My best friend and I were talking about queer 80s music videos and especially British acts who shocked tender US sensibilities, so of course I had to bring up Queen's "I Want to Break Free" and my best friend went, oh yeah, Freddie looks fantastic in that one.
me: and Roger Taylor's schoolgirl outfit was certainly a look
best friend: his what
me: you don't remember?
best friend: NO
me: ...but you remember the sort of body surfing ballet part, yeah?
best friend: the what part? OKAY WE HAVE TO WATCH IT NOW
Afterwards, he was suitably impressed by Roger, but gave his opinion that 1984 Freddie was possibly at his best looking ever. I was like, actually my vote goes to Freddie in the "Who Wants To Live Forever" video from 1986, it's understated for him but he looks great. So then we watched that and now the best friend has decreed that we have to watch Highlander this weekend, lmao.
(Note: I'm a lesbian and my best friend is a straight man. We still have opinions on these matters :P)

In The Book, we always give the spotlight to the lines,
"'Can we get on?' said Crowley. 'Goodnight, miss. Get in, angel.' Ah. Well, that explained it. She had been perfectly safe after all."
But I think we miss out on the follow up to that line, a few pages later:
"[The book] was probably in the back of a car belonging to two consenting cycle repairmen."

Will is 100% not "immature".
Will has some deep trauma and didn’t get to fully be a child due to his abusive dad, being the target of bullies, getting lost in a parallel dimension and being hunted by a monster from that dimension, then being possessed by another monster from the hell dimension, then realizing he had some sort of weird psychic connection to the freaky smoke monster which was now a giant flesh monster trying to invade his dimension. Also y'know... the whole "being gay in 80s Indiana" thing isn't exactly an easy time.
Will copes with his trauma by wanting to do stuff he enjoyed with he was younger - to let himself be a kid again, since he wasn’t fully able to ever really BE a kid. This is pretty common among trauma survivors when they grow up - they let themselves enjoy childhood activities, now that they are in a safe place and are able to do so.
Will is clearly one of the most mature of the group - he’s very emotionally intelligent and empathetic, and is always trying to help his friends and family (talking Mike through his issues, worrying about Jonathan's hand when he's literally just woken up in the hospital, supporting El when she's giving her presentation). Playing D and D is his way of dealing with his trauma and reclaiming his childhood.

Do You prefer masculine or feminine tending people? or do you not have a preference at aall
I don't really take that into account, no. I seem to get approached by more men, though - maybe I give off a certain impression.

A little touch of Miles in the night
Do you think about this Michael Sheen post as often as I do?
Tumblr media
Cause...you can see what he meant here, right? Comparing Aziraphale (especially this Aziraphale, with this boa) to Miles Maitland. Comparing two Sheens with twenty years between them.
Tumblr media
And it's not just a boa. They are so...them. Gayer than a treeful of monkeys on nitrous oxide. Dramatic. Flamboyant. You can see this similarity in their energy in these particular moments.
And yet...is it all? Or there is something else?
Spoilers for "Bright Young Things" under the cut. tw:homophobia, just in case.
You remember what happened to Miles in the end of his storyline? To sweet, frivolous, charming Miles?
Tumblr media
The police got Miles' letters to his ex-lover. It was 1930s, and one piece of paper with love confessions inside could lead you to prison. So he had to leave for France to avoid arrest, without even really packing his things. And it's happened just before WW2, so his further fate in soon-to-be occupied France was...unclear, let's say that.
And you know what's happening to our angel here?
Tumblr media
He's so silly and happy. He's spending the night with a demon he just recently realized to be madly in love with. Crowley trusts him - as he showed in another round of their peculiar roleplay. He was able to be a terrible magician for one evening. This is a perfect evening, right? He's happy and is ready to share this happiness with the whole world.
There is knock in the door. In this second Aziraphale is beaming and shouts "Enter!".
The next second the door will be opened. Hell is gonna come into the dressing room. Hell that has evidence of an impossible, criminal connection. Hell, ready to trample not only over this second joy, not just this evening - but all past and possible future evenings too. Ready to destroy all of Crowley, and with him, all of Aziraphale.
All thanks to one piece of paper.
Tumblr media
……. It was good that Aziraphale knew that trick with the photograph, wasn't it? After all, he and Crowley have nowhere to run to within the confines of Earth - the jurisdiction of Heaven and Hell is somewhat wider than that of an English court.

"Many people, meeting Aziraphale for the first time, formed three impressions: that he was English, that he was intelligent, and that he was gayer than a treeful of monkeys on nitrous oxide."
Aziraphale is older than modern gay culture. it has to be at least considered that he alone was the inspiration for everything camp

Hi Neil!
First of all, thank you so, so much for both the book and the tv show of Good Omens, they both quickly became my comfort fandom and I always turn to Aziraphale and Crowley when I'm sad. I really love them and am eagerly waiting for the third season.
I wanted to ask you a book related question, probably people have already ask you before but I never found an explanation: when you and Terry wrote that people thought about Aziraphale as “gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide”, did you meant it as actually "gay" or as "always happy"? Because the paragraph immediately after says that this wasn't true because angels are sexless unless they make an effort, so I always thought he was seen as a gay man (also explains Shadwell using slurs against him), but it's true that "monkey on nitrous oxide" seems to refer as someone who's just always happy...
What's the right interpretation?
Thank you very much again!
No we meant gay as in homosexual. The "as a treeful of monkeys on nitrous oxide" is using the simile in a humorous way, acknowledging the double meaning of the word gay.
If you listen to the Radio 4 show Bleak Expectations, written by Mark Evans, you will find this humorous trope used frequently.

I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your Austen postings. It's hard to deal with all the heteronormativity in the fandom when I can't relate to it - "Who's the hottest Austen man?" I couldn't care less! - but then I feel guilty because hetero women are marginalized in media, too. There can be space for everyone, and I'm glad you provide some balance.
Oh, wow—thank you, anon! I really appreciate hearing this, honestly. Austen is both my main fandom over many years, and one of the most deeply alienating fandoms I've ever been in because of that intense heteronormativity. It's not about whether people in the fandom ship het or whatever (obviously my own OTP is a het juggernaut!), but there's this whole pervasive atmosphere that assumes Austen is for straight women and that straight women's romantic and/or sexual preferences define all perspectives on her work.
I don't want to understate the impact of misogyny on either straight women who love Austen (there are a lot of misogynistic stereotypes and assumptions around them) or on Austen's general reception in modern pop culture. There's no problem with straight women (and straight people of other genders too!) being in the fandom, but heteronormativity underpins so much of what goes on and what is assumed that it's this ... loud background noise that would be pretty intolerable if not for my handful of queer friends in the fandom.
Anyway, I'm really glad if my grey-ace lesbian Austen stan monologuing has made the fandom even a bit less alienating for some others than it has often been for me. And I appreciate you reaching out to tell me.
