Ateez's Full Storyline Explained - Part 2

Masterlist

Inception (A-World)

As already implied by the song title, the entire MV takes place inside a dreamscape which gives us some leeway when interpreting the imagery

Additionally, it also helps us align it with the storyline: we're seeing the time right before their reunion, meaning they've already parted ways quite some time ago and are now beginning to forget about each other, just like Hongjoong described in the Outro

We open on Yeosang in the violin practice room which we already know he doesn't feel at home in before we cut to the classroom we saw San in in the Diary Film

We see Seonghwa in a room reminiscent of a detective's office; a place in his dream that likely represents his search for the 'Be Free' girl

Yunho is in his brother's old room/recording studio while Wooyoung is in the parking garage where his solo dance-battle took place

Hongjoong, of course, is in their shared hideout and San in his room which is already filled with packed boxes - his family's move to another city is imminent

We then get to see Jongho on the burning basketball court and Mingi trapped in a decrepit hallway - likely a reflection of his mental state which must have been worsening since he parted ways with the only people he ever felt fully accepted by

As the song continues, the lyrics become more desperate, speaking of a "you" they're desperately chasing after in their dreams, a "you" they cannot live without because it would mean going back to the way thinks were and they cannot bear the thought of continuing to walk in circles whenever they're awake

The dream around them begins to warp, the classroom floods, their surroundings are set ablaze (sick-ass use of practical effects by the way - it's so stunning)

In order to determine who this "you" is, we only have to look at what we already know: what are they missing that they previously had? Each other. A shared dream of making music and performing. A place to call home where they felt comfortable, loved, and accepted. That's their "you".

As the song then keeps building and the chaos in the dreamworld keeps escalating as a result of their powerful emotions, Hongjoong finds himself confronted with his own body asleep in a bed at the end of the hallway

He sprints toward it and jumps, diving through his own body and the bed into a dark empty space (once again, the visuals in this MV, the camera work - ah, so stunning)

His actions result in everyone waking up back in their own beds

We get some final glimpses of the chaos that had been going on in the dreamscape: the books flying around Yeosang in the practice room, the fire in Seonghwa's room and a familiar shot of Hongjoong in the warehouse which we could already see in the Diary Film

He's surrounded by floating objects, a gravitational anomaly that will later become associated with the travel between realities (for more info on that, you can read on chronologically in the masterlist or go straight to my entry on the Cromer)

The final shot is of Hongjoong alone in the dark empty space.

Now that he's awake, he feels lonely again, without a family

He does not yet know that he'll soon meet a man in a black fedora in his dream and be reunited with his family

about mahiru's day 16 outfit

Some one might've already done this, but I wanted to share my thoughts about Mahiru's day 16 outfit! this has been on my mind ever since I Love You dropped

But doesn't Mahiru's outfit kinda resemble her 2nd MV??

I'll try my best to make this understandable

First of all! Her blue dress!

It's light-blue with splotches of white and greenish-yellow... roses? are those roses? I could make out leaves and something that resembles a flower with densely arranged petals. It may or may not be roses but it's definitely a plant.

And you know, it kinda reminds of something. Blue skies with petals floating in the wind.

Or maybe even blue skies and rolling fields of grass!

Like Microsoft's Bliss:

Yes, I associate Bliss with Mahiru's blue dress.

Bliss is also called "Bucolic Green Fields". I do find the two to be such fitting names for the picture. Bliss means "complete happiness or joy" while bucolic pertains to an idyllic or idealized country life. And the picture does invoke such feelings.

It's calm and peaceful. It feels like an escape from your problems and worries, like a dream, or an illusion.

And then there's her cardigan!

It's over her blue dress and it's dark violet!!

It's a darkness that looms over a dream of bliss, perhaps the truth of her situation...

Basically it's just:

Mahiru's blue dress = her "dreamworld": the pink carousel (could extend to her birdcage in TIHTBILWY)

Mahiru's cardigan = the "real world": the forest + the dark carousel

I do believe this is one of the reasons Mahiru keeps getting portrayed in her day. 16 outfit. It's very symbolic to her character.

Eye love you

Quick look at Mahiru’s eyes in Daisuki / I love you. I’m assuming we’re all familiar with the metaphor of having your eyes shut meaning you’re oblivious to a problem, blind to an issue, willfully or not.

The first shot of her has her face and eyes obscured, and then cuts to a close up. She starts with her eyes closed, barely in frame, then opens them.

