#I DECLARE TODAY A NATIONAL HOLIDAY

Note
the hedric anon here again :) to your previous post, YEAH, we're balling. new canon has arisen!!! you are so right about harry not becoming an auror!! all he wants is a loving family; he's already lost enough chasing dark wizards, and he would not sacrifice any time he could be spending with them... he also has The Money, you know. a shit load of it... and i can imagine him just casually buying the newest broom on the market on a whim even if cedric's team's regulations forbid using a personal broom (unfair advantage all that) because harry would so obviously overcompensate for the negligence he had to survive through as a child and spoil his beloved rotten.
and YES, cedric being a bit oblivious, but still a voice of reason would do the whole golden trio much good during their 5th year (funny thing, for the longest time i thought cedric was a 7th year in GoF, so i was kinda shooketh with all the fics where he returns to hogwarts the next year). imagine him getting to know sirius (harry has talked so much about him that sirius already loves the boy) and maybe introducing a few diggory family traditions to sirius and harry, because they had no time yet to form their own. and his dad's face when he's introduced to harry's godparents??? an ex-convict and a werewolf, who somehow work wonders as parental figures. mwah.
Not me learning through this ask that Cedric was only a sixth-year when he put his name in the goblet 😂 Now I am also shook. But omg yes that would make so much sense for my OOTP AU! Harry is in fifth year and Cedric is in seventh and he's like "wtf Harry just use the damn mirror that Sirius gave you! I love you so much but you are so dumb."
And YEAH Harry going to the cave to visit Sirius, but instead of talking about important things like Karkaroff and Voldy and the tournament, he just can't stop talking about this cute sixth-year, and Sirius catches a glimpse of Cedric during one of the tasks and is like "ah, I see it now." He figures Harry could do worse than date a sweet Hufflepuff who is also a Triwizard champion.
(Also lmao the mental image of Harry taking Cedric to meet the parents, but he takes him to a cave with an escaped convict and a hippogriff.)
And yes, once Sirius gets his freedom, there are lots of formal dinners and meeting the Diggorys. And yes!!!! Harry using his money to spoil Cedric!!! Cedric has plenty of his own, but it brings Harry so much joy that he can't say no.
(I also can't help but give everyone babies, so I will say that the Potter-Diggory babies are spoiled rotten by both their dads AND the grandparents. Sirius is especially bad about it, and Cedric has to build a second shed out back for all the toys Sirius keeps buying the kids lmao.)

Tumblr media
Brooklyn Heights, New York City
The snow had drifted up against the patio door throughout the evening and continued to pile up as the new day began.
William looked up and gasped. "It's snowing! Look, Mama, ... loooooooook!"
Riley sauntered over to the glass door and gazed out at the beautiful sight. "It is snowing, LiLi. You are so right!"
"Can we go outside and play, Mama? ...Pweeeeeze?"
"Not yet sweetheart, it's still too early. But, maybe later today, the snow should still be falling."
William grinned, his eyes lighting up. "Yay!"
"You can show me all your favorite places outside in the snow." Liam chimed in, walking up to stand beside Riley with his coffee.
"Daddy, can you make a snowman with me?"
"Yes, I can. In fact, I'm a snowman-making expert." Riley's eyebrow shot up quickly turning to see a smirking Liam beside her.
"Really? Wow." William excitedly clapped his hands. Riley smiled warmly at William's reaction, which mirrored closely with Liam's expression of delight.
"Yes, I have a special way of making them. Do you want me to show you how?"
"Yes, Daddy, please!"
Riley giggled, shaking her head. “Snow in the Capital?”
“Not the Capital, but it was always snowing in Lythikos.”  Liam quipped back with a grin.
Liam whispered, “... and Mama can help too.” Liam smiled affectionately at Riley, softly stroking her cheek with his thumb.
“But first, I would like to show you a train set at the toy store in the city! Would you like that, William?"
"Yes, yes, yes! I want to go see the train." William excitedly bounced in his chair. Liam grinned, captivated by the joy in his son's expression.
"Alright, let's finish our breakfast, and then we can get ready to go. We can also pick up some hot cocoa and marshmallows along the way."
William squealed in delight. “Oh yes, Daddy.”
Riley’s shoulders shook uncontrollably, with her laughter barely held.
“You are having way too much fun, Li.”
Liam bashfully looked at Riley and winked. “I will have Bastien prepare the car. We can go as soon as it gets here.”
“Okay, little man. Let’s get you ready to go.” Riley walked to pick up William from his toddler chair as Liam made the arrangements.
***
After visiting F.A.O. Schwarz in Rockerfeller center, as promised, Liam took Riley and William for a hot cocoa treat while admiring the huge Christmas tree in the center court.
As they walked along the bustling streets of New York, Liam could not help but smile at how much fun his son was having, and truth be told, so was he. They had visited the toy store, where Liam had bought him a set of toy trains, and stealthily selected more toys for Christmas morning for William.
William was in awe of the trains, and he had insisted on carrying the bag personally all the way to the café by himself.
As they entered, the waitress smiled warmly at them, and Riley was grateful for the privacy that being with the King afforded. She did not need any extra attention from onlookers.
"Good afternoon, folks. What can I get for you?"
Liam turned to Riley, "we will all have hot cocoa, with whipped cream and marshmallows."
“That sounds delicious …yes, please.” Riley agreed.
The waitress nodded, "you got it."
As she walked away, Liam turned to Riley, "thank you, Riley."
"For what?"
"For letting me be part of William's life. I now know that I can't imagine not having him in my life."
"I'm glad, Li. He's a very special little person."
"He is. Just like... his mother."
Riley blushed, "you're sweet."
