In the latest trope talk you used Odo as part of your examples. I think You've talked about Star Trek: The Next Generation before but not Deep Space Nine and I just had some questions about what you thought about the show.
What did you most/least enjoy about the series?
What did you think of DS9's syndicated episodes compared to contemporary trek's (TNG, VOY) episodic nature?
How do you feel about the Dominion storyline as a whole? Did you feel like it went against Star Trek's utopian future?
Which characters stood out to you the most/had the most engaging development?
What do you think gagh tastes like?
Any other thoughts about the series?
Tumblr media
Oh man, DS9.
I have this very consistent pattern of thinking that the star trek I have most recently watched is the best star trek. When I watched TNG it was the best because of its standout episodes that let Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner show off. Then when I watched Voyager it was the best because Janeway was incredible and 7 of 9's arc was a beautiful iteration on the "inhuman character explores humanity" star trek trope. Then when I got to DS9 I was like "Oh, so this is what actually good Star Trek looks like." I do think I'm actually right this time, though.
I think they really took advantage of how different the core premise of the show was from previous Star Treks. Because the setting was very consistent, the episodic variations on the formula weren't dedicated to seeking out Weird New Shit, but to focusing on the characters and their dynamics with one another. Correspondingly I think the best thing in the show is the character writing and how everyone's arcs are built up. This was something I think they were building towards with the previous series; TNG would occasionally have character-focused episodes, but for the most part everybody on the ship operated like a well-oiled machine, inputting the Weird Thing Of The Week and outputting a solution. Voyager destabilized the formula by yeeting the heroes halfway across the galaxy and well outside the safe confines of federation space, so you got a lot more opportunities for drama caused by limited supplies or existential despair, and a lot more character-driven conundrums without clean or flawless solutions. DS9 is kind of the apotheosis of this shift away from "seek out new life and new civilizations, boldly go etc etc" because instead of our heroes briefly interacting with Bajor and then fucking off into the end credits, they're sitting right on top of a planet undergoing tumultuous social restructuring after the end of a long and horrible military occupation, and they're there for 7 seasons. Because they aren't following an adventure-of-the-week formula, absolutely everything they do has consequences they have to deal with later down the line, and that lends itself very well to longform character arcs.
I liked the Dominion storyline well enough, and I think the existence of an evil space empire to fight doesn't preclude the Federation being a utopia. Utopias are internally perfect systems, not worlds that have absolutely no conflict. I think the part of DS9 that does undercut the utopia is the whole thing with Section 31, but I think that's part of a very intentional move on the writers' part to highlight that Section 31 is not as necessary as they think they are, and that doing all this stuff unethically is a moral concession and a shortcut that demeans the principles of the Federation. That's part of why I like that they serve as a nemesis to Doctor Bashir, who has very personal reasons to despise the idea of taking the easy way out.
Character-wise, I have very predictable favs. Jadzia Dax is fascinating to me, and I love the way they play with her past lives and centuries of experience to create this very layered character packed with plothooks. Also I have very simple tastes, and "woman fills narrative Man Role trope and nobody is weird about it" is an itch I so rarely get scratched despite how not complicated it is. Jadzia gets to be a swashbuckling romantic hero with a tragic starcrossed lover; she gets to be a wise yet cheerful mentor to Captain Sisko; she gets to be a noble warrior honoring debts from a lifetime ago. And I adore how her dynamic with Sisko plays out over the seasons - another completely uncomplicated trope I so rarely get to enjoy, male and female leads who are profoundly ride-or-die for one another and have absolutely no interest in making out. I am still so mad about how Jadzia gets iced, but that doesn't mean I don't like Ezri, and there is something very beautiful about how when she gets Dax'd and her existence becomes an absolute mess of confusion and conflicting memories and she doesn't even know who she is anymore, her single point of stability is Sisko.
That said, Garak is probably my overall fav. The man is an absolute drama hound and since he's not technically main cast it's a rare treat to get him focused on. He is so much fun on a rewatch when you can see exactly when and how he's lying and when he's telling the truth in a way that everyone thinks is lying, and what I think is most interesting about him is how absolutely everybody else on the station has him figured out. There's this "I know he knows I know they know" loop underlying almost every interaction. Everyone knows he's a spy, he knows everyone knows, and they're all just vibing anyway. It's like his entire character is built on telling the truth in a way that sounds like a lie, to the point where it always manages to surprise people when he does something absolutely ruthless. He's been saying he's a bad guy the whole time! People seem to keep forgetting!
Also, fun fact, the very first chunk of DS9 I caught was the back half of the episode "The Wire", and when I was mentioning this to my dad, I was like "yeah I don't remember their names but these two guys seemed extremely married-" and he immediately went "oh, Garak and the doctor?" so that's very telling I think

In your bugstuck au, you said that lime-bloods have resurfaced on another planet in the Empire. Does this mean that there are other Nursery Worlds in the Empire other than Alternia itself, or does each planet have their own 'Kid Sector' where children are raised before assimilating into adult society?
THANKS for the great question!! Sorry for the long answer but i might have mispoken or changed my headcannons; limebloods have re-emerged in colonies outside The Empire. Propaganda denies the existence of the multiple settlements outside of their domains, but this is untrue. As a result of one of these cultures deconstructing casteism and allowing their Jadebloods freedom to live outside the convents and reproduce, a few young limebloods have hatched!
CAESER and CALIGULA are a pair of planets locked in BINARY ROTATION with each other. These planets were colonized by gold-blooded helmsman revolutionaries. The helmsman and their allies planned and collected all they needed from ALTERNIA and elsewhere settle the planets, then one goldblood sacrificed his life to create a powerful psychic barrier around the planets. He was posthumously declared the GOLDEN EMPEROR. No seadwellers were trusted by the revolutionaries, and as a result no violet or fuschia bloods live there. The smaller of the two planets, CAESER, has a massive megastructure city created by combining several grounded ships. This structure has three tiers: below the earth are huge caverns with trolls aged 1-6 sweeps and their lusus, acting as a nursery layer that keeps them safe from older trolls. In the center of the structure is a giant institution for trolls aged 6-9 sweeps, including dorms for them to live, divided by bloodcolor. They're moved up more quickly than on Alternia due to lusus underpopulation, and are allowed to visit their lusus and their sibling once a month (a lusus's next charge is considered a trolls sibling.) At the top is a palace where psychic-gifted goldbloods live separate from all other hemotypes and raise their heirs. Adult trolls migrate to the larger planet CALIGULA unless invited to stay at the school as instructors. The planet is otherwise dominated by fields and two seas, with the birthing caverns and mothergrub hidden somewhere beneath the fields.
The GOLD RULE binary system, following the teachings of the sufferer as whispered among helmsmen, abolished the hemocaste system; but many beliefs about bioessentialism of blood colors remain. Trolls are referred to as warmbloods and coolbloods, as opposed to being ranked, and are somewhat permitted to seek their own callings in life. The dorms house trolls by blood color, which is intended to keep warmbloods that are prey-imitating safe from predator-imitating coldbloods. Class schedules are also determined by blood color, with trolls needing to apply for classes outside of their schedule if they’re interested. For example, Floria, a petal mantis mimic and purpleblood, really keeps his head down to stay in his painting classes he adores. His scythes are wrapped with linen to keep them from intimidating warmbloods. Otherwise, most his assigned classes are physical and combat-based. Some of his fellow purplebloods disrespect his interests and most warmbloods he shares classes with ignore him. While the hierarchical system has been abolished, struggles remain.

