# Dcu x Dp 160
Jazz works at Arkham Asylum and is The Joker's new psychiatrist.
After the Joker breaks out he makes his way to his new psychiatrist to either kill her or make her into another Harley Quinn. The Bats go to Jazz's home to try and protect her only to get there and see the Joker on the ground with a big glowing dog over him and Jazz against the kitchen counter with a mug of coffee talking to the Joker.

Mini Phantom Invasion.
Hi, I plan for this to be a series of inter connected one shots based on some of my favorite prompts. I’m a huge Tim Drake/Red Robin x Danny phantom shipper, so for now most of my fics will feature them. Once I’ve end this series, I’ll try branching out to other relationships Danny could have with the bats.
I can’t remember where I got all of them but I’ll try to tag as I find them. If anyone notices a prompt or plot they’ve seen please let me know or tag the person it came from. I’m knew to posting on Tumblr so I’m still getting used to how to tag and insert links. Thank you.
🤍🖤💚💙💚🖤🤍
Chapter 1
Danny was not having a good day. He’d had a fight with his parents about ghost hunting, stating clearly that he had no interest in their bias views on an entire species based on one encounter when they were young. It had escalated to the point where they blamed his lack of interest on the fact that he was spending to much time with his sister and his female friends.
He’d had enough! He left mid argument and was contemplating just packing up and moving into the Ghost Zone permanently. As he’d slammed the door he could hear his parents shouts for him to come back and once again blaming his behaviour on a ghost.
What did his sexuality have to do with ghost hunting? And what was wrong with wanting to be more feminine sometimes? He honestly didn’t understand why they found it so weird or wrong for him to swap between genders and pronouns? Jazz, Sam and Tucker accepted him as he was, they didn’t but an eye when he would randomly say ‘she’, ‘they’ or ‘him’, they just continued the conversation with the new pronoun and that was that. They understood and accepted that sometime he felt male or female or neither. He was lucky to have them.
The day just seemed to continue down hill from there. It was summer vacation so Sam was forced to spend time with her parents at some rich holiday resort, Tucker had won a spot in some sort of tech camp and Jazz was still at College working on a finals thesis and was unable to come back for the summer. He was essentially alone for the summer. He could hang out with Val but she was working a lot and he didn’t want to bother her. He still felt guilty about her dad losing his job, even if it wasn’t entirely his fault.
*****
After leaving the house he’d found a place to transform and let the cool rings of light soothe him and took off into the sky. After finding out they could survive in space it became their favourite way to relax, they’d spend ours exploring space, even hang out on the moon. Thank you high speed and portal powers. Their Phantom form had changed in the last two years. People could no longer tell if they were male or female and he looked less human now. Thankfully, they looked nothing like their alternate future self. When their legs melded together their ghostly tail looked more eel like and their ears were longer and thiner, resembling delicate fins. Jazz and their friends had joked about how the acted like cat ears. Lastly their face was now a pale mint color, almost white and translucent, his eyes were still the same luminous ecto-green with deep blue pupils. The only similarity to Dan, that they could see, were the fangs and longer hair both of which were also present in their human form.
*****
They had been flying around Amity, a somewhat lazy patrol of his claimed haunt, it was a calm night. Ever since they had defeated Pariah Dark the other ghost had calmed down and came to Amity less frequently. A few still came to bug them, namely Skulker, Ember, Johny and Kitty. Young Blood and Boxy more frequently than the others and of course Cujo came by often. Their visits were more to do with fulfilling their obsessions than anything else. Danny’s obsession was Space but so was Protection. They needed to fulfil both to some extent or suffer from a form of ghost hunger. It was a win win situation even if they did go back… home? Was it really still a home?
Before they could go down that dark spiral again their instincts took over and they narrowly dodged a bright green shot that had been aimed at their head. Whirling around and flying higher out of range they looked at their attacker and just stared.
“of course it’s them.” They muttered. Before repeating it with more venom than they thought they were capable of. Which was shocking because not even Vlad had receive as much hatred in the entirety of the time they’ve known him than in that split second they felt it towards their own parents. “Of fucking course it’s them!”
They blink away the shock of such an intense emotion and huffed. Not even bothering to acknowledge them they turned around to leave. That had been a mistake. They’d barely made it a few paces before pain bloomed across their back as an Eco-blast shredded the fins on their lower back and bit deep into their flesh. They bit back a cry of shock as they felt themselves plummet from the sky. It took a moment but they gathered enough concentration to open a portal. He didn’t care where they ended up as their only thought was ‘Somewhere safe.’
They fell through and just before they lost consciousness, they heard their parents yell after him.
“Get back here you ghost scum, so we can rip you apart molecule by molecule!”
“We won’t forgive you for corrupting our Danny!”
‘Of course… It’s always Phantoms fault…’ Danny’s world turned black as he continued to fall. Maybe when they opened their eyes again all of it would have been a dream.
*****
Somewhere in the infinite green a Grandfather clock chimed. A screen flickered. Time flowed on.
“All is as it should be.”
Chapter 2
(I'm Not A Cynic Song by Alec Benjamin)
Danny pulled their little floating ducks out of their personal pocket dimension and set them to gently drift in the hot spring. They had found it while wandering the forest. Their lower back still ached and they were a little worried about how it hadn’t healed completely yet.
*****
They didn’t know where they were or how long they had been in this dimension but they were safe and alone for the time being. When they’d woken up, the first thing they did was try to figure out where they were. thankfully no-one had discovered them, tucked away in the underbrush of the forest they had landed in. They’d let invisibility wash over them and flew high enough to get a view of the land. They recognised asian architecture and flew in the direction they had spotted a small farming village. With a closer look they determined they had landed in some version of Japan. Instinctually they knew they were not in their home dimension. Everything, even the air and feel of the atmosphere felt slightly shifted to the left. It was like that feeling of entering a hotel room, they were all essentially the same but there were the little details that told you it was a different hotel.
*****
Brushing the thought, and everything associated with the reason they were injured and alone in a foreign dimension, aside. They coiled their tail in the centre of the spring and sank down until their lower back was submerged in the healing warmth of the spring. Closing their eyes in content they began to hum. Their eyes shot open when they felt a gentle nudge against his arm but smiled gently at the little wisp as it bobbed and drifted in the breeze. They continued to hum and watched in amusement as more joined the first. The little orbs of light ranged in color from soft pale blues to vibrant greens and warm reds, oranges and yellows.
They lost themselves in their song as they twirled in and played with the water, creating little floating ice crystals that caused mist to form around them as hot and cold air danced around each other. Humming soon gave way to words as they swayed to the rhythm only they could hear.
“I'm just bein' realistic, bein' honest with myself
I've tried bein' optimistic but it doesn't seem to help
So I'll just have to admit this is the hand that I've been dealt
I'm not bein' pessimistic, just bein' honest with myself”
They were thankful to Pandora, who had taught them to sing in an effort to train his ghostly wail, for realising he was taking on the form and habits of a triton.
“I'm not a cynic, oh, today's just not my day
I've tried to spin it 'bout a thousand different ways
But from every angle, oh, the outlook is the same
I swear that I'm not a cynic, my glass just has no water in it today”
They poured all the hurt, betrayal, anger and loneliness into their voice, allowing them to release it all in a more melodic call than his previous wail. That, as pandora explained, had been an unhealthy burst of emotion and they were lucky they hadn’t blown out their vocal cords the last few times they used it.
“I swear that I'm not a cynic, my glass just has no water in it”
Through their practice they found they could influence emotions but not out right control them. They were glad, influencing them was bad enough, he didn’t want to manipulate anyone. They didn’t want to spend their life wondering if the people around them truly cared or if they had somehow manipulated them into caring. They may me a budding empath but they still struggled to tell the difference between a sincere emotion and a projected emotion.
“You only get that which you're given, it's not always up to you
Not every Sunday is a picnic 'cause the sky ain't always blue
You can't just change the weather by changing your point of view
Some days you have to wait until the storm just passes through”
Danny’s voice grew louder as their emotions poured out into the lyrics. They knew they still had their friend, their sister, Elle and everyone in the Infinite Realm. They were also the Half Ghost son of ghost hunters and scientist with a heavy bias against Ecto-entities. They will be the rulers of an entire realm in only a few short years.
“I'm not a cynic, oh, today's just not my day
I've tried to spin it 'bout a thousand different ways
But from every angle, oh, the outlook is the same
I swear that I'm not a cynic, my glass just has no water in it today”
They gave a bitter sweet smile as they watched the wisps duck and weave between the ice crystals. They looked around for their ducks and their smile turned a little more sad as they waved their hand and the little ducks joined the dancing lights and crystals. Each one was modelled after his favourite comic book vigilante. They’d had to save them from the dump truck once, they’d been looking for them when he’d asked his parents, their father had made an off hand comment about how he should throw out old toys and they’d panicked. They’d manage to find and save them all just before the truck arrived.
“So like a boat on the ocean, I'll rock with the waves
God, I'm so sick of this notion that I have to fake
Fake my emotions and pretend I'm okay
So like a boat on the ocean, I'll just rock with the waves”
Jazz had bought them for them, after they had told her about being gender fluid and pan, they were probably one of their most treasured possessions. Jazz had gone on a whole spiel about how it’s important that she show support and provide a safe and understanding environment. They hadn’t been listening, they’d been crying. To caught up in their overflowing emotions and happiness. It lasted a day, their parents had been less than understanding, with their passive-aggressive comments and actions.
“I'm not a cynic, oh, today's just not my day
I've tried to spin it 'bout a thousand different ways
But from every angle, oh, the outlook is the same
I swear that I'm not a cynic, my glass just has no water in it today”
Their frown returned. They had shot them, that in itself wasn’t unusual, as Phantom. Isn’t that a sad thought. What was was that there had been no prior warning. It was a sniper shot, from their mother. Only their heightened hearing and instinct had saved them from ending up dead dead instead of a Halfa. That bothered him
“I swear that I'm not a cynic, my glass just has no water in it today”
They returned to humming the last notes of their song as the dunked under the water to rinse off. They popped back up and gathered their ducks, floated up out of the spring and laughed as the wisps twirled around him. They landed on the ground, allowing their legs to form and walked off into the forest, dancing lights trailing after them. Completely unaware of their watchers.
*****
The shadows slunk away to report their findings. While two birds hesitantly returned to their temporary nest, One worried and wanting to help the being that reminded him so much of his younger siblings. The other having felt a connection to a being that had shared similar experiences, someone they wanted to help and if they wanted to end the beings loneliness… that was no one’s business but their own. Both slept little that night, both determined to find the being again and offer what they could to help.

If he is a Monster, what were they?
A03
Danny is used to nicknames after being exposed they changed for the worst.
Danny is used to nicknames. His parents had always been big on them.
Dan and Dan-o to start.
The normal ones. Nothing extreme nothing bad. Then high school came.
Fenturd, Fen-toenail, and Fentonowski
Dash’s insult we’re comical at best. His own way to attempt to humiliate Danny. Danny did that well on his own. Sleeping in class, the drooling. His pants falling off.
Then the ghost appeared all on their own.
Ghost boy
Ghost punk
Baby pop
Only to annoy him. Danny was just used to nicknames. New ones always seemed to take him by surprise, but names never really hit him hard in the end. That’s not to say they never bugged him but something he could live with.
Then they changed for the worst.
Freak
Abomination
And the one that hit the most.
Monster
All because he was a halfa. All because of an explosion gone wrong. A freak accident. Something he didn’t want. He shouldn’t have gone into the portal, but it should have had some safeguards. Becoming part ghost had never been a plan. He just wanted to be an astronaut and work for NASA. That would never happen now.
He just had to be exposed.
Skulker had to hunt him during school hours. Had to expose him with the silly nickname he gave Phantom. Called him ghost boy. Threatening to skin him. Danny left to transform only for Skulker to call Phantom ghost boy.
Something so simple. Such a minor detail had sent his life spiraling downwards.
Valerie was the one to piece it together. She was the one who outed him. All because she held a grudge against Cujo.
Jack and Maddie held no sympathy.
Grave robber
Body snatcher
MONSTER
Just an uncaring unfeeling ghost. One who stole the appearance of their son to hurt them. This had to be why Danny’s grades slipped. That had to be the reason he snuck out.
A monster had taken over their son.
He tried to explain it to them. Explain he was still him. That he was still alive. It wasn’t his fault that his molecules got all arranged.
They didn’t listen.
Just ecto blast and screams. Swearing they would hunt him down and make him release their son. That he had to just ruin everything. He was the one who brought the ghost into the town. He was the one causing problems for Amity.
Every event, every ghost was all Phantom's fault.
Danny. The main reason life in town still functioned. Did he accidentally suggest to Technus to take over the world? Technically yes. Danny still fixed his own problems. Even if he did have help. Imagine the damage that would be done without him. Spectra would have caused Jazz to go out with a bang, Box Ghost would have invaded every store to take their boxes, and the damage the ancients would have done.
Danny didn’t tear the hole in reality. He didn’t keep the portal open. Wasn’t injecting ecto-entities with experimental drugs. Danny wasn’t antagonizing a whole new dimension.
Well… he might… have you know antagonizing some people.
Mainly his rogues. They didn’t count.
If anyone was the problem. It was Jack and Maddie.
They opened the portal. They infected Vlad with ecto acne. Not properly confirming the results, Jack used soda rather than a purifier. The Doctor Fenton’s experiments should have failed. They had no reason to be successful in the one thing that endangered the world.
They let Jazz raise him.
Too consumed with their work, constantly going after ghosts. Almost every adventure ended with a ghost. Days used to be spent outdoors pr at parks now in a lab. Coming to his school to hunt ghosts to “protect” them. Neither he nor Jazz felt that was true. It was all to fulfill a sick twisted obsession to tear a being molecule by molecule. The lab, the OSHA not approved lab, was a perfect place for a subject.
The random explosions, blowing the power lines, once blowing up the town water supply, and so much more. There was no care for anything minus the lab or showing off to the public.
The lack of protocols killed him. Even if he had walked in of his own free will, they should have had a lock or anything. Not a basement just open to their children. They weren’t even a danger to just their so-called “family”. No, they endangered the town every day.
Destruction of buildings. Jack drives through walls, hits and runs, and the number of times they’ve nearly hit the citizens. Why did the people of Amity do nothing? Why weren’t zoning laws enforced? Why didn’t the town do anything?
Why was it excused?
The school had been infected. The parents were just okay with not seeing their kids. Those guards didn’t even look human. Even if they were contagious. They didn’t question why they couldn’t see their kids behind a glass window. Or even a photo. Nothing.
The only adult who seemed to care was Mr. Lancer. He pushed students to do their best. He cared about them. In his own way.
Despite everything Jack and Maddie have done the town trusted their words blindly. Anyone could see their research was biased, that their experiments were dangerous, and if anyone bothered to look the ghost coming into town always came in by FentonWorks.
The ones who opened the town to untold terrors. The ones who blew the power grid constantly. Causing blackouts. The two who caused more damage than those in the infinite realm. Minus Vortex and Undergrowth.
No one in town listened. Valerie only concurred with Jack and Maddie. Accusing Phantom of planning to ruin her life.
Monster
Sam and Tucker spoke up. They were ignored. The Fentons Claimed he was controlling them. Jazz spoke up, she was just caught in her grief.
Danny wasn’t wanted by anyone. Except for his friends and sister. Then those who hunted him.
