Which artist do you think portrays Shizuo the closest to your vision of the character? Thank you and have a nice day!
ooooh this is a good question. there are a lot of amazing designs for him that call to me as shizuo on different levels and that’s the beauty of art! i could go on and on about each manga artist’s portrayals of him and fanartists’ unique art styles and how one captures the best warm smile or scowl or hair tufts or sad brown eyes to me. there’s just. so much to love.
but i'm too shy to tag my fave fanartists and the shizuo i see when i think about him has been yasuda for a long time.
i have beef with how he developed several of his other designs but to me he far and away does the best job at bringing narita’s description of shizuo to life. i've seen a lot argument over narita’s design choice (that i'm not sure how much is genuine?) but each passage written about his appearance is filled with intention and it shapes and means the world to me. :)
Tumblr media
bc beyond his height everything about him screams and should scream Most Normal Guy Ever.
even how he presents himself is said to make him appear like he’s playing dress up as someone imposing than actually being imposing. and that’s the kicker. once he’s seen in action he goes from being an unassuming person that anyone with the slightest bit of fighting prowess believes they can take out to the most terrifying person in the room for the exact same reason.
Tumblr media
suddenly those traits that make him no different than the next guy become the traits that place him Starkly Outside Normalcy. every part of his design is etched with purpose. he’s lanky without visible muscle bc his body and power and character brute force past logic, he wears sunglasses to hide how soft his eyes are remarked to be, his bleached hair and bartender getup come from those he respects and he uses them all to create an identity to warn others off bc nothing else about him does UNTIL he makes it known how out of the mold of conventionality a freak of nature like him is. then everything clicks into place.
unrelated but it’s not mentioned in the anime that shizuo’s anime-typical vein throbbing is an uncanny phenomenon remarked on by various characters with izaya even saying most would think it’s due to a medical condition which is such a hilarious creative choice that i love to bits.
narita put SO much thought into his character design to the point where every facet of it is tied into his narrative and even slight alterations can detract from that. it makes every one really resonate with me and you can feel that attention to detail that yasuda does with shizuo too. any artist that incorporates all those components into their design of him care for him and his character a great deal which has had the most impactful effect on me. and that amount of care is almost impossible to replicate beyond the artist who was first tasked with drawing him.
(satorigi akiyo is a very close second tho. yasuda is obviously more limited in the amount he draws but she gives shizuo a greater range of expressions even for the same emotion and honestly yasuda walked so she could run in every other capacity but i can not and will not forgive her for giving shizuo blue eyes.)

Ramble#12 - Delinquency
This month's episode is on delinquent manga, a pretty dope but unfortunately pretty dead genre. That may just be my underexposure speaking but it seems to me that the delinquent pipeline seems to get dryer and dryer every year.
I was hoping to find a bunch of new rad delinquent manga this month but honestly it was a pretty weak month for reads but nonetheless let's get into it
top 5 delinquent manga read this month:
#5) Wolf Guy: Ookami no Monshou by Tabata Yoshiaki (complete with 117 chapters, I only got 56)
Tumblr media
Just gotta say right off the bat, even though I haven't finished either wolf guy or akumetsu by the same author I very much prefer akumetsu [spoken on before in ramble#4, Mystery, Madness & Mayhem]
Regardless the premise here in wolf guy, is basically that there's this guy that turns into something wolf like (yes a werewolf) and how his nature seems to attract bad news
My main problem with the series is how much they ask you to suspend your belief as the students are in middle school and are closer to terrorism than delinquency, it gets very very wild, a little too wild for me, fairly solid art but I would warn folks to approach with major caution if they decide to pick this up
#4) OUT by tatsuya iguchi (ongoing with 206 English chapters)
Basically the story here is a dude just got out of juvie and has to avoid trouble so he moves out of town to the sticks, and if that had played out well for him there'd be no story here. So ofc one of the first things that happens is him getting into a fight with the VP of the top gang in the area.
Luckily delinquents tend to respect guts and nobody else was around so that played out well enough for him except now he's wrapped up in the arguments of the local gangs who are on the brink of war.
My main problem with OUT is that the camaraderie usually present in delinquent manga is almost non-existent here, no vibes, just violence. I will say it's got pretty decent art, and a number of pretty neat spreads.
#3) Bakuon Rettou by Tsutomu Takahashi (complete with 105 chapters, I read 46)
Tumblr media
Basically this one dude just didn't like boredom or the normal life or something so he got involved in a biker gang as if extracurricular activities didn't exist or something.
