Reading update:
Tumblr media
This one was...okay? It was a historical mystery, set in early 1930s London. I liked that part. I liked the fact that the main characters were all queer. But the characters themselves were very...eh? And the mystery was extremely high stakes but never felt that high stakes? Idk. I don’t think I’ll read the others in the series unless I’m really desperate. It wasn’t a bad book, but it wasn’t anything special, either.
Tumblr media
Man I was excited for this one. It was...fine. Not amazing. I really liked Jamie, but Wes was obnoxious as hell. Lots of bro-y casual misogyny, and a weird inability to acknowledge that Jamie is clearly bi, except when he’s thinking about how bi people have more trouble sticking with one person than straight or gay people. And there’s never any growth away from those opinions, so it’s just kind of like...oh, you’re a character with some really obnoxious opinions.
The sex scenes were hot, but in a like...fanfiction-y way? Like, I kept thinking, I would write this in a fic, I wouldn’t write it in ofic. So I definitely had some problems with it. That said, the love story was really sweet, and like I said, I did like Jamie. I’ve never read anything else by Elle Kennedy and honestly I wouldn’t after this one, but I have the sequel already, so we’ll see how it is. Definitely wouldn’t pick up any of her m/f romances, though.
Tumblr media
This was an Illumicrate book, and not something I would have picked up otherwise. It started out really promising—gorgeous writing, interesting characters, and a surprise heist plot! But the heist plot ran out of steam, most of the characters were never developed, the twist fell flat, and there was a deux ex machina that was utterly unearned. I think for a young YA audience, none of this would be a huge problem, but I was pretty eh about it. Not a bad book, but not a great book, either.
My edition is signed though, and very pretty!
Tumblr media
I was wary of this book, because I wasn’t super impressed with the first in the series, Hard Sell. This one was much better! Ray is a waaaay more likable character than what’s-his-face from Hard Sell. And I really enjoyed the demisexual rep with Elvin, since I’m pretty sure I fall somewhere in that gray ace or demisexual spectrum myself. This book did a better job of balancing the super serious plot with the romance than Hard Sell did, but I still think it was maybe a liiiittle too high-stakes? It worked for me for the most part but I sometimes felt like there was too much dissonance. And maybe like people should be freaking out more than they were. I’ll definitely keep reading Hudson Lin’s romances though, she redeemed herself with this one.
Tumblr media
I had no idea what to expect from this one. I read Proxy by Alex London...earlier this year? I think? God I can’t even remember when I read that, haha. It was okay, but it was very surface level. This one was much better. Super interesting world, and a culture where falconry is central, which owl-banding me really appreciated. There was no shying away from the falconry jargon, which I thought was pretty cool. I loved the characters. The two mains are a twin brother and sister, and the POV switches between the two of them (plus there’s a chapter in each section from another random POV). They’re both interesting and well-developed characters with their own distinct motivations and flaws, and their love for each other is *chef’s kiss*. This is the first in a trilogy so I need to pick up the other two.
Tumblr media
Just started this one. It’s about a non-binary kid who comes out to their parents and gets kicked out (WITHOUT SHOES. IN DECEMBER. WTF). They move in with their estranged sister and brother-in-law who they’ve never met and start a new school, and they’re clearly dealing with anxiety and panic attacks. I mean, who wouldn’t. They also haven’t come out in the new school, so everyone at the new school is still using he/him pronouns for them. And that’s about where I am. Enjoying it so far. I also have Mason Deaver’s newest book in my TBR pile (got it in a Rainbow Crate), so it’s always a relief when the first book you read by an author doesn’t suck, since you already have another, haha.

"This Law Will Be One of Scapegoating All Those Who Do Not Fit Into What Our Bureaucrats Think Canada Should Be": Bill C-11 is Back with Stunning Rebuke From Senator David Adams Richards
Senator David Adams Richards, an acclaimed Canadian author who has won Governor-General Awards for both fiction and non-fiction as well as a Giller Prize, provided the most memorable Senate speech for the ill-fated Bill C-10, stating on the Senate floor in June 2021 that “I don’t think this bill needs amendments; I think, however, it needs a stake through the heart.” Bill C-10 died on the order…

Discharge Petition for H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964
Record Group 233: Records of the U.S. House of RepresentativesSeries: General Records
This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. 🔎 YA Under the Radar Part 6 🔍
for a long time, I've been keeping (and eventually posting) lists of YA books I read that have received less attention than they deserve. it's been more than 12 months since I posted the last list in this series but I finally hit 50 the other day so here it is, the latest instalment of my YA Under the Radar series 😊
all of these books have less than 15,000 ratings on Goodreads, give or take, and were books that I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend. I've marked ones with queer rep with pride flag emojis and ones with disability rep with wheelchair symbols. be sure to check them out!