If the town didn’t want him so, be it.
Packing wasn’t hard, the four already had bags. Getting out of town wasn’t hard, somehow the school boiler exploded. Everyone in town assumed the monster had started an attack.
No one would expect a vice principal with a key. Would they?
Leaving town was hard. They all grew up there it is always hard to leave memories behind. They’d have to flee the country as well. Seek asylum somewhere else. Somewhere without the GIW.
Amity would always see him as a monster.
If he was a monster, what were they?

My Headcannon about cores and animal-like ghost/non-human ghost in Danny phantom
So… before I forget it, I gotta write it down like… right now takes deep breath Hear me out As some may know, I absolutely hate with passion the B*tch Hateman take on ghost as "creatures of another dimension" because the same show showed the deaths of some characters like… PoinDexter- incident with bullying/suffocated to death in his own locker that now he hunts Cujo- When Axion labs no longer needed dogs to protect the place, they put down all the dogs, Cujo comes back from death looking for his chewing toy Desiree- heart broken after being exiled by the sultan who was her true love, being taken away from her greatest wishes she now grants everyone their most wanted wishes under a great prize Ember- the series didn´t openly said it but the lyrics of her song say she may have died in a fire after his boyfriend left her and she was chasing her dream of being a great artist so he and everyone can "remember her name", after her death with that mentality her only goal was to have world wide fame that would now give her power The problem comes when Butch tried to modify this in season 3 with him adding elementary powers and more monster-like ghost for him to say "monsters from another dimension"
But!!!, the fandom saves the day with the idea of… cores!! and ghost being all able to shapeshift
For anyone new around here basically cores are the main part of a ghost/soul inside of their chest that can have an elementary power besed of their personality/their death. So far I´ve seen Danny- ice core (because of his chill/brave/risk taking attitude) Danny- lighting core (because of his "death") Vlad- fire core/lighting core (because of his agressive/passionate nature and… yeah his "death")
So far it has been told only ghost with great power can have an elementary core, so it leaves with the question: why do not only halfas have this and we get ghost like Nocturne, Vortex, Undergrowth, The far Frozen and they absolutely look not human if I´m going with the "all ghost are death people"? My headcanon for this is… They used to be human beings but training their power over an element has modified their apearence to adapt to that element! Maybe this can even justify ghost puberty (another headcanon as an excuse for Danny getting fangs or why the hell Vlad looks like a freaking vampire) it would be their cores getting too powerful it starts to modify their body in two ways: Based on obssesion- it would make them look more like something related to their obssesion, like… I like to think for example we got: Vlad- his obssesion being his love for Maddie it would be interpreted as an unhealthy love because he wants to have her more as a trophy, why?, well in the series it has been seen he doesn´t care if she gets hurt by his actions like killing Jack (that would hur her really bad because they have shown to love each other), kidnaping/killing her children (with Jazz in Secret weapons, he was perfectly fine with the chance of having her to fight Danny but when she turned around he was willing to kill her with the nanobots, with Danny… the many times he has tried to kill him to "join" him), he only wants to have her, so I think his core interpretated it as him getting a prey to suck the life out of here more than a partner, so his ghost half would be a vampire.Based on training- this one is the one I mostly came up to, it would imply the ghost not getting focused on their original obsession but instead trying to improve their power they got, especally if they focus on their core, my headcanons with this one are: Undergrowth- He maybe once was an activist trying to protect nature, getting killed by a great coorporation in the process (maybe thats why he instantly took Sam as an apprendice/queen) when he died he at first didn´t wanted revenge because he died in a good cause, that´s when he noticed because for his love of nature he had got the power to make flowers and all kind of plant grow, happy of getting paradise in his own way he would turn his liar into a giant garden, gradually getting better at it with training until his liar turned into a jungle with even sentient plants that behaved like animals (as we saw in urban jungle) finally changing his body showing how he got total control of this power, but maybe getting too focused on his power and looking anyone in te ghost zone had an obsession similar to his, alone and finally thinking his liar was not enough he tries now to overtake other liars for his plants (his children), maybe having a fight with the far Frozen territory (maybe that´s why Frostbite knows about him), even trying his original obssesion protect plants and nature in earth (urban jungle). The far Frozen- unlike Undergrowth who would be like the only one of his kind, Ice cores would be quite common to get because of different reasons leading to… when a ghost with ice core is willing to train it´s power they would either… die (destabilize) from hypothermia (like how Danny almost did) or completly master it, leading to… their bodies would change into the appearence of the far Frozen (maybe that´s also why Frostbite says Danny is more similar to them than from what he thinks) and so, the ghost with trained ice cores can try and go to the Far Frozen territory to ask for guidence or join them (I totally think Danny would go through this if he decides to regularly train his powers as he did through the entire series)

An Honest Talk
(Got to the episode where Valerie gets the ghost hunting stuff. I just want her to be happy and not Filled With Vengeful Rage so, here's this.)
Jazz sees the whole thing.
Really, Valerie isn't even good at hiding it. As soon as that Ghost Hunter shows up at that school game, Jazz figures it out. Not just because her voice is the same, but because of the insults she shouts while hanging in that basketball hoop. Sure, Jazz is in a higher grade, but she's heard that A-Lister group plenty of times in the hallways and after school.
They're real jerks. But not murderous jerks.
So she decides to do something about it. No-one attacks her baby brother. ... Well, except other ghosts. But Jazz can't always help with those.
This? No problem.
"Hey, Valerie."
Valerie jolts, yelping and almost dropping what is clearly some kind of ghost-detecting device. "Who are- ugh, aren't you Fenton's sister? What do you want?"
"To talk to you," Jazz says in her most empathetic voice. "I noticed you're having kind of a rough time."
"Why do you care?"
"Because my brother does." Cares about not being pummeled, at least. But Jazz is sure Danny hopes the best for his schoolmate, even with the attacks.
Valerie huffs. "Great, pity from the loser kids."
"Come on, it won't hurt to talk about it?"
"Talk about what? That some ghost kid and his dog ruined my life? That we're broke, and all my friends hate me for it? yeah, talking will fix everything."
Jazz sits down on a bench, and pats the seat next to her. Valerie looks away.
But then... she sighs. And sits. "I keep thinking about that five hundred dollar shirt I ruined. Maybe if e hadn't bought that, or I hadn't worn it to school, we'd be a little better off right now."
"It's not your fault."
Valerie grits her teeth. "Yeah. It's that ghost kid's."
"Ghost kid?"
"... You believe in ghosts, right? Because of your parents?"
Jazz nods. "Plus, that thing during the school game,, Kind of hard to deny."
"Heh. Yeah. ... That dog broke into the place my dad was working for. he was showing off what he did for their security, and none of it stopped the dog or the kid. And then they showed up again at the garage sale and wrecked our moving van, and the dog stole my lunch after all my friends rejected me!"
Valerie wipes her eyes, scowling. "It's not fair!"
Jazz hands her a tissue. "It's not, not at all."
"I wanna destroy that kid," Valerie growls. "Like he destroyed me."
"... Valerie... how old is he?"
"About my age, I think."
"And he's a ghost."
"Yeah. And?"
"So... how do you think a ghost kid comes to be?"
Valerie doesn't reply. But after a moment, her eyes widen a little. "Oh... no, no, but... but he's a kid. He can't be any older than me."
"Yeah," Jazz says softly. "So something horrible must have happened to him already."
Valerie looks at the device in her hands. "... But... he still ruined my life." She sounds a bit unsure now.
"Maybe he didn't mean to. I mean... imagine one day you wake up and everything is... different. Suddenly you've got no gravity, and-and no-one can see you sometimes and you're this weird thing-"
God, how scared was Danny when it happened? She's pretty sure by now that it was The Accident that did it, she can't think of anything else that explains it. What was it like for him, waking up as something different?
"It would be tough," Jazz finishes, looking at Valerie.
Valerie still won't meet her eyes, looking at the beeping device. "Then why is he following me around?"
"... Well... does he show up first, or the dog?"
Valerie thinks for a long moment. "... The dog. It's always the dog."
"So maybe he's trying to catch it."
"... I mean, I guess that could be it. But he's been fighting me!"
"And you've been fighting him."
"But-! ... Aw, geez..." Valerie deflates. "What do I do now, then? I can't... I can't keep attacking some kid who... we've barely lived, I can't just make it so that he's barely lived twice."
Jazz stands up and offers her hand. "How about we try talking to him?"
Valerie looks at her. "For real?" She's skeptical.
Jazz nods. "For real. Maybe we can clear some things up."
Valerie turns away again. And then, with a hefty sigh...
Takes Jazz's hand.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Cujo?" Danny calls out. "Cujo! We need to get you back to the Ghost Zone, buddy! Come on, where is he?"
Someone clears their throat behind him, and he yelps as he shoots up in the air.
He turns around, and sees possibly the worst thing he could see right now.
His sister, and his hunter.
"Hello, Ghost Boy!" Jazz calls out.
"Um... hi." Danny waves, still looking startled.
Jazz nudges Valerie, and Valerie huffs. "Hi," she says shortly. Jazz smile at her, though.
"I'm here to mediate a talk between you two," Jazz says, walking closer (and somewhat pulling Valerie along behind her). "I figured there might be more to this story than we all three think."
"Um, you're not- I mean, I'm a ghost, you're just... casual about this?"
Jazz nods. "My parents are well-versed with ghosts, this is nothing."
A straight-up lie. Jazz hadn't even believed in ghosts until she peeled Spectra. But maybe it's to save face for Valerie? Or maybe Jazz recognizes him as the ghost from that day.
"Anyway," Jazz says, "Valerie here has something to say."
Valerie, arms cross and back hunched angrily, glares at Danny. "Who are you, and why are you out to get me?"
Danny floats back down to the ground, standing on it now. "I'm, um... Phantom-"
Valerie gives him a disbelieving look.
"Uh, Ghost Names are uh, different! It's this whole thing. And, I'm not out to get you, I swear. It's all been terrible coincidences."
Valerie scoffs.
"Val, we're here to listen," Jazz reminds gently. "Let him explain his side of things, and then you can explain yours, and we'll come to a solution. Trust me, I read a book about this."
Danny doesn't doubt it. "I don't own that dog, I found him wandering around outside. I thought he was cute at first, and then he turned into the big dog that keeps haunting you."
"And why's he doing that?" she snips.
"I don't know yet." Danny rubs the back of his neck, embarrassed. "I'm trying to send him back to the Ghost Zone, but he keeps coming back out! I'm starting to think it's some cliche 'unfinished business' thing. But until I can figure it out I don't know how to get rid of him. All I can do is try to minimize the damage."
"Doing a great job." Valerie rolls her eyes. "Ruining my father's business, ruining our garage sale, ruining my lunch!"
"I swear, I was trying to help! He's really, really hard to get under control! He's like five times my size!"
"And you can't grow bigger and handle it that way?" Valerie retorts.
"No! I'm only a few months into this, I-"
He cuts himself off at the look on Valerie's face. "What?"
"A few months? ... So... so I could've known you?" Horrified, is the best word for her expression.
Danny shrinks, holding his bicep and hunching a little. "Um, nevermind. I just mean I'm not super powerful."
"No, no, we're going back. Did I know you? Is this a revenge thing?"
"What? No! I already told you, I'm trying to help prevent things from getting worse! And... no. I'm a loser kid, and you're popular."
"... Was," Valerie says quietly. "... All my friends ditched me when I lost my money."
"That's awful."
Valerie nods. "I don't know why I thought they liked me for more than money, looking back. But it still hurts. Being a lonely loser is the worst."
"Tell me about it," Danny mutters. "I mean, I have friends, but sometimes some stuff just makes you feel alone no matter what."
He thinks he sees Jazz tear up at that, but he's not sure. He's distracted by Valerie letting out a sob.
"I don't have anything left," she says, voice quavering. "I don't have the popularity, I don't have money, I don't have the grades..."
"... So you turned to revenge?" Jazz's voice is soft.
Valerie sobs again, and Jazz gives her some comforting slow pats on the back. She looks at Danny, nodding at Valerie.
Danny gets the hint. "You... you could, um, make something, more?"
Valerie gives a somewhat bitter teary chuckle. "What is that supposed to mean, huh? I'm already hunting ghosts. It's... something."
"... You could try to make new friends."
"Oh sure, that's easy. I'm a social pariah."
"So am I. But even just one or two friends helps a lot."
"You got a lot of ghost buddies?"
"... Humans, actually. An if I can make friends with some high school kids as a loser and a ghost, you can make friends too. You just might have to lower your social radar a bit."
Valerie rubs her arm. "... You're really not out to get me, are you?"
"No, I'm not. I want to protect people, not hurt them."
"... I'm sorry I shot those missiles at you."
"I'm sorry I couldn't keep the dog contained."
"... I'm sorry you're a ghost so young."
Danny snuffles a little. "... Thanks." Sometimes he is, too.
Valerie looks at her hand, and then holds it out to him. "Truce? I won't mess with you. I can't promise the same about that dog if it keeps showing up, but I won't mess with you."
Danny sighs. "So you're keeping the weapons."
"Oh, you know I am. Even if I'm not hunting you, now that I know about ghosts I want to be prepared."
"I guess I understand that." Danny shakes her hand. "Truce."
Jazz grins. "See? Just needed a real, meaningful talk!"
Valerie laughs a little, wiping her eyes again. "Yeah, I guess. But... now what? Who do I blame for this?"
"Probably the boss who decided that Ghosts Suddenly Existing was your father's fault," Danny says.
Valerie's eyes harden. "Yeah. Yeah, I can go with that."
"But," Danny and Jazz say at once. They look at each other, and Jazz let's Danny speak.
"But," Danny says again, "Maybe focus on making some more friends, first. One thing about us losers, is we don't ditch someone just for money reasons."
"... I'll give it a shot." Valerie smiles a little at Danny. "With better aim than the ones I took at you."
Danny chuckles a bit.
They both wave goodbye, Jazz and Valerie leaving Danny to continue his search.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hi."
Danny, Sam, and Tucker all look up. Valerie is standing nervously with her brown paper bag of lunch. Tucker brightens up, and Sam gives a little, slightly suspicious, wave.
Danny scoots over. "Wanna sit with us?"
Valerie looks over at the A-Lister table. They're all staring, smirking, whispering.
Mocking.
She looks back at the 'losers'.
They're looking at her with... openness.
"Yeah. Sure."
She sits down, and gets out her lunch. For a minute, she just listens to them talk while she unpacks the sandwich.
"Hey, is that peanut butter and honey?" Sam asks. Valerie nods.
Sam holds up a thick roast beef sandwich. "My parents are trying to get me to eat meat again, but I'm staying vegetarian. Want to trade?"
Valerie blinks. "Uh... sure?"
They swap sandwiches. Valerie looks at the sandwich, mentally trying to figure out the carbs and calories and fat content-
She looks around the table. No-one else is analyzing their food. Or, judging hers.
She takes a bite. It's pretty good.
This... is pretty good.
She smiles, and laughs a little at a joke Danny makes.
Yeah. This is pretty good.

Danny Fenton appreciation post
Tumblr media
Danny as protagonist is a very interesting character. He's a complex teenager with both virtues and flaws. Throughout the series he learns how to control his powers and the responsibility that comes with having them.
On the surface, Danny is your average teenager: He likes hanging out with his friends, wants to fit in, likes to have some fun every once in a while and is a bit impulsive.
