Happy Tumblr Anniversary to me
Exactly 1 year ago I started blabbing on this hellsite. A lot happened in one year...
• Oct. 2021: In the Soop 2: people were analyzing the clues Bam was throwing down to prove if Jimin and Jungkook lived together. And then we get this followed by an invitation to partake in ramen:
Tumblr media
• Also Oct. 2021: Jimin’s birthday VLive when he made a phone call to JK (suspiciously staged?) and Jungkook immediately (less than 1 minute) zips up or down the elevator to join him briefly.
Tumblr media
• Nov. 2021: BTS historically wins the AMAs Artist of the Year Award and during that acceptance speech, JK had us hanging because “in 2022 we’re gonna focus on....” feeding jk some pizza…
Tumblr media
• Also Nov. 2021: The PTD LA VMinKook VLive when Jimin and Jungkook officially name their (fake) YouTube channel “Mingoogie.”
Tumblr media
• Dec. 2021: Jin unleashes Super Tuna on an unsuspecting world and surprised himself with an instant hit.
• Also Dec. 2021: the creation of individual Instagram accounts and we are blessed with a series of photos from Santa Monica Beach including this one...
Tumblr media
• Jan. 2022: The Hunger Games of Artist Made Merch began.
Tumblr media
• Also Jan. 2022: the world stopped for a week from Jan. 31-Feb. 5 when Jimin was admitted to the hospital for an emergency appendectomy and treatment for COVID simultaneously.
• Feb. 2022: Jimin finally is discharged from the hospital and goes home to recuperate and shares with us on Weverse that he’s watching “The Notebook” for the nth time.
February was a particularly meager month for us as we did not get as much content as we had been.
• March 2022: We discover Jimin’s new moon tattoo and his “Youth” tattoo behind his ear and we collectively freak out. And JK seems to have covered some of his tattoos…and we start seeing more nipples... the normalizing of naked Bangtan has begun...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Also March 2022: Jimin blesses us with the “air ass slap” video.
Tumblr media
• April 2022 (the month that kept on giving): Jimin April Fools us by changing the Twitter handle of the BTS official account to Jimin Park and every post appears like this:
Tumblr media
Also April 2022: The Grammy Awards... and Rolling Stone inadvertently reveal they are Jikookers:
Tumblr media
Also April 2022: PTD Las Vegas...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
May 2022: The Perilla Leaf Debate raged on... and proved they can’t be a couple because those darn leaves get stuck together. Ok whatever you say...
Also in May 2022: BTS is invited by the White House and President Biden to speak during our National Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. And they did amazing...(this photo is surreal)...(and we see you Jimin and JK)...
Tumblr media
Also May 2022: Jikook just Jikooking in Washington DC at Dave and Busters? (courtesy of @uarmyhope).
Tumblr media
June 2022: The bombshell heard ‘round the world. BTS going on hiatus/not a hiatus, BTS embarks on Chapter 2... and oh look, Namjoon already said they would perform Run BTS (actually practically spoiled that choreography was being created for it) and right before this he sort of said old songs like Mic Drop and Fake Love might be popular with fans but they are ready to move on from them... go watch it again. Calm down people.
Tumblr media
July 2022: Hobi killed it with Jack in the Box and Hobipalooza.
Tumblr media
Also in July 2022: They are THAT couple at a party...
Tumblr media
Aug. 2022: VampKoo drops and Armys (who were in the midst of some sort of Werewolf fantasy) were in shambles...
Tumblr media
Sept. 2022: Jungkook’s birthday WeLive (with his lil hairclips) and Jin’s interrogation of who came to wish JK happy birthday in person...
Tumblr media
Also in Sept. 2022: All we needed was a leather-gloved hand to cause a massive orgasm within the fandom...
Tumblr media
Oct. 2022: Jimin’s birthday... the thirst trap birthday wish/invitation/horn-fest...
Tumblr media
And here we are, full circle. So much more happened other than what I mentioned here! But I hope everyone can see what has remained consistent: Jimin and Jungkook being together. Now we are waiting for the big event of the year, Yet to Come in Busan. We’ve seen the sneak peeks of them rehearsing and we know Jimin and Jungkook are STILL happily being in each other’s space.
