Some of the whump are inflicted on purpose, meaning he could’ve prevented it with his skills but is often undercover so has to withstand the pain. I’ve chosen to include it with cursive writing since you sometimes can see him “faking it” and that kinda ruins the whump for me.

Kate has had this dream. The one where she’s laying in bed and she can feel the sun creeping its way into the sky by the warmth that seeps through her light blanket somewhere around her knees before it moves higher, over her hips and navel and to the hollow of her throat. And then - a bed-warm hand that starts somewhere around her wrist, over the quickening pulse of nerves, that moves to the crook of her elbow and curls there. She feels fingernails scratching at the bone, and the gentle but insistent question: are you awake? In her dream, she smiles into the pillow under her cheek and grumbles out a harmless no. In her dream, a laugh reaches her ears - soft and like a song she’s heard before but never really stopped to appreciate until it was a sound just for her. In her dream, she rolls and feels the warm press of a body against hers, feels that laugh in her bones now instead of her ears.

In her dream, Lucy whispers good morning and Kate thinks, each day, yes. Yes, this is a good morning.

She’s had this dream every night since Lucy left. When she wakes up alone, curled into one side of the bed around a space where Lucy would be, everything is bittersweet. She’s happy that Lucy is stepping into who she wants to be; happy that Lucy is conquering her fears and thinking about her future. She’s sad that it means Lucy is somewhere else; sad that Lucy is so far away, that she’s not just on the other side of that pillow rise, eyes already open and smiling back at her.

A finger brushes over her brow. “Good morning,” dream-Lucy says.

Kate says what she always does. “It will be when you’re here.”

There’s a soft chuckle, more of an exhale than a noise. “And if I’m already here? What kind of upgrade is that?”

Kate’s eyes open and she blinks as Lucy - real and living and breathing and fingers slowly threading into her pajama top Lucy - comes into focus. Her smile is crooked, amused, and her eyes sparkle as she waits for an answer Kate can’t quite pull out of her mouth.

“I think it’s be a great morning, at least,” Lucy finally finishes. “Blink twice if you agree.”

Kate blinks three times and Lucy laughs, so loud and so bright and so perfect that Kate feels her lungs expand with the sound.

“You’re here.”

Lucy winds her fingers a little deeper into the fabric of Kate’s shirt, sliding closer instead of pulling. “I’m here. And I forgot how great here is. Soft blankets, firm pillows, a comfortable mattress.” Another inch closer. “The love of my life right next to me.”

It still does something to her, every time Lucy says the word love. She still can’t believe it. She, Kate Whistler, gets to be loved by Lucy Tara - out loud, for everyone to see. No more secrets, no more sneaking around. She carries it around like a badge she can’t help but show off. Look at me. Look what I’ve become with all this love.

“You’re really here?” She can’t help but ask again. She’s had this dream. And each time she’s woken up alone in a bed that never felt too big before now, in an apartment she never saw herself sharing with anyone.

Lucy must know. Lucy always knows. For all the ways Kate has tightened up her corners and pressed down on the parts of herself she didn’t want anyone to see, Lucy has always been able to get her to unfold and expand, to let herself grow instead of shrink down.

So Lucy doesn’t tease her. She doesn’t laugh or roll her eyes at what she’s sure is a stretch of fear in her voice. Lucy runs her finger across her brow instead, lets it follow a path down the slope of her nose and off the end of it, the pad of her thumb brushing against Kate’s bottom lip.

“I’m here,” she says, voice steady and sure. “And here is where I’m going to stay.”

Kate has had this dream before but all of it pales in comparison to the way Lucy closes the final inches between them and kisses her good morning like the last 4 months have just been a series of moments, of dreams, leading up to this one right here. This one that is real.

The first morning after he came back, the two of you slept in. Or Spencer did actually wake up at his usual early time, but you’d just crawled further into him, successfully lulling him back to sleep.

When 11 came around, you were both wide awake, lying there, cuddling as carefully as you could. Spencer was very insistent on having you pressed up against him, even with you protesting about accidentally hurting him, he wouldn’t let you out of his grasp.

That morning he told you everything that had happened. From the details about the case, to the shooting, to Garcia saving his life. You remembered her. That sweet, colourful lady had saved Spencer’s life? She was the reason he was in your arms at this very moment. You cried a lot, of course. Both of you did, trying to process the shock of it all. But he did his best to reassure you that it was okay. Even if you didn’t fully believe him, he still tried.

Later, when you were chatting about how the healing process was gonna go, he casually just mentioned the fact that he had been shot before and your eyebrows shot up.

“You have what?!” you shouted in disbelief, sitting straight up in the bed.

“Yeah,” he shrugged.

“When? Where?”

“About 4 years and 276 days ago. The case that it happened during was here in Virginia.”

“No, not where in the country, where on your body!”

“Oh, my left knee.”

Reaching down, you yanked his pant leg up revealing, sure enough, a pale scar. Tracing it with your pointer finger, you asked, still completely stunned, “how did I not know about this?”

