Okay, breaking my principles hiatus again for another fanfic rant despite my profound frustration w/ Tumblr currently:
I have another post and conversation on DW about this, but while pretty much my entire dash has zero patience with the overtly contemptuous Hot Fanfic Takes, I do pretty often see takes on Fanfiction's Limitations As A Form that are phrased more gently and/or academically but which rely on the same assumptions and make the same mistakes.
IMO even the gentlest, and/or most earnest, and/or most eruditely theorized takes on fanfiction as a form still suffer from one basic problem: the formal argument does not work.
I have never once seen a take on fanfiction as a form that could provide a coherent formal definition of what fanfiction is and what it is not (formal as in "related to its form" not as in "proper" or "stuffy"). Every argument I have ever seen on the strengths/weaknesses of fanfiction as a form vs original fiction relies to some extent on this lack of clarity.
Hence the inevitable "what about Shakespeare/Ovid/Wide Sargasso Sea/modern takes on ancient religious narratives/retold fairy tales/adaptation/expanded universes/etc" responses. The assumptions and assertions about fanfiction as a form in these arguments pretty much always should apply to other things based on the defining formal qualities of fanfic in these arguments ("fanfiction is fundamentally X because it re-purposes pre-existing characters and stories rather than inventing new ones" "fanfiction is fundamentally Y because it's often serialized" etc).
Yet the framing of the argument virtually always makes it clear that the generalizations about fanfic are not being applied to Real Literature. Nor can this argument account for original fics produced within a fandom context such as AO3 that are basically indistinguishable from fanfic in every way apart from lacking a canon source.
At the end of the day, I do not think fanfic is "the way it is" because of any fundamental formal qualities—after all, it shares these qualities with vast swaths of other human literature and art over thousands of years that most people would never consider fanfic. My view is that an argument about fanfic based purely on form must also apply to "non-fanfic" works that share the formal qualities brought up in the argument (these arguments never actually apply their theories to anything other than fanfic, though).
Alternately, the formal argument could provide a definition of fanfic (a formal one, not one based on judgment of merit or morality) that excludes these other kinds of works and genres. In that case, the argument would actually apply only to fanfic (as defined). But I have never seen this happen, either.
So ultimately, I think the whole formal argument about fanfic is unsalvageably flawed in practice.
Realistically, fanfiction is not the way it is because of something fundamentally derived from writing characters/settings etc you didn't originate (or serialization as some new-fangled form, lmao). Fanfiction as a category is an intrinsically modern concept resulting largely from similarly modern concepts of intellectual property and auteurship (legally and culturally) that have been so extremely normalized in many English-language media spaces (at the least) that many people do not realize these concepts are context-dependent and not universal truths.
Fanfic does not look like it does (or exist as a discrete category at all) without specifically modern legal practices (and assumptions about law that may or may not be true, like with many authorial & corporate attempts to use the possibility of legal threats to dictate terms of engagement w/ media to fandom, the Marion Zimmer Bradley myth, etc).
Fanfic does not look like it does without the broader fandom cultures and trends around it. It does not look like it does without the massive popularity of various romance genres and some very popular SF/F. It does not look like it does without any number of other social and cultural forces that are also extremely modern in the grand scheme of things.
The formal argument is just so completely ahistorical and obliviously presentist in its assumptions about art and generally incoherent that, sure, it's nicer when people present it politely, but it's still wrong.

People who fall for the line about protecting children from "obscenity" are either utter morons or ignorant children themselves. They really take, as an obvious fact, that you can protect children from sexual abuse with a legal concept developed and in force when the age of consent was 10.

