Here have some fluffy Jon/Damian/Elle (Super Serious Chaos? Super Serious Chaos) where Jon & Elle bully exhausted pre-vet college student Damian into taking a nap with the cruel application of cuddles on the couch:

Jon’s hand was wide and warm against his back as the Kryptonian absently swiped it along Damian’s spine. Meanwhile Elle was intent on gently dragging her nails along Damian’s scalp, fingers soft through his hair. Between the two of them, the soft couch they’d bullied him into getting when they moved into the apartment and the slant of sunlight they were currently all laying in, Damian didn’t have a chance.

He was supposed to be studying. He had an exam next week for his zoology course and it didn’t matter if he knew the information front to back, he was going to get a perfect grade. But then Jon had splayed out on their plush and over-sized couch with some documentary about scientists attempting to grow seeds discovered preserved in permafrost. And Elle had been pestering him about shrimp posture at his desk - he had perfect posture, thank you he was just making sure to get close enough to his study material, his back hurt because he had patrol last night, nothing else - so he’d allowed her to herd him over to study in the living room instead.

And it was a law of the universe that a Kryptonian wearing soft fleece Robin-themed pajamas basking in the sun was always going to be the most comfortable place for a Bat to perch. So he’d sat down beside his boyfriend - no he had not flopped, he’d simply allowed gravity to do the work for him, it was energy conservation, it was practical - and prepared to study as Elle took her own spot curled up sideways in Jon’s lap with her legs tossed over Damian’s. Sun-sleepy Kryptonian’s were an ideal landing place for ghosts with fire cores as well, obviously.

Somewhere along the line his significant others had conspired against him.

It was the only explanation for how his notes ended up tossed on the coffee table haphazardly while he laid face down across the couch in a nest of pillows with his head in Elle’s lap and Jon’s arm curling over his back, eyes drooping as he lost the battle with sleep. Titus, the traitor, had hopped up to lay against his legs, a heavy warm weight drawing him further and further down. Elle had started humming a song somewhere along the time she’d begun playing with his hair, and Jon was giving those low - near imperceptible - rumbling purrs he gave off when content as he traced patterns along Damian’s back.

This was pay back for staying out until five last night on patrol even though he had a class at seven-thirty. He’d told them he would be fine, he’d done far worse on far less sleep. Timothy routinely juggled a dozen or so projects at a time with just an hour or so of sleep ever few days and Damian was far more competent than him. That argument - for all his grumbled weak protests in the face of Jon and Elle’s unimpressed and worried expressions could be called an argument - had apparently not swayed them though. He was fairly certain Jon had texted the family group chat - Damian’s phone had been confiscated upon stumbling returning home from Gotham U on the grounds that he would end up running off to try and join in on one of the cases one of his siblings mentioned if he was allowed to keep it, again - to ban him from patrols for the rest of the week.

He’d have to get his revenge somehow. He couldn’t just let them run roughshod all over his life like that.

Maybe he could make some sù yā for dinner. Elle had picked up fresh bamboo shoots along with some other stuff on her last portal hop when she’d found herself in Guangzhou. And Jon’s grandparents had passed along some carrots and ginger from the farm that they needed to use.

Last time he’d made the dish Jon had almost cried and Elle had glowed so brightly it had looked like the sun had taken up residence in their dining room. The two had nearly set the apartment on fire fighting over the last piece. Their shrieks of despair when they realized Damian had eaten it while they were tussling had been more satisfying than every victory over every enemy he’d ever faced combined.

Yes. A fine vengeance indeed.

But…later. After he’d lulled them into a false sense of security. Let them think they had the upper hand and strike when they least expected it. It wasn’t that he was falling asleep. No. It was tactical. And had nothing at all to do with the surge of affection and warmth and security that came with having them so close, doting on him. He was tactically allowing himself to appear vulnerable. Nuzzling closer and tightening his hold on them where he’d wrapped his arms around the two was a ruse.

Jon squeezed back, tight enough to press the air out of Damian’s lungs and sooth away some of the latent anxiety over his upcoming test. Elle swiped a lock of hair that’d fallen into his eyes away, palm curling around his cheek and thumb softly stroking along his temple. On the TV scientists droned on about soil composition and growth rates of similar modern plants. Titus gave one of those low grumbling whines that meant he’d fallen asleep where he was curled up against Damian’s legs and was happily dreaming.

Damian allowed his eyes to close. Content to drift to sleep in the arms of the two menaces he loved most in the world.

Summary: Alex is overworking himself, going late into the night and working hours without breaks. Sick of his lover’s dreadful work-life management, Henry takes it upon himself to get Alex to sleep.