"Not as sweet as you."
"Stop, Li," Riley laughed, shaking her head.
"Hey, I have an idea. Why don't we go to the park after this? We can build a snowman."
"That sounds wonderful. LiLi will love it."
"… and later, I was thinking just the two of us," Liam suggested, his eyes twinkling with mischief. "We have a lot of catching up to do."
"Oh...that sounds nice too." Riley smiled coyly.
The waitress returned with their drinks, and they spent the next hour talking and laughing, enjoying each other's company. When they were done, Liam paid the bill, and they headed out into the crisp, winter air.
"It's a date then?!" Liam continued to watch William.
"It's a date." Riley confirmed. “Oh, yeah?” Liam beamed.
“Yeah,” Riley confirmed, squeezing his hand.
"I meant what I said earlier, Riley. I want to be a part of your lives, both yours and William's.
As they continued to stroll, Liam reached out and took Riley's hand in his, a feeling of contentment washing over him.
"I know, Li. And we want you in our lives too."
"Good. Because now that I have you back in my life.... I want us to be a family."
"I love you too, Liam."
"Forever means nothing to me if I don't get to spend it with you."
Central park was beautiful, covered in a blanket of fresh, white snow, and Riley could not help but smile as she watched Liam playing with William. The two were building a snowman, and William was giggling and squealing with delight.
"Do you like it, William?" Liam asked, grinning.
"I love it, Daddy."
Liam's heart warmed at the sound of the word, and he scooped up his son, twirling him around. "I love it, too, LiLi."
"Daddy, look, the snowman needs arms."
"It does. What should we do?" William picked up two twigs and poked them in to its sides.
"Can we throw snowballs at the snowman nowe, Daddy?" Liam laughed.
"Of course, we can. Whatever you would like."
Liam put William down and helped him scoop up a handful of snow, showing him how to shape it into a ball. Then, they began to throw the snowballs at the snowman, laughing and enjoying each other's company.
As they played, Riley couldn't help but feel her heart swell with love and happiness. It was a sight she would never forget, and she knew that their lives together were just beginning.
"Riley, watch out!"
Riley turned to see a snowball hurtling towards her, and she ducked just in time, laughing. "Hey, that's not fair, you two!"
Liam and William looked at each other, trying to hide their giggles, and Riley picked up a handful of snow, forming a snowball.
"If you throw that snowball, you're declaring war."
Liam ducked as her snowball flew past him.
They shrieked with laughter, running around and chasing each other. As the sun began to set, Liam picked up his son and kissed his forehead and pulled Riley close.
“This is definitely going to land me on your naughty list.”
"Would that be a bad thing, Li?"
"God, no!"
Liam put William down and held his hand out for Riley, pulling her in close to his side.
"And I love you, my love," he whispered, leaning in to kiss her.
Riley melted into his kiss, savoring the moment, knowing that this was only the start.
**
Liam stood up and turned away from the fireplace after starting a warm glow, heading into the kitchen. Riley had prepared a feast of pasta, meatballs, and salad.
"Dinner's ready," she called out.
"Smells delicious."
"Hopefully, it tastes as good."
"William is fast asleep on the sofa. Let me get him into his bed."
"Okay, Liam, thank you."
They sat down and dug into their meal, both enjoying the warmth of the fire and the comfort of being together. Liam couldn't help but marvel at how normal things seemed.
As they ate, Liam cleared his throat, "I spoke to Leo earlier."
"Oh?" Riley's heart started to race, knowing that Liam will eventually have to go back home to Cordonia.
"We need to get back to the Capital."
Liam looked at Riley, his heart filled with love and sadness. "I wish I didn't have to leave you and William."
As Liam looked st Riley, his heart tightened.
"Liam, is something wrong?"
"No, everything 's fine. Just a lot on my mind."
"Me too, Li. But we'll be waiting for you here."
"I'll be back as soon as I can, I promise."
"I know."
"Wait!" Riley untangled her arms from Liam and ran to the kitchen.
When his guard appeared at the door, Liam leaned in to kiss Riley goodbye, he could not help but think about all the moments they had shared together over the past few days. It was a bittersweet moment, and he couldn't help but feel a tug at his heart.
"Ri, what are you doing?"
"Just wait, you’ll see, Li."
A few moments later, Riley returned, carrying a twig of mistletoe.
“Ahhhh, I see.” Liam watched Riley with amusement as Riley was trying to figure out a place to attach it.
"There. Now we can have our Christmas kiss."
Liam laughed, "You' dont have to bribe me, love." ...as the mistletoe twig fell to the floor.
"I know. You've mentioned it a few times."
"Well, it's true."
Liam picked up the mistletoe and held it over their heads, grinning. "My future queen."
"My king."
Liam gently wrapped his hand around her cheek as he tugged her close. They shared a passionate kiss, both of their hearts aching with the thought of separation.
"I love you, Riley. With everything that I am."
"And I love you, Liam. ....so much."
As they pulled away, Liam tucked the mistletoe in his pocket, determined to bring a piece of their love story back with him to Cordonia.
"Take care of yourself, Riley. I will be back as soon as I can."
"Stay safe, Liam."
With one final look, Liam left the brownstone, his heart heavy.
Moroccan Royal Palace
The heat from the Moroccan sun was stifling, as Madeleine sat on the outdoor terrace reading the latest news from Cordonia. Looking up, she saw a familiar face walking towards her.
"Father ..." Duke Godfrey had a grim look on his face.
"The council has just received word that King Liam has been spotted in America with a woman and a child. He has a son."
Madeleine's eyes widened, "with her? That cannot be true."
"Apparently, it is. You know what this means, Madeleine."