Would be interested in your thoughts on how fandom has changed. I have some ideas (beyond the scope of the recent post about “content” versus community) but t it does feel related at the same time.
Some preliminary thoughts…
I think "this thing is The Best" and "this thing is The Worst" as 2 sides of the same coin, and fandom now feels caught between these 2 extremes, maybe skewing negative. Fans have always complained / disliked their fandom source material but there does seem to be a certain hostility that I don't remember previously. A strange contradiction of anti-fandom fandom, where ppl can strongly dislike something but still engage w/ it fannishly. I think of, say, peak MCU fandom of writing about all the Avengers living together in Stark Tower, or the flurry of fic that happened after The Winter Soldier, and how different that feels from fandom culture now. There’s a lack of sincerity or earnestness in fandom now, maybe.
Fandom has become more of an open community… where everybody sees everybody else's opinions all the time. Theoretically this openness should discourage echo chambers but I find ppl still get entrenched w/in their little groups and then fight & argue with others just as much. Compare tumblr to LJ, where LJ you could have a small group of friends and just talk/write fic within that group and never have to bother w/ seeing other opinions or get involved w/ fanwank. And that the norms for fandom discussion seem to be based around dunking & trash-talking vs. good faith conversations.
Very subjective, but fanfic feels more generic now. Less stylistic creativity than there used to be, and that a lot of fics are written in a certain voice / style that gets bland when you see it over & over again. Shipping also feels like the main way of fandom engagement much more than it used to be. Obvs shipping has always been a thing in fandom but I swear there used to be more genfic, casefic, character studies, etc.
Last thing: the breakdown of the 4th wall between fandom & creators. That kind of audience awareness can, IMO, go on to warp both fandom and the source material, in that fandom can believe they get to tell creators to write they story they want to see, while creators can be reactionary, in the literal sense, with their storytelling, writing a story based on fandom attitudes instead of just... telling the story they want to (either positively, in trying to write to what they think fandom ‘wants,’ or negatively, in going against what the fandom ‘wants’).

Anti Reset Ep 5 Stray Thoughts
Last week, Chu Yi Ping decided to take Ever 9 to school with him and let him sit in his classes. We as the audience are aware of some of the specifics programmed into Ever 9 to play at submissive partner and caregiver, but I’m not sure Chu Yi Ping is dialed into this. He decided to make out with Ever 9, and I remain skeptical about this show’s handling of Ever 9’s potential personhood.
Chapter 5: Wanting to Stay with You
So it looks like we’re maybe grappling with the temporary nature of Ever 9’s existence if he requires some sort of major reset.
Feels like the show is missing its own point a bit by making the angst about Ever 9’s existence something that is Yi Ping grapples with as to whether he’ll be alone.
Seems like the uncle and his team have not considered people with these sort of emotional needs becoming attached to their Ever 9 units.
Man, I’m not sure about programming a fear response to thunderstorms into the unit as a means of generating empathy in users.
Oh, we’re back to thinking of Ever 9 in the context of a pet that’s no longer here.
Programming the unit to fear being returned also makes me wonder about the intended use cases for this product.
Eh? I don’t know. I think I’m going to put Stray Thoughts on hold for this project and return at the end with ordered thoughts on what it actually did. I don’t want to fanwank this show into something that it isn’t, and right now I’m feeling like I’m just writing ambivalent comments.

about that “leaked scrapped hxh ending,” that, correct me if i’m wrong, we do not have a confirmed source for yet, hesitantly, i wanna say there are a lot of things about it that really scream made up fanwank of the shonen fan variety to me— like, it’s the kind of ending a shonen fan would make up, not something togashi would write. it’s very generic and it doesn’t really have anything to do with the characters as we know them. i think what set my alarm bells ringing too is the mention and role of noko.
noko is a named character who comes up on whale island a single time when gon is talking to killua; he tells him he’s never had a friend because the only other kid on whale island is a girl named noko who he didn’t get along with. this is the only mention of this character, ever; she never comes up again.
you might think this makes the ending sound more credible but i have been in this fandom long enough to know that noko ending up as gon’s wife in the future has been a fan theory in the more dudebro side of the fandom for years.
but from knowing togashi’s writing style and from the context i think he only gave noko a name in that scene to give detail and realism to gon’s dialogue. i don’t think noko is a real character who like. exists in togashi’s mind for later.
so basically this ending is sort of a souped up version of what has been a known fan theory ending for years. and it’s a fan theory that rings kind of nonsensical as an ending.
i’ve been wrong before, certainly. what makes me think it’s possible this is a real togashi statement is the fact that he specifically says this ending was scrapped and he would never go with it today.
i don’t think togashi would ever tell anyone the ending of hxh before he published it, i think that’s what i find hardest to believe. if he dies before finishing it, i do believe he’ll go to his grave with that shit.
who knows though.