Warnings: mild Red, White & Royal Blue spoilers! This is a tickle fic, so if you don’t like that, scroll away!!

Life for Alex Claremont-Diaz was the best it had ever been. Henry came over almost daily from his Brownstone, and he finally felt like he had a definite idea of where his life was headed. The only downside: he was still in school.

The NYU Law course was a bit more rigorous than he’d expected, but it was definitely what he wanted. Sure, that meant long, painful hours of reviewing for extremely difficult exams, discovering that tort is a real word, and trying to figure out a system for coursework that didn’t make his brain want to explode.

His sleep schedule was already shit, so he didn’t think any of it would be a problem. If he just pulled a few all-nighters and pumped out some late-night essays, he’d be fine. What he didn’t think about, however, was how Henry would take it.

Alex was working late on another essay, running off of coffee and pure determination. He hadn’t meant to put it off, but with the three exams he’d had that week, his mind was a scattered mess.

Henry had put up with it for most of the night, but as two AM rolled around, his understanding had run dry, replaced by concern.

Knocking the “shave and a haircut” pattern on his lover’s door, Henry entered the room. He was immediately greeted with the strong smell of coffee and desperation.

There sat his boyfriend, hunched over a computer with a half-eaten ham sandwich (he couldn’t handle turkey anymore) by his side. The blonde couldn’t help the sad sigh that escaped him.

Alex looked up, his glasses nearly all the way down on his nose. It was unfairly cute, though Henry shoved that feeling down for the moment.

“Uh…hey, Hen. Not done yet; gimme, like, another half-hour.” Alex’s gaze was back on his computer in seconds.

Henry rubbed his temples, already feeling a headache brew. For once, why couldn’t Alex just use common sense?

“Alex, darling. It’s two in the morning. You need to sleep.”

Alex scoffed, not stopping for even a second. “Says you. You stay up later than I do most of the time.” While that wasn’t untrue, Henry’s problems were because of insomnia. Alex was just a stubborn asshole.

“Look, I’m going to be brutally honest here. You look terrible, you seem exhausted, and the bags under your eyes could fit the entirety of the Royal Wardrobe. Go. To. Sleep.”

Henry laid things out bluntly, crossing his arms. It was meant to leave little room for negotiation, but defying Henry’s expectations was Alex’s special talent.

“This is due at eight AM…uh, today. I’ve only got six hours to finish this thing, but I’m almost done. I promise, just a bit longer.” This would have been more comforting if Alex hadn’t already said that three times.

“Alex, please. If you sleep now, I’ll wake you up at six, and we’ll work on it together. It hurts to see you like this, dear.” He used pet names, trying to sway Alex to listen. It was a last-ditch effort; if he still refused, Henry didn’t have much of a plan left. Sure enough, he did.

“It’s fine, Henry. I’m all good, just a little spacy. I promise, the moment I’m done, I’ll eat your face. Okay, baby?” Alex flipped the other man’s strategy back on him, hoping to fully bury the concern. He was fine: end of story.

For Henry, though, the tale was just beginning. He racked his brain, searching for anything to help him get Alex to cooperate. He could only remember one time anyone was successful.

Alex had invited him to the White House for June’s birthday party. As the night dragged on, everyone but Alex was drunk and exhausted. To tire him out, June had employed some rather…unconventional methods.

Methods that would be extremely useful to him at that moment.

Casually approaching his boyfriend, Henry put a hand on the laptop. Then, after making sure the work was saved, he closed it. He pointedly ignored Alex’s scoff and protests, grabbing his chin and pulling him in for a kiss. Alex still squirmed, though a smile was breaking out on his face.

That was all Henry needed to continue. He gripped Alex under his thighs, lifting the man up and plopping him down on his nearby bed.

A surprised sound left him, his cheeks gaining a nearly imperceptible red hue. He was expecting some push-back from Henry, but nothing this active.

“Just couldn’t wait for me, could you~?” Alex weteased, starting to sit up on the bed. Henry was quick to stop that, grabbing Alex’s arms and pinning them above his head.

Before his lover could make another joke, Henry tapped a few fingers on his side. That shut him up, if only for a second.

“Henry, I swear to fucking god, if you try anything-” He was cut off when Henry squeezed his side, resulting in an indignant squeak.

“Sorry, dear, but I’m afraid I already have~” With that, Henry clawed his fingers into Alex’s stomach, straddling him.

The tired man tried to bite his lip, but the coffee wasn’t quite enough to give him that energy. A few giggles slipped out, quickly followed by tiny curses.