"Yes. Our plan has failed. We must change course.
"How do you propose we do that?"
"Liam has made his choice, and now we must make ours. There is only one way forward."
"And what is the next step in our plan, father?"
Madeleine smirked, "I couldn't agree more."
"We must ensure that no one stands in the way of the succession of the true heir, your son."
"How do you suggest we do that?"
"It seems we will have to remove them from the equation. Permanently."
Madeleine smiled coldly, "I've been waiting a long time for this. Let's get started."
As the sun set over the Moroccan desert, Madeleine stood on the terrace, surveying the landscape, thinking.
Brooklyn Heights, New York City
Riley was startled when Bastien showed up at her door, but she couldn't say she was surprised. After everything that had happened, she had expected Liam to take extra precautions.
"Your Majesty has sent a team of security personnel to protect you and young William."
"Oh. I see.
"I apologize if it's an intrusion, but the King wants to ensure your safety and that of the Crown Prince.."
"It's not an intrusion, and I appreciate the gesture. Thank you, Bas."
What Riley wasn't expecting was the added security of Interpol.
Leo had also arranged for his Interpol contact, Damien Nazario, to oversee Riley and William's security when Liam has to return to Cordonia as an added precaution.
When Riley opened the door, she was greeted by a tall, muscular man with dark hair and a serious expression.
"You must be Riley. I'm Damien Nazario. Your security detail."
Cordonian Royal Palace
He shook his head, trying to focus on the task at hand. He had a lot to discuss with Olivia, and he didn't have time to get lost in his thoughts.
As Liam stepped off the plane, he couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. He had missed Cordonia, but there was a big part of him that wished he could have brought back Riley and William with him.
But it was too early for that.
Something felt off.
As he entered the palace, he was greeted by a familiar face.
"Your Majesty, it's good to see you," Olivia said, smiling.
"Likewise, Olivia. Shall we head to my office?"
"Of course."
As they entered his office, Liam's eyes landed on a letter that had been placed on his desk.
As they walked through the halls of the palace, Liam could not shake the feeling that something was wrong. It was a strange sensation, and he couldn't quite put his finger on it.
"What's this?"
Olivia's eyes widened, "I have no idea. I didn't see anyone leave anything."
Liam picked up the letter, and as he read its contents, his blood ran cold.

My lovely Kistune (Yae Miko x kistune!reader
Tumblr media
A/N: This is from the polls I made a while ago, I'm finally delivering. I'm going to do my best to keep it gender neutral.
(NOT PROOFREAD)
~~
"My love, why do you continue to stare at the sakura at this time in the evening?" Yae Miko, love of your life, Lady Guuji of the Grand Narukami Shrine, took a seat next to you holding sake. "They're lovely this time of year." The fall breeze stirred a few petals in the direction of your hand. "Reminds me of home." You reminisced the past, days with the youkai, as a young kistune. "Darling, you know things can't stay the same forever. Time is inevitable, things have to change." She said, taking a sip of her sake. Your ear flicked as you stared at the shrine maidens carrying on with their business down below. You loved your perch atop the shrine building facing the Sacred Sakura. It was your favorite view...After staring at Yae, you decided to scratch that thought. "A kistune can hope." You replied sadly. "I miss them." She frowned. Today was a special day for your clan, however it was centuries ago since the last time you were able to celebrate it. "It's not too late you know," She started. "We could always start the celebrations now if you'd like." You looked over at her. Damn she was gorgeous in the light of the sunset. She glowed in the fading warm rays. "Oh Lady Guuji, how I do love you." She smiled softly at you. "It's about time you do. I didn't spend all these centuries with you for nothing, my dear." She pointed her nose towards the sky in pride. "Tell me my lovely kistune, which celebration would you like to partake in first?" She questioned. You felt a smile tugging at your lips. ~~
Bonus Ending: "You want me to do what?" Ei asked her best friend curiously. "It's not that hard of a task Ei." Yae turned her head to gaze in your direction. "I simply want them to feel more at home." Ei nodded in understanding. "A national holiday it is." Ei declared. Yae couldn't help but beam with happiness. "Wonderful! (Y/N)!" You pause your conversation with the Tenshukaku guard. "Yes?" "Guess what I just did." She smirked. She was going to be sure you wouldn't be able to thank her enough.

The original "Independence Day" wasn’t the day that the USA became independent from England. It was the day that the wording of the Declaration of Independence was officially finalized and the document printed. The Declaration was mostly a list of grievances against the king, which added up to the signers rejecting his authority on behalf of their colonies/ states. But this was still a one-sided document, not an agreement.
They were at war at the time. The war didn’t end when they released the document. They were still at war for over another 5 years before the British surrendered. And there was no formal treaty officially recognizing the USA as an independent nation for another 2 more years after that.
So what I’m getting at is that Independence Day was never a day that anyone gained independence or gained rights or "became free" in any way. It was a day that people officially declared their INTENTION to become independent at any cost and to share their platform with the world.
So no matter how you feel about the concept of the holiday of "Independence Day," the mythos of "Founding Fathers" or whether the establishment of the USA deserves to be celebrated in the first place or any of that stuff, I feel all that is very much fitting for this year’s July 4. Fighting for something that doesn’t seem immediately within grasp, pushing back against the authority of leaders who you feel don’t have your best interests at heart. Those are the most important elements of July 4 to me. So I do understand those posts going around like, "Independence Day is canceled due to a lack of independence." But for me personally, I do feel those principles-- and many of the Americans today embodying them-- deserve a little celebration.

Hangover starters
"Ugh, my head is pounding. I shouldn't have had that last drink."
"I feel like a train wreck. How are we going to survive today?"