One defining characteristic of Danny is how he's struggles with his own insecurities. He's not very popular at school and is often the target of bullying, specially from Dash who frecuently teases him in the series.
One of the reasons Danny is considered "weird" by his classmates is because of his parents: They are ghosts hunters. They sometimes embarrass Danny in front of his peers without meaning to. This has lead him to have a few arguments with his dad like it was shown in 'A million dollar ghost'.
His own insecurities sometimes cause problems with his friends as well. For example, in "Attack of the Killer Garage Sale" he left his friends behind to hang out with the 'popular kids', who didn´t care too much abou him.
Tumblr media
Danny dumps on himself many times during the series, in 'My Brother's keeper' he describes himself as a "screw up" and believes he's loser:
"Great, he (the ghost) got away again. Another ringing endorsement for the town screw-up." (Blaming himself for not being able to catch the ghost)
He also has a complicated relationship with his ghost half. He thinks he's a freak of nature because of his ghost powers.
Spectra: "What are you? A ghost trying to fit in with humans? Or some creepy little boy with creepy little powers?"
Danny: "Both! Uh...neither! I don't know."
Spectra: "You're a freak! Not a ghost, not a boy! Who cares for a thing like you?"
He's usually very afraid of people finding out about his secret identity as a ghost. Since ghosts are seen are evil in Amity Park he's scared that they would not accept him or would try to hunting him.
One of his deepest fears is his parents finding out about his secret and trying to run experiments on him. He knows that his parents will "accept him no matter what" but he still can't help being scared everytime he hears them talking about dissecting ghosts.
Tumblr media
'Identity crisis', while a funny episode, it's very important for understanding Danny.
In this episode Danny separates his superhero ghost half from his human half. In one scene we get this exchange between ghost Danny and human Danny:
Ghost Danny: "And that's the sort of irresponsible attitude that makes you such a disappointment to our family".
Human Danny: Uh.. hello. Not our family. My family. You're the full time superhero, remember?
Keep in mind that they are both part of Danny's personality which means:
1) He thinks he's a "disappointment" to his own family.
2) He sees Phantom, his ghost half, as a different person. He thinks that 'he' doesn't belong to his family. This must come from the fact that his own parents don't know about his ghost identity and thus, Danny doesn't consider Phantom a Fenton until his parents accept him for who he is.
When it comes to be the hero, Danny thinks it's job to protect Amity Park, even though no one asked him to carry the burden of such heavy task.
He sometimes blames himself for things that are out of his control or weren't his fault to begin with. He thinks that its his responsibility to fight evil ghosts from harming any humans.
A few episodes focus on him learning how to use his powers with responsibility and not taking advantage of others. 'Reign Storm' is mainly about him choosing to use his powers to stop the Ghost King instead of using them to get back to people he doesn't like.
Danny:"All of my enemies. Everything I thought I could handle, but couldn't."
Tucker:"Dude, you can't blame yourself for this. It's not your fault."
Danny:"Maybe not. But it is my responsibility."
Tumblr media
Danny really cares about his family and friends. He would do everything he can to protect them from getting hurt. In the episode '13' it was shown that he´s very over protective of her sister Jazz, as there was a ghost who was trying to trick her into falling in love with him.
Aside from learning to overcome his insecurities and becoming more responsible, overtime Danny learns that not every ghosts is completely evil and some of them can be friendly.
A good example of this is when he meets Cujo in 'Shades of Gray' and helps him with finding his toy that he lost when he was alive. In 'Public Enemies' he befriends Wulf, after freeing him from Walker, who was keeping him prisioner.
Tumblr media
It's worth of pointing out that Danny knows there are times to talk and times to fight. At the start of the series he usually prefers using his fists first before asking questions but as he matures, he starts to see when it's better to solve conflicts when fighting is not necessary.
Another flaw he has its that he's a bit short tempered. He often lets he temper get the worst of him, which makes him have arguments with his friends and not think things straight. But,to be fair, his life is a bit difficult: having to fight ghosts at night, getting late for school, being bullied and not knowing how to manage his time must be exhausting for a teenager. It's not suprising he's bit moody in some episodes.
Tumblr media
For my last note i think it's important to talk about talk about his rivalry with Vlad Plasmius as their relationship in the series is quite interesting.
In a way, Vlad exists to remind Danny of everything he shouldn't be. Vlad prefers to use his ghost powers for his personal gain. He cares very little about how his actions affect others. He sees people as their pawns. He usually manipulates them into doing what he wants.
Vlad sometimes likes teasing Danny about how they very alike, and in part, that's a bit true, they are both half ghosts who gained their powers after an lab accident. They are unique, since there are barely more halfas outside them.
Danny has shown to be manipulative when it comes to dealing with him. He knows that Vlad is very emotionally vunerable since he is desperate for Danny to become his ¨son¨. He takes advantage of this to trick Vlad and beat him in his own mind games.
In conclusion: Danny is complex character who grows into a confident superhero overcoming his own insecurities and flaws. He may not be perfect, nevertheless he cares about family and friends and it´s always going to be there to protect Amity Park.

Don’t Go Running Off Into Danger, Even If I Do pt 2
So, I have no clue what a publishing schedule is. So here, have more of this dumb fic at 11 pm. FUCK SLEEP! SLEEP IS FOR THE WEAK!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 2
Danny and Jazz managed to finish just in time to put everything away before their parents got home. He’d actually managed to have a ghost free night. But the peace wasn’t going to last. And this wasn’t about ghosts. He got slammed into his locker.  “Hey look, it’s Fenturd. What’s with the dumb picture of Phantom? You’ll never be on his level,” Dash said and laughter broke out. Danny groaned. At least they didn’t know he was trans. He’d be beaten twice as much if they knew. The locker door closed and locked.  “Seriously Dash? I have to get to class!” He yelled through the metal.  “Whatever Fentina. No one cares! Oh hey, it’s fresh meat!” Dash went away from Danny’s locker. Danny had found out a way to make it so he could open his locker from the inside without it being outerwardly compromised. He jumped out. It was those kids from last night.  “Leave them alone Dash. They haven’t even been here for a day yet. The rules are that newbies get a probation period,” Danny crossed his arms.  “I don’t know Fentoenail. Would you like to take their beating?” Dash mocked him. Danny sighed. He’d have to do this.  “Any day,”
Danny regretted everything. Dash had hit him twice as hard as normal and his locker trick wasn’t working. Everything hurt. He was going to miss Lancer’s class. At least his ghost sense wasn’t going off or something. Lancer wouldn’t miss him. Suddenly, his locker opened and he tumbled out. He yelped. “Are you okay?” The girl twin said.  “No worse than what I’m used to,” Danny brushed himself off.  “You didn’t have to do that,” The boy twin told Danny. “Yeah, I kinda did. The probation period is sacred. Dash knows that,” “Probation period?” The boy said. “A rule we made up last year. If Dash really wants to break it, I take the beating instead. Fenton gets to take the beating so the new kids don’t have to,”  “That’s not fair. You should report him,” “Nah, he threw like four perfect throws last night and is exempt from punishment,”  “Football?” The boy gave Danny a knowing look.  “Danielle- I mean Daniel Fenton to the main office,” The loud speaker said. “Oh come on! At least it was probably just a misread,” Danny was fuming. The beating plus being deadnamed was getting on his nerves. “We have to head there too,” The girl said. Danny shrugged and let them follow him.
Lancer called them all in at once. “Sup Lancer. Can I help you?” Danny leaned against the wall. “Mr Fenton. You and I both know that you need to show me more respect. W-what happened to you?” Lancer looked up from his papers. “Just a certain football star. Nothing I can’t handle. He broke the probation period,” “That’s a rule between students. I have no need to enforce it,” Lancer sighed. “I have no clue why you of all people were chosen for this, but you are too be Mr and Ms Pines guide around the school,” “Jazz not good enough for you? Had to pick the ‘slacker’ Fenton?” “Daniel, mind your tone. Jazz is our top student,”  “We all know I’m destined to fail in life. Can I get their timetables?” “Yes of course. Listen Danny, both you and I know you’re capable of better grades. I don’t understand why you don’t try,” Danny wasn’t in the mood for Lancer’s pep talks.  “I’ve got more important things to worry about,” Danny grabbed the papers and stalked off with the Pines Twins on his heels.  “Why didn’t he do anything about Dash?” the boy asked. “He has no reason to. Not like I’m about to ask,” Danny handed them their timetables. He’d seen that the girl was named Mabel and the boy Mason. “We’ll start with your classes Mason,”  “I prefer Dipper,” “I’m not calling you by a dumb nickname. Let’s go,” Danny growled.
Just as he was about to lead Mason to his first class, a royal pain in his ass showed up. “Daniel! I require your assistance, little badger,” “It’s bound to be another plan to get in my mom’s pants. Go away,”  “Now, don’t be like that. I’m the mayor after all. You should be honored,” “Plasmius, shut your goddamn mouth. I. Don’t. Give. A. Fuck,” Danny said so that only Vlad could hear.  “Well, something’s got you in a tizzy. I’ll ask later. I should tell you though, it’s about Danielle,” “What did you do to Dani?” Fury. Wait, he had to get the kids to class.  “Nothing. It wasn’t me. You should ask your ghost hunter girlfriend,” Vlad grinned. Fucking Valerie.  “Come on kids. You’ve got to get to class,” Danny ignored Plasmius. Valerie was going to die.
At lunch, he purposefully turned into Phantom and waited for Valerie on top of the school. She took no time at all. “What. Did. You. Do. To. Dani,” He glared at her.  “I didn’t do anything to her! You’re going down ghost!” “Am I really?” Danny was pissed. She wasn’t getting any mercy today. He teleported behind her.  “What the... HOW?” “Where is she?!” He growled. “What do you care? She’s always off on her own,”  “Does it look like I care Valerie?!”  “How did you know?!” “I know more than you seem to think. Tell me where Dani is. NOW!” He froze her feet. She looked terrified.  “What’s wrong with you!? Why do you care so much about her? Ghosts don’t have feelings,” Danny lost it at that point. The laughter was dark. Hollow. Horrible. Val’s terror was visible.  “Don’t have feelings? DON’T HAVE FEELINGS? FUCK YOU! I’M SO TIRED OF ALL THIS!” “Phantom, calm down,” Val was terrified. Danny wasn’t done. The rings were threatening to come down and expose him to her.  “So you admit this is real? Would you like to know how it feels to die Val? How it feels to live on the line between life and death? Wait, I can’t do that! You don’t have a deactivated portal in your basement that I can make you turn on while your inside. I don’t have a stupid jumpsuit with your dad’s face on it so I can take off the that sticker. You don’t have parents that threaten to rip you apart molecule by molecule for just exsisting! You don’t have to see a future where you become evil because you cheated on one test and your family all died! Can you even begin to comprehend what I go through? Ever been cloned? And forced to do something incredibly painful so that one clone can get fixed and watch another get lied too? And that’s just the brunt of it Valerie. Keep telling me how I don’t feel. How I’m nothing!” Danny screamed at ice engulfed their feet. Val’s eyes went wide.  “D-Danny?” She said quietly. “Congratulations! You aren’t as niave as the rest of Amity Park! How does it feel?” He’d snapped. “Calm down! I’ll tell you where Dani is!” She shrieked. That hollow laugh came back. But instead of an angry rant afterwards, he just sunk to his knees and screamed. It wasn’t a wail. It was a scream of pain. Of being done with the world.  “I can’t do this anymore,” He sobbed and the rings went down. All that was left now was a beaten, broken Danny Fenton.  “You should change back. I’ll take you to Dani,” Danny nodded and followed her.  “Sorry I broke down. I’m just sick of people telling me that I can’t feel. That all ghosts can’t feel. You don’t even bother talking to us, ya know?” “Ghosts lie,” “And so do people! I’ve talked to the ghosts. Listened to them. Heard their stories. I protect people, but I protect them too!” “How do you know those aren’t just acts?” “Cause they make sense. I’d have the same response if it was me. If my parents burned down the place I was in because I got caught being gay,” “I’m confused,” “Ember. I told her I wouldn’t tell anyone. But you need to know that they all have reasons for being the way they are. Skulker’s family was hunted, so now he hunts to prove his strength,” “Maybe we should talk to you more,”  “Maybe you should. No one asks to die,” “But your parents say that ghosts don’t remember their lives. They’re the leading experts,”  “That’s like putting a ten year old in a room of babies. They’re the expert by default in that situation, but an adult would be the expert the moment they walked in,” “Why don’t we know about that,” “Dying is traumatizing. Even half dying is traumatizing. It’s taboo to mention it unless you’re told. No one explains it until they’re ready. And talking about a life before that is almost wrong,” “How did you learn?” “Skulker told me during the Christmas Truce. Ember told me one day when she just wanted to be left alone, but I did too. I guess things end up working out in weird ways,” “The Christmas Truce?” “On Christmas Eve and Christmas, ghosts have a truce. No one is allowed to fight anyone that day. The Ghost Writer broke the truce and Walker got to haul him off in just means,” “We really know nothing about ghosts, do we?” “No, you don’t. They even have a party. I got invited last year. Skulker let me make the star! It took me weeks to get it right,” Danny smiled at the memory. He’d made a scale model of a blue giant that went through it’s life stages.  “So there’s a whole society?” “A government. Systems. Main rules. Taboos. Just cause we’re ghosts, doesn’t mean we don’t have a system,” “I’m sorry,” “What?” Danny nearly froze. “I’m sorry that I made so many assumptions. I never should’ve chased you or any ghost like that,” “Keep them out of Amity Park and send them back to the Zone. Most ghosts forget that living is dangerous, so they just rampage. I keep trying to talk sense into them, but they’re pretty stubborn,”  “What about the dog?” “Dog? You mean Cujo? I was trying to stop him from trashing Axiom. He was trying to get a toy. I’m sorry that recked your life Val,” “My life? Wrecked? When compared to you, my life is a dream. It’s not like I died,” “I guess you’ve got a point,”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks for reading. I just like fics where Val finds out, and this one seemed like an okay place to stick it. Dani is fine. I’ll fill you in on that next chapter, but I should get some sleep.

A new Family

Chapter 10
Summary:  Bruce drags Daniel away while the kids talk; enter Cujo.
Bruce grabs his boyfriends’ bags; Daniel rolls his eyes, “Need I remind you, I can handle myself.”  The ravenette locks eyes with the brunette, both smiling at each other.  “So, when did you take them in,” the question wasn’t a surprise.  “Close to a month ago, Jazz is entering a criminal psychology course next week; the twins are being home-schooled.”  Bruce hums, “You think the grades are because of the ghost attacks?”
Daniel shakes his head, “Not likely; while in Amity the first time, the school day went as usual.”  Bruce frowns, “Do you think,” Daniel nods, then glances to his surrogate son, “He feels responsible because of it; his folks never noticed the clues.”  Both watch as the boys drag Danny away from the girls; Daniel chuckles.  “I hope to god Jason doesn’t corrupt him,” Bruce smiles, leaning against the taller man's shoulder.
Daniel follows Bruce up the stairs to the main bedroom; both lay on the bed.  Silence fills the air; Bruce looks to Daniel, “Is that scar new?”  Daniel hums, rubbing the area, “Yeah, but I didn’t get it in a fight, believe it or not.”  Bruce turns onto his side; Daniel mirrors the action, “I’ll be the judge of that.”  Daniel smiles, “So, I’m jogging before a meeting, right?