Round 1 Poll 54: Not at Face Value
Persona submission 1:
Kuon Ichinose is a sociopath. She's not. She describes herself as heartless in a sequence that beats you over the head with a sign that screams ""DO NOT TAKE HER WORDS AT FACE VALUE."" She spent her whole life being viewed as an unfeeling doll because she didn't express emotions ""normally"" and internalized that, but it is very clear from her behavior in the scene itself that she *does* feel and *is* hurt by how she was treated, and it is framed as the epiphany it is when Sophia explicitly tells her she is not, in fact, heartless as she claims. And like maybe it's because I'm a low-empathy autist myself, but something deeply pings my bullshit detector when people blindly accept that ""lolol actually she *is* an unfeeling robot who doesn't care about other people"" against all reading comprehension. The fucking wiki is guilty of this and I despise it.
Persona submission 2:
Certain people insist on taking Akechi's ""I'm going to be entirely honest with you; I hate you"" line entirely at face value, but the text is pretty clear that it's...not a *lie* but definitely more complicated than that. If you pay attention to the rest of his words in the scene, it's pretty clearly coming from a place of envy, that despite having also suffered Ren is more socially fulfilled, stronger in the Metaworld largely as a consequence of that, and generally able to outpace him all without having sacrificed his morality. He admires Ren, and that makes him hyperaware and frustrated with his own perceived inadequacies, which he externalizes because he would implode if he tried to properly process it. Which isn't healthy, no, he needs all the therapy lmao, but all the same it's simply false to claim there is no positive affection at all in his heart. Yes I know that sounds like fanwank if you're not already in the hole but his next rank after, Morgana outright tells him ""you don't actually hate Joker, do you?"" (lit: ""you care about Joker, don't you?"") in a scene where the PTs are largely treated as knowing what they're talking about so actually I'm pretty confident it's the intended reading.

sometimes you have to admit your favorite characters wouldn't be as online as you are, in fact sometimes they're downright normie
they wouldn't know what a tumblr is, they use instagram and facebook to post pictures of them with their family, they go watch mcu and disney in 2020s and think it's still good and is just entirely unaware of the lawsuits and fanwanks involved
they show you an article talking about dracula daily a year after it's done and goes "wow! kinda unique, isn't it?" they listen to mother mother the first time and politely says "that sounds unique" when they actually think the vocal sounds super weird and unpleasant
they know attack on titan from a youtube advertisement or something and nothing else about it, they think only kids aged 15 and under play minecraft
sometimes your fave would not share even one single interest with you and thinks you're weird for shipping... ah shit, pretty much shipping in general. "oh you... write pictures of anime boys kissing? fanfiction? that's nice. maybe you can make money with this."

After I write that new IDW Optimus meta, the next one is gonna be a post of "why I really hate that theory about Rodimus being a better Prime than Optimus and how it doesn't even match the themes of IDW OR canon fact about how the Matrix functions."
But the TLDR that I feel like encapsulates where a lot of this fanwank comes from, is that I feel like ppl don't properly appreciate that the context of Optimus and Rodimus' leaderships are extremely different.
Like, Rodimus only led a ship of about 200+ people. This means that the scale of his leadership responsibilities and the risks/consequences/stakes of his actions as leader were much smaller in scale. However, it also means that just because he only led one ship of people doesn't mean that his choices weren't important/weren't indicative of his personal character (that is to say, just bc it was only one ship doesn't mean that it had no meaning or significance at all).
On the other hand, Optimus led an entire freaking army over a 4 million year war that arose from political tensions that began even before he/most of the people in the war were born. That means that the consequences of his leadership had extremely far reaching consequences no matter what he did, which grants him a large degree of culpability/blame for his actions. HOWEVER, it must also be said that under the pressure of fighting an impossible war, just because OP wasn't able to "stop it sooner" doesn't mean that he was a morally bad/incompetent leader, because a whole galactic war is such a huge burden that one person can't possibly stop it or influence/control everything to make the most morally correct and peace-causing decisions.
TLDR can we please stop pitting Optimus and Rodimus against each other when the contexts of them being leaders was so vastly different (and they had such different leadership styles in general) that you can't really say "who's the better leader" without minimizing either of their accomplishments/magnifying their respective flaws.
Also, canonically speaking the Matrix can be wielded by anyone who's confident/at peace/self-righteous enough to believe they're worthy of it, which was shown not only by the ending of LL where a bunch of regular ass crewmates were able to use copies of the Matrix, but by the fact that the first Prime/ruler of Cybertron Nova Prime was a massive piece of shit who colonized people, yet was still a Matrix bearer who wielded the true/original Matrix.
And also Primus is literally Just Some Guy and not some omnipotent god who's an objective arbiter of morality that can point at a guy and go "YOU are the Specialest Boy Ever and are Divinely Mandated To Be A Good person"
So the entire premise of why ppl even make theories and debate about this is beyond me lol. In IDW1 the Matrix is more of a social/cultural symbol than it is an actual measurer of morality, which is in line with IDW1's consistent themes of challenging the inherent rightness of authority

