Today is "Bake Cookies Day" and we're PUMPED.
The first image is from our copy of the Rumford Cook Book and has some recipes for Hermits, Oatmeal Cookies, Sand Tarts, and Cocoanut Cream Cookies. These recipes look pretty easy, just don't forget your Rumford Baking Powder!
The second image is a print advertisement for Saran Wrap, a product of the Dow Chemical Company. The advertisement features a plate of cookies being covered in Saran Wrap, which is perfect for today!
Image citations: Farmer, Fannie Merritt. “The Rumford Cook Book.” Providence, Rhode Island: Rumford Chemical Works, circa 1910.

Spotlight: Great British Baking Show Premiere!
Today is the premiere of series 13 (or collection 10 as we know it here in the US) of the Great British Baking Show (called the Great British Bake Off in the UK) here in the US on Netflix (it premiered Tuesday in the UK). Some of us (me) are obsessed with the show and look forward to watching the new episode every Friday night. I have also been known to rewatch all the old seasons on a yearly basis!
But Alice, you’re thinking, why are you sharing a German recipe book when it’s the Great British Bake Off?? There are reasons! Reason number one is that one of last year’s standout contestants, Jürgen, was from the Black Forest region of Germany and he was one of my favorite bakers. Reason number two is that last season in the tent the bakers had to get through German Week, though Jürgen sadly did not win Star Baker that week.
This cookbook is Mader’s German Cooking and Baking, which was printed by Wetzel Brothers, Inc. in Milwaukee, WI in 1977 and includes recipes from the Mader family of the well-known and still extant Mader’s Restaurant in downtown Milwaukee. It contains recipes for all parts of a meal, but we’re focusing on the baked goods, because Bake Off! In it you’ll find recipes similar to many bakes seen on the GBBS, like cinnamon rolls, stollen, and cheesecake.
If you haven’t watched GBBS, I highly recommend it! Seasons are relatively short at 10 episodes, and there are already 9 seasons (plus holiday specials) available on Netflix. I love the camaraderie among the bakers, the silliness of the hosts (Noel is my favorite), and the pickiness of the esteemed judges.
Ready, set, bake!

I'm actually obsessed with media tie-in cook books. Because they range from a legitimate attempt to explore the food and culture of a fictional world to the lamest cash grab with mediocre chicken recipes called shit like "Turnip Troll Roasted Phoenix Wings."
