God, I remember the hype for this performance. He was performing after a long time and everyone was loosing it. And rightfully, have you seen the man dance?? that grace, uff.

4) Shahrukh Khan - 2011
If anyone thought there would be a list of award performances without Shahrukh Khan in it- they don't know me well enough - and that needs to immediately change. This man here is my first love. His wit, charm, elegance, humor in speaking.
As a dancer- he ain't gonna pop it lock and it but he has something that's essential to dance that some people who are even technically good don't have - grace.
In this video when he removed his glares- i squealed. Like i said, first love.

5)Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan and THE Amitabh Bachchan - IIFA 2005
Okay-so context time.
Bunty aur Babli was a super hit movie in 2005 with the entire album having bops after bops. And Kajra Re was THE bop- it is, too date played in wedding functions. But then? You couldn't have a complete programme without that song. School annual day? Kajra re. Buildings new year part? It was there. Water parks? Duh.
And it was rumored Abhishek and rani broke up and Abhishek and Aishwarya - Miss India - started dating. So them performing it on a programme had created enough buzz as it is but then AMITBAH FREAKING BACHAN walks in - please, I am not even a huge fan of his but even I lost it.

Hello, do you have any desi movie recommendations for a european such as myself? And do you know where to find such movies with english subtitles?
I've always lived the short bits of desi movies I've seen on gifs and stuff but i wouldn't know where to start. I'm a big fan of romcom if it helps narrow down your recommendations. Thank you!!
Oh hey! These are the underrated Telugu film recommendations that I already posted on here, they're underrated but they're definitely worth the watch (ig they have subtitles on the streaming platforms I mentioned and most of them are rom coms). I'm mostly a curator of hindi, english and telugu films so you might find others recommending other language or more films💗

1.
Krishna Gaadi Veera Prema Gaadha (Telugu)
(it's available on Amazon Prime with subtitles, kindly check if it's the same in your country) - it's a comedy of errors that takes root in the protagonist willing to do anything for the girl he loves. Even drive her nieces and nephew across state with a slew of gangsters on his tail.

Black (Hindi)
(Rani Mukherjee and Amitabh Bachchan) - I have no words for this movie... It's a piece of art is all I can say. It's not a romcom though, it's like the Hellen Keller case but make it Indian. If you're venturing into desi movies, it'd be a wonderful experience to enter the art this way.

Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (Hindi)
This has a star studded cast and omg it's made our childhood over here in India. It has cute dance numbers and celebrations. It's a pakka romcom/family drama movie and you'll be addicted to the theme song that plays literally every 10 seconds

Dil Chahta Hai (Hindi)
A story about 3 friends who find love all in their own way. A heartfelt movie about friendship and how each perceives love.
5.
Dil Dhadakne Do (Hindi)
Partly a romcom but full time chaotic family drama but more refined lol. It's about a rich emotionally-broken fam roaming Greece on a cruise in an anniversary party of the parents.
6.
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara - If you haven't been out in a while, this movie will give you all the FOMO of the world lol. Three friends (again haha) set out to roam Spain for a bachelor's trip and find themselves. It's like a fest for the eyes (and i'm not just talking about the sceneries 🙈)
7.
Hello
(it's on disney hotstar?) A heartfelt romance of a boy and a girl's happenstance of a friendship. They cherish the short memories before they are torn apart from each other and years later, they meet each other without knowing who the other is.
8.
Oohalu Gusagusalaade
A romcom/comedy of errors where our protagonist has the bad luck of having to help his boss get a girl, only that girl turns out to be his first love. (I linked the movie available on youtube, it has english subtitles)
9.
English Vinglish
(not a romcom, so sorry, but it's a must watch with all the right emotions) Our protagonist is looked down upon by her family for not knowing English. When she goes abroad for her niece's wedding, she makes sure to learn the language that would make them consider her one of them.

Dear Zindagi
(you can rent it on youtube or watch on netflix maybe?) more of a find-yourself film again, but this is so relatable and heartfelt... a successful cinematographer visits a psychologist for therapy and he helps her see her life in a new way. Starring Alia Bhatt and Shah Rukh Khan. Must watch Indian film

Jab We Met
Honestly if you don't watch this, i have failed you. This is the story that basically defined 2/3rd of every desi girl's personality. Aditya is a suicidal millionaire with no hopes on life. He meets Geet, an over-enthusiastic girl with a peculiar outlook on fate. One missed train and a brothel later, his life turns for the better. (the songs HIT and so does the ship, it's just iconic, this is called positive romance)

Nuvvu Naaku Nachav
(i have no idea where you can find it but when you do, i promise you the jokes are funny. they're the real telugu comedy if i may so) an unemployed Venky moves into his father's friend's house. It is here he starts falling for the friend's daughter, who might or might not be engaged. (no physical cheating)