"Why did we think it was a good idea to drink so much last night?"
"I can barely remember anything. My liver is definitely not happy with me."
"I need a gallon of coffee to survive this day."
"Coffee won't be enough. We need a miracle cure for this hangover."
"I can't believe we have to be functional human beings today."
"We're in for a rough ride. Maybe we can blame it on bad sushi or something."
"I can't even look at food right now. The thought of it makes me nauseous."
"I never want to see another drink or greasy food for the rest of my life."
"Do you remember anything we did last night?"
"I hope we didn't embarrass ourselves too much."
"I swear, I'm never drinking again."
"We need some serious self-control."
"Is it possible to die from a hangover?"
"Let's just survive the day and promise ourselves we'll never do this again."
"I can't believe we have responsibilities today. I just want to crawl back into bed."
"We should have stuck to our 'one drink' rule."
"We never learn. Now we're paying the price."
"I feel like I've aged 10 years overnight."
"Do you think anyone can smell the alcohol on us?"
"I can't believe we thought shots were a good idea."
[text]: Ugh, my head is killing me. Did we really have that many shots last night?
[text]: Can we declare today a national holiday for hungover people? I need to recover ASAP.
[text]: I feel like a zombie right now. Any chance you can bring me some coffee and a big plate of greasy food?
[text]: Remember when we thought that last round of tequila shots was a good idea? My liver definitely regrets it.
[text]: I'm pretty sure I'm still drunk. How did we even end up at that karaoke bar?
[text]: Is it too early to start counting down the hours until it's acceptable to take a nap?
[text]: I just saw a picture from last night. Who let us dance on the tables?
[text]: I'm convinced that hangovers were invented to punish us for having fun.
[text]: The sound of a doorbell right now feels like an explosion in my head. Please be quiet!
[text]: I'm contemplating crawling to the fridge, but I'm not sure I have the energy. Send help!
[text]: Water, Advil, and a dark room are the holy trinity of hangover remedies. I'm practicing all three right now.
[text]: If I could choose any superpower right now, it would be the ability to rewind time and undo last night's mistakes.
[text]: My dignity is still recovering.
[text]: Can we make a pact never to touch alcohol again? At least until the next weekend.
[text]: I've never appreciated a good slice of pizza more than I do in this very moment. It's the ultimate hangover cure.
[text]: The sunlight is my sworn enemy right now. It's like a thousand daggers piercing through my eyelids.

Other Events During Solarpunk Aesthetic Week
What? You mean to say there's other stuff going on during Solarpunk Aesthetic Week?
Yes! While we didn't want to clash with the usual hosting time for Solarpunk Action Week, it's impossible to host an event without other things also going on! Let's highlight just a few other things that are happening this week, so they can maybe inspire some of what you do for Solarpunk Aesthetic Week!
Pollinator Week 2023 actually takes place June 19th - 25th just like our event!
"Pollinator Week is an annual celebration in support of pollinator health that was initiated and is managed by Pollinator Partnership. It is a time to raise awareness for pollinators and spread the word about what we can do to protect them. The great thing about Pollinator Week is that you can celebrate and get involved any way you like! Popular events include planting for pollinators, hosting garden tours, participating in online bee and butterfly ID workshops, and so much more."
Feel free to check their site here to learn more! Maybe make some pollinator-inspired art and take some biodiversity-boosting actions to celebrate!
Juneteenth/Juneteenth National Independence Day is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, celebrated on the anniversary of an order proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas on June 19th 1865 (two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued). You may see and hear of public readings, street fairs, cookouts, parades, and more celebrating this event in the US--especially since it was officially declared a federal holiday in 2021, meaning its an official day off from school and work for many people now.
Always, but especially on this day, consider the important role and contributions of African Americans and other Black groups have had and will continue to have on history, punk spaces, and the present and future of Solarpunk!
Summer Solstice is June 21st in the Northern Hemisphere, marking the official beginning of the summer season! This day symbolizes the zenith of the sun's position in the sky, and the longest day of the year.
We're called Solarpunks for a reason! And coinciding with this date was totally purposeful on our parts. Let the sun inspire your works--whether it be thinking up solar panel concepts, painting a sunny meadow scene, or just imbuing your work with the bright and blazing energy of our brightest star, go forth and create!
Winter Solstice is also June 21st in the Southern Hemisphere, marking the official beginning of the winter season! This day symbolizes the death and subsequent rebirth of the sun, and is the shortest day and longest night of the year.
When we visualize Solarpunk, we tend to think of bright and sunny spring and summer days, with lush green growth all around. But what would Solarpunk look like in the fall and winter? Let's start talking about it, changing up our color palettes and creating! And if it's wintertime for you right now, tell us about how you're solarpunking even in the colder months!
World Music Day, also known as Fête de la Musique, takes place on June 23rd and celebrates the universal language of music. This day originated in France in 1982, aiming to encourage both amateur and professional musicians to showcase their talents in public spaces, while also providing free access to concerts and performances for the public. This observance promotes the importance of music in society and celebrates its cultural diversity.
Music often plays a major role in people's lives today, and I see it being no different in a Solarpunk future. Whether you're writing up song lyrics or making chill beats, or listening and contributing to our collaborative Solarpunk playlist, or anything music related--let's take a moment to consider the power of music to spread messages and hope!
June 25th is the last day of Solarpunk Aesthetic Week, and is the Day of the Seafarer! Day of the Seafarer aims to recognize the invaluable contribution of seafarers to the world economy, trade, and well-being of our people. The International Maritime Organization established this day in 2010, and is observed through various activities like ceremonies, celebrations, panel discussions, and workshops.
