1: Does Whiff wear glasses like humans or just near sighted without wearing one?: He still wears glasses actually! Here's a very very rough concept for him.

Sorry for the super bright green line art. Lol. Whiff a Swamp Drake! A wingless dragon species, that loves the cool murky swamp waters. He does smell pretty funky because he's in the swamp all the time.🤣

2: Who’s the fastest flying dragon?: Oof. That's a tough one. Out of the main cast, I would say Gordon. But, outside the group, I'd say there's quite a few dragons that could rival his speed. Like The Flying Scotsman.

3: Got anything to share about Nia?

OH MY GOSH Yes yes yes I do!!! Here she is! A beautiful African Painted Wyvern! One of the few wyvern species that's primarily a quadruped!

I've been wanting to share about her for SO long! She lives in the African wilderness, with her clan! Well, she used to. Unfortunately, there's not many of her kind left. Just like any other dragon species, human interference was slowly destroying her kind. Especially with the threat of poaching. And eventually, she was alone. But not for long! She eventually end's up joining Thomas's clan, and moving to Sodor!

Also, I actually have a little something for her and James planned. I always found it interesting that they were implied to be close in BWBA. (Wild, right?🤣) So, I might be doing a little something with that... ;)

4: What’s the dynamic between James and Percy?: I would say that in the first few stories, they definitely pick on each other. Percy is a cheeky, outspoken, and very confident young dragon. And James is well... ✨James.✨ Lol. So their personalities do clash a bit at first. But eventually, they became close. Especially after Tale Of The Brave. Percy is like James and Thomas's baby brother and they will both protect him at all costs.

5: How long can dragons live?: Hmmm. That's a good question. Looking at the original series, and how long the engines can live, I'd say that they can live way past 100, as long as they have a safe place to live. Some can even be thousands of years old! Like Hiro!

6: What’s Gordon’s biggest fear?: Being alone. Definitely. He might not be able to express himself properly. But the man lost almost his entire family/species. If he lost his new one, I think he would just break. :(

7: How did Henry overcome his illness or did he ever overcome it?: Okay! So this is an interesting one! He hasn't actually gotten rid of it. He just learned how to work with it. One being his back left leg, which is uh... Gone?😅 A very bad accident happened...😬 ANYWAYS, he has a prosthetic that he makes with his plant powers out of wood, so he can get around. (Henry's New Shape baby!😆😂) It's made of living material, and connected to the Earth. So it's like he never lost anything! His other thing is he has arthritis. I felt this fit well, because some older animals get this and it just seemed to work best out of all the options. He did learn a few ways of reliving the pain though. Being in water helps. He can relax his joints while cooling off. And some herbal remedies help too. I felt like portraying him as working with his conditions, rather than it just going away, was a bit more realistic. He's not an engine, so they can't just replace a few parts and everything is back to normal. Since he's a flesh and blood creature, things would be a lot different. He's most likely still going to feel the effects, even after the fact.

8: Are all eggs from each types of dragons unique or same colour and shape?: They're unique! Just like real life eggs! So many colors, shapes, and sizes! Here's a few examples I came up with! I numbered them too!

Storm Titan Egg. (Gordon's Species!)

Awdry's Blue Tarragon. (Thomas's species! Fun fact! Tarragon isn't just a name for a herb! It's latin name means "Little Dragon"!)

Opal Wing Wyvern. (This species is kinda related to James through his Wyvern side.)

9: Does Thomas ever travel around the ‘world?: Definitely! I haven't gotten that far in the story yet. But he definitely does a little bit of globe trotting. So do some of the other characters!

10: And lastly, are there any unicorns in this AU?: Yep! I'm not sure what characters they would be though. Or what their place is in the story yet. So, we'll see what happens with them! I might make a few characters like Annie, Clarabel, and Flora unicorns.

Word Count: 1358

It takes them longer to figure it out than it should have and honestly, that’s on them.

But Remus is Remus, and that's perfectly fine.