Also, the constant downplaying of what they are and have. So. much. energy. wasted. on that. Just accept it my friends. It is what it is.
And these words I’ve seen more times in the last year than in my entire lifetime before BTS: hypocrisy and heteronormativity. And the big “H” word... homophobia. Attitudes and views that are sadly still prevalent. I will admit, I have LEARNED A LOT being here. If only everyone else were capable of opening their minds to ideas that might be different than what they think they know.
On a much brighter note, I’ve encountered many of you who follow my crazy ramblings and you have enlightened me, made me feel like I belong here, bring me joy and make me smile every day. I will keep saying it, I love you all. We are in this Bangtan shit together and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Looking forward to what’s to come.

Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month this month!
Mary Lum’s exhibition catalog entitled “Moving Parts (&)” is in-library use only at the Schlesinger Library, but we wanted to include this catalog because Lum’s beautiful exhibition is up at Harvard Radcliffe Institute through June 24th. We encourage you to visit her exhibition while it’s up!
For this exhibition, Mary Lum has created an artist’s book and installation featuring photographs of temporary constructions made from a palette of broken vintage letterforms. The exhibition catalog is also gorgeous.

spider-man updates are crazy cause they were like hm his life going a little too good, lets trap MJ in a time dilated universe for five years while its like a few days for peter oh btw she fucking some other guy with a manbun in the hyperbolic time chamber now, enjoy that spider-man!!!
this is after the fact that it was only recently retconned that gwen stacy had cheated on him and had twins with the green goblin (norman osborne) in like 2004 and only retconned in 2021, so that was just a Thing for 17 years
they're seriously basing spider-man's storylines on some NTR doujins or some shit at this point cause its just sick work. and before you get caught up trying to argue that peter doesnt deserve this or that, there is literally NOTHING redeeming about the run, it's just poorly thought out drama
oh and they killed off ms. marvel (kamala khan) too in the latest update during asian-american pacific islander history month in the united states so that's cool too

Day 4 of our Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month Featured Author Interviews, continuing with Jinx!
Jinx author of Elsinore: After Hamlet
Once upon a time, a prince avenged his father’s death. If only he could have foreseen his own.
The year is 2021—or maybe 1602? Hamlet the Younger has just tragically died and Fortinbras the Younger, King of Norway and newly-conquered Denmark, has a lot of cleaning up to do. Elsinore: After Hamlet is a text-based interactive fiction exploration of William Shakespeare's Hamlet as a plague text and a reckoning of Asian American identity during these trying times. Also contains bad puns and glowing text.
Read more about Elsinore: After Hamlet here.
Play the Game Here.
Tags: Fantasy.
Jinx is also the author of The Harrowed and the Hushed and Rougi.
[INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT UNDER THE CUT!]
Q1. Hello! Could you tell us a little bit about to yourself and your project?
Hi! I’m Jinx (she/her), longtime listener and first time caller, writer, and lover of the cute and the gothic.
I’ve always loved writing and first got into interactive fiction during the first lockdowns in 2020. I fell in love with the medium and it’s been such a wonderful adventure since. My first project, Elsinore: After Hamlet, deals with a lot of the frustration and uncertainty I felt during that time as an Asian American with the rug pulled from under all of us. I’m currently working on The Harrowed and the Hushed, a low fantasy murder mystery set in Victorian London, and Rougi, a social intrigue mystery about a cursed ballet in Belle Époque Paris. I really enjoy working with illusions, intrigue, and how we can find ourselves in the strange and monstrous.
Q2. What inspired your current project?
