The Boer War (1899-1902)
If the 1897 Diamond Jubilee is seen as the zenith of the British Empire, the Boer War is arguably the start of its collapse.
There are two conflicts with the name "Boer War", of which the second is by far the better known.
"Boer" is Afrikaans for farmer. The two wars are known as "the Freedom Wars" in the Afrikaans language and "the South African War" in the country itself.
More specifically, the Boers were Dutch farmers who emigrated from the Dutch and then British-controlled Cape Colony north and east into the Transvaal region that is now north-east South Africa, to get away from what they saw as an oppressive government. As well as the fact that the British abolished slavery, which they wanted to keep. So yeah. They were more specifically known as "Trekboers" or travelling farmers. Trek is of course where we get the term Star Trek from.
The first conflict from 1880-1881 started after a farmer refused to pay an illegally inflated tax, had his wagon seized - and his friends then assaulted the auction.
The Boers, better equipped, better trained and far more experienced at shooting than their British opponents, managed to defeat the latter in three major engagements. Unwilling to become engaged in a major conflict, London negotiated a peace deal that gave the South African Republic effectively full control over internal affairs, although the British retained control of external relations. This was the first time the British had lost a war to rebels since the American War of Independence.
Then gold was found in the region and an influx of immigrants, mostly British, turned up, seeking their fortune. Johannesburg emerged as a major community overnight. This caused a lot of tensions, even more so when the government in Praetoria (the SAR capital) denied the 'uitlanders' civil rights.
In 1896, Cape Colony Prime Minister Cecil Rhodes authorised Leander Starr Jameson to conduct a raid into the territory with the aim of triggering a revolution. The raid was badly botched, failed and caused massive embarrassment to the British government, especially when Kaiser Wilhelm II sent a congratulatory telegram to the SAR government... and telegrams showing Rhodes' involvement were found. Jameson, while lionised in the press, spent 15 months in Holloway for the raid.
Shortly after this, the Second Matabele War saw the British have to deal with an uprising by the Ndebele and Shona peoples in what is now Zimbabwe. They defeated it, but with many losses on both sides.
Tensions between the British and the Boers continued to grow after the Jameson Raid; the uitlanders did not see their rights improve, the Boers mistreated the African population, and a lot of the British establishment thought it would be an easy victory. The generals, for their part, did not.
The SAR had acquired high quality weaponry from Germany and France, including bolt-action Mauser rifles. The British Army for its part was in dire need of reform.
The war broke out in 1899 after an ultimatum from SAR leader Paul Kruger for the British to withdraw their forces from the border. The SAR had allied with the Orange Free State by this point.
The Boers had formed civilian militias called "commandos". They launched an invasion of the Natal and Cape Colony, soon putting British garrisons under siege. One notable such siege was at Mafeking, where the British commander was one Robert Baden-Powell, whose use of scouting, along the deception to make his defences look better than they were allowed his force to hold out for 217 days until relieved. He would later use his experience in scouting to form, well, the Scouting Movement.
After a series of major reverses, it was clear the British were going to need to send major reinforcements, recruiting a lot of volunteers - the biggest overseas force Britain had sent to date. They also removed their local commanders and put new ones in.
The sieges were lifted and Praetoria was captured on 5 June 1900 - at which point the Boers (along with foreign volunteers) moved to guerilla warfare, something that they were very adept at, in stark contrast to the British. However, harassment is not the same as taking and holding ground.
Both forces tried to minimise the involvement of people of colour due to fear of what would happen if they armed Africans, but personnel shortages meant they ended up being involved anyway, usually in supporting roles. Mahatma Gandhi, who was a civil rights activist there, formed a corps of volunteer stretcher bearers from the Indian population.
Realising that they were only controlling the territory that they were physically in, the British changed their tactics.
Firstly, they built fortified blockhouses and armoured trains to control their supply routes.
Secondly, the British adopted a "scorched earth" policy; they rounded up Boer and African civilians, placing them in concentration camps, while also systematically destroying farms, crops etc. that the Boer forces could use to supply themselves.
The Spanish had used concentration camps in Cuba earlier in the 19th century, but this was a much wider use. With little or no soap, along with dirty water, disease swept through the overcrowded camps, with over 46,000 dying in them, including a quarter of the Boers in them - African numbers interned were not properly counted. Emily Hobhouse exposed the horrific conditions, and the matter was taken up by domestic politicians. A government commission led by Millicent Fawcett then recommended major improvements, which were largely implemented and brought down the death rate, but the damage had been done by this point.