“I don’t know, but then again I don’t know about all of your scars either.”

“Well, I think there is a big difference between my unimpressive collection of scars, all acquired during my childhood, compared to a fucking bullet wound. Why would I tell you the dramatic tale of me falling off a swing at the ripe old age of 6?”

“You fell off a swing?” he asked, generally concerned.

Looking down, ignoring his question, “I mean, I know that you work for the FBI, but for some reason, this didn’t occur to me as a possibility of what could happen to you out there.”

Interlocking his fingers with yours, “if it helps, it’s not that often that I go out into the field.”

“Well, it’s clearly often enough!”

“Y/n, look at me,” his thumb danced over yours.

Meeting his eyes, he continued slowly, making sure you absorbed every single word, “I am right here. I’m alive. And yes, I might be a little banged up right now, but that will heal, I’ll get better in no time. I know that the reality of my job is scary but trust me when I say that I’ll do everything in my power to get back in one piece to you. I love you, Y/n. I would do anything for you.”

Sniffling, you whispered, “I love you too.”

The sun had now set, and Spencer had just woken up from his third nap. Keeping his eyes closed, he took long deep breaths.

“How are you?” you asked, timidly.

“Fine,” he replied, a little too fast to be convincing.

“Do you need any painkillers? I don’t think I’ve seen you take any today,” you added, “are they still in your bag?” already on your way out to search for them.

“No thanks, I-, um, no.”

“Spencer, I can see how much pain you’re in right now, you clearly need to take something.”

“No, I don’t need any, I’m fine, can you just drop it?”

“Oh, I-, I’m sorry. I just can go if you want me to?”

“No, Y/n, that’s not what I meant. I just really don’t wanna take any narcotics.”

“Spencer, you’re healing from a gunshot wound, do you really think it’s smart not to take anything for the pain?”

Snapping his eyes open, he stared you down, “Y/n, I’m not gonna take anything. Now stop.”

Chewing on your bottom lip in order to fight the tears that you could feel coming on, you stammered, “I’m sorry if I-, I’m sorry.”

Sighing deeply, he reached a hand out for you to come near, “don’t be sorry, I-… Y/n, 7 years ago I was kidnapped by this man, Tobias Hankel. He had multiple personalities and he drugged and tortured me. I, um… Tobias, he saved my life… gave me CPR…” keeping his head down, struggling with the words, “a-after that, I had a problem, with Dilaudid, still do, that never really went away… but I’ve been clean for many years now.”

Keeping quiet, you didn’t know how to respond. “Spencer, I’m so sorry. I’m sorry I blabbered on about painkillers, god I’m an idiot. I’m so sorry that happened to you. I wish I could take that away, make it disappear.” Scrambling, trying to find something, anything that could make this just a little bit better, “what can I do? What do need?”

Closing his eyes again, he breathed out, “I don’t know.”

Standing up, you attempted, “okay, what’s your favourite food?”

Chuckling lightly, he replied, “jello, why?”

“I’m gonna go get you some.”

“You are?” he opened his eyes again.

“Yes.”

Knowing you too well, he hesitated, “you really don’t have to-,”

“Spencer, please just let me, I feel absolutely terrible. Can I just do this one thing for you?” you pleated.

Waiting a moment, he agreed slowly, “alright. If you want to, but you really don’t have to.”

Already halfway out the door, “I know, I want to.”

You never really left your apartment. Well, you went to go talk to Anna, but you didn’t really do much else outside your home. It’s not that you couldn’t, it’s just that there were much more important things for you to use your energy on. There were so many things out there that added up and made the whole experience just be too overwhelming, and the aftermath ruined your ability to get anything else done, so most of the time, you stayed inside. That worked. Stevie helped you buy groceries, and honestly, you’d perfected the art of whipping up something edible out of next to nothing.

So going down to the store, at night, was… a lot.

But it actually went surprisingly alright. Or well, alright considering. You were so hyper-focused on the task at hand that it wasn’t that bad. Needless to say, you did stand in the hallway for a good 14 minutes before entering the apartment once more, taking the time to just breathe and let your body react to the chaos of the world. You didn’t want Spencer to see, not tonight, he already had enough on his plate.

Once you felt ready, you flapped and shook your hands a bit to rid yourself of the rest and walked through the door. Heading straight into the kitchen, you procured a spoon and ventured forth into the bedroom.

“I didn’t know what flavour your favourite was,” holing up the crackling plastic bag, “so I just got a bit of everything.”

With a look of utter awe, he muttered, “you got me jello? God, you’re an angel.”

Setting the full bag down at the end of the bed, you pulled a few of the small plastic cups out, “so what do you want? I’ve got strawberry, lemon, green apple, cherry, um, I think there’s a single raspberry one somewhere in here…”

“They all sound great,” he smiled.

“Cherry it is then,” handing him the little container and the spoon you’d procured, “here you are, good sir.”

