Wolfsong & the rest of the Green Creek Series by TJ Klune. Addictive, heart wrenching, fantastic. MM, adult, coming of age gay romances with high drama and romantic tension. If you want to read about werewolves, this is the gold standard. I'm in love with Klune's writing style. LGBTQA+ rep -- book three features an ace romance!!!

Cold Hearted by Heather Guerre (Tooth and Claw #1). @matsuoclan has the BEST book recommendations, oh my god. Grace moves to a remote town in Alaska to escape her past, and finds a new family, and more besides. Explores the themes of loneliness and depression with a supernatural twist, with a sprinkle of enemies to lovers. Love this book, will devour the series >:3

Ruby and the Wolf by Clover Down. @dominimoonbeam remains one of my favourite PNR writers. After putting her life on the line for a stranger, Ruby finds herself on the run from vampires with the wolf she saved. SO STEAMY. SO GOOD.

Mating the Huntress by Talia Hibbert. A werewolf falls head over heels for a hunter. SO GOOD. SO FUN. READ IT.

The Lone Wolf's Rejected Mate by Cate C Wells. Another book rec from a moot that I devoured. Wells is a guilty pleasure, and this is my favourite of this series. Deals with trauma, mind the content warnings, Darragh has my heart.

@monstersandmaw - Gabe and Odessa, complete, full novel. I cannot tell you how many times I've read this story. It's a comfort read okay. Slow burn. Odessa, lawyer, escaping the city, moves into a small cabin in the woods and meets Gabe, a park ranger, with more to him than it seems. Just a beautiful story.

@snowkissedmonsters - Candy and the wolves. Explores poly dynamics between a wolfpack and the human waitress Candy who is their mate. Gorgeous art to accompany it too!

I have made quite clear how much I adore Jason Peter Todd, despite how frequently he is written terribly. RHATO is Not Good, but pre-Flashpoint was...chaotic for his characterization to say the least.

HOWEVER!

I wish to give my fellow Jaybird lovers some stable ground if they’re looking for decent and consistent Red Hood characterization post-resurrection.

[Fuck you Battle For the Cowl that was a shitshow]

Most people cite the Under the Hood storyline as the best work about Jason. That story was written by Judd Winick. So, here’s a list of stories involving The Boy written by Judd Winick, with short summaries so you know what you’re getting into! And some images because I can’t not.

Batman Vol 1 629: This is not actually Jason, but a Scarecrow hallucination Bruce has, but it still characterizes both Bruce and Tim’s thoughts about Jason and his potential return. It takes place pretty smack-dab between Hush and Under the Hood.

I appreciate the Hush outfit with the white streak. Excellent.

Batman Vol 1 635-641 aka Under the Hood Vol 1 Batman Vol 1 645-650 and Annual 25 aka Under the Hood Vol 2 No description necessary; if you know Jason, you know how this goes.

Green Arrow Vol 3 69-72: Red Hood comes to Star City and decides to have a talk with current Speedy, Green Arrow’s sidekick, Mia Dearden.

For my fellow Harper family lovers, 45 has a lot of cute Roy and Lian too, including this part that rips my heart out.

Batman and Robin (2009) Vol 1 23-25: Red Hood reluctantly teams up with Dickie-Batman and Brat Wonder Robin to save his kidnapped former sidekick, Scarlet.

Please excuse some of the art bullshit; yes, it has ginger Jason, and yes the covers use the dumb pill helmet design. But for the record, he doesn’t actually wear the pill helmet thank fuck, and the hair thing was more for continuity. They were established during Grant Morrison’s run as writer because they don’t do their goddamn homework enough to know ginger Jay is not canon Post-Crisis! Or that even then he chose to dye his hair black! (Yes I’m bitter that’s how they fucked over Talia too UGH)

At least his costume is fixed; it combines the dumb supervillain-y costume with his old biker-y look, and tbh I think it’s really cool. Aside from the bright red guns that look like toys.

Not that that lasts because this is one of if not the last appearance of Jay before the reboot! Thanks, Barry.

Robin 80th Anniversary 100 Page Super Spectacular: Jason’s story is called “More Time”, which is a story with Robin Jason and Red Hood Jason have a parallel story giving Bruce a gift on his birthday. Specifically, fixing his father’s old watch.