The brutal tactics were sadly effective; the Boers were beginning to give up. However, the British themselves were running out of time and money, so gave them a generous settlement in the 1902 Treaty of Vereeniging; while the SAR and Orange Free State would be absorbed into the British Empire, Dutch could be used in schools and courts, there would be a general amnesty and reconstruction aid would be given.
Self-government was also promised and granted; it was decided that the issue of black enfranchisement would not be discussed until then - and full enfranchisement would not come until 1993.
The war was controversial in the UK; it was opposed by the opposition Liberal Party. Lord Salisbury called a snap election in 1900 and won with a slightly reduced majority. The next election in 1906 was a massive defeat for them though.
The conflict also exposed the dire state of British public health - with up to 40% of volunteers for the war being rejected on health grounds. This spurred the creation of the National Insurance system.
Arthur Conan Doyle volunteered for military service in the conflict; but was turned down due to his age. Instead, he served for three months in a field hospital and then wrote two books about the conflict. The second one, defending Britain's involvement in the war, was felt by Doyle to be the work that got him his knighthood in 1902.
The war was also notable for one journalist who after being captured by the South Africans, managed to escape from behind enemy lines, using the publicity to get into Parliament on his second attempt. His name was Winston Churchill.
At 2022 values, the war cost Britain over £19.9 billion.
They had also had 26,092 soldiers killed to the Boers 6,189. As with all wars at this time, disease was the biggest killer.

Good News - April 8-14
(Actually 8-12 due to irl obligations)
Like these weekly compilations? Support me on Ko-fi! Also, if you tip me on here or Ko-fi, at the end of the month I'll send you a link to all of the articles I found but didn't use each week - almost double the content! (I'm new to taking tips on here; if it doesn't show me your username or if you have DM's turned off, please send me a screenshot of your payment)
1. Interior Department Finalizes Action to Strengthen Endangered Species Act
Tumblr media
“These revisions, which will increase efficiency by reducing the time and cost to develop and negotiate permit applications, will encourage more individuals and companies to engage in conservation benefit agreements and habitat conservation plans, generating greater conservation results overall.”
2. Young Puerto Ricans Restore Habitat Damaged by Hurricane While Launching Conservation Careers
Tumblr media
“Corps members help restore the island’s environmental and cultural assets and volunteer in hard-hit local communities. They also gain valuable paid work experience and connections to possible future employers, something many young Puerto Ricans struggle to find.”
3. Australian-born cheetah released in Africa for the first time ever. Watch the heart-warming moment Edie is set free
Tumblr media
““The Metapopulation Initiative will bring in appropriate males, probably two initially, to breed with Edie,” King says. “It’s those future cubs, and their cubs, that will ensure the legacy of spreading Edie’s genetics across the southern African metapopulation. And we will have also provided Edie – a wild animal, let’s not forget – with a chance of a life in the wild.””
4. Baby Bald Eagles Confirmed in 2 of 4 Nests in Will County Forest Preserves
Tumblr media
“A pair of fuzzy eaglet heads were spotted popping up out of one of the nests this week, officials said. Two weeks ago, monitors noticed adult eagles feeding an unseen hatchling (or hatchlings) in a different nest.”
5. New Hope for Love for Japanese Children Needing Families
“The new system, established by a 2022 law, offers private childcare institutions financing to transform their business model into “Foster Care Support Centers” that recruit, train, select, and support foster parents, and assist the independence of children living in foster families. If a childcare institution becomes a Foster Care Support Center, the government will fund full-time staff members based on the number of foster households they cater to.”
6. Nexamp nabs $520M to build community solar across the US
Tumblr media
“Nexamp, a community solar developer and project owner, has secured a whopping $520million to install solar arrays around the nation in one of the largest capital raises to date for this growing sector. Community solar gives renters, small businesses and organizations the chance to benefit from local solar power even if they can’t put panels on their own roofs.”
7. A natural touch for coastal defense: Hybrid solutions which combine nature with common “hard” coastal protection measures may offer more benefits in lower-risk areas
“Common “hard” coastal defenses, like concrete sea walls, might struggle to keep up with increasing climate risks. A new study shows that combining them with nature-based solutions could, in some contexts, create defenses which are better able to adapt.”