When it comes to thinking of Solarpunk societies, its important to consider our relationship with the sea and people who traverse it. In addition, the subsect Lunarpunk often has an association with communities living in close ties with the water--consider looking into it as we celebrate Solarpunk Aesthetic Week--there's all kinds of inspiring content out there, and we can always contribute more!
Is there more we're forgetting? Want to share the way you celebrate a particular event? Sound off and let us know--we'd love to hear about other related events and how you celebrate them!

The Fourth of July
Typically this is one of my favorite holidays, but tonight I find it difficult to celebrate knowing that We the People have been conquered by our own government and complacency.
Home of the free, land if the brave??? A Usurper sits in our White House and we light firecrackers as if we are something to be feared??? We fly our flags with pride never understanding that the flag should be flown upsidedown as this is a nation under extreme duress. We drink and eat hotdogs while patting our children on the back as if we are leaving them an inheritance that they can be proud of. Ignoring the fact that our children will be little more than indentured servants at best. Slaves more likely. We bost of the Declaration of Independence while making ourselves dependent on A STOLEN GOVERNMENT. For $300 a month or a guaranteed income we trade away our Liberty.
A celebration of the past, but that's not who we are today. Cowards, slaves, afraid to stand for what is rightly ours, but we will drink that beer and talk the big talk tonight as if we really were free men. Tomorrow we will go back into the fields and pick the cotton fir the man. Tomorrow our head will hurt for all the beer we consumed tonight, but there will be another pain there. The pain of knowing that we didn't do what needed to be done to secure the blessings of Liberty for our posterity.
God bless you cowards. I'm going to bed. My head hurts and I haven't drank any beer.

you don't save the world by relaxing, a ficlet set on lofaf.
in which dave would like jade to take a break, and jade would like dave to leave. those frogs are not going to breed themselves, after all.
----
“Hey,” Dave says as he walks into the large room. He glances around, first watching the many, many frogs hopping around the room, and then at the mess that has begun to pile up. In the middle of it all is Jade, who is hunched over the main console, frantically pressing buttons and muttering to herself.
Dave studies her for a moment. Her hair is frizzy and unkempt, and he’s pretty sure she’s wearing the same clothes he saw her in five days ago.
She clearly didn’t hear him. “Hey,” he repeats, a little louder. Jade jumps, letting out a small shriek.
“Hi,” she says tiredly, but doesn’t turn to face him, still pressing buttons. Click, click, click. He moves to stand over her shoulder, watching her press various different buttons that make absolutely no sense to him.
“Are you good,” he asks, knowing the answer. He wishes she would turn to face him.
A slight pause in the button pressing. “Yeah, yeah I’m fine.” Lie. Her voice is just a little too cheerful-fake. “Just busy, yaknow? Frogs suck. I want to strangle their cute little faces.” Dave knows this song and dance well; deflect with humor in the attempt that he will cease and desist. Dave is not fooled - he invented the fine art of bullshittery. He ignores the silent go away please and says instead: “You look terrible.”
Jade snorts, shoulders stiffening slightly. “Thanks, Dave. It’s not like I’m trying to save the world or anything.” Underneath the sarcasm, he can hear the silent undertone; I’m doing it all alone. What if I can’t do it in time?
“No, yeah, it’s just a normal. Uh. What day is it.” He pauses for a moment. Sure, he could just guess. Maybe his fancy time-player powers could tell him. He’d rather make Jade laugh. “You know what,” he continues, going the funny route, as he always does. “Days don’t exist anymore. I’m declaring today Daveurday.” Jade lets out a small laugh. Strider 1, Harley 0, Dave thinks. “The best day ever,” she agrees.
“Yeah, yeah. It’s a national holiday now. It lasts, uhh. Two daylight cycles, and everyone’s gotta wear shades and praise me.” Jade turns to face him, meeting his eyes for the first time. Bright green like her island used to be. Dave internally winces - there are bags under her eyes, and her glasses are crooked. When was the last time she ate? He’s afraid to find out. “Oh great supreme overlord Dave, please spare me. I am but a mere uncool mortal,” she says, tone worshipful, although he knows she is anything but.
“As your supreme overlord I command you to take a break,” Dave replies imperiously, tilting his chin up and looking down at her. Jade laughs sharply, eyes flicking away from his and back to the console, where the buttons remain unpressed. One is flashing red, almost accusingly - why haven’t you pressed me, it seems to say. She presses a seemingly unrelated one on the other side of the board. It stops flashing. Her back is to him again, he notes, and knows she is trying to hide the fact that she barely has it together. News flash, it’s painfully obvious.
After a moment, she says, “I’ll take a break-” she pauses, “I’ll take a break when I’m dead, I suppose.” And Dave realizes, it’s not just this. She hasn’t taken a true break since, he doesn’t know when? After all, she saw their futures in the clouds of Prospit. Had carried that alone. She’s more of a hero than he will ever be, he thinks.
He decides on the next best thing: “Fine then, let me help you.” “No, I got this,” she says, “I’m the space player, right. This is my job. Yours is to time travel and make more annoying clones of yourself.”
“My job is also to make sure you’re like. Sleeping? And eating? Those are kind of important, Jade,” he argues. “It’s Daveurday. You gotta obey the Dave. And the Dave says to take a break.”
Another long moment, during which Dave watches her intently, knowing she’ll give in. She always does. It’s the Strider charm. Nobody can resist the shades. Strider 2, Harley 0, he thinks, as she sighs, leaning back in her chair. After a moment, she turns halfway to side-eye him. “Fine. But only if you shut up.”
“Me, shut up? Never.” He says, faking offense, and crouches down next to the console. “Now show me what all these buttons do, Miss Harley.”

