Day 14 of my Hair Journal was painting during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI).
I reached out to Professor Wayne Quilliam who specialized in photography of Aboriginal people (who works with the Aboriginal people and gets permission to photograph them) and he gave me permission to reference his photography for my portrait.
https://aboriginal.photography/
For the background, I referenced the traditional Aboriginal Dot Painting.
I always find it so interesting to paint people from all over the world. Though I bet traveling and doing it in person would be far more interesting than from my little Hobbit Hole.
Still... I really enjoyed it.

thinking bout in past, we always lov talkimg about our language n culture in discord servers as it so very important to us n it same as infodumping anything else.
but always mad n frustrated, cuz either its
A. extreme dissintrest n only 1 person show intrest
B. Face absolute fucking racism cuz of.
cuz you see, we southeast asian, we camboddian, our language look like this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It not considered "pretty asian language", it considered "freaky scary demonic foreign". Every single time someone say "it look like gummy worms" or loose their shit about how "weird" it is.
---
1
the worst situation was when in server about original species and we went on ramble about khmer language cuz someone showw intrest.
Then we said how learning online, basic book, and little with parents cuz no khmer language books or anything cambodian related At All in libraries n not many resourses much. Our big sis said how when she was younger, there was flat out Nothing online, and now theres at least tiny tinyy bit
But when said that, fucking white person said "dont learn language online, learn from history book". we already said Why we cant, and since they literally said "history book", clearly they dont know SHIT about cambodian history or even bothered googling "cambodia/khmer" alone (a literal genocide which wiped out lot of art n culture shit, it literal reason why our parents even in USA in first place. it literally first thing that pops up if you type cambodia/khmer)
So fucking saying that at all is gross. Telling anyone to "learn from history book" is fucked up, Shut up.
-
So when we literally restated reason Why and Why saying it is fucked, they ignored us and said "your attacking me and being mean!!!" because.... we didnt use tone indicator... Even after saying "it my fault for not tone indicating but point still stands", they just ignored
(hate how often tone indicators are so very weaponized in these situations, we personally need tone indicators too, please ppl stop weaponizing n use as "ur mean!!!" 4 calling something out)
But not moments later, some other person goes "omgg im learrning korean on duolingo!!!" and they fucking congratulated them????
sigh
(if want learn more, watch Funan on netflix or read the book it based on, and/or look up khmer rouge, edit: theres also documentary The Killing Fields, forgot to include)
---
2
So then we talked about Nāgas (នាគ Neak in khmer) cuz topic of dragons were brought up so we talked about them. Serpents important to our culture and many southeast asian cultures, we said that
Tumblr media
but then was told by mod to censor/stop talking about it cuz the word "looks like the N slur".
really just,,,, cannot express how uncomforable n angry we were.
---
3
So thenn it all sort of boiled over
Pretty much tried standing up for self n friend helped us, tried to educate about how their behavior towards us was gross, many ppl who stood back (and seem agree with us) left server, but 99% of server was loud and lost their shit when we n friend told them that white ppl dont experience racism
Someone even said "i disagree with u" then turned around n said "im learning chinese from a friend!!!!" while were right here literally being stepped on in real time about talking about own language and culture.
(stuff like descrimination is nuanced, lot of intersection. A purely white person with monolids may face anti-asian hate, mixed white ppl may face racism too, etc etc. but that all still based in POC hate or assumed POC status, not on whiteness, white fucking supremecy, not facing bad shit cuz of being white, youre litterally benefiting from it but harmed in other wayz in intersections cuz of what it entails. god.)
So yeah, they all lost their shit, we left.
We even told owner how to fix n deal with these issues, they did the complete opposite, banning ALL discussion of culture n race.
This happened around 2021-2022 thinks so.
---
anyways, yeah. Just wanted to get this out as its AAPI month n soon is "speak your language day" n we will be making posts in khmer, and us being more open about us being cambodian as well as disabled, queer, level 2 autistic, other stuff.
We never see rep of own culture n people in ANY media at all, not once. None in the USA care about the language or culture unless own people. None really care about anything asian that is not east asian, n seeing these white ppl flustered over our east asian brethren but grossed at ppl like me, frustrating.
White ppl, stand up for your poc friends and strangers especially if being targeted, speak out if someone being weird about shit.
ppl like us not always able to realize or have voice to stand up, have another post about it here. If this happened IRL, wouldnt be able to do anything. Only close friend stood up for us, the other ppl who agreed w us didnt do anything, just left n gave us "kind message" after about how fucked th plac was..
so yeah, plz do better.
[plz reblog]