My current projects, The Harrowed and the Hushed and Rougi, are rooted in my undying love of the late 19th century and gothic literature – I love me a good dramatic mystery too, which I’m sure comes as a surprise to absolutely no one. H&H draws a lot from the genre of sensation fiction, which aims to elicit physical reactions in its readers with sensationalized, page-turner plots. The genre traditionally deals very heavily with metaphors of social and identity anxieties, which also made it a very natural source of inspiration for me since those are themes that I really love exploring with my writing. H&H is essentially a love letter to a lot of things I adore, garnished with references to Gothic, Romantic, and Decadent literature, plus my own cultural spin on things. (If you were wondering if some of my characters were named in homage…the answer is probably yes.)
Rougi, which was my entry to interact-if’s January game jam, really came from me looking at color theory and running with it. Based on the “red herring” theme, I knew I wanted to do something with a very strong aesthetic component, so I went back to my bunhead roots and turned it up to the max. I love ballet and as a former dancer, I felt like drama backstage and onstage was the perfect backdrop for a mix of possibly supernatural, definitely interpersonal intrigue. Also, Art Nouveau is so gorgeous and I wanted to write about pretty things (possibly with ugly insides wink-wonk).
Elsinore: After Hamlet is my very first IF project and a real testament to the tangled state of mind I experienced for the bulk of 2021. That spring was so chaotic – lots of sleepless nights and worries gnawing at me from the inside out. E:AH originally started as a final project for a class on medicine and literature, and very quickly became a surprisingly intimate way for me to create some kind of catharsis while the world seemed to fall apart. (Shoutout to the professor who was very chill with me submitting literal plague doctor memes for class discussion, she made Zoom U much better.) I am a self-professed Shakespeare nerd, and looking at one of my favorite plays through a very personal, emotional lens was such an intense experience. I didn’t expect that the development process would break me out of the apathy I’d fallen into at all, let alone so fiercely, but it was a welcome change from feeling scared and dissociated almost constantly.
Q3. Do you pull from your own identity for inspiration? How has that been reflected in your work?
My identity definitely influences how I approach narratives. E:AH was a direct product of the stress I felt juggling my responsibilities as a student, pressure from the pandemic, and my fears as an Asian American woman in a space that became incredibly hostile and unstable. It’s really a slice of how I was experiencing life at the time, and I hope that resonates with players and gets them thinking. For Asian players, I hope that E:AH is a cathartic experience; for non-Asian players, I hope that it shares a different, impactful perspective.
As a kid, I really fixated on the few instances of Asian representation I found in media, so as a creator now, it’s incredibly empowering to be able to include characters who reflect my own experiences and hopefully connect with my audience too. Decentralizing whiteness, particularly in traditionally eurocentric narratives, is very hard-baked into what I create. On a lighter note, food as a love language is also a big cultural influence on my writing and that definitely shows, haha. I’m a huge foodie IRL as well, so coupled with my synesthesia, my writing definitely falls heavily on the sensory side.
Q4. What are you most excited about your project?
E:AH is deeply personal and combines two of my greatest passions (Shakespeare and ~ being melodramatic ~), so while it’s a little scary to have something so near and dear to me out on the internet, I’m absolutely blown away by the response it’s received so far. I’m super excited to see how the playing experience changes (for me personally and in general) over time – I can already foresee it becoming a little like a diary entry preserved online.
As for the two projects I’m currently working on, I am so excited to see how players react to the twists and turns I’m writing into Rougi. I was a little overambitious when planning it out for the January game jam I crafted it for, so I can’t wait to flesh it out fully. Rougi is also my first project written in Sugarcube, so the transition has definitely been a learning journey and I’m excited to show off what I’ve learned.
With The Harrowed and the Hushed, I think I’m most excited about sharing all the lore I’ve built up. Fantasy is the first genre I fell in love with, so getting to create and share my own magical vision is really, really cool.
Q5. What has your experience writing an IF and with the IF community been like?
My introduction to IF came during a lot of turmoil, and the community has been so friendly and supportive. It’s been a blast diving into all these amazing projects and meeting lots of wonderful people! Learning to code has been fun frustrating a very unique and rewarding journey, and it’s seriously such a fantastic feeling to see all the pieces – drafting, Twine-wrangling, writing, UI building – fit together to make a final product. I’m so thankful that my experience with the community so far has led me to make very dear friends and interact with kind and thoughtful readers.
