When it cuts to him in the white t-shirt and he goes through all the posts on Blair’s alt account he sounded so sad it’s breaking my heart 😭, please someone get this man a hug and a cup of hot cocoa.
Blair keeps turning out to be more and more of an awful person each time i check back in on this situation, I feel bad for all of her fans who liked her, but mostly i just feel for the people she’s targeting, she needs help, and preferably a break from the internet for a good long while.

In light of iilluminaughtii's canceling,
I think the antiPeta and autism communities need themselves some better whistleblowers, or people who can summarize what's controversial and evil about these companies and why they shouldn't be trusted by those passionate about autism support and animal rights.
I especially don't trust Blair after learning she recently made a video called "vegans are killing the planet" or some shit like that.
Contrary to what some are going to think of me anyway, I am not antivegan. I know vegans who have been personally victimized by org like PeTA for not being vegan enough- and also it doesn't have to be a harmful thing if you know what you're doing and you're able to safely turn vegan if you want to. Vegans aren't the problem; people being bad faith actors about veganism is.
Disgustingly, I think I can guess exactly the kind of concerns Blair bring up in that vid: 1) soy and meat substitutes are environmentally taxing to grow and destructive, especially soy farms ,about as much as sometimes more than regular farming is destructive, and 2) synthetic wool is accelerating litter and microplastics.
I feel like, especially for vegans, these problems need to be known and dealt with before they get any worse-- but yeah I kinda DON'T trust that or really any PeTA counterfighting from a person who makes veganism itself out to be the problem. Bad sign. I don't know if he's pro-peta or even vegan but I hope Cid Dwyer steps up to the plate on this front. He's much better and more passionate about calling out bad animal care.
On a more personal level - we need a real video essayist to tackle autism speaks.
Blair's videos about Autism Speaks were what I linked my job specialists to in order to show them "no, it's not just me being untrustworthy that makes me hate that company. These people are hurting us, not helping us. Please don't support them"- and my specialists listened to that. Even if Blair's work is just regurgitating articles that state this better, it's one of those instances where people are never going to know the basics because they never are going to really look into it for themselves if they don't have someone else explain it to them.
Same thing goes with Salvation Army.
We need legitimate, well-sourced whistleblowers to help gear the winds of change. We don't need abusive grifters who are just content mills.

So I watched three James Somerton videos in my life. One was about The Owl House, one was about Luca and Falcon and The Winter Soldier (it was a video using both to illustrate how disney uses gay tropes to tell straight stories or something... i think? this guy's points manage to always be so muddled while absolute) and another I clicked not knowing what it was about based on title and then it turned out to be about M. Night Shyamalan's recent film I did not care about or had intentions see and didn't care I got spoiled.
So I didn't keep up with this guy and just moved on to watch videos from other creators or just plain fell off of watching videos when my life was falling apart. I forgot about him for the most part, but some of the things I remembered being iffy was as with iilluminaughtii (who at the time I watched James videos, I didn't know was plagiarizing from other mlm expose youtube creators and more thought she was lazily reading from articles that are other people's works for sure) had way too many videos pumped out in a short time of many media I feel it suspicious to consume and make long videos about. Another was his insistence TOH cancelation is on Bob Chapek's shoulders, that Hunter and Gus will be canon... There's the doublespeak he'd use that makes him come off as racist, aphobic and anti trans men and enbyphobic in the guise of old fashioned misogyny that's totes okay when a gay man says it... Just a lot of red flags I hoped he'd grow out of and do better if he wanted to stay in this game, but I was done watching his content. Instead he kept getting away with it, his subscribers grew, he kept stealing and plagiarizing and being all the things that set off alarm bells in my head and now we're here with a whole dossier of transgressions against many smaller creators. I hope he never comes back online as a content creator and stays in obscurity tbh. I hope the same for iilluminaughtii, but she's not stopped dragging her fight against her victims yet.
So my moral of the story here is, if a video essayist is pumping out too many videos, if their delivery is opaque, but said in absolutes, if their asides scream alarm bells of bigotry, then listen to yourself and don't doubt it, click away. Yes it's hard finding the buried gems on the platform who won't lie to you, spread historical disinformation, moralize with bigotry or steal other people's hard work. It is so tempting to just passively watch easy recced videos on a topic one cares about, but isn't an expert in. It is easy to believe if so many people watch this creator who speaks with an authoritive voice, calls out and finger wags a moralizing tone at the big guys, has even a bit of bite to them that makes them more than just a stodgy, dry fact checker, and all those watchers, subscribers, thumbs ups and algorithms mustn't be wrong right? Unfortunately they often are and it sucks. Let it be a lesson in curating your experience actively and not passively when you have energy and many of us are so tired it's a lot to ask, I know. Many of us will throw things in on the background and let the next video play while we're working or trying to sleep. I know I lost my energy to do what I'm asking others to do, but I should still do more to be vigilant anyway, let's all try.

