so loud as she didn’t want to risk the others hearing.
“Mmm, come on darling” he whined, “let me hear you.”
She stirred slightly before pushing her fingers in deeper, moaning pleasurably as her vaginal opening stretched even more.
“That’s it” he grinned, his sight clouding a bit as he unconsciously began stroking his length through his dress pants, “I want to hear you say my name”.
Y/n needed a moment, so she slowly pulled her now soaking wet fingers from her vagina and rested her hand on her stomach, smirking at him.
“You what?” She teased, pretending she couldn’t hear his request.
His vision cleared as he lightly glared at her, “you heard me”.
She hummed, dancing her fingers tauntingly over her exposed skin from her neck down to her hips, “I don’t know that I did… Kaz”.
Kaz’s head snapped to the side quickly, his hand reaching out and pulling the desk chair to him.
He sat down just as his knees threatened to buckle from the tension between his legs and the sight of y/n sprawled teasingly before him.
Kaz knew he wasn’t going to win this, especially in his current state, so he repeated himself, “I need to hear you say my name”.
She smirked at him, “Kaz”.
He threw his head back in frustration with so much force he was surprised the chair didn’t break under him, “you know what I mean”.
Y/n loved seeing him like this, over her.
So she decided to drag it out a bit more, smiling innocently as she asked, “no, can you elaborate what it is you need me to do, Kaz?”.
Kaz clenched his jaw, returning his head to its normal position and watching the devilish glimmer in her eyes, “don’t push it, you’re the one who needed this. I can leave any moment”.
Y/n saw through his bluff, tilting her head sideways as she pushed her self up until her arms were supporting her back and half raised position.
“Kaz, honey, you can pretend all you want” she winks, bringing her still wet fingers up to her face and tracing the outline of her lips, “but I can see the mess you're making of yourself”.
He froze in confusion, following her gaze as she stared at his lap.
Kaz felt his cheeks double in temperature as he saw he’d practically ruined his dress pants.
The material now wet and clinging to him.
He closed his eyes and sighed.
“It’s okay Kaz, but I don’t think you’re quite done” she whispered sweetly, “why don’t I help you?”
Kaz stared up at her, his eyes soft but jaw tense, “I-… I can’t… yet.. I-“.
She shook her head, “I’m not going to touch you honey, I promise”.
He nodded appreciatively.
“You wanted me to moan your name?” She asked delicately.
He forced a weak glare making her laugh softly, “I can do that. But first, remove your pants”.
Kaz hesitated for a moment before standing enough to lower them to the floor.
“Now your underwear, the poor things are very clearly in both of our ways” she added, Kaz sighing tranquilly as he pushed the hem of his underwear towards the ground and let his penis fly upwards when it was free.
“Now, cup one hand around yourself, from underneath” y/n said, her gaze never leaving his erection.
Kaz obeyed, shivering as his cold leather glove wrapped around his length.
Y/n moaned lightly, Kaz’s eyes jumping to watch as her fingers walked down her bare body to her clit.
“With the other, rub the tip” she whispered seductively.
Kaz didn’t hesitate to do so and mirrored her moans with his own as he did.
“Look at me” Kaz rasped as her gaze has shifted to her waist.
“Oh, fu-“ y/n sighed, the knot in her stomach growing.
Kaz clenched his jaw more tightly as he continued masterbating as she had requested, but secretly trying not to climax yet.
He was fairly certain the leather in his gloves was going to cause his shaft to be raw by the end of the night but he couldn’t care less.
“Cum for me” he ordered sharply, not sure how much longer he could resist his release.
Y/n sensed his predicament and puckered her lips to blow him a kiss, “just let go Kaz”.
Kaz shook his head, but as she resumed circling her clit he found his resistance weaning.
“More pressure” he advised her, having made mental note of what seemed to work best for her earlier in the night.
“Ka-Kaz,” she moaned, her eye lids fluttering as she pushed her thumb harder against her clitoris.
At that, Kaz’s self preservation disintegrated in an instant.
“Oh” he moaned, his voice breathy, “fuck”.
He threw his head back, his neck bending as the back of his head rested between his shoulder blades.
“Don’t stop doing what I taught you. You’re being my hands, remember? Keep moving” She ordered, a smirk painting her tone.
“Y-y/n” Kaz shakingly mumbled, his eyes glazed over, “fuck, you’re… fuck”.
Kaz was certain it was the least intelligible thing he’d ever spoken but the bliss he felt kept him from caring.
He wiped the white cream from himself and the bedspread next to her, too relaxed to be embarrassed over the mess he made and how vulnerable he was.
“Shit, Kaz” she groaned, her lips curling at the ends as she watched him.
“Cum for me” he repeated his earlier request.
Y/n chuckled softly, tiredly bringing her hand back down to her wet lips.
“Kaz” she moaned softly, her eyes glimmering as she held eye contact with him.
Kaz smiled faintly, lifting his cane.
He delicately tapped the side of the crow’s beak to y/n’s swollen clitoris twice before lowering his cane back to the floor.
She shivered at the cold sensation before her eyes darkened as she looked back over at him.
He nodded with a smirk on his lips, “keep your eyes open and on me”.
Y/n silently obeyed, her fingers picking up their pace.
Kaz’s smirk grew as he watched her desire increase.
He intentionally ran a hand through his hair, having been clued in that it was a turn on for her.
She grinned and shook her head weakly, letting him know she knew what he was doing.
Triggering another turn on, Kaz held eye contact with her as he smirked more before licking his lip, “so unfathomably irresistible”.
Kaz lips shifted into a cocky grin as she loudly whimpered his name, her back arching towards the ceiling and legs trembling.
“That’s it darling, just keep being my hands” he encouraged, watching as she softly stroked herself as she rode out her orgasm.
“While I must point out that we could have started this much earlier had you not hid, I do prefer the location” Kaz stated, handing her a towel from her dresser.
“Oh?” She asked, her voice still faint from her climax.
“It means I don’t need to clean my sheets” he smirked teasingly.
She scoffed, feigning offense.
“Hmm, well, I suppose we’ll see if the door will be unlocked next time or not” she teased, delicately cleaning herself up.
Kaz squinted at her as he pulled his trousers back up.
“Fine, I can begin washing my sheets” he complied.
“You haven’t been washing them?!” She gasped, wanting to smack his shoulder.
Kaz chuckled, a laugh he’d only allow the person currently before him to ever hear, “Of course I’ve cleaned them; you sweat in your sleep”.
Y/n’s jaw dropped as she stared at him in shock, somehow mortified over the idea of her sleep sweating in his bed, despite what just happened in here between them.
Kaz laughed loudly, his dimples showing as he shook his head, “darling, it was a joke. You’re perfect”.
Y/n placed the towel on the other side of her, turning to face Kaz as she tugged on her blanket.
He smiled tenderly at her - another behavior only she’d witness- before standing to help pull her blanket over her body the way she wanted.
His gloved hands were sure to never touch her skin during the act.
But, as he set the fabric over her bare chest, he sucked in a deep breath before he slid his gloved fingers under her arm to tuck in the blanket.
He’d touched her skin more directly than that by now, but after the intensity of the moment immediately prior, he didn’t want to risk ruining the intimate moment they shared by taking a chance.
She smiled up at him, her body relaxed and eyes heavy.
Kaz nodded as he sat back down in his chair.
“Kaz” She whispered, waiting until he nodded again for her to continue.
“Do I swear in my sleep?” She asked, making him laugh again.
He rolled his eyes, “I honestly would not know. It’s my obsessive need to stick to a routine that prompts me to wash our sheets, not you “.
Her shoulders lowered as she nodded happily, “okay. So your room next time?”.
Kaz smirked, resting his gloved palm a few centimeters from her arm, “as long as you’ll continue to be my hands for now, we can do whichever room”.
“If you’ll be my hands taking care of you, I’ll be yours” y/n promised, grinning tiredly at him.
Kaz nodded in agreement, “the deal is the deal. Now, rest”.
Y/n grinned at him once more before letting her eyes close, peacefully falling asleep.

You said crows are closed but I’m willing to change your mind.
Crow is the captain of the ship that takes the crows to the ice court. Giving kaz orders and such.
AN: I am sosososososo excited for season two of Shadow and Bone, so here's to opening up the Crows again. Strayed a little away from the prompt, but I had an OC in my head I was basing this off of. So, please enjoy <3
TIDEMAKER, NOT TIDEMAKER
GN!READER X PLATONIC!CROWS
Tumblr media
"And then twist, and pull." You commanded, grinning when Inej formed the perfect Sailors knot. "Perfect, Nej."
"Thank you for teaching me." You helped hoist her up, as her side was still stiff from where the gunshot had been.
"You are an excellent student, who listens to commands." You gave a pointed look to Jesper, who slowly lowered the cannonball he was holding.
"It rolled towards me, fate." He surrendered, whistling as he walked back towards Nina who was leaning against the bannister of your ship talking with Wylan.
Lord forbid you were talked into using your baby for one of Kaz's heists, though a Crow stays with the flock - or whatever it was Jesper said to boost morale after a particularly bad heist.