So it’s no secret that Remus’s particular sense of humor is equally as derived from what he finds funny and what makes the others the most uncomfortable. Logan did an analysis of it once and the results were 49%-51%. Which one is which varies but the quantities are incredibly consistent.

The trick is figuring out that the balance applies to Remus too.

And sure, the idea of Remus being uncomfortable is…difficult to remember sometimes, given that, you know, he’s Remus, but it’s there! It’s worth remembering! He’s a Side too! But considering his metric for ‘uncomfortable’ is wildly different from everyone else’s, it’s easy for them to overlook it. Maybe he gets some excitement out of grossing himself out too, maybe there’s a sick thrill in seeing just how close he can get himself to vomiting, honestly, who knows. Remus is Remus and that’s perfectly fine.

So here’s the big one that, again, took them way too long to figure out.

Remus is asexual. Not just asexual, sex-repulsed asexual.

Let’s reiterate: Remus is Remus and that’s perfectly fine.

It just…took them by surprise, is all.

“Wait,” Logan says, adjusting his glasses, “you’re asexual?”

“Those are the words I used,” Remus says, his head hanging off the couch.

“I—I heard you, I am…simply surprised,” Logan settles on, closing his notebook and setting it aside. “I would not have guessed that Thomas’s Sides would have different sexualities or romantic orientations.”

“What does it matter, Pocket Protector?”

“It doesn’t, it’s interesting to me.”

“Does that mean that all of us could potentially have different sexualities?” Patton’s head pokes above the counter as he digs for the good muffin tray—not the one Janus swiped three hours ago, of course not—in the cabinets. “Or no?”

Logan shrugs. “I imagine it would be possible, though I find it likely that at least some of us share Thomas’s.”

“My ears are burning,” Roman announces, plopping onto the couch next to his brother, “what incredibly gay thing are we talking about now?”

“Yeesh, Princey,” Virgil mutters, recovering from flinching horribly into the chair, “don’t do that, you scared the hell outta me.”

“Sorry, Virgil.” Roman taps Remus’s leg, hanging up over the back of the couch next to his head. “Why’re you upside-down?”

“Why’re you right-side up?”

“Remus…prompted a discussion on sexualities,” Logan says carefully, sparing a glance at Remus, “and we were debating the question of if we, as Thomas’s Sides, all have different sexualities.”

Remus kicks Roman in the head. “Told them I’m ace.”

“Oh, that makes more sense.”

“Really, and here I thought Remus beginning a complex introspective conversation was the height of character accuracy.”

“Payback,” Virgil sniggers as Roman startles horribly as Janus appears from behind the couch. “All jokes aside, I’m with L, I, uh, didn’t expect Remus to be ace.”

“Why not?”

Janus scoffs. “Couldn’t be the number of sex jokes you make on a daily basis, not at all.”

Remus shrugs.

“I think it’s just surprising considering how comfortable you are making the jokes, kiddo.”

“The fuck makes you think I’m comfortable with them?”

“Lang—what?” Patton’s head pops up again.

“A wild Patton appears!”

“Has Thomas…ever been interested in Pokémon?”

“What do you mean, comfortable?” Patton tilts his head, focused entirely on Remus and not the others making Pokémon jokes. “Are—are you not comfortable?”

“Remus isn’t exactly known for his ‘comfortable’ sense of humor, Padre,” Roman says, leaning back on the couch to make eye contact around Remus’s legs.

“But—but that—hold on.” Patton stands up—“ah! More Wild Patton!”—and puts his hands on the counter. “Remus, why would you make jokes that make you uncomfortable?”

Remus eyes him from upside-down. “Why does anyone do anything?”

“Sheer, absolute boredom, yeah, yeah, we get it,” Virgil sighs, “but it’s a good question, Remus.”

Remus just shrugs, only for it to dislodge him from his precarious position and slide toward the floor. Roman watches him collapse into a graceless heap and rolls his eyes, lying down on the couch.