“What’s the matter, Alex? Something bothering you?” Henry chuckled, leaning down further to try and hold him still.

Kicking and squirming, Alex tried anything to get away from the evil fingers. He was tired, though; his brain was moving at half-speed and felt like it was running through soup.

“Gehehet ohoff me, youhuhu prihick!” Henry has decided to move up to his ribs, scritching and scratching between each bone.

Even on a good day, it’d be hard for Alex to get out from under him. With no sleep, coffee fumes and pure spite, he had no chance.

“Why on Earth would I do that? I’m quite comfortable here. Besides, you seem to be enjoying yourself, if that blush is any indication,” Henry taunted, jutting his chin out. He didn’t really need to, but it was a sure-fire way to rile Alex.

“Fuhuhuck off! Hehenry, I swehehear- quihit!” Alex tried to bury his face in his shoulder, though he only drew attention to a new target. Henry leaned down, blowing a raspberry on his boyfriend’s neck. Alex would rather die than repeat the squeal that left him.

“Wow, Alex. Perhaps the Barbara Streisand accusation wasn't so far off,” he teased, his voice about as smug than Alex had ever heard it.

The typically witty man was in giggly shambles, trying his best not to sound like a child. He wasn’t very successful.

“SHUHUhut uhup, youhu douche!!” Laughing like a toddler, Alex was still pumping out insults. Henry was about to put a stop to that. Going for the kill, he hooked his thumbs into Alex's hip divots, kneading and squeezing the area.

That seemed to work quite well.

“GAH- HEHENRY! You- YAHAHA! FAHAHACK!” The law student lost his shit, practically cackling under his boyfriend.

Alex arched his back off the bed, only bucking into the ticklish feeling. There was no room in his mind for witt; the best he could do was “fuck fuck fuck it tickles oh my god-”

Hearts practically formed in Henry’s eyes at the adorably hysteric reaction. Still, as cute as it was, he had a mission.

“This all ends the moment you agree to rest. Or…would you like me to continue? I bet I could just tickle you senseless all night. You’d surely be exhausted then, wouldn’t you?”

Alex couldn’t even get a word out, shaking his head as he laughed. His curls went wild, getting in his eyes and puffing up. Henry wanted to brush it from his eyes, but he had to keep his priorities in order. There would be time for fawning over him later.

“HEHENRY! PLEHE- snrk” It took a solid minute, but Alex’s resolve was weakening. He was already tired beforehand, and laughing his ass off wasn’t helping. The squirming had died down almost completely, snorts slipping into the lax cackles.

While it wasn’t an agreement, the Prince could tell that his lover would be out in seconds. Henry stopped, switching to gentle traces down his sides. The first son tried to calm down, a steady stream of giggles pouring from his lips.

“H-hoholy shihihit… Thahat was evil.” He tried taking some deep breaths, rubbing his cheeks. Alex hadn’t laughed that hard in a while. He was close to just passing out right there, pure exhaustion hitting him like a freight train.

“Possibly. You deserved it, though.” Henry leaned down, gently kissing his curved lips. This sight was one of his new favorites: Alex, his toned skin flushed, practically a puddle of giggles beneath him.

Alex flipped him the bird before melting into the kiss. He weakly pulled his boyfriend down, snuggling against him. He’d all but forgotten about his essay, eyes closed the moment he laid still; the poor guy was wiped. It wasn’t terrible by any means, but all his energy was gone.

Carefully grabbing his phone, Henry set an alarm for six AM.

They’d finish that research paper; he was certain of that. With a bit of sleep, Alex would be a writing machine. True, the slightly rushed grammar would be atrocious, but that’s what Henry was there for. Pulling the sheets up over them both, Henry breathed a happy sigh.

“Good night, love.”

wip wednesday let’s go 😏

hi everyone!! today i felt like poopyfart AND i forgot it was wednesday…… anyway, i’m rewriting the first chapter to “your body comes back to me in dreams”.

i woke up from a nap to a bunch of tags, thank you so much @magicandarchery @hgejfmw-hgejhsf @anincompletelist @matherines @happiness-of-the-pursuit @firenati0n @firstsprinces loved seeing your amazing work<3!!!

It happened again. For the 8th time in the past four months— Alex has been counting, keeping a list, marking it on his calendar. He noticed a pattern after the second month. On the nights when he would have the dreams, he noticed himself feeling especially moody, and maybe it was the stress of law school, or the sleepless nights he forced himself to endure studying for the plethora of exams and quizzes, he wasn’t sure what it was at the time.