You may not belong to the Dregs, or the Dime Lions, or any gang. But, the idiots currently roaming around your ship were your closest friends... and you were promised a cut if you put your tide making skills to good use.
"Inej, keep practicing. I need to find Brekker - I haven't seem him in far too long, and last time I caught him eyeing up valuable items on my ship." Inej smiled softly, bidding you farewell with a nod as she went back to undoing the knot.
You two had both once belonged to the Menagerie; and whilst Inej learned to stitch herself up and join the Dregs, you had learnt how to tie knots and fled to the seas to become the infamous Pirate, who was a fond deliverer to Fifth Harbour.
Though the sea wasn't as free as it seemed, your debt to those in higher up places meant you always had to come back to Ketterdam. To interfere with them, would be the end of your sails.
"Kaz I don't think that's a good idea." You shot back into reality, blinking against the harsh sea breeze as you spotted Kaz taking the wheel of the ship.
"Brekker, get your slippery hands off my baby."
"No wonder she doesn't flirt back, she's in love with her ship." Nina teased, but you marched past her and up the short flight of stairs to glare at Brekker.
"You were heading the wrong way." Kaz answers your glare, and before he can even utter another word you have whipped your hands in an arch. The vein in your head throbbing, as you brought the ship to a complete stop. "Could you stop that, we are on a tight schedule."
"This is my ship Brekker, I know how to steer it."
"The map says your wrong." He released the wheel, clunking his cane down heavily. "I was fixing the mistake."
"If Matthias wasn't sleeping, I'd ask him to use all that Fjerdon muscle to haul you overboard."
"You are overreacting."
"Step away from the wheel." Your voice grew harsher, as the ship rocked dangerously. "I don't touch your cane, you don't touch my ship."
Kaz stared. You stared.
Five minutes later you were happily steering the ship, as Kaz sat on a crate beside you with the map across his knees. Kaz Brekker was many things, but he knew one thing.
As Inej had her claws, you had your ship. You two would both go down fighting if that was threatened, and Kaz knew better than to push those buttons.
"Slightly East." He ordered, and you moved the wheel with one hand, using the other to guide the waters behind you so that your travels were shortened.
"Has anyone got a bucket!" You grimaced as Wylan ran out frantically waving his hands, "I think Jesper is going to be sick, and he's threatening to do it over my plans if I don't find a bucket.
You sighed with a grin, letting the ship slow as you nudged a bucket towards Wylan with water from the sea. He stared at it transfixed, before snatching the bucket up and scurrying away causing Nina to let out a loud laugh.
You were the Captain of the ship, taking the Crows to the Ice Court, and not a single one was listening to the orders you had given out earlier.
This heist could only go well...

néant doux-amer / bittersweet nothingness
Tumblr media
Summary: YN knows she’s going to die any minute now after a mission that went wrong. She know she has to accept it, but she’s scared. Luckily for her Kaz, the only man she has ever felt safe with, finds her just in time to comfort her in her last minutes. What she didn’t know was the pain Kaz would experience second after she was gone.
Warnings: This story contains themes of violence, injury, death, fear, and grief. Terrible writing that is probably going to be edited soon. I did try to make this sad. No happy ending. Pretty short, but I’m planning a pt.2
Also: I used google translate for the title, so I have no idea if it actually makes sense.
YN lay on the dirty concrete of Ketterdam, her body riddled with bullets and her life slipping away. She knew that death was creeping up on her with every passing second, and there was nothing she could do to stop it. The fear had consumed her, and she felt helpless. Suddenly, she heard a familiar voice. “Y/N?” she looked up to see Kaz, the only man she had ever felt truly safe with, running towards her. “Oh saints, Y/n!”
Blood oozed out of the bullet wounds and stained her clothes a deep red. Kaz was on his knees beside her in a matter of seconds, trying to staunch the bleeding with his jacket. “YN, stay with me," he whispered desperately, fear etched on his face.
"I'm scared, Kaz," she said weakly. "Don't be scared. I'm here. I won't let anything happen to you," he replied, his voice shaky. But they both knew it was too late for that.
"Kaz, I don't want to die. Not yet," whispered YN. "I know dove, I'm here with you," replied Kaz, his tone soothing despite the fear in his own voice.
YN reached out a trembling hand towards Kaz, desperate for some human touch in her final moments. But Kaz's face twisted in fear, his phobia of physical contact preventing him from comforting her in the way she needed. "It's okay, YN. You're not alone." He said while fighting the demons in his head that dared to be so cruel by keeping him from touching her in her last moments.
Tears filled YN's eyes as she looked up at Kaz, knowing that he was the only person who truly understood her. She took a shaky breath, knowing that her time was running out.
"Thank you, Kaz. -”And something in his mind clicked, the voices filling his head went silent for a moment and he realized that she needed him. With trembly hands, Kaz took his gloves out and granted Y/n’s last wish by taking her hand in his. “-For everything." Said Y/n with a weakened smile. Kaz leaned in closer, "Anything for you, dove."
In that moment, YN's eyes closed for the last time and her hand fell limp. Kaz's heart shattered, knowing that he had just lost the only person he truly cared for. He sat there for a moment, overwhelmed with sadness. She was gone and he was, once again, left alone fighting the demons in his head that were telling him to let go as her hand grew colder, and colder but he couldn’t. Tears streamed down Kaz's face as he clutched onto YN's lifeless hand. He was barley able to touch her while she was alive but was now holding onto death so tightly because that was all he had left from her.

Kaz Brekker x gn! Reader - You're human, so be it
A/n: I got this idea while sick, and ooc Kaz, sorry not sorry. Also the reader is kinda a vibe in this fic not gonna lie
Summary: After you screw up a previous job your past comes to taunt to with memories and you can't help but overwork yourself
Warnings: mentions of past abuse, normal canon violence, injury, sickness, overworking oneself, swearing, panic attack (not extremely descriptive), I think that's it? You have been warned!
The three P's:
[Pronouns used: You/your] [Pov: 2nd person] [Pairings: (romantic) kaz x reader, (platonic) the crows x reader]
Tumblr media
Your last job you had fucked up on, you had disappointed the crows and Kaz. You could still feel their looks burning holes through your clothes until it seethed your skin. As Kaz's words echoed in your mind;
"We're all good at our jobs here Y/n, but if you can't reach the expectations then I can't have you on this team."
His words hurt, the cold shoulder the rest of the crows gave you hurt, it all reminded you of what your mother had been like to you;
"This family is good Y/n, but if you can't reach the expectations then you'll simply have to leave."
Your mother had always been one to fantasize about a perfect family, so that's what she tried to build. To everyone else on the outside it looked like your family really was perfect, but in reality there was so much controlling, and manipulation that a toxic environment quickly turned into abuse.
Your mother may have never hit you, but she was so controlling and manipulative, it was her way or the highway. If it wasn't done exactly to her instructions she would scream and howl at you, giving you terrible punishments set personally for every different child to make it as horrible as possible. Slowly you started to always try to met her impossible expectations, it got so bad that her classic phrase was nearly ingrained into your brain;
"Reasonable expectations, always meet them."
It was your household motto, unlike the other kids in your household you were always the closest to perfection that you could get for your mother. So the looks of disappointment she used to give you would always run a shiver down your spin and make you panic drastically.
Eventually you snapped and ended up on the streets with a weird talent for having an amazing memory. Photographic to be precise, although you were pretty sure it stemmed from what your mother had taught you. You always liked to over look that fact.
That was why Kaz had picked you off the streets and taught you how to fight, most of the crows already knew how to fight or had some semblance of something they could use for a weapon but not you. So you learned the why of the barrel through the six of crows having an arsenal of different skills in your pocket, by the end of the year you were already a crow and going on jobs with them.
After you had left your mother's place you had vowed to yourself that you would never let anyone put you in the state that she did again.
And as you became friends with the crows, you grew feelings for Kaz although you would never tell him because he didn't need another ego boost, and that the love was definitely unrequited. You never saw him return the looks that you gave him, he never treated you different from the rest of the crows, and Kaz in general was just the most emotionally unavailable person you had ever met.
Yet it still brought you back from when you were still living with your mother, those words were just so similar, the cold shoulders was also a tactic your mother used to use often. The fact that the triggering words came from Kaz made them even more painful.
Her words came back to your head, you thought you had healed but you were only starting to stitch yourself back up again, and all your stitch's had just been ripped open leaving a bleeding, gaping wound.
"Reasonable expectations, always meet them."
Then it became your motto again.
You started to work even harder, so you trained yourself over, and over again till your lungs were burning and your muscles were ready to give out. You took billions of small little solo jobs that were definitely were below your pay grade but in your mind you needed to prove yourself again. You didn't eat with the crows anymore you only ate on the go as you had been so busy, you took care of some of Kaz's paperwork secretly taking some of his pile and placing a signature where you knew you could do it, and it wouldn't be dangerous. Your memory did come in handy sometimes, it was the reason you were hired after all. You also took up extra shifts at the club either posing as a bartender or watching over the people and dealing with whatever pimp had decided they were cool.