Summary: 8/10. A Remarkably Tender, Quietly Devastating Gay Love Story.
For expediency, I’ll get to the point: Harry Styles is very good in My Policeman.
It’s worth acknowledging upfront because the film’s success depends a lot on him and the cast. Stories like that of Tom Burgess are heartbreakingly familiar. Many people who cannot love freely trap themselves in soul-crushing arrangements that leave lasting scars. Without breaking new storytelling ground, My Policeman requires a deep investment in its central trio. As one character pointedly asks in the film, “who is My Policeman,” and why should we care?
Despite the open hostility of ‘50s British society and the simmering resentment in the Burgess ‘90s home, My Policeman is a remarkably tender film. Michael Grandage directs with a delicate hand that never intrudes or expressly telegraphs his intentions. He isn’t passive, but you feel the extra care he put into constructing the film’s two distinct eras. When Grandage does aim for stylistic flourishes, the results earn their desired emotion. For instance, the film’s ending scene is a startlingly heartfelt resolution to unrequited love and missed opportunities, worthy of its toying with the separate timelines.
My Policeman’s sense of loveliness is core to Tom and Patrick’s early relationship. With Ron Nyswaner’s gorgeous screenplay in hand, Grandage gently pulls the intoxicating warmth and comfort between the two men to the surface, separate but equal to the yearning and trauma. He strikes a compelling, beautiful balance. Tom and Patrick’s love scenes are intense, passionate, and sometimes explicit, but the sweetness remains. (Styles’ controversial comments in Rolling Stone make more sense in this context.) In their quieter and reflective moments, the heat doesn’t dissipate, as if only polite manners keep them from ravishing each other in public.
In the face of such all-consuming love, where does that leave Marion? My Policeman doesn’t paint her as either an outright villain or victim caricature. Instead, Marion is a fully-fledged human in her right, capable of compassion and cruelty when tasked with seeking what she thinks will make her happy. Even when her actions and words are reprehensible or predictable, she receives the same tender care as her husband and his lover. (If there is a villain in My Policeman, it is virulent homophobia, responsible for the film’s most brutal, unforgiving moments.)
This brings us back to My Policeman’s cast, responsible for realizing Grandage’s gentle vision. The six-person ensemble is uniformly terrific, with some standouts. Emma Corrin, resplendent as Princess Diana in The Crown’s most recent season, is even better as younger Marion. She covers the widest section of the emotional spectrum and delivers each beat with a magnetic radiance you can’t ignore. As the older Marion, Gina McKee reflects Corrin’s energies while adding a dimension of weariness and resignation that compounds Marion’s tragedy. Weariness also informs David Dawson’s excellent performance, alongside heartrending sparks of hope and passion that reflect Patrick’s past experiences.
As for Harry Styles, he gives a very good performance, easily his best thus far. He is still figuring himself out as an actor, struggling with a stilted line reading here and some slight stiffness there. However, he has moments of true excellence, especially with Dawson. The two have palpable chemistry, and Styles is at his most relaxed and authentic with him. Against such a seasoned cast, Styles holds his own. He proves that, while there’s room for growth, he has a future as an actor if he chooses to pursue it.
My Policeman’s greatest strength lies in its tender approach to its passionate romance. Michael Grandage conceives Tom Burgess’ story with a genuine sweetness that doesn’t stifle its vitality. On the contrary, it feels even more alive because of its preciousness. The film is a quietly devastating effort, reminding us that with love and pain capable of lasting a lifetime, we should always strive for the former.
When faced with the latter, however, My Policeman also reminds us that there can be a path beyond it if we try.