8. Rewilding program ships eggs around the world to restore Raja Ampat zebra sharks
Tumblr media
“A survey estimated the zebra shark had a population of 20 spread throughout the Raja Ampat archipelago, making the animal functionally extinct in the region. […] Researchers hope to release 500 zebra sharks into the wild within 10 years in an effort to support a large, genetically diverse breeding population.”
9. Forest Loss Plummets in Brazil and Colombia
Tumblr media
“New data reveals a decline in primary forest loss in Brazil and Colombia, highlighting the significant impact of environmental reforms in curbing deforestation. According to 2022-2023 data from the University of Maryland’s GLAD Lab and World Resource’s Institute (WRI), primary forests in Brazil experienced a 36 per cent decrease in deforestation under President Inácio Lula da Silva’s leadership, reaching its lowest level since 2015. Colombia nearly halved (by 49 per cent) its forest loss under the administration of President Gustavo Petro Urrego, who has prioritised rural and environmental reform.”
10. New Agreement Paves the Way for Ocelot Reintroduction on Private Lands
Tumblr media
“With the safe harbor agreement in place, partners plan to begin developing a source stock of ocelots for reintroduction. Over the next year, they plan to construct an ocelot conservation facility in Kingsville to breed and raise ocelots. Producing the first offspring is expected to take a few years.”

I made the mistake of checking the reddit post about Lewis' travels through Africa and to say I am baffled by the racism and classism is an understatement. Let me list a few issues people had with Lewis' post:
It's tone deaf to wear one-off designer clothing he paid thousands for in Africa because everyone in Africa is poor, apparently. It's only acceptable to wear designer clothing in wealthy European countries. Morons in Christ, he doesn't pay for those clothes. He gets paid to wear them and then returns them. Additionally, multiple African countries are stable, safe and middle income. Assuming that they're all poor and that his designer clothes would offend us is stupid and racist.
It's tone deaf to document your luxurious travels through Africa in 4k. Why? Y'all take one Christian service trip to Africa to exploit children and post it incessantly. Documenting the trip of a lifetime for memories is within his right and actually does a service in undermining the image of Africa as a conglomerate with nothing but starving children. His best friends are also photographers and artists who in addition to having a good time are building portfolios out of this. I want to go to Namibia now and ride a hot air balloon and will be doing so as soon as I can get past the planning phase group chat with my friends and you best believe everything I do will be shot in 4k.
We all come from Africa. Lewis isn't special for tracing his roots. You're absolutely right but it appears that your Neanderthal brain has not progressed far enough to understand why some groups of people have a hard time tracing their lineage. Slavery. The answer is slavery.
He's just doing this for clout like A-train in The Boys season 3. To what end? Lewis has a stellar reputation among everyone but racists. What would he need the clout or good press for? The man has literally been booked and busy the entire break. I also find it weird that that a murderous, dysfunctional, money hungry villain from a tv show was your first reference point for Lewis when he's trying to trace his roots but when White people do it, it's something to cry about on 60 Minutes.
So he shows up, has fun and takes pictures and then goes home? What about the people living in abject poverty? I didn't realize that Lewis was in charge of solving absolute poverty. I must have missed that in his job description. However, if it bothers you so much, feel free to become a UN Volunteer and work towards alleviating poverty levels globally. Yes, globally because contrary to popular believe, there are poor people everywhere and not just in Africa.
Edit: the mods on reddit had to delete 18 THOUSAND comments due to the casual and overt racism.

who are cass' siblings? would love a Bucky meeting her parents and Cass meeting Bucky's sisters and mum
Cass comes from a big family. She is child 4/6 and is super close with her olding siblings in particular, her leaving for school and Europe getting in the way a little bit with her younger siblings. I know we got her and his family briefly in an interlude and met one of her brothers but promise more is coming! If you have anything specific you would like to see/discuss please let me know! Little Cooper sibling bios below:
Bobby: Stationed in North Africa, meets John when they land there. Very protective of his family and in line to take over the family business. Married to a Red Cross nurse with a baby boy.
Olivia: The most perfect daughter their mother could have asked for (which means Cass thinks she doesn't have to be). Married to a big time lawyer with three kids.
Kent: Enlists and serves in the Pacific. Is MIA at the end of the war.
Cass: our favorite :)
Jill/Everett (twins): Jill probably has the biggest heart in the entire family and spends her free time volunteering at animal clinics and food banks (also has a major crush on John). Everett wants to be a pilot from the day he learns what planes are so John becomes like a mentor figure to him.