You were barely taking care of yourself anymore, it showed with the bruises that littered your skin, the dark circles under your eyes and the franticness of your actions. Yet you couldn't stop, it was like Jesper and his gambling, you just couldn't stop. It was an addiction to prove yourself worthy of praise again, to meet the expectations that were set for everyone else again. To be deserving enough to have a place on the crows.
It was all so exhausting, and your body was screaming at you to stop but your brain wouldn't let you. What if they noticed you were slacking off? Would they think you were lazy? Would they be disappointed? Would they kick you out? Would he kick you out?
You were running a marathon no one else was, thus there was no winning, but you just couldn't stop. Because life's not that easy, trauma won't let the fish off the fishing line.
One day you were finally awarded to be allowed to go on a job with the crows again. When you had first heard the news you nearly wept with joy, yet you couldn't stop obsessing over it. You had to get this right, you just had too.
The crows weren't actually acting any differently towards you technically, you hadn't seen them much but they were still friendly towards you like before. You couldn't help yourself and be paranoid though, perhaps it was the fact that they hadn't let you on any other jobs again until now. So you could not. Mess. This. Up.
"Reasonable expectations, always meet them."
The plan was pretty simple, Inej would sneak in to the mercher's house to distract the party guests by turning the lights off, Matthias and Nina would pose as basically royalty from some far off country to take the focus off the host making him angry and distracted. While Wylan and Jesper would go undercover as servants listening in on the guests conversation so they could tell Inej when to turn the lights off. You and Kaz would be sneaking into the building as guards but would slip into the mercher's office when the lights were down to get some documents while you replaced them and Nina and Matthias bought you some time.
Then you and Kaz simply had to slink out of the office either; in an emergency, through a window in another room (as the merchant's office had no window) and run. Though, ideally getting back into your guard positions on time so you could walk out of the mansion without a problem while mentally flipping off everyone there and screaming in your head; "Haha losers, you didn't even notice a thing!"
Of course the victory walk wasn't necessary, but would probably help the crows stay off the radar of the merchant.
Yet as you walked through those doors dressed up in a uniform for the guards with Kaz beside you, you couldn't shake the feeling that something was going to go wrong. Maybe it was the fact that your body was bordering on it's limit of how much you could push it over the edge, or perhaps it was the slight shake in your hands as you feared the outcome. In your mind if you fucked this up the crows would be done with you, Kaz would be done with you.
So you ignored the soreness of what just walking had descended onto your body, and you quickly and effectively did the first part of your job perfectly as the adrenaline started to kick in.
Once the two of you entered the room Kaz had locked it behind him and nodded at you once. That was your only queue to start looking for the documents and you hurriedly got to work.
Looking through what felt like thousands of papers and folders you had finally found them and for a second you felt cool relief run down your spine reminding you how tired you truly are.
"Reasonable expectations, always meet them."
You couldn't think about that, you couldn't stop - not now.
"I found them." You spoke up and at the same time you heard gun shoots from outside your door.
Oh shit.
Scramming for the fake documents you quickly switched their places as Kaz hissed at you to hurry up.
Footsteps were coming closer to the door, and you readied your gun and walked as silently as you could behind the door while Kaz stayed out of view of it with his cane in hand.
You just hoped that the other crows had gotten out safe.
Suddenly the door got broken down and instantly, in a frantic move you shoot the guy in the head and the guard dropped to the ground dead.
You had killed very little people with your time in the crows, so killing shouldn't have been that easy. Kaz knew that, you should have tried another variable, hit him across the head with the gun, or shoot him in the hand or leg. Something was up.
Your heart squeezed in your chest yet your gaze only lingered on the guard for a split second before you were down the hall gun in hand readying yourself to jump out the nearest window.
"Reasonable expectations, always meet them."
Your vision wavered as you opened the door to the nearest room and it spun a tiny bit, but it wasn't too bad, you just figured it was adrenaline.
Opening the window you hopped out as you gestured for Kaz to come through. As he did you felt like throwing up everything in your stomach, there were black spots in your vision. You couldn't hear anything, and you could feel yourself panicking as you could only hear a ringing sound. It felt like someone was banging a stick against your head as you collapsed to the ground. Knees hitting the soil hard, and promptly passing out.
_______________
When you woke up you full on panicked.
"No, no, no!" You whispered as you sat up scanning the area around you hectically as you quickly realized it was Kaz's room/office.
Did they kick you out of the crows? Did they kick you out of the dregs and took pity on you for some reason? Perhaps Kaz was going to give you another one of his soul crushing lectures again. No, no, no!
Your chest felt like it had ten wolves on top of it, and your eyesight flickered which made you even more hysterical.
Panic attack, you were experiencing a panic attack.
You couldn't breathe, you really tried but it seemed impossible. Your hands shook as you curled into a ball despite the blankets that were on you.
"Y/n!" A raspy voice filled your ears and your eyes snapped up to meet his crow like eyes. Despite knowing that Kaz was there, that you weren't alone it didn't stop it, it didn't help.
It might have made it worse, because he was one of the reasons you were having it.
Crouching down beside your bed at eye level with you, he reached out a gloved hand to cup your cheek as you crunched your eyes closed.
"You did good Y/n, you did good."
Eventually your breathing even out and without realizing it you had leaned into the hand on your cheek. Slowly opening your eyes again your met with his dark eyes the color of beautifully terrible asteroids destroying worlds.
Smiling slightly you move away from his hand so he's no longer touching you.
"Hey."
Kaz scowled at you while standing up and crossing his arms.
"I'm taking you off jobs for the next two weeks."
Your jaw dropped and you couldn't help it when your eyes filled with water albeit it wasn't much. You were just pushed to your end, you didn't want to go back there again. You didn't want to be told you weren't good enough again.
"Reasonable expectations, always meet them."
"What! No fucking way!"
Kaz sighed dragging a hand over his face as if this was the most exasperating conversation he's ever had in his life.
"You need rest Y/n. When you fainted I thought you had been shot and were being an idiot and trying to hide it from me. But I found nothing."
Pausing, his eyes flickered down to your figure before looking back up into your eyes again.
"Nina quickly figured out that you were basically working yourself to death."
You were left there gaping like a fish, so he wasn't going to kick you off the crows for making a mistake?
Suddenly your mother's words didn't come to mind as the first response, it was something that Kaz himself had told you when you first started being trained.
"You're human, so be it."
Perhaps you needed to start acting like a human being again instead of some robot. You weren't perfect, and you had let your past get to your head.
Instead of saying this though these brilliant words came out of your mouth; "How did I get back?"
Kaz looked at you in almost disbelief that that out of everything was your question to him. Nothing about your health and what you should do to get better but nooo. It was how the ever loving fuck, did Y/n get back to the Slat?
"I carried you most of the way until we ran into Matthias and Nina, then Matthias had carried you the rest of the way to the Slat."
"You carried me?"
"I just told you I did."
You were a bit disappointed that you missed that, though you were sure it wasn't very pretty. Yet, your cheeks still burned when you thought of Kaz's arms around you, and his scent surrounding you.
There's a silence for a while before Kaz sits on the side of the bed and refuses to look at you.
Sighing you rub your hands nervously over your thighs.
"It's not your fault you know? Your words just triggered some stuff from the past and it sent me into a frenzy. That's none of their faults, and it's definitely not yours."
"I should have noticed.' He growled, while balling up his hands into fists.
"You have other things to worry about, and other people to care for. Nobody can blame you, you had other investments to look after." You say the end part almost bitterly.
Kaz shakes his head, his raven, soft hair with it.
"I should have seen something. I always see you."
"What do you mean?"
Kaz grits his teeth and lets out a frustrated grunt.
"I notice you Y/n, I can not notice you. You're every where I look, your everything I hear."
You froze as he moved closer to you realizing that this was basically Kaz Brekker confessing his love to you.
His (now ungloved) hand brushed up against your lips and danced down to to your pulse on your neck. Alive, he was making sure you were alive. Then with his other hand he laced your fingers together before slowly letting go after a couple of deep, loud breaths from the both of you.
"Was that you basically saying you love me?"
Kaz glares at you as he goes to sit on a chair close to your bed with papers in hand ready to start signing off and what not.
Did he really move a chair beside his bed so he could do work and watch you at the same time?
Rolling your eyes an affectionate smile graced your face as you gazed at the man.
"I love you too, Dirtyhands. I love you too."

consider: Kaz Brekker with the "who did this to you" trope
this is making me sad because of the fact you could play it both ways :(
The crew had been stuffed into a cargo ship for a week, so far, with another week to go. Everyone was getting irritable, angry, claustrophobic, and especially seasick. You were up on the deck trying to keep Jesper from hurling himself overboard. He was going mental, to put it lightly.
“I can’t stand this anymore, I’m going to float back to Kerch on Kaz’s suitcase.” Jesper threatened, bent over with his elbows on the wooden railing of the boat. He had his face in his hands, the only thing keeping him from being sick was the feeling of his cold rings against his skin.
