Bell Media has asked the federal broadcast regulator to drop the spending requirements and dedicated airtime imposed on the company's local television news programming.
BCE's media arm says it wants the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to amend "certain conditions of licence" regarding its local English- and French-language TV stations, CTV and Noovo.
Bell Media calls it "regulatory relief" to counter online competition and help offset losses racked up in recent years.
"Unfortunately, Bell Media has been losing tens of millions alone in the production and delivery of local news," it said in a summary of the application posted Friday and filed on June 14 — the same day BCE announced it's cutting 1,300 positions, shutting or selling nine radio stations and closing two foreign bureaus. If ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ had been constructed like ‘RWBY’
This is meant more as a conversation-starting observation than a bitter complaint or even a sincere criticism.
In order to be a criticism, I would need to be convinced this is a problem rather than simply a difference to analyze.
Imagine if Avatar: The Last Airbender had started without Aang
For the first Volume, we're following a group of Waterbenders, Earthbenders, and non-benders as they fight the Fire Nations and also other people from the Earth Kingdom or Water Tribes.
Aang gets introduced in Volume 2 or 3.
And only after that Volume does the story reveal that Aang isn't just the Last Airbender, he's also the Avatar. And only then do the heroes need to take Aang to find all of his bending teachers, Avatar Roku's temple, and that spiritual guru who teaches him how to control the Avatar State.
If RWBY were constructed like Avatar
Our central protagonist would have been the Summer Maiden -- the one Maiden at the start of the story who isn't senile, a traitor, or dead. Presumably.
That’s not to say we wouldn’t have Team RWBY; Aang had Katara and Sokka, after all. The story could have started with Ruby and Yang who then find the Seasonal Maiden who serves as the central hero of the narrative.
And the Summer Maiden might or might not have started out with the Sword of Destruction, the spirit of which may or may not have already clued her into the existence of the gods and their test.

Do you want to BAN Fox News from Canadian Television?
Turns out the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission wants you, fellow Canadian Resident/Citizen, to weigh in on the decision.
All you need to do is follow the above link, sort by deadline, and find this beauty who's deadline is June 2nd.
Now I hear you: why?
Well, Canada has anti-discrimination laws in it's constitution, and Fox News does a LOT of discrimination based on Sex, Gender, Race, Religion, Creed, etc. All protected by Canada. Their recent hate campaign is on Transgender, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Queer and Questionkng folk, Aromantics, Asexuals, Intersex, and pretty much anything under the rainbow flag that fights for the equality of minorities. It's alt-right radicalized "news" networks like this that seek to fearmonger and promote the terrorization of minorities. Their segments aren't grounded in fact but twisting the narrative deliberately to suit their goals of promoting hardcore christian and facist values.
As Canadians, which yes, I count those of you residing in Canada who have yet to obtain citizenship as one of us, it's our duty to try and make this country of ours as accepting of all people from all walks of life. Our diversity is what unites us, a programme like this seeks only division. It should not be on our airwaves in direct opposition of who we are as a people.

Canadian podcasters platforms now subject to CRTC regulation.
Interesting piece.
I’d say the majority of the podcasts I listen to originate outside of Canada. But the Canadian ones are becoming increasingly commercialized with ad spots and pleas for support - so that they sound like commercial radio.
And this will likely only speed up matters.

“...The CRTC has opened a Part 1 Application for the removal of Fox News from the list of non-Canadian programming services authorized for distribution....”
“The CRTC is obligated to investigate whether the continued broadcasting of Fox News on Canadian television is in line with the Television Broadcasting Regulations. People in Canada deserve to know that the news broadcast on Canadian airwaves is reliable and objective, and marginalized groups must be protected from malicious propaganda,” states the letter. “The public interest clearly demands a consultation on the appropriateness of the continued inclusion of Fox News on the List.”
The deadline for comments is June 2.

The History of Canadian Radio (TL;DR)
This was taken from CANCON: A History of Canadian Radio and the CRTC
This was taken from CANCON: A History of Canadian Radio and the CRTC
This paper will mark the beginning of the Canadian music industry in 1730, as this year saw the start of the urbanization and consolidation of music in Canada. Although a lot could be written about the importance of traditional, and orally transmitted music in Canada it is difficult to fully determine its impact and how it…

The House of Cards Crumbles: Why the Bell Media Layoffs and Government’s Failed Media Policy are Connected
Bell’s announcement this week that it is laying off thousands of workers – including nearly 500 Bell Media employees – has sparked political outrage with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau characterizing it as a “garbage decision.” The job losses are obviously brutal for those directly affected and it would be silly to claim that a single policy response was responsible. Yet to suggest that the…

The online steaming act passed.
I'm not always on board with JJ in his opinions, but on this, I'm 100% with him. Fuck this. Echochamber is what they wanna give. And I've had no love for the CRTC for YEARS, and they are the ones who are going to decide how this law is applied....
This isn't going to be good for our online experience.
