Merry Christmas to all! Christmas is one of the happiest times of year. For most of us, Christmas brings back memories of Christmases past, the Christmases of our childhood, when joy reigned and wishes came true. The fragrance of fresh fir, the glow of candles, the tinkle of little Christmas bells, the glitter and glisten of decorations which brighten everything at this time of year, the very colors of green and red and snowy white – how can the heart not smile with joy? And the songs! Yes, they can get tiresome, but I can turn the radio off. It’s Christmas, after all! A special time. A happy time. I am not a Christian, but I enjoy Christmas. I love to do all the things one traditionally does at Christmas: I write to old friends, bake cookies, wander the malls where people are shopping, buy gifts for those I love. I love to sing the old carols. I get out the story “A Bavarian Christmas” and reread it, because the Bavarians (among whom I spent one of my most wonderful Christmases) make such a big production of Christmas. And the story of the inn with no room, the Magi, the shepherds, the angels singing about the baby king – what a beautiful tale! We (my atheist family and I) put up a tree, set up the nativity scene with the baby Jesus, put the three Magi statues on the mantlepiece, put the angel on top of the tree, and Santa and the elves all around, and create the magic of Christmas. It is a wonderful tradition, a beautiful custom. But I am always amused at this time of year by letters to the editor or newspaper editorials urging us all to return to the “true” or “real” meaning of the coming holiday season. The author is usually a devout Christian and is assuming that the meaning of the celebration is indicated by the “Christ” in its now most common name, “Christmas.” The implication is that it is Christ and Christian theology which makes Christmas meaningful. Nothing could be further from the historical truth... In elementary on a certain grade level, we used to use our free time to read some books in the reading corner. I usually read the historical ones more often and would read again and again. I explored more in the world history through articles and documentations. I like history because it builds empathy through studying the past lives and compelling events. My interests are more on reality than fiction, because I know something have happen in some point in time. We humans aren't perfect, that's why history exist so that we can learn from our past mistakes. To truly understand the current present and make changes in the future it's important to study into history. History focuses on investigating past civilizations, people, and events that by their very nature shaped our world today. It's because of its largely capacity for providing context, perspective ,and perception of our past events that makes studying history so important. By understanding successes and failures made by our previous generations we are able to know how to handle modern day problems with knowledge gained through hindsight awareness. For instance, insights useful for tackling current economic issues by studying the Great Depression (1929-1939) while studying the civil rights movement (1954-1968) could point out methods of fighting against discrimination and inequality. It can provides us perspective. History allows us to see how things have changed over time and how much progress we have made. It would be hard to understand the advancement made in gender equality and the significance of maintaining advocacy for change without knowledge of this historical problem. The significance of studying of our ancestors is to resonates deeply with our identity and understand of our social community. It enables us to establish connections with our roots and make sense of our culture. Acknowledging the challenges and triumphs of our forefathers persues an admiration for the customs and practices passed down through generations. To gain insight into a society's attitudes, principles, and ethics.By diving into the past, we can predict potential disasters and can plan ahead. Investigating previous pandemics can benefit future epidemic preparation and responses. The study of previous environmental disasters has the potential to enhance our capabilities of how to solve climate change. In conclusion, history is a key element of our lives. It gives us with context, view points, identity, and insights. By looking at the past, we can have a clear and greater understanding of our present and plan for a brighter future. Studying is a must, to make sure that we learn from the mistakes of the past and create a better world for future generations.

Coming up in my cottage garden this month - a favourite of mine - snakes-head Fritillaries. This Spring bulb has had a chequered past with those who believe it to be native to Britain and those who favour a non-native status on account of the lack of cultural references in folklore, art, literature and architecture prior to 1736. It has therefore been (grudgingly to some) re-classed as a neophyte, having thought to have been introduced to botanical gardens for ornamental reasons and then managing to “jump the garden wall”. Their story reminded me of a BBC “You’re Dead To Me” history/comedy podcast I heard this week about Atlantis and how the lost city and civilisation was invented by Plato in 360BC (which I had no idea about). So many people believe its existence to be true but there is a distinct lack of reference to it in culture, art, religious texts and other literature before this time. I wonder if there are any other examples of this where we think of something to have existed for all time, but a lack of historic cultural reference prior to a certain time is evidence against it. . . . . #historymatters #snakesheadfritillary #fritallariameleagris #easterplants #eostre #ēostre #springflowers #flowerfables #nativeplants #wildflowersuk #neophyte #ornamentalflowers #chequerboard #snakeshead #ornamentalbulbs #lostcityofatlantis #youredeadtome #youredeadtomepodcast (at Harrowby, Lincolnshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqpwYFUoGJM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