Mischa 'IN MY COUNTRY IT IS-' Bachinski

Noel had always wanted tragedy.

He didn’t know why. He had just always found it beautiful. This was punctuated by his fantasies of being Monique Gibeau, a hooker who in every situation Noel came up with, suffered some terrible event. It felt nice to escape into a fantasy that was more exciting than his real life.

But those fantasies didn’t matter much when he was dead.

Stuck in limbo with his fellow choir members, Noel often tried to fall back into his fantasies. It didn't work though. He was always distracted.

When he imagined Monique taking a lover who would then leave her for dead in the middle of the night, the man always had the deepest brown eyes.

When he imagined Monique being approached by a man at the bar, he was always tall and strong.

When he imagined Monique being on the other end a man trying to convince her to come home with him, the man always had a deep voice and a foreign accent.

Whenever he imagined anything it was always Mischa, Mischa, Mischa.

And the thing is, he had had a crush on the ukrainian boy back when they were alive. So this was nothing new, but it was infinitely more frustrating when Mischa was one of the only people he could talk with.

“Noel Gruber!”

Noel was snapped out of his musing, turning to see Mischa jogging towards him. ‘Fuck’ he thought. There was no way he was going to survive with how much he and Mischa were talking.

Mischa sat down next to him on the couch, looking so excited he could be compared to a golden retriever. “Noel! Can you do something for me?”

Noel smiled, “Sure, Misch. What is it?”

"Can you kiss me?”

Noel froze. “What?”

Mischa didn’t seemed to be disencouraged. “I am 99% sure of something, I want to make sure I am 100%. Ricky refuses to help me.” He moved so that he had a knee on the couch and was leaning over Noel.

“You’re being even more vague now. Just explain it to me.” Noel adjusted so that both his legs were on the couch, making it easier to back away.

Mischa sat down on legs, which Noel doubted was comfortable. “I think I am thing where you like girls and boys. Want to test it with someone, and Ricky said no. You are only other boy.”

Noel immediately felt a wave of something wash over him. Anger, maybe. Probably remorse as well. “Mischa, I know you’re probably heartbroken about Talia, but that doesn’t mean you have to find a distraction.”

Mischa shook his head, a new, determined look on his face. “No, not it. Have accepted I can no longer have Talia. I just want to test this.”

Now Noel was just pissed. “Even so, you can’t just use me to settle your sexuality crisis. What happens if you turn out to not be queer? That 99% could all be theoretical.”

“No it is not. I am almost sure because normal things with certain boys make me, ah, fuzzy. Like how brushing hands with girl makes some boys excited. I just have never actually done anything with a boy.” Mischa seemed to be sweating, because he was wiping his palms on his pants.

“I don’t want to just be your confirmation that you're bisexual or whatever.” Noel looked over to the side. Ocean and Constance were a little farther away, and probably trying to listen. Ricky was with them but he looked more focused on Mischa, an almost worried look on his face.

Mischa huffed out and Noel could see out of the corner of his eye that he looked almost frustrated. “I promise, you will not be. You trust me, yes?”

“Fine, sure.” Noel fully faced him again and crossed his arms over his chest. Was he making this difficult? Yes. Did he care? No.

The Ukrainian’s eyes widened, like he was surprised Noel accepted. “Oh, okay.”

They sat like that for a beat, neither of them moving. Noel rolled his eyes, “Are you gonna do anything? I told you you could kiss me.”

“Yes. Just… nervous. I think.” Mischa sat down on his legs. He wasn’t looking at Noel anymore.

“Oh my fucking…” Noel grabbed Mischa's face and kissed him. The double-edged sword of being the only gay guy in a small town is that while you may get shunned, you may also get a lot of practice from closeted guys who want to fuck around with someone they know isn’t likely to turn them down

The kiss didn’t last too long. Noel just wanted to get it over with. He was ready for Mischa to throw himself back and realize that he was not, in fact, attracted to men.

When the kiss was over, Mischa sat completely still. Noel’s hands were still on his face, making it so Noel could feel the way the other boy’s face heated up. He could see it, too, with the way Mischa’s cheeks started to turn slightly pink.

“Well? You alright, Mischa?” Noel asked. Mischa blinked but still didn’t say anything. Noel lightly smacked him which seemed to wake him up a bit.

