his name is siffrin and they’re the main character of the game in stars and time!! it came out very recently (nov 23) and i only have it bc my friend gifted it to me because “this game is going to make you so ill. you’re going to get so attached to the characters and kin the protagonist within 45 minutes.” it is. ohhhhhhh mygod it is so good. its so good. i havent been posting about it because im not even done yet (i just made it to the start of act 4 out of 5 today) but it already might be my new top favorite video game. that’s how much i love it

it’s an undertale/omori/oneshot esque rpg where you start the day before your party’s climactic battle against The King, who’s been slowly freezing the entire country of vaugarde in time. things don’t go quite right though. teehee

it’s got a stunning art style, an EXTREMELY engaging and interesting plot which has completely blindsided me multiple times, and some of the best character writing i’ve ever seen, in my life, ever. i got so attached so quickly it almost gave me whiplash, and as you keep playing you keep loving them more and more. also it’s really good at making you think everything’s gonna be okay and then pulling the floor out from under you and it gets worse every time. i love it.

It is an amazing Canon Divergence Fix-it fic from one of the most memorable moments of Andor onwards, with beautiful prose that fits the mood of the show so so well and will make you feel just as deeply for these characters. Today: I Dream In Another Language (2017)

I watched this movie a few weeks ago, and it STUCK.

(Don Evaristo and Don Isauro just before their first interview to record Zikril together.)

I Dream in Another Language is a Mexican magic realism movie about the death of a culture. It documents the efforts of a linguist trying to save the (fictional) language Zikril, spoken only by three old indigenous people. When one of them dies, the studies come to a halt, as the other two, Don Evaristo and Don Isauro, have not spoken to each other in over fifty years and categorically refuse to have anything to do with each other. As he looks further into this, the linguist discovers that the real reason for this feud is their past relationship and an awful lot of internalized homophobia.

Zkril is an artificial language, created specially for this movie out of respect for the people who still speak the endangered and disappearing languages today. The fact that it has seemingly magic powers, and that its speakers appear to be living on after their death, clearly puts the story into the magic realism genre.

This is NOT a happy movie. The internalized homophobia part is no joke, and the main theme of course is the loss of a language, and the culture that comes with it. 

But it damn sure is leaving an emotional impact.

I strongly suggest that everyone who is even vaguely interested in this subject read up about languages and language conservation. The Wikipedia page of this movie is as a good place to start as any, since there are related articles linked in the references list. I also would like to thank @celluloidrainbow for bringing this film to my attention.

Apollodorus' Library/the Bibliotheke + Timothy Gantz's Early Greek Myth is SUCH a good combination for info about Greek mythology.

One is an ancient source, from later in antiquity but with a mix of old and newer versions of myth. It's also a myth compendium sort of thing (and there is an attempt at making it a single, "coherent" timeline, but how internally consistent that is is another matter lol).

The second is a modern academic book but eminently readable and focused on earlier versions (Archaic to Classical, thereabouts), but he also cites later sources if it's relevant. It's laid out in a systematic way and is real easy to use, and contains so many fun little details/bits of information that gets easily lost, especially in modern retellings.