Healing love
A/N: I may have gotten a bit carried away. Enjoy.
@flufftober - Day 9 Love at first sight
Pairing: Poe Dameron x fem. reader
Word count: 1.6K
CW: Reader is a nurse. Mentions of injury, alcohol consumption, bar setting
Flufftober masterlist
Tumblr media
You would never catch Poe Dameron at the med bay, not even by mistake.
He’s tough enough - or so he says - to endure a few scratches here and there until he reaches his quarters and fixes all up by himself. To his defense, he does a decent job at it.
It works perfectly well for Poe, that is until Snap catches him wincing after a mission, the blast he took on his side clearly giving him trouble to even walk down the stairs of his ship. Poe’s claims of rubbing some healing gel on it before bed go unheard by his friend, who lightly pokes his ribs only to get a pained hiss from the pilot. “You’re coming with me or I’ll pierce your lung myself.” Snap demands at the sight of a clearly broken rib.
Unwillingly, Poe begins the walk to the med bay with Snap close behind him to make sure he doesn’t bail. “This is a waste of time, you’ll see,” Poe complains for the thousand time, his never-ending protests reaching deaf ears. The smell of the place is unbearable, like alcohol and medicine even in its precarious state, reminding Poe of one of the reasons why he’s never there.
“Wexley!” A voice greets his friend all of a sudden, and when Poe turns to see the source of it, he’s suddenly forgetting his own name. Snap greets you with a hug an an exclamation of your name matching your happiness, as if you’ve known each other for years. “Is that headache of yours back?”
“Nah, that one’s gone.” He says with a shrug. “Today I’m here for this guy. I don't know if you've met Commander Dameron." Snap motioned towards Poe, who couldn't help but feel a flutter of excitement when your gaze met his.
“Poe,” he corrects, extending his hand to meet you. He hadn’t had the chance to meet you, but he’d be a fool not to notice you before. You were one of the newest members, joining the med team as a head nurse, running away from your home planet after an awful invasion; Poe saw you since your very first day when you were following General Organa around base as she showed you the place, and Poe only hoped she would introduce you to him. You did so much as crossing a glance and share a polite smile, but if Poe knew one thing, was to know beauty when he saw it.
Your hand extended to greet him, and Poe couldn't help but be drawn in by the kindness in your eyes. They told a story of resilience and hope, a tale he read like star maps guiding him home. "Alright, Poe, besides the broken rib, does anything else hurt?"
Poe was momentarily taken aback by your quesion. "How do you even know?" he asked, impressed by your intuition. "Do you read minds or something?"
You chuckled, your laughter like a melody contrasting with the sterile environment of the med bay. "No, Poe. I'm just an amazing nurse," you replied playfully, a wink adding a hint of flirtation to your words. With gentle care, you lifted his shirt to inspect his wounded side, your touch sending a warmth radiating through Poe's body that had nothing to do with the pain in his rib.
After that day, Poe found himself looking forward to his check-ups after every mission. It is the best excuse he can find within himself to see you as much as he possibly can, your smile and your delicate fingers always letting him know he was home; he was becoming addicted to it, to laughing at your witty remarks and chatting with you even if just for a couple of minutes, almost to the point of making up injuries if he came back without so much as a scratch.
It was easy with you. Laughing and existing, forgetting about everything for a while doing nothing but being together; a quick check-up, a shared lunch, it doesn't matter. He shares his stories and you share yours and in that, Poe finds a bond in the unspoken, in the way he makes you laugh and the way you make him smile.
It’s not soon after that he started seeing you hanging out with the rest of the Black Squadron members around base: having lunch with Jessika, talking with Karé, laughing at Snap’s bad jokes. Poe can only assume they were teasing him, that his connection to you had become all too apparent to his friends, who were now enjoying the sight of Poe getting flustered by your presence.
He confirmed so one night, when after a long and exhausting mission, the squad gathered at a cantina for drinks and a night away from battles, laughing and having drink after drink to celebrate their latest success. But in the middle of it all, of all the music and laughs, the sound he least expected was your voice.
“I’m sorry I’m so late!” You said loudly, speaking over the music, approaching his table. The rest of the squad cheered, happy to see you, while Poe remained speechless at your appearance. If you looked beautiful under the harsh lights of the med bay, the way you looked out of it was enough to suck all air out of Poe’s lungs. You were out of your usual uniform, your hair was down and relaxed, and somehow, after the long shift you must have had, you glowed with your smile and your joy infecting everyone. “I’m gonna go get the next round, it’s on me for being so damn late.” You walked away before anyone could protest, not before flashing Poe a smile just for him and a soft touch to his shoulder.
Poe couldn't believe the lengths his squad was going to just to tease their Commander. He slammed his hand on the table in mock frustration. “Alright, very funny guys.”
“What are you talking about?” Jess questioned him, shooting him a questioning look just as the rest of his squad did.
“You know what I’m talking about, you invited her just to tease me because you think she makes me nervous, and I’m just telling you it’s not gonna work.”
“Poe, she’s our friend, that’s why she’s here,” Jess said again, trying hard not to laugh.
“Wait… you think we ask her to come just to see you get all flustered? Which is totally not gonna happen.” Snap’s question was filled with sarcasm. “How much do you think about her to even come up with that?”
Poe was speechless and, much to his defeat, a bit flustered. He didn’t know when his world began revolving around you enough to think that everyone else’s did too.
Karé reached for his hand across the table, her touch grounding him in that moment. "Oh, Poe, sweetheart," she said softly, her eyes filled with understanding, "you are in love with her."
Poe's heart skipped a beat as Kare’s words sank in. It was a truth he couldn't deny to himself. To his defense, he was not sure when was the last time he felt that way, but Poe was deeply and irrevocably in love with you. At that moment, he knew that he couldn't keep his feelings hidden any longer. “I think I need to talk to her.”
His squad cheered for him, urging him to go as he downed his drink. Poe found you by the bar, looking at your surroundings as you waited for the drinks, and as your eyes traveled around they found him. Poe felt his heart beating faster at the way you smiled at him.
"Hey," he said, his voice filled with a vulnerability that was new to him.
“Hi,” you replied, your cheeks warming up by his closeness. “Everything alright?”
Poe nodded, his heart pounding like a drum until, he realized, with you he had nothing to fear about. "Actually… do you want to get out of here?"
Before you could respond, Snap appeared behind Poe, carrying the drinks to the table and flashed a knowing smile at the two of you. You replied with a quick nod, silently agreeing to his invitation and letting him guide you outside, only hoping he was there to tell you the same thing you wanted to tell him.
"You know," he began as soon as you were out, his voice soft but sure, "I've been thinking a lot."
"Thinking about what, Poe?" Your stomach erupted with butterflies.
Poe took a deep breath, his gaze never leaving yours. "About us. About how I can't stop thinking about you, and about how even though I hate the med bay, for months I’ve been there every single time I’m back from a mission with some pathetic excuse.”
A tender smile graced your lips along with a giggle, and you took a step closer to him. "You hate it?” You asked with false annoyance.
