Day 3: Side Dish that Should've Been the Main Course

PureFolk from My Gear and Your Gown. I couldn't even tell you wtf that series was actually about because it was a total snooze fest for me BUT PUREFOLK THO??? A treat. An actual treat. Pure was an unapologetic slutty bisexual man, slanging the D to anyone who asked. Girls and Boys were CLAMORING to get at that pint-sized playboy. And with the mentality of "Relationships are stupid" who would've thought he would fall so hard and so fast for our sweet boy Folk? And for someone who claimed to hate love he was so sweet on Folk. Like completely enamored, it was disgustingly cute.

I just love that Pure was open and honest with Folk, when he declared that he was no longer for the streets and only wanted to be with Folk. Pure even let Folk go through his phone! AND THE HEIGHT DIFFERENCE??? I just enjoyed them and by the halfway point of the series I was skipping any scene that didn't have Pure or Folk in it. I needed a full-fleshed out series for them and not whatever tf the main plot was about.

Mark and Ou Wen from Love is Science? First of all, it's not a BL, but it should've been. It's not like the series was bad, I just didn't care about the main couple...at all. I tried. I did. Like super hard. The old couple was cute tho, but I was only invested in Mark and Ou Wen and Joanna (when her story intersected with theirs). Mark was such a hilarious character, the boy had me cackling with his antics. Ou Wen was our cool and suave elegant man who wore expensive suits and cared a great deal about love.

The series gave us Mark's bisexual awakening (which he handled very well). We got to see him fall head over heels in love after Ou Wen valiantly saved him from being beaten up by one of his fling's relatives (I think). They gave us Ou Wen's valid doubts about if Mark was serious about him, and his fears of being perceived negatively by the people around them. They gave us a surprise pregnancy and the struggles with deciding to abort or co-parent, glad we got the latter simply because they were such a fun trio. We even got Mark's coming out to his parents. They just had a superior storyline (and better chemistry). Also the eps were too long for such a minimal amount of Mark and Ou Wen.

instead of a hanwenzhou thought of the day, have instead a hanwenzhou spooky story of the day! no content warnings other than canon-typical death and violence

han ying and zhou zishu are on a mission for tianchuang (i know it makes no sense for the two of them to be on a mission together bc of ranks but [waves hands] go with it) and end up having to spend the night in some abandoned house in the middle of nowhere. han ying is on watch the first night and he hears what sounds like some people making their way towards the house. he tenses, preparing to fight, but— doesn’t hear anything else? finally, he goes outside and finds some dead bandits just laying there. weird.

the next day, they get up, ready to get moving and then discover that the house is now surrounded in very thick fog. neither of them is particularly familiar with the area, and they’re not due back yet, so zhou zishu decides they can stay one more day. han ying is prepared to simply kill time, but unfortunately the abandoned house and mystery dead bandits have awoken zhou zishu’s nosiness curiosity, so he starts poking around. it turns out this is a whole village that’s mostly decayed, and this house is the only one still standing. there are no more strange occurrences except that the fog never leaves or lessens all day. they prepare to sleep again.

the next morning, the fog is still there, and zhou zishu is beginning to get worried, but they’re distracted from that by the arrival of one philanthropist wen, who stumbles in out of the fog and tells them an obviously false story about getting lost on his way back home and ending up here. they are both extremely suspicious about him, but the suspicion is quickly outweighed by annoyance on zhou zishu’s part because wen kexing immediately starts flirting with him by being a pest. han ying is kind of amused about it because zhou zishu is acting kind of like a wet cat about the whole thing. han ying also warms up to wen kexing a lot when he offers to help them find something to eat in the abandoned village, something zhou zishu is not at all talented at. (they do both note that wen kexing seems to be strangely familiar with the nooks and crannies of this village, though.) there are many innuendos tossed around at bedtime, but they all settle down to sleep. on their watches, zhou zishu and han ying notice that wen kexing sleeps remarkably smoothly. almost as if he’s only pretending.

