Thank you! Not sure how new counts as newer, but the newest I know of are Every Bird a Prince by Jenn Reese, The Trouble with Robots by Michelle Mohrweis and A-Okay by Jarad Greene. However, there are two more coming up: Just Lizzie by Karen Wilfrid, which will be out in November, and Reel Love by Nilah Magruder, which doesn't yet have a public pub date.

I will be at the American Library Association conference in Washington DC this weekend! I am doing two panels and three signings within the conference (which is ticketed and quiet expensive) but I am also doing one book talk/signing which is open to the public. All the details below the cut.
ALA Panel: Friday Comics Discussion Forum: Comics Challenges
● Date/Time: Friday, June 24, 1:45 - 3:00 pm
● Location: Washington Convention Center, 146B
● Moderated by Matthew Noe (outgoing president of the GNCRT)
● Panelists include: Amie Wright, Eric Carpenter (BGNC), Jack Phoenix (ChalCom) and Maia Kobabe
Event Description: In the last few years, comics have experienced some of the highest numbers of bans since the 1950s. To meet this challenge, GNCRT’s newest committee has created a Toolkit on Preparing For & Addressing Comic Book Bans, Censorship, and Challenges in Libraries. During this session, the Committee will present their Toolkit as well as findings from their recent survey of 100+ schools and libraries on comics censorship. We will be joined in this panel by award-winning–and challenged–comics creators.
ALA Panel: Identity and Coming of Age in Comics Panel
● Date/Time: Saturday, June 25, 11 am - 12 pm
● Location: Washington Convention Center, 145B
● Moderator: Matthew Noe
● Panelists: Tri Vuong, Jadzia Axelrod, Jarad Greene, Claribel Ortega, Rose Bousamra, and Maia Kobabe
Description: Growing up is hard. Whether it's struggling with acne, learning to love your hair, or fighting against what the world expects you to be, the trials of teenage life resonate with everyone. In this panel, we hear from some of today’s comics creators who are bringing these experiences to the page and explore together what comics can offer readers struggling with their identity.
Three signings at the Oni Press booth:
Saturday June 25, 1pm - 1:45pm- Oni Press Booth #1509
Sunday June 26, 3pm - 3:45pm- Oni Press Booth #1509
Monday June 27, 12pm - 12:30pm- Oni Press Booth #1509
And one event open to the public:
Politics and Prose Bookstore (5015 Washington Ave NW, Washington DC, 20008) on Sunday June 26 from 5-6pm EST. I'll be in conversation with Kathleen Breitenbach. Kathleen is the Chair of the Rainbow Round Table, the teen librarian at Hamilton Township Public Library in New Jersey, former chair of Rainbow Booklist Committee and Stonewall Book Awards Mike Morgan and Larry Romans Children’s and Young Adult Literature Award Committee, avid reader of queer YA, an aroace enby, disabled, and neurodivergent.

Godzilla Decklist Series: Biollante
Tumblr media
Welcome to the first in a new decklist series here on Command Tower focusing on an ongoing project of mine. I’ve been a fan of Godzilla and kaiju movies for just as long as I’ve been into Magic, and so when the Godzilla series was first unveiled as part of the Ikoria set treatment, I was very excited. Since the set has come out, I’ve been in the process of building a Commander deck for each of the unique kaiju represented on a legendary creature card, and now that I have a few of them finished, I thought I’d share them here on the blog.
Today we’ll be looking at my decklist for Biollante, the kaiju version of the White-Black-Green legendary creature Nethroi. The antagonist kaiju of the 1989 film aptly titled Godzilla vs. Biollante, this creature is a man-made hybrid of Godzilla’s own cells and genetic information from a species of rose, and after being defeated in its original beautiful and melancholic Rose Form, it revives as a massive reptilian maw atop an enormous, misshapen mass of intertwined vines and roots. True to that idea, this deck utilizes Biollante’s unique mutation trigger to manipulate the graveyard and return a multitude of powerful creatures to the battlefield. By filling the yard with creatures that have zero power until they enter play, this deck can effectively bypass the restriction of its Commander’s ability and reanimate many more bodies and much more power than it might seem at first glance.