“A-ah. I am fine. Can you kiss me again?” Mischa licked his lips. Noel was starting to wonder if he had really fallen for this same joke again. You’d think he would have known better by now.

But Noel was nothing if not a bit weak once something started. He kissed Mischa again, and this time the other boy kissed back. Noel felt Mischa move his hands to his hips. Noel moved his own hands to Mischa’s shoulders.

They didn’t realize they were getting a bit heated until they were separated by someone. They both looked over and surely enough, Ocean was there with the most appalled look on her face. “You both need to chill! There are other people here, oh my god!”

Noel started laughing and apparently it was contagious, since Mischa started giggling. Ocean groaned and walked back to where she had been sitting with Constance. Mischa spoke in between his giggles, “I’m surprised she didn’t try to stop it earlier.”

“Me too. Maybe she was stuck in shock.” Noel smiled. He would never admit that hearing Mischa giggle made him feel like he had butterflies in his stomach. “Well, did that answer your question?”

Mischa looked him in the eyes. Noel thought his heart skipped a beat. “Yeah. I liked the kiss during your song, but I thought maybe that was just in my head from Karnak. If it was, I still like boys either way.’”

“Oh, really? Did you like the slap too?” Noel asked, a grin on his face. He expected Mischa to laugh or roll his eyes. Instead, he looked as if he had been caught. His eyes were wide and he didn’t have a smile any more.

Noel started laughing again, “Oh my god, you did!” Mischa put his head in the crook of Noel’s neck and said “Shut up.” though it came out very muffled.

Over with the others, Ricky had a self satisfied look on his face, Ocean had puffed up cheeks and Constance had an amused smile on her face.

“Told you. Mischa may be the lover boy, but Noel has experience.” Ricky said. Ocean groaned.

“I know! I just thought that if Mischa was going to beeline his way over there he would at least be able to follow through if Noel accepted.” Ocean crossed her arms and scrunched up her nose.

Constance giggled, “Well, he never has thought things through, has he?”

Okay, but they'd initially become enemies over MC right? Both of them being into her, chasing her etc. It's just too good to not utilise Cherry gate and the other S1 drama for this.

But they're more focused on each other than MC, which of course they don't realise. Everyone else are totally watching them argue in the gym while being shirtless and sweaty all 👀🍿 though (especially Talia and Tim, Jake and Rohan are busy with their own thing).

They're the perfect example of the "two bros chillin' in a hot tub 5 feet apart cause they're not gay" meme, because they spend all their time together even when they 'hate' each other and totally aren't just dealing with heaps of sexual tension through anger and denial.

In this headcanon, MC gets with Jake or Talia, and they're both left looking at each other all "what now" and finally start opening up to each other.

I love to imagine them realising how much they have in common, and how much they've actually bonded without realising it. Maybe they share a hug that goes on just a bit longer than it should? Maybe there's prolonged eye contact? Hands almost touching? I want this to be a ✨slow burn✨

Denial, denial, denial until the end of the show. Maybe they get drunk once it's all over, maybe they have a last fight that ends in the most passionate kiss? I'm not sure, but with these two I think it'd be strong passion and a sense of despair over it, because who doesn't love seeing two macho men giving in to their feelings of love?

idk it kinda rubs me the wrong way how many more ppl ship mischa with noel over mischa with talia. like i am all for!!! nischa!!! but considering talia is his canon love interest and he has an entire (second !!! everyone else has one main song he got two!!!) song abt how much he loves her and wants to get back to her, like omfg he loved this girl. and bc he was nice for one scene and shared his beer and stood in for moniques lover in noels lament, eveyone trips over themselves shipping them like. omg. also kinda like, can't they just be friends. they're allowed to be friends. please. just bc noel is gay, it doesn't mean he's going to fall for the first guy around him let him have friends. also aren't mischa and talia engaged.

okay, i finished first kill, and off the top of my head, here’s my initial thoughts upon first watch. it got obscenely long, so it’s going under a read more.

note: i will NOT be commenting on aspects of the cgi or production value because it was out of their control and irrelevant the quality of the show as a show:

tldr: i thought it was a VERY strong pilot season, and i absolutely loved it. i think that if you go into it with preconceived ideas (which i did) you might not click with it for an episode or two, but once you let the show shine for what it IS, not what you thought it would be, you can fully enjoy it. the standouts of the season to me were, of course, juliette and calliope both individually as well as together, talia, elinor, and the friendship between ben and juliette.