This car speeds past me, obviously late to work or something; the back left tire kicks up many pebbles.  They hit my face, and the car doesn’t stop; the worst part, I didn’t feel it until I got home.”  Bruce gives him a blank look, then shakes his head, “How is it when I visit you, rouges follow the Batman, but you visit me, nothing happens?”  Daniel smirks, “Well, I’m pretty sure Croc still remembers the time I used Hammers’ revamped adaptiod to beat his ass.”
A loud rumbling growl shakes the room; Bruce stares as Daniel pales, “No, from Amity?”  Daniel bolts up; Bruce follows him, “Daniel, what is it?”  He bumps the back of Daniel; bright green fills his eyes.  A sizeable green mastiff is standing in the foyer; the kids keep Alfred out of harm's way.  The twins, Danny and Ellie, try to calm him down; Titus growls back.
“CUJO,” the mastiff blinks, looking to see Daniel; the man has his arms crossed.  Cujo whines, shrinking in size; Daniel walks down.  Cujo is now the size of an eight to ten-week-old Mastiff puppy; his collar has the signature DP.  “Bad ghost dog, Alfred worked hard for this house to be clean before our arrival.  Now go apologize to Mister Pennyworth, or it’s Batcave for you.”
The ghost whines, floating to Alfred, protected by Jason and Tim; Alfred sighs.  “I must admit, that might have been scarier than learning Master Bruce is the Batman.”  He kneels, resting his hand on Cujo, “If you promise not to cause more trouble, you can stay while Master Daniel visits.  After all, you do seem to like the boy, Danny.”  Alfred shoos Cujo, who flies to Danny, licking his face, “Okay, I guess you’re forgiven.”
The kids run outside with the dogs; Daniel sighs, “How do you do it, Bruce?”  Said man smiles, kissing the other man on his cheek, “Being the Batman helped me with disciplining all of them.  You’ll get used to it, trust me.”  Daniel turns to Bruce, then looks at the clock, “Two hours to dinner, you wanna,” Alfred coughs.  “Might I suggest not doing such a thing before dinner? I’ve only made so much.”
Two hours later, Cujo is nuzzling under Titus as the Wayne and Romanova families eat, the boys sitting across from the girls.  Jazzs’ hair is in a french braid, while Ellies’ hair is in pigtails.  Dannys’ hair is shorter; no doubt the boys shaved his hair, “Nice hair, Danny.  Did Alfred know you’re going to use his razor?”  Ellie earns a raspberry in response; Cujo growls.
Daniel and Bruce make eye contact just as the familiar blue mist exits Danny’s mouth.  “Beware!  I am the Box Ghost,” the twins groan; Danny stands up, pointing to the Box Ghost.  “Either leave now, or you stay in the thermos for half a month!”  The kids and Box Ghost blink, “I will take my leave by exiting the perpendicular shaped panes of glass.”
The ghost turns intangible, flying through the window.  Danny turns to Cujo, still growling at the window, "Cujo, no."  The puppy lays back down, Titus lifts his head.  "Danny, go work," Danny smiles at the older man.  Everyone continues eating; Bruce grabs his plate, moving to Daniel.
The kids head off to bed; Danny stops Daniel; Bruce glances back.  "I just have this feeling; what if Boxy tells the entire Zone that I'm with you?"  Daniel rests his hand on Danny's shoulder, "Technus called you Phantom in front of your class and parents, you'll be fine."  Danny sighs, leaning against the older man, "I know, but what about Plasmius?"  Bruce narrows his eyes, assuming that Plasmius is the primary foe Phantom faces.
After years of spending time with the man, Bruce can read Daniel like a book.  The slight stiffness in his shoulders, him scraping his peeling skin.  Bruce walks over, wrapping an arm around Daniel, “Danny, you’re currently in one of the safest houses ever; not even Lobo can enter.”  Danny chuckles, both not the self-conscious tone; then it hits them, Lobo isn’t a ghost.  “If it’s ghosts you’re worried about, I’m sure Constantine or Zatanna have a spell that can help.”
Batcave  21:15
Batman is sitting at the computer, looking over reports; a familiar arms rest against the back.  “Any heist by Penguin lately, I’m sure he’ll be happy to see me.”  Timberwolf earns a grunt, but it doesn’t bother him now, not like it had the first time.  Both watch the screen as Batman types on the keyboard, then the screen flashes; it’s Joker.  “I know he’ll be delighted to see me again,” both head toward the batmobile.

-.-.-.-
Danny was quickly writing down on his journal every single little thing that could be helpful to deal more efficiently with his workload, had been rather busy lately, and normally he would just wing it and be done with it, but this time there were some things he had to take into consideration before he started to poke bears with sticks.
One of the most important?
When you are dealing with ghosts, you have to take into account that they have a thing called obsession.
It’s their drive. The reason behind their actions and continual existence upon this world, and as such, a good way to guess what makes them tick.
Danny liked to pretend he was not a slave of a fucking obsession, but considering he was still fighting the ghosts, with no payment to speak of, and after the massive amount of times someone had used his face to scrub the streets-
The fake it ‘till you make it ideology only carried you so far in life.
His friends called it a hero-type obsession.
Danny didn’t think that fit quite right.
When he couldn’t turn a blind eye on one of his, particularly reckless, actions he preferred to describe it as a protection streak.
Obsessions were ‘born’ the moment of one’s death, after all.
And there had been nothing heroic in the way he had died.
He had been scared shitless.
The moment it had clicked in his head that he would most definitely die right there, all the reasons why he didn’t want to die yet flashed by his mind, all those places left to visit, his dreams of going to space, going out with his friends, his family- My god, Jazz …
He would leave his sister behind.
He was leaving her alone in this godforsaken house with their parents.
Even after all the years the Fenton siblings spent calling living in the Fenton household ‘survival’ they had only been playing around. It was supposed to be just a joke. Something to lighten and make fun of their weird family dynamic.
It wasn’t supposed to escalate like this.
And now- n-now their parents had demonstrated that they were apparently more than capable of killing off — if accidentally — one of their children, what the fuck would prevent them from murdering the other one?
Who was going to protect his sister?
The fear for his well being had rapidly transformed into dread for his sister’s future. A tremendous and sudden rush of protectiveness had inundated his being.
And that was it for him.
The next time he had recovered some semblance of coherence he had awakened as a fully minted halfa and there was no going back.
Some months later, after learning more about his situation and what it meant, he had been capable of identifying what was the drive behind his ghost half. Jazz had been the catalyst, but apparently the sheer feeling of protectiveness had been what his soul had latched onto. So while his sister was a big priority, he recognized that he still felt somewhat inclined to protect in general.
He still refused to call it an obsession, though.
So Protection Urges it was.
Apart from keeping a constant watch on their house —for both their sake’s, truly—, when the ghosts started running wild all over the place his new ghost instincts had come to the conclusion that a safe town meant a safe sister — and a happy sister. Jazz would blow a fuse worrying about getting lynched by the town when they realized the older Fentons were at fault of the destruction of their homes. And he would worry about his sister getting skewered. An intervention was in order —, so, most of the time this protection was reserved for the humans, considering the weak things tended to get trapped in the crossfire between the ghosts and their obsession or even other ghosts.
There were also moments when humans would turn against other humans. But in a place like Amity — where the citizens felt a certain level of kinship against the ghostly invaders and tended to stick together — those tended to be scarce and far between.
The occasions where his protection streak would show up in favor of ghosts weren’t as numerous, but they existed. They tended to be either when the G.I.W. got their imbecility involved, his parents were hell-bent on getting subjects for dissection or when other fucking ghosts insisted on being fucking assholes.
After all the time he spent dealing with ghosts it was undeniable there were good ghosts out there, and no matter the reason, when he helped these ghosts out most of them tended to be openly grateful. Some promised him their allegiance, others gave him their respect, and a good bunch of them would find subtle ways to stay under his protection.
Once the almost disaster that had been Pariah Dark was over, some of the ghosts had started to actively request  his protection.
Some of the most aggressive ghosts had started to back down, shit, even Walker was not bitching at him as much as he used to these days. He would think he was going soft, but he still looked at him like something the dog had dragged in — which, ok, that was true sometimes because Wulf, or even Cujo, but there was no need to be rude —, Danny didn’t really mind, Walker wasn’t his favorite person either.
So things were a little better for him when he visited the Ghost Zone, and he could make things somewhat better for the weaker ghosts that relied on him for protection. As far as Danny was concerned he was doing fine in his protection duties. Fast forward a pair of months and the Ghost Writer was kind enough to inform him that while he was doing an excellent job with the fighting aspect, he sucked in all the others.
Apparently, when a ghost asked for the protection of another ghost they were requesting a lot more than just a ‘fight for me’. — And how the fuck was he supposed to even know that? — This, of course, also meant that they were willing to offer a lot more in exchange. But Danny wasn’t as focused on what he could get in return as in the fact that he was apparently lacking on his role as protector.
Not on his goddamn watch.
Damn his fucking urges.
Later on, with more time and experience to sort through this wreck waiting to happen and after he finally got the chance to met more of the sovereigns of the Infinity Realms and personally witness their interactions with their people, he would start to understand what exactly this new role he had stumbled upon meant.
For the moment the only thing he deemed as the first priority was supplying the ghosts under his care with a safe space to exist.
According to the Ghost Writer, giving them a safe space would normally translate into welcoming them into his lair, because the weaker ghosts that normally requested protection didn’t have the proper energy levels to make one of their own.
The problem with that was that he didn’t have a lair.
…Not necessarily.
GW hypothesized that, as he was so attached to his hometown and spend the most part of his time in there, it was likely that his ghost half recognized the entirety of Amity Park as his lair, and as such his instincts hadn’t seen the construction of one for his own use in the Zone as necessary. Or something along those lines.
That had been a bump on the road for his plans.
Nonetheless, a Fenton does not know when to fucking stop, so he kept at it.
When he nagged clockwork about it the older — or younger, whatever he was at the time — ghost had said that winning a fight against a ghost king meant inheriting their lair by right of conquest. So technically speaking, Danny did have a lair now, no matter how creepy the thing was.
That was all good and dandy but didn’t quite resolve the main problem.
Because now the problem was that Pariah’s goddamned keep — now Phantom’s —,   was ‘guarding’ one sleeping murderous king, and two fucking powerful artifacts. And opening the doors to what amounted to a small army of random ghosts while those things were there was not a good idea.
But, seeing as Danny was not about to expose ghosts or humans to each other, there was no way he was letting his ‘people’ into Amity, so the castle it was.
Considering the significance the crown, ring, and even fucking Pariah held for the zone, the Observants would have to get involved for decision making, because of course, they had to shove their nonexistent noses on everything.
As anyone would have predicted, it was a goddamn pain to reach some kind of agreement when such uptight guys were involved. The halfa acknowledged that finding a place to these things was important but after two hours of debating back and forth over it, the situation was getting ridiculous.
Danny, being pretty annoyed already, had asked if they could just melt the damn things and be done with it.
The Observants nearly had a coronary.
Clockwork would have succeeded in looking chastising if he hadn’t been so busy trying to hide the smirk blooming in his face from witnessing the eyeballs’ ruffled distress.
They explained to him exactly why doing something like that was completely foolish, Phantom retorted that leaving two ancient artifacts of immeasurable power, and a psychotic slumbering ex-king in a creepy castle guarded by fear factor alone was fucking foolish.
The Observants countered saying that if the new high king would just fucking accept his position and wear them then they wouldn’t have to worry about the artifacts. Phantom disagreed in principle because the new high king would have to be as imbecile as the last one to let himself get possessed by a fucking ring.
The halfa dutifully ignored most of the implications thrown in that particular conversation.
Happiness belongs to the ignorant.
In the end, they had all acquiesced
A good thing, because Danny had been more than prepared to throw the tantrum of the century if any of them tried to get that goddamned cursed ring anywhere near his fingers, and there was no fucking way he was going to parade around wearing a fucking crown on fire — or otherwise—, he had an ice core for ancients’ sakes.
In the middle of the ghost-catfight, Danny had stated that he would only agree to use the damn artifacts as long as they found a way to get rid of the goddamn curse of the ring and make the gaudy crown less of a fire hazard.
The Observant sniffed pompously, saying that the notion of them not knowing how to do such a simple thing was ridiculous, Danny’s eye twitched as he sneered, because ‘Why the fuck haven’t you done it already then?’
The Observants shifted nervously. Danny sneered harder. Clockwork stopped trying to pretend he was not enjoying himself.
One of the Observants finally disclosed that the issue was not the knowledge but the power needed to pull off such a thing. With newer things, transferring powers from a thing to another was relatively easy. With millennia-old artifacts with such amount of power inside, though? Near impossible. Not even taking into account that the artifacts Danny wanted to ‘mess with’ were — however cursed  — an ancient heritage of the Infinity Realms.
“Then we ask for help.” Phantom said curtly, crossing his arms over his chest.
This declaration resulted in a row of rapid blinking among the Observants. It was fucking weird to watch.
“Ask who for help, exactly?” Came the uneasy reply.
“Isn’t it obvious?” he drawled, pushing his hand through his already messy white hair and massaging his aching temple while he was at it.
“I think what Daniel is trying to say is,” Intervened ClockWork after letting Phantom loose on the Observants as long as he could get away with. The boy was a real wonder. “If we need power and permission to ‘ mess with the ancient heritage ’ then the better option would be to consult with the Kings and Queens of the Infinity Realms. Wouldn’t you agree?” the ghost of time finished sending a playful little smile to the ruffled Observants.
At the end of the day, all this chit chat resulted in the official formation of the High Council of the Infinity Realms.
For Danny, the best thing about this Council was that most of them, like him, had a bone to pick with the Observants.
Which didn’t mean that they agreed with him on everything he put forward, but it still makes him quite satisfied, all things considered.
Once established the first order of business had been, of course, dealing with the artifacts and Pariah.
Phantom suggested from the get-go stashing pariah into a more discreet, less flashy location than his previous castle, and transferring the powers of the ring and crown into new non-cursed-or-flaming-and-better-named jewelry.
These things had been a trademark of the ruthlessness of Pariah’s reign, after all.
Taking into account that all of the ghosts sovereigns had either been present for Pariah’s carnage or were more than aware of the repercussions it caused, it was not much of a surprise when it was an almost unanimous vote in favor of the notion. It would have to be discussed further to decide on the precise details, but for the most part that was the general sentiment.
The Observants had seethed for a while, but they couldn’t do more than resign themselves after the majority of the votes cast were in favor of a complete change.
They had still insisted on keeping a goddamn crown as mandatory, and he could have kept going with his bitching but Jazz had been trying to teach him how to pick his battles, and this one was not worth more of a sore throat.
All of this hassle because he wanted to give some homeless ghosts safe heaven into his previously non-existent lair.
Once done, with the artifacts and Pariah taken out of the keep, he realized some redecoration was in order before anyone lived in this place. He thought about asking ClockWork but decided to let him deal with the Council Shenanigans and went to bother the Ghost Writer instead.
The dude sure had some strong opinions on color schemes and furniture.
Danny shook himself out of his daydreaming, he had gotten carried away.
He put his pen down, taking advantage of the little break in writing to stretch his cramped limbs and back like a cat before looking over his chicken scrawl spread all over the journal’s pages.
If he dealt his cards well a single chat with the High Council and a visit to the castle would be more than enough to start the preparations.
Danny’s eyes zeroed in the last column of names he had written on the page.
