In general Arthur doesn't usually feel fear.

Not true fear, that is. And dreading facing an angry Gareth or an upset Bedivere is not true fear.

But he has felt it, three specific times in his life to be honest. The first time was when Bedivere lost his arm. Arthur was terrified that he was about to lose his best friend forever, that he couldn't defeat the enemies surrounding them fast enough to get Bedivere help. In that moment his fear made him move faster, fight far more visciously than he ever would have normally. All to ensure he could save Bedivere's life.

The second time was when he fought Vortigern for the first time, though it only truly kicked in once he unleashed Excalibur's power...and nothing happened. Seeing the way Vortigern was able to shrug off the blast released by the holy sword left Arthur frozen in fear and dread since he didn't know what to do at that point. Especially since Excalibur's blast was always his last resort and he was already fairly injured. Had it not been for Merlin dragging him away to seek out what would later turn out to be Rhongomyniad... Well, Arthur doesn't like to think about it.

And then there's the final time. The first and only time Arthur faced Lucius Tiberius in person on the battlefield was also the moment where Arthur felt truly afraid. Not because of Lucius' strength though that was certainly a thing to dread. Nor was it because of the emperor's armies, massive though they were. It was because of what he saw shining through Lucius Tiberius' eyes. Like a black hole of ego, confidence, charisma, and obsession that grew stronger the longer their battle went on. An obsession that shone brighter and brighter like the flames of madness as Arthur rejected him over and over and each time the man's sword drew blood. It was this fear that made Arthur instinctively unleash Excalibur in the end, saving him from death or capture at the hands of the maddened emperor. But even then the nightmares remained for years.

did I miss something???? I'm almost done with avalon, and only found this out after reading the tapestry from the side quest that makes you collect a bunch of pieces of it from all over the world

I did most of avalon awhile ago, so did I just forget??? I feel like that's a huge thing, everyone is always talking about defeating the pendragon, but no one ever mentions that it is the king (albeit transformed from evil magic BUT STILL) like huh?? can someone tell me when they first mention that?

Considering the (implied) timeline of Arc 2 (for fic reasons) and... so confused by the pacing of this lore.

Celestia was sunk by the Storm Titan who had been summoned to aide them against the Shadow Web/Shadow Horde. And this is framed as a really ancient event, like centuries ago.

Zafaria happens. We know Morganthe ruled here once and this was where the Council of Light had previously defeated her and buried her Deck of Shadows. If the Wizard completes Blind Whitemane’s side-quests, the blind elder tells the Wizard about these dark times... also implied to be very long ago, so long that the lions, elephants, zebra, and gorillas still lived harmoniously.

And then Avalon kinda throws a wrench in this. Morganthe’s brother is a dishonored knight, and a ghost, so that doesn’t really prove anything, but then we learn that Morganthe was responsible for Artorius turning into the Pendragon. Yet Queen Gwendolyn, presumably of a similar age to Artorius is also still alive and most of the knights who served with Artorius are still around too. So if Morganthe was a young apprentice within their lifetimes, and the people of Avalon are presumably mortal, it can’t possibly have been centuries since Morganthe’s ascension to power, the clash with Celestia, and ruling Zafaria...

The history unveiled about her in Khrysalis also confuses things. Morganthe was a student of Ravenwood recently enough to have fought with Malistaire Drake (and Sylvia is mentioned that might put Morganthe in an even stricter reference of time), and then her banishment. She sought out the astral magic of the Radiant Alcazar in Khrysalis (and tore it apart when they wouldn’t teach her... though I think it’s implied that was a second visit that she returned and destroyed it.) And we see a younger Captain Coleridge with her. We know he’s still alive. Yet the Aracha still make out like it’s been some long, grand century or two serving under Morganthe as the Shadow Queen and awaiting the moment she rewrites the Spiral.

Also, several members of the Council of Light, the same council who defeated her in Zafaria, are still alive in the present day. Some of them aren’t even all that old, like Diego or Emperor Yoshihoto.

(I don’t count Merle’s age in all this because he’s just the Sagely Old Wizard trope and it is impossible to imagine that he was ever young. Merle’s probably immortal.)

EDIT: I just realized I forgot about Azteca in all of this... but I don’t think Azteca added anything to the lore of Morganthe so... not really relevant anyway I suppose.

Fate Original Characters; Arthurian Legend Edition.