June suggested it was the full moon, which of course Alex argued by saying he “wasn’t a werewolf”. But ever since she had mentioned that, he began to keep track of the moon’s cycles; noticing that the dreams and the heightened emotions were — in fact— syncing with the full moon. Now, he knew that he wasn’t some kind mythical creature— he wasn’t growing hair in abnormal parts of his body, or growing fangs, and he most certainly did *not* feel like he was going to howl at the moon.

𖤓 Planetary days ?

In various languages, the names of the days of the week are derived from the 7 visible celestial bodies, and English is no exception to this rule: Sunday, Mo(o)nday, Satur(n)day. Certain days like Thursday and Friday took their names from the Norse/Germanic (e.g. Friday from Frigg, Wednesday from Odin/Woden, Thursday from Thor) counterparts to the Greco-Roman gods after which the Planets are named. And through their names, each day is consequently tied to a planet.

On those days, it’s advised to partake in activities related to the ruling planet & incorporate its respective colours into your outfit or surroundings.

𖤓 Planetary hours ?

Not only do days carry individuating temporal flavors, hours do also. The initial hour of each day at sunrise is connected to the corresponding planet, e.g. with today being Wednesday, the first hour was Mercury’s.

The first hour of Monday corresponds to the Moon, Tuesday's first hour to Mars, and so forth. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto do not have individual hours, as only the visible planets are assigned hourly segments.

Hours get assigned in a standard order, called the Chaldean Order. This is the ranking of planets from the slowest- to fastest-moving. The Chaldean Order goes Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury & Moon. Saturn is farthest out & slowest mover, while the Moon is the fastest & closest to earth.

The order is pretty straightforward: if, for example, the last hour was a Mars hour, this hour is a Sun hour. If last hour was Sun hour, this hour is Venus hour; and next hour is Mercury hour. Once Moon hour is over, you restart from scratch, & next hour will be Saturn’s hour and so on. The pattern is predictable.

A planetary day always commences at dawn, not midnight. There are always twelve planetary hours in a day, and twelve planetary hours in a night, which means that you must calculate the total minutes spanning from sunrise to sunset, and then divide that sum by twelve. This calculation will determine the duration of each planetary hour in terms of “clock” time.

Why does this matter? Because days are shorter in winter, & longer in summer, so the length of planetary hours varies from a season to another. Don’t worry though, you don’t have to calculate any of this manually (unless you want to, of course) — there are apps and sites designed to tell you which planetary hour it is. The aforementioned info was just for the culture.

It’s very useful to keep planetary hours in mind when wanting to initiate certain things or to see how certain situations will play out. You don’t have to follow them to a T, but they still proffer a nice framework around which you can structure your day.

Now let’s see what each Planetary hours is good for.

♄ Hour of Saturn ♄

— from experience, anything INITIATED at this hour will experience delays.

— imo, it’s best to utilize this hour to do things that you’ve already initiated previously and that need some more work or refining.

— Great time to engage in physically or mentally hard work.

— If you have to deal with administration work, do it during Saturn's hour.

— Great time to do selfless jobs and activities. Take care of your plants, for example, or spend time with the elderly.

♃ Hour of Jupiter ♃

— Very beneficial hour for philosophical readings, learning in general & satisfying your curiosity.

— Right time to deal with law/justice related matters.

— Great time to do spiritual work.

— Ideal time to seek & offer help (therapy time, for example).

— Beneficial in promoting your work/business & having social meetings (best time to deal with people!).

— Avoid negative thinking during this time as those thoughts will be expanded.

♂ Hour of Mars ♂

— Mars hour is auspicious for starting any project & investing your energies in doing hard work related to said project.

— Perfect time to work out, do some physical training, & practice all kinds of sports.

— Great for practicing for competitive exams — not studying per se, but rather taking mock exams.

— Great time to engage in activities that demand effort.

— A great time to challenge competitors. Just make sure to avoid fights (unless you have it planned out, lol).

— My personal favourite time to go on night rides or motorcycle rides. Consider trying, you won't regret.

☉ Hour of the Sun ☉

— This is the best hour to channel creativity and self expression. Tap into your creativity juices and tackle some of those things you’ve been procrastinating on starting.

— Favourable time to get in touch with figures of authority such as leaders, e.g. if you wanna write a mail to your boss, do it during Sun’s hour.

— Also advantageous when dealing with governmental matters.

— You can also utilize this hour to meditate as the sun represents a source of energy & life force — & pray if it’s your thing, recharge your crystals, etc. It’s a great time to do some occultism in general (remember, the sun rejoices in the 9H).