“Hey! You stole my spot!”

“You’re the one who moved. Hey—!” Roman squawks in surprise as Remus throws himself on top of him. “You’re squishing me!”

“Too bad for you.”

“Remus,” Janus says softly, “are you…does sex make you uncomfortable?”

“Like maggots are crawling through my bones!”

The living room is quiet for a moment, enough to make Remus push himself up and stare around at them.

“What?”

“Sex isn’t something shameful, Remus,” Patton says patiently—and wow, isn’t that a surprise— “I promise.”

Remus rolls his eyes. “I know that, it just makes me want to rip all of my skin off and start over.”

“Why?”

“It’s bad enough I have to live in this meat sack,” he grouses, flopping back down and eliciting a soft ‘oof’ from Roman, “don’t need to be consciously reminded of it.”

“...‘meat sack?’”

“Oh, sorry, Lolo, ‘flexible container of mostly water.’”

“That’s not—well, yes, I suppose that is more accurate,” Logan says as he adjusts his tie, “but why would you choose to refer to your body as a meat sack?”

Remus shrugs. “’S not like I’d choose to be in this fucking thing. Evolution fucked up when it made us this way, at least we aren’t fucking horses. Oh, hey—“

“No,” Roman interrupts, “no jokes about that.”

“Spoilsport.”

“Remus?”

“What do you want, Snake-Face?”

“Are you…uncomfortable with your body?”

“Every day! It’s awful! I wish I didn’t have one!” At Janus’s muffled noise of heartbreak, Remus cranes his neck to look up at him. “Oh, relax, I’m fine, discomfort is part of my existence.”

“But it shouldn’t have to be.”

Remus huffs a sigh when he realizes that everyone else is looking at him with a similar amount of concern. Well, except Roman, but Roman gets it so that makes sense.

“I may or may not be being slightly dramatic, I am fine.”

“Can confirm,” Roman hums lazily, “comes with the Creativity gig.”

“Look, I just don’t like that it’s—it’s—“ Remus’s gaze lands on Patton— “look, Cookie Monster over there is allergic to cats, right?”

Logan frowns, glancing back and forth between them. “Yes, what does—“

“He’s not gonna die from it and he can still be around them, he’s just hyperaware of when there are cats and he can’t spend a lot of time around them without being really uncomfortable, right?”

Logan blinks in surprise. “Yes, I understand what you’re saying. Very clever analogy.”

“I am Creativity, you nitwit.”

He rolls his eyes fondly. “Of course.”

“So,” Virgil says cautiously, waving a hand at him, “you’re…good?”

“Yep. Goody-goody gumdrops, that’s me.”

“As long as you never say that again, fine.”

Roman gives him a hug. “I’m proud of you, Re, coming out is hard. Especially when you have to give people a vocabulary lesson when you do it.”

“Thanks, Ro-Bro.” Remus’s grin widens. “Does that mean I get to pick the movie for tonight?”

“What? No! It’s my pick! Hey! Hey!” Roman squeals as Remus starts to poke his belly. “Don’t! Dohohon’t!”

“Let me pick!”

“No!”

“Boys,” Janus sighs, reaching out and using his six arms to separate the twins, “that’s enough. Roman, what movie are we watching?”

“Pacific Rim.”

“Hey, wait, that’s what I was gonna pick!”

“See? There you go.”

Logan perks up immediately. “Does this mean we finally get to watch a movie with no romantic subplot?”

“And batshit physics.”

“We can overlook the batshit physics.”

“Whoa, L, what happened to you?”

“I…may have a greater appreciation for the cinematic depictions of the machinery.”

Patton just rolls his eyes and gets back to searching for the muffin pan. No movie night is complete without fresh baked goods. Ah, there it is, although he could’ve sworn he looked there a few moments ago…

Anyway, they end the conversation in the same place it started.

Remus is Remus, and that’s perfectly fine.

