Since the last post talked a bit about the general biotech level in The Swarm, I thought I'd give a brief overview of where the other two are at before I do a deep dive on the factions.

With the system I'm working with Cybernetics represent the melding of organic and inorganic to achieve a desired end while Robotics seeks to offload it all onto the inorganic in the same way Biotech does for the organic.

Now, to a degree, all of these are common in the setting everywhere. No matter where you go you'll find automation in manufacturing and even basic consumer level robots. You'll find low power cybernetic limb replacements for those grossed out by cloned ones and simple communication jacks. If these things aren't around, well, you've wandered into quite the weird place.

The things that make the factions different is how far they're trying to take the basic technologies, and for what purposes. Not just everyone is so thoroughly integrating cybernetic Exo-Frames into their society that even civilians are eating and sleeping in them. Not every station has robots doing all the menial and even complex labour or are looking to create fully digital intelligence. Not every group is trying to biohack their own monstrous attack dogs or take full control of their own genome.

Most people on most stations are just... folks, living their life.

But the future belongs to the changeable.

Ok, time for some more units, and this time we've got the centrepiece of your entire force, the Coordinator

Representing from the Steel Legion faction, we have the Overseer.

Now, every mission needs a leader, someone to give orders and coordinate your units, you will only ever have one in your small forces.

While Coordinators often don't have bad combat stats, and may even have a few deadly surprises, but if you have then on the front lines you're doing something wrong.

The real value of the Coordinator is the buffs they give to your team (and occasionally the debuffs they give to your opponent). If your Coordinator dies, then not only have you substantially weakened your entire team, but it almost always causes a control check on your remaining units.

In short, keep them safe, keep them secure, and reap the benefits of their auras, targeted abilities, and other tricks up their sleeve.

Now, let's talk about the Overseer themselves. (Side note, I like the orb head that Patsy gave them)

Being a relatively informal militia (at least at the start), Overseer was not a combat designation, it was their job title. These men and woman would literally float over asteroid mining operations, using their suits integrated jump packs to manoeuvre and radio equipment to link all the other miners into one network.

From their high position they can spot potentially dangerous situations developing, incoming threats, all while keeping an eye on everyone working at once. Effective Overseers are respected members of their team, leaders though earned experience and mutual trust. Bad Overseers are like every shitty boss you ever had, acting like petty kings over their own tiny rock.

When it comes to combat, some things change, some stay the same.

Their built-in radio suite is still the means of control for Steel Legion squads, that goes down and the entire thing is thrown into disarray.

Most operations take place within simulated or real gravity so their jump packs no longer let them fly, but can still produce surprising bursts of speed.

Finally, for personal defence, they've picked up a interesting bit of mining equipment, originally meant to pin loose rock. With a few modifications it's now the Silver Rail, a magnetic projector that can fire blunt bolts hard enough to pin people to the cover they're hiding behind.

This weapon is meant to encourage them to stay behind your other units, taking potshots at the enemy.

Finally, like the R-545, the Overseer also had another early piece of art by @setzeri again

A very cool design, but I eventually decided to change it to something less sleek and more industrial, maybe I'll recycle it into something else. This fellow's a real space hero.
