Candidly Cline by Kathryn Ormsbee
Tumblr media
Today's sapphic book of the day is Candidly Cline by Kathryn Ormsbee!
Summary: "A must-read for fans of Julie Murphy and Ashley Herring Blake, this queer coming-of-age story from critically acclaimed author Kathryn Ormsbee sings with heart, warmth, and hope.
Born in Paris, Kentucky, and raised on her gram’s favorite country music, Cline Alden is a girl with big dreams and a heart full of song. When she finds out about a young musicians’ workshop a few towns over, Cline sweet-talks, saves, and maybe fibs her way into her first step toward musical stardom.
But her big dreams never prepared her for the butterflies she feels surrounded by so many other talented kids—especially Sylvie, who gives Cline the type of butterflies she’s only ever heard about in love songs.
As she learns to make music of her own, Cline begins to realize how much of herself she’s been holding back. But now, there’s a new song taking shape in her heart—if only she can find her voice and sing it."

a sapphic lit primer 🌸
also known as, an opportunity to insist you read my favourites
if you’ve ever found yourself wanting to read more sapphic books, but not quite sure where to start, let this be the post for you! if you’re looking for even more sapphic books, i hope you find something in here too.
there are a few books on here i’ve not read, that i wanted to include to raise awareness of them, more than anything. those are marked by *. as such, you will probably also see a fair few more well known books and authors missed off (but i promise i know about them!).
this is not meant to be at all exhaustive! it’s a collection of sapphic books that i’ve read and would rec, meaning there are still tons more out there. & you can find some of those more at @sapphicreadsdb, readsrainbow (which i co-run with @tenderpotter), sapphiclitbot on twitter & my list of every sapphic book i’ve read.
as ever, this was meant to be a relatively short post. haha.
(i promise i did put links on this post, but for some reason those aren’t working on the blog page. dashboard version seems fine, i think.)

Not after what happened with Chaz Wilson. But that was ages ago, when Luis’s parents were in high school; it would never happen today, right? He’s determined to find a way to give his LGBTQ friends the respect they deserve (while also not…

I really appreciated the song lyrics in Candidly Cline. Most of the time I don't really care for poetry or lyrics in books. It's often just not very strong. And the first lyrics Cline wrote were a little shaky, but they had potential. And it was really a treat to watch her and Sylvie do draft after draft and improve on it each time until it was a song I would listen to over and over again just to appreciate the lyrics.
And then at the end with her new first draft, again a little shaky but full of potential! It was just masterfully done!

Candidly Cline by Kathryn Ormsbee
But now, there’s a new song taking shape in her heart—if only she can find her voice and sing it.

To be fair to Cline she was never told she was supposed to be watching her grandmother and purposely kept in the dark about the extent of her grandmother's alzheimers. How was she supposed to know that she couldn't leave her grandmother, an adult woman, alone for one evening?

I decided to read the first page of Candidly Cline to see if it caught my interest and so far, yeah, but what really gets me is that the pages are somehow softer than other books. How did they do that?

Candidly Cline is nice so far, but my biggest complaint is that it took 108 pages to discover whether or not Cline was actually writing songs before she took the workshop.
And I feel like the answer- that she's been using other songs as a base for her own- is really interesting information.
It wouldn't have taken much to reveal this early on. Just a single line mentioning writing notebooks when her room was described. Or a short paragraph about her feeling inspired to write after listening to a song.
We've been treated to SO MANY paragraphs about her listening to music, but barely any about her playing it and none about her writing it.

I think its interesting how Candidly Cline mentions everyone's skin color when describing them; not just the characters who aren't white.