“With my whole being.” Poe laughed, shaking his head. “But I guess what I’m trying to say, is…” In that moment, as Poe saw into your waiting eyes gazing at him, the world around you seemed to disappear entirely, leaving only the two of you. Poe reached out, his fingers gently tracing the contours of your cheek, and he leaned in to press a soft, lingering kiss against your lips. It was a kiss filled with all the unspoken words and emotions that had been building between you.
As you pulled away, still lost in each other's eyes, Poe whispered, "I love you. Since the moment I met you, I love you.”
And you, with all the love and hope in your heart, replied, "I love you too, Poe Dameron."

My apologies, what I meant is that most of your languages are made for fantastic, fantasy worlds, as opposed to a fictional culture on Earth. If you're creating a language for a culture set on Earth, you'd probably incorporate features that tie it to a real language, am I correct?
I think you still may be misunderstanding what the key questions are and how they factor into language creation. There are two questions:
Is this language supposed to be descended from an existing language (or set of languages) on Earth?
Is this language spoken by creatures that are identical to humans in all the ways that play a crucial role in language use, comprehensijon, and transmission?
These are the only relevant questions. Notice I didn't say anything about where the languages are spoken. That bit is irrelevant. Language has its own geography and it's the only geography that matters when it comes to a posteriori language construction.
For example, looking at Dothraki, the answer to (1) is no, and the answer to (2) is yes. For that reason, Dothraki should be a language that looks entirely ordinary, in terms of how it stacks up with languages spoken currently on Earth, but its vocabulary and grammar shouldn't be directly related to any language on the planet. How could it be, if our planet doesn't exist in that universe? But since Dothraki are completely ordinary human beings their language should be a compeltely ordinary human language.
If you look at the aliens District 9, the answers to both (1) and (2) are no, despite the fact that the movie takes place in South Africa. And, in fact, you see some very interesting linguistic phenomena in that movie, where you have two species that understand but cannot use each other's languages. Its setting, though, doesn't mean that the alien language should be influenced by Afrikaans in any important way, though. It may have "borrowings", but even those would be strange (calques, most likely), since the aliens can't actually make human sounds—the same way the humans wouldn't have "borrowings" from the alien language.
On the other hand, if you look at Trigedasleng, the answers to both (1) and (2) are yes. But the suggestion you seem to be making is that I might kind of haphazardly "borrow" features from an existing language into a language that I'm nevertheless creating from scratch. That wouldn't make sense. Trigedasleng is simply an evolved form of American English with some specific constraints (some quite unrealistic, due to the scifi setting) placed on the evolution. I didn't "incorporate" features from American English: it IS American English, through and through, evolved in a way that makes sense for the setting.
There are certainly a posteriori conlangs where the creator approaches the creation of the language by saying, "I took the initial consonant mutation of Irish and combined it with the triconsonantal root system of Arabic and added the Turkish plural suffix (with vowel harmony) and added the accusative from Esperanto", and the like. This is one of the hallmarks of an amateur conlanger. Not even a creole language in the real world does this. Creole languages draw influences from many different languages, but the resulting system can't be divided up neatly into different linguistic sources. Furthermore, the result is a coherent system that doesn't look like any of the sources. Tok Pisin gets a lot of its vocabulary and grammar from English, but also gets vocabulary from German and other languages that were native to the region. When listening to the language, though, it's not like it sounds like English, then it suddenly sounds like German for a word, then it sounds like a Papuan language, then back to English: the whole thing sounds like Tok Pisin. It's a seamless, coherent system—just like any language, since all languages on Earth have borrowings and features from other languages.
Also, minor nitpick: "real" language doesn't make sense. We say natural language vs. constructed languages. Both are equally real, in that neither has any kind of material existence. A constructed language is a real language with a fake history.
Does this make sense?

MDNI - Naïve!Jungwon 15 - … Fuck Kyle…
Tumblr media
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6| Part 7 | Part 8 | Part 9 | Part 10 | Part 11 | Part 12 | Part 13 | Part 14
Everything was finally falling perfectly into place. Jungwon adjusted to balancing work and school. You spent almost every second together outside of that. After he returned from an engineering conference, he surprised you with a private picnic date at the foot of the mountains.
“Let’s get married,” he suddenly says, as the two of you lay on a blanket, watching the clouds roll by.
“Jungwonie, you know I love you but… don’t you think that’s a bit fast? We’ve only been dating a few months. What’s the rush? I’m not going anywhere,” you say, gently squeezing his hand. He seems to be thinking about his next words very carefully. “Communication goes both ways,” you say, repeating his little mantra back to him.
“You’re right, baby. It’s just that I love you so much. How about a long engagement then?” You sit up, looking at him. Now it’s your turn to hesitate. He adjusts his glasses, his big brown eyes study your face.
“Is this about Kyle?” you ask quietly.
“What about Kyle?” he suddenly snaps. You still hadn’t told Jungwon about the stalking. But you immediately regret even saying his name. It’s been weeks since you’ve actually seen Kyle. He was everywhere and then suddenly he was nowhere. It was like he never existed. Why did you have to bring him up now?
“I mean… this is not another jealousy thing, is it? ” you say, staring down at your hand intertwined with his hand.
“Fuck Kyle. Never say his name to me ever again. He no longer exists. Okay?! In my world, it’s just you and me. I love you so much. I’d do anything for you, baby,” You’re a little taken aback by his sudden intensity. But it also makes you feel special. Like you’re the only woman on the planet. You’ve never been loved like this and you’ve never loved someone so much. You can't help but grin with tears in your eyes. Jungwon smiles, pulling you down on top of him. He kisses you. “So… is that a yes?” he asks, tilting his head cutely.
“Yes, Mr. dramatic,” you say, straddling his lap and kissing him. His hands run up your thighs and under your skirt, squeezing your ass. You moan, your tongue rolling around his mouth as you gently grind against his growing bulge.
“Do not tease me, Mrs. Yang Jungwon,” he whispers, smacking your ass.
“Fuck! Those words really do sound amazing.” You say, moaning against his lips. Jungwon smiles. Dimples deep. It makes your heart pound and your pussy clench. He rolls you over onto your back and kisses you slowly.
“Gonna make you squirt, pretty girl,” His words make you whimper with anticipation. Jungwon sits up and places his glasses on your face. “Hold these for me, please.” You giggle. How does he pull off sexy and cute at the same time? A deadly combo. He slides down the blanket onto his stomach, coming to his elbows in front of your eager pussy. Jungwon wraps his arms around your thighs and licks a long stripe from your ass to your clit making your hands fly to his hair as you arch your back. He chuckles. "Hold on tight, Noona," he says, dipping his tongue in and out of your pussy.

Being a fan of Avatar (the movie with blue people) is literally the most exhausting fan experience I've ever had, and I'm a female Star Wars fan, who's favorite Star Wars movie is The Last Jedi.
I'm by no means claiming that the movie is flawless or even "great" but it is by scifi blockbuster standards pretty good. It's no more or less racist than the Star Wars prequels and the writing isn't any worse than the scriptwriting in the Star Wars prequels either, yet it's treated with such disdain among people on the internet that I can't even talk about it without receiving random hateful comments.