things i liked:

in general, the entire concept of a vampire and a vampire hunter (but make it high school) is super interesting to me and is what drew me in in the first place

the chemistry between the actresses for juliette and calliope make the show imo. not once did i EVER doubt that juliette was head over heels for her. playing on a constant loop in the back of her mind is “heart eyes” by coin

i loved the way they styled and based the homes/clothes/etc of the vampires as traditional classic and the hunters as modern. it wasn’t thrown in your face like “look how clever we are,” it was just a very smart, classy non verbal way of dividing the two even more.

the main families were pretty interesting, especially the burns family, and i felt like they added to the story well

i liked the subplot of juliette’s dad not being a legacy or vampire by blood. it helped humanize the mom and gave her family an interesting dynamic too

this is such a small thing but the childhood best friends to lovers trope with juliette and ben being spun into childhood friends to lovers to gay awakening for both of them was so nice

i also love that being gay is NEVER a source of conflict even though it’s addressed explicitly. i know that coming of age/coming out/homophobia storylines help a lot of people, but personally i’m really sick of watching every single queer story be devastating or depressing or highlighting how many people in the world hate people like us/me. juliette being out without being overt, talking about girls with her best friend, being teased about her crushes? that was me in high school! and i love to see it without being reminded about the fact that yes, some people are homophobic. i know. let my little gay people on screens be happy.

this show exemplifies how to do “bad people as good characters.” there are some characters for which you are shown time and again that they are NOT good people, but it’s still enjoyable and interesting to watch (and at times even root for) them because you understand completely WHY they did what they did, what their motives are, their fears, their joys, etc. there isn’t a single character that’s just “i do bad things because that’s my job as The Bad Person,” each and every one is some sort of gray with their own lines of thinking that, to them, are logical

hell, even when the good people do bad things, you understand it too! it’s never “wow good person does something completely out of character for drama,” you completely understand why they’re doing what they do or why they believe what they do, and that makes it even MORE heartbreaking. the theo storyline in the finale was so so so tough not because i thought it would be sad if he did die but because i UNDERSTOOD why his dad wanted to do it, AND i understood why the mom didn’t. there was no win, and no loss, no matter what happened, but you couldn’t look away. that’s tough as shit to do well, and first kill nailed it.

i LOVED the breakup. i hate that they broke up, but i love the way it happened. here is a full post about it

calliope’s mom, talia, is ELECTRIC. she was the star of the finale and was such a constant throughout the entire show. she’s magical to watch on screen, and her character is one of the most well-written and complex on the show.

things i didn’t like:

i felt like they tried to fit too much plot into episodes 2, 3, and 4, and it got a little bit overwhelming and unrealistic considering how little time they’ve known each other

the pacing of the relationship early on was a little rushed too (but you could argue it was due to the bite bond)

i wish they developed the guild a little more; what are their rankings based on? how were they started? how do they recruit?

oliver was just a really confusing addition and felt like a plot point more than anything

i wanted a little more info on the legacies’ limits and powers. like, i feel as though any vampire media that follows twilight HAS to address whether animal blood is good enough 🤷🏻‍♀️ i literally could not stop thinking about that the whole time lmao

as a personal opinion, i felt like the rapidly changing main plot and endless side plots were not interesting enough to carry the show as much as it did. this is the kind of show i watch for the characters, not the story, and so the plot was actually kind of taking me out of it

end notes/what i might have changed:

as someone that has zero professional experience in storytelling, screen writing, or tv show production, BUT has watched a shit ton of it, here’s what i would have done

first, if they really wanted to, the entire show could have been the first episode elongated. like, show me juliette and cal getting to know each other for weeks and slowly show me their families, their dynamics, cal realizing juliette is a vampire, juliette realizing cal is a hunter, etc. i would watch the shit out of that

BUT that’s not what they were going for and i respect that, so keeping more plot in mind, i felt like they could have spent at least two whole episodes on building juliette/cal and world building their families. then ramp up the plot slightly in which the big climax is juliette’s big party and cal’s family crashing it.

