So, last night, my wonderful wife and I went to go see “Black Adam.” For context, I have not seen “Shazam!” I have not, in fact, watched any DC Cinematic Universe in full except for “Suicide Squad.” Yes, not “The Suicide Squad,” “Suicide Squad.” So, what are my thoughts on this very out of context film in a larger DC Canon of film? I loved it. It was kind of everything that I really would have wanted in a Black Adam movie. It adapts in a way that I like that I will definitely butt heads with comic purists over, so if you are expecting the story to purely follow some sort of comics approach don’t get your hopes up. It uses a character we have in our own mythological past (“Black Adam”) and reinvents him to discuss new, modern issues, not unlike how Odysseus has been reinterpreted by different cultures and even by the same person writing his stories. I love it. It satisfied both the part of me that enjoys watching Dwayne the Rock Johnson violently destroy people and the part of my brain that likes to think about the intellectual aspects of film like theme and mis-en-scene. I would highly recommend it if you like like superhero action films and also if you like films that wrestle with political themes. Great film.