It's january, which means it's seed-buying time for many gardeners! So, here is your reminder: Do not buy anything from Baker Creek / Rareseeds. com ; they are racist, anti-vaxxers; they steal varieties from Native communities, are friends with Clive Bundy, wanted to invite Robert F Kennedy Jr to one of their seed expos. They've fundraised for the homophobic and misogynistic Salvation Army
They have adopted young children from asian countries to use as free advertising for their "~exotic Asian seed varieties~" by having them pose with all of the (stolen + renamed) Asian varieties as young children-- might have to check the Wayback Machine to see this in action, or look at physical seed packets for this, as they've cut back on it after coming underfire for such a gross practice.
Anyways, would you like to know who you SHOULD support this year when purchasing seeds?
Experimental Farm Network, who has been nothing but vocally supportive of Palestinians and calling for everyone to do what they can to end the genocide Israel is committing.
Tumblr media
[ID: A facebook post by Experimental Farm Network, which shows a hand holding three young, fuzzy Yakteen gourds, which are oblong, light green fruits with a visible fuzz on the outside, with dried blossoms visible on the ends. The post reads: "These are 'Palestine Yakteen' gourds at almost the perfect size for harvest. I normally would've waited to pick them about twice as large, when they're still tender and delicious. But the first big frost (a couple months ago) had killed the plant, so these were officially done. The plant was a volunteer in my backyard. I didn't even know it was there until about September, and in November I was enjoying these first — and last — fruit (with garlic, parsley, salt, and Palestinian olive oil). It was, no doubt, the most bittersweet meal of my life. Today is the 100th day of unimaginable violence against Palestinians in Gaza. South Africa is arguing in the International Court of Justice that Israel is committing genocide. Hundreds of Gazans are still dying every day, from bombings, yes, but now also from hunger, thirst, disease, and exposure. From the comfort of our heated homes, with our drinkable running water, working toilets, and well-stocked pantries, in communities with functioning clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies available to us should we need them, it's impossible to really understand what life is like in Gaza right now. It may seem incongruous — or even trite — to post a picture of some pretty vegetables in this context, but the Yakteen can serve as an important reminder of the humanity and beauty of Palestinian people and their ancient culture. They are not nameless, faceless nobodies. They tend gardens, smell flowers, celebrate with family and friends over steaming dishes of lovingly prepared food. They love deeply. They sing and dance and laugh. They are just like you or me. Please do not only remember them today. Take action to help them. Or resolve to take action. Or reach out and ask someone how you can take action. Do something. Please. Because you can. end ID]
This is just one of many posts they have shared on their social medias since the genocide began, and they have been partnered with Palestine Heirloom Seed Library to help raise funds; each packet of seeds from their Palestine collection has 50% of the proceeds going towards funding the Seed Library, and they
If you have friends or family who order from Baker Creek, please let them know exactly who they are supporting -- and reassure them that dozens of other seed companies with much better ethics are out there, offering those exact same "rare" varieties! Seedsavers.org is another great heirloom alternative, with the bonus that they regularly work on seed Rematriation- returning Native heirloom varieties to the indiginous communities who created them

KE AUPUNI UPDATE - FEBRUARY 2024
Tumblr media
How Many Hawaiians Are There? In September (2023) several news outlets reported a story that said, according to the United States 2020 Census, for the first time ever, more native Hawaiians live in the continental U.S. than here in the Hawaiian Islands. The stories said, of the, 680,442 Native Hawaiians counted in the census, 47 percent live in Hawaiʻi, while 53 percent resided on the US continent. It was not a surprise, we saw it coming. Years of increasing cost of living driven by displacement, commercial development, land speculation, low paying jobs and social tensions has driven away many Hawaiians, especially “native Hawaiians” from their homeland. The exodus has been prevalent among young adults starting out in life, with grim prospects of a future in Hawaii, for a decent job or affording a home to start a family. This is a tragic situation. But the diaspora is worse than we thought. Hawaii has become so American-minded that we blindly think the number, 680,442 refers to all the native Hawaiians on the planet, when it only represents those who reside in Hawaii and the U.S. What about all those native Hawaiians who live elsewhere in the world? How many are in Europe, Asia, Africa, North, Central and South America? Australia and Oceania? I can’t find any stats on them, and perhaps, none exists. Has anyone counted them? Has anyone reached out to them? And thatʻs not all. What about those who are not ethnically Hawaiians (not “native Hawaiians”) but Hawaiians by birth, by hānai (adoption), by family ties generations long, and by their Aloha ʻĀina, love of the land? When we talk about Lāhui, we are talking about all those who identify as Hawaiians, regardless of their ethnic, cultural or political background. Surely there are many thousands of Hawaiians spread out in the rest of the world — but no one seems to have counted them! ... not the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Kamehameha Schools, the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, the State of Hawaii, and not the United States Census Bureau. This means the Hawaiians who live in places other than Hawaii and the U.S. statistically don’t exist! But we know they are there, and that Hawaii is their homeland.  That means not only are there way more native Hawaiians in the world than the population stats tell us, it also means, when we include all the other Hawaiians — those who carry Hawaiʻi in their hearts — our Lāhui (our nation of Aloha) and our future is way bigger and deeper than we had imagined.