That only left the more- mmh, particular cases.
He let his chin rest on the palm of his hand, releasing a low hum while a little smirk slowly made itself comfy on his features.
Now, for the fun part.
-.-.-.-
NOTES:
You might be wondering, “Did she just made Jazz the root of Danny’s obsession?” And the answer is yes. Yes, I did. -.-.-.-
Frostbite’s name in the Latin American (Or is it from Spain? Don’t know :v )dub is “Congelación” (which means ‘freezing’) and I don’t know how to fucking deal with that. It does not sound anywhere as cool as the original :’v
Maybe it’s because I’m not used to hearing “congelación” applied to something as awesome as a goddamn ghost yeti.
Or maybe not.
Who knows. -.-.-.-
I swear I’m trying to get these two to Gotham, but It feels like I’m dragging Danny there kicking and screaming. Which is- appropriate, I suppose. -.-.-.-
There would be more details of the High Council integrants later (I think?) and the dynamic I’m going to put here, not like you can’t guess some of them already *wink wink nudge nudge*

askmeanjudge replied to your post “Imagine Randy having to explain to Danny and Jake how he is going to...”
Ah man, no. I just like to hear your ideas. Not musing. XD
Well, perhaps not something to muse on on your part, but it can be on mine. *grins*
I don’t think Randy would tell them any time soon. He’s not the sort of person to throw something like that out there and ruin a good mood. Sometimes, he’d genuinely forget about it, just because he’s having so much fun.
But then his final year would approach, and suddenly the end of all of this would feel like it’s looming. He’d know he has to say something, but he’s not sure how, or when.
There are mere months left by the time the others notice that Randy hasn’t shaken this mood and confront him about it. Something must be up, despite discretely checking with Howard and confirming that nothing major has changed for Randy at either school or home. And these guys are his friends, so Randy doesn’t want to lie; he’s spent too much of these past few years lying to people, just to keep his secret about being the Ninja, and this is one they’d find out soon enough, anyway.
Besides. He has to tell them. They need to know that one day soon he won’t be there for them.
Neither Danny nor Jake are strangers to the ideas of a mind wipe. They’ve both seen it done. They know the consequences. Danny used it to his advantage, keeping his secret and having more time to figure out a better way to tell his parents--and the other people he chooses to tell, as opposed to just being exposed. But Jake? This was how Jake lost Rose.
Jake knows exactly what it’s like to look an old friend in the face and have them not know you at all. Not remember any of the things you’ve done together. Because it’s somehow deemed better for them not to know all that, to remember living an edited version of the truth instead and carrying on as if it’s always been that way--since, as far as they know, it has been.
Rose had to forget everything for her own safety, too. And for theirs, in case retaining her memories came at a cost. (Rewriting time and reality is tricky business, and they’ve all dabbled far too much in that.)
But Jake never gave up on her, and that paid off. She remembered, and the world didn’t end. She helped them prevent something really bad, and the Huntsclan didn’t return. Things got a lot better for both of them.
Really, can he be blamed for not believing that Randy--and everyone else--will be better if Randy just forgets everything?
He’s the one to make the rash promise that he won’t let that happen, that he won’t let Randy be mind-wiped and have everything lost. And then he heads home, because he needs to talk to Fu and Gramps and their contacts in the magical community, because there has to be something that can be done. Trixie and Spud avoiding being mind-wiped, and no one went back and demanded Jake do that to them even after it became painfully clear that they still knew everything, and no one’s questioned Rose’s knowledge, either. And if the dragons are okay with this, some old book should be.
Maybe Fu knows of a loophole, too. He’s good with those. Would just making Randy not be able to talk about being the Ninja outside of the presence of certain people be enough?
After Jake’s gone, Danny clears his throat rather awkwardly. “I’m sorry,” he says, because he doesn’t know what else to say. He knows better than to wish things were different when he doesn’t have Desiree in a thermos.
And he knows that sometimes, you have to let people go.
He’s sure Dani will turn up some day, but he doesn’t know when. She hasn’t written or called or emailed or sent letters via Cujo or anything. But he also knows that telling too many people about her, about who and frankly what she really is, will just make things so much harder. She’s better off if people don’t know. If they just think she’s his cousin.
And with Randy, well.... Danny isn’t happy about this, but he doesn’t know how to change it. Even if he went into the Nomicon, what would arguing for Randy’s sake do? Would First Ninja even listen to him? The idea of compiling the knowledge of the previous Ninjas makes sense, and it’s helped Randy. He’s used that resource. If he has to move on, it kinda is selfish to refuse to give back and add to that resource. And it might be dangerous, if Randy knows something that could prevent a future Ninja from making a deadly mistake.
Danny’s not great at arguing logistics or anything like that. He relies on Jazz and Sam and, to a lesser extent, Tucker. And he knows Randy’s situation is different from his and Jake’s--not just in how he got his powers but in what he protects. Jake is supposed to protect all of the United States, and feasibly, any magical creature within them can call on him for aid. Danny’s taken on the role of protector of Amity Park, but most of the ghosts don’t bother him nearly as much as he used to, and his parents will still be there even if he and Valerie move on. He’s not tied there.
But the Ninja is meant to protect Norrisville. Technically, he’s meant to protect Norrisville alone. But isn’t that only because the Sorcerer used to be trapped there? With him gone, doesn’t that mean the rules have changed? Doesn’t it mean the rules could be changed?
It’s a hope that Danny clings to, but he doesn’t want to say anything yet. He doesn’t want to promise Randy that he can fix this if he can’t. He needs to look into this. If no one else, Clockwork will know. He might not tell, but he’d know, and Danny can get enough of an answer in the way that Clockwork dodges his question--or if he even decides to be around to allow Danny to ask it. (For all that he claims that he can’t interfere, he’s painfully transparent, and Danny suspects that’s deliberate. A way to get around the Observants who try to constrain Clockwork when he’s not meant to be constrained.)
“We’ll figure something out,” Danny says instead, not even sure what Randy had mumbled before. That’s the safest answer he has to all this at the moment. They might not be able to figure out a solution. They might not be able to stop this. But they can try, and they can make plans to reintroduce themselves to Randy if they have to. Or try to make him remember--photographic evidence and video and all that--or just rebuild their friendship from scratch if they have to. It’s worth trying, even if it doesn’t work.
Besides, being the Ninja isn’t Randy’s entire identity. He’ll still have the heart of a hero even without the mask, If it has to be an end, that doesn’t mean it can’t also be a new beginning.

Chapter 3: Two of a Kind
Danny stretched out, releasing a huge yawn, then bonelessly flopped back onto the roof he was lying on. Staring unseeingly up at the sky, he contemplated how he’d gotten here. Man, he really should’ve realized sooner that this wasn’t his Amity Park. Maybe if he had, he could’ve gone back through the Portal.
Despite his bluster towards Jazz—this Jazz—he really was concerned about how things were, back home. He was sure that Valerie could handle the ghosts, especially if Dani dropped by, but he hadn’t seen his cousin in forever. And Sam, Tucker, and Jazz might’ve been pretty good ghost hunters, perfectly capable of helping Val, but…
But they would be far too busy looking for him to be any help.
There was nothing he could do about it, though. He knew how rare natural portals were, and how unpredictable. It was nigh impossible for him to find his way back on his own, and convincing Frostbite to give him the Infi-map would be… well, pretty difficult, he supposed. He didn’t have any “Conqueror of Pariah Dark” titles to show off, not here.
What he’d told had been the truth, to some extent. If he was stuck here, he might as well make himself useful. Give her the guidance she would need; the guidance he wished he’d had, when he first started.
Of course he’d forgotten about all the potential downtime. Jazz had school, and even if Danny took care of most of the minor ghosts, that still left… a surprising amount of time. With how busy his life felt, he really would’ve guessed that ghost-hunting took up more time than it did.
Maybe the downtime just felt really long. It wasn’t like there was much he could do, after all. He couldn’t go anywhere in human form, because people might confuse him for this universe’s Danny Fenton. And he couldn’t go anywhere as a ghost, because people weren’t familiar with those. Not yet, at least.
That, and even if they were, it would probably involve his parents hunting him. And, uh, he wasn’t exactly jumping with excitement to get back to that. Hell, he hadn’t even gotten his real parents to quit hunting him.
His core stirred to life, and cold air wisped out of his mouth.
“Well, here we go again,” he grumbled to himself, pushing himself off of the ground. He glanced over at FentonWorks, but Jazz didn’t stir. Wherever the ghost was, it was outside her range. Well, whatever. He could handle it on his own.
He would almost be tempted to let it run a little loose, just to stifle the boredom, but it was too risky. That, and he and Jazz were trying to keep the existence of ghosts a secret for as long as possible. Letting some random animalistic ghost run wild wasn’t good for public morale.
A glint of light in the distance caught his attention, and he zoned in on it immediately. Metal, maybe? Not a lot of ghosts brought ectoplasmic metal with them, and surely it was too early for Cujo…
The connections clicked in Danny’s mind, and he hesitated. Skulker, of course. Maybe he should get Jazz. Skulker tended to be a pretty tough fight, always upgrading his gear.
But, oh.
Skulker upgraded his gear, from the moment they first fought. This Skulker wouldn’t have any of those upgrades. He would be 2.5 years behind the curve; he’d be a wimp compared to the Skulker Danny usually fought.
Danny tapped into his invisibility, then started a large arc, only vaguely in Skulker’s direction. He was pretty sure the ghost was employed by Vlad right now, assuming that the other half-ghost was Vlad in this universe. But Vlad wouldn’t know about Jazz—or Specter—just yet. Skulker was just following rumors, hoping to snatch a half-ghost as prey before his employer could find out. Danny just needed to show him how hopelessly outmatched he was, and make sure Skulker wouldn’t tell Vlad.
The hulking metallic ghost was crouched on a rooftop, his mohawk flickering in the wind. Danny hovered behind him, dropping his invisibility, but the hunter didn’t even notice him. Ha! Too focused on Jazz, it seemed.
Danny cleared his throat.
Skulker whipped around, the panels on one arm shifting to reveal an ecto-gun. Danny eyed the gun aimed at his chest with half-lidded eyes. He’d seen more impressive weaponry wielded by literal high-schoolers. And that wasn’t even counting Valerie or the members of Team Phantom.
“Sup,” he said instead, nodding at Skulker. “Having fun?”
The ghost seemed thrown off by Danny’s casual attitude, his gun faltering slightly and his brows drawing together. “Um. Yes?”
“Well, see, I don’t appreciate that much.” He crossed his arms, maintaining his hover so he was taller than Skulker. “She’s under my protection, you see.”
Skulker snorted dismissively. More panels opened up to reveal weaponry. Weak, outdated weaponry. That’s right! This Skulker hadn’t even upgraded his basic body with Tucker’s PDA yet. Oh, what a joke!
“Yeah?” the ghost challenged. The gun came back up, aimed at Danny’s chest—his core. “And what are you going to do about it, whelp?”
“See, I was hoping you would ask that.” Danny smirked at Skulker, releasing the tight grasp he’d had on his core. Volatile ectoplasm, as green as his eyes, started curling around his hands. Gathered in thick glowing balls of pure energy in his palms. His glow flickered brighter as more and more energy released from his core.
Maybe this was a little overkill, all things considered. But Skulker had been a pain in his ass plenty of times. Besides, better to release some of that pent-up energy on a target like Skulker, who could take it a lot more easily than the animal ghosts Danny usually fought.
“Oh, I see.” Skulker’s eyes narrowed as energy started building in his ecto-weaponry. “It’s a fight you want.”
Meeting Skulker’s eye, Danny grinned even wider. “What I really want is for you to leave this city alone, and refrain from telling your employer about the existence of another half-ghost, but sure, for now I’ll settle for a fight.”
Finishing his sentence, he formed a reflective shield in front of him, intercepting Skulker’s shot the moment it was fired. The ghost thus momentarily disarmed, Danny flung the ecto-glass at him.
Skulker spluttered, swatting the shattering glass away, and was thus distracted enough for Danny to grab onto him. His white gloves dug for purchase, before one hand closed around the strap of his shirt, and the other caught onto the edge of his pauldron. Eh, good enough.
Satisfied that he had a decent enough grip, Danny shot up into the sky, Skulker dragged along. The ghost struggled underneath his hands, but couldn’t get enough leverage to get free. Not until they reached a satisfactory level of height, and Danny let go of the ghost entirely.
“Whelp!” the ghost barked at him, jet-pack wings unfolding from the panels on his back. “What do you think you are doing?!”
“Getting you out of the public eye.” Danny shifted, new energy forming in his palms as easily as breathing. “Amity doesn’t know about ghosts yet, and I don’t want their first impression to be this ass-kicking.”
“You expect me to be fear you, just because of that little shield?” Skulker laughed, sharp and metallic, before raising his gun again. “Ha! As if.”
“Nah. But I’ve fought ghosts far stronger than you, man.” Danny raised one hand as well, focusing his energy into the single ecto-blast. “And certainly scarier, too.”
He fired. Skulker, unable to respond so quickly, took the blast straight on the arm. The gun was blown off entirely, the metal on Skulker’s arm blackened and smoking.
Before Skulker could pull out another gun, Danny followed it up with a few more shots for emphasis. Blew off the remaining guns, then froze up most of the wings holding Skulker up for good measure.
The ghost faltered in mid-air, his engines cutting out for a short moment. He glanced at his wings, then at Danny, who had barely even moved.
“I… see.” His voice was low, and he was clearly unhappy to be so clearly outmatched. “What… did you say you wanted, again?”
Danny snorted. “Convinced already? You didn’t even make me show off any of the really impressive stuff.”
He shrugged, ignoring the way Skulker’s eyes widened in surprise. “I want you to leave this city alone, and all of its citizens. If you must, you can come hunt ghosts here, but only after checking in with me, and if I agree with your prey. And you can’t tell your employer about the half-ghost you were hunting.”
Skulker remained silent for a moment, eyeing up Danny. Finally, he grunted, “You know of my employer?”
“Some,” Danny said dismissively. “I want to keep this city safe. And I’ve got the stinking feeling that if they knew about the existence of this half-ghost, trouble would come.”
“A fair assessment.” The metallic ghost thought it over for moment longer, angling his head. “And what if I do not follow these rules?”
“Besides the fact that I can clearly kick your ass in a fight?” Danny raised a challenging brow. “I can destroy your reputation in the Ghost Zone just as easily. You’re the greatest hunter around, sure, until everyone knows you’re barely more than a blob ghost. Small, soft-shelled ghost that needs a robot suit to hunt? Not exactly a huge threat.”
“I—” Skulker blew out a noisy breath—somewhat surprising to Danny, since he hadn’t realized Skulker could even do that—and shook his head. “How do you even know that? Fine, whelp. I will leave, and if I ever chase prey into this upside-down world, I will inform you of my presence. Good enough?”
“And you won’t tell your employer?” Danny pressed. “Or anybody else, really. Nobody who doesn’t already know.”
“Yes, sure, fine,” Skulker snapped back. “Her existence will remain a secret, or at the very least, I will have no role in revealing it.”
“Good enough.” Danny released the gathering energy, softening the glow of his body, and stuck out an arm in Skulker’s direction. “Pleasure doing business with you, Skulker.”
“Wish I could say the same,” the ghost grumbled, but he took Danny’s hand and shook it nonetheless. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go.”