In the Air by Christopher Nevinson, 1917. Lithograph.
Today is Armistice Day, commemorated every year on 11 November to mark the end of the First World War and the armistice signed.
In this work by Christopher Nevinson the abstract patchwork of fields is laid out under the wing of a military aircraft, the sharp angles of the composition emphasising the dizzying height of the plane. During the war, the world was being seen from entirely new angles, inspiring artists to experiment and to depict landscape in new, unexpected ways.
LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
November 11, 2023
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
NOV 12, 2023
In 1918, at the end of four years of World War I’s devastation, leaders negotiated for the guns in Europe to fall silent once and for all on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. It was not technically the end of the war, which came with the Treaty of Versailles. Leaders signed that treaty on June 28, 1919, five years to the day after the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand set off the conflict. But the armistice declared on November 11 held, and Armistice Day became popularly known as the day “The Great War,” which killed at least 40 million people, ended.
In November 1919, President Woodrow Wilson commemorated Armistice Day, saying that Americans would reflect on the anniversary of the armistice “with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…."
But Wilson was disappointed that the soldiers’ sacrifices had not changed the nation’s approach to international affairs. The Senate, under the leadership of Republican Henry Cabot Lodge of Massachusetts—who had been determined to weaken Wilson as soon as the imperatives of the war had fallen awayrefused to permit the United States to join the League of Nations, Wilson’s brainchild: a forum for countries to work out their differences with diplomacy, rather than resorting to bloodshed.
On November 10, 1923, just four years after he had established Armistice Day, former President Wilson spoke to the American people over the new medium of radio, giving the nation’s first live, nationwide broadcast.
“The anniversary of Armistice Day should stir us to a great exaltation of spirit,” he said, as Americans remembered that it was their example that had “by those early days of that never to be forgotten November, lifted the nations of the world to the lofty levels of vision and achievement upon which the great war for democracy and right was fought and won.”
But he lamented “the shameful fact that when victory was won,…chiefly by the indomitable spirit and ungrudging sacrifices of our own incomparable soldiers[,] we turned our backs upon our associates and refused to bear any responsible part in the administration of peace, or the firm and permanent establishment of the results of the war—won at so terrible a cost of life and treasure—and withdrew into a sullen and selfish isolation which is deeply ignoble because manifestly cowardly and dishonorable.”
Wilson said that a return to engagement with international affairs was “inevitable”; the U.S. eventually would have to take up its “true part in the affairs of the world.”
Congress didn’t want to hear it. In 1926 it passed a resolution noting that since November 11, 1918, “marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed,” the anniversary of that date “should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations.”
In 1938, Congress made November 11 a legal holiday to be dedicated to world peace.
But neither the “war to end all wars” nor the commemorations of it, ended war.
Just three years after Congress made Armistice Day a holiday for peace, American armed forces were fighting a second world war, even more devastating than the first. The carnage of World War II gave power to the idea of trying to stop wars by establishing a rules-based international order. Rather than trying to push their own boundaries and interests whenever they could gain advantage, countries agreed to abide by a series of rules that promoted peace, economic cooperation, and security.
The new international system provided forums for countries to discuss their differences—like the United Nations, founded in 1945—and mechanisms for them to protect each other, like the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), established in 1949, which has a mutual defense pact that says any attack on a NATO country will be considered an attack on all of them.
In the years since, those agreements multiplied and were deepened and broadened to include more countries and more ties. While the U.S. and other countries sometimes fail to honor them, their central theory remains important: no country should be able to attack a neighbor, slaughter its people, and steal its lands at will. This concept preserved decades of relative peace compared to the horrors of the early twentieth century, but it is a concept that is currently under attack as autocrats increasingly reject the idea of a rules-based international order and claim the right to act however they wish.
In 1954, to honor the armed forces of wars after World War I, Congress amended the law creating Armistice Day by striking out the word “armistice” and putting “veterans” in its place. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, himself a veteran who had served as the supreme commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe and who had become a five-star general of the Army before his political career, later issued a proclamation asking Americans to observe Veterans Day:
“[L]et us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.”

Thanksgiving myth
Trigger Warning - Genocide, Death, Slavery.
Written by Laura Casey.
The Myth - In 1620, Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock and friended the Wampanoag, who showed the colonizers how to harvest and survive the brutal NE winter. This “thankfulness” culminated into a “celebration” in 1621 between the Wampanoag and Pilgrims.
The truth - English colonizers landed in the vicinity of (what is now) Massachusetts in 1614, taking the regional Indigenous as slaves, selling them for 200 shillings on European markets and leaving behind small pox and other European disease.
By the time Puritans arrived in Plymouth, entire nations of Indigenous tribes were already decimated or extinct because of Europe’s lust to conquer. Within 4 days of landing, the Puritans robbed graves and stole crops.
Within 15 years, the Puritans were at war with the Pequot nation. And by 1641 the first scalp bounty was placed. Puritans at this point (and through out) were determined to eliminate any Indigenous Nations and take their land.  They held massacres in order to achieve and then celebrated EVERY SINGLE TIME with “Thanksgiving”.
It became such a TRADITION to celebrate the genocide in every puritan town that George Washington recognized ”the need” to make it a holiday and declared the fourth Thursday in November as “Thanksgiving Day”.
Then, Lincoln made it a legal national holiday on the same day he sent troops to march on Lakota Nation in Minnesota. This is what you celebrate. This is what colonizers on Turtle Island “celebrate” when they sit with family and friends today.
Genocide.  Murder.  Slavery.