April 2022 SAVE AWARD Winner was Diane Amison-Loring
Saving the African Golden Cat
If you don’t see Diane on property it’s because she’s out spreading our mission about the BCPSA to schools and online! She’s also in the social WP group dropping us funny cat-related jokes to make us smile! Between all that she likes to drop off treats to the keeper cafe to keep the humans at Big Cat enriched! She also proofreads & submits edits to the Big Cat Times for us before printing! Is there anything you can’t do?!! Thanks for all you do! Congratulations, Diane!
The April SAVE award donation of $1,000 is to Embaka. Embaka is a registered non-profit Community-Based Conservation Organization, located in Uganda that is working on threat reduction and conservation of the elusive African Golden Cat. They are a part of the newly created African golden cat Conservation Alliance and Working Group (AGCCA & WG), whose communal goal is to expand and oversee the conservation of the African golden cat across the entire species range. The African Golden Cat is Africa’s least known wild cat and is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN red list.
Embaka is currently working on a Smile for Conservation initiative where they provide local communities with health and financial aid in return for anti-poaching cooperation and involvement. This initiative is focused on communities who live around Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a known residence of the African Golden Cat.
The initiative aims to have a poachers-to-protectors effect by providing local communities with the use of mobile dental clinics, the first of its kind in the region, to provide free oral health check-ups, pain relieving procedures, and oral health education. The households to benefit are selected at random via public and fully transparent lotteries from all households and are required to 1) have taken the pledge to support anti-poaching efforts either by committing to stop poaching and/or volunteer in the anti-poaching community policing groups and 2) are living not further than 1 km from the Bwindi boundary.
The outcome of this activity will be improved health and well-being for all age classes, women and men, and increased awareness about the importance of African golden cats. The pamphlets announcing the dental clinics will have the Embaka (African golden cat) logo and the service will be clearly tied to conservation and offered as a benefit/incentive to households that have pledged to voluntarily combat poaching within the community.

🚀- Where do you want to visit?
"That's a good question, honestly. I've done quite a bit of traveling since I was born. Being Immortal gives you plenty of time but I can't say that I have seen EVERYTHING the world has to offer." Jordan says "I think I'd like to go on a safari in Africa, pick the brains of the of the animals there. I've never visited Africa. The closest I've gotten was when Dad and I volunteered for free healthcare in the Middle East. I think meeting a few feral versions of the big game shifters I have contact with in LA will help me understand their animal side better and what better way than a safari on Africa where I'd get to see the tigers, lions, bears and leopards up close and personal? Though I'd probably terrify the tour guide by asking to get off the bus and walk straight up to a wild tiger and just start petting it." Jordan laughs.
👊🏼- Something you hate?
"My life involves having more contact with animals and shifters than humans so any time I see someone harming an animal it pisses me off. If you don't like an animal, fine, just leave them alone don't freaking abuse them." Jordan says "Our little fur baby was a former victim of abuse and someone threw her off a bridge when we were still living in New Orleans. Kevin jumped in and saved her even though he's terrified of drowning so doesn't really swim like that. I was so insanely proud of him."
