I honestly think I would hate Holly Black’s Modern Faerie Tales—hate them with a real, robust, righteous hatred—except that I know where they lead. every story is all pyrrhic victories and corruption arcs, the people we root for are terrible and lost, but at least they stay free! at least they’re not as terrible as the people in that far-off court seeking to keep everyone under its thumb! but I know. I know that in that far-off court that is the worst of what Faerie has to offer, the seeds of a story have been planted. a story that plunges into corruption and compromise, but doesn’t stop there. vulnerability and trust will overcome the the cowardice of power and control, and the modern faerie tale world will give birth to a fairy tale ending.

#me watching everyone be dissolute little monsters in the first trilogy: you’ve got a big storm comin #the graph of modern faerie tales to folk of the air starts out at the far corner of cruel world cruel narrative #and ends up at the far end of cruel world kind narrative #like I HATE Valiant. I dyed my hair cherry fucking red and have decided I’m a fairy. No. Seriously.

I haven’t felt human all my life. Don’t know when it started. Don’t know why it started. It could be due to isolation, to lifelong feelings of inadequacy, to rejection. Maybe it’s psychological. Maybe it’s spiritual. Maybe it’s both. I just know I think strange thoughts. Strange, inexplicable things happen to me and have happened to me all throughout my life. I guess I don’t really know what humans think about and how humans think, but I feel so far away from them. I’m not better than them. We share the same DNA. I’m just... I don’t know if I’m one of them.

And when I look in the mirror? Even my reflection. Even my fucking reflection. I used to hate it. My cherubic, feminine face. The full lips. The bright gray-blue eyes. The porcelain skin. I hated it. I hated it because my reflection didn’t show this darkness, this monster I have.

Anyway. I’m rambling. I’m diving into the otherkin community now. I don’t have answers. Don’t know about past lives. I’m posting this just to say “Hi, I’m Jack. I’m a fairy. Welcome to this weird little blog.”