Hiya Wench! <3
It's me, the chick who always wants you to explain things xD. I have another polite request (won't be upset if you decline, but I have to try).
I had an epiphany about my posts today - I tag for other people, not myself (twitter influence). And I realized I don't even know how to quickly get to some of the older posts.
And then I remembered your page and how it's all neatly organized xD I previously haven't realized all your tags were actually separating your posts into categories and such... I love it. I had some big brain moments today xD
Would you please have any quick tips (perhaps you already do have them on your blog, I just forgot how to display the blog with the template on) for how to get started with your own template and neatly organized posts you can always find? Maybe even some template creators and such?
I used to do HTML & CSS back in the day, but it's been a long while, I don't have that much time to do trial and error anymore, and any actual coding is out of the question for me. It's gotta be user-friendly. (Free would be best, but I'm ready to reward the work done.)
I'm loving it here now and I post A LOT... I'd hate to reach a point where I don't even know what's on my page anymore.
Thanks! <3
Hi, bb! 💙
I've been asked about this a few times, and I honestly never feel I have a good answer for it, haha. I just like organizing and categorizing things, honestly. Best I can do is share my thought process and a couple of handy tools--Hopefully that'll help give you some inspiration!
My tagging habits actually come from ancient Tumblr functionality--Back in the day, the search function didn't exist as it does now (in which it will (theoretically) scan the body and tags in the post), and you could only find posts if they were tagged in a certain way. Sometimes I wanted to post about game stuff, like Dragon Age, but I didn't want my post to appear in the main tag (because of fanwank hell) BUT I also still wanted to be able to find it later because my blog is for me first and foremost.
So I started using "s: dragon age" to gather all things related to Dragon Age (in which "s" in my mind stands for "series") and "g: dao" for posts specifically about Dragon Age Origins, "g: da2" for Dragon Age II/2, and "g: dai" for Dragon Age Inquisition. And if it was a post I did want to go into the main tags, like a GIF set or fanart, I'd use both the default tags (Dragon Age, Dragon Age Inquisition) and my personal ones for my own blog cataloging.
Tumblr search hasn't worked like this in years, but by the time it changed, I was already in this habit for a while so I've just kept doing it. I do change the way I organize stuff from time to time, and there are some tools that make that easier:
Xkit Rewritten This is a life-changer and has a ton of great features to improve your Tumblring experience, but the "Tag Replacer" specifically is awesome if you realize you want to change a tag en mass.
Tumblr Tag List Generator And this is really helpful if you need to do some tag wrangling and figure out what tags you've used. I periodically run my blog through this to catch inevitable typos in tags so I can change them, and see if I can consolidate any similar tags (e.g. catch if I was using both "g: da2" and "g: da ii" so I could figure out which one I liked more.)
As far as the organization itself and how I choose the categories, it's just vibes, haha. It's just how I catalog things in my brain. Which I know is probably unhelpful. Prefixes like "inspo: ###" and "shows: ###" are pretty self-explanatory. "extras: ###" is for the random stuff that doesn't really fit anywhere else, like shitposts and cute animal pics. "topic: ###" is for more serious subjects and discussions, like LGBTQ+ issues. "mine: ###" is for the stuff I've made.
Two things I wish I had done a better job of is 1) organizing other people's OCs by fandom (if you visit me on Pillowfort, you'll notice I use tags like "other's ocs (cp77)" instead of just "other's ocs") and 2) separating my edits tag into a gifs and virtual photography tag. Calling all video game imagery "edits" is also sort of a holdover from Tumblr days of yore, but I wish I had made a distinction there. (I had never even heard the term "virtual photography" until about 2022, though, and I've been on Tumblr since 2010 so yanno. Whatever. This blog in particular is 8 years old, and I'm not sifting through thousands of posts just to amend that.)
And this is a mostly comprehensive list of all the tags I use, if you wanna see the categories and whatnot in action.
With regards to blog templates, I've actually decided to stop focusing on that here because Tumblr has increasingly become a more app-driven userbase, and the pretty blog templates are only visible on desktop. Tumblr also nuked a lot of functionality of the custom pages you can make, which is where I used to keep my tags displayed. I still have a custom theme, but it's pretty bare-bones compared to what I used to do. (Now I get my CSS fix working on my Neocities website, although that is very much still a WIP.)
But there are fortunately still a lot of folks keeping the custom Tumblr themes alive! You can browse some of my personal favorites under my tumblr: themes tag, and @theme-hunter is a fantastic resource to find free user-made templates.
Oh, and because Tumblr is pushing more for a generic and uniform app experience, you do have to opt-in to activate your custom blog. It's this option under your blog settings:
Tumblr media
And if you want to view someone's custom blog (if they have one), you'll have use the https://fereldanwench.tumblr.com/ URL. If you want to view the dashboard-like version of their blog, you'll have to use the https://www.tumblr.com/fereldanwench URL.
Hopefully this made sense and can give you some ideas to get started!