We follow this guy through his outward and internal changes as he gets deeper and deeper into the gang.
I was really excited to get to this because of the author but I was pretty disappointed in the end, maybe because I only got halfway but at least they had the same old beautiful art I had expected.
#2) Tokyo Revengers by Ken Wakui (complete with 279 chapters + an anime)
Tumblr media
Fairly popular so you may have heard of it, the story goes that the main character goes back in time to save his crush by joining the gang that kills her in the future, with the goal of becoming their leader so he can prevent his crush's death.
not gonna lie I really dug it in the beginning, the premise was a two punch combo of things I loved, I mean time travel + delinquency? In any case idk my love for it just petered out, then the ending was a bit wack, crazy style on almost every character tho.
#1) Durarara!! story by Ryougo Narita and art by Akiyo Satorigi
Tumblr media
Best thing I read this month, a bit surprised since I'd already watched the anime way back when but it was still super great.
The story is that a young lad named mikado ryuugamine moves to the big city of ikebukuro for high school in an attempt to shake off his normal day to day life. He meets up with his childhood best friend masaomi kida who shows him around town and gives him all the details of strange tales, urban myths and living legends.
The story is broken up into durarara, durarara saika arc, durarara yellow scarves arc & durarara re; dollars each about 20 - 30 chapters long
top 5 delinquent manga read ever: (I go off cuff for these so no transcript, but dude trust me)
#5) Kyou kara ore wa!! by Hiroyuki Nishimori (366 chapters)
Tumblr media
#4) Beelzebub by Ryuuhei Tamura (252 chapters)
Tumblr media
#3) Holyland by Kouji Mori (182 chapters)
Tumblr media
#2) Rookies by Morita masanori (233 chapters)
Tumblr media
#1) Clover by Tetsuhiro Hirakawa (401 chapters)
Tumblr media
honourable mention: great teacher onizuka gto
thanks for listening, if you'd like to see specific scores my anilist is in the link above and additionally there's a small off cuff part 2 in the episode where I talk a little bit more about what I like about the delinquent genre

Durarara Anime - What Makes Its Fans Stick Around
Tumblr media
Durarara anime is a Japanese adaptation series based on the light novel series written by Ryohgo Narita and illustrated by Suzuhito Yasuda with the same name. Produced by studio Shuka, the anime consists of three seasons, each comprising 12 episodes. The story takes place in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, where many strange rumors and anonymous gangs are lurking. One of the most famous urban legends is the existence of the "Black Rider," who has no head and rides a black motorcycle.
Plot
The anime follows the story of various characters who are involved in events related to the Black Rider and other mysteries. The series is filled with action, drama, and comedy, and features a wide cast of characters with unique personalities and backgrounds. Some of the notable characters include Celty Sturluson, the Black Rider who is searching for her missing head; Mikado Ryuugamine, a transfer student who becomes the founder and leader of the Dollars; and Izaya Orihara, an information broker who loves chaos and manipulation. Durarara!! also explores themes such as identity, friendship, and love in the midst of the chaotic and unpredictable world of Ikebukuro. The series has gained a large fan following due to its unique storytelling, engaging characters, and distinctive animation style.
The Diverse Genre of Durarara!! Anime
Tumblr media
Durarara!! is a series that caters to a wide range of genres, from action, mystery, comedy, romance, supernatural, and even school life. But wait, there's more! It is also considered to be a part of the "urban fantasy" genre, which means that it combines elements of fantasy with a modern city background. So, not only do you get a thrilling story, but you also get a unique setting that will keep you on the edge of your seat. But that's not all. The creators of Durarara!! also love to reference and parody other popular works of fiction, such as Baccano!, Star Wars, Death Note, and more. This makes the series even more enjoyable for fans who are familiar with these works. You'll be delighted to find easter eggs and nods to your favorite characters and moments.
Durarara Anime vs Manga vs Light Novel: What’s the Difference?