“I’m not sure if he’d like that very much.” You lazily protested, because as long as Kaz’s temper wasn’t focused on you then you were fine. You reached over to place your hand across the sharpshooter’s back, to which he groaned and rubbed his eyes. You felt bad for him, he seemed to be having the hardest time with the sea.
“Promise me you’ll take the blame if I throw up everywhere?”
“No, Jes.. I won’t.”
You could hear him sigh, then he shook his head in defeat.
“You’re no true friend..”
You couldn’t help but have to stifle your laugh at Jesper’s dramatic rendition of sea sickness. If it weren’t for you to watch him, who else would make sure he didn’t go on a shooting spree due to this form of restless cabin fever? Your back was tired, though, and your feet were sore from all the standing and walking. For tonight, Jesper might have to find solace in something else.
“I have to go to bed or I’ll end up like you tomorrow..” You told Jesper, patting his back and walking back toward the sleeping quarters of the ship. It was smaller, with only three open rooms that the lot of you had to fight over. You were sharing a room with Kaz, which in retrospect was probably the best person to have to be cramped in a room with. Besides the fact he was irritable and grumpy and hardly spoke, you didn’t mind being in there with him. Plus, it meant you could be around him just a little bit more, even if it meant just mumbling out a tired and lazy goodnight and having him hardly groan in response.
You knocked on the creaking door of your room, waiting once for a response. When there was none, you tapped your fist against the wood once more just in case. Nothing. The rusting hinges of the door squeaked when you entered, and the lock clicking back into place was just as loud. “Dammit..” you muttered, reaching for the lantern that you kept beside the door on a table with a broken leg. This entire ship was falling apart. You weren’t sure why the lantern was burning, though, you swore you hadn’t lit it this evening when the sun was beginning to set. Nonetheless, you walked to your side of the room where your bed, a horrible excuse for a roll-out cot, was placed. All you wanted to do was get out of these horrible and stiff clothes. They smelled like sea salt, a common occurrence you noticed in all your clothes now that you had been on the ship for so long.
On the other end of the ship, Kaz headed to his room. He ran over the list of endless tasks in his head, what weapons he had to count and how many days until his crew arrived in Shriftport. The air was muggy, and damp, his bad leg leaving him with a more pronounced limp than usual. Like everyone on the ship, he wanted to be back in his own quarters, hunched over a blueprint with a glass of something bitter and cold.
Once he arrived at his door, your door, he noticed the handle wasn’t stiff. It was unlocked, meaning nobody was inside. Actually, you had just forgotten to lock it up once you had arrived only moments before he had. The door squealed with a high whine and Kaz’s cane hit the ground. Considering the combination of the two he assumed if anyone was hiding inside they’d surely know they were about to get walked in on. Kaz wasn’t prepared for what he was about to see once he walked into the small room.
Your torso was bare, leaving you in only the black pants of your once put-together outfit of the day. Your back was turned, but when you heard Kaz come in you tilted your head to the side to see.
Scars. There were scars that adorned your body in particular places Kaz did not remember you ever being wounded. He knew of each cut, each bruise, each goddamn strain or sprain his little Crow had endured. He didn’t recognize these. He had piercing blue eyes, ones that felt as if they’d leave their own scars if he wasn’t careful. You could see him, you knew he was staring, and if you weren’t frozen in place you might cower away. He dared to take a small step closer, barely inching toward you. You did not flinch.
“Who did this to you?”
You broke the eye contact, looking away as you held your top close to your chest. There was no answer you felt like sharing, but Kaz could see that. He knew that from the way your eyes shifted to the floor and you held your breath. Maybe you’d never answer, but Kaz demanded them.
“Your hip.” He pointed out with his gaze, and you didn’t have to look where he was staring to know what he meant.
“Yes..”
“Who-“
“Nobody, Kaz.. Nobody.” You forced him to stop, to keep his mouth shut for Saint's sake. It was silent for a moment, the both of you debating what to say.
“And your arms?” He spoke again, his rough voice going dry as he counted each discolored patch of skin across what was exposed. You shook your head, and Kaz found himself almost losing his breath with relief. Nobody. Then what? What happened?
“It’s best you don’t tell me.” He revealed, his eyes finally drifting to the floor below him.
“Why?” You asked, finally looking back to him again, clutching your shirt harder without even knowing. You were tiptoeing on the edge of each breath, your heart racing with the intimacy of the moment. Although, it always seemed like that with Kaz.
“Because if I found out what did this to you I wouldn’t rest until it was destroyed.” He didn’t look up, still, and part of you was grateful for that. If he would have looked up he would have seen the way your eyes went unfocused with the fog of new-coming tears. You took in a breath, one that felt dry in your throat.
“What’s done is done, Kaz.. Not even you can change that.” You replied almost regretfully like you wanted to believe that there was maybe a chance this stoic, bloody-minded, clever, handsome fucking asshole could change anything you’ve gone through. You could wish, and he could plot, but the scars would remain and you’d still remember how they got there.

HAVEN’T I GIVEN ENOUGH? ( Six of Crows x Reader )
AUTHOR NOTE! It makes me so happy to know that you requested my writing! I love this idea! I LIVE for angst / sad endings.. <3
prompt : Y/N wants to leave Ketterdam, but someone holds her back from doing so..
pairing : Wylan Van Eck x Older Sister! Reader, Six of Crows x Platonic! Reader
Tumblr media
Staring at the wrinkled ticket in her hand, she knew that she didn’t leave for another three hours. She had plenty of time to say goodbye. But, she didn’t want to. She knew that if she took the time to say goodbye, guilt would start to seep in. She’d be convinced to stay. She didn’t want that. She wanted to go. To leave and not have to worry about a promise of returning.
Chewing on her bottom lip, she lifts her eyes from the ticket, choosing to stare at the busy dock. Watching the people passing and going, muttering sea shanties under their breaths. Watching how crew members unload and reload their ships with crates. On the bitter smell of the spices and sea salt that lingered in the air. She wouldn’t miss any of this.
“Y/N?” A familiar voice calls out.
“Jesper?” She whispers, fear filling her.
Taking a fearful step back, she tightly grips onto the ticket, scared that he would try to take it away from her. He’d try to make her stay. She didn’t want that. He takes a step forward. She takes another step back, her legs hitting the back of her suitcase. His eyes dart down to the suitcase, she shifts, trying to cover it with her skirt. He doesn’t need to know. She could just play it off as spying on someone. Or handling family matters.
“What are you doing here?” He questions, furrowing his brows together.
“I⎯um⎯I..” She stutters out, her confidence completely gone.
“Are you leaving?” He asks, an almost hurt look on his face.
“No..Yes?” She tries, not sure how to answer.
“What⎯Why are you leaving? Has something happened? Are you okay?” He rambles, a look of concern taking over his face.
Weakly nodding her head, her hands tremble at her side, her heart pounding frantically in her chest. If he was a Heartrender he’d know something was wrong. But, he wasn’t. All she had to do was lie her way out of this one. Opening her mouth to speak, nothing comes out, but a weak ‘yeah’. What was she going to even say? What would sound real enough for  him to believe? Something that wouldn’t make anyone question her leaving?
“I’m fine, I have something I need to do. That’s all.” She whispers, which was technically the truth.
“That requires you to come to the docks?” He raises a brow, “All by yourself? Without anyone knowing?”
“Yes. Um⎯A great Uncle of mine, needs help? And I’ve come to help him..?” She lies, her voice raising at the end.
“You don’t have any great Uncle’s, Y/N. Your Uncle Fred died three years ago, Wylan told me.” He sighs, “What are you really doing here?”
“If I tell you, you’ll try to stop me. So let’s just pretend we didn’t see each other, yes?” She tries to deflect, her nerves growing.
“It can’t be that bad⎯” He laughs, but she cuts him off.
“For Saints sake, Jesper! I’m leaving for good! What don’t you get about that?” She blurts out, frustrated by his stupid ramblings.
His face pales at her words. Okay, perhaps, she shouldn't have said it like that. Gulping down the lump in her throat, he stares at her with wide eyes, his mouth opening and closing. And for a split second, she’s scared he’d bolt for the Crow Club. Ready to tell everyone her plans. Blinking a few times, the color slowly returns to his face, stutters of words come out of his mouth. Clearing his throat, his voice cracks, was it out of fear? Sadness? Nervousness? She couldn't tell.
“Where will you go?” He asks,
“I have friends in Shu Han. They’ve offered to take me in.” She lies.
No, she wasn’t. She had a ticket to Ravka. But, he didn’t need to know that. She didn’t need Kaz ‘I care about no one’ Brekker to search the whole bloody country looking for her. But, it wasn’t like she was in debt to him. She was just a bargaining chip in keeping Wylan in place. Another reason for her to leave.
“Can I ask why?”
“I’ve spent my whole life caring for Wylan. I never got the chance to do anything for myself. It was always,” She mocks her father’s voice, “Take care of Wylan, Y/N..Wylan wants to do this, Y/N..Just do whatever your brother wants, Y/N..”
She pauses, not trusting her voice. Licking her bottom lip, she tries to not think too hard about it. But, she doesn’t help but take a trip down memory lane. She never not got to do the things she wanted. It was always whatever Wylan or her father wanted her to do. Wylan wanted to visit the Universities Lab? She’d have to go with him. Her father wanted her to learn how to sew? Off to the market to get silks for her to practice with.