Lancelot Du Lac

⠀   ⠀⠀  Serves as Prototype Arthur’s Lancelot, an individual with an empty and voided attitude. Seems to have no feelings toward anything, other than serving his master. After committing so many issues in the legend that was his life, he sees himself no less a tool. As was the want and intention of people who forced their will upon him during his epic.  ⠀   ⠀⠀  Lancelot no longer believes in love, and compares his feelings to Guinevere as more an obsession then that of love. He feels his relationship with Elaine that of one wherein he serves her how she wants - no less a Knight would serve a King or Queen. His feelings for Galahad is that, it is not his son. Merely just an existence of his failings. Although deep down, he envies Galahad or thinks he is amazing, his regards to his own son is that: You are everything I wish I could be.

Morgan Le Fae

⠀   ⠀⠀A more or less Arthurian friendly copy and paste version of Morgan le Fae. She exists primarily in Prototype Arthurs universe. With some alterations in her story. For instance, Morgan killed Morgause and gave birth to the 3 Orkney Children including Mordred. Around the age of 13 she murdered her sister, but also kept her alive for fun. Leaving her to watch over her other dead apostles in church. While she posed as Morgause herself, having ‘Fallen in Love’ with King Lot.  ⠀   ⠀⠀Although Morgan was not vengeful when King Lot died, she had already hated King Arthur and held disdain for him. In general she was a woman who held disdain for the world at large. The world was to be conquered by anyone who walked its world, and she did not see herself any different then any man who sought to uniquely rule upon it. ⠀   ⠀⠀Morgan is straightforward, an individual who indeed is evil and maleficent. Holding no actual love for things around her, nor care for that matter. She values success, and enjoys the grief of others. Believing to rule with a firm and unjust hand. Rather that that of the ideology of the general populace living with one another on the world.

Guinevere ( BRIDE ) Visual Aid .

⠀   ⠀⠀Guinevere is the face of 3 greek servants: Moirai . Guinevere only appears when Arthur or Artoria is in trouble - that is to say only in FGO’s time line. She will self impose her summoning through the Round table that Mashu holds. However due to how wonderful Gudako/etc is, they have no reason or need to impose themself ever. She cannot be summoned unless she lets herself be, this is due to one of her skill set that is unique to her and her affiliation with the round table. ⠀   ⠀⠀Guin speaks (Clotho) things into life, and crafts (Lachesis) things together. Due to her entire existence and life being that who ended so many things with the round table. Atropos is uniquely most related to her, and takes the form of the weapon that she has. It is also the manifestation of her Noble Phantasm, which is more or less to end/decide/cut the fate of anything that is created. ⠀   ⠀⠀ Unlike Shiki(s) who can see the lines of death,  Guinevere can only see the lines of relationships to one another. This can be, your relationship to death. Or your relationship to another person, in essence if one or two things have  fate tied to one another. Guinevere can tear it apart via her Noble Phatasm. ⠀   ⠀⠀Due to her ties to Clotho and Lachesis, she has some capacity to create circumstances or relationships between fate and destiny. Overall, its important to know that DESTINY & FATE =/= the same capacity as what Shiki themselves can do.

King Arthur: True name - Roman General,  Lucius Artorius Castus .

⠀   ⠀⠀  If Charlemagne is the romanticization of Charles. Then this iteration of Arthur is the precise opposite. The version of him that is more historically accurate, but lesser known and much less powerful. In this alternate universe, or the only way he is even possibly summoned is via FGO’s timeline. ONLY this timeline, there is no way to get him anywhere else because you will summon Artoria or Prototype!Pendragon. ⠀   ⠀⠀  He is the essence of a himbo, lazy, and his only ability is really based off of his wonderful charisma. Being someone who can unite people despite how individually unique everyone is, while also being able to command them thusly. He is very attractive, his voice is even, and very easy going.

3rd thread now in the unofficial artorius x mariela trilogy, haha 

The Druids break camp early in the morning, just as the first of the winter’s snow begins to fall softly from the heavens above. 

The men, women and children cover their heads with thick woven shawls, aware of the power of the elements in a way Artorius and Mariela could not be. A noble upbringing meant roaring fires in hearths, and servants to ensure their chambers were kept warm. The rough life of the wandering people of the Old Ways is unfamiliar to them.