If you’re a fan of Durarara!!, you may have noticed that the story has been told through different mediums, such as light novels, manga, and anime. But what exactly is the difference between these forms of storytelling? Let’s break it down: Light Novel:
Tumblr media
- Durarara!! started off as a light novel series, which is a type of Japanese novel that targets young adult readers. - It is typically illustrated and contains less words compared to a regular novel. - Durarara!! light novel series consists of 13 volumes that were published from 2004 to 2014. - The light novel tells the story in a more detailed and descriptive way compared to the manga and anime adaptations. Manga:
Tumblr media
- Durarara!! was also adapted into a manga series, which is a type of Japanese comic book. - The manga was illustrated by Akiyo Satorigi (for the first three arcs) and Aogiri (for the fourth arc). - The manga was serialized in Monthly GFantasy from June 2009. - The manga follows the same story as the light novel, but with some minor changes and adaptations. Anime:
Tumblr media
- Durarara!! was adapted into an anime series produced by Studio Shuka. - The anime has three seasons, each consisting of 12 episodes. - The anime follows the same story as the light novel and manga, but there are some added, changed, and removed scenes and characters to fit the pacing of the medium. - The anime brings the characters and story to life through animation, voice acting, and music. So there you have it - the difference between light novel, manga, and anime. Whether you prefer reading, watching, or both, Durarara!! has something for everyone.
Why Durarara!! Is a Must-Watch Anime?
Tumblr media
This anime is a masterpiece that will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting more. One of the reasons I love Durarara!! is because of its unique and diverse cast of characters. From Celty, the headless rider, to Izaya, the master manipulator, each character has their own quirks and motivations that keep the story interesting. I also enjoy the way the characters interact with each other and get involved in the various conflicts that arise throughout the series. But it's not just the characters that make Durarara!! great. The animation style is dynamic and colorful, bringing the bustling city of Ikebukuro to life. The music is also top-notch and helps set the tone for each scene. Another reason I highly recommend Durarara!! is because of its storytelling. The series is full of twists and turns, making it impossible to predict what will happen next. It keeps you engaged and guessing until the very end.
My Favorite Episode in Durarara!!
Tumblr media
Durarara!! is a series that has many exciting and memorable episodes, making it hard to pick just one favorite. However, if I had to choose, I would say that episode 11 of the first season, titled "Storm and Stress," is definitely one of the most thrilling and unforgettable episodes of the entire series. In this episode, we get to see a truly epic battle between two of the show's most iconic characters, Shizuo and Izaya. The fight is intense and action-packed, and it really showcases the incredible power and skill of both characters. What's more, we also get to see a deeper and more complex side to both Shizuo and Izaya, as we learn more about their motivations, personalities, and histories. Apart from the incredible fight scene, episode 11 also has a lot of other great moments that make it stand out. There are plenty of funny and lighthearted scenes, such as when Celty tries to teach Shinra how to cook, or when the members of the Dollars have a picnic in the park. There are also some really tense and dramatic moments, like when Anri discovers the truth about her past, or when Mikado realizes the true nature of the Dollars. Overall, I think episode 11 of Durarara!! is a perfect blend of action, comedy, and drama, with a great story, memorable characters, and lots of exciting moments. It's an episode that I could watch over and over again and never get tired of, and I think it's a great example of why Durarara!! is such a beloved and iconic anime series. Read the full article

10 Manga Recommendations for Quarantine (or any other time)
People seemed to like my previous recs, so I thought I’d do a few more while so many of you are stuck home with some free time to kill. I don’t read a lot of manga these days, and my tastes are somewhat ecclectic, but hopefully there’ll be something in here for you.
20th Century Boys - Naoki Urasawa
Tumblr media
Kenji didn’t like that a new doomsday cult had started recruiting in his neighbourhood, but he wasn’t going to do anything about it. As least until a letter from an old friend leads him to realise that the cult’s symbols and mythology are based on a children’s story. A story he and his friends made up thirty years ago. Now he must track down people he hasn’t seen since middle school as he desperately tries to remember which of his friends knew the story... and figure out which of them is leading the cult.
This isn’t just the best manga I’ve ever read, it’s one of the best stories full stop. Even if you think you hate manga, I urge you to give this a try.
Claymore - Norihiro Yagi
Tumblr media
Claire was never supposed to be a Claymore. But when Theresa of the faint smile saved her life as a child, she knew there was no other path for her. With few of the supernatural powers granted to her sisters, she struggles to survive as a monster hunter in a brutal world where death is always waiting.
This was serialised in Shounen Jump originally, and it shows in places, but mostly this is a compelling drama, with some of the most startlingly beautiful and horrible monster design in all of fantasy and scifi.
Drrr!!! - Ryohgo Narita (illustrated by Akiyo Satorigi)
Tumblr media
Nothing in Ikebukero is quite what it seems. The Russian Mafia sell the best sushi in town, demons are haunting the chatrooms, there’s a new gang on the streets, and if you’re really unlucky, you might just meet the Black Rider. They say its bike whinnies like a horse. They say it killed three men who tried to kidnap a girl. They say it has no head. They say... that it just wants to do the job and get paid like everyone else.