I cosplay from the movie, more specifically the new movie and an OC that I designed in 2018. I love the movie, especially the visual elements and the design of the Na'vi and their culture, I think it's a fascinating metaphor for our treatment of indigenous peoples and our planet, I love the themes the film presents. But I'm also aware that it's harmful to indigenous people as well because it promotes a white savior narrative, that it's harmful to disabled people by promoting the narrative that they can't live full lives unless they're normative. I don't deny those problems with the movie, and I have plenty of criticisms of the new film as well. Particularly the use of locks on Jake and Spider, and I saw a video on tiktok complaining about that and I left a comment saying that I really wish they hadn't done that and I thought it was a really poor styling choice since up until that point none of the Na'vi we'd seen have locks so it doesn't logically make sense to give them that hair style. I got quite a bit of response to that comment, some people agreeing with me but largely people were saying, "why do you cosplay it then?" "why do you support it then?" like is it not okay to like things and also have criticism for them? I'm allowed to like things about it and also not like things about it.
I also keep seeing videos saying that Avatar has no cultural impact, that it doesn't have a long lasting fan base despite having lore comparable to Lord of the Rings. Here's the thing with that, it totally does have lore comparable to Lord of the Rings but the fan base can't thrive like LOTR fans or even Star Trek could partially because the internet wasn't a space in the same way then as it was when Avatar came out and the other fact is the sheer amount of shaming and harassment that Avatar fans get. I've seen people leave the fandom because of the hate they received on the internet. They quite literally get bullied out of their enjoyment of the movie. People say that Avatar has no fans, but it's fans are chronically silent and reclusive in our liking of the film for fear of getting harassed. I am part of Facebook groups of that have thousands of members and a very active discord. Avatar fans exist, they just keep low and quiet so as to protect themselves. I know people who speak Na'vi in the same way people speak elvish or klingon, it's just not something we advertise because every time we try to share our enjoyment of the movie we get mean comments or mocking stitches/remixes of our videos, pictures, etc. It's not fun to be a public Avatar fan, it's scary and exhausting.
I love Avatar, Neytiri was one of the first truly strong and inspirational female characters I connected with as a child (I was 9 when the movie came out) and I was fascinated and enthralled with the world of Pandora, as were so many movie goers. I'm so tired of getting railed on for enjoying this movie, or even just the constant ridicule that comes through my feed about it. What happened to the golden rule of if you don't have anything nice to say (or on this case even anything that provides new/valuable commentary/criticism) don't say anything at all?
I'm so sick of hearing the same arguments I've heard a million times about why it's a retread plot of Pocahontas/Dances With Wolves/Ferngully, I've heard it all before, I've seen those movies before and their plots are in myths and any number of other stories, that's not why I love the movie. No amount of people saying that to me will change what I do like about the Avatar. I don't watch Avatar for the plot, I watch it for Pandora, and for the visual spectacle and the world building.
I'm sick of the argument that Avatar's treatment of indigenous voices is somehow worse than any other piece of media written by and for white communities, it's not. Even Avatar the Last Airbender (which is my favorite TV show of all time and is often acclaimed as a great example of native representation) also falls failure to the same mistake of casting white actors in POC roles and changing the narratives of natives to be more easily accepted and understood by white audiences. This is not to say that ATLA doesn't handle its message better than Avatar, but it's important to be aware of the ways in which all media has flaws, even the things we think are less problematic and it's important to acknowledge them and not tear the media down for it, but use it as means to make new media better. Cameron did improve with the Way of Water, he frequently consulted with the Maori tribes he was pulling inspiration from, there's literally articles written by Maori tribe members on it but it is still a white people movie, written by white people for white people so do with that what you will. But don't claim star wars is any better, the prequels were outrageously racist, and they still maintain majority white casts.
The new Avatar movie (the way of water) is not perfect, there are quite a few things I found to be poor choices in regards to cultural sensitivity (aka locks, and casting Kate Winslet as Ronal instead of a Polynesian actress) but it's still better than it's predecessor, and unlike so many people on the internet say, it is not "a bunch of white people playing poc" since neither Zoe Saldana, nor Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, or any of the Metkayina children or Cliff Curtis are white. In fact, Cliff Curtis is Maori, the culture that inspired the Metkayina and many of the extras who play background Na'vi in the films are POC, because in spite of James Cameron's failings, he did want the Na'vi to be played by people of color. Very very few of the Na'vi in the original movie are played by white people, only a few extras with less than 1 minute of screen time and no lines. All the major Na'vi roles were played by people of black and indigenous color. Eytukan was played by a Cherokee native, Mo'at (these people are the two clan leaders) is played by a indigenous woman from Africa and is very black. Zoe Saldana's parents are Dominican and Puerto Rican for god's sake! She is not white. This argument that he casts white people in POC roles is untrue. The Avatars are white cause they're meant to represent the invadors, wolf in sheep's clothing if you will. The Na'vi are bipoc, and they're played by bipoc.
After Avatar, James went to Brazil and became and activist for native communities. He went worked with Brazilian natives fighting the building of a dam over their local river, a dam with would power a major city in Brazil, but destroy the indigenous peoples access to water. He went to their community, and asked them what he could do to help. He donated money, protested, ran conferences and tried to disrupt the building of the dam using his influence, but it failed, and he had to watch the suffering of this indigenous tribe that he'd grown very close to in their time working together to prevent the dam. He's not Anti-indigenous as people love to claim, he's clumsy and arrogant (like all cis white men) but what he does is an attempt to elevate native voices not smother them even if he doesn't necessarily succeed.
The movie isn't the menace to society people portray it as, nor is it as boring or uncompelling as people claim. But I still can't go online to enjoy it because no matter what I say, I like it too much for "a bad movie" or I'm "too supportive of something harmful" although I still see people buying Harry Potter merchandise in the Barnes and Noble and I'd argue JK Rowling is an actively bigoted individual who's words and paychecks actively harm marginalized communities, unlike Cameron who despite his bumbling is trying his best and actually learning and doing better with the new content he puts out.
People also say things like, "You only like it cause you're white, no POC people like Avatar." which is blatantly untrue, I've seen native people who like it, black people who like it, I have black friends who like it, I know a black cosplayer who cosplays from it. In fact, I know more poc who cosplay from it than white people. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of the film, and should be allowed to interact with it without getting harassed. It's just exhausting to like it, so people don't say they do.
I'm tired of even the things that should be praised about the new film being used as a way to tear it down. Cameron said in an interview that he "likes Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman as characters but they're not mom's" when asked why he chose to make Neytiri a mother. Neytiri's motherhood doesn't detract from her warrior-ness, she's still a badass bitch and I think that's the point that this person on tiktok clearly missed. He wasn't saying you need women to be moms to be heros, but how many warrior women who are also mothers can you think of off the top of your head? I can't think of any. The choice to make Neytiri a badass mom wasn't to detract from single or childless female characters but to provide even more diversity in the kinds of strong female characters out there. I loved that 1/2 the cast of that movie was women, just as I loved Neytiri in the first film.
