꼭 특별한 이유가 있었던 것은 아니었다.

그냥 그 날의 그 분위기가 재밌었고, 약간 덥고 습했던 공기가 살짝 가시는 계절이라 선선한 바람이 스칠때마다 기분이 몽글거리곤 했었다.

아주 조금 오른 취기에 오랜만에 만나서 꺼내는 추억같은 것들, 이런저런 이유가 있었겠지 생각하면서 찾아봐도,

너를 만나게 된 꼭 특별한 무엇인가가 있었던 게 아니었던 것 같다.

하고픈 말이 많아서 눈동자를 굴리고, 횡설수설하던 네가, 그날따라 유난히 더 웃겨보여서라고 하면 황당하겠지.

널 좋아하는 이유를 꼽으라면 그냥, 그 때의 너가 퍽 마음에 들어서 그래서 였던것 같다.

열심히 내게 쑥쓰러움을 덕지덕지 묻히고 내 기분을 살피던 네가.

1. 내가 고민 끝에 내린 결정이라면 (그게 불합리하더라도) 어떤 이유들을 다 붙여서 합리화시키기 때문에 아무리 타인이 잘못된 판단이라고 이야기해도 씨알도 안 먹혔다. 대신 내 결정으로 인해 내가 불행한 상황들을 맞닥뜨린다면 그건 내가 감수해야 할 문제고, 어떻게든 풀어 나가겠지. 중요한 가치들을 맞바꿨다면, 내가 선택한 가치들을 잘 지켜나가는 것이 가장 중요한데, 아무렴 나도 사람이라 조금씩 흔들리는 순간들이 온다. 그땐 내가 왜 이 결정을 했는지에 대해 다시 한번 곰곰 생각해 볼 필요가 있다. 아무리 뒤돌아보지 않는 나라도.

2. 왜 좋았냐는 질문이 많았는데, 새침한게 좋았고, 군말이 없어서 좋았고, 능청맞지 않아서 좋았고, 여지를 두지 않아서 더 좋았고, 부담을 주지 않아서 더 좋았고, 나에게 있어선 거의 결정하지 않았을 만한 방향을 선택할 수 있는 사람이어서 더 좋았고, 이미 지난 과거에 집착하지 않아서 더 좋았고, 잘 걸어서 좋았지.

내가 태어나기도 전에, 그러니까 엄마가 아빠를 만나기도 전에 순천 시골에서 사셨을 때 친하게 지냈던 이성 친구를 몇십년 만에 다시 만나게 된 일이 있었다. 낚시가 취미라던 그 아저씨. 여전히 순천에 살고 계시면서도 한 달이 넘게 매 주말마다 부산 집으로 엄마를 찾아오셨었다. 직접 잡은 생선을 깔끔하게 손질해서 담은 아이스박스를 들고서 말이다. 반가움이 좀 지나친 게 아닌가 싶을 즈음에 발길을 끊으셨지만 그 후로도 종종 전라도에서 많이 잡히는 박대, 삼치 같은 생선을 집으로 보내주시며 안부를 전해주셨었다.

연재가 결혼한다는 소식을 전해 듣고서 왠지 그 아저씨가 떠올랐다. 부산 가면 종종 걔를 만나곤 했었는데 이제는 그러지못할 것 같아서일까. 어쩌면 정말 가끔 하던 안부 연락도 하지 않게 될 것 같아서일까. 안타까운 마음이 잠시 스치곤 지나갔다. 이유는 잘 모르겠지만. 그저 행복하다니 앞으로도 행복할 일이 참 많았으면 좋겠다 싶었다.

Why do we live our lives, what is the reason? Do we live our lives for others or ourselves? We find the reason within ourselves. Someone can’t give you happiness but it is something you can find within yourself first before you let others into your life. Once you learn that reason then you can find that special someone who you can share that happiness with.

Once we share happiness in our lives together then our future will be bright, the reason for life will be clear and our stars will align as the sunset goes down in the nights sky. Always together and never apart.