In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, I’ve decided to make a long-post about the white-washing of Minhkhoa Khan aka the Ghost-maker.
To start I want to establish Khoa’s probable(it has not been said is in detail yet) race/ethnic background. Being from Singapore It’s very likely he’s Chinese, Malaysian, or Indian, as those are the most common ethnic groups in Singapore. Khoa’s last name ‘Khan’ is mostly a middle eastern(only in certian parts of the middle east)/east Asian name(I’m sure you can think of one guy in particular with this last name).
Anyway ethnic background aside, it’s been well-established that Ghost-maker is brown.
Tumblr media
Here he is in batman v.3 109
Tumblr media Tumblr media
batman v.3 106 (ft. bruce for white guy reference)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
batman 2021 annual
Tumblr media
batman: the knight #4 (again ft bruce for white guy reference)
Point being: he’s not white
So then it’s a little off to get hit with this face reveal in Batman Incorporated #7
Tumblr media
Now does he look like a white guy? Not necessarily, he could be a lighter skinned Asian person, but I don’t appreciate the deviation from his earlier depictions as being darker. Colorism is a big deal, especially in Asia right now. Pale skin is seen as much more beautiful than dark skin, and this has led to many people doing things such as skin bleaching to achieve lighter skin tones. With this being the current state of things, it’s so important to have visibility for darker Asian people in media, and for this reason it comes across as a shitty move for dc to white-wash Minhkhoa.
Additionally dc had this alternate cover for batman inc #8, because they’re so good at diversity and totally didn’t just whitewash this guy :)
Tumblr media
(btw not saying dc did any of this on purpose/with malicious intent, but rather that regardless of intention this was bad and they should fix it)
tldr: dc white-washed ghost-maker despite him being previously portrayed as much darker-skinned

Wind down sleepytime sketches of Nomura, Mary, and Cayden, who are dressed in traditional clothing from their respective cultures and are ready to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
Nomura (Japanese) is dressed in a kimono.
Mary (Chinese) is dressed in a qipao.
Cayden (Vietnamese) is dressed in an ao dai that's actually a bit short for them. (Their dad got them one in the men's design after they came out to him.)

With its bronze, intricate decorative elements, surely a Happy Meal in the Shang Dynasty couldn’t be on the value menu.
In Mai Dang Lao (McDonald’s), a hamburger box, fries container, fork, and knife are cast in bronze and adorned with traditional Chinese motifs like the taotie mask, typically featured on ancient ritual bronze vessels used in worship of the ancestors.
Here it is combined with the iconic logo of the fast-food giant, transforming the “Happy Meal” into a Shang-dynasty artifact. The Asian American artist Zhang Hongtu, a leader of the “Political Pop” movement in contemporary Chinese art, lives in Queens, New York, after emigrating from China in the 1980s. By creatively juxtaposing ancient China with contemporary America, and ritual art with consumer culture, Zhang whimsically critiques systems of power.

And So April is come and gone.
Now on Begins the 1st day of May. With that being said this this new month brings the 8 brings the Asian culture and Pacific islander culture To become more aware than ever before with recent events of having a lot of Asian Hate.
Now is the time to be able to put a stop to all this. More than ever to learn more about Asian and Pacific islander culture and to continue that for many generations to come to learn of their beautiful and wonderful diversity of their way of life.
May is the month all of the Asian communities and Pacific islander communities and their stories to be told from now till the end of May and even then. Tell them all year long like every other Culture and Race, and Religion.
One Month does not hold us to tell Everyone's Stories. But It means alot to Represent Every Culture For the Month They are Given.
Representation Matters.
Divisterity Matters
And more Importantly.
STOP ASIAN HATE.
We are all part of one World 🌎
But we all can't be Happy if we can't learn to Love one another.
That goes for everyone and anyone.
Tell your family, your friends, and etc.
Half of my Good friends are Asian. They have been part of my life for a long time and I don't plan on having that being torn apart because of Ignorance.
Support Their People and Learn all you can about The Way Of Asia 🌏 and The Way Of Pacific Islands 🏝
THIS IS AAPI MONTH