In conclusion, can we please stop making Avatar fans lives hell on the internet. I do my own research about how it is and isn't problematic and make my own decisions, I don't need strangers to yell at me. I just want to enjoy my silly ecoscifi movie about blue aliens. I'm aware of its issues and I do my best to raise awareness of the issues facing real natives, to engage with real native stories and voices and support their protests, legal persuits, tribal sovereignty, land back etc, and be the best ally I can be, but I'm not going to boycot this movie because it does some problematic stuff, or because it has an unoriginal plot, if I did that I could never watch another marvel movie again (and yes they're just as bad if you dig, look at the early ones especially) I'm so sick of the insane amount of factually unsupported hate this movie gets and of having to deal with it. I'm tired, I just want to enjoy my movie which is no worse than any other white backed and driven Hollywood blockbuster.

spoiler under the cut for Xavier’s myth 8 and 9
.
.
.
I had this nudging feeling Xavier was from the future and not the past, as Philos seems to have existed after Earth’s demise — seeing as we’re in Earth now.
I also had a sinking feeling he was doing it all for MC, and that she was tied to the core of Philos’ heart somehow. She’s the eternal living sacrifice, and I wonder how many times she’s been reborn at this point.
I wonder if Xavier has only had to see her die once or has she died several times and he could do nothing but watch until his father decided “to wait for when the time is right”?
Hmm but on second thought, I feel that she’s only been reborn twice in Xavier’s lifetime because he’s very fixated on the first star she gave him, and later on he replaces it with the second star that second MC gives him.
(MC didn’t understand the significance of why he changed it—)
MC is so clueless tho girl he’s trying to tell you THAT ITS YOU YOU ARE HIS ONLY LOVE UGHHH
I understand why Xavier was vague about the truth, as it is a very heavy truth, and with how duty-bound his MC is, she’d probably choose to die to save the planet and he’d have to watch all over again.
STILL, I feel bad for his MC because she always felt like he was in love with someone else despite his promises to her (girl fear not it was all you) + she felt like he left her alone to rule over Philos, but in reality he was doing all this to save her so she’d never have to be a sacrifice again.
I cried a bit when MC had her monologue at the end though.
My question now is: does this mean Xavier’s MC is still out there, waiting for him? While Xavier does operation backtrack to go back to earth and be with the current MC?
I’ll gather my thoughts later I woke up at 5am so I could do this before school I’ve been farming for days for this moment
For those interested, I can make a timeline!
Comment if you’d like to share thoughts :) I really want to talk to people about this!
(Also just wanna say Jeremiah is the goat he’s had to put up with mc and Xavier pining for each other hahaha)

web of wyrd observation: why timothee chalamet's wyrd web just makes sense
Tumblr media
9-9-18 CODES
if you all ever wonder why this man is so illustrious, those are witchy combos, my friend - like my goodness there are a lot. this many could make a person capable of standing alone (hermit (9) who represents solitude) while enchanting people around them (the moon (18) is ruled by neptune). the code exists in his artistic talent zone which then makes even more sense - at least to me it does - why so many people love him.
21 AS THE CAREER NUMBER
world (21) people tend to receive and win many awards during their time in their career. so far timmy has five awards of note, and he is not even 30 yet. we can expect when his saturn (the planet that rules the world card) return occurs that his fame will only increase. there are a few critical years for being in his prime, especially in terms of his career like ages 45 and 52.
15 AS THE MONEY BLOCKER
it's no wonder he switched schools then stopped attending during the filming of interstellar... the devil (15) is capricorn ruled. the traditional route (schooling) is not the way to get into a career for these people.
12 AS THE HIGHER SELF
the hanged man (12) is a neptunian... so here is my prediction... i do not believe that he will always just be an actor - one day in the future, i feel like he will be a producer, screenwriter, or director. not to mention...
9-6-15 CODE
he has a creative code on his third eye chakra, so that again makes me think of a director - someone who sees things through a creative lens/perspective.
6 AS THE FLOW AND A PRIMARY MATERIAL ENERGY
this is the definition of "be pretty, get money" - as long as he is promoting beauty and grace in his characters, he will continue to receive the adoration of others and make money.

If Cosmere characters had mundane hobbies...
And by “mundane” I just mean “non-extreme” (aka, no base jumping, no paragliding); we’re talking, like, doing puzzles or going for a pleasant hike. If all these hobbies existed and Cosmere characters weren’t busy fending for their lives all the time, what might they get up to?
1. Szeth: Frisbee golf
We already know that Szeth is great at paintball; I just feel like he’d be weirdly good at frisbee golf as well.
2. Renarin: Speed Rubik’s Cube
Renarin likes to fiddle and have something for his hands to do--I think solving a Rubik’s Cube would be fun for him. And I threw in “speed” (aka, trying to do it as fast as possible) because Renarin loves to jump into things wholeheartedly.
3. Kaladin: Indoor Rock Climbing
Kaladin has already gone rock climbing in two books--he makes his own rock wall in the chasms in Book 1 and climbs down Urithiru in Book 4. He even knows that he should be using “rock dust” for his hands. I think some nice, non-extreme, indoor rock climbing would be good for Kaladin. Bonus: he’s not afraid of heights!
4. Shai: Stamp Collecting
(I’m sorry)
5. Eshonai: Hiking
Eshonai loves to go out into the woods and explore, see new places and people and things. I can see her getting into hiking.
6. Raoden: Coding
Before he even had powers, Raoden already liked to memorize Aons--and from what I understand, AonDor is basically coding.
7. Tien: Rock Collecting
I mean, this is literally just canon. I have to imagine that he’d also enjoy whittling since that is again, simply canon.
8. Shallan: Crochet
Okay, so Shallan does already have hobbies in canon: like drawing, for example. But I think she’d also enjoy crochet--all those patterns coming together, her Spren humming excitedly...
9. Adolin: Sewing
Even while trapped in Shadesmar, Adolin is able to sew himself a new outfit. If he had time and materials, he could definitely make some cool clothing.
10. Mare: Gardening
I mean, she loves flowers. If she were alive when her planet could support flowers, I think she’d love to grow some.
11. Sixth of the Dusk: Birdwatching
If he wasn’t, you know, desperately trying to survive at all times, I feel like Sixth of the Dusk might enjoy some nice, relaxed birdwatching.
12. Wax: Puzzling
Normally Wax is putting together the pieces of deadly mysteries that will impact the fate of his planet. Maybe he’d find it a nice change of pace to just put together colorful cardboard instead!
13. Rysn: Extreme Couponing
Listen, Rysn once leapt off of a cliff to talk to a god to make a deal. Clipping coupons would at least have the advantage of being safer than that, no matter how “extreme” she gets.
14. Rlain: Amateur Radio
Amateur radio tends to use morse code, which is a form of communication Rlain might find comfortingly rhythmic. Plus, amateur radio lets you connect with people, but no one can see you or judge you for being a crab person.
15. Vin: Parkour
Even without powers, I can see Vin running across buildings and climbing things she’s not supposed to climb. I think she’d have a good time.
16. Jasnah: Crossword puzzles
Yes, I am basically calling Jasnah a nerd here, but also, I think she’d probably really like crossword puzzles--knowing things, understanding obscure trivia, solving puzzles that aren’t about the end of the world...
17. Dalinar: Tunnelling
I dunno if this is just a Reddit phenomenon, but apparently some people just really like to dig long tunnels underground? And Dalinar sure had a great time digging out that latrine that one time. Perhaps that was a sign that his true love is burrowing deep, deep underground.