📝- Story from your childhood
"I was born and raised in Brooklyn to a single mom who immigrated there from Korea right before I was born. We weren't exactly poor but we weren't wealthy either, we got by. On weeks when Mom could actually afford to splurge a little we'd go get ice cream and head down to the dog park because she noticed I was always more comfortable around animals. I remember sitting on the bench with her and telling her about all the things the dogs were saying that everyone else without my gift couldn't hear. She would just laugh and listen as I talked about it so naturally. I got teased and called Dr Doolittle a lot groaning up, other kids thought I was crazy because I would talk to animals but not my mom. She got sick right before I moved to London to finish getting my Vetrinary license from Oxford, where I met Mason and he adopted me as his own. I went back after I graduated with Mason and we offered to cure her but she was tired and ready to go. So I sat with her until she passed. She had Mason promise to always take care of me and treat me like a son since I never really had a dad since the demon that got my mom pregnant just fucked off back to hell. I changed my name to Han after she passed but I kept her name as my middle name. I am grateful to my Dad but I do miss her sometimes."
✌️- Want any piercings?
"Well, I only had my ears for the longest time before I met Ryland and Ethan. Ry convinced me to get my nipples done, so I let Ethan pierce my nipples. Shocked the hell out of Kevin, but he likes to play with them." Jordan laughs."I thought about getting my tongue done since I heard it makes oral better for my baby, but I'm not sure yet. If Kev wanted me to, I'd get Ethan to do it today.

Ukrainians!
All our defenders!
Today was a useful day for Ukraine, very meaningful. A day that showed how strong our state has become, and this is not the limit yet. We are doing everything so that the strength of Ukraine, the opportunities of Ukraine, the freedom of Ukraine only increase.
Today we celebrate the day of our flag, and it happens at a time when we are fighting against the most dreadful threat to our statehood and at the same time when we have achieved the greatest national unity. That is why we endured. Because we united and united the world around true values.
Our national flag has become a global symbol of courage. A symbol of all who value a free life. Where there is blue and yellow, there is no and will be no tyranny. Where there is blue and yellow, there are no and will not be savages.
Our flag is everywhere - from the frontline, where our warriors beat the enemy, to capitals on all continents, and it means one thing everywhere - humanity.
I am grateful to everyone who defends true values. I am grateful to everyone who helps Ukraine. I am grateful to everyone who, since February 24, has chosen the path of struggle for what makes life real: for freedom, for independence.
Very soon we will celebrate our main national holiday - our independence. Already tomorrow. We have planned many activities - something that will emphasize the path we have covered. Covered together - Ukrainians in Ukraine, throughout our territory - free and temporarily occupied, because our people are fighting everywhere. Ukrainians abroad - all those who helped, all those who spread the truth about Ukraine, all those who urged to fight for Ukraine.
No occupier feels safe on our land. All collaborators know that they have no future. And we all do not just believe - we see that our state has a perspective.
And for tomorrow, I have planned to award people who have contributed to our strength. These are people from different areas of life. Our warriors, all those who help warriors. Communication officers, railwaymen, rescuers, media workers, those who inform our people, who work in the national marathon "United News". These are utility workers, electricians, drivers, volunteers, officials, athletes, artists - those artists who are known on the frontline, whom the army is grateful to, those who preserve and restore the positive emotions of our warriors.
I asked various ministries, regional administrations, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, media representatives to submit their proposals on who deserves awards on Independence Day. It is up to you to decide. And tomorrow the awards will be given to those who really deserve them.
Now I am near the office of the Crimea Platform, near the building that symbolizes that we care about every part of Ukraine, about every part of our people - the great Ukrainian people. Crimea is an integral part of our state, Crimea is Ukraine. Crimea is an integral part of our people. And we will certainly come to our cities in Crimea, to our people in Crimea and return to them the freedom that belongs to them by right, as well as to all our other people.
That is why we have organized a special format - the Crimean format, the Crimea Platform. We held the inaugural summit last summer and today we have already held the second one. I am grateful to all participants of the summit - 40 leaders, almost 60 states and international organizations. European leaders, leaders of the G7, leaders of the countries of Africa, Asia, Latin America. This is not just a meeting, not just a discussion. The Crimea Platform became a global forum that united the leaders of the free world. This is a community of people who help restore peace and legality for Crimea, for the Black Sea region, for all of Europe.
And the fact that we are holding the summit for the second time right now, with the expansion of the representation, is a clear response of the world to Russian aggression. Clear support for our sovereignty and territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders. Russian aggression began in Crimea, and its finale will be in Crimea as well.