“Sure, sure, of course.” Danny waved his hands at Skulker. “Go have fun upgrading your suit. But don’t break our deal, or I will know, and you will regret it. Gotcha?”
“Yes, I understood your threat already.” Skulker shook his head, flying off in the direction of FentonWorks—and the Portal. Danny watched him leave, then shrugged to himself, tapped into his invisibility, and followed Skulker.
You know, just to be safe.
---
“I feel like this is going to be come very confusing, very quickly,” Jazz admitted as she landed in the open space in the woods. Danny—alternative universe Danny—was already there, in his ghost form.
“Huh?” He blinked, clearly confused, and stuffed a phone into one of the pockets on his belt. “What do you mean? What’ll get confusing?”
“Just— this!” She threw out her hands for emphasis, trying to gesture at, well, everything. “I really appreciate your help, but, y’know. You’re Danny, but not my Danny, but that sounds so rude!”
He blinked at her once more, then snorted loudly. “Yeah, no, I get it. I’m having the same with… well, basically everything. Jazz, and your parents, and everything else. You can call me Phantom if it helps, though.”
“I don’t know…” She grimaced, shifting her feet uneasily. “That just feels… rude, I guess? It’s basically your last name, isn’t it? Phantom?”
“It’s my ghost name. Sam and Tucker use it all the time as well, when I’m in my ghost form.” He floated a little closer, then shrugged almost dismissively. “Plus, you’ll have to get used to it anyway. When we start making our public appearances, we’ll have to call each other Specter and Phantom anyway.”
Right. She supposed he had a point there. “I guess so. Will you start calling me Specter, then?”
“If you want me to.” Danny landed as well, his boots touching down on the grassy soil. “I don’t mind either way. I’ve gotten used to switching between that kinda stuff really quickly, with Red and all that.”
“Uh huh…” There was the mysterious ‘Red’ again. “Speaking of this mysterious Red, you mind telling me a little something about them? And Danielle, as well, since you apparently trust those two to help keep your Amity safe? Could they help here, too?”
He made a face. Guess not. “Eh, I don’t know, Jazz. Not now, that’s for sure. It would be better to focus on training your own powers for now, and I’ll keep an eye on those two just in case. Okay?”
“Sure, sounds good.” She shrugged, but made sure to remember that. Whoever they were, they must’ve gotten into the ghost hunting business after Danny. Strange, though. Were they half-ghosts as well, or regular ghost hunters? Maybe one of each? Red could be a ghost name, since most ghost hunters seemed content with using their own. Danielle… Ignoring the close resemblance to Danny’s name, she could be a regular ghost hunter.
But, if Danny wasn’t interested in following up on their existence, she was willing to drop it as well. For now. Her own powers still needed plenty of work, although she’d be perfectly happy just to get these few under control.
“How about we start with some basic control?” Danny asked, suddenly, snapping her out of thoughts. “I remember that that was one of the things I struggled with most, after the accident.”
“Yeah, uh.” She laughed, a little embarrassed. “That would be nice.”
“Thought as much. Do you have any preferences?”
Reliable flight was nice, of course, for travel. Invisibility was mostly annoying when it activated when she didn’t want to; she couldn’t think of any situations where she might normally use it. Most problematic of all, though…
“Intangibility, for sure.” It was not only the most annoying, it also activated most of the three basic powers, and it could be really tough to cover for. “I’m so done with dropping things.”
This startled a laugh out of Danny. He lifted off of the ground again, floating in closer. “Oh, yeah, I know your struggles. Have you gotten in trouble with school yet, for dropping so much glassware?”
“No?” She frowned, mentally prodding her core a little. Were warm-ups a thing for ghost cores? Did shifting into ghost form count as warming it up? “I try not to handle the glassware too much, just in case. Why, is that a thing I need to be cautious of?”
“Nah, sounds like you’ve got it handled already.” He flapped a dismissive hand. “I dropped so much glass during my first month that the school banned me from handling it anymore, but it sounds like you were smarter about it. Still, intangibility first?”
“Uh. Yeah, please.” She clenched and unclenched her fists a little, unsure of how to proceed. “And, um. Dan— Phantom. Do we need to do some kind of… warming up, or something?”
“What, like when you’re going sporting?” He frowned, then dropped the face and shrugged. “Not really? Using your powers is easier while in ghost form, but your core is active all the time. You don’t need to warm-up your brain when you’re gonna start thinking, right? It’s always doing its thing.”
“But aren’t powers more like muscles? Aren’t we training them?”
Almost immediately, he shook his head. “Nah. I mean, a little, but not really. We’re gonna work on your connection with your core, mostly, since that’s where your power malfunctions are coming from. Your core has the powers ready, but you’re not used to using it.”
She narrowed her eyes, but he seemed certain of his answers, and, well. She had no way to disprove him, did she? “And new powers? Building stamina?”
“Both will come with time. Your core is still new, and young. It needs time to grow and stabilize. Using your powers will guide it in a certain direction, which is why training will help you develop new powers sooner. And using them more will help you build stamina faster, since your core will focus more on developing it.”
“I… see.” She prodded the core again, mentally. It stirred, easily. Was that just the trick to controlling her powers? Getting better at communicating with this new part of herself? “So how are we gonna train that?”
Danny’s expression grew sheepish. “Well, mostly I figured you could just work on your powers here, where no one would notice. Like I said, control comes from practice, and I can’t really help much with that.” He shrugged. “Besides the assurance that you won’t get hurt, of course.”
Jazz shot him an unamused look, but he ignored it completely.
“So, anyway, wanna start with intangibility? I’ll be here to make sure you don’t get stuck phasing through something.”
“That’s a possibility?” She blanched, throwing a quick look downward at the ground. She hadn’t even known that it was possible for her to get stuck!
“Well, it’s never happened to me, since I’m pretty sure you retain intangibility by reflex if you’re partially phased into something…” Danny shrugged. “But now you can be sure that it won’t happen to you!”
“You’re a terrible teacher! Now you’ve gone and made me scared of something I didn’t even know I could be scared about!” She combed a hand through her hair, aggravatedly. “Honestly, Danny!”
“Uh, whoops.” He shot her a sheepish grin, rubbing the back of his neck. “I was pretty scared of accidentally getting myself stuck, so I figured the same would go for you. Sorry.”
“Honestly,” she grumbled, half to herself. “So far the only useful thing you’ve done to help is deal with all those other ghosts.”
Danny laughed, clearly still a little unsure of himself. “That’s fair. This basic stuff, I can’t help with, not much. But once you’ve gotten better at it, I’ll be able to teach you all kinds of stuff. Like this!”
His fists lit up, suddenly, bright energized ectoplasm balling around his hands. Like the blasts from an ecto-gun, except that he was forming it himself.
“Pretty cool, huh? But if you’re not too big on fighting, you can use it defensively as well.” He swept his hands out, and the ectoplasm following, forming a hollowed-out ball around him. “See? We’ll spend a lesson or two on control, but after all, I’ll help you with new stuff.”
Well, she wasn’t above admitting that she’d been convinced. “What if I work on control at home, and we start on that stuff next time? Shields could be really useful.”
“Hah, uh, I guess?” The shield broke apart again, and Danny shrugged. “I mean, I usually dodge hits instead, since that costs less energy. But ecto-blasts are a pretty basic technique, so we can start on that next time, if you really want to. But! You’ll need to have a good amount of control already. Your core is essential for that.”
“Isn’t my core always essential?” she asked dryly. “Since it’s, you know, the center of my ghost powers?”
“You know what I mean.” He stuck out his tongue, and she stamped down her reflex to do it back. No matter how much like Danny he was, this wasn’t her brother. It was unfair to all of them to pretend otherwise.
Besides, if she was going to protect this town, she had to be a hero. No, not just a hero. The hero. Mature and an icon for the town to look up to. Not just a kid.
“But you want to get going, then?” Danny said, snapping her out of her thoughts again. “Since you said you wanted to work on your control at home?”
“Uh, yeah. If that’s… okay with you?” She twirled a strand of her vividly purple hair, still unused to its color—and the way it wisped. “Plus I kind of… need to clean the lab?”
“I’m not gonna force you to keep my company if you can’t or don’t want to, Jazz.” Danny met her eyes, the bright green barely hiding the sadness in them. “Go, then. I’ll be around when you’ve ready for the next lesson.”
“Right…” She scuffed one boot on the ground, but, well. She had committed, now, no matter how distressed Danny seemed. Besides, there was nothing she could do for him. “Well, thanks, anyway. For this, and for helping me with the ghosts.”
“Of course.” He cocked his head at her. “You’re my sister, Jazz, even if this is a different universe. Stay safe, okay? Cleaning the lab is always a nasty chore for a half-ghost.”
“I’ll be careful,” she assured him, before turning around, ready to fly back home. Then she paused, glancing back over her shoulder at him. “You be careful too, alright? Just because you’re not my Danny doesn’t mean that I want you to get hurt, either.”
“I promise.” He smiled at her, and she could almost pretend not to see the sadness in it.
She nodded to herself, finally pushing herself off and into the air. He’d be fine. Danny—Phantom—had been half-ghost for over two years. He could take care of himself.
But he just looked so lonely, here.
---
“What is this even supposed to be?” Jazz wondered out-loud, carefully lifting one of the half-assembled inventions in the lab. She was just about done cleaning the lab, anyway. She could afford the distraction. “Some kind of vacuum?”
Her core pulsed in her chest, and for a brief moment, she worried that she had somehow turned the invention on. But then cold air wisped from her mouth. Heaving a sigh, she turned around, towards the Portal.
Its green surface was flat, undisturbed. Ectoplasm swirled, like it was held back by an invisible barrier.
Suddenly it parted, a single humanoid ghost coming through. Green skin and oversized green gloves, a white coat with a humongous collar, and some of the wildest hair she had ever seen. Square glasses blocked the ghost’s eyes, so she couldn’t tell the color. Not that it was a big deal, but still.
“Uh, hey,” she greeted the ghost, putting down the ghost-vacuum-thing. “You’re not here to cause trouble, are you?”
“I am Technus!” the ghost retorted, pressing one hand to his puffed-up chest, “And I’m the master of all technology!”
“Okay, cool. Good for you.” She narrowed her eyes at him, nudging the vacuum-invention behind herself. “That didn’t answer my question.”
Technus narrowed his glasses—or glass-like eyes, she supposed—at her. “What does it matter to you? All technology is mine, anyway!”
“No it’s not! I won’t let you steal in this city!” She stood up, puffing herself up as well. “Either you go back into the Zone, or I’ll make you!”
“Hah! You’ve got nothing on me! Technus, master of all things electronic and beeping! And you! You are just a puny human!”
Jazz growled, her core eagerly stirring to life. Energy crackled over her skin as she shifted into her ghost form, casual clothes replaced by her purple jumpsuit.
“Ah, well—” Technus shifted, clearly thrown off. “No matter! Adios!”
And before she could stop him, he darted upwards, phasing through the ceiling of the lab.
“Hey, hold up!” She shot after him, phasing through the house. For a moment she was afraid that she had lost him, but then she caught sight of him again. Speeding towards the city, faster than she thought she could fly. Dammit!
Pushing herself to her max speed, she raced after him. He wasn’t all that fast, sure, but neither was she!
Technus slowed down soon enough, apparently distracted by an electronics store. Jazz finally caught up with him when her ghost sense went off again. She cursed, already turning to look for the other ghost, when Danny came to a halt next to her.
“Sorry, I was still in the woods. What’s up?”
“Some ghost named Technus.” She gestured over at the ghost, reaching for the Thermos on her belt. Yes, it was there, thank goodness. “He got away from me before I could shove him back through the Portal.”
“I’ll deal with him, he can be a bit of a pain in the ass.” Danny’s expression was serious for once, clearly focused on their strategy. “I want you to make sure he doesn’t get access to any of the tech around here. He’ll be able to possess it, and that’ll make him way stronger.”
“And we don’t want that. Got it.” She nodded, then dove down. It wouldn’t be a particularly hard thing, she figured, since Danny would be fighting Technus and thus distracting him. And it would give her a perfect opportunity to watch Phantom use his powers to their full extend, to watch him fight for real. Snapping up the occasional animal ghost didn’t count.
She had just lowered herself between Technus and the store when Danny followed her lead. Except, unlike her, he just straight-up tackled Technus.
Danny hit the full ghost like a meteor strike, hitting him at speeds she didn’t realize he could fly at. Somehow her not-quite brother stopped before either of them hit the ground, halting so suddenly that she was amazed he didn’t snap his neck.
Suddenly electricity lanced through the two brawling ghosts, crackling over Technus’ body, forcing Danny—Phantom—to distance himself again.
“I am Technus! Master of all things electric and zappy!”
“Oh, shut up, will you?” Phantom snapped back, a green ecto-blast forming in his fist. “I’ve heard it before!”
Technus opened his mouth, but before he could reply, the blast hit him. The ghost went flying down, crumpling onto the asphalt road. Not hard enough to cause serious damage, though, she was surprised to note.
Phantom shot down after him. Landed on Technus and pressed him back down when the ghost tried to get up.
“No, you stay down and listen,” he growled, aura flaring bright. “Here’s what we’re gonna do, okay? You go back to the Zone, and you’re gonna cool off. If you ever decide you can come here without stealing anything, or causing any other sort of trouble, you can come talk to me. Understood?”
“And if I don’t?” Technus narrowed his eyes, spectral tail lashing. “What if I leave, and come back unnoticed?”
“I’ll know.” Phantom leaned in close, eyes glowing brighter. “Trust me, you don’t want to find out. Leave, Technus, or I won’t ask so nicely.”
Then he let go, floating away from the previously pinned ghost. Technus looked between him, then her.
“Fine,” the ghost finally said, clearly begrudgingly. “Even I, Technus, know when I am outmatched.”
“Just go already,” Phantom snapped at him, and Technus flinched away, closer to her. “Specter, mind escorting him back, so we’re sure he’s not getting away?”
“Yeah, sure.” She waved a hand in the direction of home. “Come on, get going. We don’t have all day.”

Remember the Ask about what "The Fairly OddParents" would be like as a Disney movie? Well, what if "Danny Phantom" was a Disney movie? Would Paulina or Dora be the traditional Disney Princess? Would Valerie or Ember be the modern go-getting Disney Princess? Would Sam openly mock all the Disney tropes? Would Cujo be the goofy animal sidekick? Would Jack and Maddie die, as Disney parents are wont to do? Would Danny and Jazz's sibling bond save the day, à la "Frozen"? And what would Youngblood do?
Hmm….. Jack and Maddie probably wouldn’t die. They’re among the most involved parents in the cartoon world, and too much would be lost if they were removed. They’d stay as they are, but there would a big overarching plot. They’re dragging Jazz and Danny out to vacation somewhere for the summer (to a ghostly location, of course) and that’s when the adventure kicks in.
I’m thinking a movie in a “contemporary sci-fi” setting. So no princesses in the overworld, but maybe Dora would be princess of the Ghost Zone, or at least a large portion of it. Dani could be a princess too, and maybe Vlad a king? Rich guy by day, king by night, with an adopted daughter he’s trying to use but is planning to kill before she can ever attempt to take his throne.