18. Taravangian: Fantasy Football
I don’t know a whole lot about Fantasy Football, but I believe it involves creating your own imaginary team of players and then using their actual, real-life performance to get points. So you have to be good at predicting how people will act, skilled at long-term planning, and have a deep desire to win. It’s like Taravangian’s diagram, only nobody (hopefully) dies!

Do you think Timelord-specific disabilities exist? Like Timelords who always regenerate into the same body, or something else?
Time Lord Disabilities
Absolutely. Time Lords already deal with some unique disabilities or conditions:
👽 Existing
Regenerative Dissonance: Imagine your past selves just won’t shut up. Multiple personalities from past incarnations do not shut up when you regenerate, resulting in a constant board meeting inside your head. This condition has such a severe impact on mental health that afflicted Time Lords end up committing suicide, although there is Gallifreyan technology that can help control it.
Regenerative Vulnerabilities: The few seconds in which they are regenerating are extremely vulnerable, compromising their immune systems and leaving them open to viruses, paradoxes and other forms of biodata corruption through foreign materials, resulting in severe allergies or even changing species.
DNA instability: A complete artron deficiency, AKA 'I need to constantly consume energy or else I'll wither away.' This life energy may or may not come from other people. 😵‍💫
Whoops, that regeneration went wrong: Can be sub-categorised into areas including (but not limited to) - Whoops, I only have half a new body now; - Whoops, I regenerated my body but not my brain; - Whoops, I've turned myself inside out; - Whoops, I've gone back to being a time tot; - Whoops, I've turned into a creature from Stranger Things.
Regenerative infections: Multiple regenerative illnesses exist, one of which is the Dogma Virus, which is a condition that lies dormant until a Time Lord regenerates, then turns the new incarnation into a violent, mindless being.
Dark Design: Dark Design is a rather special form of insanity reserved for Gallifreyans only. This renders the Gallifreyan unable to stop thinking; hampering their ability to sleep or take care of themselves, causing severe irritability and anger, hallucinations, and an inability to process reality. It is usually suffered by exceptionally clever Gallifreyans and results in them becoming corrupt geniuses. It is incurable, and sufferers spend their lives in Gallifreyan mental institutions (or you know, being President).
Retro-regeneration or Degeneration: Reverting to previous incarnations can happen and has its own set of potential issues. Call me crazy, but I have a feeling we may find out more about that as the weeks go by ...
+ many more besides.
💭 Speculative
Given these existing complexities and potential pitfalls, it's entirely feasible that there could be lots more Time Lord-specific disabilities. Some speculative examples might include:
Chronic Regenerative Inhibition: A condition where a Time Lord can't regenerate at all despite having all the necessary physical gear, living just one mortal life.
Regenerative Looping: A condition, as you suggested, that forces the Time Lord to continually regenerate into the same form, never moving on to a new one.
Retro-Regenerative Confusion: An inability to correctly channel past incarnations even when they are needed. Maybe this is a skill set, or a set of memories. And we're not just talking 'I can't quite remember what happened on this planet last time' to 'wait, how does walking work?'
Environmental divergence: Maybe regeneration is required in an atmosphere with no Oxygen. If the body successfully adapts to this environment, then maybe the Gallifreyan can no longer breathe Oxygen and requires exclusively space dust-9 atmospheres to live?
Chrono/psionic dementias: Maybe a Time Lord can no longer perceive time in linear order? Maybe they can no longer control their psionic abilities, hearing everyone's thoughts all the time?
These are just a few ideas - the list is potentially infinite.
Hope that helped! 😃

Day 9: Light Across the Aether: Satellite Cannon Falcon.
@arcvmonth
I know there are mistakes (and it not being 3:2 irks me) but I was too tired to fix them. Hope the pic wasn’t overhyped. I don’t want to get an F in Fanart.
The Satellite Cannon Falcon sequence is my favourite part of Shun vs Dennis, which also happens to be my favourite duel/moment in Synchro. Raidraptors are also my favourite Xyz archetype (WHY IS FORCE STRIX IN A BOX!?)! and Sat Cannon, even after tormenting me with this pic, is still my favourite Xyz monster! This is partly due to how amazing the entire sequence is as well as the quality and variety of questions its mere existence provokes.
How does Portable Real Solid Vision actually work? Is there a maximum range? Or could Satellite Cannon Falcon conceivably fly to Mars and bring back rock samples?
How long does it take for Satellite Cannon Falcon to fly into space? If Shun were duelling in a sufficiently deep hole, would his turn run out before Satellite Cannon Falcon attacked?
If the sun were on the other side of the planet, would Satellite Cannon Falcon have to miserably fly back down and peck the opposing monster to death with its tiny beak?
Does Satellite Cannon Falcon use lasers? If Satellite Cannon Falcon uses lasers, then why does it take 20 seconds for the laser to speed of light its way over to Dennis?
Before the development of real solid vision, did Satellite Cannon Falcon still fly into space? Or did it just decide to start doing that once it gained real mass? Is Satellite Cannon Falcon secretly Shun’s most dramatic monster?
Shun can’t see what Satellite Cannon Falcon gets up to in space, right? Does Shun have any headcanons?
Is the Satellite Cannon Falcon sequence we see in the show actually Shun’s headcanon? Does this present the possibility that Satellite Cannon Actually does something much goofier? If so, what?
How is Satellite Cannon Falcon?
Why is Satellite Cannon Falcon?
Is there a way for me to Turbo Satellite Cannon Falcon in Dlinks? Put your Decklists in the replies.
None of these questions require answers (except 10), the less explained the better. Funnier that way.

Monster Spotlight: Onyvolan
Tumblr media
CR 3
Chaotic Neutral Monstrous Humanoid
Adventure Path: War for the Crown: Crownfall, pg. 86-87
Y’know, Pathfinder borrows creatures from just about every mythological, folkloric, and religious sphere on the planet, and every Bestiary contains a generous handful of creatures based on existing properties with enough differences that most people who recognize them will go “hey, I know that one!” Cute homages and references abound in Pathfinder, something I DO genuinely enjoy... But this one?  I think the Venn Diagram crossover section between “people who play Pathfinder” and “people who’ve actually watched Return to Oz“ (or read the original sequel books) contains maybe 7 people. While not the most obscure property or story Pathfinder’s ever referenced, it’s definitely up there! I enjoy that Pathfinder’s version goes all the way back to the original story’s first description of them, making their wheels keratinous appendages instead of the mechanical augmentations they were in the movie.
And god does it make these things weird. In the whimsical Land of Oz, the weirdness of the Wheelers is perfectly at home and almost entirely glossed over as just another example of the strange natives of an even stranger world. In Pathfinder? ... well, they also don’t have an excuse. There’s ZERO explanation of where these creature’s come from, why they exist, and why they do what they do! Not even a handwave explanation of mad wizardry, magical contamination, a bloodline curse, or alchemical muckery. As far as anyone care to tell, they’re simply forms of bizarre wildlife that have evolved--naturally, magically, or otherwise--to live in human cities. And only in human cities, unfortunately; their wheeled appendages make them quick as a pony (40ft movement) and quiet as a whisper (+10 Stealth!) on flattened ground, beaten dirt roads, and stone pathways, but uneven surfaces prove to be a bane to them. They’re Easily Hampered, and any difficult terrain they encounter costs them 20ft of movement per 5ft square, slowing them to a glacial crawl.