once again, they get up in the morning and leave the abandoned house only to find the thick fog has not dissipated at all. zhou zishu says they should just try leaving anyway. surely they can make it through the fog to somewhere they can actually see, and then they can figure out where they are. wen kexing whines at him about how scared he’d be, and how surely zhou-xiong wouldn’t leave a helpless scholar alone like this. something tugs at the back of han ying’s mind: wouldn’t it be nice to stay here? away from the death and intrigue of jinzhou and tianchuang? he pushes it down to follow zhou zishu. they enter the fog and end up back in the abandoned town. the same thing happens again shortly when they try heading a different direction. something is keeping them there. wen kexing doesn’t even hide his delight whenever they reappear. tonight, there is tension as they all prepare to sleep.

in the morning (which morning? it’s the fifth morning, right? or is it only the third? han ying can’t keep track anymore.) the fog has drifted a bit, leaving a bit more of the ruined village visible, but outside that, it’s as thick as ever. zhou zishu is silent and angry all day. han ying finally finds the time to talk to him away from wen kexing. ‘shouling, what can we do?’ zhou zishu doesn’t answer, staring out into the fog like he’s trying to find something. han ying is frustrated: how can he help if zhou zishu won’t tell him what’s going on? he tries asking some other questions, but still gets no real answers. han ying gives up and goes back to make food out of what wen kexing has found. wen kexing asks if zhou zishu is okay, and when han ying hesitates, pushes a little harder. ‘he seems worried. i don’t know what you two do, obviously it’s far too important and dangerous for someone like me to understand, but maybe you need a break.’ han ying doesn’t answer but privately he agrees. lately, zhou-shouling has been looking worse and worse. ever since they got news of jiuxiao’s death, he hasn’t been the same—and frankly he was already pretty bad before that. zhou zishu returns shortly before dark and refuses to speak about what he found. he seems unsettled. they bed down again for another night.

the fog is still there in the morning, unmoving and dense. zhou zishu sends han ying out into the rest of the village to see if there are any clues or anything they’ve missed. han ying doesn’t protest, even though he’s fairly certain that zhou zishu is just trying to get rid of him for a while. he explores the rest of the village—there are some little trinkets and decaying pieces of clothing in the ruins of the other buildings, and it makes him melancholy thinking about the people that must have lived here once. clearly they’re all gone now. when han ying returns in the afternoon, he finds wen kexing and zhou zishu standing outside the house they’ve all been staying in, facing off. zhou zishu looks completely stone-faced, while wen kexing is yelling, his hair and robes blowing in the wind. the wind that doesn’t seem to touch zhou zishu, and certainly doesn’t affect the fog.

‘you could,’ wen kexing is saying forcefully. ‘you could stay here and i could protect both of you. no one would ever find you. it would be safe.’ zhou zishu just scoffs. han ying doesn’t feel like he should be hearing this without them knowing he’s there, so he steps forward and clears his throat. ‘what’s happening?’ wen kexing turns to him. ‘han-xiongdi, if i said you could stay here, both of you, and never have to deal with complications from whatever you’re meant to be returning to, would you?’ han ying hesitates, and wen kexing’s face lights up in a smile. ‘see, you understand. what is there for you out there? you saw how i took care of the bandits that first night, right?’

zhou zishu finally speaks. ‘that’s not the point. you’re not even alive.’ han ying thinks he should be more surprised about that. he isn’t. wen kexing snarls. ‘so what? i’m as real as you are. what are you afraid of, a-xu?’ zhou zishu flinches at that, but he recovers. ‘maybe what i’m afraid of is being trapped somewhere forever. can you tell me i won’t be if i stay here with you?’ wen kexing looks wounded and without another word, he simply vanishes. ‘shouling?’ han ying asks quietly. ‘we’re leaving.’ the fog, when they approach it, parts in front of them. han ying keeps looking back, hoping to see wen kexing. he doesn’t. once they leave the fog, it closes behind them as if the village was never there.

it doesn’t take them long to reach a road, and it leads them to a small town before dark. they get two rooms at an inn. zhou zishu simply disappears into his without a word. han ying sits downstairs, picking at some food and worrying. he also thinks about how he doesn’t really want to go back, if he’s honest. han ying would follow zhou zishu anywhere, so if he goes back, han ying will be happy to return. but if he didn’t… han ying wouldn’t know what to do with himself, but he’s sure he could find something. it would be unfair to the others who are loyal to zhou zishu perhaps. maybe he could send them a message. han ying shakes himself out of his daydream and finishes his food. as he’s about to go upstairs, one of the waiters comes over and says there’s a man who wants to talk to him. han ying sees an unfamiliar older man across the room.