In Kyiv, on Constitution Square, the Walk of the Brave was opened today - a place to honor the personal strength of those people who did not fail after February 24, who were not afraid, who did not retreat under the pressure of tyranny. Who helped us fight against Russian aggression and is still helping us. And the first name that we presented on the Walk of the Brave is the name of Andrzej Duda, the President of Poland. He was in Kyiv today, participating in the Crimea Platform. And for not a single day during these six months has he lost strength in supporting Ukraine. I am grateful to him!
I definitely want to address our Kharkiv and all Kharkiv residents separately today. You are heroic people, a heroic city. A proud city. A city with a sense of self-respect. A city that knows how to defend itself. A city whose people know how to unite. A neat city. A city that always impresses everyone who comes and sees how Kharkiv residents take care of their streets and yards even when they are under the brutal pressure of Russian terrorists.
Today is Kharkiv Day. Now our Kharkiv is not willing to celebrate. Yes, Kharkiv experienced a lot of injustice and cruelty. But Kharkiv will never be a city of black scorched windows and ruined districts. Kharkiv will never submit to this evil, which has nothing but artillery and missiles.
We will definitely liberate the entire Kharkiv region. We will find a way to guarantee security to our Kharkiv. And we will do everything to restore the city. I promise!
Fellow Ukrainians!
Tomorrow is an important day for all of us. And that is why this day, unfortunately, is also important for our enemy. We must be aware that tomorrow hideous Russian provocations and brutal strikes are possible.
The Armed Forces of Ukraine, our intelligence, special services will do everything to protect people - as much as possible. And we will certainly respond to any manifestation of Russian terror.
But please follow the safety rules strictly tomorrow. Please observe the curfew. Pay attention to the air sirens. Pay attention to official announcements. And remember: we must all achieve victory together.
Eternal glory to all who fight for Ukraine!
Glory to Ukraine!

Cradle of the Deep by Dietrich Kalteis
Wanting to free herself from her boyfriend, aging gangster "Maddog" Palmieri, Bobbi Ricci concocts a misguided plan with Denny, Maddog's ex-driver, a guy who's bent on getting even with the gangster for the humiliating way in which he was sacked. Helping themselves to the gangster's secret money stash, along with his Cadillac, Bobbi and Denny slip out of town, expecting to lay low for a while before enjoying the spoils.
Realizing he's been betrayed, an enraged Maddog calls in stone-cold killer Lee Trane. As Trane picks up their trail, plans quickly change for Bobbi and Denny, who now find themselves on a wild chase of misadventure through northern British Columbia and into Alaska.
Time is running out for them once they find out that Trane's been sent to do away with them, or worse, bring them back — either way, Maddog will make them pay.
Thirst for Justice by David R. Boyd
Michael MacDougall is a talented trauma surgeon whose life in Seattle is slowly unraveling. Frustrated as an ER doctor and with his marriage in trouble, he volunteers with a medical aid charity in the Congo. Disconsolate at the lives he cannot save in the desperate conditions of the region, he is shattered by a roadside confrontation with the mercenary Mai Mai that results in unthinkable losses.
Back home in Seattle, he is haunted by his experiences in Africa and what he sees as society's failure to provide humanitarian aid to those who most desperately need it. Locked in a downward spiral, he becomes obsessed with making his government listen to him and dreams up an act of terrorism to shock his nation awake.
Activist and lawyer David Boyd's debut novel is a taut political thriller that begs the question: how far is too far when you're seeking justice?
The Unlocking Season by Gail Bowen
On a Saturday bright with harbingers of spring, Joanne Kilbourn-Shreve, her husband, Zack, and their family prepare to celebrate the season. Joanne's life is full, and at 60, she has been given the chance to understand a part of her history that for years was shrouded in secrecy.
Living Skies is producing Sisters and Strangers, a six-part TV series about the tangled relationships between the families of Douglas Ellard, the father who raised Joanne, and Desmond Love, her biological father. Joanne is working on the script with Roy Brodnitz, a brilliant writer and friend. The project's future seems assured, but before the script is completed, Brodnitz disappears while scouting locations in northern Saskatchewan. Hours later, he's found — sweat-drenched, clawing at the ground, and muttering gibberish. He dies in a state of mortal terror.
Heartsick and perplexed, Joanne resolves to learn what happened in the last hours of Roy's life. What Joanne discovers threatens Brodnitz's legacy, and the decision about whether or not to reveal the truth is hers to make. The Unlocking Season is another deeply satisfying and thought-provoking novel from one of Canada's finest crime writers.
This is the 19th volume of the “A Joanne Kilbourn Mystery” series.