One of her eyes is almost always semi-transparent behind her hair. She never has a clear, unobstructed view.

Her eyes stay closed until she lies down on the couch in the ruined world-

-then opens them to her idealized lovey dovey world. We get her POV and an animation of her eyes opening.

Her eyes and her boyfriends eyes are open (except for when he blinks but I don’t think that counts), both of them happy, and then both of their eyes shut while hugging. Neither of them are looking at each other.

While eating the cake, the boyfriend is looking at her while Mahiru’s eyes stay closed. She does open her eyes in the next shot, before taking a bite, but then immediately closes them again.

Her eyes remain open in this dreamworld section as she and her boyfriend hold hands and ride the carousel. At some points, both of their heads are out of frame.

Her eyes are open here, but the dreamy carousel horses stay intact and she doesn’t change expression from the previous fully romanticized shot. While walking, the camera obscures their faces again.

She turns, eyes open. The next shot as she’s taking in her boyfriend’s state, the camera cuts just as we would see her eyes. .

Seriously, I went frame by frame, it changes view exactly as we would have seen her eyes if it kept panning up.

Open eyes, but in the closeup they’re slightly out of frame.

Closed in both worlds. Notably, her boyfriend’s eyes have become obscured by shadows and remain that way. His eyes have open for the rest of the MV, excluding them hugging and brief blinking.

Open eyed, but all...weird and swirly pink? Rose colored, if you will. This is the last shot we get of Mahiru, and while her eyes are opened, they’re not normal. Mahiru’s eyes aren’t actually pink and she’s never drawn this way.

While yes it might just be animation and her smiley expressions, I think this MV uses eyes opened VS closed to represent looking at the situation. Mahiru keeps them closed for a significant portion of the runtime, before taking a long, surprised look at her disheveled love.

She closes them again after this, while actually feeding her boyfriend - she’s not looking at him or what she’s doing. The only time her eyes are opened while feeding/doing whatever terrible thing the feeding represents is when the camera is in the boyfriend’s perspective, looking up at her and her wonky, strangely colored eyes.

When she’s the one in control, she never truly sees what she’s doing.

Ok so right now I'm thinking of the various dimensions in the ATEEZ lore as a series of layers, that a character discovers as they get more involved in the plot. Like how dreams in the movie Inception are structured, since Ateez made so many connections to the movie in their song Inception for a reason. Additionally, this order of dimensions I'm about to talk about is structured mostly as a model for how events seem to take place in this narrative, from dimensions that have the most influence over other dimensions and the characters that cause most events, to those that have the least (as far as we know right now). I'm not really sure yet what exact metaphysical form the different dimensions take.

So at the moment, what seems to be the core of the multidimensional mv universe is the dystopia from where Halateez hails. That's where the music videos and performances have been making allusions to this entire time, and where this next comeback is explicitly set. It's where there's technology to lengthen human lives and keep them controlled, a government determined to suppress human emotion, and a revolution waiting to happen.

Just outside of this dimension is where a few fantasy dimensions exist. It's a bit early to tell what order these dimensions are in or how exactly they tie with the others, but in terms of most to least influence, they come next. These dimensions have the adventurous world of the pirates and their journey, and the dreamworld utopia of Eternal Sunshine. The music videos that featured these dimensions didn't come with a lot of directly stated background information the way the others did, so they're the source of most theorytinys' questions and speculation. I think they could be here to show examples of other personas the characters can have, who may eventually help with the main plot; as a distraction from the main plot, to try to keep the characters from accomplishing their goals; to teach the characters important lessons for their main quest, simultaneously introducing new themes of the narrative; as a way for the main Ateez group and Halateez to communicate with eachother without being watched; or a combination of these.

Next, we have a dimension that seems similar to our own, where the main Ateez group hails from. I call them the main Ateez group because they're the ones that are introduced to us individually, and with the members' real names. This is where the story chronologically seems to start, and the main group travels to the other dimensions from here. Here, things mainly seem to happen *to* the characters, until Hongjoong uses the Cromer and takes everyone to the core. This dimension seems a lot like our own: until the Cromer is brought from Halateez's dimension, there is no magic or outlandish technology, and the characters' problems seem a lot like the problems any student in the 21st century could potentially have. In fact, the storylines written for the characters in this dimension were based on the members' actual experiences. Which brings me to:

Real life. Our actual dimension, outside of the screens. We as an audience mainly watch and listen to things happen, with little power to impact the events in a story that the producers have already written. However, that doesn't stop Halateez from trying to reach out to us through physical posters and blink-and-you'll-miss-it social media posts. We're the ones being asked to "wake up" now that Halateez has reached out to their allies in the fictional dimensions that surround their world. Because this dimension may host the audience that treats the other dimensions as fictional, but it hosts the inspirations that sparked the ideas for the story, as well. And so the narrative influences wrap back around to the center in a multidimensional doughnut.