it’s bi changfeng in disguise. ‘you’re in danger,’ he says, blunt as always. ‘jin-wang got paranoid. he sent men after the two of you. they should be here any moment, but i tried to get here first. where’s—’ he doesn’t finish the question because han ying is already racing upstairs. when he reaches zhou zishu’s room, he pauses, and then hears a muffled cry. han ying slams the door open, and immediately hurtles himself across the room at the men from jin-wang’s guard who have clearly climbed in the window. zhou zishu is laying on the floor. there’s blood around him. han ying knocks one of the men back out the window, and bi changfeng takes care of the other.

zhou zishu isn’t conscious. there must have been poison in whatever the men used to hit him. it’s still shocking that they could have taken him off guard, but han ying doesn’t have time to worry about it. he needs to take zhou zishu somewhere safe before any more of jin-wang’s men find them. he tells bi changfeng to go back and get whoever he can out. bi changfeng laughs at him, says grimly that he already started, and tells him to take care of zhuangzhu before leaving. han ying doesn’t think, just picks zhou zishu up, staggers under his weight, and manages to sneak out the window himself. he doesn’t know where to go, until he does.

the fog is still there, thicker than ever. ‘wen-daren!’ han ying yells hoarsely. ‘i need your help! let us in!’ he doesn’t hear an answer but there’s a cold wind that blows past and then surrounds him for a moment. the fog parts in front of them, and instead of the slow disappearance from when they left, han ying simply charges in, heading straight to the house. he lays zhou zishu down on one of their abandoned makeshift beds and starts pulling at his clothes to find the wounds. wen kexing appears a moment later. he looks like he might yell first, but then he sees zhou zishu lying still between them and changes tack. ‘what do you need,’ he asks. han ying has discovered a deep wound on zhou zishu’s thigh, and what seems to be a broken arm. ‘do you have any medicines?’ wen kexing nods curtly and then disappears in a burst of cold wind.

the wound does have a trace of poison residue around it, and han ying is afraid to bind it without cleaning it first. he sets zhou zishu’s arm and binds it to a broken piece of wood from the house. wen kexing reappears with an armful of dried plants. ‘the wound is poisoned,’ han ying tells him. wen kexing nods, and begins ripping the herbs into small pieces and mixing them in a bowl. then he stiffens. ‘someone’s here. finish mixing these and apply them to the wound.’ he disappears once again. han ying finished the mixture and applies it, and presses a clean piece of cloth over it. zhou zishu coughs and wakes slightly. he asks what’s happening, and han ying tells him as quickly as possible. zhou zishu looks almost scared for once. there are sounds of men and weapons from outside. han ying forcibly stops zhou zishu from trying to stand up and help.

the sounds go away quickly. wen kexing reappears, looking exactly like he always does. ‘a-xu—’ he says and then stops. ‘thanks,’ says zhou zishu quietly. ‘ying’er,’ he says. ‘did you say bi-shu was going to get the others out?’ han ying nods. zhou zishu looks up at wen kexing hesitantly. ‘would you allow others to live here? we could make the village live again.’ wen kexing seems surprised. ‘you would stay?’ he asks. wen kexing sounds like a child. ‘yeah, lao wen,’ says zhou zishu. ‘i would stay.’ wen kexing looks at han ying. ‘you too?’ ‘i didn’t know you cared,’ han ying says, too surprised to realize how that might sound. ‘i do,’ wen kexing says earnestly. ‘of course i’ll stay,’ han ying answers. zhou zishu grabs his wrist and holds it tightly. ‘ying’er, can you get word to bi changfeng? tell him to bring— to bring the others here.’

and that’s how mini siji gets rebuilt in a haunted village, and zhou zishu and han ying get a ghost husband lol.