— And lastly, if you aim to gain recognition in any project, the hour of the sun is the opportune time to initiate it.

♀ Hour of Venus ♀

— As it comes right after sun’s hour, if you started any artistic or creative activity (painting, drawing, etc) during the former, you can keep on doing it during Venus’ hour.

— Best hour to bath/shower and take care of your hair, body & skin.

— Ideal time to get your hair done, do your nails, put on make-up, get dolled up, that sort of things.

— Best time to go out on a date &/or get laid 🫡.

— Great time for shopping, going outside with friends, enjoying yourself basically.

— Beware of overindulgence though.

☿ Hour of Mercury ☿

— Auspicious for writing, blogging, posting on social media.

— Great for trading, purchasing things & initiating short trips.

— Positive time for language learning.

— If you wanna start writing or reading a book or an essay — now is the time.

— Any intellectual activity is encouraged during this hour.

— Best hour when you want to advertise something you made or wrote.

☽︎ Hour of the Moon ☽︎

— Auspicious for travelling, especially short trips.

— Ideal for recalibrative meditation & journaling.

— Great time to practice rejuvenating, stress-relieving & meditative sports such as non-competitive swimming, pilates, yoga.

— Best time to cook and clean.

— You can also use this time to take a relaxing bath.

— It’s crucial not to start anything important during this hour since the mood is very shifty & impermanent so you might end up taking rash decisions you’ll regret. It’s best to just use this time to rest and rewind.

someone recently liked this post and i re-read it and honestly Sly 4 could have potentially been so phenomenal. i'll be the first to admit that i go grr and then zzz (in that order) when someone starts pitching their own idea for an entire game like how we all collectively loathed the announcement for that fanmade game remember that? i'm giving this disclaimer not because this post is gonna be like fanfic or anything but because i'm gonna be suggesting a lot of ideas. so with that out of the way let's briefly discuss the potential of Sly returning in 2013

SP set up such an interesting dynamic between Sly and Carmelita, where he lied first so she lied second but unbeknownst to her he knows she lied. the next game could have focused on that and that alone; at its core, Sly has always been a morality tale and lies are so divisive in terms of ethics. the central theme would be lies, but it wouldn't be explored just through the lens of Sly and Carmelita's relationship. although Bentley knows Sly lied about his amnesia, we never see if Murray does and that'd be interesting to see how someone who wears their heart on their sleeve accepts this (or doesn't). also, instead of getting the bullshit TiT "Sly lied so his gf is really angry with him", when Carmelita confronts him once the truth is out how would Sly bring up her lie? would he use it with spite, kinda like two wrongs don't make a right ? or would he be solemn because despite the lies, their relationship was what they both wanted. Sly and Carmelita's conversations usually follow the consistent pattern of him being witty and flirty and her trying to shut him down, but what if the roles were reversed because of this massive revelation? Carmelita usually has a comeback ready so how does she react when she's caught off guard?

the story would have to deal with the direct aftermath of Carmelita's lie. how would Interpol react when Carmelita pulled up with Sly like 'this is my partner ok' ? and if Barkley accepted this and recruited Sly as an Interpol officer, how would things play out after? in the original post linked above, @pixieluver suggested a tutorial for the game where you play as Sly undergoing police training and i personally find that so genius like can you imagine?? the game starts off with Sly's final Interpol exam or something as the game teaches the player the basics through a police test course and by the end Sly could catch like a breather or something to monologue and catch the player up to speed with the story after the series' 8 year hiatus. it's like undoubtedly an amazing idea

in this imaginary game, Sly has to deal with being on both sides of the law as well as eventually telling Carmelita the truth and the climax would centre around if their relationship could get past this. the exploration between black and white, the grey zone, would be more explicit than ever in the series. what happens when we experience being an Interpol officer through the eyes of Sly? how does he interpret the law and how loosely could he act on his interpretation whilst under his amnesiac facade? he could be more lenient as an authority figure but also him stepping into Carmelita's shoes could bring about some reflection. oh and would he have a shock pistol because i never knew i needed shock pistol/cane combo gameplay until now.

from Carmelita's side, how invested is she in her job? is being a cop part of her personality? can she reduce it down to an occupation and separate it from her personal beliefs? having now experienced the "reality" of being with Sly, would it be more difficult for her to draw the line once shit hits the fan? and circling back to the main theme, is she lying to herself? catching Sly was her career's goal so once she invites him into her personal life, especially in such an intimate capacity, how can she separate the two again? let's bring in the reality of how male-dominated the police force is: maybe Barkley and rest of Interpol are constantly on her case for bringing Sly Cooper into their circle. and maybe they wouldn't buy that Sly is amnesiac.

