How I (roughly) imagine this scale:

1- I see myself as a faster reader than the average person. I can breeze through a text quickly and still understand almost all of it

2- I read at a "normal" speed. I need to pace myself but can consistently read and comprehend a text in a reasonable time frame

3- I see myself as a slower reader than other people. It takes me a long time to get through a text and if I try to go too fast I won't understand it

Obviously this can vary by your mood, the type of text, etc. and this is a very imprecise scale with some overlap, I'm just casually curious!!

#i consider myself a sloooowwww reader #i dont really track it when reading for pleasure #but when im reading something dense like a political theory text i've realized i can only read 6 or 7 pages an hour (give or take)#in order for me to feel like im actually Getting It i need to stop and annotate while i read and also frequently re-read certain passages #this is on my mind because im reading a book for my thesis prepping for the semester and it is a slog for me #it's very interesting but i have to break it up into 45-60 minute chunks with breaks or else i'll go insane because of how long it takes me #it took me 4.5 hours to read 30 pages im not sure that's normal hahahahaaaaa #when i read for pleasure it's still slow i just dont have a stat lol

there’s a line in authoritarian personality where Adorno says that reactionaries always position themselves as these brave truth tellers who are sticking it to the man and being controversial as a form of fighting back against oppression, and then all of their stated opinions are just the baseline accepted bigoted position that society takes for granted as true. he was talking explicitly about fascists when he said this but I feel like this is true for a lot of people who present their extremely pedestrian political opinions (eg “men are oppressed”) as counter-cultural and subversive

#he doesn’t use the term reactionary he uses ‘pseudo-conservative’ but he uses it basically the way reactionary is used #I want to re-read that book. I feel like I would disagree with a lot more of it now but it’s probably his best work aside from #the culture industry. also need to re read that lol

Howl Pendragon as a character prepared me for Astarion Ancunin and I feel like I can't really explain that to anyone who doesn't just get it like you have to have been there when Howl turned himself into literal goop because his hair was dyed one (1) shade redder than usual

i am upsetting myself at ungodly hours by imagining how the scene in apple and raven's dorm room must've looked like after raven refused to sign.

like imagine apple sobbing the night away and raven tries to comfort her only to be rebuffed and she spends the entire night awake and staring at the ceiling while the guilt eats away at her as she hears apple's quiet sobs.

and apple's there feeling so hurt and angry and alone, and in that moment she probably wants nothing more than a friend, a comforting presence, but she can't even look her bsf in the eye because she's just so upset about what's just happened.

idk there's something about the two of them being so steeped in distress and sadness because raven can't force apple to understand her and apple can't comprehend the reasons for raven's decisions.

and the two of them love each other SO MUCH, but right then they're just stuck in that suffocating dorm room with only each other for company, wondering what they're going to do next.

i re-read young justice and think again about how peter david twice gave us what comics rarely show - abusive mothers who look like real living characters, not caricatures of bad parents. and at the same time, he allows them to receive arcs of redemption without sweeping their past sins under the rug.

bonnie king-jones and sylvia danvers are probably some of my favorite supporting characters in his works. they're tough women with many flaws who hurt their daughters badly, but also at the moment when they realize that they are about to lose cissie and linda, they stand up, admit their guilt and begin to work on themselves to fix these relationship.

it's not a complete reconciliation, but it's a start.
