There's something percolating in my head about how sometimes the scenarios and characters we relate to the most are the ones that don't explicitly identify what they're doing in the terms of how we relate to them. Sometimes there are even specific indications that it's not that thing and yet we can still find it there and find it powerful. Sometimes that can feel more affecting and intense than the better representation out there (and not necessarily just better in a purity culture sense).

And I do think it's important not to give credit where it's not actually due, and not to insist on this kind of stuff as a replacement for actual representation. But I also think it's important to ... idk, allow space for the fuzzier depictions that speak really powerfully to some of us.

(I know this is vague! As I said, it's percolating.)

i am just like you know luz is Thee main character right?? you know catradora was the whole plot of the show right??? no they’re not good because they’re representation that alone is not enough to make something a good ship (see: lumi/ty but also ch/oni) they’re good because they’re like. interesting and fleshed out characters. catradora and lu/mity and korrasami and bubbline aren’t showing up in the top 100 because they’re frequent side pairings in m/m fics like none of those fandoms have m/m ships that even compare in popularity. like not that this isn’t a larger problem of femslash ships (and like the preference for sanitized couples Is A Thing as well 100%) but like that is not what’s happening Here

How do you think the bees first kiss will go? Reunion or talk? We all know it’s gotta happen in 9 based on the buildup.

As much as the reunion is a great place for it in fan art and such I absolutely don’t want it to happen there (and it shouldn’t). Exact circumstances? Who knows, but it shouldn’t be until at least the midpoint of the volume.

Blake and Yang’s relationship has been in a bit of limbo since the end of volume 6. It’s not a bad thing! There were a lot of things going on and being able to just enjoy being close to each other was good for them. They’d been through so much and came out stronger for it. Given enough time it would blossom into a full blown romantic relationship (hell, they were basically dating already).

Because this is a story though, we needed a catalyst. Something had to happen to push them into a position where someone would make that first move. And something did: Blake watched Yang die. Even if she knows Yang’s alive now it’s a very harsh reminder that they don’t have all the time in the world. That any day could be their last.

Sure, they could act impulsively and immediately kiss and confess their love. But again, this is a story. We’ve been watching their relationship grow for nine volumes now and although we’re so close to that milestone (I don’t want to say finish line because verbally confessing and/or kissing is only the beginning of a romantic relationship) we don’t want to rush it. There’s still tension to draw out between Yang seemingly dying and that realization that if one of them doesn’t say/do something they might never get the chance. And in a narrative substantial moments like this fit better later in a season/volume because you get that time to finish that build up.

#I like to keep my thoughts on the exact scenario vague because I like the surprise lmao #minor tangent but my biggest thing is… #I don’t want it to feel like a box they’ve checked off #and when people insist that it’s being dragged out or baited or whatever #that’s often what they’re asking for #an arbitrary milestone they can check off for ‘good’ representation #I just need people to enjoy the journey #representation isn’t about what milestones get hit or how quickly a relationship gets there #it’s about the whole relationship #we don’t get great slowburn wlw like this that often #enjoy the slowburn! it’s part of that relationship #let me 🐝 your bmblb #y’all volume 9 could be here in just a couple of months 👀