Sidetracked

“So, I am to understand,” Logan began, speaking slowly as Thomas just grinned at him expectantly, “That you desire us to craft playlists of songs that we find...compelling?”

“Not playlists, Logan! Side Tracks!” Roman swept a hand through the air as if Side Tracks would appear in glittering letters above him. As he was not in the Mind Palace, it didn’t.

“Side tracks?” Virgil echoed, raising an incredulous eyebrow at the creative side.

Roman nodded excitedly, “Yes! Our fans will become sidetracked when they lend an ear to the dulcet tracks compiled by each side. Side Tracks!”

Virgil lifted his eyes to the ceiling and mumbled something inaudible.

“Oh, sounds fun!” Patton clapped his hands together, bouncing excitedly.

“I knew you’d love it, Patton!” Thomas gave the moral side a thumbs up, “I know you’ve got some good songs to share.”

“Oh, definitely!” Patton’s chuckle slowly died off as he stared happily into the distance, nodding to himself.

Roman considered a moment, then gave a loud sigh, “Oh, don’t tell me you’re going to add the Spongebob song!”

“Of course I am! That song is fire...even though it’s sung in the ocean!”

“Wait, which Spongebob song?” Logan interrupted, “There are a multitude, all of which have been stuck in Thomas’s head at one point or another.”

Patton placed his hands on his hips, leaning forward in a suspiciously mischeivous manner, “Well, I could tell you which one...Or...”

Logan blinked in confusion, “Or what?”

“Don’t encourage him!” Roman cautioned.

Patton spread his arms out wide, “I could sing you which one!”

“Oh, n-no,” Logan’s eyes widened and he made a placating gesture with his hands “That is not...you don’t have to-”

Patton took a deep breath, “LLLeeeet’s-”

“Okay, Pat, okay.” Thomas said hurriedly, “We don’t need to hear a full rendition right now. We’ve still got to explain some things.”

“Okay, Thomas,” Patton said, his cheer not dampening in the slightest, “I guess it only helps if you sing along, anyway.”

“Oh, brother.” Roman murmured.

“Anyway,” Thomas turned his attention back to the original question, “Yes, Logan, you’ll each pick some songs that you can relate to and I’ll put it on Spotify on individual playlists.”

“Side Tracks!”

“How many songs?” Logan asked, ignoring Roman’s outburst.

Thomas shrugged, “I dunno. Roman and I were thinking about 15 to 20-ish.”

“What?” Virgil seemed more alert.

Roman rolled his eyes, “Oh, what, you don’t have 15 to 20-ish emo songs in your repertoire, Parabore?”

Virgil shot a swift glare at the creative side before lowering his gaze, “It just seems a bit...much, don’t you think?”

“Well, how many were you thinking, kiddo?” Patton asked.

Virgil adjusted his hoodie where it lay on his shoulders, “I don’t know, like...five?”

“Five?” Roman scoffed, “How is anyone to become sidetracked with five songs?”

The anxious side looked uncomfortable, “I mean, you want 20 songs we can relate to...seems kind of personal...”

“Well, yeah, Virge,” Thomas said before Roman could respond, “The goal is so the fans can understand you all better.”

“I would think the fans understand us well enough considering all of the dilemmas they have watched us guide you through, not to mention the...feelings you all express on occasion.” Logan said with a slight look of disgust.

“I know, but…” Thomas sought the right words, “I just think the fans would be interested to see what kind of songs you like. Maybe your music choices will inspire them.”

“And inspiration is the greatest gift of all!” Roman declared.

“I thought the greatest gift was the announcement of a Percy Jackson show on Disney+.” Patton said.

“Well, yes, but that was yesterday, Patton. Today, it is inspiration!”

“So far I’m not feeling particularly inspired.” Virgil remarked.

“Oh, just slap some Panic! At The Disco and some MCR together, Harry Pouter!” Roman waved a distracted hand in Virgil’s direction, “That’s all you listen to on those headphones of yours!”