hiiii <3 what are your all time favorite bls and why? i need to fill up my to-watch list asap

oh, this ask made me ecstatic to the point i considered one of my moots sent it cause they know giving recs makes me happy 😄

what I'd constitute as faves isn't necessarily what i would usually recommend, to moots i mostly suggest shows and movies that i find unique in some way and that have left a good impression on me like i will knock you, kimi no koto dake mite itai, word of honor, fukou kun, the untamed, docchi mo docchi, seven days, itsay, msp, vice versa etcetcetc. it's not necessarily about perfect writing or acting even, it's about the piece of media provoking either lots of thoughts, emotions or both, having at least one unique trait i associate with it and just being enjoyable despite (or because of) its flaws! so that's the type of media i usually enjoy sharing with others.

now, it's infinitely easier for me to give recs based on any other criteria but "my personal faves" is such a subjective category (that im not even sure exists) that i had to cheat a bit - i went off of what couples make me go feral, what emotions the show title evokes and if i've revisited certain scenes. i don't do full rewatches for the most part but i sometimes go back to watch the main couples (the exception being waantul in between us, i know their scenes a hundred times better than winteam's lol) and most of the shows listed here have been revisited at least once 😗

Love Is Science? - NOT a bl, the pair in question are the second couple; i personally went through every episode looking for their scenes and then went through the cut on yt (and rightfully so, quite a few scenes were missing in that); i'm recommending you smth this inconvenient because i love Mark and Ou Wen so much. their personalities (they have personality for daysss), the chemistry (the hanger scene), their love and support for each other make me giddy. they carry their part so well you don't need much else, just watching them interact is enough. going through gifs now i got reminded of just how amazing the development of their relationship is to me. they're a delight and a half, enjoy them flustering each other 💖

To My Star Season 2: Our Untold Stories - now, i'm aware you have to see s1 first but when it comes to who makes me go feral, it's definitely Seojoon and Jiwoo and this happened mostly because of season 2, i didn't care for them much originally. this season explored an aspect of relationships i don't think i've seen explored anywhere else in a way that makes me still get in my feels whenever anything bout the show comes across my dash. it's angsty but so worth it. my boys have intense personal issues and even more intense love for each other, their personalities, way of thinking and chemistry are fascinating to me. the cuteness mixed with the heavier plot, the pacing, the smart writing, it's so nice. side note, binging both seasons at once wouldn't be that big of a challenge timewise in case you don't want a breather in between 😊 (gif from s1 because you can't watch them separately anyways)

Kieta Hatsukoi - a sweet light romcom for the most part, very entertaining, all of the characters are soo loveable, one of my all time fave girls in bl is here and she's everything <3 in regards to manga accuracy, the main events are all there but the order is all switched around yet the story still makes perfect sense! it's funny, it's sweet, Aoki and Ida are such an interesting pair and it's lovely seeing them figure out how to navigate this unexpected relationship

We Best Love: No. 1 For You - it's such a must watch! the passion these two have for each other and the chemistryyy will make you overlook the sheer absurdity of some of the plot; i also loved the 2 season format where the second season feels well planned, it's almost like one whole season cut in half. the emotional journey that Shu Yi and Shi De go on is so (melo)dramatic but also very touching because Sam and Yu act those emotions OUT, it's a pleasure just watching them interact (also Shu Yi is one of the few brats i adore dearly and i think it's not only because of the writing but Yu's incredible portrayal of the character)

Bad Buddy - i wasn't able to appreciate it for its wit because it was basically my first thai bl, i had no idea what expectations it was defying. nevertheless, i fell in love with it because it stands so well on its own! it's very funny, heartbreaking at times (reading analyses and meta on here made me realise how heavy the premise actually is) and insanely romantic (it caters to my idea of romance so well, the pining and protectiveness and flirting and devotion and-); also Pat and Pran have some amazing communication and mutual understanding, their bond is truly endearing and makes my heart ache if i think about it a bit too long

KinnPorsche - when it comes down to it, i am a very basic person. this show is just a ride, you gotta watch it for the pure entertanment value. there's always smth happening, that's for sure 😄of course chemistry, ofc handsome men all over the place yadayada but it'd be just that if not for the insane plotlines and humour, if you just accept that anything goes, you can have a blast with this show (but also hurt beautiful men finding comfort and love in a world of pain and betrayal>>)