Onyvolan are curious creatures through and through. They’re intelligent as any human and can hold perfectly lucid conversations in Common, but their entire being and culture seems to revolve around being roving gangs of bullies, scavengers, and thieves. They squat in unused buildings and abandoned homes, roving out to scavenge what they can from any source they can, prizing junkyards and garbage pits to vandalize nearby structures, as well as find food, trinkets for their odd collections, and especially clothing, their alien mindsets causing them to prize clothes above all other forms of treasure; the more garish, eye-searing, and ugly, the better. Gangs of Onyvolan look like groups of hideously-dressed street toughs on roller skates, and they act the part, too. They seem almost instinctually motivated to bully and scare any Humanoid they come across, as if they were perpetually in the mind-space of being belligerent and aggressive teenagers. often surrounding victims on all sides and shouting, growling, hissing, spitting insults, laughing, and whooping until they’ve had their fun with the object of their attention and rolling off. Their Creepy Cackle is noted to be particularly chilling, any creature within earshot needing to make a DC 14 Will save to avoid being shaken by the sound, and though success on the save renders the victim immune to that particular wheel-man’s Cackle for a day, the monstrous creatures are almost never alone.
If feeling especially brave (typically, this means outnumbering their target 3 to 1), Onyvolans will tackle and trip their victims, their Nimble Charger giving them +2 to Bull Rush and Overrun maneuvers (for a decent +9) and preventing victims from making Attacks of Opportunity in retribution. Once on the ground, Onyvolans will pilfer items from their unfortunate victim, grabbing articles of clothing or bags of groceries in their sharpened teeth before running off, cackling into the distance as they skate away at speeds the average human cannot match. Unlike a great many city-dwelling humanoids with sharpened teeth, Onyvolan aren’t man-eaters or even murderers, preferring to keep their crimes to muggings or breaking-and-entering. Their two slam attacks, each dealing 1d8+1 damage, are more for discouraging guards or punishing people who don’t fork over their belongings than actual tools for murder, and Onyvolans are Cowards (as every single bully is), easily shaken by any creature trying to Intimidate them back and preferring to flee from fights than stick around and see them to their end.
These creatures make for very strange encounters in metropolitan areas, wheeling in to harass and steal from the party before making a swift escape. Their relative harmlessness (in that they’ll beat you up but probably won’t kill you) and the low stakes they tend to involve themselves in (the most dramatic crime they’re stated to take is coordinated raids on clothiers and haberdashers) make them good targets for adventurers getting their own metaphorical wheels spinning, though despite their cowardice and the ruination that any amount of difficult terrain inflicts on them, one shouldn’t underestimate how punishing it can be to be shaken while surrounded by creatures that specialize in hitting people while they’re down. Just because you’re unlikely to die doesn’t mean you’re unlikely to lose and get all your clothes stolen, and few things are as damning to a beginning Wizard or Inquisitor as losing your big goofy hats. That’s practically like losing a class feature!
You can read more about them here.

I see your 'Cody is Onyx Prime reincarnated' theory, and I raise you:
Cody being the only adopted child of the Burns family- a child that doesn't remember his past. His conscious can't recall anything- but his body never forgets.
The date is March 7th, 2008- the time is 9:43 PM EST. Just off the coast of Maine, soldiers glimpsed a meteor shooting overhead.
Alarmed, they run to investigate the sight, only to find a giant crater in the middle of the densely packed pine woods that decimated nearly nine yards of plant life. At the center is a giant block of ice glowing from inside, the silhouette of a boy no older than three or five years old slumbering inside.
The scientists at Griffin Rock's laboratory propose advanced cryogenic preservation as an answer to the ice's existence.
The ice itself takes weeks- even months- to fully melt. When Cody wakes up in Griffin Rock's laboratory, he's not yet Cody Burns- he's a child without a name, without memories- cold and hungry and scared, unable to stop silently crying in terror.
There's no tag, no form of identification on him. He can't speak- can't yet understand the words being said to him. For the first three years, he's raised in the laboratory, being taught basic math and English. Then the Burns Family comes along and adopts him.
Cody remembers the first day he came home. He remembered all the different outfits he tried on- all the different pasts he tried to imagine for himself. He'd pretend to be the prince of a bygone world, or an infant launched from a deserted and wartorn planet- but none of those personas seemed to stick.
He becomes utterly attached to the camera the first time his father shows it to him- his bedroom's bookshelves become filled with photo albums, each page packed with countless laminated photos. Other quirks begin to develop- like him wearing an archery glove wherever he went.
A nameless child, endlessly chasing the sea and the stars with aching limbs and a mind full of questions- then Cody Burns.
And before...?
Nothing- just feelings, colors, sensations. Tears that drop onto the back of his hand. Some days, when he looks into the mirror, he feels the sudden urge to drive his fist into the glass, shatter it and cry out to the world.
I don't recognize myself.
Static all around, everywhere- filling his ears, filling his lungs. Filling our lungs- my lungs.
Thoughts turn to mush, hands tremble without will.
Where does he end and I begin? Make it stop.
Please.
Make it stop...

Chapter 12 summary: The Batch make a plan for infiltrating the villa.
Hunter glanced up at Dara’s dozing form curled on top of the Marauder and shook his head. The sun was just peeking over the horizon as he and Echo returned from their surveillance shift, and he could hear the chattering of the planet’s small woodland creatures all waking up at once. He wasn’t sure he even wanted to know why Dara was sleeping outside. If it had been one of his squad, whose quirks were innumerable and often incomprehensible, he wouldn’t even bother to find out. As it was, he couldn’t be sure of the right approach to take with this temporary member about whom they knew so little.
Entering the ship to find the others wide awake, he thought maybe they’d have a better idea. “Any clue why Dara slept on top of the ship last night?” the Sergeant asked.
Tech and Wrecker looked pointedly at Crosshair. “She did not seem very pleased when they returned from town,” Tech observed.
Hunter crossed his arms. “What did you do now?” The sniper only shrugged, a smirk lurking dangerously at the corners of his mouth.
Wrecker elbowed him and grinned mischievously. “Hey! Be nice to her. Dinner was so good last night I think I might ask her to marry me.”
Crosshair’s expression quickly turned to a scowl. “The mission went fine. We got the intel. It’s not my fault if she wants to sleep on the roof.”
“Maybe she’s just sick of us,” Echo speculated. “Sounds like she spends a lot of time alone. It’s probably an adjustment to be cramped up in the Marauder with five men day in and day out.”
“Can’t say I blame her,” Hunter muttered.
Tech looked at Crosshair curiously. “How did Dara do, by the way?”
The sniper met his gaze with shared understanding. His brother may not have been as hostile as he was, but he was smart enough to know that something was off with her. “A little too well.”
For once there was no bickering on the subject, only a thoughtful silence from the group of clones before Hunter sighed heavily. “We’ll keep a close eye on her tonight. Wrecker, go wake her up so we can make a plan.”
Wrecker popped out of the hatch and returned a short time later, followed by Dara, who was blinking blearily. She seemed out of it as she undertook the painstaking ritual of preparing her tea. Not for the first time, Crosshair’s eyes were drawn to her hands: the patient tap of her fingers against the pouch as she tipped the herb into her mug; the way she fiddled with the metal straw, arranging it just so; the curve of her grasp as she poured the water. He watched her mouth as she took her first sip, noticing the bags under her eyes and the way she rubbed, absentmindedly, at the purple and reddish blotch he’d left on her neck.