OR have the build up to their relationship, skip the raid, and then spend more episodes on the murder mystery part

both the raid and the murder storyline were interesting for different reasons, but to do BOTH felt like it was so much in such a short amount of time.

that being said, i absolutely LOVED the show as it is, and i need a season 2 stat.

Review for “Ophelia After All” by Racquel Marie!

Hello, Tumblrians! I’ll try to publish at least 4 reviews this week. If I go on another unpredicted hiatus, at least I can have all this writing to make up for my sudden absence?

Real talk though, I’m sorry about the inconsistent schedule. I get pretty self-conscious about this Tumblr account (there’s a reason I don’t use hashtags anymore), and also I’ve been kinda exhausted in the last week. I already told you guys about South Carolina. (There was originally gonna be a 540-word rant after this but I cut it. That was definitely for the best!)

I really gotta set realistic standards for myself. I keep thinking I’ll be prepared to upload reviews for this account but then I get hit with anxiety paralysis and just never upload anything. It feels like a chore sometimes, even when I made this for fun. I know not many people follow this, because I stay out of hashtags and the people who actually choose to follow me ‘cause they saw my reviews somewhere and liked them leave because I’m inconsistent. I’m sorry for repeatedly disappointing you all.

Okay! Time to actually start my book review!

Ophelia After All by Racquel Marie follows 17 year-old Ophelia: daughter of an Irish English professor and a Cuban immigrant, she’s spent her whole life being a passionate rose gardener, gossip lover, and hopeless romantic with a crush on nearly every boy she meets. But a few weeks before prom, when she undeniably falls for a female classmate named Talia, she begins to question the identity she’s developed over time—and how much of it was because she wanted to appease the people around her.

I really loved this book! Ophelia was a realistic teenage protagonist, and especially liked the dynamic she had with her friend group (which was one of many relationships paramount to the story). They teased and supported each other, called people out on their shit, fought and later made up, like a lot of friend groups do. While I get that not everyone likes to read about teenage drama, it was resolved by the end, and it didn’t take the melodramatic approach. There was also an interesting examination of Ophelia getting used to being around guys and not necessarily liking them romantically! Maybe it’s because I’m gay but I appreciated that too.

Anyhow! Other things I liked: Talia and Ophelia’s friendship! Ugh the embarrassment in the middle though😬 (WHY OPHELIA). I did like that even after everything they maintained that platonic relationship, though. I was expecting for it to be a romance because a lot of the YAs of this variety I read typically are, this is the first one I’ve read where the MC didn’t get the girl and learned to deal with that! (Also, Talia was sweet.) The multifaceted discussion of Ophelia’s identity was cool too, mixing together discussions on heteronormativity, culture, and dealing with the future in a coming-of-age story. I also just really love queer contemporary stories! It’s something about the light, sometimes snarky but overall honest writing style of basically every single one I read that leaves me whizzing through several hundreds of pages in under a day.

And of course, you can’t go wrong with the additional rose anecdotes sprinkled throughout the story.

(Sidenote, though: I was reading this the same week I was reading and listening to Bianca Torre Is Afraid Of Everything, so there was this weird coincidence between the two where both MCs had Shakespeare-obsessed moms who named their children after lady characters from his plays, assumed they were cishet, and initially weren’t trusted in their coming out journeys lmao?!)

Uhmmm I don’t know what else to add on, except for that I just really liked that although everything was resolved there were still consequences and (eventual) self-awareness, and this and Felix Ever After are probably my favorites of the “messy coming-of-age” queer contemporary subgenre! (Which isn’t actually a real subgenre, but it should be considered one, right?!) My positive reviews are always very short, lol. Just look at my When The Angels Left The Old Country one, I remember I was going in circles? So I’ll cap it off here!

hws Prussia × hws Hungary (still Hetalia lol) - I actually love them for reasons similar to SerbRo(that is, them being childhood friends to lovers), but I also just. Theyre The Ship. My first hetalia ship so I am overly attached to them tbh. I also dont condone cheating IRL obviously, but I like the stories where theyve got A Thing going on while Hun is married to Austria lol

I actually have a hard time deciding my ship for the 3rd spot, but right now a non hetalia pairing would be probably...Noel Gruber × Mischa Bachinski × Talia Bolinska (Ride The Cyclone). My favourite non-hetalia OT3(altho Noel & Talia are just besties cause Noel is gay and only together romantically with Mischa, while Mischa has two hands ;] ). Theyre so real and dear to me, okay?