Where Your Eyes Linger - though I can't make myself rewatch the heavier scenes, i love this one, the premise, the execution, it's all to my taste, the longing between these two is palpable (side note: i was getting emotional while searching for a gif but a bunch of the results were porn gifs so i was taken out of my feels multiple times lmao)

Utsukushii Kare - I'm way more normal about them now than before but this show truly makes you feel so many things, it's so smart and fantastic. Hira and Kiyoi's journey is beautiful and it embodies what i love seeing from japan's productions. they're just two lovely guys who are perfect for each other and shouldn't be let anywhere near the dating pool ❤️

Semantic Error - man, i love me some enemies to lovers, especially when both leads are Fools™️ for each other. the humour and pacing, the colourful side characters, Jaeyoung's charisma, his determination contrasting Sangwoo's inner battle..and, I know I'm becoming repetitive, the chemistry! there's a reason my guys won awards js

The End of the World with You - this show drove me insane, it's more of a one-time watch imo but i'm saying this because I was very focused on the main couple and they were what kept me watching (plus the suspense of course); it's a heavy heavy premise with the most controversial couple on this list but somehow it felt very light and exciting for the most part. I think their unconventional surroundings account for it, you don't get the typical chaos an apocalyptic show would display, it kind of feels calm even and it allows you to focus on the interpersonal relationships between the characters rather than on the expected terrors. the show fascinated me with the amazing acting and the dynamic between Ritsu and Masumi, I have a special spot for them <33 (no photo cause the limit was reached lol)

because deciding on faves is hard i'll leave this list at 10 shows, consider these just 10 of the many shows that are important to me in some way 💓

hopefully i suggested mostly things you haven't seen yet (though I went quite basic) <3 i need to know what you think of the shows, okay? and in case they don't do it for you (or, even better, they do and you come to trust me lol) feel perfectly welcome to send me some info about what you (don't) enjoy in terms of genre, tropes, episode length, actors etc.etc. and i'll dive into my lists hahah, it's super fun for me 💗

The small town of Diamond Edge was filled with people who had normal waterworks and then the heartbroken who were condemned to tear up blood after being rejected for their love.

He takes the same train as me, I feel myself tense up whenever he steps into the train cubicle. I hate the feeling of still having to see him everyday, I’m hoping with every inch of myself that he’s not attending the same university as me, I desperately want it to stop.

I watch him as he lets women take his seats being a gentleman towards them something I wouldn’t know. It’s not like he’ll notice me staring at him, I always wear sunglasses and a mask because I don’t think I can handle having to come face to face to him ever again. the feeling of humiliation fills me up as my mind starts to wander to 1 year ago, my mind goes blurry as my music blasting in my ears fills up my senses.

Exams were finally over, the time had come for seniors to leave the school grounds forever. my head turns towards the field as students gathered in their friend groups congratulating each other, the wind was blowing gently. It was time I had made up my mind, I slowly walked over to the field. The more closer I got towards his group felt like as if time was slowing down.

“Hey look who’s coming over here” the rude boy of our class chuckled, Xu Minghao the guy who hated people in general unless they were him the one who had his back turned to me, the one my world stopped for everytime I crossed him. he turned around with a small smile, I stopped. Will I able to say it? what if he rejects me? What if-

No! Alice you can do it!

My conscience called out me.

“Hello Jun l-“ I barely got the words out. Alice come on!

“Sorry?” His soft voice called out, I could’ve fainted right then and there.

“Jun I like you! I’ve liked you since the day you walked into our school with your long hair flowing in the wind” I finally spoke, I looked around me, everyone on the field froze once I had spoken I slightly cringed at my confession.

“I’m sorry who are you?” He let out slightly confused.

“Jun w-we’ve been in the same seat row for 4 years how-“

“Oh right your the quiet girl who sits in class with her head down and sits alone at lunch” he smirked down at me whilst taking a step towards me.

“did you fall for me silly girl? Sorry to break it to you but I’m not interested in social rejects.” I felt my heart clench as he said this. Am I really a social reject?

Humiliation took over my body, I felt cold tears run down my face, I wiped my tears and I saw the red liquid on my hand, my feet were planted I couldn’t move, I heard everyone around me gasp.