“Haven’t I given enough?” She questions, “When is it my turn to be selfish, hmm? Or am I supposed to just grit my teeth and ignore my needs⎯my wants?”
Holding his hands up in defense, she remembers that it wasn’t Jesper who had forced her. He was innocent in all of this bullshit. Taking a deep breath to calm herself, her shoulders sag, exhaustion taking over. She had given and given so much. Why was it such a big deal whenever she decided to stop? When she decided to be selfish?
“If⎯If leaving is what you need to do, then do it. I won’t stop you. But, what about Kaz? Wylan? Do they know of your plans?” He nods, making her stomach fill with dread.
“Tell them I’ve died for all I care. Just please let me go. I can’t spend any longer in this city, I need to leave.” She begs, “I need to take care of myself. I haven’t been able to do that in a long time, Jes.”
“Will you ever come back?” He asks, tears building up in his eyes.
“I..I don’t know yet.” She answers honestly.
More tears build up in his eyes. Shit. Shit. Shit! Biting down hard on her tongue, she resists the urge to make a promise to come back. She couldn’t promise him. It would be all she thought about while in Ravka. She’d let it overtake everything. She’d once again push herself to the side. Forcing down the guilt that threatened to fill her. She tightens her grip on the ticket, the feeling of the paper keeping her grounded. She was going to Ravka and that was the end of it.
“Promise to send letters? Just as a way of knowing that you are alive and well?” He asks, a wobbly smile on his face.
“I will.” She nods, “Just promise me, you'll look after him?”
“I will.” He nods.
Relief fills her at his promise. He was going to take good care of him. She just knows it. Offering him a soft smile,  she took a step back, ticket grasped tightly in hand. She’d be leaving soon. A giddy feeling blooms in her chest, she’d be going to Ravka soon. She’d find work. Get herself a nice little cottage in the countryside. Maybe, meet someone special. Picking up her suitcase from the floor, she tries not to show too much of her excitement. Turning to Jesper, tears fall down his cheeks, a trembling smile struggling to stay on his face.
“Do take care of yourself Jesper.” She waves.
“I will! I will! Now off you go, before one of us starts to cry!” He waves, his voice cracking.

to leave you behind
Tumblr media
a/n: let's not talk about how long its been or the fact this is likely (maybe) the last time i'll write for s&b...
summary: reader takes jurda parem instead of nina and kaz is losing it
To Y/N, they'd all accepted their imminent deaths far too easily. They'd done the impossible, they'd broken into the Ice Court. They were not about to die in a tank, a few hundred metres from the Ferolind and freedom.
She glanced over at Kaz. They'd hardly spoken since he'd fainted in the prison wagon. He'd been avoiding her gaze whenever they'd been together and barely acknowledging her existence.
Y/N was growing tired of it. She loved him, she'd come to accept that truth whilst wafting through the crowds at the Ice Court. Perhaps, deep down, hidden and suppressed, he loved her too.
But she had been waiting for too long. Her heart was aching and her mind was tired of the not knowing, of the constant hatred and love all at once.
Y/N looked from Kaz to the rest of their group. She loved them all in different ways. She trusted them all and knew that she'd gladly die for them all.
Which made the next decision that bit easier.
She turned to Kuwei. He noticed her gaze and looked back at her. Y/N didn't speak. The boys eyes widened.
"You don't understand -"
"I understand, Kuwei," Y/N said softly.
Kuwei reached into his pocket and pulled out the little leather pouch that had begun this whole heist.
"Y/N, what are you -" Kaz trailed off as his eyes fell upon the pouch, its rim stained with a rust-coloured powder.
"You're all out of tricks, Kaz," Y/N said, taking the pouch from Kuwei. She shrugged, a sad smile on her face. "What else is there?"
"No, Y/N, don't be ridiculous," Inej warned.
"Personally I think this is my greatest idea yet," Y/N replied, trying to hide her shaking hands. "Besides, not everyone gets addicted after the first dose."
"You can't risk it, Y/N!" Inej exclaimed.
"No, Y/N, she's right, it's not worth it," Nina said. "I'll do it."
"No," Matthias said, shaking his head furiously.
Y/N laughed tiredly. "I have no one to fight for me, Nina," she said softly, trying not to look at Kaz. "You do."
The voice echoed out from amongst the Fjerdan ranks, counting down, getting ever closer to the end. Y/N took a deep breath in. She mentally counted to three and then turned to look at Kaz.
She was aware of everyone else around them trying not to look. Y/N shifted her weight from right to left, bringing herself closer to Kaz. Their elbow brushed.
Y/N raised her hand and gently placed it against Kaz's cheek. She let her thumb trail over his cheekbone. He flinched, his eyes closing tightly. Y/N swallowed the disappointment.
"I expect ten percent of your cut for this, Kaz," she whispered.
Before anyone could realise what was happening, before Kaz could ground himself back into reality, Y/N tipped the parem into her mouth, forcing herself to swallow it in one stodgy swallow.
Instantly, her blood began to thrum, power surging through it, the fire making it grow hotter. She could hear her heartbeat, pounding away over and over and over again. Her cheeks were burning, sweat was running down the back of her neck.
Her fire was screaming to be released. All it needed was one spark.
No.
It didn't need any spark.
Y/N could feel it at her fingertips. It throbbed.
Her gaze moved across the Fjerdan soldiers. She could feel the gunpowder waiting to be lit. She could hear the pistols being loaded and cocked. She could feel the flicker of the flames dancing off the torches they held.
She tilted her head to the left. She focused her gaze on a bomb filled with gun powder.
Her fingers snapped. The fire shot across the space between them and hit the fuse, burning it up in seconds.
The bomb exploded.
Orange light lit up her face, she could feel the heat burning her skin. It was thrilling.
Everything was burning around her and Y/N could still feel fire burning through her veins, desperate to be released into the night.
Y/N took a deep breath in, letting the cold air burning her nose as she did so. As she exhaled, fire flowed from her fingers, lighting up the sky as it soared across and over the soldiers, sending them all scattering to the sides and into the water.
"Drive," Y/N said softly, looking ahead, staring at the fire as it burnt its way along the ground.
Kaz looked at her, a hint of fear in his eyes.
Tumblr media
In the middle of the True Sea, there was no fire. Y/N's desire to burn the whole world to the ground had faded to a dull ache. Instead, it'd been replaced be a reluctant sense of acceptance for what was to come.
She was sat on the main deck of the boat, her legs dangling over the edge. It was quiet out here. Everyone seemed to be avoiding her and, when they did run into her, giving her pitiful looks.
Y/N sighed, tilting her head back, letting the ocean spray hit her skin.
"I'm presuming you can't just burn it out your system."
She didn't even react. "No. I'll be burning myself from the inside out."
Kaz stepped forward and pivoted on his heel so he had his back to the railing. He leant backwards, holding his cane loosely in his hand.
"I won't take anymore," Y/N said quietly.
"I wasn't going to mention it," Kaz replied.
"Then why are you here?" Y/N asked, turning her head so that she was looking at him.
Kaz didn't speak. He didn't acknowledge that Y/N had spoken for a while. Eventually, he looked down at her.
"I wanted to talk before it begun."
Y/N nodded, turning back to look at the water churning as they passed. "I fear you're too late."
Kaz glanced down. Her hand rested on the railings, shaking even as it sat there.
Tumblr media
As the sun rose, the aches set in. Everything hurt, from her jaw to her toes. All Y/N could do was lie there, shaking, trying not to cry. Inej sat with her for a few hours, her cold fingers combing through her hair, massaging the back of her neck.
Nina, they had decided, was going to be a last resort. If she absolutely had to, she would lower Y/N's heartbeat enough that she went into a coma, allowing her body to work through the drug without causing her too much pain.
Every candle on the ship had been extinguished. Y/N could feel them burning even if they were the other end of the ship from her.
A few hours later, her skin began to burn. She lay on the bed, wearing the thinnest shirt she could find, unable to tolerate anything else touching her. All the blankets had been thrown to the side and her shirt was soaked in sweat. Y/N kept her eyes shut, trying to fall asleep, trying to pretend that what was happening to her wasn't happening.
When the tremors began, Matthias was sat beside her. In her delirous state she'd vaguely realised that they were all taking turns to sit with her, to watch her.
They're waiting for you to die.
"Do you need me to get Nina?" Matthias asked, gently dabbing her sweat covered forehead with a wet cloth.
Y/N shook her head. "No... not, not yet."
"Do you -"
"No," Y/N said, clutching her hands into fists. "No, I can't fall down into it, I can't Matthias, I can't."
"Okay, okay," Matthias whispered, dipping the cloth back into the water and then placing it back on her forehead.
Y/N didn't remember Matthias leaving. One minute he was next to her, the next he was gone and -
"Kaz?" Y/N whispered, turning her head to look at him.
"Y/N."
He'd undressed to just his shirt sleeves, rolling them up to his elbows. He still had his gloves on and his cane was resting against the wall next to him. But he was there.