They didn't promote on variety this time.

FACTS !

It was supposed to be a subunit release but changed to full group once they realized the girls' vocal color.

An unknown girl in the mv brought fans to believe it is a new member of the group

Yubin felt a little self conscious about doing a cute concept due to her image always being cool and cold.

Chaewon injured her voice while recording dream girls which almost lead to her not being included in the album.

OMG, can I just share that I got so emotional from just this short teaser? T_T

Music Monday #186: ATEEZ - Eternal Sunshine release: October 2021 genre: Kpop

When I started planning this entry last night, I really was going to feature someone else. I hadn't entirely decided on who, but I intended there to be a bit more space between my beloveds. And then my brain decided to do me dirty and my anxiety went a bit off the rails and then the pre-birthday for Jongho started on Twitter (10.12, so tomorrow, but since it's already tomorrow in Korea....) and, well, here we are. Behold my ridiculous ATEEZ bias, let me show it to you~ ;)

As I mentioned when writing up "Deja Vu," "Eternal Sunshine" was the other candidate for lead title track for ZERO : FEVER part 3 and as the B-title, it's distinctly different from "Deja Vu," being a very bright, light-hearted summery track that feels rather innocent in comparison. With an up-tempo beat and breezy dance moves, colorful visuals, and lyrics about a sweet, pure love, it's maybe a little out of season - it feels much more like summer than mid-autumn, even with the snow in the MV - but at the same time also perfectly suited to ATEEZ's youthful concept. They've finished their first week of show promotions and every stage has been a joy to watch because you can tell the guys are having a blast, playing around with the choreo in ways that are both planned and not so planned. Of course this wouldn't be an ATEEZ post if I didn't bring up the whole lore thing. A lot of the visuals feel like a call back to the Treasure-era MV "Illusion" ... which of course sets my brain to churning. Illusion is blatantly Pirateez, but it's a dreamworld - nothing in the meat of that video actually happens, as best as I can figure? It's a dream they're sharing (or maybe that Hongjoong is having alone) post-Treasure and pre-Wave - the post-action scene in Illusion is quick shots from the body of Wave and Wave brings us back to the normal world of Normal/Heroteez. The post-action scene in Eternal Sunshine is especially dream-like, which then poses the interesting question: with Eternal Sunshine marking the end of Fever-era, does this mean our heroes have fallen asleep again? Or, since Fever-era was intended to be flashback, fallen asleep for the first time? To be honest, I'd probably need to do a deeper review of the lore on a day when I'm not firing on less than 5hours of sleep and sinus pressure from an oncoming storm front to really sort things out. And even then, I'm not sure how much successful untangling I'd manage, given how bad ATEEZ are about giving out crumbs out of sequence, leaving theorycrafting Atiny to revise all our theories yet again with each comeback. BTS Blood, Sweat & Tears (Japanese Version) Theory

*Do read my previous theory before reading this as it may help in understanding.

1. Jungkook gets up from the bed in a room which has a window.

This is significant as he has woken up from his dream (I will explain later on)

2. Taehyung’s flashback where he rubs his eyes and looks extremely distraught

This is significant as it depicts him waking up from this dream (Let me continue)

3. Jungkook bed have wings imprinted on it.

Links to his Begin short film where he is associated with the bird sparrowhawk (refer to my theory on begin) The symbolism of wings when he got up from the bed emphasises on his break free of his fantasy (Refer to point 1)/ his realisation of the dream he is in.

4. Jin looking at the hell & heaven portrait again ( refer to my bst korean ver theory)

Then the scene zooms in into the portrait and have 2 holes due to the opera glasses Jin look through. I am assuming that the 2 circles represent 2 scenarios.

a) What is it like in heaven/dream world

b)What is it like in hell/ reality

5. Jimin removed Suga hands, suggesting that Jimin is sick of being protected by Suga and forbidding him to see the actual truth. Now Jimin is facing reality unlike in the korean version where he is seen blindfold/covered.