“What the hell?! She’s tearing blood!”

I came back to my senses I looked with red liquid blurring my vision, everyone had fear painted on their faces, I-I’m a monster, I gotta get out of here.

Alice run!

And that’s what I did I ran and I ran not looking back.

The train conductor called out, I grabbed my bag and waited for the train to come to a stop as I lifted myself up off the seat bolting it straight for the door. I walked quickly trying to avoid him, I quickly looked over my shoulder and could see him walking behind me.

Oh shit…

I start to walk even faster, until I heard a voice call out and I stopped in my tracks. “Hey excuse me!”. I kept my back turned towards him not having the courage to face him that is until he came face to face to me. “I saw the ID tag on your backpack, you are attending DEUOTA too right?” fuck why did I put my ID out in the open?? I mentally cursed myself. “Can you lead me towards the university I don’t know where I am going…” he spoke obviously flustered rubbing the back of his head, He was still handsome I’ll give him that.

“S-sorry I don’t know what your talking about, I-I have to go” I let out tripping over my words not having the strength to continue on the conversation, I apologized and walked off leaving him in disbelief.

You may think I’m being over dramatic, but I mentally do not have the strength to face him, he caused me this illness, that will never go away. I have to live with this defect everyday for the rest of my life. While he lives his life in peace and harmony, and here I am suffering because of him.

I hate him.

You practically collapsed to the floor by the side of your bed. You tried to draw in a deep breath but couldn’t quite manage it. It felt like you could only draw in half a breath and when you tried to release it, it was almost as though it was stuck in your throat. A gentle tap at the door made you look up quickly.

“Liebling?”

Damn, it was Zemo. You had hoped that your escape to your room had gone unnoticed but apparently it hadn’t been. When you didn’t answer Zemo knocked on the door again and said,

“I’m coming in.”

The door opened slowly and you couldn’t help but smile at the action. Even though he was concerned for you, you could hear the worry in his voice, he still respected your privacy. He frowned when he saw you sitting on the floor and shut the door softly behind him before approaching you slowly. You felt your breaths coming quicker and Zemo wasted no time in moving next to you.

“Y/n, listen to me.”

He raised a hand and after a moment’s hesitation he put it on top of yours. He gave it a soft a squeeze and you couldn’t help but give him a shaky smile. Count on Zemo on always knowing what to do.

“Shh,” he said, “Focus on my voice. Focus on what I’m saying. Focus on my breathing.”

You tried to copy Zemo’s actions but despite his best efforts all that happened was the feeling of your chest getting tighter. You slumped against Zemo’s chest as your eyes fluttered shut and everything wen black.

You let out a soft groan as your eyes slowly opened. You winced as he bright light blinded you and you raised a hand to cover them.

“Easy,” said Zemo, “Take it slowly.”

“Wh… Zemo.”

A warm hand appeared at your shoulder and slowly helped you to sit up. You opened your eyes and Zemo handed you a glass of water. You quickly took a gulp but Zemo pulled the glass away.

“What did I say about slowly,” he said, “Don’t want you choking.”

“What happened?” you asked

“You had an anxiety attack.”

“Did I?” you hid your head in your hands, “Fuck. I’m… I’m sorry you had to see that.”

“You have nothing to apologise for.”

Zemo pried your hands away from your face. You could feel your cheeks heating up at how close the two of you were.

“Still,” you muttered, “I’m sorry for putting you in this position.”

“It is one I am used to dealing with.”

“O… oh.”

You bit you lip and shifted awkwardly. You were an idiot not to realise what Zemo was implying. Zemo stood up and offered you his hand. At your confused look he said,

“The floor is not the most comfortable place to recover from an anxiety attack.”

“Right.”

You hadn’t realised that you were still on the floor. You stumbled to your feet and Zemo wrapped an arm around your waist to steady you. It felt strange being held in his arms and yet felt strangely alright. You rest your head on his chest and he said,

“Let me get you a cup of tea. Everything always seems a bit better after one.”

“Yes, thank you.”

As Zemo led you out of the bedroom you couldn’t help but note that he hadn’t removed his arm from your wait. Not that you were complaining of course.