Drrr!!! is an experience. It blends fantasy and realism in ways I’ve very rarely seen done, and delights in subverting your expectations. Characters who appears to fit into archetypes any manga fan will recognise never turn out to be quite who you think they are, just as the story never quite goes where you expect it to.
Petshop of Horrors - Matsuri Akino
Tumblr media
Do you want a protector? A companion? A friend? A lover? A child? Whatever you need, Count D has the perfect pet for you (even if they don’t always look like animals). Just remember to read the small print, very very carefully.
While there is, sort of, an overarching plot, these books are portmanteu horror in the old style, a series of barely connected unsettling stories strung together by a shared narrator and a handful of recurring characters. Spoopy more than genuinely spooky, and occaisionally surprisingly touching, this is a great series to dip in and out of.
Death Note - Tsugumi Ohba (illustrated by Takeshi Obata)
Tumblr media
“Let's just say this: you will feel the fear and pain known only to humans who've used the notebook. And when it's your time to die, it will fall on me to write your name in my death note. Be warned any human who's used a Death Note can neither go to heaven nor hell for eternity. That's all.“
One of the very rare examples where the source material does live up to (almost all) the hype. Clever, dark, surprisingly apolitical, and just the right amount of very very cheesy.
Tokyo Ghoul - Sui Ishida
Tumblr media
Keneki Ken was an extremely ordinary guy, living an extremely ordinary life... right up until the girl he fancied tried to eat him. Now he’s part of the world of Ghouls, struggling to hold on to what’s left of his humanity as all his old moral certainties are stripped away from him. Ghouls are people, they have hopes and dreams and loves and they deserve the right to live just like anyone else. It’s just that to live, they have kill humans.
Did you want to be cool and edgy as a teenager but you never quite had the guts to do it? Congratulations, Tokyo ghoul is for you. Think of it as emergency rations for your inner Goth.
Black Cat - Kentaro Yabuki
Tumblr media
Sometimes a family is a legendary hitman on the run from his past, his mysterious boyfriend, a recovering child soldier, and the bisexual thief who keeps inviting herself into their lives.
Okay technically Train and Sven aren’t a couple. Technically. Rins is canon bi though so that’s cool. This book is a lovely little time capsule of the days when shonen manga was inexplicably full of bounty hunters with bizarre superpowers going on wacky adventures, and I love it for that. Plus it’s full of that good-good found family trope and we could all do with a bit more of that in our lives.
Beauty Pop - Kiyoko Arai
Tumblr media
Kiri Koshiba is no ordinary teenager. She has a secret, something she hides from even those closest to her. The only ones who know about her special abilities are those she rescues. You see Kiri is secretly... really good at giving haircuts.
This is a deeply silly book, full of deeply silly characters, in which hairdressing is treated with the exact same seriousness that sports animes treat basketball or tennis, and reading it just makes me smile. Sometimes when the world’s a bit shit you just want to read about an undercover hairdresser helping girls with their self confidence and giving them rad haircuts.
Bizenghast - M. Alice LeGrow
Tumblr media
Dinah Wherever is more goth than you. She’s got the wardrobe, and the doomed love, and non-specific mental health issues. Oh, and she’s enslaved to Bizenghast, cursed to spend her nights laying to rest the unquiet spirits that haunt the graveyard there and if she fails, she’ll loose her life... or something worse.
The first volume is definitely the standout in this short series, with stunning artwork and detailed world building, but all of it is a fun, creepy, surprisingly dark story, full of the author’s love for old school gothic romance.
The Wallflower - Tomoko Hayakawa
Tumblr media
Mine Nakahara is concerned that her neice Sunako is never going attract a wealthy husband with a mysterious heart condition if she doesn’t learn not to be such a shut in. So in desperation, she turns to the only obvious solution - give four well-meaning himbos rent free accomodation in exchange for them teaching Sunako to wash, wear something other than sweatpants, and talk about anything that isn’t horror movies.
Sometimes you don’t want drama, or angst, or deep plot. Sometimes it’s enough to watch four attractive and deeply stupid men try to teach the human equivilent of an angry raccoon how to walk in heels.

Satorigi’s style will be missed by me -thus a pathetic attempt to redraw. Cause: why cover Namie’s face by a speech bubble???

P.S. messed up with shadowing her skirt...
