Noticed in the Troy Saga that the characterization of Polites and Eurylochus is intentionally almost opposite of each other. Gentle vs Strong. Neither of them are bad, theyâre just intentionally different from each other.
My favorite way Jay shows this difference in the characters before anything else is the way the other characters say their names.
Eurylochus is introduced with several strong voices layered on top of each other. You can hear and feel the authority and respect in how they say his name.
Polites on the other hand is only introduced with Odysseus saying his name, and he says it in a very gentle and fond way.
Itâs just so extremely interesting to casually listen to Epic repeatedly and still find small things like this that just show how much thought JRH has put into the whole thing.

Iâve realized something.. Odysseus uses the actions of Polyphemus, Circe, and Poseidon and twists them in ways to make them okay, or to justify taking those same actions himself.
Heâs saying, âIf these people can do monstrous actions without a second thought, does that mean itâs okay? And if itâs okay for them, then itâs okay for me.â
But, theyâre not people at all. Itâs in a monsters nature to be a monster. Itâs the Gods. of course they donât place value in mortal/human lives.
Odysseus. Hun. Youâre comparing Ants to Bears. Their actions arenât okay, but they do them without hesitation because they donât value human life. YOU. DO. You shouldnât follow their examples, please.

This. I wasnât sure how to word it, but this is it right here.
"All i hear are screams"
Because that's what he wants to hear. He's fine with people blaming him and yelling at him.
He doesn't want to hear Polites gently singing his motto. He doesn't want to hear his mom's soft voice saying how much she loves him.
He wants to be hated and punished, he doesn't want to hear that they believed in him until the end.
So all he chooses to hear are screams

Odysseus heard âYo I see a man next to your wife. Yeah heâs covered in blood and has killed a BUNCH of people.â And really went âWell I gotta make sure thatâs me. No one else can be that but me, Iâll make sure of it.â

âventured too farâ just feels like something a mother would say about her little kid.
Odysseus is his motherâs baby always and forever, he just ventured a little bit aways, surely heâll be back by his motherâs side soon. right where he should be. soon.

Odysseus singing âAll I hear are screamsâ immediately after his motherâs Verse, as if the screams of fallen soldiers and strangers are better than the soft voice of his Mother with the knowledge that she died waiting for him and he was too late.

Adding the fact that, we really didnât hear about Anticlea throughout the musical much. Even in the Ocean Saga when Ody is dreaming of Penelope and Telemachus we donât hear about his mom.
We hear Odysseus pleading with Pen&Tel that heâs still the same and hasnât changed, because heâs worried they wonât want him/wonât accept him if heâs changed too much.
With the context of his mother though⌠Sheâs his Mom. He wasnât pleading with her in the dreams because he knows in his heart that no matter how much heâs changed his mother would accept him back as soon as she laid her eyes on him.
Except now he wonât ever get that easy acceptance, because she died while he was away.
The fact that both Penelope and Anticlea were waiting for Odysseus, they sang with longing, waiting, no matter how long it would take before he came back home. Only one will ever see him return back home, and even then he is a changed man, heâs no longer the same-

âEven if youâre the last thing I see, Iâll be waitingâ
Voiced by Jayâs mom.. itâs the softest part of the whole musical, those were her last thoughts as she died, Odysseus hadnât seen her in 10 Years. Odysseus recognized her voice immediately. He Joins her in singing. Iâm devastated. Actually sobbing.