the main villain could be someone who knows Sly's secret and is threatening to expose him, pressuring him to tell the truth. we've had some pretty evil and ruthless villains in the series but rarely is there an element of mystery, so this could potentially be someone pulling the strings behind the scenes Penelope. let's have a villain who might not be 100% evil, like a sympathetic Justice for All villain à la Ini Miney or Acro. i doubt the gang are the only morally ambiguous characters so why not a villain the player can empathise with but who is also undoubtedly up to not good. we've kind of explored that with Panda King but i feel like after A Cold Alliance it was treated a bit like whatever. anyway, each episode could revolve around getting closer to the truth and finding out the identity of this mastermind by getting rid of his connections, who are like smaller crooks and "bad guys". each level would have the duality of cop missions and classic missions, with Carmelita and Interpol becoming increasingly suspect of Sly.

in closing i want to briefly touch on the fact that this would come out in 2013 instead of TiT: we were really in the midst of the departure from 3D platformers as first person shooters became more and more creative that year (The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, GTA V). maybe Sly 4 coming out back then was a bit premature? like in comparison to the late 2010s/ early 2020s where we saw like a small bump in nostalgia with the Crash trilogy in 2017 or the Sly reference in the new Ratchet and Clank. i don't know if a hiatus longer than 8 years would cause a loss of interest but my brain hurts and my heart aches when i try to think about a world where TiT never came out.

A bit about me

Hello lovely people,

It's at that point now where exams are officially over and it is the start of the proper semester break here at uni. I figured now was as good a time as any to introduce myself to everyone, so let's get going.

To begin with, my name is L, I go by she/they and I'm 19. I live in Australia, where I was born, however, I moved across the country to go to school so I am now living alone on campus (which is its whole other bag of fun).

I'm doing a double degree in politics and law, specialising in economics, where I just finished semester one of my first year. In total, my degree is going to be five years, however, I am taking winter semesters to hopefully reduce that and am also hoping to do my master's after that.

With this degree I hope to become an economic advisor - this is basically part of the team that works for a political party to advise them on policies and actions in specific areas, hence why I'm specialising in economics. I think this is the best way I'm able to apply my love of economics in a way that is applicable and impactful in a system (that being Australian politics) that I think has the power to do great stuff.

I made this studyblr in order to keep accountable to my study patterns and to improve my study techniques. I have improved slightly over the past semester but I hope over this winter course I can set up good habits that I will be able to stick to next semester.

Some of my studyblr inspirations are @collegewithme, @dannypolicy, @myhoneststudyblr, @studyspiration-coffee, @small-town-studyblr, @psyychstudies, @emmastudies. Most of these I follow closely because they are studying courses similar to mine (especially @dannypolicy if you're studying politics they are one of the only blogs I have found so far that consistently posts about these sorts of concepts and it's great), but all of them have great work ethics and incredible insights, plus an aesthetic that I aspire to!

Outside of this studyblr I love to sew and create things: I've been really into knitting recently and have been knitting a lot of beanies and blankets that I give to charity. I love vintage fashion and sew a lot of my own clothes from old patterns I find. I love rock music, especially the Monkees at the moment, and I read a lot.

Despite its name, the ACT Science Test is not really a test of your knowledge of science. You won’t be asked to explain the second law of thermodynamics, or quantum entanglement, or who Galileo was.

It is a test, instead, of your scientific reasoning capabilities. Do you know how to make deductions from data visualizations? Can you spot general trends in charts and graphs? Are you able to parse the similarities and differences between different scientific explanations?

Much like the reading test of the ACT, you’ll be provided multiple passages (6-7, to be precise) that test your ability to read and interpret scientific writing, graphs, and charts.

Because the test does not typically assess prior knowledge, the best way to prepare for it is to take practice tests, identify your difficulties and weaknesses, and get used to the timing of the test.

The timing of this test is a challenge for most students. You get just 35 minutes to answer 40 questions. That leaves you just 52.5 seconds per question. When you take practice tests, make sure to time yourself accordingly.

Answering questions efficiently requires that you be able to zero in on only the information necessary for each question. As you prepare for the exam, you’ll soon find that the test demands a certain kind of critical reading. Specifically, it asks you to cut through what can sometimes seem like a mess of data to find what are often pretty simple solutions.

Take this passage as an example:

If you’re not science minded, the scientific terminology and symbols here might leave your head spinning. You might be intimidated by this passage if you’re unfamiliar with the terms “genotype” and “allele,” and all those capital and lower-case S’s and G’s likely cause at least a bit of confusion if you’re trying to read silently to yourself.