So in my Reclamation AU prequel after Bruce Wayne adopts Dick, well actually I should mention the rumors before he adopts Dick the thh ethe th. Okay when he got back, wait should I mmention before too? Nahhhh more backstory to actually further down the storyline, weirdly enough that the past and future are linked together for some reason. (TW mentions/implies of homophobia and bi erasure and pedophilia and slut shaming)

So when Bruce gets back home after being legally classified as missing and dead, he assumes a neutral persona of socialite. But the missing gaps get filled in of vacations or illegal sites or something wild. Bruce decides to use the weird playboy assumption to his advantage and uses his looks to try going on dates with people.

Then, he decided to use modeling to also hinder any suspicions, he couldn’t show his scars so he went with clothing. He somehow made tons of model friends where he got them to pretend date him for publicity. Between the models, they think he either has an ego, has a secret lover, or is gay. Now the socialites and public see the fake model dates between the few real dates. Socialites get jealous and starts making up stories like “yeah we totally slept together (fuckkkk why doesn’t he like me???)” or “y’know it’s kinda weird he never keeps any of those hotties it’s almost like he’s a bad boyfriend or there’s something wrong with him yeah? (Please please please date me instead)”

(almost forgot) I already mentioned Selina, but her rumors consisted of slut shaming, and the infantilization of Bruce. Talia is actually included for a small while (idk how to make the timeline work, so I think it’s just easier if I just don’t think about it? Intentional plot hole). So to work with my timeline, either Talia already had a baby before Bruce gets back to Gotham, or they have a fling almost right when he gets back home. Either way, the media thinks she’s one of Bruce’s foreign flings from vacation (true actually), so they kinda dismiss her as a partner candidate. She doesn’t gets brought up again until later when i figure out if she needs to meet with Bruce again before Damian. Most of Bruce’s dates include bastardization or angelification, zero in between because nuance doesn’t exist (drama is always extreme, which imo is stupid but whatever).

After Bruce adopts Dick, things take a major turn for the worst. A single father not marrying when becoming someone’s guardian??? What’s wrong with him!!! The biggest conclusion created the pedophilic rumor. “He must’ve not stayed with anyone because he likes kids!!!” This lead to the other rumor to take a twist, homophobia.

So out of pure plot convenience, Clark at some point gets in touch with Bruce to talk about the Justice League, but that gets turned into a fake relationship. See the only way to distill rumors is to use more rumors! Obviously. Idk how to deal with Clark’s reputation, so I’m making it technically a fake secret relationship that protects Clark’s identity mostly. Anyways, now the rumors leaned into the gay rumors instead of the homophobic rumors, society started saying the pedophilic rumors are homophobic. Blah blah blah and then people got “scared” of getting “canceled” so they reverted back to the average playboy stance. This has made lasting impacts towards both Bruce’s and Dick’s lives but yeah they’ve moved on.

(Honestly i just wanted to explain the fake secret relationship plot point but now I really wanna go for all the rumors)

The gay rumors including the (fake) secret relationship really got the media questioning who he’s in romantic/sexual cohorts with, male specific only. It affected some characters to distance themselves…

Jason got classist rumors and reputation, which turned into “missing or dead” rumors just like Bruce had so lots of people were expecting him to come back. Tim was basically “the perfect child” since he was already upper class and he was considered most likely to run the Wayne business in the future. Damian had two sides where one was racist and blamed Talia for existing, and the other side where they blamed Bruce for being reckless. Cass had the standard stereotypes but with ableism included. Steph never appeared in the news besides as Tim’s ex. Barbara only showed up as Gordon’s daughter.

Actually Barbara got the “dating Bruce” rumors with Bruce but that never went anywhere significant, just made things awkward between them and with Gordon. (It’s sorta related to another side plot but i don’t feel like sharing here).

Duke appeared as an adoptee but also not because he avoided the Wayne’s reputation. He gets a passing mention as someone who sometimes takes refuge in their house, as if he was never there, but he sometimes is but he just gets ignored for probably racist and classist reasons. Among Duke’s citizens group of people near him totally know him as the guy with a rich guy’s backing tho. (I have completely different ideas for him, i’ll do another post later).
