Raiders of the Lost Ark is so damn good
Well my Spielbergqathon has entered the 80's ,with one of the most iconic action franchises of the 80's ,the Indiana Jones series ,starting with Raiders of the Lost Ark
In this 1981 film Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is an archeologist /adventurer who is out to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis do
So Indiana Jones is a childhood favorite franchise for me.I actually dont know which Indiana Jones film is my favorite cause as a kid ,if I watched one,I HAD to watch all three (This is before Kingdom of the Chrystal Skull ) . So what makes this watch through unique ,Is I will be viewing the Indiana Jones films in the context of Spielbergs filmography instead of as a whole .So happy to report of the Spielberg films I have watched so far .....Its at the head of the pack
Raiders is just such a fun film ,it is a thrillride .The film is full of great action.Like if you love good action,this film is for you..Like the famous boulder scene,where our hero is outrunning a boulder......There is a shootout in a burning bar ,a fun chase through the streets (With an amazing bait and switch joke ),a fist fight with a burly mechanic and ana amazing car vs Horse chase .You also get great set pieces like a tomb full of snakes (I am not a snake person so that scene always creeped me out ),Indy being chased by a boulder and of course the finale
THe film also has elements of the supernatural and that was always an appeal to me of this series.Its funny there isnt anything too mystical till the end ,but it doesnt feel unearned ,because the way the Ark is talked about ,you know something is gonna happen.I wont spoil the finale,but it is awesome and frankly terrifying ,it feels like something out of a horror film
We have three main villains .The least interesting is Colonel Dietrich ,Wolf Kahler does a good job being the voice of authority but of the three villains I kind of forget he is in the movie .Belloq is really our main villain ,a rival archologist to Indy .A oppurtunistic man ,he is in it to observe the power of the Ark .Paul Freeman is perfect in the role ,he is a great contrast to Indy ,the refined villain in white suites who firmly believes in greater powera to our more scruffy skeptical hero .Also love his piercing eyes and the excitement in his voice when he describes the Ark as a "Radio to God ".The most memorable villain however is Ronald Laceys performance as Toht .He's actually not in the film alot and doesnt say much ,but good lord is he creepy . Toht is a sadistic Gestapo agent ,LAcey is able to capture this slimey quality ,that is almost Peter Lorre esque (REally brings to mind Lorre in All Through The Night ).
The supporting cast is all great ,with memorable appearences by Alfred Molina (In his first role )George Harris and William Hootkins .Denholm Elliot brings a warmth as Museum curator Brody . The best supporting character has to be Sallah ,Indys friend played by John Rhyse Davies , he brigngs a sense of levity and warmth to the film and to be frank.....Hes the character who I think has the best lines ,my favorite being "Aasps! Very dangerous.....You go first."Plus everytime he sings it just makes me smile
Karen Allen plays Indy's love interest Marion .Theres a toughnbess and sense of humor to her that makes her stand out .My favorite scene with her is where she is getting drunk with Belloq ,while she is hiding a knife so she can plan an escape
An now we get to Indy who I can best describe as James Bond but combined with a Humphrey Bogart character .He bit of a scruffier and scrappier action hero and Harrison Ford was kind of the perfect choice ,being tough but able to convincingly look like he is in danger ,which just makes us root for him even more
OVerall this is such a damn good action movie ,highly reccomended

Favorite Fantasy Villains part 2 : Dark Lords
So when it comes to Fantasy ,I am not a fan of the Dark Lord trope .Most of the time I find big nebulous evil guys kind of dull .I dont like Voldemort ,I dont like Sauron,I dont like Ozai.However there are a few I do like ,either they lean so into the Dark Lord thing or they play withthe idea
10.Gannondorf from Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
The villain I think of when I think Dark Lord . The pure cockyness of "II am Gannondorf and soon I will rule the world " seals him a spot on the list
9.Hades from Hercules
I love the idea of playing an evil god like a sleazy agent or salesman
8.Evil Genius from Time Bandits
Dark Lord played for comedy by the brilliant David Warner
7.Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty
A lady who takes evil very seriously but what I like is she is very miserable unless someone else is miserable
6 .Nome King from Return To Oz
What I like abour the Nome King is he has a "Not my fault" mentality and he has a facade of friendliness and reasnoability,....Unless things dont go his way
5.SkekSo from Dark Chrystal Age of Resistance
I love SkekSo cause he seems like a standard evil overlord ......But when you break him down he is a very shortsighted and very unhinged leader
4.Lord of Darkness from Legend
Darkness is on the surface a standard devil figure being ultra strong ,feared and powerful......But he is actually the son of a (Presumbly) much more powerful demon ,and has the personality of a lovesick broody teen .An interesting play on the Dark Lord character
3.David Lo Pan from Big Trouble in Little China
A cursed sorcerer who is now a crime boss but seeks to return to his former glory .Legendary actor James Hong not only nails the humor and menace of Lo Pan ,but embues him with a sense of sadness and lonliness
2.Thulsa Doom from Conan the Barbarian
Played masterfully by the legend James Eaqrl Jones ,Doom is enigmatic ,with a feeling of superiority and a major god complex .I also think he is one of the few dark lords who has a fascinating dynamic with the protagonist ,as asks "When I am gone,what would your world be without me ?"