So instead, we remember today as a Day of Mourning. We stand in solidarity with the thousands of Indigenous tribes, nations, and federations who still exist today.
We will remember lives lost and we will celebrate the strength and resilience of the first people of this land — because they are still here and thriving, living and loving, building and growing (so stop talking about Native tribes in the past tense) — and they have done it with grace and humility while surviving genocide.
We will hold space for our local Tribes (who do not have federal protections or sovereignty). We will support local Wabanaki businesses, we will cook local food (today it is Three Sisters, cornbread and maple syrup pie made with Passamaquoddy Maple), we will provide mutual aid, we will continue to call our state and federal representatives demanding support for the Alliance (and their legal sovereignty) and we will continue centering Indigenous voices.
Because whether we want to admit it or not — it’s all interconnected — the environment, the climate crisis, the housing crisis, the water crisis, the healthcare crisis, the food crisis, social norms/mores, etc…all of it.
So…enjoy time with family.  But share the true story and stop celebrating American violence (WE can break this ugly cycle folks). This is Turtle Island.
I live on Wabanaki/Nanrantsouak land. I acknowledge that today’s holiday and celebrations are rooted in violence, harm, genocide and erasure.

Imagine you woke up one morning and turned on the news and the report was like "Joe biden has killed a man in broad daylight." And it cuts to him on stage about to give a speech, blood still on his hands and jacket, and everyone is booing and screaming. And he starts saying some shit like
"my fellow Americans, I understand that you just witnessed me kill a man and throw him into the compost bin. But that's just how we did things in Scranton" and everyone just kinda nods along like. Ok. Maybe this isn't so bad.
And then he says "today should be a day of celebration, not Mourning. I declare this a national holiday and everyone gets the day off all day." And everyone clapped and cheered.
His wife runs on stage and starts yelling and screaming like "no! Joe! This isn't you! You can't get away with this!" But then he drags her kicking and screaming straight to jail. And everyone was kinda like. Eh. So long as she's out by tomorrow morning I don't care.

Good morning Crane family. Since today is Thanksgiving, my question is: how do you guys currently celebrate this wondrous holiday? Also Ichabod, how would you have celebrated Thanksgiving back in your time?
Good morning, Deare Reader!
Thanksgiving, as a holiday, did not Exist in the 18th Century. We had traditional Harvest Festivals, and oure Ministers and Governours would occasionally declare Days of Thanksgiving, but it was not an Annual Holiday. Checking the Wiki-pedia, I find that the Holidaye was celebrated Informally in the Young United States from the War of Independence onward, but was nott made an Official National Holiday until 1863, by President Abraham Lincoln.
Days of Thanksgiving were held after Greate Disasters had ended, & generally, we spent the entire day at Church, singing Happy Songs of Thanksgiving.
In late Septembre, the English celebrated Harvest Home, when the Harveste was all gathered in. I have told Abby about it, and she thinkes it quite Pagan, though we did not feel so at the Time. There was much singing, and decorating of the Village with boughs. The final sheaf of grain from the field was shaped into a Corn Dolly, upon whiche was poured Rain Water, and this Dolly was saved until Spring Planting, to ensure the Fertility of the Fields.
Today's celebrations are much Simpler. In fact, they are even more simple since Abby decided she could not Stand to cook a Thanksgiving Dinner herself this year, and I suggested we Do as some of our Neighbours, and order our Turkey and Side-Dishes at the Farmers' Market. Little Grace helped me to bake Cookies, and we are Prepared for the Descent of our friendes and family upon our House.
I wish a Happy Daye to all, no Matter what you celebrate,
And remain,
Yr humble Servant,
Ichabod Crane

National Chili Day
A hearty meal full of beans and savory meat, topped off with sour cream, cheese, and diced onions — warm, spicy comfort.
Some like it hot, some like it mild, some like it on top of a baked potato and some prefer it with or without beans – but however it is most appreciated, National Chili Day is the perfect excuse for millions of spicy food fans all around the world to chow down on a bowl of this delicious fiery favorite.
History of National Chili Day
Though many people believe chili originated purely in Mexico, modern thinking suggests that it was probably truly created in Texas and is a blend of Native American, Spanish, and Mexican cuisines. This claim is supported by the fact that the first-ever written reference to chili occurred in the city of San Antonio, Texas in 1828. This is just one of the many delicious varieties of food that fall into the category of Tex-Mex.
However, one legend dates chili back a little further, stating that some immigrants who came from the Canary Islands brought the recipe with them to San Antonio when they settled there in the 1700s. This was before the name “chili” came to be and it was simply referred to as “Spanish stew”.
Eventually, by the 1880s, a popular way to eat the dish in San Antonio was by picking up a “bowl o’ red” at a chili stand in an open-air stall, usually run by a “chili queen”. The popularity of chili began to spread throughout the US, and it was given a huge boost when it was featured at the 1893 World’s Fair which took place in Chicago, Illinois.
The dish that is now known as simply “chili” has, in the past, often been referred to as “chili con carne”, which just means chili with meat. Of course, today, many people make it without meat, and it can easily even be made into a vegan dish with no animal products of any kind.
Some people do tend to spell it differently, depending on where they are from. Most Americans will include only one “l” in the word, while some British folks and people from other parts of the world may add an additional letter to spell it “chilli”. But no matter how it is spelled, this is certainly a tasty dish that is worthy of celebration!
National Chili Day Timeline
1828
First written description of Chili
J. C. Clopper writes, after visiting San Antonio, Texas, about “a kind of hash with nearly as many peppers as there are pieces of meat – this is all stewed together.”