Tumblr media
In the early turns, Biollante’s deck gets started by preparing the graveyard for her arrival. Cards like Jarad's Orders and Buried Alive quickly build up a presence of potential reanimations, and when backed up by early creatures like Fauna Shaman or Mindless Automaton that can pitch any higher-cost creatures trapped in your hand, it’s easy to get a head start on the later gameplan. Ideally, a card like Old Stickfingers or Wrenn and Seven will let you really get a leg up, quickly pushing for more value.
Because Biollante specifically looks at the power of the creatures in the graveyard, it’s possible to cheat the system a bit by utilizing cards that have zero power outside the battlefield. Cards such as Phantom Nishoba, Sekki, Seasons' Guide, and Multani are all powerful bodies that have zero power until they come into play, and so when Biollante looks at them in the yard, they don’t add anything to her total. As an added bonus, cards like these are amazing to mutate Biollante onto as well as she reaps the bonus of their +1/+1 counters or abilities that increase power.
Despite utilizing creatures that apply counters to themselves and each other, this deck isn’t really interested in manipulating those counters, so there are only a few pieces that interact with them once they’re in place. Most of the cards that do this are in here for other reasons, such as Yawgmoth's ability to draw cards and get creatures from play back into the yard or Kalonian Hydra and Ghave having zero power for Biollante's trigger. For the most part, the plan is to push for a lasting presence over moving the pieces around too much. Once the board is set up in this deck’s favor, it’s pretty easy to stay in the lead - traditional boardwipes are mostly ineffective against this list as Biollante can simply bring everything back again. Exile based wipes are a bigger problem, but the majority of them can be handled by a few creatures in the list that can sacrifice each other, allowing you to place your best options back in the yard for another round before they’re blown away. The new uberwipe Farewell is still a problem here, but if the deck gets set up quickly enough, it can deal with the players most likely to be running it to keep itself safe.
Overall, this is a fun and fast list that keeps coming back for more once things start going its way. It has the tools to defend itself simply by continuing to play to its gameplan, and its aggressive go-wide playstyle makes it fun to pop off with and watch the gears mesh into place. Biollante is one of my favorite of the Godzilla kaiju stable, and this deck really showcases her as the central piece of the puzzle.

Writing Exercise 2- POV
Hey there! We did a little more practice on switching POVs. As usual, we'd love to see you add on with your own swapped-POV version of a story :D - Mod Espie
Purple- Espie
Green- Dora
Pink - FloralShirt
The café erupts into pandemonium. John, hunched over a black coffee, eyes glued to a newspaper that he hasn’t turned in two hours, notices this fact when a waiter elbows him in the face, arms raised high as her legs dance around in a panic. Dropping the scalding cup sharply among the six others sat around him, he jerks his head up to the sight of broken glass and a spilling buffet trailing drunkenly along the ground. As he follows it with his eyes, they snap to a cornered, spitting and angry blur, held back by fearful trays and accusing spatulas. The ferret, in all its 40 cm glory, reminds him then of medieval depictions of bears, arms high and clawing, jaws wide and snapping. The speed at which it darts about reminds him of the length of floor to the exit, in all its 10 metre glory. He peers hesitantly past the tiles, sharp and slippery, to the crowd pressing at the door, and on to the bystanders peeking in the shaded windows. Pressing further into the comforting enclosure he had picked, now feeling rather trapped by the same feature that soothed him, he begins to rather regret picking today to try and overcome his agoraphobia.
“Oo…ah…wah?!?” the waitress wasn’t at her most articulate - but then again, no one would be, when surprised by a panicking ferret dashing through their feet.Internally though, she was much more calm than the instinctual yelp might have suggested. At first, of course, pure muscle memory had to take over, as she danced on her legs, shifting the centre of balance so that she dropped the least amount of things in her near-stumble. As she steadied herself on the nearest table, she could see that the kitchen staff seemed to have the situation contained, hemming in as they did the ferret in one corner of the cafe, using their trays and spatulas to keep themselves outside of bite-range. Of course - they’d just had their animal safety refresher training. The thought calmed her down immensely. The cafe’s patrons, too, seemed to have mostly begun to settle back down. One guy, though, was still hunched with his feet up on his seat, eyes darting back and forth towards the exit, as if he was about to bolt out at any moment. “Um… sir, are you alright?” she tried to get his attention without startling him too much.
