re: some of the tags on my boyd gifset about his glasses
as one of the tags rightfully pointed out, these are NOT safety glasses in any way, shape or form. they provide no side protection, and not to make an OSHA joke but these are soooo unlikely OSHA approved in terms of the lenses, which require a specific amount of impact testing in order to pass. anyone who's had to work with power tools would recognize on sight that these would do nothing for him in terms of actual protection
Tumblr media
so i like to think he wears glasses ONLY in because he’s the powder man in the mines! he already has limited vision given that he’s really only working with a headlamp and the string lights. he has to be pretty precise with what he’s doing, so he's probably farsighted and doesn’t need glasses normally
when he reads, he holds the book very far away from himself, which also suggests that he's incredibly farsighted
Tumblr media Tumblr media
when he writes a note to ava he's also noticeably far away from the paper
Tumblr media
i don't know about you but personally me and my astigmatism would have my nose halfway pressed against that counter if i weren't wearing my glasses. but boyd's clearly quite comfortable without his when it doesn't require him to look up close to anything
so it's likely that he just doesn't wear his glasses unless he really has a need to do something up close to himself. as someone who worked in theatre, costuming and props rarely do things like this without cause or meaning, and his glasses fall right in line with other little things we see him do.
so tl;dr, boyd is probably farsighted and prefers using glasses in the mines so he can see what he's doing and not blow them all to kingdom come
also he just looks like a cutie

you rock those ray-ban knockoffs, babe <3

Help me spend my money
I won $75 worth of Amazon gift cards at a work holiday party and am going to treat myself with a new model. I’m leaning towards either Shadowsun or Farsight
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If I get Shadowsun I can also afford this sweet banner to hang over my desk for still less than Farsight
Tumblr media
However Farsight might just be the coolest T’au model ever and I really want to use him to Tank Shock shit

I am holding this art of Ingo needing reading glasses in Hisui oh so gently in my cupped hands, it makes my heart so soft.
Because like I can just imagine that with Ingo and Emmet, after Emmet Falls and they reunite in Hisui. Ingo already needs reading glasses by then, so any time he needs to read small print, he passes it off to Emmet (before he realizes just how bad his sight has gotten though, Ingo will sit there squinting at something very hard...then hold it out at arm's length, then squint at it again, until Emmet's finally just like "Ingo-niisan oh my god just give it here" ksozjsksk).
As is often the case with these two, though, Emmet is eventually also farsighted, to the point that he and Ingo match. So Ingo will try to read something, pass it off with an "Emmet, my dear, could you read this to me," Emmet will try to read it, and then pass it off with a "Hey, Akari, what does this say." XD
Sometimes when Ingo asks Emmet to read something for him, instead of just taking the paper from Ingo like a normal fucking person, Emmet will come up behind him and hook his chin on Ingo's shoulder, with his arms wrapped around his waist, and then tell him to hold it closer or further away. No one in the nearby vicinity wants to be there anymore.
"Closer. ...No, further. ...Closer, actually. No no, like really close! ...Hmm, too close."
"...Emmet, my love. Are you perhaps messing with me."
"Yes. I left my glasses at The Wallflower last night."
And then without even turning around or anything, Ingo bops Emmet with whatever he's holding akzhjzjzhdjxi

I love the "glasses are disability" thing because it applies to basically every complaint abled people have about disability
"You're not even that bad, why would you get that?" Have you ever used a magnifying glass for small details or zoomed in on a picture
"Why do you have that accommodation TODAY?" Why do you wear reading glasses when you're reading
"It seems like your 'needs' are inconsistent." Yeah and you wear sunglasses when it's sunny and not all the time
"But you can technically walk without that." Yeah and if I put the page really close to your face you could read it, it would just hurt and be hugely impractical, inconvenient, and limiting
"But you COULD go without it all the time, you don't NEED it to live." And maybe you could technically see without your glasses, doesn't mean it's comfortable or practical day to day
"If you REALLY had a hard time seeing you would have glasses." Have you ever known someone who couldn't afford a new pair of glasses? Or eye appointments? Someone who needed vision therapy or special prism glasses? Someone whose vision only gets bad during migraines or seizures? Someone with astigmatism that glasses can't help? Someone who didn't qualify for LASIK?
"You only use it when you're out in public." Have you ever gotten up to use the bathroom at night without putting on your glasses
"Decorating it is just trying to get attention, and it's a medical device so stop glamorizing it." Do you hate any patterned or colorful glasses frames too? Art with characters who wear glasses? People who make OCs with glasses? Glasses chains, prescription sunglasses, aesthetic fake glasses with tinted lenses?
"There are secretly lots of people just using aids for fun and attention." There are secretly lots of people wearing fake glasses or colored contacts for fun and attention, it does not affect you
"We need to find fakers, they're stealing disabled resources!" Someone pretending to need glasses is "taking" a seat in the front from someone who might need it more. That sucks and they shouldn't do that. But I'm not going to scrutinize every person who wears glasses to see if I think they really need that seat. You personally are not the arbiter of who is (based on the random times you've seen them) secretly not disabled
"My friend has that and doesn't act like that." Does every pair of glasses in production, or even every pair close to your prescription, work for you? Is your vision identical to every other nearsighted person?
"If you can do X why can't you do Y? Some people with that can do Y."/"But if you have that how can you do X? People with that can't usually do X." Some people are nearsighted and some people are farsighted and some people are both. Some farsighted people can read some without glasses and some can't. And good distance vision doesn't mean you don't ever need glasses, it's just an entirely different reason you'd need glasses
"You're too young to need that." And there are young people who need bifocal lenses
"Why don't you use this DIFFERENT aid though, it would look like you didn't even have an aid." Why doesn't everyone in the world wear contacts
"Why can't I/my friend/my kid play with it?" Do you let random strangers and children try on your glasses at the grocery store
"I was just trying to help, I thought you'd need a push/you were in the way." Are you cool with me suddenly pulling your glasses off your face to clean them, or because the glare was distracting me
"You'll eventually stop using it though right?" Are you planning on no longer needing glasses someday
Disabled people are free to add
I am aware this is not a 1-to-1 perfectly accurate post. Do not come into the notes trying to "um actually this isn't a perfect comparison." I know. Just don't