It would be hard to wrap the entire Jazz plotline into a single movie, but she’d find about Danny’s powers within the first twenty minutes and certainly help him towards the end. Presumably she’d take a damaging blow to the shoulder or legs right before Danny has to face the Big Bad (Vlad, in this case)
And… maybe Dani and Valerie would stay behind to protect her from a hoard of encroaching Ghosts (and stall the Ghosts from reaching Danny). Too many for Danny to wipe out quickly, so he has to make a move towards Vlad before Vlad puts his scheme into action. Which of course Vlad is in the process of doing right then.
Youngblood would have been like, the opening scene enemy that Danny was fighting (he already having his powers when the movie begun, and revealing his backstory as the movie progresses). He’d have his pirate ship and made his escape and left Danny bruised and exhausted (creating conflict when he goes home and has to avoid letting his parents and Jazz find out what he was doing).
Halfway through the movie, Danny would see Youngblood’s ship again, and threaten him to give him, Dani, and Valeria a ride through the Ghost Zone. Most likely, Youngblood would do so, but steer them into an area where he had lots of skeleton friends whom he’d then order to attack. Danny, Dani, and Val would then part ways with Youngblood here as they take off running…
Something like that, I think. We start with Sam and Tucker supporting Danny in a fight against Youngblood (who gets away with hardly a scratch like at the start of “Pirate Radio”), then being exhausted and falling asleep while doing homework, going to school, getting into a fight with Skulker, Val shows up and the two figure out each other’s identities (or more likely, Val reluctantly agrees to work with Phantom), and Skulker drops a clue that hints at Vlad’s plan. Jazz probably witnessed the battle à la “My Brother’s Keeper”.
Danny comes home and his parents want to go on vacation, Danny convinces them to go to the place that Skulker’s clue points to, (his parents are resistant at first until Jazz jumps in and supplies information about how this place is so totally haunted and Jack agrees immediately). I guess… Tucker and Sam (and Sam’s faithful puppy Cujo) come along for goth/tech/permission to join the Fentons on a family roadtrip reasons.
During their trip, Vlad sends Dani to spy on the Danny, and she decides to test him by roughing him up. This plays out like the first half of “Fenton Menace”, but with Dani instead of Youngblood. Dani does a lot of damage to Danny, but Valerie sweeps in to help, I suppose? After the two take down Dani, she does the “I’m on your side and I want to stop my dad” thing. She reveals stuff about Vlad’s plan and they agree to help her.
Dani probably lured Valerie after her deliberately, and Valerie tailed her the entire time. During the night, while the others are camping (Valerie by herself b/c she can’t tell the Fentons she showed up a few hundred miles from Amity Park), Dani leads Danny, Val, Sam, and Tucker to a suspicious location near the campsite. Jazz, who had never followed asleep because she suspected her brother was up to something (and she suspects he’s Phantom but might not have full proof yet), tags along from a distance. This turns out to be good, because Dani led the others directly into a trap. While the room fills with water/flames/etc., Dani fights Danny and Val, taunting them that they can’t stop her AND save Tucker and Sam. She’s right, so Danny and Val save Tuck and Sam while Dani escapes.
Dani runs straight into Jazz, who blasts her with some ghost weapon. This is when Jazz reveals she knows about Danny’s ghost powers and wants to help. They try questioning Dani, but she ends up escaping, and the others go back to bed.
In the morning, Jack and Maddie explore the suspicious locations they came here to see while the others follow, searching for clues. They end up finding one and somehow determine that Vlad (who would have made an appearance at the beginning of the movie as the suspicious mayor or even as someone Danny was fighting) is going to try taking over the world from some location on the opposite side of the world. The team are wondering how they’ll get there when they hear Dani’s voice and find that Youngblood has captured her and taken her prisoner (in the process, revealing that Dani is a princess and worth a lot of ransom. Or, he thinks she’s pretty. Both, maybe.)
This is when the team exhorts a ride out of Youngblood, who opens a portal to the Ghost Zone because he can totally do that. Dani is still a prisoner who refuses to navigate, and now Y.B. is upset because he just got beaten up, but he acts like he’s helping Danny because he doesn’t want the world destroyed or whatever.
As said above, Youngblood drives pretty far through the Zone before he gets his goons to chase off Danny and his crew. They leave without Dani, but Danny realizes he’s too moral for that and goes back for her. This is the last time Youngblood’s seen in the movie, unless he appears in some celebration at the end when the world is saved.
Youngblood brought them near Dora’s kingdom, so everyone rests. Dani is still tied up and very argumentative, but she can’t escape because Val has a blaster pointed at her constantly, I guess. Dora gives everyone some food… She probably has the team complete a task for her (like helping her get rid of her cruel brother, and maybe Skulker and Technus make cameos here?) before she gives them the last information they need to stop Vlad.
Oh, I know! Dora tells them that the nearest portal is in a human high school. So, the team has to get past Poindexter, and perhaps even the Lunch Lady. Oh yeah, and the Box Ghost would have shown up earlier in the movie (maybe he and Youngblood were in the opening together, fighting over supply crates at the Amity Park dock warehouse).
They’re on the opposite side of the world now, so it’s probably night again for them (not much time has passed back with their parents, who haven’t realized they’re gone). Poindexter has been pacified, but the team still has to get to Vlad. Actually, Vlad probably shows up to check on them, frees Dani, and destroys several weapons and scatters the team. He tries to use Dani to fight the team, but this goes about as well as it does in “Kindred Spirits”, and Dani does her “You are not the boss of me!” bit.
So now Dani’s on their side. Technus and Skulker are closing in, along with some other baddies from the series. Jazz has been hurt and the others stay to defend her while Danny chases after Vlad and they have their final showdown. Vlad’s plan was either about making it easier for Ghosts to leave the Zone, or sealing it off so humans weren’t coming through it anymore, depending on what society is like during this movie (Ghost Zone tourism, anyone?)
My guess would be that Vlad was trying to hold all portals open permanently (because maybe only unreliable portals existed) and Danny stops him by sealing him in the Ghost Zone. This then stops a lot of Ghost activity and leaves he and Dani as the last ghosts in the real world…
… Or so he thinks, until some baddies who weren’t inside the Zone when it sealed arrive to remind them that their work is far from done. And although the team gulps at the daunting task ahead of them, saving humans from ghosts is what they do and what they love.
They also have a really long way to get back home since they can’t shortcut through the Zone anymore but hey, that’s what flying friends are for.

What A Nice Surprise CH.5
Sadly linebreaks are still gone from Tumblr so I went with (---) instead. Check it out via one of the mirror links instead, maybe?
First Chapter - Previous Chapter - Next Chapter AO3 - FFnet
Danny capped the Thermos in his hand, releasing a tired sigh. The ghost – some random non-intelligent wolf – hadn’t been strong, but it had proven exceptionally tricky to catch. Kept giving him the slip and was just fast enough for Danny to struggle to close the distance between them.
But, finally, he got it. And it wasn’t even that late. Late in the evening, sure, but if he went home he would still have time to work on his homework!
He grinned at the Thermos in his hand, pleased. Just to be safe, though, he cast out his ghost sense. No, it seemed like this was the only ghost nearby…
An ectoblast whizzed by his ear, and Danny flinched away. Whirled around to face the shooter.
Valerie. Of course it was Valerie. His one opponent that he couldn’t just blast, the one that just wouldn’t believe him. Whose truces just wouldn’t hold up, for no lack of trying on his part.
Valerie, who always insisted on seeing the evil Phantom did.
“Hey Red,” he said, shooting her a short wave. She just growled in response, charging another shot.
“Not very talkative today, are we?” he tried again, keeping his hands lifted and in plain view. Hopefully she would calm down a little like this, if she knew he couldn’t fight back.
And, well. If she shot anyway, he could easily raise a shield like this.
“Shut up,” she snarled, and her gun fired simultaneously. Danny yelped and formed a shield.
It blocked the hit, but the impact still blasted him back. He hit a building, hard.
With a groan he dropped down onto the ground. Half-crumpled, he tried to sit up to keep an eye on Valerie.
“Come on,” he complained, trying to keep the winded tone out of his voice. “What did I do now?”
She re-entered his view. Her board hovered only a foot above the ground, yet she hadn’t retracted it. The gun in her hand whined as it loaded another shot.
“You know what you did.” Her voice was firm. Unwavering. “Why I can’t trust you.”
“I really don’t.” He judged her hold on the gun, her aim. Braced himself, then shot a weak ectoblast right at the weapon.
The blast knocked her aim off, and the blast barely missed him.
Danny pushed himself off of the ground, zipping away. He just needed to throw her off of his tail – or to get out of her sight long enough to change back to human. He would risk walking home instead of flying if that got rid of her.
But her hoverboard has had some upgrades. And with Valerie’s agility, it was almost enough to keep up with him.
Certainly good enough to keep him in her eyesight.
He dove around a corner, then screeched to a halt to avoid collision. In front of him stood two more ghost hunters, guns aimed right at him. The ecto-green elements glowed as the guns charged. Light glinted off of the goggles of the hunters, the red of the woman and the teal of the man.
Then the guns stopped whining, and Danny huffed out a relieved sigh.
“Phantom!” his dad greeted, pulling his hood off and revealing the bright blue eyes underneath. “You’re in a rush! Chasing a ghost?”
“Uh, no.” Before he could explain further, his sensitive ears picked up on the ever-present hum of Valerie’s engines. And yep, there she was, rounding the corner he had just careened past.
“Phantom!” she roared, already lifting her gun up to shoot him. He yelped – in a very grown-up way, of course – and dove behind the massive bulk of his dad.
It was, maybe, an automatic response. These were his parents – it was their duty to keep him safe. Big and apparently powerful ghost hunting weapons definitely counted as a threat they would keep him safe from.
But having Phantom hide behind Fenton’s parents… might not have been the right thing to do.
Oh well, too late to turn back now.
Valerie faltered. The whine of her gun quieted, and its muzzle lowered. No matter the circumstances, Valerie would not – could not – shoot humans.
“Phantom, why are you hiding behind ghost hunters?” she asked, exasperated. Then, after a short pause, she turned to his parents. “Actually, why are you letting him?”
“Because… we don’t want you to shoot him?” Jack said, uncertainly. He was half-turned, looking between Danny and Valerie. “Phantom is not a bad ghost, Red.”
She snorted, disbelieving. “Yeah, right. You just want him for yourself.”
“We’re serious.” His mom shifted into a more defensive pose. It didn’t go unnoticed by Danny – and clearly not by Valerie either. Danny got the distinct feeling that Val was narrowing her eyes at them, but he couldn’t tell with her helmet still on. “We’ve had a truce with Phantom for weeks. He’s been helping us with our research.”
“He’s tricking you somehow.” Valerie shook her head, dismissively. “Or he’s controlling you, or something. There’s no way that he– that any of this is real. I’m not falling for this, Phantom.”
She raised the gun again, tilting her head as if she was considering taking the shot. Then she apparently decided it was impossible with the Fentons between them, as she lowered it again. She pointed between the visor of her helmet – where her eyes would be – and him. “I don’t trust you, Phantom. And I don’t know what you’re doing here, with the Fentons. But I don’t believe any of this.”
Then, with a hum that turned into a roar, she shot off. Her engines left a faint pink trail, but it faded off quickly.
Confident that she really had left, Danny floated back over his parents to face them.
“Thanks.” He rubbed the back of his neck, smiling sheepishly. “I, uh. Sorry that she didn’t believe you.”
“She really doesn’t like you, huh?” His mom eyed him, but he couldn’t read her expression with her goggles on. “Yet you don’t seem like the type to do so on purpose.”
He snorted, then shook his head. Dropped his hand again. “I didn’t, I swear! But Cujo just ruined some of her things, and she thinks that he’s my dog so she blames me for it.”
“That’s one hell of a grudge.” But she pulled the goggles up again, and Danny could see that she wasn’t angry – not at him, at least. “Must’ve been important to her.”
“I dunno.” Danny shrugged. Yes, Valerie’s money had been important to her at the time, but now? He wasn’t sure. He didn’t spend a lot of time with her anymore, not after the dating fiasco a while back. “Maybe. Or maybe she’s just full of spite and not ready to give up on her decisions.”
His dad snorted, but wiped the smile of his face immediately when Maddie turned to him. “Yes, well. I thought you two worked together before?”
“We have,” Danny acknowledged with another shrug. “But it was always only short-term. A bigger ghost, a badder ghost. And then once the troubles are over, Val- Red decides I’m not to be trusted.”
His parents shared a glance, clearly having caught the trip. Dammit, Fenton, he chastised himself mentally, couldn’t even keep Valerie’s identity safe? But it was too late now. At least it wasn’t her full name – not even her full first name.
“That’s… unfortunate. In a city like this, we could really use all the help we can get hunting ghosts.” Maddie pocketed her gun in her hip holster. “But if Red continues to threaten our ally, we can’t consider her one either.”
“Maybe we can convince her,” his dad said hopefully. “It’ll take time, sure, but it’ll be worth it. Right, Phantom?”
“I, uh. I mean, yeah.” He shifted, a little awkward. “If you can convince her, that would be great, yeah.”
They nodded. Then his mom smiled at him. “And, Phantom? We’ll take over patrol for you, alright? So she won’t try to ambush you when you’re alone.”
He smiled back, brightly. “That’s… That’s really nice. Thanks. Thank you so much.” This way he could focus on homework without even having to worry about ghosts popping up!
“Hey, it’s no problem kid.” His dad shrugged, also grinning. “It’s our job, you know?”
“Right,” Danny said, hesitant. Of course. His parents’ job as ghost hunters.
Jack grimaced, then suddenly swung an arm around his shoulders. He pulled him against his side, despite the cold Danny knew he gave off. “Which also includes taking care of fellow ghost hunters, you know?” He ruffled Danny’s hair. “Like you.”
Cold crawled up Danny’s neck and cheeks, and he knew he was blushing green. Embarrassed, he looked away – but he couldn’t deny that he felt comforted nonetheless. “I– Thanks.”
“Hey, don’t worry about it.” Jack released Danny again, but remained close. “Go do… whatever you do when you’re not protecting the city. Be a kid, Phantom. You’ve earned it.”
Ha! Be a kid. Doing homework counted as being a kid, he supposed. “Yeah. I… Yeah. Thanks, you two.”
Danny smiled at his parents, then tugged on his invisibility. Certain that no one could see him anymore, he made his way back home.
The warm feeling in his chest remained with him for the rest of the night.
---
Mere days later, it was the weekend again. And, once again, Danny had made plans to visit his parents as Phantom. They had been busy this week – not with regular ghost hunting stuff, but with him, specifically. With finding ways to prove that Phantom wasn’t as bad as people believed.
With proving to Valerie that he wasn’t all that bad.
So. Danny figured that they deserved a reward of sorts. A show of appreciation – even if they couldn’t really know it was supposed to be that, because Phantom had no way of knowing how much they were doing.
He rang the doorbell, then phased inside immediately. He floated in the hallway instead. Floating outside his own house invisible was tiring, so he figured he could shake it up a little instead.
“Phantom?” an uncertain voice asked, and Danny’s eyes snapped to the staircase.
The staircase where Jazz stood. Whoops. He didn’t know she was home.
“Hey,” he said, shooting her a grin that he hoped wasn’t shaky. “D’you mind if I steal your parents?”
She snorted, coming down the staircase to join him. “They could use some time outside the lab. What are you planning on doing with them?”
“There’s this ghost in Casper High, dunno if you’ve heard of him.” The two of them entered the living room, and Jazz sat down on one of the armchairs, then nodded that she was still listening. “The two of us have a deal. I took your parents to meet them a week or two ago, but we had to cut it off early. I figured we could go for a second meeting.”