"Why... what -"
"We're taking turns," Kaz said, his voice hoarse and quiet. "It was mine."
Y/N smiled but, as she did so, the aches overwhelmed her. Her bones felt like they might burst through her skin and her head was pounding, being squeezed through a vice. Her skin was burning, her face was on fire.
She groaned, arching her back as she tried to escape the pain, to free her sweat covered back from the mattress.
A cold hand landed on her arm, pushing her back onto the bed. Y/N groaned, tears rolling down her cheeks. Her heart was pounding, she could hear it.
"Kaz, I can't - can't do this, I can't -"
"Don't give up," Kaz said, leaning forward. His hands were bare, holding her arm down and combing through her hair. "Don't, promise me."
"I can't, Kaz, I can't," Y/N sobbed. "Please, please just -"
"No, don't you dare," Kaz replied, his voice firm. "You're not dying on my watch, Y/N."
Y/N cried, her back arching again, her nails digging into her palm.
The door opened. Kaz looked over, watching as Nina quietly walked in.
"I could hear her heartbeat getting faster," Nina replied, shutting the door behind her. "I wanted to check..."
Kaz looked back at Y/N. He turned to Nina. "Please, Zenik," he said quietly. "Just do it."
Nina stepped forward and sat on the edge of the bed. She took her wrist and pressed her fingers to her pulse point.
"Kaz," Y/N said, whimpering. "Kaz?"
"I'm here," he said, leaning forward. "I'm here."
"Stay till the end," she whispered, her tremors slowing down, her eyes growing unfocused.
"Y/N -"
"Promise me."
"I promise you," Kaz whispered, hand stroking her hair back from her face. He watched her eyes close as Nina gradually slowed her heart down. Y/N's eyes closed and her grip on Kaz's hand weakened, her body going limp as Nina put her body into a coma.
Kaz held tight to Y/N's hand. "I'm not going anywhere, Y/N."

Enchanted
pairing: kaz brekker x fem!reader
genre: fluff
el's thoughts: the first fic from the speak now event! requested by @wonderland2425 i hope you enjoy it! y/n is nikolai's sister in this story, but no physical traits are described
Tumblr media
“Princess!”
Y/N turned around to see some old family… friends, as her mother would call them.
“Oh my! How grown you’ve become.” The older man smiled and reached for her hand as his wife stood beside him with a tired smile.
“Yes,” she chuckled. “It has been a few years since I’ve been to a gathering like this. And I have to say, what a momentous occasion it is.” She looked down the hall desperately searching for someone to use as an escape. She saw two palace guards talking to each other and smiled. “I’ll have to excuse myself. I think my escorts are here.” She dipped her head into a bow of respect.
Placing her hands on the top layer of her deep purple dress, she walked away from the couple. She adjusted the off-the-shoulder neckline, her fingers running over the rhinestones around her shoulders. Once she was close enough she heard the female guard clear her throat as they both turned to face her.
“Your Highness.”
Y/N smiled kindly at the bronze-skinned girl and turned to the taller man beside her. “Will you escort me to the main hall, please? I don’t think I can stand another conversation with these people.” She chuckled to fill the moment of silence before he nodded and walked beside her.
She felt a bit uneasy as she let him lead the way. She made an effort to know every guard from her home yet these two had managed to slip past her notice. “Are you new?”
“Why would you ask that?” His voice was rough like rock salt as if he was getting over a sore throat.
“It’s just that, I typically know all of our staff back at the castle… I didn’t mean any offense.”
The guard nodded stiffly and turned the corner, walking into the main hall. He stood still, waiting for her to walk to the rest of the royal family but she continued to stay beside him.
Y/N felt his confusion and said, “I don’t feel like going in yet… Do you mind me waiting here?”
He looked down at her, his mind racing as if trying to solve a puzzle. “You’re the Princess, you shouldn’t be asking.”
“Well, I know, but you also have a job and you have orders from someone in a higher position. If you need to be somewhere else then you can leave.” Y/N smiled kindly.
It was as if her smile never left her face and her thoughtfulness was what she expected people to receive from her.
The hall fell into a hushed mummer as Alina walked into the room. General Kirigan led her to the stage and introduced her. He pulled the shadows of the room tighter and stepped back to let Alina take center stage. She clasped her hands together and pulled them apart, a ball of light floating between them. She brought the light to one hand and separated it into two orbs. She continued to push them towards the center of the room so the light reflected off the chandelier.
The people in the hall gasped and were awed at the miracle before them. Alina made the light fade and everyone slowly fell to their knees before her. Y/N placed a hand over her heart and bowed her head in prayer to the Saints, but she didn’t get on her knees. She was still the princess and she was told ‘bow to no one’.
Kaz cleared his throat and forced his eyes back on Alina as she made her way to the back of the room. ‘The mission,’ he reminded himself, internally scolding himself for staring at the princess during the light show. Scolding himself for noticing the way the light reflected in her eyes and the jewels on her dress and around her neck. ‘The mission.’
Y/N looked up at him and saw a distant yet determined look in his eyes. “You must have other things to do.” She stepped forward and turned to face him. “I’ll let you get back to your work, but I extend my gratitude to you for waiting with me.” She spun on her heel and pulled her shoulders back as she walked forward to her mother’s side. She froze in her steps and turned back towards him. “I didn’t ask for your name,” she said once she stood in front of him again.
Kaz’s mind screamed at him not to tell her but he found himself at peace in her presence. “Kaz.” The flash of recognition in her eyes didn’t go unnoticed.
“Kaz,” she smiled. “That’s a nice name. I’ll make sure to keep an eye open for you back at the palace.”
The Bastard of the Barrel stood there in a royal guard’s uniform watching the princess walk away from him.
~
Kaz and Inej walked towards where Jesper stood, leaning against the stone statue.
“What happened, are you okay?” Jesper asked as he looked over Inej.
“She’s real, Jesper. She made the light sing.”
Kaz glared between the two. “We lost her.”
“Did we?” Jesper smirked.
“We don’t know where she is,” said Kaz.
“Don’t we?” The Zemini laughed, “Just ask.”
“Jesper…” Kaz’s tone was a warning.
“Just ask.”
The three crows climbed onto the carriage, Jesper taking the reins with Kaz beside him while Inej stood behind the pair.
“Just ask,” said Jesper again.
“Fine. Do we have a fix on where to target it?” asked Kaz.
Jesper smiled and shook his head, getting the horses into a trot.
Kaz sat silently beside Jesper staring blankly ahead. His mind went back to his encounter with the princess in between thinking of the sun summoner. He didn’t believe in love at first sight and he knew he never would, but his curiosity was piqued, to say the least. He wanted to know more about her and figure out why she was the way she was. Why she was so kind to a stranger in a familiar uniform?
“What are you thinking about?” Inej asked over his shoulder.
“Nothing.”
“C’mon, you can tell us,” chimed Jesper.
“I said nothing.”
The two crows knew better than to push him farther but also knew better than to believe it was nothing.
Inej had seen Kaz stare at the princess during and after the light show. She knew the princess confused him and he wanted to solve the puzzle. And she knew he’d put it aside till this job was done.
~
“Nikolai!”
“Y/N!”
The younger sibling wrapped her arms around her brother in a warm greeting. “I’ve missed you.”
“Just as I’ve missed you. How have you been?” The pair moved to sit down on the couch of Nikolai’s waiting room.
“I’ve been great. You’ll never believe who I met today.”
The prince laughed, “Who?”
“That Kaz Brekker of yours.” Y/N smiled widely at her brother’s disbelief. “Yes, I did. And for him being a gang leader, he had himself a very good set of manners. Though he didn’t talk much but I don’t blame him for that.”
Nikolai watched his sister with a knowing smile. He noticed the twinkle in her eye as she spoke about her latest encounter. “Was he handsome?”
“Oh, very handsome.” Y/N’s eyes widened as soon as the words slipped from her lips and gasped before covering her mouth with her hand.
The older of the two laughed, “I had a feeling. Just asking.”
“You had no right, Nik.”
“I had every right. You're my sister and I’m his employer… He just doesn’t know it yet.”
Y/N rolled her eyes, “Yes yes, I know. I’m going to bed now. Good night.” Nikolai smiled and wished her good night.
Once she reached her room she twirled around in her nightgown, smiling giddily to herself. She had never experienced a crush before and this new feeling fluttered through her chest excitedly. The unknown of it all was addicting and she loved it. Would she see him again? Is he still awake thinking of her just as she’s thinking of him? Did he have another girl back home waiting for him?
“Please don’t have somebody waiting on you.” She spoke aloud as if the Saints above will carry her message to him. Throwing herself back into her bed, she pulled the covers around her body. Her eyes grew heavy and a yawn slipped past her lips. She switched her light off and smiled into her pillow as her thoughts echoed his name. “I was enchanted to meet you.”

• Touch and Kaz Brekker •
Tumblr media
You knew what you signed up for when you fell in love with the bastard of the barrel. Touch was never going to come easy.
