4. Are there any writers that inspire you?

Just about anything I read will inspire me in one way or another. In the course of writing When the Longing Returns I've directly taken inspiration from Angela Carter, Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell. The last was especially influential on Chapter 4.

9. Which Characters do you find difficult to write

So far I've only really written 5 characters (Erik, Christine, Raoul, Meg and Madame Giry) and none of them have been particularly challenging, because I've always known exactly what I want them to do in the scenes they're in. Like they all have their little challenges situationally.

With Erik my main concern is finding the right balance of self-confidence and self-loathing. I determined early on that i didn't believe ALW Erik to be defeatist--somehow he always manages to cling on to hope. So my gauge is "Does he sound too much like Edward Cullen in Midnight Sun? If yes, dial it back.

But I think I would say the one that will be most challenging in the future will be Madame Giry. And there it isn't so much not knowing how to write her, and more just finding difficulty in actually articulating it. There's some big scenes with her coming up one of which I wrote all the way back in Ch. 3 and its one of my favourite things I've written, but it was also quite challenging.

25. Have you ever daydreamed about side adventures/spin-offs from your fic? Tell us about them!

No so much side adventures, more like outtakes--scenes that take place in the universe of the fic birthday just don't fit the trajectory of the story. And they're mostly smutty.

31. Do you have any OCs? Tell us about them!

Now are we talking OC's for a piece of media or Original characters for Original works?

If the latter, not really no. If the former, my OC for Twilight, Ada, is very near and dear to my heart, to the point where I have a whole side-blog for her (@crookdeclipses).

I have always had a self insert for Twilight, but when I first came up with her she was called Audrey and she was very thinly written. I just didn't have a good enough scope of knowledge or emotional experience to come up with a character that add anything to the Cullen family dynamic. She read kind of just there. So when I embraced the Twilight Renaissance, I decided to completely strip her down and rebuild her from scratch. Just about the only thing she retained from the I original incarnation is her hair colour and her car. Audrey Cullen became Adeliza Charlotte Wakefield Cullen (Ada for short). I placed her backstory in Regency England (as I was coming off of a major Jane Austen kick) with the basis of her vampire origin being what if Marianne Dashwood's story ended.... badly? Like, at the foot of a cliff badly?

That background grew to involve her fiancé disappearing in action during the Napoleanic Wars who she then discovers (after she becomes a vampire) was actually alive, and an obsessive vampire creator who's affection she was not ready to receive chasing her across Eurasia (this aspect of her story was added to explain the numerous vampire covens of OC's I came up with back when Breaking Dawn came out and International Vampires became an option). The obsessive vampire creator (he's called Jonathan) was an idea I had because I wanted to explore Stephenie Meyers concept of "vampires can only fall in love once". Namely what happens when you fall in love as a vampire and the object of your affection doesn't reciprocate. Things don't end well for poor Jonathan (my heart goes out to the poor guy. I really feel like I did him dirty.)

Just realized I have a Mr. Darcy complex; every fictional character I’ve ever been interested by has been framed with characteristics developed in Mr. Darcy.

Edward Cullen:

literally stays a virgin until he fucking married Bella. Cannot stand her at the beginning but is actually completely obsessed with her.

Christian Grey:

(lmao he’s based off of Edward Cullen but whatever) hates human interaction outside of sex until he meets Anastasia Steele. He then goes out of his way to woo her, even when it’s against his nature.

Chuck Bass:

The irreverent bad boy, nobody can help him, except Blair Waldorf. Literally has no redeeming qualities until him an Blair get together and he starts on his character development track.

Edward Fairfax Rochester:

At first he doesn’t like Jane eyre but he falls in love with her and gives her everything in the world. He only loves her (even though he’s got his crazy dungeon wife*, *but we won’t talk about that) and wanted her to have everything she wanted.

Grant Ward:

Oh, my poor badly written character who deserved so much more than what he was given. But, he’s another case of hardened bad boy who was only affected by Skye. I could talk for ages about how unfair his send off was.

So yeah. That’s great. I have a fckn type. And it’s blatantly obvious in real life too.

