#I’m so excited for the Circe Saga

In Keep Your Friends Close, from Epic, Odysseus has these lines, which have Got to be my favorite in the whole song.

“So much has changed, but I’m the same” and “Yes, I’m the same”

And I just think it’s so incredibly interesting that we see this mentality from him. This Insistence that he hasn’t changed even though we Obviously know he Has Changed. A line from the Same Song is,

“Everything’s changed since Polites”

Like?? Babe, you Have changed. The men you’re leading can see it, can feel it.

But it’s so amazing? That Jorge Rivera-Herrans added this, because the fact is that Odysseus Has changed because of the war, the journey, the cyclops, Polites.

Everything has changed, including him as a person. It’s as though he doesn’t believe he can go back to Penelope and his son if he’s a different person from when he originally left them. Which isn’t inherently true, but the fear of returning to them as a completely different person and not being accepted?? I feel it. It’s why he insists on this crazy idea that he’s the same person.

This musical is beautiful.

SO! Thoughts on the Circe Saga??

Oh boy, where to start! ＞︿＜

First of all, I freaking loved it! Circe's voice! HERMES! And the second part of There Are Other Ways! AAAAH! One thing that I absolutely loved about this saga is that all songs smoothly transition to the next scene, especially from "Done For" to "There Are Other Ways". Those two songs are meant to be one! It's amazing!

Hermes' song… What am I even supposed to say? I love it! I think my favorite part is when he reaches that high note on "manifest a ✨being✨ of your creation". It's like butter in my brain. And when he gets so giddy and says "and I call this root, holy moly" 😩

Done For. I DIDN'T KNOW THAT ODYSSEUS WOULD SUMMON A FREAKING CYCLOPS! What am I even supposed to do now huh?!! I have already animated the whole fight scene between Odysseus and Circe's monster. 😆 But either way, I loved that you could hear the anger in Circe's voice. That she obviously doesn't trust Odysseus and that he doesn't really have 100% good intentions toward her. And the delivery of "I’m not sure I follow". Ody has his stern tone, he knows exactly what Circe meant but doesn't really want to accept yet what situation he has stumbled upon.

I actually thought the song was just a tad bit too short, but because it transitions so smoothly to the next song, I didn't mind it so much.

And then we have There Are Other Ways....

That is the song that I was most excited about! I had so many theories on how Jay would depict the relationship of Odysseus and Circe, and I did mostly believe that those two wouldn't "do it". In the snippet for example, Circe was about to stab Ody. Like, if she did stab him, why the heck would she wanna still sleep with him afterwards???? And if Ody discovered the knife and prevented the stabbing, then the rest of the song would just be super awkward.... So when he refused her and started to sing about Penelope…. 😭

Then I really liked how the conflict ends with Odysseus being humble but also honest. He begs for mercy and explains his situation. Urg I imagine that his eyes are teary, realizing that he has been gone for 12 years. And that is what all it took! Circe isn't a smexy evil witch, she is a person who just has her guards up.

And the end with that song! When Circe turns Odysseus' men back.... It's epic and I really wanna do an animatic of it 😣

In conclusion.

Did I like The Circe Saga?

Yes.

oh gosh, you ask me an impossible question here. I’m not sure I can quite answer that, but I can tell you what I’m excited for in each individual saga!!

For instance, Hermes in Circe and honestly all of Underworld. Then I can’t wait for the unknown songs, the GOD GAMES. I CANT WAIT. And then get in the water, and Challenge!!!!

If I had to pick a saga though I think it might be Underworld too!!! Just cause ever single song makes me so excited so far! Despite it being the shortest saga!

Finished reading The Girl in the Tower today, which means it’s time to write and then pick up Jade War.

I finished a book for the first time in multiple years nearly a year ago now, (though it feels as though it’s been less than that). That book was The Wolf and the Woodsman, which has since rocketed up into my favorite books of all time. Since then I’ve read Circe, The Bear and the Nightingale, and Jade City, the first two of which I’d begun reading probably prior to the start of pandemic, or just into it. It feels so good to be reading and finishing books again though, especially when I can get through them in a few sittings.

So my count is at five now, which I’m proud of, and it’ll only continue to grow! Jade War is next, then I’ll finish the Winternight Trilogy, then the Green Bone Saga, and perhaps read Daughter of the Moon Goddess between them. And of course, Juniper and Thorn, which comes out in a few weeks (I’m vibrating with excitement for it).

Anyway this is all to say that I’m proud of myself and I love that I’m reading again 😭