There are times where the mere thought of touch causes bile to rise up in Kaz's throat and makes him recede into himself. Turning into no more than a phantom to you, haunted by his past.
And then there are times where Kaz takes to touch with a curiosity that can only come from a boy in love. Where he yearns to experience the intimacies that come when two people are joined.
Such as when a breeze travels through one of the Slat's windows and inadvertently causes strands of hair to fall onto your forehead.
Kaz is caught off guard, wishing more than anything that he could tuck those stray strands behind your ear.
Or when he notices you dressed for the evening, perhaps in a dress. Your bare shoulders glinting in the candlelight.
Kaz practically aches to kiss your aflame skin.
Such as one eases into a tub filled with steaming water, it took caution and time to get Dirtyhands used to the concept of touch. To realize his fantasies could slowly but surely become a reality with you and you alone.
First, it started with you wearing one of his own gloves. The fabric like a second skin to him by now. So, when your gloved hand made contact with his chest, to feel his heartbeat, it was bearable.
You were more than happy to go at his speed, to cherish any crumbs of intimacy he was able to maintain.
And with his own gloves you could touch parts of his body.
But eventually Kaz wanted more. Needed more.
So, one day the gloves came off.
You had never seen Kaz's bare hands so clearly before. Pale and thin. Magician's fingers. And they were cold to the touch when he placed his hand in yours.
The skin to skin contact was enough to make Kaz feel the dark waters at his feet, ready to pull him under but he fought it. He fought it for you and because honestly, his desire was greater than his fear.
He held your hands with reverence, memorizing every line upon your palms until he worked his way upwards.
His fingers, light as air, ghosting over your collarbones, your jaw, the cupid's bow of your lips...
Oh, Kaz wanted to drown but he also wanted to continue, to push himself. He concentrated on how warm your skin felt.
Not cold or clammy like the bloated corpses he remembered. You were soft, your heartbeat thumping beneath his fingertips. So alive.
Kaz vowed to himself that he would get better for you. Brick by brick. So one day he could give you more than puny crumbs.
He wanted to kiss you. To feel you more than just a few measly caresses.
He would become a man for you. Not just a boy plagued by trauma. Hell, eventually Kaz would love nothing more than to pick you up in his arms and sweep you off your feet.
But, baby steps. One day at a time. Healing required patience and you had ample enough to give.
Though the first time Kaz pulled you in for a kiss you felt like your heart might stop.
The brush of his lips against yours gentle yet dripping with years of constrained passion.
The tide lapped at Kaz's feet, of course, yet the pull of you was a light amidst the dark sea in his mind.
Kaz thought, if he should die at this moment, he would die happy.
Your mouth against his burned him in the most blissful way and he knew he was instantly addicted.
He would fight any nightmare, he would wade against the coldest of water, if it meant one more kiss, one more touch from you.
And Kaz was nothing if not persistent in getting what he wanted.
So, he would conquer his fears for you. His love.

soulmate! kaz brekker x reader please! names on the wrist (kaz r not kaz b). reader is a childhood friend and is a grisha under contract of servitude (tailor). they meet secretly and one night kaz says he is going on a mission to fjerda and when he returns he will buy his contract. at the end of CK he actually does this and takes her to the slat and they have a hand holding/light kiss on the forehead moment where they finally say they accept each other as soulmateI love your work, darling! ♡
ty! and excellent request, man does soulmates!kaz always hit a little different
masterlist
Tumblr media
Soulmates were not meant for a place like this. Honestly, sometimes it seems more like some sort of cosmic accident, that of all the places to experience a meant to be, a soul universally joined to you and you alone, Ketterdam should not be it. Fjerda, now, that makes sense for soulmates. They already cling to enough traditions that magical superstition just makes sense. Even Ravka, Ravka the war-torn legend, that works.
But your home? Yours is a city of broken boys and lonely girls, blood running in the streets and skin worn too thin from all the times people pretended it was too thick. Kerch is not a country that prides itself on anything but profit. The Barrel, then– scum of the earth, forgotten by the Saints, blind to anything but greed– this is not a place that love lasts. Yet everyone here has a soulmate, the same as everyone else on every corner of the world. Make that make sense to anyone with a working brain.
Sometimes you almost think that the soulmates trend should have skipped over your city. Maybe that would be some sort of divine penance for all the wrongdoing your fellow citizens commit with glee. It would take a sign that big to convince anyone to lay down their guns and knives and try to even think about peace.
It doesn’t come, though, that divine intervention. Instead, you all have soulmates, and you all wager their lives like another round at Makker’s Wheel. You will go through your life trying to find the one person who makes you whole, and regardless of whether you find them or not, it will never be enough. The Barrel always wants more, and if it’s your city, then you do, too.
You don’t have far to look, though. Truth be told, you already found your soulmate quite a long time ago. That’s what you think, at least. In reality, your sainted aspirations are just that– dreams, hopes, an estimation that you made when you were young and have never dared to actually challenge or prove correct.
In your defense, it is almost impossible for you to tell for certain. Soulmates are identified one way and one way only:  a name written across your wrist in the print of your soulmate. You’ve stared at your own wrist enough to commit the inked black to memory:  Kaz Rietveld, scrawled in hurried print that still took the time to be solid and secure. There is no room for additional flourishes nor swooping script, just the name and nothing else.
That’s just like Kaz, too. Ruthless, determined Kaz. He runs through this life just like his name wraps around your veins. He’ll do what he pleases and take what he wants. If what he wants is for you to live the rest of your life in mystery, then, well, that’s just fine by him.
Maybe Kaz doesn’t know at all. The problem with the Kaz on your wrist versus the Kaz you know in real life is the issue of his last name. Kaz Brekker is the boy who runs the Barrel. Kaz Rietveld is the one who is damned to you forever. There is no guarantee that they are the same, but oh, how you wish they were.
You’ve known Kaz for half as long as you’ve known yourself. You met Kaz about a year or so after the flareup of the Queen’s Lady Plague. By then, he’d already started the process of breaking down his fragile pieces and rebuilding them back up to become Dirtyhands, the killer of this city.
You were newly arrived in Ketterdam, having the misfortune to walk into one of the gilded traps of the many pleasure houses of the West Stave. You weren’t indentured for your body, thank Ghezen, only for your hands. You’re a Tailor, one of the rare Grisha with a knack for changing the appearances of others rather than conjuring up swarms of fire or water.
You have a room in the House of the Blue Iris, and customers are sent up to you on the regular. They want darker hair, then lighter; bigger eyes, then smaller; shrinking skeletons and blooming skin. All this you can do with some effort, but it’s gotten easier over the years, your gift. It had to improve, of course. If it didn’t, your employers would start wanting you for other purposes, and that you would avoid more than anything.
As if you have a choice, though, when it really comes down to it. Your contract of servitude seems to stretch on until forever, and increases by the day. The Blue Iris uses every single excuse to lengthen your contract that they can. No matter how much money you earn, how many clients walk away happy, you’ll never be done. Not really.
Kaz met you when you were first roped into the Iris. He was scrounging around for someone to con, and first tried his tricks on you. It didn’t work, but instead of getting violent, he was just curious. Nobody saw through him like that, he said. That means he should try harder, you claimed.
It was as good as an insult to any self-respecting thief in the Barrel, which was why the two of you became immediate allies. Even after Kaz grew into Dirtyhands, broken-crowned king incarnate of this godless city and you stayed just you, still in that room in the Iris, he never let you go. Not really.
Some part of you wonders if it’s because he knew all along. See, you can never confirm whether or not he’s your soulmate because Kaz will never let anyone know at all. His gloves cover his wrists with a good few inches of black leather to spare, so there’s no chance of catching a glimpse of your name written there on his skin. He’s certainly never told you that you would ever be his soulmate.
Then again, it would be just like Kaz to keep it from you. He doesn’t like weaknesses, the Brekker boy, even when everyone claims to the stars and back that soulmates only help you find fulfillment in your life, not drag you away from it. Kaz likes being alone. His friends are exceptions, not proof, that he would ever conform to such a traitorous belief that he would need people in his life.
Likewise, he’ll never know for certain that you’re his soulmate unless you gave up the charade and asked him outright. Anyone with a decent bottle of concealer and smudgeproof black pen can pretend to be someone’s soulmate, and workers of the West Stave’s pleasure houses are often unfairly targeted in the hopes of gaining some free sessions. You’ve been tailoring your soulmate’s name off of your wrist for years now, longer than you’ve ever known Kaz.
Thus, the two of you are at an impossible stalemate. Neither of you will risk asking, because the cost of being wrong is far too high. Kaz would never surrender his guard long enough to include a soulmate in his life as more than a friend. You certainly have no space in your contract to include someone made for you. Neither of you can see the name of the other’s soulmate, so you’ll go on dancing around the issue for the rest of your lives.
It bothers you sometimes to think that Kaz would rather die than tell you. If he was your soulmate, then he’d have your full name there, first and last correct. Maybe the rumors are true and he never takes off his gloves even to speak, maybe his arms are so burned that the skin has melted away and he never saw the name in his life. Regardless of his innocence, true or not, he keeps his silence. You respect him enough to do the same.