The same elderly lady who Artorius had helped earlier with her food cart approaches the man, providing the couple with scarves of their own. Spun herself, for her children long perished in the Purges. Artorius accepts his shawl hesitantly, feeling a deep sense of guilt festering within. His fingers tremble as he holds onto the rough woollen fabric. Perhaps he’d held the lady’s children thus, in the dungeons of his past, breaking the bones of their hands under orders of the King. For torture loosened tongues, and the knights were able to locate more of a persecuted people following such barbaric practices. 

Once upon a time, Artorius did everything in his power to hunt down the people who now offer him sanctuary.

He looks over to his wife-to-be, banishing the demons in his mind with a small smile. Wrapping her shawl around her neck, and over her waves of cascading brown hair, the former prince leans in, kissing her gently. 

“Well, you do make for a stunning druid woman. I am honoured to have you by my side.”

Smiling at her response, he takes her hand, shifting the weight of a carrycase of tent poles and fabric upon his back.

Thankfully, Harmonia and her assorted female friends are nowhere to be seen. Since the Catha himself had now declared them to be wed, perhaps the nymphs had given up on their seduction of the exiled Pendragon? Artorius certainly hopes so. It may be he still needs to earn the respect of these people, but the Catha’s word seemed binding on the people, and Harmonia, daughter of Cadmus would not dare go openly against the words of the elders.

The months pass. 

The druids continue to travel on, across field and stream and woodland, as the green landscape slowly turns into one of white snow and sky. At night, as they lie together, cuddled in their tent, Artorius is sure he can hear the mournful howls of the wolves, returning from the north where it is even colder still.

Uther’s raids grow more frequent, as the length of time of Artorius’ self-imposed exile grows. The magic of the druids helps conceal the camp, and Artorius is instructed to defend the women and children, should the knights break past the first line of defence. Thankfully, true bloodshed is rare. Arthur is leading the raids now, and his twin does not have the same ruthless bent on eradicating the magical community as Artorius once had. 

Arthur’s heart simply isn’t in it, and it shows.

Artorius is just glad he ends up not having to reveal himself to his twin, nor cross blades with his brother. He is not sure if he could handle such a confrontation. Not knowing all he does now, not wishing to place more burdens on his abandoned brother’s shoulders.

I will return one day. I will help you make things right. Artorius vows silently, reaching into his shirt and drawing forth the little wooden bear connected to a necklace of twined leather. He touches the head of the carved statue against his lips, thinking on the burden of duty that Arthur must now be facing. One of the druid men had shown the exiled prince how to make such craft during the evenings around the fire, and Artorius had made a new friend. Adrien, was his name.

Samheim comes and goes. Mariela and Artorius sit together around the bonfire, listening to the stories, to the chanting and blessing of the druids as they celebrate the time-honoured festival. The idea of ghosts returning to the land of the living, even for one day, sticks fast in Artorius’ mind. At one point during the celebrations, he turns and looks at Mariela, stroking her palm lightly. Wondering if she too thought of her mother, lost to her at a tender age.

As the days shorten, and the snow begins to fall in earnest, talk of the Winter Solstice and the arrival of the travellers at the Great Stones of Nemeton gathers apace. Even the icy wind cannot hold back the enthusiasm of the children, who always seemed to grow excited around this time of the year - the crackling fire of the Yule log, the exchange of mistletoe, the giving of sweets and good wishes amongst family and friends.

There is even talk of a wedding to be held too. The promised union of Artorius Pendragon and Mariela Wendwater would accompany the festivities in the shadow of the sacred standing stones. The hope of light in the darkness, and the shift of the seasons would be epitomised in the formal recognition of their love.

Fringilla’s Tragic Backstory

If we can talk about the tragic backstory for the villain of every piece of media I’m going to do it for Fringilla too. Because this woman has been THROUGH IT.

TLDR: Fringilla has a classic corruption arc, comparable to the likes of Eve Polastri, Will Graham, Anakin Skywalker and Morgana Pendragon. She starts out quiet and caring and ends hardened and many might say cruel. Her treatment at Aretuza was terrible and definitely ties into her decision to cut off all ties and fully commit herself to Nilfgaard.

Let’s start out by talking about her personality when she first enters Aretuza. She is shown to be very caring and also very shy. When Tissaia states that Fringilla’s conduit moment was freezing a cat she immediately says she didn’t mean to and then later when they are working with lightning Fringilla is the first one to try and help Doralis.