Any recommendations for good historical fiction or crime drama titles with main characters that are gay men?
How about titles that are both? Try the Page & Sommers series by Cat Sebastian, Simon Sampson Mysteries by David C. Dawson, The Savage Kind by John Copenhaver, and the upcoming (10/18/22) Lavender House by Lev A.C. Rosen.
(You can browse more crime fiction here: https://lgbtqreads.com/general-fiction/26054-2/ and more historical fiction here: https://lgbtqreads.com/general-fiction/realistic-historical-by-era/)

Raza Jaffrey as Dr. Neal Hudson, an ER attending physician. A British-Indian former surgeon, his approach is quieter and more people-oriented, than his mentor Dr. Rorish. He connected with Christa during her first year of residency. In "Hail Mary", Hudson becomes a surgical attending, and is once again assigned to the ER (season 1).[7][8]
Bonnie Somerville as Dr. Christa Lorenson, a mature first-year resident. She was married with a son who died of brain cancer. Her experience and her divorce inspired her to attend medical school (season 1).[7]
Melanie Chandra as Dr. Malaya Pineda, a first-year resident (seasons 1–2). She went to medical school and did her internship at Angels Memorial, and is more familiar with the ER. She is a lesbian, who was once involved with a resident when she was a medical student.
William Allen Young as Dr. Rollie Guthrie, an ER attending physician with a very nurturing style; he takes Angus under his wing in his first days in the ER. Guthrie's wife committed suicide, a death that strained his relationship with his son, a surgeon. During season 2, Guthrie is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and undergoes corrective neurological surgery to delay the onset of symptoms. Guthrie had a daughter who died from carbon monoxide poisoning while Guthrie tried to save his son from a similar death.
Harry Ford as Dr. Angus Leighton, a first-year resident. His father is on the hospital board. He feels overshadowed by that and by the achievements of his older brother, a former resident, but slowly grows in confidence. In his second year he is encouraged to transfer and become a surgical resident.
Benjamin Hollingsworth as Dr. Mario Savetti, a first-year resident. He grew up poor and sees emergency medicine as his way out. He worked as a bartender before medical school.
Luis Guzmán as Jesse Salander, known as "Mama". A senior nurse who manages the residents, Jesse is tough but caring and supportive of the students. He and Dr. Rorish have a long-term, close friendship.
Boris Kodjoe as Dr. Will Campbell, Chief of Surgery. In season 2 he is assigned as the new Chief of the combined Surgery and Emergency medicine department in order to save costs, causing strife between him and Rorish. Campbell has a disabled daughter (season 2–3; recurring in season 1).
Jillian Murray as Dr. Heather Pinkney, a surgical resident who becomes involved with Mario.(season 2; recurring in season 1). He quickly ends it when he hears about her side relationship with Dr. Campbell. She gets in further trouble when it's revealed she's providing Angus with Adderall. When confronted by Campbell, she threatens to turn their past relationship into a sexual harassment case.
Noah Gray-Cabey as Elliot Dixon, a first-year resident in the ER (season 2-3).
Emily Tyra as Noa Kean, an ER resident and former dancer. She begins a relationship with Dr. Mario Savetti (season 3; recurring season 2)
Emily Alyn Lind as Ariel Braeden (season 3; guest seasons 1–2)
Shiri Appleby as Dr. Carla Niven, a former resident at Angels Memorial and Malaya's ex-girlfriend. She is diagnosed with leukemia while pregnant, and refuses treatment not wanting to harm the baby.
Christina Vidal as Dr. Gina Perello, the replacement Director of the Emergency Department at Angels Memorial, who takes over when Dr. Taylor is put on leave.
Gabrielle Carteris as Amy Wolowitz, R.N., a nurse in the Emergency Department.
Meagan Good as Dr. Grace Adams, returns to the ER after volunteering in Haiti. She is Dr. Neal Hudson's ex-girlfriend.
Season 2[edit]
Nafessa Williams as Charlotte Piel, a new first-year resident in the ER who was formerly a popular teenaged actress.
Kathleen Rose Perkins as Dr. Amanda Nolan, a psychiatrist at the hospital.
Season 3[edit]
Tyler Perez as Diego Avila, son of a hospital board member and a first-year resident. He drives the staff and patients crazy by filming them to make a documentary about the Angels ER.