(I cannot emphasise more to read my previous theories to understand my stand.)

6. He runs from Suga. Suga doesn’t chase him.

The link to Suga’s first love short film is seen here with the piano.

Jimin have finally seen the truth and hates on Suga for not allowing him to see the reality earlier.

7. Namjoon and Jungkook where Namjoon force feed Jungkook the inky drink.

Now, This is the drink that made Jungkook hallucinate and at the start of the mv Jungkook finally wakes up from drinking this drink that make him dream/hallucinate of the surreal realm/heavens/dreamworld. The exact goes for Namjoon, to seek comfort in the dream world.

8. Same thing, the apple is the one that doesn’t allow Jimin to be able to see the reality/evil in the world.

9. Jungkook rushes to the toilet with Suga behind him.

Suga trying to snap Jungkook out of it but was pushed away.

The struggle between wanting to know the truth and being afraid of it is vividly displayed in this scene.

10. Jimin and Jungkook, now knowing the truth, desperately tries to grab a hold of Taehyung with Hoseok trying to shoot a dart at him.

Let’s bring Taehyung’s killing of his father back, and Hoseok shooting arrows at him in BST Korean ver. (Again, read my BST theory)

Hoseok is trying to shoot or kill or eradicate the evil in Taehyung (Taehyung was the fallen angel/ abraxas which processes the qualities of both good and evil)

To prevent Taehyung from committing the crime and getting caught in his Stigma short film, knowing what would have happened, they tried to stop him before Taehyung could actually do what he did since this is the “dream world” and things may turn out to be better.

11. But no. Hoseok shoots nothing but water because what happened in reality cannot be change, only in dreams.

12. Taehyung flinches but nothing happens because this is but a dream.

13. Hoseok threw his medication which links to I NEED YOU.

Well he finally didn’t have to take his medication but is it really true? no.

This is again the dream/fantasized world so in actually fact he has to still take medication ( remember his short film on MAMA ? nothing but pills and mental illness)

14. Jin and Taehyung fighting scene.

In the prologue, Taehyung kill his father and called Hyung, that Hyung is Jin.

Why did suga said “Mianhae” at the part?

Jin is sorry he couldn’t make it in time to stop the tragedy from happening.

He would have punch to stop Taehyung from harbouring such evil/immoral thoughts if he had the chance, now Taehyung kind of kills Jin/ attempted murder, is this because Evil nature of humans can never be eliminated, not even in a fantasy. Since this whole story surrounds the theme of “boy meets evil”

15. Jimin and Hoseok dancing under the portrait of the Heaven and hell under red and blue lights.

i am assuming this. This emphasises the contrasting themes of good vs evil.

Red= Devil= Hell

Blue=Sky=Heaven

16. Jimin runs away from Suga and find himself in a room

(The one scene that every ARMY is curious and absolutely confused)

The Jimin that opens the door is the Jimin that knows about the reality/truth/evil

The Jimin that have his sight blocked by Suga is the fantasy/dream

Not convince? Look at their clothes.

Suga tried to protect Jimin from the reality/evil but it’s no longer possible, since another Jimin had known the truth and thus, he drops the apple that has kept him in his fantasy.

17. Breaking out of hallucination/fantasy.

a) Jimin that knows reality getting pull out of the dreamworld through the colourful but sinister time travel tunnel.

b) Jungkook regaining his consciousness

c)Ground cracking = cracking of fantasy

d) hoseok in his mental outfit = he never get to stop taking medication/was never cured of his illness

e) Where water doesn’t push Jin into it which only happens in dream

f) Final scene of glass breaking concludes this idea of dream/fantasy being broken.

18. So, throwback to I need you.

Namjoon and Jin met at the Gas station with Jin stating “Long time no see.”

This means that the boys had went their separate ways i believe in i need you era and since then, the boys were overcoming their troubles in their short films which led them to realise the evils of the world ( Boy meets evil ). So, to safely put it, from this MV Jin and Namjoon are the ones that are strong enough to cope with their troubles and overcome it, maybe because their trouble isn’t too major to begin with.

In conclusion, this MV focuses on the other possible or surreal(too good to be true) outcome. The boys had to struggle between reality and fantasy. But in the end reality beats fantasy. What has been done, cannot be undone, only in your dreams. I believe the moral of the MV from BTS is to never stay stuck in the past and move on even if the world is an absolutely corrupt and evil place thus, it ends on a good note with Namjoon and Jin interaction.