She is also shown to be one of, if not the most talented mage in their class. However, she receives none of the praise that Sabrina does. In fact, Tissaia specifically sets up the first lesson so that the person who is the most successful at the spell is the one who suffers the consequences because she never tells her students about the dangers of the spell until Fringilla withers her hand.

The worst part of Fringilla’s hand? It isn’t fixed until her Ascension. FOUR YEARS LATER. Tissaia’s “lesson” (which wasn’t a lesson because the students didn’t have all the information) caused Fringilla pain and suffering for four years. Despite her hand, which must have been extremely painful judging by Fringilla’s cry when it happened, she remains the most powerful mage in her class.

You can see Fringilla’s hand both during the lightning scene and during the ascension scene.

It isn’t healed until the ball where Fringilla is dancing with King Virfuril and her left hand is no longer withered.

Once again, I ask, WHY did Tissaia have Fringilla spend four years in pain and suffering by something she directly caused and had the ability to fix?

On this same note, it’s important to note that Fringilla has a similar talent level to Sabrina, she never messes up and she always is at the top. Tissaia praises Sabrina but never does Fringilla to the same extent. In fact, Tissaia treats Fringilla similar to Yennefer where she degrades them both but there is one key difference: Tissaia wants to give Yennefer opportunities in court and wants her somewhere like Aedirn. Tissaia actively wanted to sabotage Fringilla.

When meeting with the council of mages, Tissaia pushes for Fringilla to be sent to Nilfgaard. As Fringilla is one of the most promising mages in her year, this is a very confusing choice. She outright says:

Vanielle of Brugge: King Fergus is proving to be an effective and excitable young king.

Stregobor: Horny, she means. Spending the kingdom’s money on women as his people starve to death.

Tissaia: Fringilla will be in Nilfgaard by week’s end. She will bring sanity and bread to the people.

Stregobor: Your girl is- With all due respect, [to Artorius] your niece is only capable of doing what she’s told.

Artorius: No ambitious mage wants to be assigned anywhere south of Sodden. But Nilfgaard needs correcting. Perhaps we consider sending someone there with a bit more… spine. Stregobor, did you have anyone in mind?

Tissaia chose to originally send Fringilla to Nilfgaard even though she expected Fringilla to basically rot there and have no upward mobility. Everyone agrees that Nilfgaard is a very bad place to be. When Yennefer thinks she is sent there she even tells Istredd:

Yennefer: Can your apology save me from Nilfgaard? Take me to Aedirn? Do they make me more than my blood?

Just to clarify: Yennefer should NOT have been sent to Nilfgaard and there is a whole other post to be made about elven macro and micro aggressions in the Witcher, but what’s important to understand here is that Tissaia specifically chose to send one of her most talented pupils to a kingdom with no mobility and a corrupt king.

As well, during the Ball when Fringilla sees Yennefer go with King Virfuril she looks terrified when she realizes that she is now being sent to Nilfgaard. Tissaia hands Fringilla off to her uncle Artorius Vigo and even though that shot clearly is meant to focus on Tissaia, shout-out to Mimi Ndiweni for going that hard on the acting.

So basically Fringilla was treated like shit for four years despite her talent, then used as a pawn in Tissaia and the overall Brotherhood’ schemes and she is a GREAT example of the characters that get left behind in the hero’s stories. Yes, it is an amazing thing that Yennefer gained autonomy and said fuck you to Tissaia by getting the Aedirn position but we dont often think about the characters that end up suffering becuase of these plot points such as Fringilla.

She was sent to Nilfgaard ill-prepared and we don’t know what happened there, but whatever occurred in the 50 years before Fringilla met the White Flame, it changed her enough that she was able to go from the sweet, quiet and caring girl we see in Aretuza to the hardened mage we see in Cintra.

While she was in Aretuza, Fringilla was belittled and cast aside at every turn. She was told that no matter how talented she was, she would never be supported or taken seriously. Is it any surprise that she turned away from the Brotherhood completely and rejected their beliefs? They rejected her first.

Fringilla has a classic corruption arc, comparable to the likes of Eve Polastri, Will Graham, Anakin Skywalker and Morgana Pendragon. We don’t know what caused her journey from hero to villain in canon because it hasn’t been shown on screen, but I hope they do, it would be very interesting to know!

In the meantime, I love coming up with various theories as to what Fringilla went through in Nilfgaard and have fallen deeper in love with her character than ever.

Artorius had a secret.

