📚Interpreter of Maladies - Jhumpa Lahiri📚 I'll start with this - Jhumpa Lahiri is one of my favourite authors, and this was the first book of hers that I read. Interpreter of Maladies is a book comprised of nine short stories that are heavily drawn with South-Asian culture (as a desi girl, I loved that) and are about Indians and Indian Migrants in America struggling with their roots and the new world which was far from home. Every story was an experience to read, with consistent elements of Indian tradition and culture mixing with American culture. Marriage is the prevalent theme in most of the stories, along with longing, love, and homesickness. Character interactions were beautifully portrayed in each story. It is clear that even within short stories, Lahiri has mastered character depth and character development. Every character was unique and well-defined. You could identify with them, feel for them, and feel with them as the story went progressed. Some of the stories are feel-good, but some were just downright heart-breaking. I was satisfied with endings, but at the very same time I was left wishing for so much more. #books #bookstagram  #bookaddict  #booklover #booknerd  #bookholic  #bookish #booklover #bookworm #goodreads #bookrecommendations #booklover #bookobsessed  #bookreview #jhumpalahiri #interpreterofmaladies https://www.instagram.com/p/CjBQDp8NBqz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Book 19 of 2021. "I am not the only man to seek his fortune far from home, and certainly I am not the first. Still, there are times I am bewildered by each mile I have traveled, each meal I have eaten, each person I have known, each room in which I have slept. As ordinary as it all appears, there are times when it is beyond my imagination." This book. It's one that I freely recommend. I have re-read more times than I can keep track of. It's one that inspires me, moves me and takes my breath away. It's one that I will always come back to and find comfort in. Brilliant. Just brilliant. If you haven't read it, please do. Let these words into your life and soul. Let Lahiri's magic seep into your heart and mind. A million ✨ stars and then some. . . . #whimsybookworm2021reads #booksofinstagram #literaryfiction #literaturelover #literature #femmemarch #womenshistorymonth #readwomen #womenwhoread #bookreview #bookrecommendation #JhumpaLahiri #interpreterofmaladies #quotes #bibliophile #bookporn #shortstories #pulitzerprize (at West Bengal) https://www.instagram.com/p/CL7gPDnp9H5/?igshid=58klhxamzwtu

What I’ve Been Reading Lately...
Tumblr media
“Interpreter of Maladies”,   Jhumpa Lahiri
After having traveled so much in April, May, and June, now I’m playing catch up with my reading! Lahiri’s collection of stories, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 2000, is a striking portrayal of not only what it’s like to live between two cultures, but also how those cultures effect each person when they are interacting with the second. Her stories are inflected with love, shame, denial, pride, and all the other emotions that make us human, stirring compassion for immigrants and the struggles they face as well as giving the reader a glimpse into another country’s lives.

“Becoming Madame Mao”, Anchee Min
Because of my job (VIPKD!) I have become interested in Chinese history, and after reading Chang’s “Wild Swans”, wanted to read more about the infamous Madame Mao, who interests me far more than Mao himself (women always do). While Mao was obsessed with power and self preservation, Madame Mao, who I will call by her name--Jiang Chang--had to deal with trying to survive the titan she had married. She is a complicated figure; after Mao’s death, the majority of people blamed her for the Cultural Revolution, which led to the torture and death of thousands of artists, writers, teachers, and otherwise normal citizens. But the is unfair, mainly because Jiang Chang was, like I previously said, only trying to survive. Mao was whimsical and violent, one never knew if one was in his favor or out of it, and she was always trying to remain on his better side. Min’s novel presents the human side of Jiang Chang in a compassionate way, exploring both her character and her past as explanations for why she did what she did.