Sometimes I entertain myself by mentally categorizing tiers of headcanon. It has nothing to do with quality, just:
1- Wait, This is Headcanon?
The source material doesn't explicitly say that the headcanon is true, but it really strongly implies it, to the point that a lot of people don't even realize it's not explicit canon. I'm not talking ships so much as just really obvious details that aren't quite spelled out.
2- Interpretative Headcanon
The headcanon is based on something in the source material, and it's a valid interpretation, but there are a lot of ways to interpret the thing in the source, and it could easily and justifiably be read quite differently. This is also often mistaken for explicit canon.
3- Borderline Headcanon
The headcanon is spun off from something in the source material and doesn't contradict anything in it, but the basis is ephemeral enough that it's mostly something you/someone else/the fandom made up and ran with.
4- Classic Headcanon
The headcanon is not directly based on canon details. It's made up to fill those fun blank spaces in canons, and to connect things we do know. So it works with what's established in canon and can lead to really fun and interesting spins on canon, but it definitely leans more towards invention.
5- This Headcanon Has Creaky Floorboards
The headcanon is not only stuff you/I/fandom made up to go with canon details, it can actually be fairly difficult to reconcile with those details. It's technically possible to make them fit if you squint and interpret in some specific and improbable ways, but it's an obvious stretch. (This sounds negative, but sometimes canon details suck.)
6- HeadCANNON
Creaky? LOL. This headcanon definitely cannot be reconciled to its source material and does not wish to be. It gives no fucks about canon except insofar as these headcanons often go out of their way to defy the canon details of the source and blast holes straight through its structure.

I'm usually kinda closed book about this because it's really no one's business but mine but here's how I use tumblr follow /block:
Blocking is for one of: has a view I find reprehensible (classic block), dies on hills I find incredibly annoying, I'm on a DNI category of theirs.
Following is for mutual interests. If I like a blog's content, I follow.
Unfollowing is for losing interest or the blog has started to post drama I don't care about.
Unfollowed but still visit the blog means I like the blog content but sometimes I find it overwhelming or not to my tastes.
A mutual is not a friend, but can be. If we have been mutuals a long time I probably think of you fondly.
"awesome mutuals" tag is for friends and friend content
A blog that goes in and out of being followed means I probably like your content but occasionally need a break from the discourse. This is really a category that's only been relevant in wrestling fandom, which has a culture of lots of flashpoint drama that I don't really care about. Basically if I generally like a blog but don't want to hear about the stupid shoot drama or fanwank de jour, I may unfollow and refollow.