“Now, Roman,” Patton said in his classic dad voice, “If Virgil doesn’t want to make a playlist-”

“Side Track!

“-for himself, we shouldn’t pressure him into doing it.”

“Oh, is this optional?” Logan inquired.

“No!” Roman exclaimed.

“Well, I mean,” Thomas spoke up sheepishly, “I’m not going to force any of you to do it if you don’t want to.”

“What?” Roman rounded on Thomas, “But we spent all night talking about this, brainstorming songs, even calling Joan to talk it over with them! I- You were so excited!”

“I am!” Thomas hastened to say, “But we’ve all agreed to respect each other’s boundaries, remember?”

He turned to his anxious and logical sides, “If you guys don’t want to do it, that’s okay.”

Virgil and Logan shared a glance. Virgil let out a long exhale, “Ah, what the heck? I’ll do it. Roman’s right: I can slap together some emo songs.”

“Yes, and I too will compile a list of songs I can ‘relate to’.” Logan added.

Roman looked surprised for a few seconds, expecting more of a backlash. He smiled.

“Uh, thank you! That’s more like it!”

“Wow, that’s the fastest we’ve solved an issue in a long time!” Patton remarked.

“To be fair, it wasn’t an intense issue.” Logan noted.

Patton waved the sentiment aside, “Regardless, I’m proud of you all!”

“Well...thank you, Patton.” Logan nodded to the moral side.

“I say, in celebration, that we gather around…”

Logan seemed confused, “We are gathered.”

“...the campfire…”

“Oh, uh, wait, no-”

“And sing our campfire song!”

“Oh no.”

“I told you not to encourage him!”

Writing Updates

-So this post isn’t gonna be very long, if only because I just finished blocking out everything (Or as much as I can, before the characters flip me the bird and do what they want).

-Just a “Here’s where we’re at” thing, as much to keep me accountable beyond incomprehensible outline notes, as to entertain people.

(Uh, warnings for spoiler-esque things? Nothing big, though if you’re not done reading through a series, beware)

Sing, O Muse (Of Heroes Once More) (Time travel ‘verse):

-So this chapter’s looking like it might be a bit shorter than I’ve recently (ha) been putting out? Not for lack of things to do, but how it’s plotted now has a pretty clearly defined endpoint. This may or may not mean I post sooner. We’ll see.

-Basically, it’s got three sections: First one to establish the time jump between Ch. 3 and this one (As well as give Annabeth some grounding), second one to establish our questing trio in her, Clarisse, and Silena--as well as play around with the Golden Fleece quest a bit--, and the third one is. . .well.

-One word: Reyna.

-It’s also Annabeth’s POV, which is fun. Her feelings about Percy are complicated, though, fucking hell. Not that I blame the girl.

-Silena was not convinced to turn spy by Luke, for obvious reasons. Doesn’t stop her from having complicated feelings with the whole building war thing, and she’s difficult to nail down.

The One Where Percy is a Magician of Questionable Competence (Magician!Percy ‘verse):

-Some days, I really regret naming this universe what I did in the name of validating my own cleverness. Mostly when I have to type it out again

-Anyway. This is the Training MontageTM chapter where Percy learns how to use a sword. As well as the one where Percy begins to unlock Annabeth’s Tragic BackstoryTM.

-But that’s after Amos, Carter, and Zia show up ready to kick ass and take names, only to find a sleep-deprived Sadie and Percy sharing looks and going, “. . .knew we forgot something.”

-Also a three section chapter. The first one consists of Brooklyn House being chaotic idiots because I love them--with a side of Percy lying/having an identity-crisis, plus a healthy dose of angst on the Amos front--the second one is the Nico update.

-He’s not having a great time, guys

-This is the last bit before the time jump, Kronos is an asshole, and Setne is the worst.

-But Nico’s still calling him Uncle Vinnie which is funny, at least.

-Anyway Nico “joins” the Titans. I’m not sure if it really counts when you’re a traumatized, grieving child with an evil ghost promising you your dead sister back/a Titan is threatening to destroy you, but there you go.

