Behind the scenes images of Stephen Geoffreys having prosthetics applied to him as his turn as the unlucky Evil Ed in Fright Night (1985)
Steve Johnson wished Evil Ed's transformation to be lumpy and 'asymmetrical' in contrast to the transformations in American Werewolf in London and The Howling. Geoffreys would spend 18 hours in the makeup chair as prosthetics were applied to his whole body. He had to take sleeping pills to pass out the time away!
For filming the transformation, Geoffreys would have to sit with his back against the set wall, which had a hole for a puppeteer to operate the rod-puppet wolf arm, as well as holes in the set's floor for another puppeteer to operate the rod-puppet wolf legs. Geoffreys would wear a neck appliance with the wolf head as a 'hat'; he could see out from holes in the neck, and the head was fitted with cable-operated animatronics allowing it to blink and grimace.

Fright Night (1985, dir. Tom Holland) had its costumes designed by Robert Fletcher, most famous for being costume designer on the first four Star Trek films and The Last Starfighter.
However it's a bit hard to know what was bought or bespoke made for Fright Night, I'm surprised there isn't more information on Fright Night's costumes anyway! Roddy McDowall's 'Peter Vincent' mock-period costume definitely was bespoke made. As for his other outfits, such as his floral print smoking jacket, hard to say. Could have been bespoke, could have been rented from period stock or bought.
Chris Sarandon surprisingly is pretty stylish as the vampire Jerry Dandridge despite mostly wearing grey; his turtleneck tweed sweater with the curved sewing pattern is my favourite. His grey leather (or vinyl?) overcoat with wide lapels and red scarf is also surprisingly a style look. And I included his collared shirt and crew neck jumper just for completion's sake. No idea if these were bespoke or bought.
Stephen Geoffreys' as Evil Ed also gets to wear some uncommon fits; first a red jacket with raised shoulders (taking inspiration from Michael Jackson's Thriller jacket?) and collar suspenders, and then wearing a grey and black cavalry shirt under his bomber jacket later on.

just watched fright night (the 1985 one ofc) and I'm laughing my ass off thinking about the aftermath. like surely the neighbors heard the commotion. and what does ed do after all that?? I'm imagining that he just goes back to school with a wide-brim hat and tons of sunscreen and acts like nothing happened but one day in class he shoots charley the EVILEST vampiric grin but he transforms his face back so fast that no one else sees it. everyone else just thinks he's gone goth and/or that his new behavior is just part of his regular weirdness. his bullies do have a tendency to get night terrors or just straight-up disappear though

Dracula Daily post anyone ?
So I found out yesterday there is a recent Fright Night novel, aptly dubbed Fright Night: Origins, which was written by the OG films creator, Tom Holland (yeah, the name threw me off when I remembered it too) making it 100% canon to the original movie.
Tumblr media
In it, Vlad the Impaler is featured in connection to Jerry Dandridge's (or "Gellert") backstory. The novel is recent so I won't go too much into this. It is also the first of a trilogy expanding on Fright Night’s universe, with an upcoming movie following the original in the works.
Tumblr media
What some of you may not know is that another 80's vampire prequel uses Vlad, this time as the main antagonist. A prequel to The Lost Boys, also dubbed Origins, covering the origins of the titular vampires. A full script was written in the 90's, but never went into production.
Tumblr media
TLDR ? Count All-But-Stated-To-Be-Dracula was the vampire who turned and corrupted David and his gang; plotted to take over the country, only to be killed by David after causing his love interest to commit suicide. The Count's brother steps in and took over Santa Carla...only to run a video store by 1987.
Tumblr media
I bring this up, just to point out there's two 80's vampire movie prequels out there, that tie Dracula to the villains of the original movies.

Finished the novelization! Here’s some details
The way this book is written is so fucking horny for no reason. The amount of illusion and metaphors and using sex as metaphors. It shouldn’t be as funny as it is but just- anyway. There’s a lot of interesting details in here as well as slightly concerning ones- regardless

Jerry has the power to turn men gay and I respect him for it (the amount of times everyone gushes over how hot he is). Also how many times billy is like —- yeah, “partners” alright 👀

Also vampire lore! Thanks Jerry . Also vampire angst and Billy is old

Oh, my God! I'm so thick headed... I never noticed this. Evil Ed (who is coded to be gay in the original Fright Night and played by gay actor, Stephen Geoffreys) was resentful of Charlie's relationship with Amy because HE had a crush on Charlie, his childhood friend.
I saw so many subtle Queer overtones and references in Fright Nigh but never caught on that Ed might have feelings for Charlie. It makes so much sense!

Some of the prosthetic makeup sculpts devised by Richard Edlund's Boss Film Studios for Stephen Geoffreys, Amanda Bearse and Chris Sarandon in Fright Night (1985).
Effects artist Steve Johnson wished for the prosthetic makeup on Goeffreys as Evil Ed to be 'a little Quasimodo', uneven and lumpy. Johnson had always been bugged by how 'symmetrical' the American Werewolf in London and Howling transformations were, and wanted to do his own spin.
Chris Sarandon had three stages of makeup applied to him to represent his monstrous states; Steve Neill was assigned to do the makeup, but was persuaded by an eager Randall William Cook into letting him do the final (and most monstrous) makeup stage.
Amanda Bearse's 'shark mouth' mask was a last minute job requested by Tom Holland; Randy Cook sculpted a simple latex mask for Bearse to wear, believing that it would only be used for one brief shot. He was embarrassed when it turned out it didn't just get used for several shots, but became the most iconic image of the film!

Sincerely hope Evil Ed knows how much I love his crazy ass
Reading the novelization to fright night gives SO much on his character and honestly. He’s just a funky little dude. The weird kid ™️ and he’s so beyond queer coded (beyond his actor putting his own work into it) Even in the text itself. Poor kid gets bullied/ostracized for a multitude of this
I love his “billy idol” cut and his horror filled room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also Charley calling him Eddie when he’s much more sincere? My heart - also why is every coded motherfucker in horror Named eddie? There’s like eight at this point that I know of.