Who is this? Hi, I’m TTC
I write Nemesis and Jill boning a lot. For the plot, supposedly. Been doing so forever ago. Also! This is an 18+ blog. Pretty much anything under the Ao3 archive warnings section, and then some can and will likely be represented here, so no histrionics, plz. We team SALS/DLDR/YKINMKBYKIOK in these parts Also, the murderkink. Gotta have the murderkink and worms. + What other names have you've gone by? I've lovingly been called That Tentacle and Server Satan. I'm a walking kink-filled perv factory full of bad ideas, hence the names. + Fic list for the Devil's Saga AU. The Ships in the AU
Tags: #thetentaclecommander writhes and speaks - for not fic statements/wank #thetentaclecommander writes stuff - for fic writing posts #TTC fic progress notes - fic progress reports like outlines an such #thetentaclecommander just posting bullshit - pure shitposting #thetentaclecommander does an ask - ask box stuff (prev ask prompts) #Fanfic Terrorist - Rent Lowering Shots (I don't play, I indeed embody 'Be Gay and Do Crime' fanfic edition) +
Why is...this? Because I want to see more Nemesis/Jill content, and it’s a bitch to find. Also, after years of putting off even joining Tumblr, I wanna share my AU and keep this crack ship alive. Maybe even fanwank on my thoughts about Toll and Onery or even on Jill, the long-suffering bad bitch that Cap keeps forgetting has a compelling storyline right there. But this is mostly just blatant shilling of my AU + What are you? An immortal sentient tentacle who moonlights as a jaded fandom old. I can and will out-drink you. + What’s your fandoms? Resident Evil. To be clear, I mainly stan RE3: Nemesis, not the remake one. The 1999 one. But in general, I like this goofy series, boulders, nonsense science, bad plot, and all. I do like other stuff that I might occasionally reblog. Could be silly shit like Helluva Boss/Hazbin Hotel or Arcane to heavy shit like BTD. I'm random like that. + Format of each post: A snippet, a link to Ao3. I’ll list any pertinent CWs if needed. My fics tend to be 18+ some of them marked with Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings and DD:DNE (ie unapologetically dark shit cause RE is a survival horror franchise), so keep that in mind. I might drop early snips; I haven’t decided on that yet. + Is Nemmy -ever- nice in your fics? Pffft (well, he’s 'nice' in bursts, as in a burst of tentacles through Brad’s face). In seriousness, in my take on him, he’s complicated, having the ability to be kind, and caring but is a Tyrant through and through - basically closer to canon. I like canonical villains and I like my monsters monstrous and, at times, barely grasping that human/monster line. Expect infestations and murder. + What is your stance on shipping? It's stupid. Be freely stupid with your ships; none of it’s real. Fandom is stupid, don’t take it so serious. + Is this…"""moral"""? I love me a “problematic” story with morally complicated characters you may not like (or do???), so the tentacle ride isn't that nice here. + But but but what are your fandom morality opinions, we need to know your opinions so as to judge you!!?1! 1. I am not your mom, dad, or priest, so don’t expect me to write fics with life lessons for you 2. Glory to the back button/Curate your experience like an adult 3. og Nemesis was hotter and scarier. 3make massacred my boy (I don't judge those that like 3make, but maaan my boi T.T) + Don't Whine, You Know What I'm About To restate so yall can't say you weren't thrice warned: if you fear sex that ranges from soft to oh gods please don’t kill me -urk-, have the ick towards tentacle murder or tentacles in general, hate high/low brow story drama (think Gothic Horror-esque), are really nitpicky about canon/will have a conniption over crack ships, are scared that reading fictional people doing fictional things will ‘make’ you do x thing, love the -isms and/or -phobias against others, sex negative (I'm openly kinky on and offline bruh), are an exclusionist of any kind or just basically are a killjoy puritan, you’ll -not- have a fun time with my content. I ain't reading your 'dni' or that stupid carrd, just block if ya hate it here. Also, this shouldn't have to be said, but kiddos (under 18), this means you, too. Be not seen or heard as per ye old adult fandom rules. + Do you do fic requests? RPs? No. I simply don’t have the focus/time to do requests or things outside of my stories. I write what I want when I want. + Do you do DMs or Asks? I just flit in the night and talk when I feel like it. I prefer all convos in the broad daylight on public posts. But I’ll open my Asks. Be stupid, and I’ll simply close them. Capisce? Also if you DM me wastes of time things like 'Hi', 'hello' - the kinda shit ppl mock on dating sites especially with a pretty much blank profile, you'll be blocked. In fact, I block pretty freely as I value my time. A'ight, Enjoy!

