Today, December 12th, marks the 50th anniversary of the release of The Poseidon Adventure, the 1972 classic disaster movie. Fun bit of trivia, when casting the role of Belle Rosen, the producer Irwin Allen told Shelley Winters that she could only get the role is she gained 45 pounds on a couple of months, so she put herself on a gain weight regimen and on the appointed date Shelley got on the scale in front of him and had gained 51! She famously got the role and for me, she was the best part of the movie. This bears a special place in my heart because my late parents loved her performance so much! It was one of their favourite movies. Cataclysm

Whenever I read a story about a strange event

that defies probability but not possibility, I tend

to imagine myself as witness to the greater story

Four whales have washed up on the Jersey shore

in the last two months, more than have done so

in the previous forty years, and no one knows why

But this is the opening scene from some science

fiction movie where a global catastrophe is about

to unfold, like a shift in the poles’ magnetic fields

Or the tectonic plates are shifting, or some alien

life-form has infested the deepest trenches of the

oceans, biding their time to strike, which is now

Or I’ve been watching too many late night movies

and this is all in my head—but that is exactly what

the skeptics say in the first act, until they find out

And by then, it’s too late, but not for the observant

protagonist—that’s me—who figured it out early

enough to formulate a plan to survive, or fight back

Call me crazy, mock my unusually high levels of

alertness, but when the shit hits the fan, and the tidal

waves takes out Manhattan, I’ll be the one laughing.

“Disaster Movie” at Open M - M Leuven

Disaster Movie by Jan Peeters and Paul Bogaert, and featuring Volkmar Mühleis, will be on display this summer in M in Leuven. The group exhibition 'Time and Again' is the result of an open call for Open M. With this initiative, M Leuven focuses on artists who have a link with Flemish Brabant or Leuven. From the 370 submitted proposals, curator Melanie Bühler (Frans Hals Museum) made a selection of 13 artists. The selected works in this edition of Open M are about the concept and perception of time. 

Opening: Thursday 5 May 2022, 20:00-23:00. The exhibition runs from Friday 6 May till Sunday 28 August 2022.

What kind of terror fic do you like reading?? Is there any particular favs you'd recommend?

BOY DO I HAVE A FEW FAVORITES let me clarify though

i am particular about what terror fics i read. i dont delve far outside of my few favorite pairings. i can tell you very firmly that i do not like a lot of aus outside of a rescue au, i normally dont touch modern setting fics or anything outside of canon terror events. however there is exactly 1 au i read that Makes Me Nuts of bridglar in a lighthouse keeper au. Pharos, by salvage. for the love of GOD read salvage's bridglar fics every last one of them is the best thing ive read in my life

other than bridglar i enjoy a goodsilna. they were my no. 1s that got me into the show and i wasnt Thrilled about most of the fics in their tag but i read intertwined, your dream in mine by disastermovie and i loved it. i favor rescue aus as i have said. and i love these two SO much and it felt like it was done so right

Tell me about your gross misreading of the ending of Titanic

So I was discussing Titanic with a friend couple of months back and she mentioned that Rose dies in the end and I'm like ??? What I do Not remember that happening? And she tell me no yeah it's implied, don't you remember she goes to sleep and then she sees all the dead people and Jack? And that's when I realise I had it all wrong, so here is what I thought had happened:

I thought Rose sees the dead people as a repetitive haunting experience. She is unable to let go of the people who died and the tragedy that occurred. So she sees them every night as if everything has been a dream and nothing bad ever happened. She stays with the ghosts because she always sees Jack and decides to stay with them because she would rather have him any way that she can. I thought it was some sort of horrific vision that entraps her every night and as a form of psychological torture due to her survivor's guilt. Furthermore I remember getting scared while watching it because I fully expected that the moment she holds Jack's hand the lights would turn off and everyone else would turn to bloated corpses as the ship fills with water and that is her awakening to the fact that she did go through that loss, and Jack would turn into a zombie version of himself to represent her guilt. This would, in my mind, repeat every night - the ghosts haven't let her go and she allows them to tempt her to stay night after night as a form of self flagellation because she believes she deserves the guilt or she believes it would be different this time and it never is, she is caught in the endless cycle.

Anyway turns out it was NOT a horror film and the much simpler explanation was death but if you're going to just imply things and I'm a weird little autistic kid who doesn't Get That this is simply how I'm gonna interpret it what do you expect

not in any particular order because I can’t pick favorites BUT

Into the Spiderverse self-explanatory. looks great, sounds great, and everyone sings its praises for good reason!  

How To Train Your Dragon specifically 1 & 2. (I simply don’t acknowledge 3.) also the “Gift of the Night Fury” short, which I adore so much. a boy and his dragon working together to make the world a more accepting space, what’s not to love! they’re iconic and I love them.  

Spirited Away my first ghibli film, which scores a special place in my heart. lovely story with lively characters of all kinds.  

Promare the color! the music! the homoeroticism between an arsonist and a firefighter who both really just want to save people so they enemies-to-lovers about it! the lampshaded anime tropes that nonetheless are treated with affection rather than disdain! a love letter to anime in all the best ways. seriously though this movie is worth watching just for the pure spectacle of color.  

Pacific Rim drift compatibility reshaped the way i view interpersonal relationships between characters for the better. the mortifying ordeal of being known only it’s not mortifying, it’s wonderful and can sprout between people of all different walks of life, and it’s used to power giant robots to fight giant monsters. what else could you want! (not a sequel. don’t—just don’t look at anything but this movie okay it’s not worth it.)  

The Legend of Hei aka the story of the cutest animated kitty ever. he’s just trying to find a home! this is also one of my sister’s favorite movies so it gets bonus points and it deserves it tbh! adorable movie, beautiful landscapes, characters with cool powers animated gorgeously.  

Wolfwalkers the style of this movie is just. so good. discovering that those beasts your father hunts are just trying to live! becoming one of them! all of it depicted in stunningly drawn movement! the whole running with the wolves sequence never gets old.  

Jiang Ziya how do I even begin to describe how much I love this movie. it’s about someone just trying to save the person in front of him. it’s about questioning authority that abides by murder “for the greater good”. it’s about breaking the cycle at its root. it’s about trusting your senses above what you’re told, about doing what’s right, about a father demanding that heaven be just to the people it reigns over, about a kid who wants a family—there are so many themes that I love to bits in this movie. plus the animation’s great!  

Everything Everywhere All At Once would you love me if i was a rock (yes) (always yes) (a thousand times in a thousand worlds yes). funny moments interspersed with some of the most soul-wrenching conversations between mother and daughter that really just leave you thinking, oh, it’s love. it’s always been love.  

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron my childhood, in a nutshell. honse! incredible music! just a horse trying to get back to his herd and finding an understanding of people along the way. and also blowing up that one train lmao.