But remember: this isn’t so much a test of your scientific knowledge as of your scientific reasoning skills.  For the questions that follow, there is no advantage to knowing what a genotype or an allele is. In fact, replace those with terms of your choosing, if it makes things easier.

Now, let’s look at a couple of questions:

1. Based on Table 1, which of the following crosses would produce only spherical, yellow peas?

A. ssgg × ssgg B. SsGg × SsGg C. SSgg × SSgg D. SSGg × SSGG

In answering this question, make sure to keep things simple. Intelligent students sometimes get overly speculative with a question like this one by introducing complications to the information provided: What if an ssgg genotype mixed with another ssgg genotype somehow produces a totally different shape and color? How do I know it couldn’t? This is a stupid question!

If you’re one of those students, turn off the curious, expansive part of your brain and keep things grounded. This question is far too simple for you, and you need to come down to its level.

In fact, to answer this first question, you really only need a first grader’s ability to match letters with shapes and colors. It’s really that simple. The trick here is finding simplicity in what might seem to be a bog of complexity.

Give the question a try on your own before reading on.

To keep things simple, take notes next to each answer choice. The first thing you should notice is that there’s a very simple consistency across choices A through C. All three list the same genotypes twice, a pattern that would result in a consistent shape and color combination. The exception is choice D, but once you match these genotypes with Table 1, you’ll see that both genotypes listed there belong to the same shape and color category. Here are the results:

A. ssgg × ssgg = dented, yellow B. SsGg × SsGg = spherical, green C. SSgg × SSgg = spherical, yellow D. SSGg × SSGG = spherical, green

The answer, of course, is choice C.

Here’s another question:

5. Which of the following crosses would produce the greatest fraction of dented, green peas?

A. ssgg × SSGG B. ssGG × SSgg C. SsGg × SsGg D. SsGG × ssGG

Again, all you have to do at first is turn these genotype symbols into their equivalent shapes and colors. Think kindergarten, not college.

A. ssgg × SSGG = dented, yellow x spherical, green B. ssGG × SSgg = dented, green x spherical, yellow C. SsGg × SsGg = spherical, green x spherical, green D. SsGG × ssGG = spherical, green x dented, green

How do you figure out the genotype distribution for each of these choices? The nice thing is that you don’t have to, really.

Look back at Table 2. There you have the results of a spherical, green genotype mixed with a dented, yellow genotype. The result is an even 25% distribution across each of the four shape and color combinations. The test thus tips you off to choices A and B.

As for choice C: you’re obviously not going to get any dented, green from two spherical genotypes.

A. ssgg × SSGG = dented, yellow x spherical, green (25% dented, green) B. ssGG × SSgg = dented, green x spherical, yellow (25% dented, green) C. SsGg × SsGg = spherical, green x spherical, green (0% dented, green) D. SsGG × ssGG = spherical, green x dented, green

That leaves us to figure out choice D. Again, no need to make a new table. Look back at Table 2. Notice how half the offspring are dented and half are spherical? Choice D would give us the same distribution in regards to shape, since one genotype is dented and the other is spherical.

The only difference between Table 2 and choice D is that choice D would produce no yellow offspring. Focusing on shape first, then color is an example of finding simplicity among what might seem chaotic. Keep it as simple as possible.

Since choice D would produce no yellow offspring, we’re left with this distribution:

D. SsGG × ssGG = spherical, green x dented, green (50% spherical, green x 50% dented, green)

50 is bigger than 25. Twice as big, even. So, the answer is D.

Easy, right? Or at least you can see now how simple these questions really are.

Not every question on the ACT Science Test is this simple, but most are. (Though question 4 from this passage, featured in Elite’s ACT Science materials, does require you know the meaning of “homozygous” and “heterozygous,” which isn’t as difficult as it might seem.)

The trick here and throughout much of the test is to sort through complexity to find simplicity.

While your English teachers might get you to look intensely at every word in a poem, this test asks you to separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak—that is, to find only that information that is necessary for each question.

It’s a particular skill that you’ll need to sort through the complexities and opportunities of college life … and to ace the ACT Science Test.

Miku never really requested her presence in the Empty SEKAI, so when the gray-pigtailed girl had appeared on her phone’s screen in the middle of her study session, she found the specific song file at once and felt herself be transported through the digital screen. She had many exams to focus on as the school year started to wrap up, but a break wouldn’t hurt her. Besides, her parents were out of the house and wouldn’t be back until evening, so it wasn’t like they could catch her away from the books.