“Sidney Poindexter, right?” Jazz frowned, thoughtfully. “I’ve heard of him, but I wasn’t sure if he was real. Lots of people say he is – that he hurts random popular people around Casper High, and all that.”
Danny rolled his eyes. He knew they said that – but he also knew it was a lie. Or a twisted truth, at least.
“Sort of,” he told his sister instead. “Sidney hates bullies – was bullied pretty much all his life, and his afterlife isn’t much better. And, well. Most popular kids are bullies, and vice versa.”
“Ah, I see.” She nodded. “He picks on bullies and protects their victims because he used to be a victim himself. He empathizes. Fascinating… Ghosts really do have the same emotional range as humans.”
“Uh, yeah.” Danny shrugged, glancing away. “People just don’t realize it because of biased science by ghost hunters, and because most ghosts that leave the Zone are, well.” He gestured vaguely. “Y’know.”
“Violent and aggressive? Yeah, I know.” She smiled knowingly – teasingly – and Danny felt the green creep back onto his face. Stupid really obvious glowing blush! Stupid sister that did sister things.
In the silence that fell, Danny could clearly hear his parents scrambling around downstairs. They probably had a project they couldn’t just put down. That was fine. He could wait.
“Could I… come along?” Jazz asked, breaking the silence again. Danny’s eyes snapped over to her, surprised by the question.
“I, uh. Why?”
She shrugged, playing with a strand of her hair. Seemed uncertain now, like her question was more of a spontaneous outburst than properly thought out.
“I think it would be interesting to talk with… Sidney, right?” At his confirming nod, she continued. “Plus, he could use the socializing with more people his age. I don’t think a lot of kids at school talk with him.”
“They don’t.” He supposed Jazz was right. And Sidney would absolutely enjoy her company – they were both complete nerds. “And I guess you’re right. Sid would enjoy the company. Just be aware that he slips into old-timey ways sometimes. Mostly speech, but…” Danny shrugged. “Well, you get what I mean, right?”
“I do.” Jazz gestured over to the couch, and with a roll of his eyes, Danny perched on the arm of the couch. Not quite was Jazz had intended, based on her expression, but good enough. “Plus, I think he could use some psychiatric help. Bullying… it can hurt teenagers.”
“I know.” Danny sighed heavily. Despite Dash’s love of Phantom, his bullying towards Fenton hadn’t relented. And with his diminished friendship with Sam and Tucker, he had less hope of them distracting Dash. The only thing he had going for him was his supernatural speed – and his ability to turn invisible if he could get out of Dash’s sight.
But the way she eyed him made him think he said something wrong. Slowly, hesitantly, she asked, “You were bullied?”
Danny shrugged, uncertain. It was true, sure. But it wasn’t something he wanted associated with Phantom, per se.
“I… yeah.” He couldn’t think of a way to deny it. Might as well go with the flow, right? “A lot, actually. But it’s okay. Well, not okay, but… it is what it is. There is no way to change it.” The teachers never listen, anyway. Even if it’s still ongoing, even if it’s happening right in front of them. Bullies were never punished.
It was part of the reason why he was so eager to let Sidney have his way.
The calculating look in Jazz’s eyes didn’t go away. But her eyes did soften, and she smiled kindly. “That explains a lot, actually.”
“About?” He frowned, confused. How did this change anything?
“About you.” She shifted, looking at him earnestly. “I was wondering about that for a while, you see. Because even if you’re not the only good ghost, you certainly are the only one here. And you said you did it to protect your friends, your family, but…” The pluck of hair was twisted, twirled, again. “But there had to be more. More of a reason, more stakes.”
“What, the risk of my loved ones getting injured wasn’t enough?” Danny’s frown deepened as he looked at her.
“No, no.” She raised her hands placatingly. “That’s not what I mean. But not just anyone would do that, Phantom. Not just anybody would stand up to someone more experienced, and likely more powerful, than them just to protect others. But it makes sense now.”
The frown fell away, and Danny shook his head. “I don’t get it.”
“It’s easy. You were bullied in life. A lot, right?” The armchair creaked as she shifted again, her hands waving through the air as she spoke enthusiastically. “So now, in death, you have the power to stand up for yourself. But you don’t just use it for yourself. You use it for everyone, everyone who can’t do it themselves. The ghosts, the malevolent ones, are the bullies. And now you are the person you wished had been there for you, before. The person who stops the bullies, who stops people from getting hurt.”
“Oh,” he said simply. She… she had a point. Looking at it this way, he supposed that he had become the kind of person he wished to see sometimes. Like he had grabbed all the traits of the people he loved – of his parents and his friends – and mashed them together into Phantom’s perfect persona.
“You’re… really good at that.” He huffed out a disbelieving laugh. Count on Jazz to psycho-analyze him regardless of form, and nail it as well. “Yeah, you should definitely come along and meet Sidney.”
She grinned in response, opening her mouth to reply. But then thundering footsteps came from the lab, and their parents burst inside.
“Phantom!” his dad cheerily greeted, storming over to swing an arm around him. “Sorry to keep you waiting, kid!”
“It’s alright.” He grinned despite the rib-crushing strength of his dad, barely clinging on to the couch he was sat on. “Jazz kept me company.”
“Really now?” Jack released him, then turned to look at Jazz. “Jazzy-Pants, how nice of you! Finally showing an interest in our profession, huh?”
“The psychology behind ghosts is fairly interesting – and unexplored.” Jazz shrugged casually. “You, and all other ghost hunters, are so focused on the physical aspect that no one even realized that ghosts were just as complex as humans. It’s really fascinating stuff.”
Their mom nodded approvingly. “Yes, you’re completely right. You should come down in the lab to talk about your findings sometimes, honey. If you get it sorted out, you could even publish a paper!”
“Maybe…” Jazz’s expression was surprisingly thoughtful. She really seemed to be considering it, despite her former reluctance to associate with her parents – and ghosts in general. “I would like to focus on individual ghosts first, see if I can help them with their problems.”
“A whole new approach to ghost hunting!” Jack clapped her on the shoulder, and Jazz almost fell out of her chair. “That’s my kid!”
Maddie shook her head fondly, then turned back to Danny. “What earned us the pleasure of your visit today, Phantom? Dropping by for fun, or did you need us for something?”
“I figured we could go for another meeting with Sidney?” He shrugged. “Since we had to leave early last time. And Jazz said she was interested in meeting him as well, so.”
“Well, that sounds like a good plan.” Maddie nodded approvingly. “He was a nice young man, that’s for sure. Will we meet him in the parking lot again?”
“I thought we could meet in the courtyard instead? I’ll fly ahead to find him, and then we can sit down instead of standing around.” Danny rubbed the back of his neck. “If that’s okay, of course.”
“Sounds good to me. Jack, Jazz?” She turned to face the rest of the family, where Jazz was trying to free herself from her dad’s arm. “That okay with you as well?”
Jack, who didn’t seem to have heard any of the conversation, cheerfully agreed nonetheless. “Yeah, of course!”
“That’s okay with me as well.” Danny finally took mercy on Jazz and pulled their dad’s arm off of her so she could escape. She shot him a grateful look, and he grinned in return.
“Then I’ll get going.” Danny pushed himself off of the couch, floating instead. “If you guys pick a spot, Sidney and I will find you.”
“See you in a bit, Phantom!” his dad boomed, the sound following him even when he phased outside.
---
Finding his parents (and Jazz) proved as easy as he had expected. Besides the fact that the three of them were the only ones out here on a Saturday afternoon, two of them were also dressed in bright hazmat.
Yeah, the day Danny couldn’t find his parents in a crowd was probably the day he would officially declare himself blind.
He took a non-existent seat at the head of the table, floating in the open space in a sitting position. Sidney took the only actual free seat, next to Jazz.
“Didn’t keep you waiting, did we?” he asked, glancing at his family.
“You didn’t, no worries.” His mom flapped a hand, leaving the other resting on the hard wooden table. “We just sat down. Sidney, nice to see you again.”
The ghost grinned back. “You as well, madam. And you too, sir.” Then the boy turned to Jazz, straightening his glasses. “And I’m afraid I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting you yet, miss.”
“I’m Jazz. Jazz Fenton.” She extended her hand, and they shook. “You’re Sidney Poindexter, right?”
“That I am,” he confirmed, straightening his bow tie. “Has Phantom introduced me?”
“He has. But I heard about you at school as well.” She twisted in her seat to face him properly. “According to Phantom, you help protect the kids who can’t protect themselves.”
Sidney blushed, his cheeks growing marginally darker and faintly green. “Ah, yes, well. I try my best.”
“And you do a good job of it, especially considering your past.” Smiling, she pushed herself out of her seat. “Speaking of which… Would you mind sitting down to talk in private?”
“Um.” Sidney glanced between her and Danny. Knowing what Jazz was trying to achieve, Danny nodding reassuringly.
“Sure,” Sidney said, floating up as well. “Shall we take a seat at a nearby table, then, so your parents won’t get worried?”
“Sounds good.” Jazz turned back to the Fentons. “We’ll be just over there, okay?”
“Sure sweetie.” Maddie smiled, and the three of them watched as Sidney and Jazz left. Once they were sure that the two were out of earshot, Maddie sighed, pleased. “We don’t deserve her.”
“She’s a good person,” Danny agreed, also looking at his sister and his friend. “She’ll do a lot of good things with her life, I’m sure.”
“I just… worry, sometimes.” Maddie shifted, and Danny looked back at her, confused. “About both our kids, I mean. I… We know we’re not the most conventional parents. And sometimes, I fear… I’m afraid that we’re hurting them.”
She sighed, deeply and wearily. Jack wrapped an arm around her before she continued. “Especially with how busy we’ve gotten nowadays. And Jazz will be going to college soon, and Danny is growing apart from us as well, spending less and less time with us… And I can’t help but worry. Are we doing the right thing?”
“I think…” Danny swallowed, heavily, then tried again. “I think you’re doing your best, and I think your kids know it. Parenting… Parenting isn’t easy, and neither are teenagers.” He huffed out a laugh. “Being a teen isn’t easy either. But I’m sure your kids know that you’re trying, and… and I wouldn’t worry so much. Everything will be okay.”
Maddie nodded, and her gloved hand wrapped around Danny’s. “It’s a parent’s job to worry, Phantom. Just because it’s not necessary doesn’t mean I can stop.”
But she smiled, kindly. “But… thank you. Hearing that helps a lot.”
“I’m glad to be able to help.” Danny glanced back to where Jazz and Sidney sat, and felt his own lips twist up. “And I think your daughter is doing the same for Sidney.”
---
“What, um.” Sidney paused, uncertain. Sure, Danny seemed to approve of this conversation but Sidney had no clue what the intention had been. The last thing he wanted to do was accidentally reveal his friend’s secret identity.
And, above all, how were you supposed to talk to the sister of your best friend if she didn’t know that her brother was the best friend of a ghost or that he was part ghost himself?
“What did I want to talk about?” Jazz smiled kindly. Sidney would be lying if he said it didn’t help soothe him. “Phantom mentioned something interesting about your past earlier today, and I wanted to talk with you about it.”
So… nothing about Danny’s secret identity? Oh, good.
“Oh. What, uh. What was it?” He couldn’t deny being curious. And… perhaps he did miss talking to other teenagers. Danny was nice, but they weren’t very similar. But Danny had often compared Sidney to his sister – said they were both studious nerds, and all that.
Jazz shifted, laying her arms on the table on front of her. Sidney had sat down on the bench in front of her, but was now growing increasingly uncertain at her relentless gaze.
“According to Phantom, you used to be bullied, back when you were alive.” Oh. Oh. Was this what she wanted to talk about? Seeing his probably panicked expression, Jazz continued to speak with a soothing tone. “Bullying… It can have a heavy impact on a teenager. And, I don’t know if you know this, but I have… a bit of an interest in psychology.”
This, Sidney did know. Danny griped about it a lot. That, and he joked about it a lot – about how Jazz would be thrilled if she found out about the Phantom thing, from a psychological standpoint.
“I think few would know that better than I,” he ended up saying. After all, of the many that had suffered from bullying, most didn’t stick around. Not like he had. “That’s why I protect the kids now. To make sure none suffer like I have.”
She seemed saddened by this knowledge, catching on the unsaid words. “That’s really noble of you, Sidney. But…” Jazz shifted, folding her hands together in front of her. “But you’re still around, so your old experiences can still hurt you. Are still hurting you, I think.”
“Maybe so,” he acknowledged with a loose shrug. He supposed that he was catching onto Danny’s manner of speech, but it was to be expected. The kid was pretty much the only person he spoke to, nowadays. “Most ghosts are still hurt by their old lives. It’s why they stick around as ghosts, you know? Happy people don’t become ghosts.”
“Then all of those ghosts deserve help. And I don’t know if I can help all of them, but you, you I can help.” She grabbed his hand, ignoring that the limb must’ve felt uncomfortably cold in her hand. He couldn’t help but lock eyes with her, the bright teal gazing back. “Sidney, your experiences have been hard and unkind. Traumatizing, even. Please, let me help.”
“I…” He didn’t know where he wanted to go with this. He didn’t know what he wanted to say. Didn’t know what to think.
What did it say about his life, that he was caught off-guard so badly by such a kind offer.
“I would really appreciate that,” he managed finally. “I… Besides Phantom, no one has ever… just been kind. There was always a plot behind it, or a trick, or… or something else. Never out of the kindness of one’s heart.”
Something about the Fentons, despite how strange they were, worked. Because both their children were so wonderful.
It made Sidney sad, sometimes, that no one knew what Danny really did. What he was really like. That no one appreciated Danny Fenton, because he could do more good as Phantom – and he was okay with that. With sacrificing everyone’s opinions of him, just for that.
“Good,” Jazz said with a firm nod. She released his hand, but patted the top of it comfortingly. “And if you ever want to talk… Well, I’ll be around for the rest of the school year for sure.”
“You don’t… mind? That people would see you talk with a ghost?” ‘With me’ went unsaid.
But Jazz just shrugged. “People know my family as those ghost-nuts anyway. It’s much better now that everyone knows ghosts really exist.” Her lip twisted into a smile. “Besides, people don’t get to pick and choose which ghosts they accept. If they are fine with people talking to Phantom, then they don’t get to throw a fuss about me talking to you.”
“But what if they do?” He didn’t want her to get punished because of him. He was just… He was just Sidney. Nobody special, even after death.
“I don’t care.” She looked firm, set in her ways. “They don’t get to decide what I do with my life, and who I talk with. And if the teachers get worried, I can tell them that my parents and Phantom both approve of you. That should get them off my back.”
“Oh.” He wasn’t… wasn’t used to anyone making such an effort for him. Danny tried, usually, but Danny was busy. Had a lot going on for him. Which was why Sidney tried to help to the best of his abilities, of course, but.
But this was different. Nice different.
“Um. Thank you.” He smiled at her, shaky and uncertain but heartfelt. “Really, thank you.”
Then he glanced over to the other table, seeing three pairs of eyes watching them. “But we should probably rejoin the others.”
“Yeah, probably,” she said with a laugh. “But seriously, Sidney. Talk to me, okay?”
He nodded. Then, the words slipping out without him fully intending to, he said, “You can call me Sid. If you want.”
“Sid?” Her smile widened. “Yeah, of course. Now come on, Sid, before they get worried.”
