Obviously he doesn’t go away even if Arthur ignores him so why bother? Glancing up he notices the dark bags under Merlin’s eyes, how gravity seems to pull at his body, almost as if it’s almost impossible for him to still be standing up but he’s doing it nonetheless by sheer force of will. The contrast between his cheerful speech and exhausted body does not go unnoticed.

“What’s wrong?” he asks, forcing himself to stay seated. Forcing himself not to touch every inch of Merlin’s body to be sure he is unharmed. Stopping himself from asking a million and one questions; unwilling to give himself away, even as he’s sure the love he suffers from is written upon his forehead for anyone to see.

“Where do I sit?”

Arthur doesn’t reply. Merlin looks away from the ceiling and back to where Arthur is lying next to him. Arthur, who is sound asleep, snoring, and paying no attention to Merlin's current emotional turmoil.

Admittedly, this isn’t that surprising considering it’s one in the morning.

Merlin has always felt somewhat responsible for the other serving staff in the castle, since he has been in service for longer than most of them by now. Therefore, he always sacrifices himself when less than desirable nobles come to visit the castle. He doesn't tell Arthur, though, seeing as the King already knows and turns a blind eye to everything that happens during his guests' stays in his castle's walls.