1880s
Chili stands become popular in San Antonio
Women who are called “Chili Queens” set up trailers or carts to serve spicy bowls of beans and meat (chili con carne) to workers and passersby on the street, where small tables, seats and lanterns were set up. These last until the 1930s when the health department shuts them down.
1896
Chili powder is invented in Texas
German immigrant William Gebhardt creates a way to pulverize dried chiles using a meat grinder, which eventually becomes the product known as Gebhardt’s Eagle Chili Powder. It’s a critical ingredient in Chili.
1960s
An American president loves chili
Lydon Johnson, president of the United States from 1963-1969, declares that Texas Chili is the best: “One of the first things I do when I get home to Texas is to have a bowl of red. There is simply nothing better.”
1977
Chili becomes the state dish of Texas
As the continuation of its association with Texas, the state’s legislature names Chili the state dish.
How to Celebrate National Chili Day
Though not an official public holiday, National Chili Day is widely celebrated with many restaurants offering free samples of their own unique recipes. Others mark the day with a huge chili party for family and friends – or simply make sure they have a big bowl of chili for lunch!
Try out these fun ideas for celebrating the day:
Make a Big Pot of Chili
Even people who don’t really do much cooking can make a pot of chili to enjoy with a whole group of friends. It really is one of those meals that allows pretty much everything to be thrown into a pot and simmered while the flavors meld together.
A classic chilli recipe usually consists of a protein (often meat as well as beans), some sauce (usually tomato sauce), some veggies (corn, onion and diced tomatoes are typical) and spices for flavor (chili powder, garlic, cayenne pepper, onion powder and paprika). Toss in some jalapenos or other chili peppers for a little bit of kick. Let the whole thing simmer for a while and enjoy!
Learn Some Fun Facts About Chili
Celebrate the day and impress friends by spouting off interesting tidbits about this delicious dish. Get started with these, and then do a bit of internet research to add in a few more, just for fun:
Lyndon B. Johnson, United States President from 1963-1969, was a huge lover of chili and named his favorite recipe after his ranch in Texas, Pedernales River Chili. Americans were so fond of it that his wife, Lady Bird Johnson, had the recipe printed up on cards and mailed out from the White House.
In 1977, lobbyists worked to convince the state legislature to call chilli the official state food of Texas.
In the late 1890s, it was possible to buy a bowl of chili off of the back of a wagon for a mere 5 cents. This even came with an unlimited number of crackers to go along with it–and usually a glass of water too.
The first chili cook-off is recorded to have taken place in 1952 at the State Fair of Texas located in Dallas. But another story says that the first one took place in 1967 in Terlingua, Texas, where no winner was declared–as it was a tie between a native Texan and a person from New York!
Enjoy a Chili Contest
Chili is a food that people love to gather around–and it’s great for competing too! Whether participating in a chili cookoff that pits top chefs against each other, or a chili-eating contest where the winner consumes the most chili in a short amount of time, this is a dish that can be filled with fun.
Today’s chili cook offs can get pretty serious, where contestants often use ingredients that will help them to create the most intense flavor possible. They also try to be unique, using interesting meats such as sausage, turkey or even venison, as well accessing a variety of chili peppers to create just the right amount of heat.
Get into the competitive spirit by participating, or just enjoy watching and rooting for a favorite person to win. Can’t find a chili contest in the local area? Don’t let that get in the way–go ahead and start one in honor of National Chili Day!
Get Creative with Chili Recipes
Getting involved in this day can be a delightful culinary experience! Take things far beyond the ordinary by including unique and interesting ingredients into that pot of chili. While the classic recipes are certainly amazing, these types of ideas get things moving to a whole other level:
Chorizo Sweet Potato Chili. Give that pot of chili a delightful twist using a paleo friendly recipe that is a quick fix (can be on the table in around 30 minutes!). Chopped vegetables and some spicy chorizo sausage are flavors that meld together deliciously.
Short Rib Black Bean Chili. Beginning with short ribs as the protein base, this chili is slow cooked with the bones to add tons of flavor and depth. Mildly spicy, the black beans round out the taste into something delightfully delicious.
Spicy Chocolate Chili (Vegan). Sweet potatoes, maple syrup and cocoa powder work together in this recipe in a surprising way. Filled with beans and veggies, then topped with cilantro, lime and pumpkin seeds, this unique recipe will keep the whole family coming back for more!
Kale and Barley Chili. Keep things super healthy with this chili that is filled with healthy greens. Add some white beans in for extra protein and bulk!
National Chili Day FAQs
When is National Chili Day?
National Chili Day is observed on the fourth Thursday of February, which is the perfect time of year to enjoy a spicy bowl of deliciousness.
Where was Chili invented?
Most likely, the origins of the dish known today as chili came from the southwestern parts of the United States, particularly Texas. Some stories say that the idea was brought from the Canary Islands in the 1700s.
Is Chili a soup?
Because it doesn’t usually use stock or broth, Chili isn’t necessarily considered to be a soup. Actually, it would be considered to be more of a stew because it is thicker, with a more solid base.
Is Chili healthy?
Depending on how it is made, Chili can be a rather healthy meal. It contains nutrients such as protein, fiber, iron, Vitamin C and more. Of course, it’s healthier if it is made with lean meat and less fat.
How to make Chili?
Most Chili recipes will include the basic ingredients of ground beef, beans, onions, tomato sauce, spices and tomatoes. The ingredients are cooked together for some time to allow the flavors to meld together.

I've been trying to bully myself for Fucking Hours into doing any of the things I meant to do today (and every day for the last several months) and I was feeling really bad about it, but then I was like, hey, you sent that email this morning, you didn't do nothing. And really, I think maybe they should throw me a parade and declare 'Art Sent That Email Day' a national holiday, actually.