oh and btw, help a fellow bi agender over here and rec me some youtubers/podcast/content lol that isn't crap
Podcasts: citations needed and i will say the dollop WITH the caveat that you need to understand the main dude involved is an anti-cop, anti-bigotry leftist but just... like if a historical piece he’s covering uses a slur, he’ll just fucking say it. he’s an older white dude so i won’t defend it but if you want history/modern commentary he’s pretty good at looking from a critical leftist lens.
book/reading podcasts: the stacks, reading glasses (they’re a bit... liberal but pretty good at inclusive recommendations)
triple click is a decent video game podcast that’s critical of industry practices and pretty inclusive but i think (not positive) everyone involved is white
i’m actually looking for more podcasts that aren’t just all/primarily white people so if anyone has recommendations for politics, video games (ps4/switch not pc/xbox if there’s a main focus), books, or i guessssss media like tv/film or more general stuff. no more true crime!!!
Youtubers:
News: Sxephil. Again, caveat that he’s pretty straightforwardly a white liberal who has grown a LOT as a person over the last decade in terms of politics and like... respecting people (so like anyone issuing a call out for him pre 2018 would probably be absolutely correct to do so) but if you want zippy, daily news that is fairly thoroughly fact checked (and will be correcter immediately) and involves heavier and lighter fare within 5-20 minutes... he’s decent. He’s good at keeping you up to date. I’m actually looking for other daily news people.
Booktube: Mina Reads. She mostly does romance novels and dabbles in scifi/fantasy at times, she’ll never have a hot take that pisses you off. Or at least hasn’t so far.
iilluminaughtii is an anti-mlm youtuber who tends to be informative and hasn’t said anything to piss me off yet
Caitlin Doughty is friends with Lindsay Ellis but that never comes up in her videos and she does a lot on death positivity--so like death rituals throughout history, understanding how dead bodies are handled during covid, suggesting green alternatives to normal burials, and she also does nice historic retellings of shit like the donner party
MelinaPendulum is ALSO friends with Lindsay, I’m pretty sure, and has some takes I do not like (like she’s friends with Reylos and I just... don’t like her takes on shipping in general) but she has really good media breakdowns and her perspective is always interesting to here, even when you disagree with it (like she did some weird in defense of Steven Universe-esque video that I didn’t agree with but enjoyed the perspective on). She’s good at calling out racism and misogyny and has her masters I think so like... she knows what she’s talking about.
This has literally nothing to do with anything but Flashbush Cats is a cat rescue youtube channel and if you wanna happy cry or learn how to get into fostering/TNR... they’re great
i’m looking for new anime review youtubers i watch mother’s basement but that’s just like one dude and... he’s fine. but i’d rather... not just have a dude telling me about anime? Get in the Robot does anime videos but I barely bother keeping up with them cause I don’t like their video format but maybe you’d like them
Renegade Cut has decent media analysis videos and is good at covering broader topics like capitalism in film or maybe how a single franchise desals with a theme like mental illness
“Babish Culinary Universe” has a Sohla cooking series if you liked her from bon appetit but no longer like bon appetit
Folding Ideas and  hmbomberguy are like quintessential “I hate everyone you hang out with but your videos are decent deep dives into media topics I never would have thought of.” Jack Saint is on a similar white guy has some spicy takes thread. Pop Culture Detective too.
If you want to recover from the white manliness of that bit, For Harriet provides amazing perspective on everything from politics to antiblack racism and how that intersects with misogyny to movie reviews with the same lens. She responds to a lot of stuff currently happening, whether it be the election or netflix movies like Cuties.
If you liked Cracked, Some More News has a lot of people from that with great leftist perspectives criticizing current events as they’re happening
Need to assert that for most of these, I do not follow them on other social media or watch all of their videos. I do not sign on to anything and everything they’v’e said, I’ve just had generally positive experiences with them. Most of them have flaws.
That said--I want more youtubers. Good topics: media analysis, anime reviews/deep dives, responses to current events, video game break downs, or idk... just video essays on random shit like I just watcched an entire video on how hyperpop might be the future of music by MicTheSnare

August 1, 2021
I can't believe that it's already been a month since this journey began. It's been a month since my disaster of an appointment with my primary doctor (who, honestly, I haven't been back to see since. Oops) and walked out with a prescription for Lexapro. Sometime next week, it will have been a month since I started talking to a therapist and unlearning all of the things that I have spent all of my life essentially holding together with scotch tape, hope, and a smidgen of denial.
There have definitely been some highs as these weeks have progressed and, currently, I'm finding myself in the middle of a string of "sad girl/big emotion" days. Thankfully, these days haven't been anything that I couldn't handle through either talking about them (!!!!!) with someone important to me or utilizing one of the ACCEPTS tactics to help break myself out of it (examples being the lasagna I made the other day, burying myself in iilluminaughtii's anti-MLM Mondays videos, and drinking enough La Croix flavored sparkling waters to fill a small kiddie pool).Over these past few days, I've cried, I've laughed, I've gotten lost in my thoughts for a few hours but, above all, I've felt seen. I've felt heard. I'm slowly starting to allow myself to feel the value that all of you place in me -- though I'm also very, very stubborn and I don't seem to allow myself to have nice things for very long, so I'm not going to go full-on celebratory *just* yet.
I still feel lonely at times and others I feel like I'm defective or a much, much smaller version of myself now that I've begun the process of tearing down these walls so I can build myself back up. Everything is so scary and overwhelming and, sometimes, I wish I could just fast forward through all of this so I can see my end result -- but I know the journey is what makes me. The journey is part of the process, and I need to allow myself to be raw and vulnerable and to feel uncomfortable. I need to feel all of the things and not shut myself off like I've gotten so used to doing. It's all going to be worth it in the end. I just need to allow the time to let things unfold.
Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was I, but we can both be equally magnificent in time.