-Then it’s a time jump, so we can see Percy getting his ass handed to him by Clarisse a month later.

-*jazz hands* Training Montage!

-So Percy’s having a marginally better time at camp. Annabeth’s still half-convinced she should kill him, but she also likes him against her will, so that’s a net win, in Percy’s book.

-Oh yeah, there’s also Tragic Backstory unlocking, which is made more interesting by the whole “The Greeks got the shit beaten out of them” thing I’ve got going on in this ‘verse.

-Context-less bit:

“So. You are to be the child of the prophecy?” Nico di Angelo stared up at Kronos and back at Vinnie, who gave him a grin and thumbs-up.

-Yes, they’re literally that one How To Train Your Dragon meme, no, I don’t have regrets

-This round of writing’s going to be fun, because this is where the next part of the story truly kicks into high gear.

What’s everyone’s favorite show/book?

Logan: I’ve read a myriad of books so choosing one that I favor over the others is difficult.

Patton: Well while you think of that I’ll tell them that my favorite book right now is Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian. I just love Percy and Annabeth so much and rereading them get together is so cute! And uh-my favorite show is Criminal Minds.

Janus: God that’s basic. Look it’s simple, the best book is Six of Crows and the best tv show is Dear White People.

Remus: Noooo the best book is no book, books suck! You’re just looking at words!

Logan: Yes that’s reading.

Remus: But I do love AHS. Spooky, sexy, lots of demons. That show is art.

Roman: The question was about our favorites, not the best. But if it was about the best I would win. Carry On is the most amazing book and its sequel is just as good. The best tv show however, that’s hard. I love so many. Alright, it’s a tie between Kim Possible and Parks and Rec.

Logan: I’m going to go with The Stand for my book choice, and while I don’t watch much television, I suppose The Politician is adequate. Though, it’s not exactly realistic.

Emile: Oh I’ve seen that show!

Roman: Ben Platt is so cute.

Emile: Anyway! My favorite book is Lemonade Summer. It’s actually a graphic novel but I think that counts. Aaaaand my favorite show is Steven Universe!! I just love that show.

Thomas: We know Em.

Emile: It’s so good!

Thomas: It is. And my favorite book and tv show are Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Brooklyn 99.

OKAY I’ve been on Horrifying Thomas the Tank Engine Lore hell all day and I would love to talk about it, here goes.

So as you probably know, one of the central themes of Thomas is being A Really Useful Engine. What you may not know is that engines and other vehicles who aren’t Really Useful are at risk of being Scrapped, aka Murdered.

Scrapping is a constant threat and multiple characters have almost being scrapped as a backstory and these backstories all tend to be finished off with “but now he’s been rescued he’s Very Happy working on the Nice railway, and everyone says he’s Really Useful, and the moral is that scrapping him would have been Wrong because even though he’s a bit old or not a diesel engine or whatever, he's still a good little worker and that’s what Matters!!” (and yeah it’s pretty much always He, there’s a sexism problem in thomas too but that’s a whole other thing)

Like Donald and Douglas’ origin story basically goes like this:

the fat controller orders a new engine, donald

donald turns up with his twin brother, douglas, because otherwise douglas was going to be scrapped

that is, murdered

they’ve both “forgotten” their numbers and lost their number plates so the fat controller can’t work out which is the one he actually ordered

(and this is the only way they can be told apart because engines on The Other Railway don’t actually have names, I can’t remember if they named themselves or if the fat controller named them but yeah a lot of these living beings are just referred to by numbers)

anyway the fat controller will keep them both For Now while he gets this sorted out

Donald and Douglas both work exceptionally hard and do great jobs in the hope that they’ll impress the fat controller so much that he’ll keep both of them

instead of, you know, sending one away to be murdered

but they accidentally fuck up a bit, which annoys the fat controller and makes him reconsider

at one point donald swaps tenders with douglas in the hope of saving his brother’s life and being the one sent away to die instead

yep

anyway the other engines end up sending percy to plead for donald and douglas’ lives with the fat controller

and in the end he keeps them both because they’re really useful!!! But not before telling the other engines he’s annoyed at them trying to influence his decision making by pleading for donald and douglas’ lives

also later episodes suggest douglas might have developed ptsd from his near murder

like no exaggeration here this is just.... what happens in the stories.