The twin of Camelot’s King--older by seven minutes, but once Arthur and Guinevere had wed, he had chosen to give his brother full right to rule--Prince of the Pendragon line, lauded warrior, commander of the kingdom’s knights and army, beloved by his men and his people just as much as his twin. With the life he led, there was little the man could want for.

And he had a secret. A secret companion, at that.

For quite some time--years, in fact, perhaps close to a decade--a creature of magic had been following him around, keeping him company, hidden from all but himself.

This creature? A tiny, lavender will-o’-the-whisp.

Just a tiny little ball of lavender light, warm as a summer’s day, that floated always just within his reach. The whisp even seemed to have a personality to match its warmth and its light. It spoke to him in a sort of bell-like voice, almost a song with every syllable. When others were near, the whisp darted to hide beneath Artorius’ collar, tinkling with soft laughter, like a mischievous child.

And the whisp protected him--not only from loneliness, but from physical danger as well. For such a small being, this little creature of magic was powerful.

Of course, Artorius’ martial prowess was nothing to scoff at. But there were dangers even he could not fight off on his own.

Dangers such as an attack from behind in the midst of a battle. A cowardly blow that ought to have been a mortal one.

Camlann.

That battle could easily have been Artorius’ last, had it not been for his secret friend.

Laughing in the face of Death, victory had been achieved. The Knights of Camelot set out on their journey home.

But the little whisp grew quiet, seeming almost...anxious.

When asked what was the matter, the whisp nuzzled up against Artorius’ cheek. “I must leave you now, Artie,” the little creature whispered. After years of constant companionship, the will-o’-the-whisp was leaving his side. “But worry not. We’ll meet again soon. No more than a year from now, for certain.”

And the whisp was gone.

Some months after the victory at Camlann, an announcement was made that the Queen was with child.

Half a year and a day from then, the new Heir was born: a beautiful baby girl, already with a full head of dark curls, bright green eyes, and a bell-like, pealing giggle.

Jenna Uther Pendragon.

Perhaps it was a trick of the light, but there was a brief flash of gold in the infant princess’ green eyes when she beheld her uncle for the first time. Upon being carefully handed to Artorius, little Jenna nuzzled into his shoulder and promptly fell asleep, calm and content as though she knew without a doubt that he would keep her safe.

Just a little ficlet inspired by a headcanon I came up with earlier today.

The idea of platonic soulmates has always been of interest to me, and the thought that Jenna and her uncle Artorius could be soulmates in that way just felt right. As did her being a little will-o’-the-whisp protecting him prior to her conception.

60. I Am in Love with you

It was a dark and stormy night in the Children of Auradon's camp.

And only two were stirring.

And those two?

Well, they were (tweleve year old) Artorius 'Artie' Pendragon, son of Hazel Guinevere and Arthur Pendragon, and (thirteen year old) Tulip Lampwick of the Tiger Tribe, daughter of Tiger Lily and Romeo 'Lampwick' Rossi.

And they had just gotten done with a wild week of non-stop pranks between the Neverlandians and the Camelotians. A wild week that left them near dead with exhaustion and laying on the floor of the cafeteria.

Breathing heavily along with their sleeping friends.

Tulip sighed. "I'm in love with you."

Artie snorted. "The prank war ended at midnight, dummy."

The red head weakly lifted her head and gave him an unimpressed look. "I know."

"Oh. Oh." The golden haired prince turned red.

Snickers broke around around them causing Tulip and Artie to scramble to their feet.

"PIN, ELEANOR-"

"GINGALAIN, STEPHANIE, DRAGONET, MORGIE!-"

"HAVE YOU BEEN AWAKE THE ENTIRE TIME?!"

The snickers turned into full onlaughter at this point.

"SHUT UP!"

More infos on Revival Rounds

After this Round ends we'll have a short hiatus from the main tournament for 4 one-day revival rounds. We will start with the losers of round 1 of the main tournament and work up from there until 4 characters comes on top and join the competition. It will be organised like this:

Round 1: 4 polls of 8 (32 round 1 losers)

-> top 2 of each poll go up (8 total)

Round 2: 4 polls of 6 (16 round 2 losers + 8)

-> top 2 of each poll go up (8 total)

Round 3: 4 polls of 4 (8 round 3 losers + 8)

-> top 2 of each poll go up (8 total)

Round 4: 4 polls of 3 (4 round 4 losers + 8)

-> top 1 of each poll go back to the main tournament for the quarter finales!