“Sleep well?” he taunted.
She pursed her lips and passed the beverage along to Hunter. Finding the Sergeant also watching attentively for her answer, she shrugged.
“Was looking at the stars for a bit before bed and fell asleep by accident. Wasn’t too comfortable but I’ve slept on worse.”
Wrecker laughed heartily. “Us too. Remember that time with the leeches on Nal Hutta?”
“Don’t remind me,” Echo shuddered. “I still have nightmares about it.”
“Fortunately, I do not believe there are any leeches on this planet. Although it does appear that Dara may have been bitten by a large insect overnight,” Tech observed. Crosshair looked at him closely, finding a hint of amusement in his eyes; Tech could miss a lot of subtlety, but he certainly wasn’t naïve. He knew that what he was looking at on Dara’s neck wasn’t an insect bite.
And everybody thought Crosshair was the shit-stirrer.
By the way Dara’s jaw tightened nearly imperceptibly, she hadn’t missed his brother’s tease. “Got hit by a branch walking home in the dark, actually,” she countered, daring him to call her out on the lie.
Hunter turned a thoughtful gaze to her. “Are you alright? You seem…”
“I’m just a little concerned about the mission,” Dara interrupted, eagerly redirecting the conversation. “Something the director of the lab said last night made me think that Prium is developing a project for the Empire. And if that’s the case, the security protocols might be tougher to break through than we expected.”
“Not for us,” Wrecker asserted confidently.
“Hmm. We’ll keep it in mind,” Hunter mused. “Right. Let’s share intel and start making a plan.”
Dara gave them a rundown of what she had gleaned from her conversations in the market and the bar. In turn, the others reported their discoveries from the past day and night of surveillance, which had revealed plenty about the villa’s security protocols, the guards’ schedules and paths of their rounds, and possible entry points.
However, as Dara had voiced, breaking in wouldn’t be without its complications. “Unfortunately, it appears that I will be unable to replicate our trick for disabling the proximity sensors and outside cameras from our last job,” Tech admitted. “The security systems here cannot be accessed remotely. I will need to do so from the control room inside of the villa.”
“What are our chances of sneaking in undetected while those systems are still active?” Hunter mused.
“Very low,” Tech replied matter-of-factly.
Wrecker cracked his knuckles with enthusiasm. “So we rush the guards, stun them all, and break in by force!” he proclaimed.
Echo placed a stern hand on his largest brother’s shoulder. “Hate to burst your bubble, but if we do that and they send for reinforcements from town, we could wind up having a lot of trouble getting out of there. Not to mention how much harder it will be for Tech and I to break into the lab if they initiate a security lockdown. And if the Empire’s really invested in this guy’s work, we can’t rule out that we might draw Imperial attention before we can get off planet.”
A smile twitched at the corners of Dara’s still-weary mouth. “Tech, could you load everything you need to override their security systems on a datapad so that somebody else can just plug in and run it? Then only one person would have to make it in, get to the control room, and the others can sneak through an accessible entry point.”
Tech blinked owlishly behind his goggles. “Of course.”
Hunter furrowed his brow suspiciously. “Are you suggesting one of us poses as a guard to get in there? I thought you said all the guards are locals—we won’t be able to slip past, the others will know we’re not one of them.”
Dara shrugged. “All the guards and other villa workers are locals. But Raab said that a lot of the scientists at the lab come from off-world.”
Wrecker grinned. “Tech sure could pose as a scientist.”
In response, Dara dug into her pack, pulling out a white lab coat and a key card. “He could, but I don’t think this will fit him. Sorry.”
Crosshair’s eyes glittered almost admiringly before he remembered to scowl. “Now how did you manage to steal those, burk’yc?”
She glared back at him. “Some of us were actually doing our jobs last night. Obviously you weren’t paying very close attention.”
He leaned forward. “Is that what you were doing? Could’ve fooled me. Maybe I was too busy keeping an eye out for your sorry shebs during your pathetic flirting.”
“Whose keycard is that?” Tech interrupted. His nose was buried in his datapad, no doubt already preparing the programs necessary to dismantle the villa’s security.
Dara gave Crosshair one more angry squint before looking away. “Raab’s. I’ll say I work for him and that he sent me to get something important. I get in, get the rest of you in undetected, and then we rendezvous at the lab and take it from there.”
Everyone looked towards Hunter, waiting for his approval. Finally, the Sergeant nodded. “Okay. Let’s get to work.”

should jake and cassie get back together post-war?
Yes! And no. And yes. And no.
On the one hand, they're so sweet and gentle and respectful with each other. Jake trusts Cassie more than he trusts himself (#21). Cassie trusts Jake more than she trusts herself (#4). They bale hay and clean her barn and relax together in between missions (MM1, #4, #24, MM2, #16, etc.) to the point where Jake's already at Cassie's place helping her a solid 25% of the time the others show up for a meeting. Jake thinks Cassie is "compassionate, brilliant" (#16) and "a one-woman army" (#54). Cassie thinks Jake is "serious, but knows when to laugh" (#4) and prides herself on getting "one of his rare, slow smiles" out of him (#9). They have a lot of the same priorities — they're willing to mess around with morphing on occasion, but always keep their eyes on the planet-sized goals. They have a lot of the same weaknesses — they can't trade lives, even when that means risking a lot of people to save just one.
Cassie lies about "I need a pretzel" to pull Jake aside and give him a minute to come down from a bad morph, something she knows he can't do in front of the others (#16). Jake supports Cassie's decision to quit, and tells her he'll love her no matter what (#19) but is also pretty clear that he doesn't think the team can function without her (#41, #44). He trusts her to know what she's doing, even when she's pulling dumb crap like morphing rat to cheat on her homework (#9) or mass-freeing chimpanzees (#28) — which is more trust than he ever extends to Marco or Rachel. She trusts him to know what he's doing, even when he's doing risky stuff like pulling a partial retreat (#41) or sending Ax into the line of fire (#11) — which is more trust than Rachel or Tobias ever give.
On the other hand. I see why they break up. I really do. The mess with the morphing cube is just the straw that broke the camel; they're already growing apart well before then. And Jake's behavior after their breakup just goes to show Cassie made the right call by sacrificing their relationship for the war effort. He shuts Cassie out, talks over her, accuses her of betraying the team (#51), Freudian-slips into replacing her on the team with Toby and Eva (#53). Sure, he's got other stressors at the time, and he does apologize, but Cassie doesn't deserve that. And Cassie succeeds in building a whole life after the war — she goes back to school, starts working for the State department, gets a new boyfriend, becomes ambassador to the hork-bajir — whereas Jake's postwar plan consists of "hanging around my parents' house until I was 30" (#54). No offense to Jake, but Cassie could do better.
So. If this is a universe where Jake has his shit together — he's 10 years on from the kelbrid mission and has better emotional balance, he's in a universe where Rachel survived to drag him to a therapist's office by the hair — then I'd love to see that relationship resume. If we extrapolate in a straight line from canon, then I'd say Cassie deserves better than eternity with a guy who mostly deals with emotions by trying to pretend they don't exist.