Yet when Kaz shows up at your room in the middle of the night, you can’t shake the feeling that he knows something. He’s certainly nervous enough to indicate such a truth; he shifts from leg to leg, constantly moving as if he’s ready to run at any moment. Your clients are done for the present moment, and you were in the middle of trying to regain at least some energy for the next one. You love being a Grisha and using your gifts, but Saints, if it doesn’t kill you to be so drained day in and day out. Everyone wants more than you have, but if you let them down, the consequences are unthinkable.
Kaz knocks on your window; you know it’s him before you turn. Kaz has a way of making himself known, from anything to the distinctive sound of his cane accompanying his footsteps to the very pattern of his breathing from across the room. You’d know him anywhere, in death, in life, in hapless, never-ending purgatory.
You rise to unlock your window, but he lingers there still on the other side of the sash. Cocking one brow, you ask him why he hasn’t yet come in. “Last time I checked, you’ve never had a problem with invading my personal space. What’s changed?”
Kaz exhales sharply, but stays there on the fire escape, as if scared to give himself too much room. “I’m leaving. Tomorrow, early. No one can know.”
You frown. “Then why are you telling me? Anyone could be listening.”
Kaz seems to have reached that same conclusion several times before, but he stays regardless. “It’s a job. A good one. Thirty million kruge.”
You blow out a low breath. “Ghezen’s hand, that’s a lot of money. Still doesn’t explain why you’re breaking your typical pre-job oath of secrecy and telling me, though.”
Kaz makes an irritated sound in the back of his throat. “You’re infuriating.”
“Of course I am,” you smile, “that’s why you spend time with me, isn’t it?”
There’s a pause, and then Kaz continues. “I’ll buy your contract when we’re done.”
This you weren’t expecting. “What?” You gasp, almost thinking that you heard him wrong.
Kaz isn’t one to joke around on serious matters, though, and he repeats himself again. “I’ll buy your contract from the Blue Iris. Once we finish the job and we get our money. You can be one of my Dregs.” His expression softens, eyes growing wide with the slightest tint of disbelief. “That is, if you’d want to.”
You laugh quietly. “Kaz, it would be an honor to join your gang.”
Something almost like a smile touches his lips. “There’s no honor among thieves, Y/N.”
“With you, there would be,” you answer.
Kaz shakes his head. “I’m certainly not honorable. I would have thought all this time would have taught you that.”
You ponder that for a moment. “If you’re not honorable, why would you go to the trouble of buying me out?”
Kaz looks away, and has to all but drag his eyes back to you again. Even still, it seems to take everything in him to hold your gaze. “I am selfish, actually. Very. I’m doing this because– because–”
His voice breaks off, and it takes at least a minute for him to recover. When he speaks at last, the syllables are choked out with great force. “Is it true? The name on your wrist, is it mine?”
Your eyes widen. “Yes,” you say at last, although you hadn’t been expecting this. Part of you thought the two of you would avoid the soulmates topic forever. Maybe it would be better that way.
Kaz’s brow furrows. “Are you sure? The last name, it says Brekker?”
It’s a trick. You’d know it even if it weren’t for the fact that Brekker isn’t the name on your wrist, that Kaz has always needed to protect himself first and trust anyone second. His brow furrows the way it does when he tries to pull a con over someone. You’ve been with him long enough to learn his ticks, and you know them now by heart.
So, you shake your head and lay your heart bare. “No,” you whisper, “it says Kaz Rietveld.”
Hearing that name seems to shake Kaz to the core. “How did you know it was me?”
You chuckle. “There are only so many boys named Kaz in this city. I mean, there are thousands of Jacks and Toms and Asbjørns, but I’ve only met one Kaz. You.”
Kaz nods slowly, accepting this. “I’ve never told anyone Rietveld was my last name,” he murmurs, half to himself, “not even you.”
His eyes seem to fix on your wrist, so you will the Tailoring away, revealing his name inked on your wrist in his same spider-block font. Kaz nods once, accepting this, then pulls off one glove on his hand. He holds it close to his chest for a moment, daring himself to do this, then gives in and shows it to you. There, written so perfectly below his hand that you almost believe you had written it yourself that very moment:  Y/N L/N.
Kaz nods mechanically. “We can’t tell anyone, of course. My enemies would go mad if they knew. Still, maybe after this–”
His voice trails off, but you know what he meant. “Maybe we can explore what that means for us,” you reply softly.
Kaz’s head jerks up and down once in a marionette’s version of a nod. “We’ll see.”
A sound in the hall outside makes him startle, and he’s tugging the glove back on in a second. “Wait for me,” he says, then disappears down the fire escape again.
Your wrist is tailored over in a second, but that doesn’t stop your head from churning, your heart from pounding. After all this time, it’s true. Kaz is your soulmate, and you are his. What a world.
After that, waiting feels like agony. You hear about the disaster with the Ferolind in Ketterdam’s docks, but from the scant news you can pick up, Kaz and his crew managed to make it to the water without getting caught by rivals. All you can do is hope that they’ll manage to complete whatever impossible task waits for them during this job. Thirty million kruge is no small fee, to be sure. If it was so serious that Kaz would come to you first, even risk telling you about the job to know if you were his soulmate, the odds of dying must be high.
You know that rebellions to shake the world rarely come about quickly, but Saints, if you didn’t wish Fate would hurry itself up. You want to see Kaz again, you want to be sure that you weren’t imagining all of that moonlit conversation.
And, in time, he comes back. It takes longer than you expected. There was a terrible period of a week or two in which you knew he was back in town but he still wasn’t at your door. There were rumors that he had to take down a certain Jan van Eck as well as Pekka Rollins. Still, you refuse to give up hope, and your aspirations are rewarded.
Your employer knocks on your door, an angry sound. When you open the door, they hold up a contract, newly signed over to one Kaz Brekker. You’re told to gather your things in a far shorter period of time than anyone could ever manage, but you do so with great joy. For once, you’re living on your own terms, and it is fantastic.
Kaz is waiting for you in the streets outside. He seems changed somehow; a little older, a little more tired. Along with the stories of what he did to take down van Eck, you also heard that he lost a few friends along the way. You offer him a quiet smile, and he does his best to return it. Maybe in time, it will come easier. You can always hope. There is no cost to that.
Kaz saved a room in the Slat, the closest to his office other than his own. You place your bags in the corner and stand there, breathing in the smoky air. The Slat is creaking, half doused in rebel blood, utterly shameless and impractical. You love it to death already.
Kaz closes the door, then slowly walks over to you. An oil lamp burns overhead, giving his dark hair the appearance of a gentle golden halo. That might be the best joke you’ve seen yet. Kaz is no angel, to be sure, nothing near a Saint, but you think you quite like that about him.
He leans over slowly, carefully, and places a kiss on your forehead. It is so light you hardly feel it, but it seems to move both of you like a raging storm.
“Welcome home,” he says at last. For once, Dirtyhands is speaking the truth, and a kind truth at that. You think it might suit him.

beginnings- nikolai lantsov x reader
In another life, you might have found him handsome.
You might have been attracted to his golden hair and the arrogance that he carried with him, but it was hard to be attracted to him when your hands were locked and he had the key.
Besides, you don’t have room in your life for romantic machinations
“You know, I think what’s been throwing me off is that you’re too pretty to be a criminal.” He said towards you and Jesper and Kaz fell silent.
Oh you were never going to hear the end of this.
“We should see how pretty you think I am when I break your fingers.” You retorted, slowly and silently working on the lock mechanism.
“Promise?” He replied almost instantly and your fingers stopped working for a second, stumbling at his response. “Oh, that reminds me, Alina Starkov. She-”
You tuned him out as you undid the rest of your restraints, starting to plot your escape from here.
The window was likely your best and only option, with guards conversing outside of the door behind you three, and the Sturmhond blocking the door in front.
The pirate caught your attention once again by producing more Kruge than you had ever seen at once in his hand, setting it down on the table.
“Twenty seconds,” he nodded to Kaz, turning to leave before looking at you, catching your eye one last time. “You could always join my crew. Always looking for new talent.”
“Go to hell.” You shot back and a wide smile appeared on his face.
“Worth a shot.” He said while walking through the pair of double doors.
Both you and Kaz shot out of your seats, Kaz walking towards the Kruge and you towards the window, which luckily had a landing empty of guards.
“I can’t believe he was flirting with you. A little help?” Jesper said, half-annoyed and Kaz tossed a coin towards him. You rolled your eyes.
“What am I supposed to… when did you know? That I’m a Durast?” Jesper asked, his voice growing soft as he transformed the coin into a lock pick with nothing but his hands.
“In the train, when we were crossing the Fold, in the train. And besides, when you shoot, you never miss and no one is that good.”
“I don’t-”
“Neither of us are gonna out you, Jes.” You said, half-focused on the guards trying to break through the door.
“I appreciate it, but I’m more interested in hearing that from him.”
You turned to Kaz. His eyes never left Jesper.
“I’m not going to out you.”
Jesper gave Kaz a single nod, the handcuffs falling to his feet.
“Let’s go.” You said, one leg already out the window.