Barfi!
I saved the best for last😎 This masterpiece can be found on Netflix with english subtitles. It's a romcom/comedy of errors/fucking heartfelt love story. It will make you cry if you're engrossed. Barfi, a man who cannot hear or speak, meets his autistic childhood friend Rimjhim when he wants to kidnap her for money. (it is NOT stockholm syndrome) If you do not watch this movie, I might as well cry🥺🥺

Kaalia: The "Angry Young Man"
Let's talk about Tinnu Anand's Kaalia.
Released in 1981, the plot revolves around Kaalia, who is jailed after robbing his brother's employer. Leaving prison more hardened than before, Kaalia seeks revenge against the employer for ultimately causing his brother's death.
This movie is quintessential old Bollywood, following the classic tropes present in that time period (wealthy evil villain, damsel in distress, hero you root for). Kaalia also balances the elements of the Bollywood formula (action + comedy + romance) without any sort of overexaggeration.
Kaalia is filled with a casting list that is instantly recognizable to any longtime consumer of Bollywood classics: Amitabh Bachchan, Parveen Babi, Amjad Khan, and Pran. In their time, the first two actors were famous for playing protagonists, while the latter two always played villain roles (although in Kaalia, Pran plays a good guy. Scary, but ultimately good.)
The music, composed by R.D. Burman, is filled with many evergreen songs sung by legends like Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, and Mohammed Rafi. Here are three for your listening pleasure:

★ Devapriya Sanyal’s Salman Khan The Man The Actor The Legend review: Decoding Salman Khan
July 2022
Steering clear of the actor's controversial life, a new biography focuses on India’s notion of stardom and celebrity instead
A recent bout of illness and feeling all round wretched had me turning to my favourite comfort food — Hindi movies (I refuse to call them Bollywood movies) from the 1990s. That I was simultaneously reading Devapriya Sanyal’s Salman Khan The Man The Actor The Legend, a deconstruction of bhai’s celebrity, proved an adequate road map to my film choices...
Rather than start with Salman Khan’s big, fat blockbuster, Maine Pyaar Kiya(1989), I chose Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!(1994), also directed by Sooraj Barjatya (who had made his directorial debut with Maine Pyaar Kiya). The film, which cemented Khan as a bonafide star, actually gave his co-star, Madhuri Dixit, higher billing, a fact which Sanyal’s book
Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! unlike that other game-changer of the ‘90s, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), has not aged well, Dixit’s phulkari-inspired jacket notwithstanding. The film plays out like a loosely strung together series of incidents, songs and comic interludes. How is a dog playing an umpire at a cricket match supposed to be funny is one of those unsolved mysteries. And while we are on the topic, hope Tuffy, the dog, was treated right on set.
Defence of toxicity
Sanyal’s book mostly steers clear of all the scandals and controversies that followed Khan like faithful shadows. While there is mention of the 2002 hit-and-run case, his tumultuous relationship with Aishwarya Rai and its fallout, and the blackbuck hunting and Arms Act violations cases, the book focuses on decoding Khan and India’s notion of stardom and celebrity through his career.
What little we glimpse of Khan is through his good friend Kailash Surendranath’s reminiscences. Surendranath, who knew Khan from his days as an eager 15-year-old getting his first break in modelling for Campa Cola (remember?) to his decade-spanning superstardom, remembers Khan dropping by for late night paratha-bhurji (scrambled eggs) and his motto for working on his body — “When you have no work, work on yourself.”
An introduction sets out what Sanyal intends to do through the book in great detail. The shortest chapter is the one called ‘With Human Failings’, which lists Khan’s headline-grabbing misbehaviour. His public brawls and brushes with the law are explained away as the cost of celebrity, which does not cut much ice as one cannot sweep bad and outright criminal behaviour under the carpet of “boys will be boys”. The book is at its weakest when trying to defend Khan’s toxicity.
An engaging journey
On the other hand, Sanyal’s book is its most engaging when deconstructing Khan through his roles especially in the chapter, ‘The Journey from Prem to Chulbul Pandey’. The chapter introduces the concept of the Emploi, “a theoretical framework as developed by Erving Goffman in his book, Frame Analysis.” The emploi, Sanyal posits “is a category that accounts for the close interaction between performance and reception.”
Just as Amitabh Bachchan’s angry young man was invariably called Vijay (is his Jai in Sholay a diminutive for Vijay?) and Shah Rukh Khan’s many versions of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’s Raj went towards building an on-screen persona, so too does Salman’s Prem emploi create a film version of Salman Khan.
Sanyal traces Khan’s development through his 15 different portrayals of Prem. From the slender, doe-eyed Prem of Maine Pyar Kiya, the naughty ‘devar’ Prem in Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, the Prem who sets things right in Hum Saath-Saath Hain (1999) and the slightly dim-witted Prem of Andaz Apna Apna (1994), who nevertheless gets the girl to the tongue-in-cheek narrator Prem of Ready (2011), the cheating-on-his wife Prem of No Entry (2005), the dating guru Prem of Partner (2007) and the travelling theatre artiste Prem of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo(2015), in his fourth collaboration with Barjatya.
Since the chapter details Khan’s journey from Prem to Chulbul Pandey, there is an analysis of the characters he played who are not named Prem, including Akash in that slightly cringy but melodious triangle Saajan (1991), Sameer in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s exotically colourful Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), the obsessed lover, Radhe Mohan in Tere Naam (2003), the tapori Radhe in Wanted (2009), Devil in Kick (2014), Bajrangi in Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) and Tiger in Ek Tha Tiger (2012) and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), Laxman in Tubelight(2017) Sultan in and as Sultan (2021), and of course the corrupt but loveable cop Chulbul Pandey in the Dabangg movies.
Sanyal, who teaches English literature at the University of Delhi, has written a thesis on the anatomy of fame with academic rigour— right down to how Khan’s perfect body also contributes to his iconography. Wish the book was better proofed as there are silly errors that grate coming on the back of such a well-researched book.
All looking for salacious details of Khan’s life will be disappointed while those seeking the magic in the bottle of stardom will not. And I am going back to watching Khan fight off the evil Crime Master Gogo in the delightful Andaz Apna Apna.

Remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s classic Bawarchi gets writer-director; Anushree Mehta to helm the adaptation
Known for directing Radhika Apte starrer Mrs Undercover, Anushree Mehta is gearing up to take the modern day adaptation of the classic Bawarchi on floors.
The chef is back and is ready to cook up a storm. Filmmaker Anushree Mehta, who made her debut with the Radhika Apte starrer Mrs Undercover last year, has now come on board to direct the Hindi remake of the loved 1972 classic Bawarchi, which was originally helmed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
The family comedy drama featured an ensemble led by actors Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Bachchan and Asrani, among others. Bawarchi was a remake of Rabi Ghosh starrer 1966 Bengali film Galpo Holeo Satti by Tapan Sinha.
The adaptation of the Hrishikesh Mukherjee feature will be the first movie out of the three-film collaboration between Jaadugar Films and Sameer Raj Sippy Productions. They will also remake timeless classics like Amitabh Bachchan-Jaya Bachchan starrer Mili (1975) and Gulzar's iconic 1972 drama Koshish.
Anushree Mehta described directing the Bawarchi adaptation as a "kaleidoscopic combination" of being excited, honoured, humbled coupled with the awareness of shouldering a "massive responsibility."
She said, "When my business partner Abir Sengupta (Jaadugar Films), Sameer Raj Sippy and I decided to join hands to produce these three iconic films, we were clear that we would leave no stone unturned in remaking them with utmost love and respect. During our discussion on Bawarchi, Abir and Sameer were of the opinion that I should be writing and directing the remake.”
She added, "They were convinced that I would be able to tell the story in a manner which would make them proud. We were in sync with our vision and I whole heartedly agreed to come board as the writer-director."
Remaking a loved classic such as Bawarchi naturally comes with a huge responsibility, but Anushree said that the adaptation would echo her "confidence, honesty and sensitivity."
"The idea of retelling a film is to adapt it according to the current times and make it more relatable to the world we live in today—while keeping the soul and purpose of the original intact. Since Bawarchi itself was a remake of a Bengali film, Hrishida in his time recreated it and made it relatable to that era. My attempt is going to be with a similar intention, to retell the classic story of Bawarchi in a way that the family audiences of all age groups can watch and enjoy the movie together. I'm aiming to create a wholesome, unforgettable family experience," she added.
Anushree Mehta has finished writing the Bawarchi adaptation and hopes to get the film on floors in 2024. Casting of the film is underway, with makers looking to lock an A list star.

GANAPATH MOVIE TEASER OUT: TIGER SHROFF IS SEEN IN A FIERY LOOK
On Wednesday, Tiger Shroff’s upcoming Ganapath movie teaser was released. In the teaser, Tiger Shroff released the movie date on his forearm. Ganpath is directed by Vikram Behl. It will also be dubbed and released in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.
In the 35-second teaser, Tiger Shroff can be seen in a fierce avatar. In the teaser, Tiger Shroff says that “I don’t like fighting, I am thinking which of the two should I eliminate”.
