After leaving his family, Don Julian Santana Barrera resided on an Island South of Mexico city. Not long after relocating, he made a chilling discovery on the shores of his island: a young girl, drowned in the lake. A doll came floating down the canals shortly afterward, changing the course of Santana Barrera's life and the shape of the island for years to come.
Barrera took the doll and hung it from a tree in order to appease the spirit of the dead girl. But, at least in the eyes of the man who now considered himself the island's caretaker, the one doll was not enough. For the next 50 years, Santana Barrera would scrounge dolls from the trash and from the canals, and hang them from the island's many trees. Some he'd hang whole, others in various states of disrepair — headless, torso-less, or taken apart in other ways.
Many believe that the girl never existed, that he completely made up the story or had some type of mental disorder that caused him to hallucinate it, due to there being no proof of the child actually existing. However, he devoted his entire life to her.
And the creepiest thing of all, in 2001, Don Julian Santana Barrera passed away. His body was discovered — you guessed it — drowned in the canal, in the exact place he always said he'd seen the little girl. In response, tourists began flocking to the island to pay tribute. They brought dolls of their own, and to this day people honor both Santana Barrera and the girl (whether she was real or not) by hanging up dolls in tribute. What do you think? Would you visit this creepy doll island in Mexico city?
I hadn't watched this 2 parter for a while, so I revisited it last night. For whatever reason, I found myself flashing back to a review I read a few years ago in which the critic basically said Grissom's feelings for Sara were unconvincing because he showed no emotion until he started yelling at Natalie in the interview room.
I remember the first time I read that and going huh. In a larger sense, it always amazes me that some people look for over the top emoting from characters as a sign that something is significant to them. The thing is that not all people are wired the same, and Gil Grissom is certainly not a man given to emotional outbursts. Some people--and I'm one of them--withdraw into themselves when faced with grievous circumstances.
To my mind, Billy presents Grissom as a man completely in a state of quiet desperation. He is working so hard to stay in control that you can see he is teetering on the edge of losing it completely, which he does with Natalie.
Every time I watch the scenes in the desert with Catherine, I can't help but think he would have fallen apart completely if he had been tracking Sara with anyone else but her. Every time he is close to losing it, Catherine knows exactly what to say to give him hope. For a woman who just learned how he felt about Sara, a relationship, intellectually, she never would have approved of, she is nothing but positive about Sara's chances. It is a testament to how well she knows and loves Grissom. I don't think anyone else on the team could have kept him upbeat and focused in the face of the odds.
A small part of some really wonderful storytelling.
“I used to be indecisive but now I’m not too sure” – Tommy Cooper
My mum used to use that quote all the time and I was today years old when I found out it was a one-liner from the comic genius, Tommy Cooper. I thought of this quote today for two reasons. One this is the second time that I’ve taken a photo of this dress, and the first time was a completely different colour version, and, because…
A work in progress, she's about half done. Definitely proud of how well she's turning out. I think she's definitely going to be the best one I've done. Haven't decided what I'm going to do with the other eye socket yet ....

I am sure many of us have been here! That late night trip to the kitchen when you can’t sleep and think a little nibble of something will work like a magical sleeping pill.