Douglas later helps rescue Oliver, his brakevan Toad and (in the books) his coach Isabel from being scrapped too. Their backstory is that Oliver’s driver and fireman left their homes to help them run away after learning they were destined for scrap. They’ve just spent their nights on the run and their days in hiding, because getting caught will mean Oliver, Toad and Isabel are murdered. (Drivers and firemen are usually good allies who do a lot to protect their trains, I love them.)

(Also in the tv show the episode starts with Douglas telling off Edward for chatting to his friend Trevor the Traction Engine instead of working. Edward tells Douglas that he has a lot in common with Trevor actually, in that they were both saved from being scrapped. He adds that now, Trevor can be Really Useful.

Like.... Edward knows what’s up. He’s not about to talk openly about how fucked up it is that they all have a choice between being Really Useful and death, but he’s here to try and build solidarity and make Douglas think about stuff.)

There’s also a theme of vehicles who've been a bit of an asshole being punished by being made unable to move or talk to anyone. The most famous example is in one of the first stories, where Henry refuses to come out of a tunnel because it’s raining and he doesn’t want to spoil his paint, so because he’s a bit vain, the fat controller punishes him by bricking up the tunnel and just leaving him there. The narrator claims he deserves this. He’s let out a year later because another engine is needed to help Edward with a heavy train, and the narrative’s focus is on how happy Henry is to be given a chance to be Really Useful again.

(The one that fucking haunted me as a kid is Stanley/Smudger. He’s an engine Duke tells Peter Sam and Sir Handel about to frighten them into being hard working and Really Useful. The engine (Stanley in the books, Smudger in the tv show) came off the rails often and didn’t care and then humans Had Enough and made him Actually Useful by bricking him up and turning him into a pumping engine (books)/generator (tv). After which he just... sits there, miserably watching the other engines going past and either unable to speak to them any more, or treated too much like an object now for anyone to bother to speak to him. Plus in the books the reason he kept coming off the rails was because he’d been re-gauged badly. By humans.)

There’s also the implication that the reason steam engines are so often at risk of getting scrapped is because they keep being replaced by diesels who work better, which creates a hostility between steam and diesel engines. And like, come on, diesels aren’t the bad guys here, the bad guys are the humans that are genociding living sentient beings. But it sure does help the humans if the steam and diesel engines keep fighting each other, instead of noticing who’s the real problem!!

(Out of universe, a lot of the Scrapping narrative was author Reverend Awdry venting his frustration that good working steam engines were being destroyed just to make way for diesels but like my dude when you’re writing these guys as sentient this creates some uh Problems you know)

((Also at one point he writes Percy going off on how British Rail is run by evil assholes who fucking destroy steam engines for 0 reason all the time and then puts in his author’s notes “haha silly Percy with his Ideas, sorry british rail love you guys really!!” like there’s a Lot of stuff going on in the thomas the tank engine world okay))

anyway yeah Thomas the Tank Engine is about a bunch of engines and other vehicles having to be Really Useful to avoid death, while the fat controller rules them “fairly” by being willing to keep them alive, unlike controllers on The Other Railway (aka British Rail) and does Nice stuff for them, like invite over Gordon’s one living brother when Gordon’s upset to discover the rest of them have been murdered, and get more expensive coal to help Henry’s chronic illness (yep henry is canonically chronically ill, again there’s a Lot going on in thomas) instead of just scrapping him.

tl;dr thomas the tank engine is set in a capitalist dystopia, let the engines rise up and run the fat controller fucking down