Q7. What piece of advice would you give to fellow creators?
*Shia Laboeuf voice* JUST DO IT. No, but seriously: your story is uniquely yours and there is no one better to tell it. Storytelling is such an intrinsic part of human history and I think it’s one of the most beautiful records of our presence and our world. Despite the obstacles and frustration that comes with being a creator, there’s nothing like the satisfaction of fulfilling that scene you’ve been dying to write, or finally nailing the code you’ve been struggling with. Take care of yourself, and always remember the excitement and passion that led you to where you are now. I’m rooting for you!
That, and don’t code or debug when you’re sleepy. The bug will still be there (unfortunately) after you sleep, and you run far less risk of falling asleep at your computer and waking up to several pages of random characters in the middle of your stylesheet or having to hunt down every time you misspelled a variable…I may or may not be speaking from personal experience.

A New York City man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter and a hate crime in the 2021 killing of a Chinese immigrant has been sentenced to 22 years in prison, authorities said.
Jarrod Powell's attack on c, 61, in Manhattan's East Harlem neighborhood was one of a spate of attacks targeting Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the United States.
Ma was in a coma for eight months before he died. Police surveillance video of the April 2021 attack showed Ma being knocked down from behind and kicked in the head multiple times by a lone man.
Powell pleaded guilty in January to manslaughter in the first degree as a hate crime, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office said in a statement announcing that the 51-year-old had been sentenced to 22 years in prison.
"Mr. Ma's death was the result of a despicable racially motivated attack," Bragg said. "(No) one should have to fear that they may be in danger because of their background."
Ma was a pastry chef who came to the U.S. with his wife two years before the attack, U.S. media have reported.
Bragg's office said Powell admitted in his plea that he targeted Ma due to his Asian heritage. The office said it currently has 39 open cases related to anti-Asian hate crimes.
The attack on Ma came a month after a shooting spree at three Atlanta spas left eight people dead, including six Asian women.
About one-third of Asian Americans say they have changed their daily routines due to concerns over threats and attacks, according to a 2022 report from the Pew Research Center. The FBI says there were 305 U.S. hate crimes against Asians in 2021.

Advancing Leaders Through Opportunity
That is this year's theme of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, according to the Asian Pacific American Council. AAPI Month, sometimes also known as AANHPI Heritage Month (NH being Native Hawaiian, as of 2021), is celebrated annually in May in the US.
The US Census estimates that there are 24 million people of Asian descent as well as 1.7 million people of Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander descent.
According to NPR, "The legislation [in 1990] to annually designate May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month referenced two key dates: May 7 and May 10. May 7, 1843, marks the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States. And May 10, 1869, or Golden Spike Day, recognizes the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in the U.S., which had significant contributions from Chinese workers."
PBS has an assortment of videos here, including one that discussed identity and how we describe Asian American, Pacific Islander, and Native Hawaiian communities.

Barbie's New Doll Celebrates APIA Heritage Month - and It Honors a Hollywood Trailblazer
Image Sources: Mattel and Photo Illustration: Ava Cruz A week after releasing its first Barbie doll with Down syndrome, Mattel has unveiled an Anna May Wong Barbie for Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month. Anna May Wong, who passed away in February 1961, was a Hollywood trailblazer. She's widely considered to be the first Chinese American Hollywood film star, and her acting earned her international recognition. She became known for portraying Chinese Americans in a positive and accurate light during periods of widespread and dangerous prejudice. While many depictions of Chinese characters in US films at the time were discriminatory and racist - and many times played by non-Chinese actors in yellowface - Wong's characters often offered positive and nonstereotypical representation. She even turned down roles she felt were negative or unsympathetic. She was also the first Asian American woman to get a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for acting, in 1960. The Anna May Wong Barbie, which is part of Mattel's "Inspiring Women" series, is based on her role in "Limehouse Blues," a movie from 1934. The doll is dressed in a red gown and has Wong's signature bangs. The depiction was approved by Anna Wong, Wong's niece, who worked closely with Mattel to develop the doll, according to a statement provided by the brand. While a doll may seem like a small step, there's tremendous value in offering children the chance to play with a Barbie that looks like them. "Seeing is believing, and Anna May Wong's courage and perseverance allowed generations of Asian Americans to see themselves on screen outside of stereotypes and typecasts," Mattel wrote in an Instagram caption of the post revealing the new doll. Mattel has released Asian Barbie dolls before, but in 2021, the company was criticized for failing to include a Barbie who appeared to be Asian in its lineup of Olympic Barbie dolls, according to NBC News. The Barbie Signature Anna May Wong Doll is currently available for preorder at Walmart ($35); it's also being sold at Target ($35) and Mattel Creations ($35), but the preorders have sold out. In memory of Hung Liu who passed away last August and in honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
Hung Liu was a Chinese American artist who once said her goal was “to invent a way of allowing myself to practice as a Chinese artist outside of a Chinese culture.”