1.Aku from Samurai Jack
Like Thulsa Doom,this is where I love his dynamic with the hero Aku is pure evil,a dangerous tyranical force of pure malice......Who as the series progresses grows more and more insane as Jack continues to survive everything he throws at him .This is a creature who has conquered the world,killed and enslaved countless people .....But cant kill this one man

⭐ for anything you want to talk about? please?
Ok I was really really breaking my head over what I was going to talk about (sudden "as soon as someone asks about x all previous memories/thoughts about x have been erased" syndrome) but some scrolling through my own AO3 reminded me of my forgotten masterpiece, the one that got away, my magnus opum of oneshots that nobody seems to appreciate, in short: My Roommate from Hell.
As very little people know, Good Omens is my most favourite book in the very very wide world. I own three (3) copies. I have read each of these three (3) copies multiple (multiple) times. Good Omens is the very first book I put in any new bookshelf, and the very last book I take out when I move. I don't even know why I love it so much, I just do. Naturally, I had conflicting feelings about the show (not so much the show itself which was very nice, but more about the fandom interpretation of Az and Crowley shifting towards the Show Versions TM and also Neilman word of God changes in content and also I am very not a fan of the Bentley playing music that is not Queen but oh well. Rant for another day.) but I did tremendously enjoy all the "10 years later" style headcanons that were popping up. In particular, there was this one post making the rounds about Warlock and Adam meeting and I, at my heart a chaos gremlin supreme, saw the chaos potential in that and HAD to do something with it. And thus, My Roommate from Hell was born. Well, more like chrystalized, I had the Idea for this in like,,,2016.
My favourite part of this fic is actually two parts, namely a) being outrageous and still counting as Canon Continuation and b) footnotes. I fucking love footnotes. I ESPECIALLY love outrageously long footnotes that contribute nothing to the actual narrative. It wasn't always easy to think of something to say in a footnote, actually. Like, I pretty much put one where the vibe was right, but expecially footnote no. 6 and no. 2 gave me some real trouble. No. 2 beacuse I originally wanted the couplet Warlock quptes to be a limeric, and I also wanted to write that limeric in the footnote. I was, unfortunately, not very good at coming up with suitably disturbing lyímerics. No. 6 gave me trouble for similar reasons, namely: What passage in the Bible can be altered to be insulting enought to get someone kicked out of a lecture and also how do I a) keep this short (original draft was about 3x the length it is now) and b) do this without having to buy a King James bible and also read it cover to cover. Then I remembered some profs are dicks. The rest is history.
The actual story, namely Warlock moving in with Adam or vice versa, is basically a thinly veiled letter of contempt to any other fandom interpretation of this sort of thing happening (there are many. do what you want but also you are wrong and my version is the only correct version. i am joking obviously. (i am not)). I broadly agree with fandom saying Warlock and his parents don't have the best relationship. I do NOT agree with them being deliberately cruel or overly homophobic, I read them as just this kinda very rich person brand of neglect. Also of course Adam and Warlock are going to Uni, and of course it is Oxbridge (I did so much research for this fic. I have to do my masters in Oxbridge now or my impeccable knowledge of the uni website will be for nothing.), Adam because you need The Credentials if you really wanna change something on a big scale, and Warlock because of The Reputation. Also yes, Warlocks parents did pay for their sons grades to be altered (brownie points for anyone who knows what scandal this is referencing). Also, I put a lot of thought into their housing. Jesus College is a thing, and it's kind of a reference to Jesus technically being Adams....Uncle? The vibe is your chill older family member making you sit at the kids table and asking you if you're having fun when they walk past you on their way to get a new beer.
Also a thinly veiled lettre of contempt to fanon Aziraphale is my Aziraphale. Series!Aziraphale is very nice and very well played but listen....in the book. the mans a bitch. I say this with love but he is an absolute stone cold cutthroat fucking bitch. Since the series came out fanon interpretation is very....soft, which is also ok, but. He's just a bitch, and the people may have forgotten, but I certainly haven't!
Anyways, this is the surface of a WHOLE LOT of stuff I have to say about this fic. If you want to hear some more, just leave me another question!
(Also fun fact, a few people here heard me read a section of this out loud during a Gay Folly Saturady Night Out, and have since asked me to make a podfic. I am trying. It is NOT going well.)
