Thanksgiving Goftagu!
Tumblr media
Much of the Persian half of my family enjoy celebrating Thanksgiving with my parents and sisters, and we were fortunate to have around 20 guests in our home a couple weeks ago. We made more food than anyone could possibly finish. In this way, our Persian cultural hospitality practices combined with the traditional American Thanksgiving, leading to an amazing rendition of the holiday. One particularly special guest who visited us was my old Farsi teacher, Layla, who is also a distant relative. My sisters, cousins, and I learned from Layla when we last visited Iran ten years ago. I hardly recognized her, but as soon as we began talking, the memories came flooding back to me. I enjoyed my goftogu with her. She was excited to hear I had continued learning Farsi in college, and she stepped into her old role as a teacher as she corrected my sentences every now and then. I asked her about her current living situation, as she recently immigrated to Toronto from Iran. She met her husband there, and he also joined us at Thanksgiving. She described how she was incredibly happy to be in Toronto as it simply was not safe to be in Iran as a woman who wanted to enjoy unrestricted life. I asked if she would ever return to visit Iran, and she explained that she sadly cannot as there is a large possibility that she would not be able to leave the country once she returned. She explained that an Iranian friend of hers living in Canada had her passport confiscated when she went back to visit family. I was also surprised to learn about a uniquely immigrant emotion of “Happy sad,” where Layla is very happy to be living in a new country that allows her the freedom to live the life she has always wanted, but she is sad that her friends and family back in Iran are not able to experience these same living conditions.

Fourth of July weekend in NYC, 1986: Quasimodo, BIG NAZO's founding mutha-fodder, stood atop a tenement building on Avenue B before heading out to do "non-human statue" performance art at lower Manhattan's Battery Park in a crowd of thousands hailing from many nations, backgrounds and walks of life. On the surface, everyone there seemed to be celebrating whatever level of independence and freedom they managed to achieve and exercise in their own lives. A few individuals heckled Quasi, who, with his huge nose, greenish brown skin, lack of resemblance to the real statue and irreverent mentioning of items for inclusion on the "huddled masses" list, may have seemed, to them, to be mocking the country. The overwhelming majority, however, seemed delighted by the irreverent and positive attitude of the weird puppet Lady Liberty variation they'd just encountered. The crowds lined up for photos and laughter. Quasi came away from the experience feeling like it had been a 'fun and sloppy family gathering' in which relatives no one knew they had suddenly all showed up at the same place to meet, greet, and eat, and, in personal and private ways, consider the possibilities of Democracy's promise. Excerpt from (the original) poem, "The New Colossus", by Emma Lazarus that can be found on the inner wall of the pedestal of the REAL Statue of Liberty: "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" #fourthofjuly #independenceday #statueofliberty #democracy #bignazolab #bignazo #quasimoto #nyc #alphabetcity #lowereastsidenyc #julyfourth #liberty #usa #america #civicduty #vote2020 #immigrantexperience #landofthefree #publicart #statue #newcolossus #ellisisland https://www.instagram.com/p/CCO_kZCHc2r/?igshid=1iox7wx7ht1hr

One of the most profound perspectives I have gained was the time I spent living in Hong Kong and traveling all over Asia. For the first time, as an American, I began to understand and experience directly what it truly feels like to be the “other” (though I have been the other in many aspect throughout my life). . In the end, even though I lived there but two years and never would have divined the outcome, Hong Kong is a place I dearly call “home.” And while I eventually lived a decent life there, it certainly was not a walled off and insulated “expat package” existence. It was, for who I was and am, genuine. . #Repost @onbeing ・・・ @poetrichardblanco’s work touches on the polarizing issue of immigration through the fullness of the human experience and the question: What is home? “Especially in our contemporary society, we’re all in exile. We all have immigrant experiences of some kind that weren’t happening, exactly, 100 years ago. You move from Miami to Seattle, you’re gonna have an immigrant experience,” he says. #onbeing #conversation #wisdom #immigrantexperience #richardblanco #poet #poetsofinstagram #humanity #society https://www.instagram.com/p/B5e8rCZjH4LG7V9641LdE0T7dWI0inTqpB_TKg0/?igshid=1j6unfn9gs7gu

Repost from @goodreadswithronna - Patti Kim’s middle grade novel, I'M OK, realistically depicts the imperfect lives of recent immigrants + middle schoolers. Ok Lee’s a likable but flawed character who comes up w/clever ways to help out financially after his father dies suddenly. . . . . . . #middlegradebooks #middlegradefiction #middlegrade #middlegradereads #asianamerican #immigrantexperience #kidlit #deathanddying #childrensbooks #childrenbookstagram #tweenreads #singlemom #poverty #recommendedbooks wp.me/p3X25n-8xy https://www.instagram.com/p/B0Pu6VRBY9f/?igshid=1bn02d4544b9k