She didn’t care much to bring the books with her. They hadn’t even crossed her mind as the SEKAI started to form in her vision— and when her sight had come back to her, she immediately knew why Miku had called her here.

It was snowing.

The puffs of white seeped into her jeans and through her slippers. It should be freezing here— according to the laws of physics and climate, she should need a jacket— but she didn’t mind it. If anything, it was just a tad… surprising.

That was the best she could come up with.

Miku was there, right in front of her, eyes focused on the dull sky above filled with dim triangles, and now soft drops of snow. Her attire hadn’t changed in the slightest for this new weather, and it briefly crossed Mafuyu’s mind that she had never seen any of the Vocaloids in here with any costume change that their music group hadn’t brought in.

“Mafuyu,” Miku whispered quietly, like she was afraid of scaring off the seasonal snow, “It’s cold.”

Mafuyu remembered when Miku first asked about the snow of the outside world. It was her online alias, after all— Yuki, meaning snow— and her real first name meant midwinter. Moreover, it had been snowing when she first decided to post her cover of Kanade’s work online. Of course Miku wanted to know more about it. She could only see it, but she couldn’t feel it, hold it, or play in it, so she had to rely on Mafuyu for a description.

She had said it was cold, like her world. Miku had never felt temperature like that, but somehow, she was sure she understood. Now, she could experience it at a whole new level.

Mafuyu didn’t say anything in response to her observation. She stood there, watching Miku gaze around with her childlike wonder. When she was a child, she might have played around in the snow during the winter time, all bundled up with rosy cheeks and a big smile, but that joy was lost on her now. The snow should freeze around her, suffocating under the abyss of her heart.

It didn’t. The snow fell down as it normally would in the real world. Miku cupped her hand and lifted it up to the sky, bringing it down with the utmost care when something had fallen in it and cradled it to her chest. “What’s this?”

“It’s a snowflake,” she replied. “They say no two patterns are the same.”

Miku stared down at it, mouth parted open ever so slightly, like she was afraid of breaking it with a single breath. “It’s pretty,” she said. “Ah—”

Mafuyu tilted her head.

She held her palms out toward her, now devoid of any crystals except for a slight shine. “It’s gone.”

“You melted it,” she replied. “The heat of your hands caused the snow to change from a solid to a liquid.” Miku fixed her eyes on her, and Mafuyu wasn’t sure if she looked curious, sad, or devoid of anything, but she found herself continuing, anyway. “It wasn’t going to last long even if you didn’t melt it. All the snow here will melt when it gets hot enough.”

Miku kept her stare for a few more seconds, maybe even a minute or two. Mafuyu wasn’t counting, and she didn’t particularly mind. “But… I helped melt it, even if it was small.”

It was often that Miku needed confirmations like this. “Yes,” she replied, how she was used to, how Miku expected her to.

Mafuyu wasn’t sure what had gone through Miku’s mind, but the Vocaloid singer started to raise her arms up once more, collecting more and more snowflakes. She stepped gently in the snow like a robotic dancer doing her best to be human as she spun around, held them close, and watched them melt.

Something stirred in her chest as she watched Miku experience cold and curiosity and beauty all at the same time. Did she want something like that, to play in the snow once more and admire the mountains with a smile?

Miku stepped closer and closer to her, tracing a pattern with her footprints. A snowflake landed on Miku’s nose when she was just inches away from her, and she knew if she was anyone else that she would have had to stifle a chuckle watching her go cross-eyed at it.

Before she could watch her continue collecting, though, a pair of sturdy arms wrapped around her. Gray, fluffy hair blocked half her vision and remained there as she felt Miku lean into her.

“It must have snowed here for a reason,” Miku spoke, falling still with her hold around the girl.

“Yes,” Mafuyu replied, “it’s winter.”

She saw and felt Miku shake her head. “No. I think the SEKAI wants to show me… that you’re capable of melting.”

She squeezed tighter, in a way that didn’t hurt, that Mafuyu would be comfortable saying she was fine with.

Miku gazed up at her, just a tiny bit. “Is it working?”

Warmth suddenly blossomed in her heart, like she had been wrapped up in a blanket. Mafuyu wasn’t too sure how to describe it. It was as if she had stepped into a warm bath, but her limbs were still stuck in the air conditioning of the house, and when she realized this, she found her arms wrapping around the Vocaloid to complete their hug.

It was… nice.

“Miku… Can we stay like this for a little while longer?”

Her hum carried the melodic lull of a talented singer. “Of course.”
