I was teaching Ophelia’s death scene this week and one of my classes spontaneously giggled when she died (because they are 16 years old and emotionally immature) and I said, in a shocked voice, “it is NOT funny” and they all insisted that it was and so I let it go but then the next day I showed them some Ophelia art, made them think about how sinister it was that her death happens offstage but is still described in such detail for the viewer, which tells us she was WATCHED but not HELPED as she died, and then played a clip from Branagh’s Hamlet of Kate Winslet singing a mourning song for her father and when I tell you how satisfying it was to hear a total and complete hush fall over the room

Hey, I just wanted to thank you for your readthrough of Whipping Girl! You have a lot of excellent commentary on it, and although I've read the book many times myself and recommend it to all the other trans women I'm friends with, it rooted itself so deeply in my mind that I can't always tell when I'm drawing on Serano's argument. You've helped me to see the book in a new light.

thank you right back! It’s an incredible book and I’m learning a lot from it. It’s also a really good book to have productive disagreements with - I’m pretty skeptical of Serano’s conception of social constructions (or “the social” more broadly - basically, the social elements of gender) but that has more to do with the liberal framework of the book and her background as a biologist - every academic believes their field is the key to unlocking all other fields lol. I’m also sensitive to the fact that this is like a foundational text in trans theory and she has to deal with the biological essentialism embedded within virtually all discussions of gender, so i think reading her concessions to biology as charitably as possible is probably the best way to deal with those elements of the book

#asks #whipping girl #and also I’m just partial to butler’s argument that gender is all social #which I’m learning from posting about this that a lot of trans people disagree with lol #so that’s my own perspective. Which I think is more correct than biological conceptions of gender but that’s another discussion #I think it is the biggest limitation of Serano’s work but in a way that is like #ripe for exploration and further scholarship on #like it’s not a fatal flaw that gives you reason to dismiss the rest of the text #and given the hissy fits I’ve seen people throw over the concept of transmisogyny it makes me ultimately defensive and apologetic of #the work itself given how epistemically important it is as a concept and framework #anyway I’m rambling lol.