I was having a dreamy conversation with an old friend once. I told them that one day they’ll find repose. ( Sad-ish dreamy) And in as much as there might remain remnants of overgrown sadness, there will be a smile, albeit tired, but a smile with honesty they’d never before known. ⠀ ⠀ That phrase - remnants of overgrown sadness - stuck with me. As did Jhumpa, and her debut book, Pulitzer Prize winner - 2000 Interpreter of Maladies. ⠀ ⠀ She fills in silences you’ve always felt but have never known what to do with them. The voids that life’s happenings leave on you. Some small, others gaping. Some loud, others creep on you so stealthily you barely notice but with a presence so loud. A failing father projecting his fears to his children. The thin line between pain and guilt. A once happy family crumbling slowly into misery’s pits. Silent dinners, with the cutlery clinks doing the most talking. The ache of having to put up social media fronts when your insides are guttered down and all you want to do is tear yourself up. The contradictions and complexities of our daily lives. ⠀ ⠀ Jhumpa finds the language for it all, and weaves it into short, lyrical sentences that will break your heart. But it will hurt so good. So so good. And you’ll want her to do it again. And again. ⠀ ⠀ So obviously your next read will be the novel she wrote after that, The Namesake. ⠀ ⠀ *⠀ I listened to a couple of interviews on YouTube that she’s done and she describes the book as being about the immigrant experience, the giving and taking between generations and the feeling of being displaced. Which reminded me of my own living experience of being a tad distant from my roots, the complexities of belonging to different cities, or none at all, even. Of not belonging. Which is something I want to explore further. ⠀ *⠀ Also, fun fact! Got my copy from the inama bookstore outside Tuskys Beba Beba for only 100bob (1$) and it originally belonged to Emily Peña. Well, thanks Emily! And wouldn’t it be so great if Emily learnt of the whereabouts of her books new home? #writerscommunity #bibliophile #kenyanbibliophile #interpreterofmaladies #jhumpalahiri https://www.instagram.com/p/BsBc-AqA2L-/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1u8ypxwsvkdlx

"Interpreter of Maladies" by Jhumpa Lahiri
The “Interpreter of Maladies” talks more about the relationship of husband and wife. The characters as said were just force on their marriage, meaning, there is no love or feelings involved between the two. Mr. and Mrs. Das’ arranged marriage affects their children since it looks like they don’t care for them that much just like how real and responsible parents should. Like Mr. Kapasi’s marriage, it was just also an arranged marriage by his parents and he and his wife have nothing in common. Both characters lack in communication with their partners. This lead to misunderstanding and to not know their partners well. Mr. and Mrs. Das also lack communication with their children.      The symbols include the camera and the puffed rice. The camera represents Mr. Das inability to see the world clearly. He misses the reality around him because he is more focused on what he sees in his camera. Example is when he stopped the cab just so he can take a photograph of a starving peasant. He just stopped the cab to take a picture but didn’t bother to help the needy. While Mrs. Das’ puffed rice symbolizes her mistakes. Just like what she confessed to Mr. Kapasi that she cheated on her husband with his friend.         I would just like to reflect or relate the story to one of the common issue nowadays which is couples having an affair or being unfaithful and not having a good relationship with their partners. This cases lead to have a broken family that has really a big impact to children. Parents must think more of their children than their own happiness. They must think of the consequences first before they do the action. Well, if there is nothing they can do to save the marriage, then, they must communicate and explain to their children the reasons but they must not cheat. It is much better than cheating. But still, the best thing to do is to focus on their children and try to save the marriage which they promised to treasure. I know that the importance of marriage in our country differs from the others but, people must know it’s true value. We should marry the person whom we love, whom we love to be with forever and whom we know we can’t live without.

"In the end I bought a small carton of milk and a box of cornflakes. This was my first meal in America. I ate it at my desk. [...] In a week I had adjusted, more or less. I ate cornflakes and milk, morning and night, and bought some bananas for variety, slicing them into the bowl with the edge of my spoon." ~ #cornflakes #interpreterofmaladies #jhumpalahiri #foodinbooks #pulitzerprize https://www.instagram.com/p/B2B9e0xgltn/?igshid=1t6k5ziqeorjl