also, hot take, but speaking as someone who has volunteered to work on big projects tackling difficult issues out of community love in the past, I am just. is the otw probably a really toxic place to volunteer and work right now? Sure is, probably! Is public pressure that doesn't come with an influx of new people volunteering to do the messy work of figuring out what a better policy is, how to create anti harassment safeguards, and otherwise fixing the problem actually useful? Fuck no it is definitely not!
like I will be 1000% honest, I have in fact been asked personally to volunteer to help a community transition on a much smaller scale to fix problems of this magnitude to encourage a much smaller scale organization to work and perform a community service. and I took that job with a strong sense of "ye gods this is going to suck and I'm going to piss people off by doing things wildly imperfectly, but if I don't help provide my work it might not get done because this is fucking hard and no one is paying."
and I did it and I stopped as quickly as humanly possible. now that shit is someone else's volunteer problem and I'm delighted, because let us be real I'm a disabled middle aged lady with a day job and I don't have full time professional effort to dedicate to stuff I do in my spare time for free. that's one of the fun things about disability actually, it constricts the total store of focused labor hours available to me to put in, especially on landmine topics like extending the scope of my archiving projects to create a farsighted anti harassment policy that can't be weaponized.
so like. the work needs doing. anything anyone does is going to be imperfect and problematic and bad, because it is being done on an almost purely volunteer basis by people who are for whatever reason willing to donate high level professional skills and labor for free and don't need to do stuff for actual money and support instead. like sure the budget is enormous for servers but none of that goes to labor.
Outrage is going to do jack shit unless people volunteer to roll up their sleeves and start doing the work to donate a better policy, or better management. This shit is fucking difficult, exhausting, and impossible to do without pissing people off. I am damn sure not getting involved right now, and that's why I have not been commenting. Public pressure is not going to do jack shit if it didn't come with support.
If this is an issue that is important to you, you have to back up your outrage with resources. Since the AO3 does not exchange money for labor, that means showing up to offer to help build something different. as I said, I am a middle aged disabled lady who finds fandom and archive repositories to be important and helpful and I don't have any labor left to donate, so I have been reserving comment on complaint. If this is a thing that matters to you, congratulations! Public pressure is only useful insofar as it can be used to make the org let you help. It's up to you to actually help.

People seemed interested in Library Orc Blorbo so I decided to write down my headcanons about him:
His name is Garthaglir (it’s Sindarin for “poem keeper”)
He renamed himself after discovering a love for library sciences, shortly after he moved to the valley
Rivendell’s head librarian
Used to be an extremely dangerous warrior, now considers himself retired
Extremely tall and buff, blue skin, salt-and-pepper hair and a well-trimmed beard
Very distinguished, very polite
Has a tiny pair of spectacles he uses to read because he's farsighted
He doesn’t look like an old man but he is one deep in his heart
He was one of the first reformed orcs to end up in Rivendell, so he helps other orcs adjust to living there
Basically invented Middle Earth’s version of the Dewey Decimal system
Look, Rivendell’s library is like, unfathomably huge, there’s 6000+ years of books in there, someone had to organize it
He, Elrond, and Erestor are the only people who have keys to the part of the library where they keep the cursed books
The three of them also have a monthly book club
He holds a weekly story time for the kids
(Yes, he does do funny voices, no, you are not allowed to comment on it)
Has tracked people down at 3 AM before because “M’am? M’am you have an overdue book, here, I brought my library stamp would you mind just checking this out again? You can keep it out for another month that way. Just a moment, ah, yes thank you, I’ll be on my way now. Excellent choice in reading material.”
He has a fancy sunhat he wears outside during the day so the sun doesn’t burn him, it was a gift from small Arwen and he cherishes it
He has a library cat, her name is Mittens and he would die for her
Uses his free time to teach himself different languages; there are hundreds in Rivendell’s books
Enjoys recommending books to visitors, he’s gotten really good at getting a read on what people will like
Personally, when he’s in the mood for fiction, he prefers a good mystery

Toward the end of the book "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley, there's a scene where the character John makes a love confession to a woman named Lenina.
John grew up in a kind of preserve for "savages" outside the sexually liberated hedonist World State, where he read Shakespeare among other old books.
He tells Lenina that he wants to be alone because he has something to tell her, and then after a lot of struggle he finally confesses that he is in love with her.
In response, Lenina says, "Oh, if that's all, why didn't you say so earlier?" and immediately starts stripping off her clothes.
John is horrified, covers his eyes and immediately becomes angry and demands that she put her clothes back on and get out of his house.
Now we all know that this behavior was a result of her overly-sexualized upbringing that sees "love" as synonymous with "sex". But what about John? Why was he upset? The Freudians and the Conservative Realists of our time might well say that the reason John was upset is not that he did not want to have sex with her; in fact, they might say, since John's ultimate intention was nevertheless to eventually have sex with her, that his anger in this scenario must stem from the fact that he desired a more reliable and stable long term sexual partner, and the fact that she has so little self control reveals her as being unworthy for a man with more farsighted goals. To which I would reply do you have no soul