The room was filled with sounds of laughter and non-stop conversations. As Mamy cut the knife through her birthday cake, Ogie came up unexpectedly and shoved her cake slice onto Mary’s face. Ogie let out a hearty laugh, with just the slightest hint of mean spirit in her voice. Mary glanced around the room, observing the reactions of her guests. Shebby instinctively covered her mouth in shock, looking around before their eyes met. Jarad howled with his hands on his hips like he had just heard the funniest joke in the world. His voice, like Ogie’s, rang out awkwardly through the uncomfortable silence. Mamy flexed up every fibre of her being not to glare at the two of them and laughed in unison, followed by small chuckles from those still confused.
Ogie was a short statured woman with a smile like a viper. She was good at what she did, and she did what she was good at. On meetings with her family - that is, birthdays, funerals and Christmases, that meant stealing the spotlight - and keeping it. The bustling conversation, the lazy flow of smoke from waxy, melting candles, the brilliant grin on Mary’s face. It bored her - worse, it annoyed her. Mary the golden child, Mamy who studied nursing, Mary the saviour of all those poor invalids and elderly slobs who hung on to her every word. It repulsed Ogie. She was different, she was forging her own path. A pioneer, branching out from the family ditch of doctors and lawyers and same old same old with a steady career in the Municipal Department of Sanitation and a budding music career - fourth singer in the church choir (she counted. Jessi could covet her seat closer to the limelight but she had to know that she just wasn’t cut out for it). She knew just how to spice up this bumbling night of plastic pleasantries and vapid congratulations - how to ‘cut the cake’ of this drab atmosphere with something Real.  Smile creeping on her face as she readied her sophisticated prank, her arm heaved like the star hitter in a peewee baseball class, slinging a cake-filled home run directly into her sister’s dopey face. Hoh! Hahah! Hahaha! What a performance, she snickered, at her sister’s poor concealment of her irritation. Where’s the saintly martyr now, glaring through her cakey makeup? Eyes widening, sweet disposition falling back into place as she glances hastily around the room, making sure nobody saw her facade slipping? Her father, ever the connoisseur of high art, joined with a raucous joy, always quick to pick up on Ogie's elegant wit. Mary, surely realising her embarrassing slowness, belatedly follows with a thin, faltering laugh, as the onlookers finally caught up to the joke with their scattered chuckles. The icing on the cake was her mother’s wide eyed shock, a deer in headlights stunned yet again by Ogie’s shining charisma.
“Ashworth & Associates - this is Rachel speaking. How may I help you today?” she breathed cherrily into the phone. The day was a busy one, as always - she had to put the call briefly on hold, three sentences in, to greet Mr. Ashworth’s 11.25 appointment and point her to the right waiting room - but she saw that as no reason to not be friendly. Fake it till you make it, they say - and she was proud that no one could ever detect a hint of forcedness in her customer service voice. She was halfway through the next phone call when they were interrupted by a low clang! “My apologies, may I put you on hold for a sec?” she quickly pushed the button, as the meeting room’s door swung open and 11.25 ran out, sobbing. Through the corner of her eyes, she could see the tray of complimentary drinks still rolling, wobbling. “You can’t do that to me!” the 11.25 appointment collapsed not that far from the door, wailing. “That’s my house! You… you guys can’t take it from me… please…” Heads were starting to poke out of the doorways, to see what was going on.
Shannon couldn’t restrain herself anymore. Tears ran down her cheeks as a drop fell onto her hand. She stood up and threw the glass into the ground, the shards scattering across the marble floor. She shoved at the door as if it was her worst enemy and swung it open, the angry slam drowning out the resigned pleas from Mr Ashworth.
Unable to feel her legs, she fell to the ground in the hallway. The receptionist looked at her in shock.
“My apologies, may I put you on hold for a sec?”
She spoke with a fake-friendly voice as she shot her a side-eye. Letting out a sigh, she let down the phone and turned her head over with an exaggerated swing. Shannon clenched her fists, despite the seething sensations in her heart, it was clear that this person regarded her as no more than a nuisance.