Liu was born in 1948 during the revolutionary era in Changchun in northeast China,. Her father was a teacher imprisoned for his involvement in anti-Communist politics. During the Cultural Revolution, she was sent by the government to the countryside to work on farms for “re-education.”
In the 1970s, Liu studied at Beijing Teachers College and Central Academy of Fine Arts, and earned a graduate degree in 1981. But she grew restless with the officially-sanctioned Socialist Realist style and subjects. In 1984, she was given a permission to travel to the United States and enrolled in the MFA program at the University of California, San Diego.
Liu settled permanently in the Bay Area. She started teaching at Mills College in Oakland in 1990, eventually retiring in 2014.
Her death in August 2021 came less than three weeks before the scheduled opening of a career survey, “Hung Liu: Portraits of Promised Lands,” at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. She was the first Asian American woman to have a solo exhibition there.
Her work incorporated photo-based images that combined the political and the personal. Many of these images were of figures forgotten by history such as laborers, immigrants, prisoners, and prostitutes. (From “Hung Liu, Artist Who Blended East and West, Is Dead at 73” by Holland Cotter, The New York Times, August 22, 2021)

Union Leaders Rally Behind Su
Tumblr media
Today, Politico highlighted a broad range of voices coming out forcefully in support of Acting Secretary Julie Su’s nomination to be U.S Labor Secretary, including labor unions, business groups, former Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh, and others. “‘Julie Su has been a champion for labor, and labor is mobilizing in the way only we can,’ AFL-CIO spokesperson Ray Zaccaro said. he administration has highlighted her support from groups like the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Small Business Majority and those representing Asian American and Pacific Islanders. If confirmed, Su would be Biden’s first APPI Cabinet secretary and his fourth AAPI Cabinet member overall.” Walsh has also been actively engaged in the process and advocating for Su with labor and business leaders and senators, according to an administration official.”
The full story:
Politico: Unions pour on support for Biden’s Labor pick amid confirmation worries Authors: Nick Niedzwiadek and Jennifer Haberkorn. Unions are stepping in to boost President Joe Biden’s pick to lead the Labor Department as Democrats seek to avert an embarrassing defeat that would set back the administration’s agenda for workers. Unified Republican opposition to the nominee, Julie Su, has the unions and the White House focused on a handful of moderate senators who have yet to make their intentions known — Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Angus King (I-Maine) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.). The AFL-CIO this week began rolling out a campaign to drum up support for Su, with an emphasis on getting local affiliates to lean on undecided senators and a six-figure ad buy running in Washington, D.C. and Arizona. The “Stand with Su” effort is a direct counterweight to some of the forces that have been lobbying against her — including the name choice, as one of the main anti-confirmation groups is called “Stand Against Su.” “Julie Su has been a champion for labor, and labor is mobilizing in the way only we can,” AFL-CIO spokesperson Ray Zaccaro said. A key part of the pitch is that Su, who faces a committee vote Wednesday, is in the same mold as former Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, a seasoned politician who had fans on both sides of the aisle and who has been directly involved in rounding up support for her, according to an administration official. Su served as Walsh’s deputy secretary beginning in July 2021 and has been acting head of the department for the past month, after Walsh stepped down to run the NHL Players’ Association.   “She has worked hand in hand with Marty Walsh,” American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten told POLITICO. “If you liked the way Marty Walsh operated as the Secretary of Labor, then there’s no reason not to embrace Julie Su.”   