Finished: The Love Match
Tumblr media
TITLE: The Love Match
AUTHOR: Priyanka Taslim
CATEGORY: YA
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
PULBISHED: January 2023
REPRESENTATION: Bangladesh-American MC and various Asian-American casts, side F/F relationship
VIBES: Pride and Prejudice meets To All the Boys I've Loved Before
TROPES/THINGS IN IT: Pride and Prejudice remix, cute dates (some with chaperones), messy families trying their best, love triangle, i don't like you to friends to relationship, college anxiety, generation gaps, talk of poverty, working at a restaurant woes, fake dating
THOUGHTS: I normally don't agree with book summary comp titles, but PandP meets To All the Boys is spot on for this book. Throw in a dash of Sandhya Menon romcom fun and you have this book. There's fake dating, family drama, messy romances and all the usual things you expect from a YA romcom.
My only main criticism of it is that the last thirty pages of it felt tacked on and very rushed. I sort of felt like it should have ended earlier, or the plot that arose from that should have happened sooner so it could be fleshed out more or something. Other then that, this was a solid debut. It was exactly what I expected it to be going in and did its job. I'll be keeping an eye on this author in the future.
RATING: Three and a half out of Five

A River of Golden Bones by AK Mulford
Source: NetGalley, many thanks to the publisher!TL;DR: While the characters were a bit flat and one-note the world and magic was very interesting. If you aren’t a character driven reader this could be a real winner! Plot: What begins as a love triangle arranged marriage turns into an almost spurned fated mate (by our main character) journey to save her Sleeping Beauty style sister.Characters:…

Hey
Do you like unhinged, angry women?
Do you like mad science?
Do you like the exquisite homoerotic tension of two Victorian ladies just barely brushing hands?
Do you think that Frankenstein would have gone a lot better if only Victor had been less of an absolute weenie?
Do you look at the story of the Loch Ness Monster and think “...but what if a dinosaur got in the lake”
THEN BOY, DO I HAVE THE BOOK FOR YOU!
Tumblr media
Move over, chemists, it’s time for mad paleontologists to shine!
Years ago, Mary’s great uncle Victor Frankenstein mysteriously disappeared in the Arctic; now, in 1853, Mary and her reckless husband Henry are struggling to make a name for themselves as paleontologists in the old-boys'-club that is the world of Victorian science. But when Mary discovers her great-uncle's old notes, detailing his gruesome attempts at creating life, she comes up with a plan — one that will finally make them some money, prove Henry's radical paleontological theories right, and get Mary some of the respect she goddamn deserves...
Our Hideous Progeny is out NOW! Available wherever good books are sold, and also at your library if you yell (politely) at your local librarians to acquire it! 🖤💚🧡
Thanks all, byeee!

I feel like one thing we can take away from this kickstarter is that Cassandra Clare will never be done with the Shadowhunters universe. like literally all these new short stories come from the fact she took a six month "break" from writing shadowhunters lmao

I was pleasantly surprised by The Jasmine Throne! I bought it because I liked the cover, and even though I'm not a big fantasy reader, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The political maneuvering kept me engaged, and the romance was captivating. But I didn't know that it is part of a series 😅

happy Edna Fisher release day to all who celebrate!!
You're never too old for adventure.
When you’re a geriatric armed with nothing but gumption and knitting needles, stopping a sorcerer from wiping out an entire dragon-fighting organization is a tall order. No one understands why 83-year-old Edna Fisher is the Chosen One, destined to save the Knights from a dragon-riding sorcerer bent on their destruction. After all, Edna has never handled a magical weapon, faced down a dragon, or cast a spell. And everyone knows the Council of Wizards always chooses a teenager—like the vengeful girl ready to snatch Edna’s destiny from under her nose.
Still, Edna leaps at the chance to leave the nursing home. With her son long dead in the Knights’ service, she’s determined to save dragon-fighters like him and to ensure other mothers don’t suffer the same loss she did. But as Edna learns about the abuse in the ranks and the sorcerer’s history as a Knight, she questions if it’s really the sorcerer that needs stopping—or the Knights she’s trying to save.
“Beyond the utterly charming premise of this wonderful book, you will find dazzling wit, a cast of delightful characters, and a plot that will sweep you away. At heart, this is a love story, but one that shows the depth and complexity of love in all its permutations. But my very favourite thing about this book is how it makes me believe in a kinder, better world.” - SJ Whitby, author of the Cute Mutants series
buy The Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher now, rsvp to a book event, or preorder the audiobook!

Is this a three-review month? I think it is!
The Hexologists is a Lot Of Fun. It's a solid urban fantasy with a good mystery—a claimant to the throne, blackmail, a king who's suddenly trying to set himself on fire. It's a wonderful steampunk world with multiple forms of magic, including but not limited to artistic hexes, industrial alchemy, and a carpetbag full of magical artifacts. It's funny. The characters are great across the board, but the protagonists are especially good—morose and cynical Isolde, cheery and trusting Warren. There is a dragon, a sea monster, and creatures from hell dimensions. There are some good twists and turns and I didn't see the ending coming until it was almost on me (read: 1-2 pages early).
In short, it's got a little bit of everything that makes a story like this satisfying, and if you're looking for a smart-fun fantasy read this fall, you should definitely check it out. There are presumably going to be sequels and I'll be watching for them.
Out September 26, 2023.

The Circumference of the World by Lavie Tidhar
Source: NetGalley & the Publisher! Thank you so much!!TL;DR: I loved it – a set of interconnected stories of a book, a religion, and how fiction can affect reality. Plot: Each story within the book is like a nesting doll, starting with a woman seeking her missing husband and the book and (totally not a real religion) that pursues those who pursue the book.Characters: Each was flawed and…