Grabbing a hold of your hand as he took the items from you, he beamed, “I love you. Thank you for taking care of me. “

I’ve been reading lots of stuff about autistic Hotch. How do you think Hotch stims? Are there any gifs/examples from episodes?

OKAY so this is going to be a long list because I just went back through the episodes I've seen up to specifically looking for examples! But thank you for asking. I've been meaning to collect examples somewhere.

(I'll preface this with saying that everyone stims and just because I mention something here doesn't mean anyone is automatically autistic because they do that too.)

The main thing I can think of is what I very descriptively call "the hand thing" he does.

This is probably the clearest example of it in a gif I could find. What I mean is the way he rubs his thumb over the ends of his fingers. I see it as a fairly subtle way to stim and it tends to come up mostly when he's either thinking or stressed. That's the main thing I've picked up on because he does it quite a lot; I haven't gone over the earlier episodes specifically yet - only skimmed certain parts based on the incidences of it I found going through screencaps from @masterwords - it seems most prevalent in the earlier seasons.

A few more examples - they don't all have the actual motion in them but you can see his fingers curled up like that. He also brings his hand up near his face somewhat often, again usually when he's thinking.

He also does it a ton while walking and standing in general. Some more screenshots (thanks again @masterwords)

Two occasions stick out to me, both when he was distressed or highly worried at least. First is in Omnivore (4x18). It isn't strictly the thumb-over-the-fingers but it is similar, with his hand balled up and almost hiding his face at first.

And the second I really like because we get the hand stim very clearly but also rocking! It's in 2x08, when Derek refuses to step away from the lady with a bomb under her car. Please ignore the choppy editing and audio lol I just needed to show this:

Here we also see the same thing he does in the above gif of 4x18 - the teeth grinding. I think that's only when he's under a fair bit of distress though.

I've been keeping track of it from now on partly because one day I'm going to compile everything into one absurdly long meta. So I've undoubtedly missed many times and my timings might be a little off but here's some if you want to see examples:

As you can see, it's the most noticeable for me in the early seasons. 9x06 was around when I started keeping track as I watch, not retrospectively, for context.

Not all of these are the hand thing! Some are things like when he picks up a pen he tends to keep it in hand even when he's not actually writing anything, just slightly fiddling with it constantly. And again that's nowhere near JUST an autistic thing but I notice it in addition to the main hand thing.

Another thing is, mostly when he's anxious and holding something like a phone, he'll tap his fingers lightly against it. I have a clip of him somewhere on my blog doing it in 7x07.

There's also what he does with his hands when he isn't stimming that's interesting to me.

Hotch spends a lot of time with his arms either crossed or his hands in his pockets. Often the hand thing and the crossed arms happen at the same, where he'll have his right arm across his chest and with his left running his thumb over his fingers.

I find it really interesting because I read that as trying not to stim. Because if his hands are in his pocket, he can't. If he's got his arms folded, he can't. I'd imagine it fits well with him and his backstory. He's quite reserved in general so it makes sense he wouldn't want to stim very openly even if it's a subtle thing, and then you add in the implications from 1x08 and it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine he was discouraged, whether consciously or not, not to.

Then again, it could also simply be a comfort thing to do something with his hands rather than not stimming. Could be counted as stimming itself - something like pressure.

But in order of most to least frequent, the canon stimming I see from him is

I wasn't going to post this, but I can't not. I just can't stop thinking about it.

So my dad has seen a total of 4 episodes of 911. 2x01, 2x15, and 4x13 and 4x14. He wasn't paying attention at first. He got interested when Eddie volunteered to take the grenade out of Charlie's leg. He wasn't too invested yet though, and would mostly watch his own thing. When I decided to watch 2x15, however, he watched the ENTIRE episode. I was shocked. I haven't been rewatching in order, and it doesn't bother him because he watches strictly for the calls they go on...

Until now.

I was in the mood for it, so I started 4x13. I had told him about that Charlie's case, and he was intrigued, and when I started the episode, he asked if that one was the one. Got em! Hook, line, and sinker. He's actually watching.

We watched, me biting my tongue and him asking questions about what alls going on with everyone (especially Maddie and Bobby.) And then... the shooting!

He's invested now. His favorite is hurt. But we couldn't watch 4x14 that night. So we watched it last night.

He was surprised Buck broke down (at this moment, he only sees Buck as the adrenaline junkie. If he only knew.) He asked about it and I said he'd have to know Buck and Eddie's relationship. And now he knows about Buddie.

The episode goes on, he quickly develops a hate for Taylor (🎉), and then comes the will™.

Dad: so does that mean Buck won't go Full Buck anymore?

Me: ......... no?

I told him about how the entirety of season 5 was self harm for Buck (cough cough Taylor,) and about the bicycle incident in season 6. I mean, Buck has kind of toned it down a bit, but not much.

But the fact remains that dad was just as hopeful as I was about Buck actually understanding Eddie.

And I've left the best gem for last:

"So that some day... If I didn't make it... Christopher would be taken care of. By you."

Dad whispers (just before Buck speaks): he made you a dad.