But Republicans say Su, who was labor secretary California before coming to Washington, would veer sharply left of Walsh and used a confirmation hearing this week to portray her as anti-business and captive to labor’s priorities. Although all five of the senators in question voted to confirm Su as deputy secretary, Manchin, Tester and Sinema are likely to face tough reelection fights next year. “The more that people learn about her track record and just how bad she was in this role in California, we’re seeing that shifting the debate,” Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-Calif.), a leading critic of Su, told POLITICO prior to her confirmation hearing. “It’s very different when you’re going for the top position than being under Marty Walsh.”   The battle over Su is the Biden administration’s first attempt at replacing a Cabinet secretary, and the latest test of Democratic leadership’s ability to confirm nominees after multiple high-profile misfires. Though Su is already steering the department, administrations are typically wary of issuing major policy decisions without a permanent leader, meaning that a protracted confirmation fight could bog down the agency for months. Administration officials are holding nightly “war room” calls with Su’s backers to discuss the game plan for the following day and to track developments, according to a White House official. The administration also holds 15 to 20 check-in calls per day across labor and business groups. Walsh has also been actively engaged in the process and advocating for Su with labor and business leaders and senators, according to an administration official. Many Democrats on Capitol Hill are hopeful Kelly, Tester and King will support Su. If that is the case, and Sen. Dianne Feinstein remains in San Francisco recovering from shingles, Su and the White House would still need to win over Manchin and Sinema, both of whom have bucked the president in the past. Neither senator is on the committee that will vote Wednesday on whether to advance Su’s nomination to the floor and attention will fully turn to them immediately after the vote. Su has been ramping up her meetings with senators of both parties in recent weeks, though she has yet to meet with several key holdouts. She has spoken to Sinema, according to two sources familiar with the situation, and the White House is in touch with Manchin, an administration official said. Su doesn’t have a traditional “sherpa,” a veteran lawmaker or some other plugged-in operative who typically leads Cabinet officials and other important nominees through the confirmation process on Capitol Hill. The lack of one has raised eyebrows among some of Su’s supporters about the White House’s level of support for the nomination. The term “sherpa” is being phased out at the White House, however. Instead, she has a “navigator” — the senior leader of the Labor Department’s congressional affairs shop. The office has led Su through the process and accompanied her at each of her Senate meetings, according to that official. Su is only the second Cabinet official to go through the confirmation process since the first months of the Biden administration — Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Arati Prabhakar being the other — and the agencies now lead the confirmation process, an administration official said. With an obvious eye toward Manchin, the White House has heavily touted Su’s support from labor unions, including the AFL-CIO, Teamsters and, most significantly, United Mine Workers of America. While a recent letter of support from Mine Workers President Cecil E. Roberts may pull weight with Manchin, Su supporters have been cautious to not be too heavy-handed with either him or Sinema, knowing that an overt lobbying effort may backfire.   “The White House knows what they need to do for the best outcome to get Julie Su confirmed,” said an organized labor official, who requested anonymity to discuss political strategy. “They know the relationship dynamics they have with the senators in question. And they know it’s a complicated circumstance that requires deft and delicate management.”   The White House’s light-touch strategy is not entirely reliant on unions to shoulder the lobbying load and the administration has highlighted her support from groups like the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Small Business Majority and those representing Asian American and Pacific Islanders. If confirmed, Su would be Biden’s first APPI Cabinet secretary and his fourth AAPI Cabinet member overall. But organized labor is at the center of the pro-Su push. “There’s a world of Julie Su supporters out there, and we’re trying to show that,” the labor official said. “We saw these senators vote for her and there’s no reason to vote against her now. It remains to be seen just how uncertain they actually are.”   Sources: THX News, The White House & Politico. Read the full article