WORST MOVIES OF 2020
1.     Angry Asian Murder Hornets Director: Dustin Ferguson Cast: Clint Beaver, Jarad Allen, Elizabeth Barstow Critic’s Notes: There have been many cheap COVID-exploitation movies that popped out last year. And this is perhaps the worst since its less-than-80-minutes running time is filled with disconnected old trailers and ads.   2.     Artemis Fowl Director: Kenneth Branagh Cast: Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Josh Gad, Tamara Smart, Nonso Anozie. Colin Farrell, Judi Dench Critic’s Notes: Eion Colfer’s YA series is an intriguing antihero’s journey. So, of course, Disney butchered its adaptation with a hastily packaged fantasy that diluted Artemis’ menacing personality and failed capturing its “Die Hard with fairies” setup.   3.     Bobbleheads The Movie Director: Kirk Wise Cast: Cher, Jennifer Coolidge, Hala Finley, Karen Fukuhara, Khary Payton, Julian Sands, Brenda Song, Luke Wilson Critic’s Notes: From the producers of Foodfight. It is what you expect. But this is more painful to watch, as it contains the most nightmare-inducing final dance scene in an animated movie.   4.     Dolittle Director: Stephen Gaghan Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Antonio Banderas, Michael Sheen, Emma Thompson, Rami Malek, John Cena, Kumail Nanjiani, Octavia Spencer, Tom Holland, Craig Robinson, Ralph Fiennes, Selena Gomez, Marion Cotillard, Jason Mantzoukas Critic’s Notes: With cast and prestige like that, one can expect a true Oscar caliber. However, it is in a family adventure bomb with an embarrassed Downey Jr. phoning it in.   5.     Fantasy Island Director: Jeff Wadlow Cast: Michael Peña, Maggie Q, Lucy Hale, Austin Stowell, Jimmy O. Yang, Ryan Hansen, Portia Doubleday, Michael Rooker Critic’s Notes: Blumhouse’s take on the classic Ricardo Montalban TV series does not bear its charm or subtleties. Instead, expect a snore-worthy version of Truth Or Dare.   6.     Force of Nature Director: Michael Polish Cast: Emile Hirsch, Kate Bosworth, Mel Gibson, David Zayas, Stephanie Cayo Critic’s Notes: Force of Nature makes The Hurricane Heist look like The Impossible. And the presence of one Mel Gibson makes it a droning sit.   7.     Homeward Director: Michael Johnson Cast: Joey Lawrence, James Cullen Bressack, Kim Little, D.C. Douglas, Dylan Vox, Jamey Rimawi, Tom Green Critic’s Notes: Of course, The Asylum is active in bringing mockbusters. And out of their animated rip-offs, Homeward bears the most egregious resemblance to its superior source, Onward.   8.     Songbird Director: Adam Mason Cast: KJ Apa, Sofia Carson, Craig Robinson, Bradley Whitford, Peter Stormare, Alexandra Daddario, Paul Walter Hauser, Demi Moore Critic’s Notes: This is Michael Bay’s COVID-exploitation movie. So, it obviously contains numbing action scenes and tedious subplots in-between. Plus, given the situation, Songbird is tasteless.   9.     The Last Days of American Crime Director: Olivier Megaton Cast: Édgar Ramírez, Michael Pitt, Anna Brewster, Patrick Bergin, Sharlto Copley Critic’s Notes: There have been many movies last year that were released in bad timing. This actioner that glorifies its lawless violence is one of them. And it is best left rotting.
10.  The Last Thing He Wanted Director: Dee Rees Cast: Anne Hathaway, Ben Affleck, Rosie Perez, Edi Gathegi, Mel Rodriguez. Toby Jones, Willem Dafoe Critic’s Notes: A pure disappointment, given the huge talent on and behind the camera, The Last Thing He Wanted adapted an enriching source material about journalism and does nothing with it. Ironically, the title is enough a sign. Dishonorable Mentions: Christmas in the Rockies, Come Away, A Fall From Grace, Hillbilly Elegy, Wild Mountain Thyme