Song Review: Sweden
Queen Loreen is back, but will she replicate Euphoria’s success?
Loreen - Tattoo
Personal opinion: Wow, this has a lovely intro. I’ve already said the same about multiple songs, right? Anyway, with the risk of sounding basic and mainstream, I’m going to come forward and says it’s among the best packages of the year. It has power, it has drama, it has emotion and vulnerability, Loreen is a great vocalist and performed, and her Melfest performance is simply mesmerizing. The short orchestral part? Perfection! Yeah, the lyrics aren’t anything groundbreaking with the rain/pain rhyme and the tattoo metaphor which Jordin Sparks already did back in 2007. But it doesn’t take away from the song’s overall power. (Also, as someone who writes lyrics for my own enjoyment... it’s harder than what it seems like.)
Anyway. I’m going along with the fanwank and will most likely have the song in my top ten, unless the remaining countries surprise us.
Prediction: Yeah, this will win, but not necessarily with the televote. The jury is very likely to put Loreen first, but when it comes to what applies to the general public, I can see Finland and Moldova (maybe also Austria with a good performance) among the strongest candidates. I wouldn’t even close off the possibility of Loreen pulling a Duncan and winning neither the jury nor the tele, but still taking the whole thing home because she’s the only one in both groups’ top three. That could be a bit more exciting, and also a more likely scenario since the juries and televoters haven’t agreed on the winner since 2017? But we’ll see.
Thoughts on selection: I enjoyed the Melodifestivalen final, the Swedes know how to put on a good show. Many of the songs have ended up in my personal playlist. That being said, I do have an issue with how formulaic and predictable the selection has become. It seems that the final had, once again, your usual combination of sleek and polished pop songs, some Swedish-language schlager to appeal to older viewers, fun and colourful performances to appeal to the kids, and then the big favourite whose victory is already clear before a single vote is announced. The rock band Smash Into Pieces did bring something a bit different to the show, but Melfest could really afford taking more risks and broadening their horizons. Who knows, they could achieve success with something that isn’t made in a songwriting camp with their usual writers.

@arkhamarchitecture replied to your post “Wow people are being so weird about the fact that...”:
LMAO Vax/eth got some SEVERE fucking reactions out of a LOT of people for a variety of reasons. Vax/eth was VERY unpopular at first, both because of the rampant biphobia and also because of the weird segment of the fanbase that hated Keyleth Perc/ahlia discourse mainly came out of people who disliked Percy overall, which was easy to ignore because obviously if you don't like one half of the ship, why would you like the ship itself?
imagine hating percival de blorbo. couldnt be me i didnt graduate from clown university
but yeah, while i don't think it's healthy to steep yourself in fanwank, my general view is that it's not a bad idea to familiarize yourself with a particular fandom's history before shooting your mouth off. it's not especially old news, either; plenty of posts complaining about these ships are still readily available. i mean i also get it because people who claim these things are often like 18, and 18 year olds are afflicted with the unbearable agony of being 18 (and i also think that fandom olds shouldn't project fanwank onto people who just genuinely don't know the situation), but people who hated vax/eth in particular weren't exactly quiet about it, and the keyleth hate has been used to justify a near-cultish fawning over marisha's characters for like five years now.