Note

Bella's character is a SMeyer self insert so the name she would have picked would have been just like one of those Smeyer picked for her other characters (especially the Cullens). Elizabeth would have been perfect even without the connection to Edward's mother's name. It's a literay character to. Other examples, Eleanor, Caroline/a, and I wish Victoria and Charlotte if they hadn't already been used....

Eh. I don't see Bella as a smeyer self-insert so much as a "girl reading this" self-insert (at least, that was smeyer's intention) but stephenie kinda failed to recognize that her own experiences were not universal.

[eta: for anyone curious abut this, I should add that smeyer has gone on record saying she would never name a real child renesmee]

also, like. as someone who has researched this pretty extensively, I don't think Twilight characters' names are necessarily reflective of smeyer's personal name taste at all (except bella, whose name is what stephenie herself says she would have named a daughter.) a huge chunk of them are named after family members and people in her life—heidi, emily, seth, victoria, jacob, paul—whose names she certainly didn't choose (though I believe she did name a son after her brother seth, iirc.) and still others are names she got from historical records and stuff (many of the vampires, + all the actual quileute surnames she looked up and stole.)

so I thoroughly agree with @panlight that in a story with consistent and thoughtful characterization, bella swan's baby name taste should have leaned classic and literary rather than modern and invented.

side note, I do think renesmee's name is colored a lot by mormon influences—making up new names/naming children some weird bastardization of parents' or grandparents' names is very common in the mormon community (see: "stephenie.") she also uses a lot of christian biblical names, but this goes back to both the historical sources and the real (mormon) people she names characters after.

What are some of your favorite alternative names for Renesme?

If we're talking funny fandom nicknames, I think Renameme (re-name-me) is my favorite because it looks really close AND makes the point.

Resume will never not be funny.

Saw Renuzit once; that made me laugh. It's got those sharp N and Z sounds like Renesmee.

At the library where I work a family called Renzelman used to come in, that always had big Renesmee energy.

And now in the Age of Covid whenever I'm reading the news and see the drug "Remdesivir" mentioned, I think "Renesmee."

And if you meant like what I think she should have been named, Elizabeth Rose. Carlie would also be fine. Meadow. Melody. Charlotte (for Charlie). Even something like Claire Luna for Clair de Lune or Isla Esme would have made more sense and felt more meaningfully in character. I just don't accept the premise that she needed a one-of-a-kind made-up name when the alternative was Edward Jacob/Junior "E.J." Cullen, the least whimsical and imaginative name possible. Making up a magical name just is not the Bella Swan vibe. E.J. absolutely is.

Penelope, with Pen as a nickname (Pen means Swan, from what I have read)

Svana (Means Swan, and is unique as hell)

Carlie (For Charlie Swan and Carlisle Cullen) [Literally just make her middle name her first name]

Elizabeth Renee (Literally Edward and Bella's biological Mom's names)

Charlotte Esme (Female form of Charlie and Edward's adoptive Mom's names) [I couldn't think of a female version of Carlisle, tbh]

Juliet Elizabeth (For Bella's favorite book character and Edward's Mom)

I'm sure I'll think of more, but, this is all I have right now.

Don't get me wrong, I do like the name Renesmee, but the name has been ruined by that god awful nickname(and spelling if I'm to be honest). Literally; Ren, Renny, some form of the name May (Mee, Mae, etc), or literally just keeping her full name would have been better than Ness & Nessie. But I digress.

Looking For Descendants Of Henry Trotter (1837-1911) Singapore

Henry Trotter,Actg.Resident Councillor of Penang from(24 Oct.1891-31 Oct.1892/16 Sept.1894-7 Dec.1895).Born in 1837.Son of Alexander Trotter of Tydenham,Gloucestershire.He became an private secretary to the Governor of Dominica in 1852.In 1859,he received a clerkship in the office of Commander-in-chief(Duke of Cambridge) at the House Guards.Later he appointed as Deputy Comptroller of the Convict Establishment in Bermuda.Next he was transfered to Ceylon as Inspector of Post Offices and later became Postmaster General.In 1871,he was appointed as Postmaster General of Straits Settlements.He became Auditor-General Of Straits Settlements in 1882.He married 1stly to Almeria Symonds Bridgwater,2ndly to Emma May Lewis Gordon and 3rdly to Helena Conduit Vale.He died in 1911,Alphington Court,Jersey Island.His issue:-
